Let's be real here -- you're coming here for the view and the view alone. Splash is a Burlington summer time must (if not a regular stop), but you're coming here for the views, the sunset photos, and the gentle rocking of the piers. The service, despite the sheer volume of staff, definitely leaves something to be desired. I was shocked to hear the bartenders audibly complaining about a patron at the next table and was equally unimpressed with the service. The food and drink price point would seem to indicate higher quality, but the food/drinks are just ok. My recommendation here would be to eat elsewhere and buy a beverage and split an appetizer since (unfortunately) they will not seat you at their tables unless you are buying food. There is a small 'waiting area' on the piers, which consists of a couple of picnic tables and chairs, though it is often full and finding seating can be difficult. It also seemed like anyone could just come down and sit in this area (not just the parties waiting for their tables in the dining area of Splash). Three stars is reflective of the view and I would certainly say much less if I were rating on only the food and service.

Ok, I'm revising this review at Yelps request. Clearly I should refrain from any pointing and/or clicking in the heat of the moment. My most sincere apologies to anyone I may have offended, and to those of you who enjoyed my rant... you are my people. So take two - As a local I can vouch for the view; it's a really great place to drink a beer and watch the sun set. That said, actually getting the beer into your hands will prove to be frustrating. Prepare to be intentionally ignored or made to believe that your business is a nuisance. Even if I believed that somehow that I was undeserving of their attention, the genius brothers behind the bar made certain I would not return by displaying a revolting lack of hygiene and basic food-safety practices. Under no circumstances should you order food here; it's an interesting cross mix of Applebee's take out and airline food. Do yourself a favor and just order a bottled beer and sit on the dock.

Atmosphere; wonderful! You sit on a floating dock directly on the lake with a beautiful view of the water and the mountains. The pricing is very high. $9 for a hot dog, $19 for lobster roll, $10 for most mixed drinks. We sat directly at the bar and were entertained/served my a really nice guy who spent time talking with us and giving us advice about the Area. In this case, the service was very good! I would definitely recommend coming to this joint for a drink on the water but I wouldn't necessarily recommend this as your meal of choice.

The reviews were spot on. The drinks we're celebrating, as was the view. The food pretty standard.

Overview: Splash has great views, poor service, mediocre food, and high prices. Splash is pretentious but has no right to be based on the quality of the food. Based on my last experience, I will not be going to Splash again. My plan was to meet up with two friends at Splash for drinks and possibly dinner. I was the first to arrive and I told the hostess we would have three people. She asked if we were having dinner. I told the hostess that I was not sure because I did not have a chance to talk to the other two members of our party. The hostess said that that if we were not eating food, I could not sit down at one of the tables outside. I thought that seemed reasonable (other than the fact that there were about 15-18 open tables). I asked the hostess if it would be okay to sit down, and order a few appetizers and a drink to start before the other two members of our party arrived, and when they arrived I would know if they they wanted to eat dinner. If they did not want dinner then we would move to the bar area. The hostess said that "appetizers did not count as food" and that I was welcome to order a drink from the bar and stand inside. If the restaurant was busy, I could have understood them being so strict, but because there were so many open tables, I thought it was somewhat ridiculous that they insisted we each order a dinner entree, and that several appetizers (likely equaling the cost of one or two of us ordering an entree) did not count as food. If you want drinks with a good view of the water, I suggest Breakwaters instead.

Five stars for the view, plus a 1 star ding for the prices. You're right on the water. As larger boats go by, like the ferry, the barge this restaurant is built on sways slightly with the passing ripples. Credit cards ARE accepted, though the menu says they are "cash friendly," and that they do take checks. (It seems they prefer cash.) I had a grilled salmon sandwich. Cost: $14.95. Expensive sandwich. Taste was okay. It didn't rock me, but it did the job in filling me up and it was a quality piece of fish. Plenty of french fries were included. There is no other place here to eat on the water. So, you pay a premium for this view. Nearby, nice swing seat-benches can be found along the waterfront path. Parking nearby is $5 for the first hour, $2 for each additional hour, paid in advance. A free shuttle will take you to Church Street from here. A 2 hour cruise on Lake Champlain is $40, (if I recall correctly). On this day, a fairly lengthy line of people had assembled to particate in the next cruise.

