A slice of tropical vacation in Burlington. Great juice and breakfast food!

Sunday evening at The Spot an old gas station is usually quiet. The spot is one of many restaurants near us, so it is rather convenient for a quick bite. Lucky for us it also has really good food. We always chuckle when we go there because we used to stop there once in awhile to get gas. It was deemed to be a historic site so it had to be preserved! Why anyone thought it would make a good site for a restaurant is beyond me. So it is a unique structure, with odd angles in the actual dinning area. It has a surfer motif, a sail on the ceiling and a nice salt water tank with a few fish and live coral in it. My husband had Mahi, with avocado slices and slaw in a delicious soft taco, I also had fish taco with a peach and tomato salsa. These dishes were served with a handful of tortia chips and spicy hot salsa. The Citizen's cider served in chilled cans really goes well with the spicy dishes. Even though we were full, I had spied a sundae at one of the tables, and thought we should try it. Visually perfect, a bowl filled with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and surrounded by fingers of brownies, a drizzle of chocolate and sliced strawberries. The brownies were a little on the dry side, however it probably worked well with the other ingredients.

I really want to give this place five stars because the food is totally delicious. I usually get the streak n cheese, which is to die for, but the eggs benedict is also highly recommended. The atmosphere is cool, as it's a converted gas station with the big garage doors that open up in the summer. It has an ocean theme complete with a big fish tank and it's kid-friendly. But the service leaves much to be desired, which is why I had to knock off two stars. There are a couple waitresses who are great, but the rest are just cold and rude. I'm from Boston so I'm used to rude, but even this place stands out as intimidating. If the food wasn't as good as it is, I'd never come back.

This is my favorite breakfast spot, no pun intended, in the Burlington area. I came here much more frequently when I lived in the area, but now, every time I come back to visit, I have to stop in for breakfast. My favorites are the da hui and the ole with corn tortillas. They also have gluten free toast, which is quite nice if you have a food allergy. They brew Kona coffee and it's some of the best you can get at a breakfast place, coffee houses aside. The service is always friendly and the prices are reasonable. The outdoor seating is a nice touch too. Super tasty, 100 percent.

Just God awful service and the food comes out cold. I asked for something to be fixed and they gave me attitude. We took my boyfriends mother there, and she's from out of town...just embarrasing

So disappointed. We never got served so I can't even comment on the food. My boyfriend and I were seated after a 15 minute wait which was fine but then we proceeded to wait for 20 minutes never being served. We left. Not interested in going back.

Three stars seemed too low, but I 'm really not effusive here. The omelettes and most of the other food is great. I've been at least a half dozen times now. The price is certainly right, but the seating can be pretty darn tight and the wait can be pretty long. Meanwhile, the service and coffee are middle of the road, which can make waiting uncomfortable. The hot sauce was curdled, but it's fun to watch the fish!

What a pleasant spot! It reminds me of where I live in SoCal. I wondered about the potted Palm Trees out front; could they possibly be alive through a VT winter or are they fake? We went there for lunch as an alternative to South End Kitchen with no seating available. They had a great Steak and Arugala sandwich special I asked about on the way in, to learn not available rarer than past medium. My partner went for it anyway after I ordered the BLT with "soft bacon", and Jake said his would be prepared medium rare, so I changed my order to the special. He soon returned to report medium rare 'not available' so I switched back to the Mahalo. We both enjoyed our sandwiches with chips and a pickle spear. Food was good, but pricey compared to back home in San Diego where a choice of french fries or a side salad would be included at that price. Our server must be a chain smoker as he reeked of smoke on each visit to our table. Unfortunately they were not busy so he had plenty of smoke breaks during our visit which was unpleasant.

Stumbled upon the Spot on a long weekend vacation in Burlington. We stayed close to downtown but took the ride out this way to enjoy this unique little dining spot. The food was very good and we enjoyed the friendly staff. I recommend The Spot. It's kitschy in a good way. Aloha!

