This place is a total hole-in-the-wall sandwich joint that I could not recommend more. We stopped here for a quick lunch in between brewery tours and my husband and I each got a sandwich. Not only were our sandwiches both DELICIOUS but this place truly does use homemade ingredients (I had a chipotle mayo and he had a horseradish mayo that were both freshly made in house!) and the service is friendly and welcoming. I'd stop back here any day to try another really yummy sandwich!

Ok how did I not know about this place for fish and onion rings. Their sandwiches are great too. It's a small place that I have driven past numerous times but a friend highly recommended it and we ordered take out. The fish was cooked so nicely and crispy. The onion rings were perfect. Can't wait until our next visit!

Found Union Jack through Yelp. Nice restaurant with friendly staff. Fish and chips very good. Pastrami was very nice. Onion rings were yummy! Will be back!

Don't underestimate this little spot. It was delish! Had haddock, hand cut fries & was just great. Ate at Shanty on Shore recently & what a disappointment. You won't be disappointed here. My husband had fish fillet & the bread (many choices) was soft, fresh, flavorful. The two guys working the grind were awesome, friendly. Can hardly wait to try the wraps/subs/panini. Prices were very good. Everything is made to order so nice and hot, fresh, worth any wait!

Stumbled on this place while staying at a nearby hotel. Had the meatloaf sub. Very flavorful and the staff were super friendly. If I'm in the area again I'd definitely go back.

Union Jacks is an unassuming little shopping center where people whip to-and-fro from the Post Office (seriously, y'all need to slow it down) and everything's painted that blandish beige color from the late 80's and early 90's. Wait (you might be saying) isn't this supposed to be a good review? Well, yes it is but I'm laying down the weird/sh*tty parking lot stuff and drab exterior first so you can get past that and see what a little gem this place is. The interior is spartan - just a few drink cases, some tables and chairs, a fountain drink machine and the counter where folks work. Chalkboards hang overhead with descriptions of the items divided into sections. Little baskets sit with examples of bread and tortilla types. It's operating room bright but it illustrates how clean the place is, for sure. This isn't a fancy place but it's all about the food anyway. Get it to go and eat it at home or the hotel. I bought a 6" veggie on Sriracha Garlic bread and a 6" fish on wheat. I also snagged a large Orangina. My fish was fried right in front of me and was hot and plentiful on the homemade bread. Dressed it with tartar, some lettuce and some black olives. I was torn between wolfing it down and savoring every bite. It turned out I did a little of both. That wheat bread is the real deal and has some tartness to it. Yum! The partner got the veggie and it came with standard veggie fare - lettuce, tomato, cukes, olives, onions and about 3 different types of peppers. They were generous with that and the cheese (of which there is a selection of 5-6 choices). You can pick from chips or fries and a fountain drink to make it a meal. Chips are tiny bags with a fair-to-middling variety. You can also turn sandwiches or wraps into salads which I totally didn't do. BRING ME ALL THE BREAD! Service was really friendly and they were patient with my confusion since I was a first timer. So, why 4 and not 5 stars? I spent $16 on 2 sandwiches and a drink, and while I appreciate the homemade bread and such, I don't think the prices match the product in some cases. $7 for a smallish 6" (really 5"...where did that huge bread in the pictures come from because that is NOT what I had) veggie not using good vegetable ingredients? Ehhhhh, it's steep. Especially with a $3-$4 combo add on (which I didn't get). For around $11 I think you can get better elsewhere in that case. But I'll be back for another fish sandwich or one of the more substantial subs STAT!

Awesome! The fish and chips took me back to my time in England. Sandwich was phenomenal (12" Philly Roast Beef) - as big as my forearm and full of tasty goodness. These folks know what they are doing - great food, decent price, and the staff easily accommodated gluten free needs. Don't let the exterior of the building intimidate you - it's a hole in the wall. The kitchen floor could also use a cleaning. However, I'm impressed and will come back!

Found this place because of yelp. Delicious meal all around - I had turkey sub with delicious honey oat bread. Hubby had fish n chips. Liked the option to go healthy or not :)

This is a great little casual joint for grabbing a nice sandwich or wrap. The bread is so fresh and soft that it makes some other sandwich shops' bread seem stale in comparison. We had the Reuben, Turkey Lurkey, onion rings and deep fried pickles. All were well prepared and flavors were pronounced and clean. For families, this is a great placed because the kids meals are big and varied. Staff is very friendly. Seating is pretty limited but wasn't a problem when we went.

My wife and I stopped in on the way to somewhere else -- looked at Yelp to see what was good and close and, yet again, Yelp delivers a great place! I had the beef & onion melt, which was an amazing sandwich. Bread was incredibly fresh, beef was perfectly done and the beer battered onion rings were perfect. Also ordered a side of the onion rings -- seriously the best onion rings I've ever had, absolutely delicious. My wife had the fish & chips, which she proclaimed as spectacular. I didn't get a taste of the fish, but did the chips and they were way above average. Not sure what other reviewers noticed about the cleanliness, but having read others' reviews I did look. The entire place was spotlessly clean. Even the floor shined in spite of the rain/snow/ice mess outside. Lots of interesting menu items, we'll definitely return soon. A little out of the way from downtown Burlington, but worth the extra few minutes.