While you can't beat the atmosphere, the service leaves much to be desired. We did not see our waitress once after our food arrived and had to flag her down for the check. And make sure you do not leave anything behind. I, unfortunately, left my brand-new polarized Ray Bans on the table at the end of the night. Despite calling within 30 minutes, I was told no one had seen them (even with the poor service, our table tipped 20%). Very disappointing.

You don't come to Splash for great service, you come for the view and the outdoor seating. I would recommend coming here for one drink since it's super pricey, I had the food years ago and it was certainly not memorable. The views of the High Peaks and Champlain are PHENOMENAL. I highly advise that you come at sunset.

I love the atmosphere and service of this restaurant. However, the food is not great. At times I couldn't finish eating a meal because it was way to bland. I will say their Caesar salad, drinks and burgers are pretty good surprisingly. It all depends what you order. Just keep your fingers crossed that you picked one of the decent dishes.

  • Jamie H.

You can't beat the location of this place, however I don't like that you can't have just drinks in the "main" seating area with the umbrellas. I get it during busier times, but in the middle of the afternoon - inbetween lunch and dinner - seems like it should be OK. Whatever - the pina colada I had was good - but pricey. Glad we were able to sit up on the top and enjoy our cocktails and watch the water.

We had five for a quick lunch and the view was great as it was a sunny day on Lake Champlain. We ordered 5 lobster rolls and were all very happy with the freshness and amount of lobster that was on each toasted roll. Some French fries while I had the onion rings and they were cold but still tasty. The coleslaw that came with it was very good as well. Our waitress was courteous and knowledgable and it was a pleasant lunch and the $17.95 Lobster Roll was a once in awhile treat.

While the food here is pretty good, the reason to come here is the location. Being right on the water can't be beat, and I believe there are only two places in Burlington where you can do this. Splash is the better of the two. When I come here I feel like I'm on vacation and although the service isn't great, and the food is nothing special, the prices are good and this place is worth checking out!

Drinks: Pretty good. View: Great, if you are looking at the lake. But don't look up... if you are under the canopy, expect many spiders over your heads.

Still waiting for a quesadilla and salad after an hour....and no offer for more drinks. Good thing it's so pretty here. Then a manager or hostess asked how we were doing - I requested water for both of us...she comes back with a pitcher of water and no glasses, refills my ice tea glass and is about to leave without giving my dining partner anything...I immediately interjected that he needs a water glass...*rolling eyes*. Top it off with waitress explaining 3 times (I got it the first time) that I have to take the bill to the bar because I had started a tab there...then the bar staff ignores the food check and when I ask about the $36 food bill he was flummoxed. Then we had to find the waitress again to get checked out properly....WTF. She couldn't bother to pick up the bar tab, add it in and charge me then bring it to the table and let me sign????

    (1)
  • Jen K.

What can you say? It's RIGHT on the water, so that's what you're really paying for. Everything looked a little outdated and the bathrooms were kinda gross, but you can't beat sipping a pina colada right on the dock.

    (3)
  • Beth H.

Limited menu and pricey, hot dog and fries $7, lobster roll and fries $19. Drink on ice must have just been placed there, room temperature.

Wait time was over 45 minutes while there were several tables open. Host was rude to guest that were in front of us when they questioned why people weren't being seated at the open tables. We attempted to ordered three different items off the menu and they were out. We ended up ordering the grilled chicken sandwich which wasn't bad. It was suppose to come with chips and we got fries instead. After the food was dropped off we never saw the server again until we asked for the bill. I'd recommend this place for a bottle of water and great sunsets. Other than that service was terrible and the food was over priced.

