Went here on a late night run while visiting my friend whom lives here in VT. Its open until 3 am which is great if you need your breakfast to start real early. They have a huge selection of things to choose from both food and beverages. They even have cigarettes and lighters. The staff was friendly and the food came quick though I'd imagine it would take slightly longer if it were in the morning. This is place is definitely more for take out as there are no seats. I only tried a 1/3 of my friends steak and bacon sandwich and boy was it good. Everything was flavorful and was hot. I'll be sure try something in full next time we go here.

Total late-night piss pot. Open 20 hours a day? Can't walk to Ahli Baba's because it's more than a block away from What Ale's You? Perfect! KKD will fix that right up. The "Rise & Shiner" is only acceptable if and only if you need a friend to keep you on your feet. Last call Thursday through Saturday night? Worst. Lines. Ever. Oh yeah, baby. Just follow the drunken cattle, don't pee on the building like those silly frat boys. That being said, KKD has probably saved my life, although I never think I have been able to fully eat one of their sandwiches. For that it garnishes an extra star.

As of recently because of my new work schedule I come in a lot closer to closing than I would like. In my last review I mentioned how good they were close to closing, but they haven't been good for us in the past few months. These are some of the most common issues: Mozz. sticks without cheese in them. Over and over again they have neglected to add my cheddar cheese to my salad. Forgetting to add the ketchup and marinara to the bag. Just too many times they have failed at one or more aspects of our meal. It's really disappointing. Never getting late night mozz sticks from here again. I call ahead as I'm driving and get there 15 minutes or so before closing. On occasion the service isn't as friendly or nice. There are two people working there that are really awesome tho and usually when they are working everything turns out better for our food.

After a weekend in VT, on Sunday when we are headed back to MA, it's our tradition to stop at the Kountry Kart for our final taste of Burlington. We both order a small Rise & Shiner - my husband with two meats and me with one - and have a near-perfect on-the-go breakfast. The sandwiches are made to order, served hot, wrapped in foil. Between the egg, the meat, the melty cheese all piled between that warm, soft roll - what more could you ask for? The small is BIG, so I can't even imagine what the large sandwich looks like. We've never been in there when the place didn't have a line, but the service is fast and the wait time is short - take-out only.

My favorite sandwich shop in Burlington! My usual is the ceplieki with Cajun chicken, bacon and many other delicious toppings. It's quick service with lots of side & drink options. Sells alcohol and have breakfast ALL DAY! Amazing! Also open till 3 am so it's perfect for those college students craving a midnight snack or some munchies.

Second time we've eaten from here. Quality breakfast, very reasonable price. We shared a large Bacon shiner, more than enough for 2. Wish they had iced coffee. Would definitely go back.

I gorged myself on a BLT+Chicken sub. It was very tasty, though I shudder to think of the amount of calories I had consumed. I think I went for a long swim after this one. Will definitely go again.

If you're not here for the breakfast sandwiches, you won't be impressed. So get a breakfast sandwich. Because they're amazing. My first trip to KKD was following a bachelorette evening in Burlington ... my second was the morning following the wedding. My husband was a bit skeptical that the food would hold up vs. my initial visit (when my judgment may have been slightly, er, impaired), but then promptly announced it had been worth the 40-minute wait. Downside: they completely lost our order, so there was a 40-minute wait. And if the counter girl hadn't hounded the staff over and over to hurry up when she realized the mistake, it would have easily been an hour. We got the first thing on the menu (riser? shiner? one of the two). I like mine with bacon and the egg cooked all the way through (runny eggs = ew). It was perfect and delectable. I can't tell what makes it better than a normal breakfast sandwich, perhaps the hashbrowns? But I can't imagine a trip to Burlington without stopping at KKD for one of these delights. Standing room only (don't sit on the counters; they will yell at you) and it's been packed both times I was here. So be prepared to stand and be prepared to wait. Then be prepared to fill your mouth with greasy deliciousness.

Drunk food is drunk food, but a chicken cheese steak isn't always a chicken cheesesteak apparently? It was fine, but i was looking for diced chicken, not cubes or strips or whatever they were slangin'. Get there before the lines.

