I'm surprised by the low-ish star rating- we thought this place was great! Got the cheese board, scallops and a side of beets. All the food was delicious with a nice presentation. Service was fantastic, and they even had good live music. Great beer selection and reasonably priced for the area.

Normally we just meet people here for a few drinks...it's ok for this. One thing about this place is that late night bar food is pretty good....better than most places if you don't want a slice of pizza or an egg sandwich. The down side is the service. It's wildly inconsistent and no one seems to care. Our most recent outing we came in about 11:00 and sat down in the bar area. The waitress immediately met us and said we should go to the bar to order drinks, we asked for a food menu and she mumbled something angrily under her breath and dramatically spun away to walk off. When she returned, we asked if we needed to order food at the bar as well to which she responded "no" with over dramatic sullenness reminiscent of a 13 year old girl. For the remainder of the meal, she dramatically tossed glasses on our table when filling them...(when she did manage to come around), rolled her eyes, scowled, spoke with as much annoyed attitude as possible, and generally told us she didn't want to be there. Of course in between serving us...she did literally nothing else but lean on the corner of the bar speaking to a male customer, immediately transformed into a smiling, laughing, cheerful person. The situation improved only slightly when that customer left and she appeared to find a bit more time for work (which seemed to annoy her as well). When we asked the bartender if there was a manager on site...he told us that there was no manager on that night...nice. At least the food was good.

Let's start: we were sat down immediately but from the time we ordered to the time we were served it took 45 minutes. Reason given, "we were busier than normal." Oh. Ok. With that being said... Time to get new management. Oh. Did I mention that they ran out of bread. Who runs out of bread. My large order of flat iron steak was 6 pieces of medallions with 4 of the smallest fingerling potatoes. That's it. I've been to steakhouses and paid less than what was presented to me. Oh, don't get me started on the pompous "manager" who thinks that saying you're welcome or I'm sorry doesn't apply to her. At least she took off 50% from the bill. God bless her. Lesson learned! Last time going.

Junk. This place is inconsistent, cheap, and dumpy. I've been here multiple times and always left feeling disappointed. It's definitely overrated by the jokers that have poor taste and think this is a good place to go. Yes they serve strong drinks which gives the impression while drinking that the food is good while it's clearly below standard. Please stop coming here and thinking it's a good place. It's not. It's for drunkards who have decided to linger in Burlington after college. Please come here knowing what you're getting into. Drinks. And that's it.

Recently found out about this place, despite have driven by it many times. I came to Daily after I friend suggested we come for Tijuana Tuesdays. The tacos were a great size, two or three was a good portion and they were only $2 each. The food and service was very good! I was surprised not a lot more people were in there at 6pm. This place is great for the price and they often have specials on other days of the week.

I really wanted to like this place, but ended up feeling underwhelmed. I was looking for a place that was farm to table, and the website seemed to represent this place as that. We had an Open Table reservation, and that we probably didn't need a reservation. We had the BLT salad and the roasted garlic and truffle polenta fries. While both were okay, I felt the greens in the salad were a little old looking. I wasn't crazy about the sauces served with the polenta fries. I had a small plate of the local flat iron steak. The potatoes and the steak tasted okay, but I was not crazy about the kale puree. It reminded me of soylent green or green slime. My guy got the scallops and was pleased with his. I think really, this place deserves 2.5 or 2.75 stars. It was decent, but not fantastic for $100 meal. Our server/service was fine.

Hubby and I came here for coffee/cocktails and dessert after dinner one night during our stay in Burlington. Unfortunately, I couldn't try any of the fun cocktails on the menu (preggers) and my husband went with boring beer... but I would love to come back someday and try some of the options I saw on the menu as they looked great!! Regardless, we had a great experience here. I ordered a cappuccino and we tried the Turtle Cheesecake Rangoons, which were DELICIOUS. The bartender was super friendly and welcoming, and the environment was nice, with many windows so you could people-watch on the street.

I had dinner here with some friends on a Sunday. While waiting for friends to show up. I hung out at the bar. The bar offers an extensive list of beers, so you won't be disappointed at all. The head chef had just made some pre super bowl snacks, and the bartender was kind enough to share some with us. Once our friends showed up. We relocated to the green house where it was decked out in plants, and clear windows. That was my first time experience eating at a restaurant eating in a green house. Nonetheless, it was a good new experience. When it came time to ordering food, i got myself a grilled chicken sandwich. The wait was kinda long, and it wasn't too busy that night either so it was kinda disappointing. However, the sandwich was amazing! I would definitely recommend giving this restaurant try out when you are in the area.

Over the past couple of years we've been to Daily Planet now about a half dozen times. I'm in a bit of a quandary trying to decide what kind of review to leave because our experiences have been so mixed. On some occasions, we've had reasonably good meals here. The Cubano and the Portobello Panini sandwiches are both tasty options for lunch. And the Monday $6 burger night is a good deal. Tip: If you're ordering the chickpea burger, spend the extra buck or two and get it with the kimchi - the plain veggie burger is dry and insipid. On the downside, portions tend to be small. Some are tiny. For example, the Thai Green Veggie Curry for $13 is woefully lacking in the size department. And if you want meat or seitan, you'll pay an extra $6. For $19 you get a tiny plate of curry that would not satisfy even the most avianesque appetite. By comparison, Pho Hong's Panang curry ($9) provides three to four times as much food for less than half the price; and it's much better quality to boot. Daily Planet is not a favorite, but we'll probably return every so often - for burger night, if nothing else.