Stunning view. How do I put this "nicely"? It's the best VIEW in Burlington. Go for drinks and sunset, but if you get the food, you're on your own. Wear bugspray and sunblock and you're in business! Don't expect the staff to be attentive. They're taking in the view too. Bring a group of friends for sandwiches and fun, or a date. But again. Don't rave about it and it's hit or miss.

I went here for Monday night salsa dancing and totally loved it! The salsa class was fun and the view of the water was great. I will definitely be back for drinks and sunset. :)

I could smell the poop (or was it the lake) a mile away... but we went in anyway. This is one of those places that exists solely because somehow someone got a lease in a waterfront location... and then decided no effort should be expended to do anything with it. The drinks are a joke... $9 for a mojito that was quite literally weaker than a (light, American) beer... with one tiny lime wedge, 3 mint leaves, and a gallon of soda water. Party foul. Let's be honest -- you're only here for the view... so do yourself a favor... walk down on the dock, snap a new Facebook pic and walk out... your money is useless here.

"I hate when I spend some of my alcohol allowance like this. It makes me wish for a do-over," was the quote from my boyfriend when we left there. A place with 5 star potential and it was all wrong. Not all of it was the bars fault, but it factors into the experience -Comatose bartenders -Unfriendly staff -Cash only -Gnats everywhere -The entire railing along the tables along the area when you walk in covered with spider webs -The upstairs was closed and the deck is in the direct sun making it too much to enjoy a beer -The bar set up is so the patrons face the building, not the water, which is the reason you go there

We were only a table of two so we waited forever for a table as they happily sat groups of 4-6 who arrived after us. After over an hour of buying drinks at the bar and checking in with the hostess, she finally seated us, insisting she was doing us a favor giving us a 4 top when we were only 2. The service after that was quick (probably hoping to get rid of us). We got the fish tacos which was only 2 tacos but they were huge and the lobster roll. The food good but nothing special. Overall the atmosphere was nice watching the sunset on the lake but the $75 bill didn't match the service or the food. Felt like considering it was typical bar food and a few mediocre margaritas should have been half that price.

After a 4 hour drive, a dinner, and a walk through downtown Burlington, and a whimsical bike parade that went by 4 times, we wanted to see the lake. Patch had heard of this great place on the water called splash... he raved about it until we got there where he realized he forgot to mention he had actually never been. Having looked it up on yelp, I claimed it would be touristy, with bad food.. I wouldn't say I was hesitant of going but I was giving a disclaimer. Both yelp statements was probably true (We never ate here so this review is solely on the drinks/atmosphere/views). Walking to Splash we asked two kids who looked local per their hippyness how the restaurant was... they said something along the lines of "the food is garbage... good views"... Regardless, Patch had set our expectations high and we were curious and excited to go. When walking in, one member of our group immediately met the owner (I originally thought her name was "Linda" but it is in fact Barb) who when asked if he could have a job here, Barb claimed "No.. you can't handle it". Barb likes to vacay in the VI's (not sure which one's) in the off season (who wouldn't like that!). We got some quality "yachty" summer drinks (I got a Dark and Stormy) and sat to watch the sunset. Things that I would want to know if I was reading this Yelp review: 1.The drinks are very strong and the cups are very big (and fun/spring breakish!) 2. the view, is absolutely breath taking. One of the best views in all of Burlington which allowed for us to get a lot of really good pics (definitely insta worthy). 3. There was live reggae music jammin on the roof deck (we never made it there but it sounded great). 4. Not 100% touristy... I would say 70% tourist, 30% yachters (Which still may be tourists but on a different level). 5. It has an excellent view of the flagship Vermont Hilton property, in case you get too many strong drinks and want a recommendation on somewhere to stay. It also is in the same block as "The Skinny Pancake", incase you need an unreal breakfast in the morning after your stay at the Hilton (although I am sure the Hilton offers a delicious complimentary breakfast). Patch's insistence of going to Splash was well merited and appreciated. I would definitely come back for some after dinner drinks, knowing that it is a huge tourist trap, and in line for a great view (however I definitely would not try the food).