For a college town, Burlington has a surprisingly limited variety of late night eats. How am i suppose to sober up if when there's only like three places to get food. Kountry Kart Deli (KKD) is one of the better options for those post-bar drunk cravings, mostly because out breakfast foods in a sandwich is perfect when the night is done. Overall, the food is standard fare. The Shiners are breakfast sandwiches and are my go to if i decide to come here. Everythings hot and salty, exactly how i like it. DON'T get the fries. They come in cups and are stupidly grease-y and soggy. I'm not even sure how they did that. Also, the place is pretty expensive. 8-9 bucks for a breakfast sandwich? Its a tough pill to shallow, but probably your best option if you ain't feeling pizza

  • Alex C.

Good inexpensive food. The staff is always really nice and the food is tasty. I like the order online feature, good for a tough morning. I like the Philly cheesesteak the best, but the breakfast is a good second place!

  • Jay P.

Good place for greasy breakfast sandwiches and late night food. The food is your standard "pub" type fair, fries, onion rings and sandwiches. I think they're stuff is a little to pricey for what it is though.

Hands down the best place to go after a late night of imbibing in Burlington. Without fail, the Rise and Shiner sammie hits the spot. I wish they had places to sit, but at 2am, it doesn't matter too much. HINT: unless you don't mind witnessing that night's hookup/breakup, an obnoxious band of bachelorettes or douche-y frat boys holding court, plan to get there right at 2am or just before. The clubs/bars close at 2 and that is the #1 desto after they're all shooed out of their respective bars/clubs.

The woman there now is so much nicer than the girl from a couple of years ago! Makes all the difference in the world. Get the shiner - only your cholesterol will regret it.

After a punk show at Club 242 Main. Throwing fists is a tiring thing. I need some refuel and recharge. Kountry Kart took care of me while walking around the streets of Burlington. Couple of beers to refuel and now needed some food. Rise N' Shiner and late night eating. Made for a perfect meal. Locals all talked it up and it did not disappoint. Still have the eat 10 get one free card in my wallet as wishful thinking.

The universe was working its magic tonight. As we walked to the car after a few stops at the local watering holes, I was thinking, man, I could use some grub. We were in front of the Kountry Kart. We stopped in and asked for a reco.... I got the large breakfast sandwich. My description could simply read: mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm. Nuff said. They are open late: 3am. Great late night stop!

If i lived anywhere near KKD it would be an absolute problem because i would probably gain 900 pounds eating this food ALL OF THE TIME. This deli is amazing, in fact if they were down in NYC they would probably be one of the top deli's in the city no question. The sandwiches are all jam packed with the ingredients they list and i mean "jam-packed" they don't skimp you like other places do. You know those places where it looks like you have a ton of meat and when you open up the sandwich it's more bread than meat. Everything is hot and fresh made right in front of you pretty fast, even there soft-baked cookies are amazing. They also have these Tropical Lemonades which tastes like Skittles mixed w/ Lemonade it's unreal! (get the Raspberry Lemonade or Mango Lemonade Glass Bottle in the fridge) They have a ton of different tasty choices for sandwiches but my personal favorite has to be "The Mahoney" it has everything but the kitchen sink in it. It comes with Chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and chipolte mayo on a toasted bun. Once you sink your teeth into it your eyes will roll in the back of your head it's that good. Also if you get a large one, it's going to last you for two days unless you have the appetite of a Lion then you will probably have the other half in a few hours. My other favorite sandwich there would have to be "The Triple Threat" which probably has the most items in all the breakfast sandwiches. It has Bacon, sausage and ham topped with 3 eggs and 3 hash browns with 3 times the cheese. YES YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY. If this place doesn't make you happy and also satisfy your appetite I really don't know what will. ALSO OPEN LATE NIGHT which is very very clutch

It was our last night in Burlington, and we wanted something quick and easy. Kountry Kart Deli had some pretty good Yelp reviews, so we decided to give it a shot. The people behind the counter were very polite, we couldn't have asked for better service. The Italian Hero sub that I ordered was classic. Aside from the awkward romaine lettuce that was floating on top of the sub, it was spot on. It's one of those things you'd get when you don't know what you want for lunch/supper. The French fries were hot and fresh, and my daughter mowed down her cheeseburger rather quickly - so I'd say that was pretty good as well. In response to Theodore W.'s review about the drinks in the case being warm, I would agree that they were not nearly as cold as people have come to expect from the cold case, but they weren't room temperature or anything. If possible, I'd recommend they turn the temperature on that case down about 10-15 degrees more. All in all, it was a great value.