I went to college in Burlington and on my first trip back to the city since May I had dinner at the Daily Planet. I was with my boyfriend, and my old roommate and her boyfriend, and I was the only one who had been previously. On those occasions I had definitely enjoyed my food and recommended DP for the four of us. Where do I even begin to explain this joke of a meal?? It was so bad that afterward when we went for a drink, we couldn't help but laugh - humor that was soured by how much we had paid for such a disaster. Everything that could have gone wrong did, and it was completely different from my previous experiences. We didn't receive our food until 9:15pm, even though we had arrived at 7:30 and the place was more than half empty. A series of bizarre things happened - waitresses would fill one person's cup of water and walk away, even though others' needed refills. Multiple times, water was spilled on our table with no apology or attempt to clean up. We all had ordered drinks, and when we finished our glasses were taken away - no one ever asked us if we wanted another drink (we probably wouldn't have, since we were just ready to get out of there). We asked for separate checks (one per couple) and when the bill arrived it was all listed on one. It was never really clear who our server was - they seemed to be overstaffed by unilaterally incompetent people. The only food I actually enjoyed was the cheese board, obviously hard to screw up. I ordered the vegetable ragout, my boyfriend got some kind of maple chicken sandwich (which almost made him sick) and plain greens, my friend had the Gnocchi, and her boyfriend had the Ramen - probably the worst of the four. Not one of us enjoyed our food, but we ate what we could because at that point we were ravenous. At that price - $30 a person - it would have been one thing if we had terrible service but really excellent food . . . I don't know what to say, other than that it was an all-around bad experience and I would never go there again. Next time I am in Burlington I will stick to the old favorites. In the end, it was just a very overpriced joke.

I tried to eat here on Sunday night and the hostess was so rude. I have been a server for a long time and I fully understand how a busy night can quickly turn into a hectic one... However when I asked how long it would be for a table she rolled her eyes at me and said they had two big parties and that it would be 40 min. I said okay and asked if we could put our name on the list. She then gave me a frustrated look and said that if we were going to wait it was going to be at least an hour and that she wasn't taking names anymore. We were only a party of two and the outside and inside had at least 10 tables available. I was so turned off by this girls behavior that I will not try to eat here again.

We were walking around and saw a nice Itak on a wall with some fun lighting and outdoor patio, and even some live music. So we walked up to the hostess stand behind another couple and after about 4 mins a girl shows up. After she greeted other couple she greeted us with "can I help you?" Um yes WTF I am thinking. We asked to sit at a window table near the bar and she said that was open seating, which was fine, so we sat ourselves. Kind of odd. Our waiter Yanni appears rather quickly and only after my request wipes our table. He brings us done ware and asks what we'd like to drink. I ask him about the beer special "switchback". "What kind of beer is that?" "It's an amber." Is it lighter or darker"? "it's an amber". Okay fine. He asks "would you like the 16 oz or the special?" "What size is the special" he points to the menu showing me 12 oz, instead of simply saying it. Point is the guy isnt forthcoming and simply taking the order taking approach instead of engaging us. Guy is an idiot. After more of this attitude re our food questions we left and went to the French restaurant Leunig's around the corner and it was great! The guys attitude cost him a $14 or more tip as we would have spent $70 or more like we did a Leunig's. I am grateful cause yanni's lack of interest forced us to leave and we found a gem instead. Thanks Yanni!

Amazingly delicious food. But wow it's not much for the money. 8 pieces of ravioli for $16??? The drinks were okay. Not worth the price.

My friends and I are super bummed with the new menu. Don't go here if you're really hungry. The portions were way too small and our server was rude and entitled. I'll never go here again which is too bad.

I chose dinner at Daily Planet for a first date three years ago. I was meeting a woman I had met online during my first foray into online dating. I really wanted to make a good impression. As she walked in the door, our table was warmly lit by candlelight under a glass roof. Snow slowly obscured a nearby street light poking itself into view from the skylight. The gentle hum of the restaurant mingled with soft jazz in the background. I'll remember that night forever, in part, thanks to Daily Planet. There's so much to love about Daily Planet. This restaurant is magical. From the copper-engraved dinner tables to the aforementioned skylights, Daily Planet always has a vibe of mysticism. I've attended a company party at Daily Planet and that same vibe held true. Its close quarters were great for mingling with people and tucking away to steal a chat and a drink. Speaking of drinks, The Daily Planet has an eclectic smattering of mixed drinks and brews on tap. Try the "Espresso" for a post-dinner pick-me-up or the "Filthy Pickle" to have that "How does it taste?" moment with your dinner friends. The food is a great mix of local fare and restaurant staples. Vegans and vegetarians, beware! There's little to choose off the menu, but, it has been my experience, the kitchen has been happy to accommodate dietary needs by altering dishes from the menu or creating something unique. The Daily Planet is a restaurant that's hard to define. It's a place where you'll find a table that's your favorite. It's a place where the waitstaff will get to know you or your favorite drink. However, most importantly, it's a place that will certainly leave an impression.

We stopped in for dinner after a movie at the Roxy. Haven't been in years. The menu was fairly inspired and the food was pretty good. The entree prices were on par with most downtown restaurants this summer of 2014... meaning overpriced. Our waitress was so uninspired, unsmiling and unsure of herself...she didn't lay the groundwork for a welcoming or pleasant experience. Probably won't be rushing back, and not because of the food. The entire restaurant experience needs to be consistently good for me to have a desire to go back.