The exterior is pretty cool in a retro-California way, but every moment spent on the interior left more than something to be desired. Two out of four meals were prepared incorrectly. The omelettes were skimpy, both in eggs and in filling, and the chicken sandwich probably doesn't deserve the name--there was so little meat I had to remake the sandwich into a half just to have something between the slices of bread. The smoothies were fine, but nothing to write home about (though a member of our party made his dairy allergy known to the server who nevertheless brought his smoothie made with yogurt). A sandwich ordered without tomatoes came with tomatoes and an omelette ordered with guacamole came without guacamole. You get the picture. The menu looked awesome, the food was a letdown. Also: it was freezing cold inside and the acoustics were terrible.

I live right across the street and usually walk over to get some drinks for brunch and maybe a breakfast wrap . the drinks arent the greatest and they have this thing about straws. They dont give you straws for any drinks and the servers seem pissed when you ask sometimes. I dont know if they are trying to save money or what but come on, they arent that expensive. if im drinking a bloody mary that is mostly ice anyways I'm gonna want a straw. The food is really good here though. Pretty good sized portions. Lots of vegetarian options.Very good homemade veggie sausage. if anyone that works here is reading this, do your restaurant a favor and GIVE PEOPLE STRAWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took the kids here one evening. It was convenient to my travel route and was a change of pace from the places we normally hit. I'd been here before, but it was for lunch. The salmon was super yummy, and both my kids practically licked their plates clean. It's a little pricier than what I normally go for, but the food was excellent.

I'd like to start off by saying that the food we all got was delicious. I went with three other friends for dinner around 8 and we had been excited to try out their dinner foods. I'm all for supporting small, local businesses but I value what I spend my money on. I got The Machado and it was definitely worth its price but the service was terrible. We went inside as it said to be seated and the hostess told us to sit anywhere, so we went and sat outside. It took them about ten minutes to come clean our table and give us menus, not to mention that they personally seated another couple before us and gave them menus before even looking at us. Once our waiter did notice us, she was confused. She was not super friendly, but not rude either. She only filled our water glasses at the beginning and when my friend asked for a refill, she only filled her glass when all three other glasses were empty. I was just extremely unimpressed with the service, the place could have been so much nicer if the employees weren't incompetent.

I ate dinner here earlier this evening and ordered from the VT Restaurant Week menu. They had a special menu printed for the event. The atmosphere is creative, nice, and relaxing. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Everything about the experience was excellent! I had the pot stickers for the appetizer, Baja Longboard Jam for dinner, and the Fried Cake with Moose Tracks ice cream for dessert. The pot stickers had a pork filling and were quite tasty. They were crispy on the outside and came with a flavorful dipping sauce. The Baja Longboard Jam was delicious--pork enchiladas on a bed of rice, beans, diced tomatoes and onions, with guacamole and sour cream on top. The fried cake and ice cream was a perfect finish. Other times I've eaten here I've had and recommend: The Peahi (fish tacos), The Hamilton (steak and cheese), and The Maverick (burger).

Ive been to the Spot about four times now. This is one of the restaurants I want to love, but every time, I'm slightly disappointed. A lot of things are wonderful, good service, unique menu, unique ambiance, bike rack etc. My last two dinners were great and disappointing. The salad was fresh and amazing but the chicken was very dry, over cooked, bland and under portioned. Prices are a tad high for the hit and miss consistency. I will be back, but i hope the owners tighten up the consistency of the food. Also i fought off flies for the entire hour dinner, couldn't wait to leave.

I used to not really like this place. I had gone only for brunch and was never very impressed. I'd even had a few really bad brunch sandwiches there. Then I made a discovery. The Spot has some very good food, but you have to know what to order. Breakfast food is not really their specialty. Unless it contains carne asado (braised, stringy beef) in which case your breakfast will be great :) Other things they do well... a great burger. Great rice and beans. Good steak dish. Good carne asado tacos. A great special chicken sandwich with bacon. The salads are ok. Any breakfast egg dishes are pretty rubbery. So, if you're going to go to the Spot, pick the right things. Avoid the eggs and other breakfast food (mostly). Stick to dinner-type foods.