The only good thing about this place is the view (and the only reason it gets a star!) so by all means, have a drink here and enjoy the sunset, but skip the dining. There are so many good options in Burlington, this is not one of them! ;)

    (1)
  • Ed B.

Overpriced. Mediocre, in attentive service. Inflexible with the menu. Tiny portions, other than the kids grilled cheese, which was outstanding. This would be 1 star if not for the location and scenery. Do yourself a favor, walk out, maybe grab a drink, soak in the amazing scenery, and leave to eat somewhere else.

The view is unbeatable. This is the best place to sit and have a drink. Really, it's the best place to sit and do anything arbitrary. It has its pitfalls, namely expensive drinks, cash only, and the upstairs is often reserved for private events. The bonus is, I could sit here pretty much all day.

I went here with my Mom and baby for lunch. We asked to sit at an empty table near the water and was told it's for more than 2 people. Does the little one not count? Why are all the tables near the water large? The table we wanted was empty for over 30 minutes. Then they seated 2 people at the now-empty table next to it. The prices are steep, but we figured we'd get a good meal and a great view. The meals were not good. I ordered a salmon sandwich ($14.95?) and can't remember getting a smaller piece of salmon served as a main course. It was way smaller than the Portuguese muffin it was served on, with a small portion of cold fries on the side. My Mom was excited about the fish tacos ($13.95?) and quite disappointed at what she got. Small portion of fish and the sauce was too spicy for her. If the menu said they would have a little kick, she would've ordered something different. The tortillas were stale, the ingredients fair (iceberg lettuce, cheap shredded cheese), with no side. Go to Breakwaters or bring a picnic and find a nice place to enjoy the view. I will never go here again.

Splash is located on a floating dock ON lake champlain. You really can't beat the location, especially when the afternoon sun is drifting over the lake. The dock/bar is also home to some large yachts which make for great day dreaming. While the drinks were pricey, $9 cocktails, I couldn't help but sit there with a big smile on my face, enjoying my drink, the view, and my fantasy of owning one of the large speed boats.

Fantastic location, right on Lake Champlain and the harbor. We watched the sun set while sipping excellent frozen margaritas, sitting at the bar. Though we didn't order food, it looked decent.

BEWARE OF THIS TOURIST TRAP!!! Went there with in-laws, since they wanted to eat by the water. Ugh! Service was the only thing decent about this place. 1. It is cash only. Seriously? At the prices you charge, get a credit card processor! 2. Food is only so so. Only thing I liked were the sweet potato fries. My "Cuban" sandwich was really underwhelming. 3. Prices. I understand this is a tourist trap, but c'mon now, your food has to be A LOT better to be worth the $$$

We went there for the view, but we will not be going back. We were seated in back behind the boats. When we asked to be moved to an open table that had a view we were told they were for only larger parties. Despite the fact the restaurant has six open tables they refused to move us. The restaurant also has seating upstairs that they never even offered us. The biggest concern was that their was going to be a switch in wait service due to us wanting to change tables. This rigid policy shows no appreciation for good customer service. Upon exiting, the waitress manager said "she doesn't want our kind here". We're not sure what she meant by that. We strongly do not recommend this restaurant.

We went on one of those all too rare perfect Burlington evenings weather-wise. The surroundings were particularly beautiful and for that I gave them the rating I did. I had the lobster roll which was a tad different than your regular one and I felt, pretty bland. The lobster tasted like it'd been frozen or cooked elsewhere and carted to the restaurant. Fries were better than average but you don't go out to eat for french fries. My wife had the Angus Burger which she didn't seem terribly impressed with either. In sum, gorgeous place to go have a drink but I'd probably go elsewhere for the meal afterward next time.