So good!!! Open late for munchie foods. Get the steak and bacon shiner... I got w/ extra hot sauce. They are fast and cook the best sandwiches in Burlington. Everytime I think about this place I need to go... it's an issue.

STEAK, SAUSAGE, HAM, BACON, TAYLOR PORK ROLL, AND A CRUNCHY ASS HASH BROWN SMOTHERED WITH AMERICAN CHEESE AND SQUISHED INSIDE OF A HERO To be honest, I've never actually ordered the Barnyard Shiner, but I marvel at the beauty and creativity behind it. This sandwich really was made for me, but like a wimp, I usually settle for the Rise and Shiner. Along with the Belly Bomber found in the Bronx, this is one of the tastiest breakfast sandwiches I have encountered in a deli. No trip to Burlington is complete without a trip to KKD's. Many people have designated this their late night stop, but I see no problem stopping in at any time of day. I do wish there was at least one seat, so I didn't always have to eat my sandwich on the way out of town. Everything looks great on the menu, but during my limited trips to Burlington, I can't escape the lure of the Rise and Shiner. Well done.

Every Sunday morning during my freshman year at UVM I'd walk down Main St. from Central Campus to eat at Kountry Kart. Turkey, Bacon, American Chese on sourdough bread. Dry. A chocolate chip cookie and a soda or an apple juice to wash it down. At the time, they even accepted Cat$cratch, so for all intents and purposes it was free*. I was there every Sunday afternoon. Through rain, snow, sleet, hail, sub-zero temperatures, whatever. Did I ever deviate from my order? Sure, once or twice, to get a Shiner (bacon, hash brown, egg and cheese on a roll), which is one of the greasiest and greatest breakfast sandwiches ever created. If the weather was nice i'd walk over to City Hall park and eat my sandwich, then trudge back up the hill to my dorm. If it wasn't nice, I'd trudge up to my dorm and eat my sandwich, smoke some pot, pop some VIcodin and bliss out for a few hours in front of the TV. Yup...those were the halcyon days. The salad days. The good ol' days. Pick your cliche! I went here a few weeks ago when I was passing through town visiting some family and -- to my complete lack of surprise -- it was still just as good as it was 11 years ago. If that's not worthy of five stars I don't know what is. * if your parents gave you a couple hundred bucks to deposit in the account to spend on food and amenities each semester, you're not technically paying out-of-pocket. You're paying out of THEIR pockets. Ergo, "free".

So was in Burlington over the weekend and had been to KKD a few times. As noted before is a few reviews if you aren't coming from a night of turnup or being obliterated from clubbing, the other sandwiches that aren't breakfast sandwiches aren't that good. Breakfast is where it is at. The Shiner double meat is bomb. The other stuff is iffy. But still don't take my word, go check it out!!

  • Alan N.

Eek! Methinks not. This used to be my spot freshman year. Now a wise and mature sophisticated senior, I now realize how miserable this place is. Anything beside the rise and shiner is below average. I've gotten the steak and cheese here a couple times and you can literally squeeze the oil out of the sub like a dirty dish wash sponge. The oil actually looks like dirty dish water which is pretty ironic. If you do end up here after a long night of drinking (which the only way I'll ever go there is if I'm in a complete drunken stupor) I recommend just sticking with the rise and shiner since that's the only thing they know how to make. Anything besides that is over their heads. KKD wouldn't have left such a dirty aftertaste in my mouth if their service wasn't so awful. Probably the worst service I've ever had to deal with. It feels like you're asking them to do you a favor every time you order a sandwich. They've yet to grasp the concept that the "customer comes first". If you're ready to deal with angry, incompetent pricks (yeah I'm talking to you short dark hair stocky iron chef who mans the grill) then give this place a whirl. If not, I advise to head to Pine street Deli or Henry street Deli. Both places are exponentially better than this establishment.