Really not very good, could not stop focusing on the dirty air vent, flys all over the place, drink ok, way overpised for sure, probably won't go back, they were out of fish tacos which was the reasons we went there

I will give props to the Spot because I think they've gotten a lot better, it has a poser vibe but our last time here was great, awesome food and the waitress with the bandana was super!!

I'm a fan- great atmosphere and food. Service can be slow but I never really seem to mind. This is the sort of place you want to hang out at for a little while. For breakfast, make your own omelette or get the Bansai Pipeline. Any omelette can be made into a wrap as well. For dinner, grab a cocktail and try the burger. Add any of the fixings from the omelette menu and add anything!

At best it's a confused diner. The food is mediocre. The service is ok. I expected something more.

I went for the first time a couple weeks ago and loved it! I had a chicken quesadilla and a mimosa and they were delicious. The surf atmosphere is really cool and it really makes you feel like you're eating near a beach rather than on Shelburne Rd.

  • Josh N.

This place had the most disgusting food I have ever had. I ordered a egg and sausage sandwich. What I received was a burnt lump of meat with a fried egg on a crappy English muffin. Really, it was probably the worst dining experience I have ever had. All I could taste was burnt sausage. Yuck!

I work in the south end of Burlington, and was excited to try a new lunch choice. I have to say that this was a total disappointment. The space was a renovated gas station, but they pulled it off well. But that is the biggest compliment that I can give them. Between stale bread and absolutely horrible service, it is safe to say that I will never return.

Fine neighborhood restaurant. A friend and I meet here every Tuesday for a two hour (mostly) gab fest. It's not just that it's convenient. The breakfast food is good (which is the only time I've ever been). The breakfast taco is the best breakfast deal in town, IMNSHO. The coffee is good. The staff are outstanding. I do have another friend who has eaten lunch there a few times and he loves the talapia. For me, it's the staff that pump it up from a 3 and a half to a 5. It's laid back, friendly, bantering. Probably why I don't frequent it during high volume customer time. Seriously, there are times when their large parking lot is filled completely and spills over onto our street. Mostly weekend morning and lunch. Having a place where you can hang out with a friend over coffee and a slow breakfast without being hipstered out is a real blessing.

Liked the food, like the vibe, and the customer facing staff are friendly and pleasant. The wings are delicious (with the maple syrup and garlic glaze), the beet and goat cheese salad with the candied walnuts was on par with upscale restaurants.

Good food, good service. Odd combination of a Hawaii themed diner in northern Vermont, but the blue cheese omelet was great.

Coming from out of town, the freezing cold morning air of Vermont was a rude awakening on New Years morning. But, as I walked into The Spot I warmed up with the good atmosphere and Hawaiian theme that was like something out of this world. I ordered the Rincon and my girlfriend had the Da Hui, both were delicious. The home fries were amazing as well. And if you like spicy, they have a house made pineapple habanero hot sauce that is to die for. All in all, this was a great spot to eat and I am so glad to have stumbled upon it suing my travels.

Happened upon this place on our way out of town. So glad we did. GREAT sandwiches and local beer selection. Comfortable little place to grab a bite with good service. Prices were very reasonable, too. Check it out if you're in town.

Amazing food every time! Service is good but sometimes you might have to wait for a seat for 15-30 mins. I get breakfast most all the time and love the food :) you should come here!!

Breakfast, lunch and dinner, we've had them all. Huevos Rancheros, OMG, deeeelish. Carrot cake - impossible to resist once you've tried it. The staff is incredibly personable. The food is creative, flavorful and reliably good. Reasonably priced and definitely worth a visit.

I ate breakfast at 'Da Spot this morning and I thought it was very good and unique. How can you not like a Surf-themed local restaurant in Vermont, which occupies the premises of a former gas station? The interior is somewhat stark, but very clean and decorated with surf boards, pictures and other surf/Hawaiian themed items. It's very bright, too, due to the oversized glass windows which comprise most of the street-facing wall. The service was friendly and prompt. The coffee is excellent, and at $1.95 a cup, including refills, is a relative bargain in today's landscape. My breakfast of 2 eggs and one pancake was cooked to order and served nice and hot. I had wanted the veggie sausage, but was informed that they had run out over the weekend and had not yet made their new batch (it was early Monday morning). My server graciously offered a bowl of fruit as a substitute. The fruit was fresh, too, not some canned peaches or pre-packaged fruit cocktail. It consisted of sliced strawberries, real, fresh peaches, orange slices and pineapple chunks. - That reminds me, they also make their own hot sauce; Pineapple-Habenero. It was very tasty! A sign on their door indicates that they now serve dinner. Apparently they show surf films one night weekly.