Came in here last night at 10:20 pm to get a bite. Most everything else was closed for dinner and only serving drinks. The place was pretty empty, but was eager to serve me. Ordered from the late night menu and started with the salad. Great greens, not cheap iceburg lettuce and everything tasted crisp and fresh, even in the dead of winter. The burger tasted like someone molded fresh beef in the back. It was full of flavor with a fresh bun. Tasted much better than a normal restaurant burger and miles better than a fast food burger. I didn't drink here so I can't comment on that side of the business, however, the late night menu was short, yet what I ordered passed the test.

I love this place on a cool late summer evening! When they open up the big garage door type windows to the street/sidewalk you'll enjoy the breeze. There's no view, no frills, just good music, good food, and cooks that aim to please. I wouldn't say it's a 5 star experience only because drink service / bartender experience is sloppy but easily fixed if you stick to beer or simple cocktails.

My wife and I have made the Daily Planet our go-to spot for comfort food and appealing ambience (always eating in the bar area) for several years now. We enjoyed the truly authentic Euro-bistro-vibe of the place--straightforward food and staff. She typically went for the mussels and I would go for one of the veggie burgers or a soup. We went in last week after being away for the summer and were disappointed to see the changes afoot with the new food plan. Change is good, but only if it's for the better. The menu is now a series of "light dishes" with steep prices. With mussels no longer on the menu, she opted for a hamburger ($13); I opted for the scallops ($14). My wife said the hamburger was OK. The bun looked lackluster and--having been to Hannaford earlier in the day--I'd bought tomatoes that looked worlds better than the golf ball on her burger. My scallop dish was a tasty appetizer--but with only 4 scallops on it and no "carb" included with it, it certainly was a light dish. Then there's the drinks. I've always known the Daily Planet places a surcharge on their beer, but considered it the price to pay for the overall experience. Earlier that night I'd been at the nearby Radio Bean and paid $1.25 less for the identical beer. Expect to pay around a dollar more per beer at the Planet than you would just about anywhere else in town. And--to round things out--the bartender, a fellow we hadn't seen before, wasn't exactly the most friendly or attentive fellow. We paid our $45 bill, still slightly hungry, and left, sorry to see an old friend go. I hope that the new chef reconsiders some of his plans, and builds on the Planet's previous success as a quality food hangout versus trying to remake--and ultimately destroy--it.

We had dinner here on a fairly busy Sunday night, Labor Day weekend. The entree's were definitely above the average Burlington food. Service was polite and quite attentive. I felt the prices are bit high for the serving size, but what restaurant isn't in Burlington? Would we go back? Certainly. Overall it was a pleasant and enjoyable experience. The scallop dish I had was perfect, although the artichoke sauce needed a bit of spice added. My wife had some curry-vegetable and rice dish which she said was done well. When I sampled that I said "boy, they have the curry flavor combination down better than most asian places".

Heard good reviews but disappointing experience with a party of 10 last night. The food was truly hit or miss with half the party unhappy and the other half pleased. I got the fried chicken and it was dry as a board and i needed my corn on the cob sent back when it was cold. One other sent back a completely over-cooked steak and several other people complained about food quality. The management did the right thing and comped the steak, since he completely missed eating with the group. They also had to comp our desserts when we waited 35 mins for them to come out, as well. The server was good but could have calmed us down by communicating a little more when things got slow.

This place is kinda cute. We sat on the couches inside the room that looks like a greenhouse. The food was "meh". Tuna dumplings tastes funnnnky and the sliders sounded good, but weren't. And I consider myself easy to please, as far as food goes. Drinks were nice! I had a jalapeño tequila martini and it was everything I wanted it to be. Ambiance and drinks were satisfying but they need to pick up they're game, as far as food goes.

Heard the food here was amazing, so I had to see for myself. Had dinner here last night and was not disappointed. I had the nachos, planet burger, and parmesan truffle fries. All were excellent. The food tasted fresh. I mean really fresh which makes a huge difference in terms of taste and quality. The service is very laid back. They are, even on a busy Friday night, not rushing you out the door to turn tables. Make reservations and don't be in a hurry. They have a good wine list, plenty of cocktails, and local beer if you decide to come for the drinks. Great place with a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Fine dining meals without being the least bit pretentious. It's a must try and must return frequently kind of place. Love it.

Went for dinner and drinks with party of four around 8pm on a Tuesday. Sat in the bar area, good crowd, but no music (weird). Drinks and service were good. However, the food was poor. Nachos were uninspiring, basically nacho chips with melted cheese, shredded pork and jalapenos. I make better nachos in my microwave. The salad had good greens but was overdressed. And the wings were atrocious: burned to the point of tasting like butane, and the polenta was served in a cold rock-hard clump. We have eaten dinner here before, in the restaurant area, and never had issues with the food. So unsure if the kitchen was having a bad night, if the bar area doesn't get the good stuff, or we just picked bad dishes. But it will be a while before I try this place again for food.

Went here with a group. All the food was delicious. Super crispy calamari, thick grilled cheese with a ginger carrot dipping sauce that was great by itself, juicy, thick burgers and fantastic desserts. S'mores creme brûlée was the favorite but the coconut cake was a close 2nd. Attentive service and a cozy room.