  • Brian K.

Quality control! Inconsistencies may loose you customers. When the food is made right it is - delicious! When it is made wrong - waste of money. Also, a ham an cheese sandwich on wheat bread should not cost 9.50.

This place is great! I've only been here once, and only ordered 2 sandwiches so far, but the experience was great. I got a bacon Riser sandwich and also the Italian Hero. Like some of the other reviews mention that it does take a while to get the sandwiches made, there is a good reason for that. Peeking around the counter, you see that as the orders come in, the ingredients are cut fresh and hasn't been laying around for a few hours. The bacon Riser was the first to be consumed because it was a hot sandwich while the Italian Hero was a cold sandwich and boy was it good. It was bacon, egg, cheese, and a hash brown. This is genius. The Italian Hero I didn't get a chance to eat later in the day but even when cold, it was delish, plenty of meat and fresh veggies. Overall, I think that this is a nice little shop where I would stop by many many more times if I had the opportunity. This will be the first place I come back to next time I'm in VT.

We make a special trip in town to eat the Phiily Cheese steak, I have not eaten a better cheesesteak in Vermont. My hubby does not like the bread soggy so we order it and head over to City Hall park to eat them directly. Yum. The Riser is the best breakfast sandwich in town with the best value and the only place to find taylor pork roll in the vicinity. The staff is super friendly. Love KKD!

  • Nate T.

The Rise-and-Shiner...literally, as good as it gets. This is the breakfast sandwich of all breakfast sandwiches. I've ordered from here about 10 times - usually the morning after a long night of drinking. This hits the spot. Only once was I dissatisfied because of some super dry bread. Four stars because its a tad pricey (~$18 for 2 large sandwiches) but you certainly won't leave hungry.

Is there anything better then the Veggie Shiner? Hashbrown and eggs and choice of 3 veggies (mushrooms, onions for me) and cheese. Happy breakfast happiness:) My husband had one of the meat shiners and was equally happy. I am now a Shiner addict.

  • Wendy K.

My favorite place in Burlington! The hours are perfect - 19 1/2 Philly Cheesesteak with double cheese... hmmm Rise and Shiner hmmmmm I prefer the hoagie (or wedge, where I am from) french bread version of all of their sandwiches. Go out, get drunk, eat here!

  • Marla Z.

My husband took me here on our trip to Burlington, VT for a wedding. We split the large Rise and Shiner and it was excellent. By far the best thing we ate on our trip. It wasn't too greasy, tasted fresh, and was the perfect amount for sharing (large size). I didn't feel too weighed down after eating half of it. Great choice for breakfast in Burlington. A real local gem.

  • Krystal C.

While visiting my in-laws in VT I told the hubby I had a taste for a sandwich. He told me he was taking me to the best sandwich spot in VT. Assuming the only time he had been here was to sober up after the bar, because this place was far from great. I ordered a peppered turkey sandwich and a cup of chili. It was the sloppiest sandwich I have ever payed for. The chili had an odd flavor to it and I couldn't really identify what kind of ingredients were in it. Definitely wouldn't come back here unless I was drunk.

In the category of Sub and Sandwich shops-I give them 4 stars. Fresh and fast. Try the roast beef grilled with mushrooms, topped with cheddar and garlic mayo. Good stuff. I'll definitely hit them up again.

The subs are good. The shiner is the best. The buffalo wrap was awful. And as far as people complaining about the service what do u expect....

Oh my goodness KKD the only thing wrong with you is that you aren't in Boston! I was visiting a friend up at Champlain and we stumbled in here around 2am. On him recommend I got the rise and shiner which was amazing. The place was packed with college kids (most of them drunk) which I found rather amusing but hey, if a place is crowded at 2am, it must be good! And it was! I could eat these every day. I would love to go back to try more of the menu.

during our short stay in burlington, I quickly found this spot as a great morning go to (until i got a local job up there, but that's neither here nor there). Anyway, their "rise and shiner" is my favorite breakfast sandwich of ALL TIME, and I've definitely had my fair share living in manhattan and bk. I always ordered a "small sausage rise and shiner" since when I tried eating a large one, i immediately felt like hibernating for a few months. If i'm ever back in burlington and have a morning to spare, I'll definitely hit up this spot. I mean, how can't you love a hashbrown patty + egg + sausage on a bulkie roll (vegetarians/vegans aside)?