Can't say much about the other fare, as I've only been here for breakfast. Great huevos, bottomless coffee, and they absolutely nailed a few omelettes to the point that I'd go back specifically to get them again, which is saying a lot for an omelette. Service is not horrible, as other have stated. Better described as casual the way independent coffee shops usually are. Sort of charmingly spacey. Prices are diner-level, food's way better than that. Worth the visit.

I was invited to a lunch meeting here today - and I accepted, but was not really excited to go. You see, I went and tried The Spot out 5 times when they opened - giving them time to work out the kinks of a new business. I just was not thrilled and figured that I could go to other places to spend my money. I was REALLY surprised today. Both the food and service were great. I had the special breakfast taco which was plentiful and delicious. The bacon in the taco was crisp and the veggies were fresh. The fruit cup it came with was delicious - and included blood oranges, which was a nice touch. I will go back and try the Spot again.

New this year to the south side of Burlington - they converted an old gas station into this great surfer food spot. Cool. Menu has the standards for all 3 meals but with a the added Hawaiian angle. Its a pretty cool place to eat and hangout (free wifi). I've tried most of the menu and haven't found anything I haven't really liked. Though I'm not a huge salad guy- I actually dig these. Love the BLT (mahalo) - got to respect a place that serves such solid (thick) bacon! New chef has brought in burgers and grilled stuff - place continues to get better. Service is friendly and take pride in their job - that is so often lost these days. The neighborhood is psyched.

It's growing on me. I must say when The Spot first opened I really did not think it was that impressive at all. Now they chef has changed, many of the corks got worked out. Huevos Rancheros for breakfast are delicious! Dinner itesm are good and Wed night cheap wings are awesome :)

M-E-H. This place has so much potential. I love that it's in a reappropriated gas station, and the location is good, too. Plenty of parking, and close enough to downtown that you could easily walk or bike. But the food....edible, but boring. Why are restauranteurs in Burlington so afraid to take risks? The place claims to be a Hawaiian restaurant, so why is half of the menu just plain ol' 'merican food? And I realize that Hawaii is part of the United States, but it has a cultural background that is completely different from everywhere else in America. Why not explore that more? From what I understand, this place is very new. Maybe they're just finding their footing. If their Yelp average improves, and I hear good word of mouth from reliable sources, I'll try it again.

Pleasantly surprised by the creative menu and well-prepared food. Shied away because of how it looks on the outside, but have had two very satisfying meals--breakfast & dinner--there in the past week. Nice to have a reasonably priced, non-chain place in the neighborhood.

I live right near the Spot, and as much as I would love to love it, I can't. The food is disappointing. Even simple things like eggs and pasta come out cold, greasy, or not the way I ordered them. Food dribbles out of the kitchen in no particular order. Wait staff is friendly but clueless. Drinks don't come. Refills never happen. Side dishes go missing. It's too bad, but I can't recommend it.

This place was ok. Very young staff, that was delightful. Food was not my style but was fine. I liked the vibe of the place, it is an old gas station that is made up as an surf joint.

We stumbled upon The Spot while vacationing in Burlington and are glad we gave it a try. The interior had just enough of the funky surfer vibe to make it fun. The food was absolutely delicious and was better tasting than some meals we've had at twice the price. The plantains were by far the best I've ever tasted and the homemade hot sauce was delicious on our empanada. We'll definitely revisit The Spot if we're ever in Burlington again.