I would recommend this place for drinks and good date lighting. Great service, too. The bf and I went on 12/31, around 8:30ish. I recommend making a reservation if you plan to eat, this place gets very busy. The food left something to be desired. Specifically the calamari. If you've heard the story on This American Life, you're already avoiding this appetizer and sharing the chilling legend with your friends. My boyfriend hadn't heard this story, and I was willing to oblige because it was a special date and my treat. Some of the other reviews say good things about the calamari, they must have had a different chef than us. It was so rubbery and chewy we could only have a few rings. And regretted those few. It didn't taste like food. I had fish tacos (skip it) and my boyfriend had a burger. Burger was good, but came with literally no more than 15 French fries. A paltry amount. Next time I'll get the truffle fries as an appetizer because they looked tasty and I love fries. And drinks. Probably not for dinner, though. It was the calamari. I can't.

Loooove this place!! Always great service, delicious food and comfortable ambiance! My husband and I come here whenever we go out to eat-we love the specials. Also if it's not on the menu-a great cocktail is the 1575-creme de voilette, champagne and vodka-so good!!

Every time I'm in Burlington and my brother and I go out to tie one on, we always seem to end our night here. The bar in and of itself is a pretty typical bar with a good atmosphere. What confuses me about the bar is the, well, bar. They have a ton of different liquors and all the ingredients to be a great classic cocktail bar. That said, they're not a classic cocktail bar although I'm a classic cocktail snob. As a result, I've developed the following relationship with the bartender who's usually working when we're there: I order some classic cocktail (sazerac, boulevardier, etc.). She harasses me mercilessly for ordering such a drink. She makes some variation of the drink based on the recipe I give her. I thoroughly enjoy the drink. She continues to harass me when I order another. Lather, rinse, repeat. Maybe I'm a bit of a masochist, but I can't imagine a night out in Burlington without ending it here.

Terrible! Extremely overpriced AND over-salted AND greasey. Wanted something light before going to the theater so ordered the tapas sized scallops and a side of roasted Brusselssprouts. The scallops, at $14 for 3, were so greasey and salty that I was glad there weren't more (despite the price); the side of Brussels sprouts ($7+\-) was also strangely small though nicely cooked if you like salt and grease. Shared a tiramisu with a friend and found it so TINY that the dessert forks that were served with it almost hid it. Good thing the grease in the two small dishes I ordered had so many calories --- otherwise I would have been hungry! So: including a drink and tip (the service was excellent), spent about $40. Although thanks to the size of the servings, I was not overstuffed during the show, I was overwhelmed by thirst. DO NOT GO unless you like grease and salt. By the way, I've been going to the Daily Planet off and on since the 1990s. This is by far the worst incarnation.

My wife and I went here for restaurant week. Wow, it was all great! We both had the ravioli appetizer. She had the flank steak and I had scallops (see my picture). For dessert we split the ice cream sandwich and the chocolate peanut butter. It all looked and tasted excellent. Nice atmosphere, nice service, nice food. The martinis are just as good! As an update to this review, my wife and I went back two more times since the original visit. The second visit was great food, great atmosphere, but the staff seemed disoriented and it was difficult to keep their attention - the hostess, the waitress and other servers as well all had this sense of 'not knowing what was going on.' However, on the third visit, it was back to excellent service.

Me and my girlfriend came here for dinner Saturday night, 1/25. We had a reservation for 8:30, and we both had an excellent time. Everything was great... the food was delicious (especially the corn-crusted calamari), the drinks were, too (I got the bacon old-fashioned... yes, a bacon flavored drink, but I'm telling you, it's good!), and the customer service was great... waiter was very friendly, as well as the hostess. I highly recommend this place to anyone. 5 stars!

My first time here. I've been meaning to eat here since 1990. We ate on the bar side and had a great bartender. He was very attentive. We ordered the crawfish app special and it was cooked to perfection and fun to eat. They had specials and local food, not to overpriced and diversity. We will be back for sure. The atmosphere was fun and all ages.

Daily Planet can be hit or miss. The ambience is consistently great, despite the restaurant's crowded tendency. The food takes risks, like the wild game sausage board or rabbit, wild boar, and duck-billed, platypus (or maybe it was Elk), and it does exceptionally well. Other times, it takes risks like Southern Fried Chicken with jalapeño honey, and confuses falls short of my expectations. That might be my grandma's fault. The drinks are weak but palatable, and the meat comes from humane and sustainable sources. Prices are reasonable. Wait staff, variable. Hit or miss.

A small venue with a dark quaint atmosphere. Daily planet has really great drinks and good food for something small and light. Definitely more of a local spot. I've never had a bad experience here but also don't come here a ton. If you go, ask for Rachel M. As your waitress. She's awesome.

Absolutely fantastic and wonderful in every way! We had a large post-elopement family dinner here and it was pretty perfect. We were seated in their gorgeous greenhouse dining room where we experienced some of the best food and service EVER. I cannot recommend this place highly enough - for dinner or for cocktails. The new executive chef is spot on and the service makes this place a pleasure.

