What a gem! An absolute must in the NEK. We are in town visiting family and had a large group dinner here; 12 adults and one toddler. They put us in our own room and the service was stellar. They never winced at the brazen and energetic two-year-old running through the dining room! The food is spectacular as well - so many choices and all so authentic! Our whole family was impressed at the selection and the overall quality. Side note: the French fries were the BEST anyone had ever had! Additionally, the inn rooms upstairs are something to behold. They are immaculate, expertly decorated and have charm to spare. I am so impressed and pleased to see an establishment like this in the NEK and even more chuffed to see it doing so well. It's worth the jaunt to Derby Line, we can't wait to head back. Bravo to the Derby Line Village Inn!

Stopped in for drinks at their bar with family. Bartenders were slow on the uptake: didn't know the pronunciations of their on tap German beer selections. That would be fine, except this place is supposed to be about Austrian cuisine. Then both of them were very rude to my mom, who had expressed her disappointment about not being able to get the kind of drink she wanted. When I'm visiting next, will likely choose a different place for drinks

The restaurant at Village Inn is in a lovely setting. The dining rooms are very pleasant with windows overlooking the gardens, the bar area is spacious and bright. We were, overall, quite pleased with our meal and we plan on going again. I highly recommend the roasted beet/goat cheese and gravlox starters. Very nice blend, the potato pancakes that came with the salmon were excellent. Also recommended: sauerbraten dish & sides, sachertorte, and apfel strudel (though I do like my apples a little more tender.) I was not happy with the pork shank and would not order it again. It should have been more tender and moist, as I've had in other places. The Austrian Red wine was very good and made an excellent pairing with the dishes. I will be trying the jaegerschnitzel next. Service is good and one does have a sense of feeling "welcomed" by the hostess.

The food is fabulous--discover European luxury at a bargain price. A terrific place to stop on a summer or fall motorcycle trip from or to Maine through northern N.England, as well as for intrepid skiers who want to join the Canadians at Jay Peak. The Austrian hosts Fritz and Paula are so friendly, the bar scene is filled with energy from locals as well as travelers, and all rooms are elegantly furnished, but lots of fun atmosphere and lots of action. It's worth a trip--next time, pass by Stowe and try the NE Kingdom of VT!

Outstanding. From the time we arrived we were greeted and treating like kings. Paula is a wonderful hostess and Fritz took the time during the dinner hour to come out and check to see how everyone was enjoying their meals. The food was hot, fresh and outstanding. The daily specials were unreal. Homemade everything to include dessert. First night I had the Wiener Schnitzel - I had never had it before and I absolutely devoured it. If you're staying as a guest, they check to see what time you will be having breakfast so that when you arrive, a delicious breakfast is being prepared. Coffee was great, homemade yogurt with fresh fruit and pastry to start, on to German sausages, roasted potatoes and the eggs how you want them. Beef Wellington with a sea scallop, creamed spinach - baked brie and toasts - chocolate mousse, strawberry shortcake with black cherries - tomato bisque - everything was to die for. Breakfast is included in your stay - you cannot go wrong! And all of the staff are friendly and the crowd inviting. Snowmobilers welcome - great place to stop for lunch as they have a wonderful bar. Sometimes live music and Fritz may even play the accordion if you're lucky enough! I cannot recommend this place enough - we will be back!

Where to begin. I crossed over the border from Montreal in the late evening. While I was at the border taking care of entrance formalities I spoke to an incredibly nice Border Patrol Agent. I asked him where I should eat in Derby Line? He quickly told me that the Derby Line Village Inn serves incredible German and Austrian food . It was less than five minutes from the border. Okay folks this is the best kept secret in Vermont. I was immediately met by co-owner Paula. She warmly greeted me and I was shocked to find out she had two Jazz musicians serenading the guests. The food is incredible, authentic , and The chef Fritz ( co-owner) is the real McCoy. His food is exquisite. Frtiz and Paula make each guest feel like they are family. The breakfast was just as incredible . There is nothing that Fritz can't make. His pastries are made to order and unsurpassed.

We had dinner here on Wednesday this week - our second time. We definitely needed reservations as the restaurant was very busy. It was pretty noisy for awhile, with the waitresses almost shouting to be heard. Once a majority of the food was served, the noise abated enough for us to talk in normal tones. I ordered the pork shank, which came on a sizzling cast iron skillet. The shank was huge, well prepared and the mashed potatoes, saurkraut and red cabbage accompanied it well. It was not as moist as I would like, but tasted great. My husband had a sausage appetizer, which arrived with a very young sauerkraut that complimented the sausage well, and the venison done two ways, this time as a stew and with a quail (stuffed with foie gras is what we understood), The stew was excellent, well seasoned and the meat very tender. The quail was good, but we did not detect any foi gras in the filling. We had a blackberry and cheese strudel for dessert which was the perfect ending to the meal - light and tasty. We were told that the strudel was made by an apprentice from the local high school - we are impressed with her skills!

I stayed here for a wedding this past weekend. It was so quiet, and I felt like a personal quest of the innkeeper. She was available and helped us with everything from printing wedding day speeches to rearranging furniture to accommodate bridesmaids for getting hair done. If you are attending a wedding in this area, stay here!!