My wife and I are up in Burlington for a wedding and took a chance on The Spot this morning. The sunny day didn't hurt but anyways we found the huge windows, surfer gear, and big palm / draecaena plants to be a great atmosphere. The coffee was fabulous. We had omelettes - one was the daily special with goat cheese, tomato, spinach, and basil. One was bacon, spinach, and blue cheese. Both were fabulous with plenty of cheese and thick bacon. I ordered sides of guacamole and salsa and both were clearly home made and excellent if needing a little salt (I appreciate that they might want to leave the sodium low and let people add it as they like). Our waitress was super helpful even though the place was jammin and had our waters filled constantly... maybe they've been reading their past yelp reviews and shaped up :-) Home fries were mixed regular and sweet potato which was nice. Basically the visit made our morning.

  • Casey H.

I never write reviews, but I feel compelled to write one for The Spot. Sadly, its not a positive one. I've been there twice. The first time I had an omelet with sweet potato hash, which came out cold. The second time, the waitstaff was incredibly rude and the eggs that I had ordered over easy came out scrambled, after a way too long wait. I've also had friends end up with egg shells in their eggs. The only thing I've gotten that they didn't mess up was a tea. I really hate to be so harsh because this place has such potential. Cute decor in a nicely renovated area! But with the multiple terrible experiences I've had, I just can't rate it any better. I don't think I'll be going back.

  • Angela S.

The decor at The Spot is bright and inviting, but the service is far from it. No one greeted us, the staff was unsmiling and unfriendly, we were not thanked for visiting. The menu was limited, and food choices were unimpressive. I had a grilled veggie sandwich (the veggies were tasty) with one side of the bread burned and the cheese unmelted. It was so soggy that it just fell apart halfway through eating it. My dining partner had a veggie wrap with hummus that tasted like something I've made at home. Overall, this was a big disappointment. They could have something great but have a lot of work to do to get there.

Extremely rude hostess, no straws, but the food was pretty good.

I finally got to eat at The Spot! I had been wanting to go ever since they converted it from the old gas station. It's an adorable space, led me to think the food would be of better quality. The Hawaiian theme is a little kitchy/tacky. The food was decent, a friend of mine got Huevos Rancheros and it looked like they might be making their own salsa in there, which I like. Another friend, after ordering a ham, egg & cheese breakfast sandwich, asked our waitress, "So is the ham deli-sliced, or--" and the waitress cut her off and said "No, it's like, real ham. It's like, legit," which obviously was not helpful at all. When we all drained our water glasses within 10 minutes of arrival, the waitress waited for us to ask her for more half way through the meal, and then said "I don't think I have enough." Enough...water? Are you kidding? One thing, I'm not saying waitstaff MUST exude confidence and panache in order to be likable/successful, but I'm saying that the best DO, so if you want to be awesome, don't act like your clients are bothering you when they ask you for shit. It's your job.

I've lived in the Burlington Area for 22 years and this is by far my favorite restaurant. Their menu is unique and exciting. The atmosphere is so fun I love the Hawaiian/surf theme it's very original. So fun to sit outside on a nice day there. i love the ground swell sandwich and the fish tacos are a must try!

Great place! We were passing through Burlington on our way to Shelburne Farm and found this restaurant. The food was great and the service was friendly. I had a great BLT on yummy bread with a side salad and my husband a chicken sandwich that was excellent as well. They have a great kids menu. We added a side of fruit to my daughter's lunch - it was lovely - lots of nice fresh fruit. If I'm ever back in Burlington, I'll definitely visit again.

We had high hopes for The Spot based on its quirky location and charming decor and were rooting for them to succeed. The friendly service left little to be desired, but the food was immensely disappointing. We ordered two omelets that came with sweet potato home fries and toast. The omelet was a flat pancake of egg that was folded over on the slightly raw filling inside. The fillings-- sausage, cheese, and various vegetables-- were clumped together on one side or the other of the concoction, and we had to open the whole thing up to mix it all together. However, the bigger disappointments were the home fries and toast. The home fries were soggy, half cooked slices of sweet potato that were not crispy in the least. Even the toast was really just slightly dried pieces of bread that weren't even warm. Compared to other local establishments, The Spot will need to raise the quality of its food a great deal in order to survive.