Daily Planet WAS my favorite place to grab good downtown. I still love it, but had a couple OK dishes last few visits. The atmosphere is wonderful. Dimmed lighting and candles in the main dining area. The solar area is lighted with local artwork and has comfy couches. The bar area is big and has quite a bit of seating. Staff is always friendly, and the establishment has a very local vibe to it. Now for my food review: Burgers are great! Mondays they used to have a special burger and beer for $10. Amazing deal. I believe this is still going on, but have not been on a Monday in a while. The other food I find that I love tends to change with the menu every few months. It's likely to be related to what's in season, and the menu is fairly small so it makes sense. I had a fried chicken dinner there on Thursday. Chicken was very good, and although it was leg and thigh meat, it was boneless. It had a honey glaze that I believe was mixed with Jalepeno. A nice flavor and spice. Sides included veg. and mac and cheese. Mac and cheese I found to be dry and somewhat boring. The visit prior to this I had a lamb special of the night in December. I found the meat to be very fatty and almost unedible. Very disspointing for every other experience I had loved my meal. Best part of the menu: DESSERT!!!! Pear roasted in red wine and spices served with icecream. Incredible. Another friend had chocolate cake, which was also very good. Never had a bad dessert there. For being downtown I find prices to be reasonable for being a slightly more upscale establishment. For local and quality expect to spend $15-$20 per meal. I will continue to go back, but not sure I would have had my bachelorette party there again like I did in December.

The restaurant sounds more like a newspaper from a Marvel comic, no? There are a handful of restaurants that offer burgers at happy hour prices during the winter to attract customers. Monday is burger night here at the Daily Planet so I thought I'd finally try theirs. For $6, you get their "planet burger," with local ingredients and house fries. For only $3 more, you get a pint of their draught of the night., which was the Magic Hat Odd Notion Apple Cider on this particular Monday. The burger patty itself was a bit on the dry side, but otherwise well portioned and nice grilled buns to go with it. You get the usual condiments, but tack on a buck extra for mushrooms, cheese, bacon or any other extras. The house fries were surprisingly good and addicting. For $9 total per person, it was a great recession-friendly dinner. Not the best happy hour $6 burger I've had, but slightly better than your average. Daily Planet based purely for their burger meal is a 3.5, but I'm bumping it to 4 stars for the friendly price tag and the great service. We were seated without any wait time, and the waiter was prompt, brought our food out quickly, and also brought out some bread while we waited. The rosemary bread with olive oil is actually quite tasty so make sure you fill up on that if you're still hungry. The rest of their dinner menu is limited, but the chicken and dumplings sound promising.

Wonderful calamari and fantastic service. The nachos didn't rock our world, but the atmosphere was chill and the prices were right. Great happy hour spot.

This was another place that came highly recommended by our waitress at the Ice House Restaurant. We were headed to Levity for Comedy after dinner and the waitress said, "Oooo, you MUST stop in to the Daily Planet afterward for a Dirty Gherkin Martini"! Ummm.....YES PLEASE! It was more delicious than I had imagined. My friend sampled some of their "infused vodkas" which were equally amazing. My fav of those was the Chai infused. I imagined putting this in my coffee on snowy day (which we don't have in FL, but I can dream). The people at the bar were friendly and the bartender as well. We just enjoyed a couple cocktails and called it a night. Perfect place for a night cap!! I hope to be back one day.

I have been here many times, and rarely meet anything to my dislike. Great food, and a changing menu that has always been pleasing. The prices aren't outrageous, and it's a great local selection. I plan on returning soon.

I came here with a friend tonight. We are both from out of town. We were seated immediately and then the service went down hill from there. Another waitress came over and asked if we had been helped yet. Upon learning we had not, a waitress and trainee came over. We had soft drinks which took forever to get. We ordered dinner and it took a very long time. I would give this place one star but the food was excellent. The waitress did not seem happy, kind of blah.. wont be back

Great place to get a drink or bite to eat. Also a great date location. The foods decent and the staffs friendly though maybe its a little pricey. When my bf and I would stop in it always seem to be over $50 (food and drinks). Though they have deals certain days of the week.

Burlington's least friendly bartenders paired with overpriced drinks. I don't think so! So I ordered a round of Jameson Picklebacks. The bartender gave us shots of Jameson paired with shots of what looked live pickle juice but turned out to be the juice that the bar olives had spent the last who-knows-how-many years in. They look the same, so we didn't notice until we did the shot. That was one of the most disgusting things I've ever tasted. So we complained to the bartender and he told us that he was too lazy to go get pickle juice from the kitchen before so he had given us that olive stuff. He then got us another round with actual pickle juice. At that point I think all those drinks should have been free. Then I would have gladly forgotten about the whole thing. But no, the guy actually tried to charge us for 2 rounds!!! Really?? Needless to say there was no tip for him.

Enjoyed myself here. Had a few tasty drinks, some solid appetizers (the fried calamari was sooooooooo good), and enjoyed my entree. I had the shrimp with rice and beans, and just made sure to ask for it extra spicy (which they delivered on). If you're in or around Burlington, I'd definitely recommend this place as a fun dinner spot!