Before I moved to Las Vegas in 99', I lived in VT 9 years. So I've had some experience with the food here in BTV. Most of it has been pretty good. I'm just wrapping up a week vacation here and this Splash at the Boathouse has some of the WORST restaurant food I have ate in a long time between BTV and LAS. The 3 others I was with could agree with this statement, 2 being local. We ordered fish tacos, beef tacos, margarita pizza and a pork sandwich. The plates were not cheap either, all in the range of $11-$14. All of the food we had was bad and quite frankly, gross. Portions are legit but the quality of ingredients and flavor profiles were way off. Quantity does not prevail over Quality. I can get into details with why the food was awful but that would be unnecessary and a waste of our time. If you want to try these plates for yourself, go ahead but you'll pissed that you did. We should've complained about the food but we just wanted to get the heck out of there and move on, it was my last night in town. Also, Because the place was packed and I don't think the manager would have cared. They clearly should know better. BTW, the creamsicle drink was not good either (more like a milk and vodka with a splash of OJ) The beer selection was good and the price $4-6 was fair. I would have rather paid more for the beer and they would use that extra revenue to invest in their food. Server was friendly, and timely although somewhat unprofessional (younger kid). Everyone talks about the view. What they should talk about is the location in proximity to the waterfront which, is right on the water. The view was blocked by expensive boats pulled right up to the dock space where the tables are located. So if you like looking at boats docked really, really up close (10-25 ft away) blocking the actual harbor area, then you'll enjoy the view. Anyways, this place was disappointing to say the least. If you value your money, time and food palette, I would HIGHLY NOT recommend Splash. Updated: 11:23:14, yup still the worst food I ever had. However, I had a couple of poor service experiences since then. Splash was memorably bad in all facets I don't think anywhere will beat it but will update again if it does.

If you are looking for the best place to take in one of burlingtons greatest asset, the waterfront - then look no further. Delicious and unique options for food and some of the best mixed drinks this side of the Lake Champlain. This has been one of my fav summer hot spots the past 3 years and you better bet I'll be there the first day they open!

Great cocktails, tasty food, what more could you ask for... oh, a beautiful view of Lake Champlain and the mountains of Vermont? An extra star for you, Splash! I ate here with my parents on a busy Saturday (the first it was open after the floods this spring) and was impressed. My dad and I both got the lobster roll, with which I subbed their enormous, tasty sweet potato fries. The lobster salad used a citrus-y vinegarette instead of the more traditional mayo. The roll was the split top, hot dog style. My only critique of the sandwich was the placement of the lettuce- it was enormous, unwieldy, and caused the salad to spill out of the bread. They should either chop the lettuce finely and sprinkle it throughout the salad, or just skip it altogether. As for the drinks, both the pineapple-strawberry daiquiri and the mojito were fantastic. Service was a bit slow, but on a beautiful night, you can expect it to be popular and packed... so learn to deal or don't eat at a restaurant on the water!

It seems the prime location by the lake (which provides some spectacular scenery) has led to this restaurant trying to cut costs in every other aspect of the operation. This is first apparent through the clear message that this is a "cash only" restaurant, conveyed through both a sign as well as a prompt notification by our waiter (Restaurants must pay a transaction fee for each credit card transaction, making it more costly to accept them as a form of payment). Even more evidence of penny pinching was found in the restrooms, which were filthy and lacked even a single paper towel. Even the food we ordered was undermined by cost cutting measures. The "Fish" Tacos would be more suitably described as the "Salad" Tacos - with a fish garnish. Only a sprinkle of fish rested on top of the salad, which filled the flour tortilla. The sauce was quite good, however, and added some nice heat to the dish. The lobster roll was simply not very tasty. Much like the fish tacos, it's name can be questioned due to the lack of lobster meat (though what was there was tasteless) and the overwhelming abundance of the other components. This, coupled with the the very watery lobster salad made the roll very unappetizing. The fries served with the roll were very good, however. The cheesecake we ordered for dessert was also decent, though I have had better. While the magnificent lake view may draw you in, don't come to Splash expecting a decent meal, but rather a sub-par snack.