The staff was friendly as usual. Fish and chips is still great. Onion rings were fried too long. Union Jacks still could use a cleaning. Will be back. Want to try more of their sandwiches but the fish and chips is too good

I've lived down the road for quite some time and have just recently tried them out. I really liked my meal, we split two sandwiches. The staff was nice and the prices were agreeable. I'll certainly return soon.

The guys who work here are super friendly and fun. The menu is big and filled with yummy options. I didn't end up getting anything, (I was craving pizza) but my mom got fish and chips and it was AMAZING. I ate about half of her food with my hands in the parking lot. Very clean restaurant, solid menu, great food, and good service. All in all, great experience.

Inexpensive but great sandwiches. A bit better because of some added spices and menu selections. The fish and chips was better than most. The owners are fun to talk to and very accommodating. Small place And the GPS gets you close, but not exactly there- not sure why. Worth a try if you are in the area.

Love love love this sandwich shop. Each sandwich I have picked up from Union Jacks has always been so fresh and consistent. Their bread is fantastic. What a hidden gem. Also, their cookies are AMAZING.

A good old fashioned sandwich shop with unique sandwiches and British flare. Price is right, too!

Randomly walked in here wanting to go to the vietnamese place next door, had no expectations and was wowed by the sandwich I got. Best hot pastrami I've had in years and it had fried pickles on it. Super chill and friendly dudes behind the counter and good prices. Fries could have been a little crispier but the overall experience was that we'd found a gem of a sandwich shop which are tough to find in Burlington. Gotta go back for the fish and chips.

Tasty subs, panini and fish n chips... It could stand a tidying up, but everything was hot and tasty. The service was excellent and fast as was the cooking. The people were very nice too. If you are looking for an on the go restaurant or if you are in the mood for British food stop on by! Tasty culinary adventures, y'all !!!

WOW!!! Union Jacks is amazing!! If you are driving through Burlington, this is a must. Customer service is amazing!! SUPER friendly people with very personalized interaction. The food: out of this world. So much meet in the sandwiches, cooked to perfection. Stop by Union Jacks if you want good eats for not too much! You won't regret it.

This sandwich shop is the best in town!! First off, the owners are so friendly it's a pleasure to eat at Union Jack's. They always have a smile on their faces and are wonderful to interact with. The food......it's phenomenal!!!! All their food is made in-house. They bake their own bread, slice their own deli meat in front of you, they even hand chop their own romaine lettuce!! Believe me, it makes a difference!!! The only problem is, their food is so good, it's hard to choose what to get!!! I work on Shelburne road and try to eat here once a week. Chicken Cheddar Bacon melt is to DIE FOR. Just with no onions... ; ) EVERYONE SHOULD EAT HERE!!!! AMAZING PLACE!!!

  • Patrick E.

The friendly staff make you feel truly welcome. That said, they forgot to add hot sauce to my wife's buffalo chicken sandwich. We pointed it out, and no problem, they opened it up and slathered some on (not quite what we expected). I ordered the beef and onion melt. Delicious! The onions in this masterpiece are actually onion rings! I really should have ordered a small. I always order a large, but with this sandwich, it was too much. I really enjoyed the jalepeno cheddar bread. My wife pointed out that the place was dirty. I didn't notice until she pointed it out. But she was right. The floors clearly had not been cleaned in some time. I did notice that the meat slicer had collected some scraps. Overall... Four stars. Lost the fifth for the error on the sand witch, and the overall cleanliness of the place We'll be back again!

The shop is located across from the Subaru dealership on Shelburne Rd. It's in the same plaza as the Champlain Station USPS. Unlike most of the sandwich shops in Burlington, this place offers a wide selection of "unhealthy" but good sandwiches with a very reasonable price point. Most of the sandwich joints in downtown charge you $8+ for uber-tiny subs/sandwiches. This place offers large sandwiches for $6-7. One thing I like about this place is that everything is cooked to order. They make the sandwiches in front of you. When you take a peek inside the kitchen, it is absolutely sparking clean. Also, the staff here are super friendly. Although this place doesn't advertise organic / new-age style and gives off somewhat of a more commercial vibe, it is still a mom-and-pop place that is clean and offers consistently good sandwiches at a reasonable price point. I had a cheese steak with onion rings (forgot what's it called) and a rueben before and they were both excellent. Highly recommended for those who hate the vegan / new-age / organic BS that plagues Burlington.

Great fish and chips. The fish had a nice crispy breading and the inside was well cooked. The fries were good as well. The tartar sauce is made in house and is great as well. Before I left, I ordered their beer battered onion rings and had extra tartar sauce just to use for the onion rings. Great experience.