This is based solely on the Planet Burger. "Meh. I've experienced better." is definitely how I'd put it. I went with a friend for their Monday night special - $6 for the burger for a $4 savings. The burger comes with lettuce, tomatoes and onions. Anything else is an additional cost. I added the pork belly for $2, but I wish I hadn't. It was overly fatty and flavorless, adding nothing but grease to my burger. My friend added guacamole, cheese and mushrooms to hers, and it looked a lot better than what was on my plate. Complimentary bread and side fries were yummy. Service was great, but the quality of the food overshadows the experience.

this was far and away the best meal i had while in vermont. and i never would have found it if i hadn't asked a local where he would eat. the minuted he described the place as "eclectic" i knew i had to eat there. i entered with my family of 6 through the bar, and was a little scared at first, because it was so small, dark and loud. Thankfully one of the bartenders directed us into the garden room, where the Hostess seated our large party in a matter of minutes. Our server, Melody, was so cordial, and welcoming. we were tired, and it had taken us a while to find a place to eat, so there were a couple grumpy people in the group. but Melody took everything in stride. got our drinks quickly, and some delicious bread, and told a few jokes to get us all in a better mood. She was a delight. and when the food arrived, it was perfect. the menu is not large, a could salads, a few appetizers and 4-5 entrees plus the nights specials. However, they do a lot with what they offer. on the back of the menu is a list of all the local sources for the ingredients, most of which are also organic. These guys are putting things together in new and interesting ways, and it works beautifully. Pickled beets with granny smith apples, over butterhead lettuce with honey-mustard dressing. Fried chicken with homemade mac and cheese and a green apple/plum chutney. everything was amazing, both to the palet and to the eye. the presentation was simple, showed off the food, with out being pretentious. the drink offerings was also spectacular. they have a long list of house cocktails, all very original. i tried the sugar shanty, (gin, vermont bitters, maple and limoncello i think) it was delicious. the atmosphere was lovely. it was nice and dark, intimate and classic. in the garden room there were hanging plants, and skylights. it's nice that theres a separate bar and dining room. it allows for a more intimate setting in the dining room, while the bar can be a boisterous as it likes. the next time i'm in burlington, i will be back at the Daily Planet. i'm so lucky i found it the first time! its truly a gem.

I will need to update this once I eat a full meal there, but after a few interesting cocktails and a delicious appetizer, I know I'll be back! Last night I decided I needed some carbs to go with booze-juice, and enjoyed the pierogies. They are so good, filled with perfect consistency mashed potatoes, served with a homemade apple sauce, creme fraiche and lots of sauerkraut. They had a nice crisp on them from some time in the pan, and for 8 bucks it was a solidly hearty serving. Yum!

2 friends and I stopped in at 7pm on a Friday night without reservations and were promptly seated in the solarium. The server was friendly and politely fielded our questions about the menu. We enjoyed some of their unique cocktails and shared the seafood bourride, ginger beer mussels and tuna tostada. All were delicious and the sharing of plates was welcomed by the restaurant staff. I had taken these 2 friends to Daily Planet 3 years ago and they insisted we go back.

This is my second time at the Daily Planet and again I was thoroughly underwhelmed. My first meal (over three years ago) was very uninspiring and lacked flavor. For the price, I was not happy. I decided to give it another shot. I thought to myself, "Why not? I haven't been there forever, maybe it's gotten better!". Well, it hasn't. I am gluten and dairy free and the menu did not have many options. So I ordered a mixed green salad with toasted pecans, roasted garlic and grilled mahi-mahi. The fish was fine, nothing special. Just grilled fish. The garlic was the best part of the dish. The greens we disgusting. They were slimy, wilted and almost inedible. I was incredibly disappointed. Especially since they're focus is on local and fresh ingredients. It was not fresh and not good. To say the least, two strikes and this place is out. I will not be going back for food anytime soon.

A small group of friends and I dined at Daily Planet last Saturday night. We made a reservation for 6:30 and were seated immediately. With the complimentary basket of bread, we also began our meal with the corn-crusted calamari appetizer, which included "itzamma. balsamic reduction, aioli, and fresh lime" ($9). For entrees, two of us had the Beef Tips Burgundy , which included "Vermont beef, crimini mushroom, a red wine demi-glace, and herb sauteed carrots" ($16). Another entree ordered was the Braised Duck Leg, which included sweet potato hash, roasted leek, and vanilla jus" ($19). My other friend had an order of the P.E.I. Mussels (cooked with black garlic and ginger beer, served with a toasted baguette; $10) and a side salad, which was a larger portion than our normal "side" salads. We were all satisfied with our entrees. I wasn't expecting a "stew" for my entree, but the flavors were still very good. The service was great, and so were our cocktails. Daily Planet is a cute restaurant for a date or night with the girls.

I went to Daily Planet with a group of people for a friend's birthday. We went at 5p when they opened and were seated immediately. There weren't many other customers in the restaurant throughout our meal, but the service was abysmal. The meal took almost two hours and our waitress was not attentive at all. I don't need someone hovering around me, but it would have been nice if the meal progressed. Even though the service was terrible, the food itself was actually pretty good. I started with Maura's Salad - a simple green salad with grapes and toasted pecans tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette. I asked for it without bleu cheese and it was delicious. For my meal I ordered the PEI Mussels - these were cooked to order in a delicious broth that was sweet and was perfect for the baguette that was served on the side. My boyfriend ordered the chicken pita which was pretty good. The chicken pita came with fries and they were delicious - I recommend the fries!

I just keep thinking about how rotten my experience was here the last two times. So, I have to say this.... -The bar area is great and has an amazing atmosphere. -If you have to sit in the back part, leave. -Even if you sit in the bar...don't expect great food. All in all, my thought is this place is in the middle of an identity crisis. The front is so funky and cool...the bad nothing to talk about.