    (5)
  • Conor D.

Holy good God in Heaven. The Rise n' Shiner is un-freakin-believable. Just the thought of that egg, cheese, meat, and hash brown makes me want to get in my car and haul across 3,000 miles of solitude just to stand in front of that down-home, 80s era counter and order one of these bad boys. Of course, the other selections on the board aren't too shabby either, but let's stay true to the signature item that has satisfied many a generation of UVM students, shall we? The only qualms I have have to do with the set-up (no seating), and some of the employees (yell at you if you try to eat on any surface inside and attempt to short change you if you're drunk). But the food is gold. Pure gold. And you have surely not completed a true Burlington evening without patronizing this establishment. Kountry Kart, please marry me. You may have your flaws, but I can see past them and pretend that everything is a-ok until ten years or so goes by and we both decide that we should see other people. God I love you. Don't change your steez.

I guess it's pretty impressive that KKD is open 20 hours a day. Late night eateries are pretty limited in Burlington and I can see this place getting plenty of business from the collegiate crowd. Having been on a deli sandwich binge as of late, I was in search of a cheap eat to satisfy my hunger. The sandwiches here are not particularly large, nor cheap for what you get, but it'll do the job (especially for those late night hunger cravings). I ended up with the cajun chicken cheesesteak, which had some spice, but didn't resemble much of a cheesesteak at all. Sure, there were mushrooms and peppers, but where were the tomatoes or lettuce? I'm glad that the chicken meat was breast, but without the cheese, it would have been too dry to enjoy. I got a marginally better sandwich from here than one from Subway's at nearly 40% more cost. Meh, it was worth a try. I hear breakfast is better here and maybe some of their daily special sandwiches are better on their ever-changing weekly menu.

The rise and shiner is indeed an inspired breakfast sandwich. Having said that, I'm not a fan of most everything else, here.

I give in...worth the 5.00 for that breakfast "shiner" ....KKD keeps it going and the students and community keep coming back.

  • Joseph P.

Rise and Shiner. or other words for drunk, need food. yeah it's not a place I would visit without being a bit "out of it" but seriously, this is the only place to get quality cheap food that is not a hot dog at 1am.

    (4)
  • Aimee G.

All I have to say is Rise & Shiners! MMMMmmmm. Good for after the club eats. Seriously I think about Rise & Shiners on a daily basis...sometimes I just go out, so I can get one at the end of the nite. Don't judge! That cheesy, salty, greasy yummy bacon-y goodness always hits the spot! Oh did I mention it was cheap? LOL.

  • Lauren V.

Open 19.5 hours! During freshman year before my roomie hit 21 and I got my fake, we would walk down to KKD around 2ish to meet up with people getting out of the bars. We would always ensure we had enough time to scarf down a rise and shiner or the 2-for hot dog deal. Or both. Don't judge! It's an uphill walk. Seriously. The rise and shiner is where it's at. Back in Boston now, the legacy continues as I have taken to ordering various menus off breakfast items to construct my own rise and shiner. But it's still not the same. I heart you KKD. If you are going to go after the bars, head over a few minutes early. There is barely standing room as soon as 2am hits. Seemingly every Champlain, St. Mike's and UVM student will edge themselves into this teeny tiny deli.

  • Ron M.

I've eaten here hundreds of times, because of it's accessibility and late night schedule. Beyond that be prepared for the worst customer service from some college kids (depending when you go, but there are only a few decent servers). Their sandwiches vary from barely edible to basically average, but way overpriced and anywhere in between. Their signature is the rise and shiner, better described as grissle infused deep fried nastiness between two pieces of bread. I've had more than a few, ALWAYS wondering why I did shortly afterwards.. So, besides their location and hours, they are based on reputation alone, which is shoddy at best. My favorite line when you call for a pick up order, (if you are ordering a hot sandwich), asking, "can I have the cheese melted?" Kountry Kart employee, their reply, hundreds of times is, "I'm not sure we can do that..." I simply say, "place the cheese on the hot item in the sandwich and it will melt" Again, we're not all rocket scientists..