I love everything about Union Jack's. The employees are super friendly and upbeat every time I'm in there. The "cor blimey" with fried pickles and chipotle sauce (a staff recommendation when I didn't know what I wanted) may be the best sandwich I've ever eaten. As far as I'm concerned, the best sandwich shop in burlington if you factor in the friendly service, delicious food, reasonable pricing and ease of parking.

Great sandwiches. Even better people working there, so nice. The Philly steak style beef was great, peppercorn sauce made it. The cheeky bugger is highly recommended, best sandwich in ages. Great prices.

I stopped in for lunch after reading favorable reviews here on Yelp. I love a good sandwich so I went in with high expectations. I'm pleased to report I got just what I was hoping for. An above average sandwich at a fair price. I opted for the Chicken Bacon Ranch with all the veggies and what not. I was served a very tasty sandwich that probably could have served as two meals had I not been starving due to lack of breakfast. Inside the restaurant has the feel of the fast food place, but the good news is the food tastes nothing like the flavorless chain sandwich offerings. It was also nice to be attended to by a staff that was not seemingly in a coma. Would certainly go again.

I've spent a lot of time in the UK and as a result I am very very picky about my fish and chips. Most American restaurants don't know the first thing about creating a proper seasoned breading for the fish, or the best quality of fish to use, but Union Jacks breaks the mold! I keep coming back here because of their 'Ahoy Matey' wrap. The fish is huge and fantastic, their tartar sauce is the right amounts of creamy, tart and pickled, and you can add as many additional toppings as you like without charge. My partner typically gets the fish sandwich, which is an even larger portion of fish (like huge!) on a large sub roll and equally tasty, all for just a dollar more. Their other sandwiches are good, but I am unable to bring myself to order anything but the Ahoy Matey every time I go. My only regret? It's on the other side of town from me!

So yummy! Everything on the menu looked great, and they have the friendliest staff! They even Cut the meat themselves right when you order your sandwich. Union jacks does it right! subway take notes ,this is how long and tasty a foot long should be.

I have worked in the sandwich industry before and have never had a sandwich like I did at Union Jacks. It was absolutely fantastic. My boyfriend can't stop raving at their Reuben and I'm crazy about their chicken cheddar bacon. They have different breads and will make you anything you want. They were extremely friendly and the place was very neat and clean. I can't wait to come back next time I am in Vermont and try more of their amazing sandwiches.

I tend to frequent this location weekly if not bi-weekly. The owners present a straight forward feel, no over-dressing, no facade of authenticity to cover up a lack thereof many places around here are occasionally guilty of. This is as close to the real thing outside of England one can come to, yet they don't push it. The owners are passionate about the culture which they purvey, they certainly aren't faking it to fill a niche. Apparently, (as the menu indicates,) Union Jacks functions as a deli, as well as a fish & chips spot. I am afraid to say I have not had anything other than the fish in the last 3 years, as it is miles ahead of the local competition. Every single time the batter has ben crispy, the fish moist and flakey, and all without dumping grease all over the basket paper (newspaper, in contrast to the red and white checker patter, the way it should be.) They also serve the fish in a sandwich, on their own baked bread. Not once has this become a greasy mess. I have never left with leftovers. I hope this place the best, so that I may continue frequenting it.

Easily the best sandwich place I've been to - hands down. Wife and I were visiting Burlington and decided to check yelp for a lunch place. I came across this gem and decided to check it out. They make everything from scratch there. They slice the meat and cheese right in front of you as you place your order; veggies are cut fresh in back; and fries and onion rings are cut/made as you place your order so no 20 minute old fries (always fresh). And of course the sandwiches are amazing. Lastly, the customer service is great. Friendly staff always with smiles on. I'll definitely be back here when I'm back. If you haven't yet or are in the area, check it out!

We didn't end up going here when we visited during the summer, and I was sad I didn't go. We got to opportunity to visit Burlington again, and so Union Jacks was one of the first places we went to eat. We both got fish and chips, and they were great. Hands down, best fish and chips I've ever had. The recipe is a real authentic British recipe. Can't say much about the sandwiches, as I didn't have one, but I've heard great things. Would recommend to all of my friends.

Great sandwiches and staff! Always a pleasure to come here for quick take-out (or you can eat there). I love the hot roast beef (Philly style) sandwich and, of course, the fish sandwich. All the meat is freshly sliced in front of you. They have a sandwich punchcard for a free six inch. Awesome. And if you catch a day that they have fresh onion rings: jackpot.

This place is so underrated! They cut the meat and cheese slices as they're making the sandwich for you. It's great ingredients, and the Honey Oat bread is amazing. Great food for great prices, and you get to speak to a British person.

Very friendly staff! Owned and operated by a Britt with a real accent, pretty cool! I had traditional fish and chips with a soda to go. Total bill $11, very reasonable. They have a sub and wrap menu too if your not into fish and chips. I will return and I do recommend this little corner restaurant. Eat in or to go.

This is a great local business that servers some really awesome food. I was a little worried when it first opened mainly because of the location and the fact that Burlington doesn't do English fare well. However, this place is perfect! Great food, great menu and superior customer service. The owners are usually there working and talking to customers and they really enjoy what they do.