The Daily Planet is usually an extraordinary gourmet ( but not mini portion sized) American fusion restaurant. However, the reason why I say "usually" is because the menu changes often; and while I appreciate restaurants that take risks, sometimes this is alienating, since incredible entrees and appetizers will not always appear on the menu. However, when certain items-such as their Beef Bourguignon with squid ( which made me quit being a Vegetarian after about four months), their Risotto with crab meat, and the Sorrentan Italian spiced sausage and pasta entree complete with large shaved chunks of parmigiana cheese that gradually melted as it ate it, are all foods for the Gods and Goddesses. I also loved their salads made with aioli and goat's milk cheese, their reliance on locally grown and raised products, the wine menu, the local art work on the walls, the Bebop jazz on the sound system, and the super friendly and knowledgeable waitstaff.

I was with a friend's parents from North Carolina and all they could talk about was how much they wanted to go to Daily Planet and how everyone they talked to was recommending it to them...I'd never even considered eating here, but I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Ginger Tofu Stir-Fry and was disappointed that the tofu was fried, but the peanut sauce was tasty and the basmati rice was done perfectly. There was a mix of different veggies (broccoli, cabbage, carrots etc...) in the stir fry. It was tasty, but I wouldn't need to order it again. 2 of the other members of my party had the chicken and dumplings and the other 2 had the beef burgundy...nothing got rave reviews but all it all it was a nice experience. Definitely not "the place" to eat in Burlington in my opinion, but tasty nonetheless.

Came here for cocktails and apps and enjoyed it. Great signature cocktails at fairly reasonable prices. We had the nachos and the calamari (yummy dipping sauce) and were not disappointed.

I stopped in to have dinner with my host while visiting the area. She had a craving for pulled pork, which was on the menu and she had had a positive experience there before. We were both disappointed. She ordered big john's supper, which is barbecue braised pork, johnny cakes, apple sauce. The pulled pork was too salty to eat more than a small amount and the johnny cakes were very dry. I had the Caesar Salad (I think it was the special that night) and it was flavorless. The shrimp added to it were cooked well and well-seasoned but outside of this, the salad itself tasted as if it didn't have any dressing... except that I could see it. We ordered onion rings that were cooked perfectly and could almost be a meal by themselves; we both enjoyed every bite of them. The bread we were started with was also tasty. Dessert was skipped to go elsewhere. Our server adds a star to this review because it was a busy night and he was friendly and attentive.

Co-written by four folks who are all minor league foodies, two locals, two from San francisco. Overall better than average for burlington. Appetizers: Fried assoago cheese... Winner. Mussels... Fight for the broth, worth the effort. Entrees: Pork belly with lobster gnochi- really rich, gnochi makes it, hold the onions next time Rock shrimp pasta, delectable, corn nuts are best addition Arctic char- risotto was better than the fish Chicken Caesar- very uniquely good dressing Wine: both bottles were great, wonderful help selecting from the list. Highly attentive and enthusiastic servers (Meghan and Lindsey), it's easy to see she really knew and enjoyed the food and wine she described. "contraption" friendly restaurant that still love local farmers and foods.

I have a long history with t.D.P. .....I actually really enjoy it here, the food isn't too bad, and the cocktails are strong as hell. I enjoy the restaurant as a whole, however, it's not a place that I personally could stay and hang out at all night. It's an eeensy bit tacky...a place for hipsters to kind of congregate, not exactly my scene, but it sure as hell beats a lot of the other college bars in Burlington. On that note, definitely drop by for a drink at the start or at the end of your night... the bar staff is generally friendly, the martinis are strong, and the ambiance is chill albeit the strange crowd.

HORRIBLE SERVICE, FOOD WAS BARELY ENJOYABLE, and not at all what I hoped for. We ate on the bar side. I ordered nachos, how hard can it be to make bad nachos? Usually this can not happen with nachos but it did. The salad my friend ordered was so overdressed there was a pool at the bottom. I'm not sure what happened the other night, but I will not be back anytime soon!

I'm really surprised by all the low scores for Daily Planet...this is totally where the locals eat in Burlington & the crowd & atmosphere are just so mellow I dont know how you couldn't love it. The menu we sampled was really tasty...bison steak, tuna, fabulous coconut carrot cake...and really reasonably priced Four Vines red zin...whats not to love?! The bar here is great too...a wonderful place to grab a drink & catch up...they were playing the beastie boys double album which rocked...and the bartender was SO friendly. Everytime we're in town we go here at least twice...

I am sad that I don't love the restaurant, the bar is fantastic. When Tikki Barber was in town, I took him and the NBC crew here for drinks. The restraurant is a earthy-hip-30's and 40-somethings place. I love the menu selection. Why I give this restaurant low marks is because they skimp on portions making it very pricey for what you are served. Again, love the artsy comfortable bar area.

Although I graduated from UVM over 5 years ago, I still dream about the "Maura's fabulous salad" which I would double in size (not because I am a bottomless pit but because the appetizer version is small and I like it for my meal) and add grilled chicken. I have a lot of great memories here, and hope to come back soon and write another review!

Really not feeling this place. The overpriced entrees seemed to be a hodgepodge of world cuisine with a lot of ingredients that don't really taste like anything in particular (sort of like a World Music CD of no particular national origin but you're pretty sure it's not Springsteen). The staff was inattentive and pissy. Not the worst place in the world but I'd skip it.