  • Cherie C.

My friends in Burlington are big fans of the rise and shiner sandwiches. Not your typical breakfast sandwich, they put an egg, breakfast meat, AND a block of fried hash browns on a fresh round roll. And since they are open late, you can get them after a night out. I think that's exactly what they were created for.

    (3)
  • Brian C.

GREAT subs here! This is my favorite place to go after the bars. The Rise and Shiner (bacon egg cheese and hash brown on a sub roll) is the best. Roast beef and bacon with cheese is close behind. LOOONG wait times after the bars let out but worth the wait. Can be chaotic and can leave with a story for sure.

    (5)
  • Philip C.

4 stars for the Rise N' Shiner and nothing else. Not for the late night lines and not for the total lack of seating. Hands down, the Rise N' Shiner can take it all at KKD because it's one of the best sandwiches EVER. Pretty much every review before mine lists the ingredients but I'm going to do it anyway: egg, sausage patty, American cheese and hashbrown all inside of a soft white bread sub roll (that's a large and the only way to have it). They do offer a small on a bulkie roll if that floats your boat. You can choose another breakfast meat instead of sausage, such as ham or bacon, or be a total beast and order the Barnyard Shiner (all the above meats and ingredients plus steak and pork roll). I can't say that I've tried it yet because why mess with a good thing that I've been enjoying for years? There's never a bad time of day to eat a Rise N' Shiner but make sure you're ready for some greasy and heavy goodness. All this over one sandwich? Yup.

  • Lucy W.

I've gone to KKDs many times, mostly being dragged in by friends and the only way this place is getting 5 star reviews on here is because everyone who eats here while drunk thinks its the best place on earth. It's not. First of all, it is way too overpriced for the quality of food. It's not good, you'd be better off making yourself a drunken egg sandwich at home. Secondly, I had one of the worst customer service experiences on my entire life at kkds. I was trying to purchase a 99cent can of Arizona Iced Tea. They had placed $2 stickers over the 99cent price that appears on the can. So I found a can without a sticker and brought it to the register. The snotty college student working gave me the worst attitude when I told her she needed to sell me the can at the marked 99cent price. When I asked to speak to the manager she told me to "F**k off". I am not kidding. I had already ordered a rise and shiner and when it was ready she literally threw the sandwich at me. I took the sandwich and left without even paying. Yes, that was not the best way to handle the situation and maybe I shouldn't have tried to be a cheapskate by arguing the 99cent price, but why are they charging $2 for those anyways?! And an employee telling a customer to "F**k off" is inexcusable.

late night food in burlington vermont. very important for someone who used to live in NY. good choices and the staff is VERY friendly.

Everyone raves about the rise and shiner and I think it deserves that praise but the cajun chicken philly is amazing. This is the best place to go after a long night out and I think the best way to describe it is a convenience store with great food.

ya ya ya. rising shiner. also try grilled cheese with tomato. they also make the best honey mustard. good deli. all sandwiches are good. get the french bread. best drink selection around church street. cigarettes and blunts.... I would go here for the honey mustard alone. look out for the manager though. i dont know what he's smoking...

kkd is terrible. the food is overpriced, none of it tastes fresh and generally everything is made poorly. i've been in there once where i found my food acceptable. it was a grilled cheese with tomato. it also cost like 4.50 for 2 pieces of bread, 2 pieces of cheese and a slice of tomato. the second time i got the exact same thing, it was deplorable. cheese wasnt melted, bread was soggy and it was still stupid expensive. and whoever said their chicken parm was the best is a moron. the chicken parm i got here was a chicken tender with cold sauce spooned on top and a piece of provolone. i don't get why people love this place. i'm from new york, we have real delis there that all know how to make decent sandwiches at a way better price. i hope this place burns to the ground.