Stopped here for a drink and a snack to kill time. Crowded, and hostess would not seat us in a shaded area as we requested. Apparently those tables were reserved for larger parties. Lots of young college types who tend to get louder the more they drink. High priced for what you get. Service was mediocre. One good thing was being about as close to the water as you can get. Come here to be by the water - nothing else.

Great view. Good fries, decent crab cakes, mediocre tuna melt. Strong drinks, but...don't bother tipping bartenders. Big or small tip, no better service. Why bother?

right on the water and amazing view of the water, boats and jet skiing etc. I love this place in the summer, my girlfriend took me and it was just absolutely magical I think the world of this place, great food, atmosphere and very nice and helpful staff. Also the cocktails we got were lip smacking goddamn good. The one i got was a lemon mixture of fresh fruits and sugar rounded on the rim of the glass.

  • Bradley K.

This one's simple: an amazing setting right at the water's edge balances out average food. If you want waterfront seating, this is one of the only games in town. Usually a few time a summer it's worth wandering down.

The atmosphere at this restaurant is fabulous - you are right on the waterfront at the boathouse. There are docks to walk out onto and boats come right up to stay. It is also a nice place to sit and watch the sunset on the lake. That being said, the food was quite expensive (about $8.50 for a burger and an additional $1 for cheese, bacon, etc.). I asked the waitress to substitute fries for sweet potato fries and was not told of the additional $2 charge. It took a long time for our food to arrive and it was served in a plastic dish. Overall, it was an OK experience, but probably a place I would not go again for food. It is definitely not a place I would go to if I was looking for a romantic experience as it is quite casual and cramped.

The other reviews have pretty much nailed it. Food is ok. Nothing special, but not terrible. I had the fish tacos. I've made better (much better) at home. However, the view of the lake and mountains was great.

We stopped here while wandering the waterfront, and since it was almost lunchtime, we decided to try it out. The view was fantastic, you are basically sitting on a dock right on Lake Champlain! We dallied over lunch just so we could enjoy the view across the lake, watch the boats, and see the cruise ships pull out. Oh yes... our server was very polite and helpful, service overall was very good. We both had chicken salad wraps with fries, they were pretty tasty, better than we expected., and reasonably priced, considering our location. It is cash only but they have an ATM on premises if you need it. We found it clean and comfortable. We had very pleasant early fall weather, and it was very comfortable. I am surprised that in such a decent sized city there are not more eating establishments on the lake. This has a terrific location! Next time we are in Burlington we will make it a point to have dinner there and try to time it with a sunset. It must be spectacular, as even the view on this day, across the lake to the Adirondack Mountains in NY, was very special. Go enjoy it! It is a seasonal restaurant, so check to be sure it is still in operation depending on when you go.

  • Cathy W.

The lure of this place is that you are right on the water (tables are on a dock), with a prime view of boats, boaters, bike path. The only thing missing is the smell of salt air. While we were sitting and waiting (and waiting and waiting) for our lunch to be served a couple of burly meatheads came roaring into the harbor in their power boat, causing one of the local sailing lads to shout into his megaphone "Burlington is a NO WAKE zone!!!" Exciting times during our one hour wait for BLT's and burgers. (We actually started to feel a little seasick!) Once it arrived, BLT was good. Prices aren't cheap - it was $36 plus tip for lunch for three. Bring a windbreaker or sweater - even on a nice day it can be breezy chilly. Don't expect a lot from the waitstaff. They sit you promptly but then kinda walk off and forget about you. (Maybe polishing their megaphones)