Daily Planet is pretty scrumptious. I don't know if I'd ever eat there again, as I went ALL OUT for supper the time that I went. I mean cheese board, bread basket, a pot of chai tea and a big ol' swordfish filet poached in tomato butter atop seasonal VT veggies. My boyfriend got their Angus burger with Cabot clothbound cheddar and sauteed morel mushrooms. Their french fries are to die for, and their cheese selection was very pleasing. Freakin' OUTRAGEOUS prices for the cheeses, $4 for a wedge about the size of your thumb. Can't say I enjoyed that, but the waitstaff was wonderful and super-pleasant, and the desserts (though I didn't order any) looked fabulous. Atmosphere gets 4 stars, comfy and beautiful. Lots of copper paint. Hard not to love.

My all time favorite place in America. No really, I swear. Great food with a menu that evolves on a regular basis. Wait staff that get to know you when you go regularly. Nice decor/environment, although I hang out in the bar area or outside weather permitting, and rarely go back into the restaurant proper...although the atrium (is that the right word?) is perfect for a cold sunny day. It's like my cheers and I hang out there almost daily when I am back in Burlington.

A colleague and I were up in Burlington for business. The concierge at our hotel recommended the Daily Planet for dinner. We arrived around 8pm on a Wednesday and it was pretty hopping yet we were promptly seated. The started the meal off right for me. If you are a person who enjoys a quality cocktail, the Daily Planet has a pretty good selection of unique drinks. I wanted something refreshing since we had just completed a 6hr drive and got their adapted version of a Pimm's Cup (who's name slips my mind). It was pretty good, a little too light for my tastes so the next time I will ask for the gin included. Dinner between my colleague and I consisted of two apps and two entrees: Nitty Gritty Corn Crusted Calamari, Steamed P.E.I. mussels, Garganelli and Rock Shrimp, and Braised Blackberry Rock Lamb Shoulder. The top choice: the calamari. There is nothing better than crunchy seafood. The mussels were soft but a little flat on taste. The Garganelli and Rock Shrimp is a very creamy dish so be prepared to order light if you are going for this dish. The Lamb was very tastey little gaminess to the meat. The service is fast and helpful. They are always coming around the table, making sure everything with your meal is going exactly as you planned. The atmosphere is comfortable and warm. In conclusion, I would come here again, trying new drinks, new apps, and new entrees. Grade: B+

One of my favorite places to hang in Burlington. Great food, good prices, great bar scene, cool music, and off the beaten track from the tourists trolling Church Street. One of the best burgers around, Dogfishhead 90 on tap, and they can mix a good drink. New chef is supposed to be very good, and hopefully that awesome bartender Amanda still works there.

Excellent food. Their appetizers are great; I recommend a tapas-style meal (but the plates are too big for more than a few on the table at a time.) Great cheese board selections. Like many VT hip spots, it's quite localvore. A bit pricey, but yummy. Not as many veggie options as there should be.

The funky urban vibe lives on in this local yokel bistro sporting a new menu but it's gonna take more than a new gold and silver paint job on the water pipes to get it to the next level. The smelt appetizers were excellent but the entrees lacked zip. At least try salt and pepper already. Announcing that home churned butter is available for a dollar extra was a little tacky and we said no thanks on just the principle.

I'm a little sad that for the four years I lived in Burlington, I never did get a chance to eat here. What I did do, was frequent the bar with a few friends. The atmosphere here is perfect for nights where you just want to sit, enjoy a strong drink and have a good conversation. Everyone seems to be in a great mood at The Daily Planet and it often leads to conversations springing up between different tables and friends being made. While I like Drink, Ake's, Green Room etc, Daily Planet was my fave place to just be. They also make the best Grateful Dead in Burlington, no lie.

We were here over President's Day weekend, and had the most wonderful meal! As a New Yorker, I thought it would be hard to find a good meal in Burlington, but boy was I wrong! The food was all excellent -- very flavorful and cooked to perfection. And the chef buys most of his meat and produce from local farms, which I always consider a plus. I would rather eat in this restaurant than many high-end places I've eaten at in NYC!

So surprised that this place didn't have a solid 4.5 star rating. Ate here with my bro while visiting Burlington. I got the red beans and rice with chorizo and shrimp, and he got the sweet and spicy curry with a half buttered chicken. Both meals were fantastic, flavors were unique, interesting... definitely I place I will look forward to going back to.

the chicken and dumplings are delicious and all of the ingredients are fresh and local. the waitress that we had was knowledgeable and informative and didn't rush us out on a very busy friday night. this is a great place, although a tad pricey. i recommend highly.

Definitely an over-rated experience. The restaurant offers reservations for one side of it's dining area with first-come first-serve for the other side (where the bar area is). On a good note, the cheese plate which offers locally made Vermont Cheese was excellent. The rest of the meal was mediocre at best. I had the beef tips which was more gravy that beef. Companion had the big john supper which consisted of fatty pork. Other companion had a burger which was the highlight of the food choices. limited wine selection. service was friendly but slow and our server looked to be fairly inexperienced. Seems like there are better choices for dinner in the Burlington area.

What happened to my FAVORITE restaurant?! I used to adore this place. Aside from the ambiance (which has remained), it's nothing like it was before! No more quality entrees under $14, no more quality drinks made consistently with a decent amount of liquor, no more charming waitstaff. The prices have been jacked up and the food quality comprimised. Daily Planet? I think I'll daily ban it. Go back to your roots, DP!
