Stopped in with wife and son while on vacation. Pulled pork sandwich was very good & honey mustard dipping sauce BEST I've ever had. Nachos good too! Good food, service, and value!!!

Great find on Church St in downtown Burlington. Go for the steak sandwich. Cooked to perfection. .

I stop in when I'm in the mood for taverny type food. No pretenses here. The fried food is as good as anywhere else. The beer is cold and they have some cocktail specials that look worth a shot. Elevated barstool tables inside, TV's for sports, big windows for Church Street gawking. Locals go there. Let's see, what else... outdoor seating. I feel like a can dress like a sweaty grub and sit there while the beautiful wannabees preen and crane over at Luenigs, if you get my drift. I can relax there, which is waaaaay more important sometimes than balancing my acids with my savories.

We were on our way to Montreal and stopped here for lunch. They serve pub food...well done. We had a platter of tortilla chips with everything on it and I had a large tuna sandwich. It was good. My friends had the onion soup. They were happy. Overall..it was a good experience. We watched basketball on the big screens and just laid back. It was packed for a Friday afternoon but that was fun. Waiter was attentive and place was clean. I would go back again.

The Church Street Tavern isnt anything exciting. I ordered the portobello sandwich, which was basically a hamburger bun with a portobello mushroom with some cold slaw inside. Not much flavor to it. I also had a cup of clam chowder, which might have been the best I've had. (In FL we don't get great chowda!) Service was confusing. I was with a party of seven, so we needed to move two tables outside together to fit everyone. We asked beforehand and the hostess said we couldn't because whatever reason didn't make sense, pretty much just because we couldn't. We later ended up moving two tables together because it was once in a year that all my friends had a reunion together like this. Once the server saw that, she explained that the two tables will have two separate servers because they usually don't put together tables (even though I saw another two tables at the outside patio put together also) One server ended up serving the whole table. I just didn't like how they didn't try to accommodate us, or give us another option at our first request. OH well.

Nothin wrong with cheap beer and bar food. Not the most sophisticated place around, but plenty of tvs and beer!

Been here before. Usually decent. Had a burger that was supposed to be medium rare came out about 10 seconds short of Well done. Ordered coleslaw with it. Got cottage cheese. Sent it back and had it replaced with coleslaw. Coleslaw was clearly not made today, brown cabbage no flavor. Not so good. Fresh tomato slice on the floor. Not clean.

This is review is non food only bar and experience. Tuesday night in May after graduating weekend, my girlfriend and I were visiting and stopped in to Church Street Tavern to have a few drinks and I want to watch the Yankee game. Knowing that the owner is a Yankee fan and from being there previously earlier in the week that the game would be on. Getting there, the bartender Johnny was more than enthusiastic behind the bar. My girlfriend ordered a glass of wine and i was unsure of what I wanted to drink since I was full from a previous dinner. As I got to talking to Johnny he said how he wanted to run some specials in the near future, and one of them he suggested was Old Fashioned Tuesdays. After I heard that, I was sold. I happen to be a fan of old fashions and with his enthusiasm of wanting to make a classic cocktail was intriguing. The old fashion he made me was the best I ever had. He even topped it off by putting fire near the outside of the orange peel and rub it around the rim to give it more flavor. The first taste was delicious. I got to speaking to him about various things, including bar-tending and what he knows and enjoys making. He made the rest of my drinks that night with only me telling him the certain alcohol to base it on. Predominately I choose whiskey and he delivered a great drink each time. He even introduced my girlfriend onto the French 75 cocktail that included ingredients such as champagne, gin, lime juice and sugar. He did such an amazing job. We were joking with him and saying we were his Jersey Guinea Pigs. Among him making those amazing drinks and delivering excellent service to the us and the rest of the guests. He was very informational with breweries to visit or other bars to check out during our stay. He is the main reason (besides knowing the Yankees game will be one) that I will be a returning customer to that establishment when I am in the area again.

This is not the highlight of Church Street. It is basic. Basic beer menu (especially for Burlington) and a basic food menu. Don't come here looking for anything spectacular. If you want a cheap, light beer and watch a game on tv without being bothered this might be the spot for you.

I love this place. The boneless wings are so good. The onion rings are also great.

  • Paul H.

This place is an ode to mediocre pubs/sports bars. The beer isn't that cheap and the selection isn't that wide. The food is standard (not bad, just plain and expected) - lots of chicken sandwiches, burgers and the like. Lots of fried food because it's probably easier to make. The only thing this place has going in it's favor is the price (cheap) and the location, which makes it easy for people to stop by for a beer or a quick sandwich when they're passing time on Church Street.

  • Leah C.

neighborhood feel in the trendy part of town... great selection of beers and you are able to order 12 oz glasses so that you can sample more! the sweet potato fries were amazingly good and served with "real" honey mustard (not that bright yellow stuff). a "small" is plenty to share. the bartenders made us feel right at home - we were able to cheer on both our cubs and hawks :)

This is not a place to come to experience true Vermont cuisine, but it is fine if you want run of the mill food and average service. I got a tuna salad sandwich and salad that was ... fine. Just one of those meals that doesn't have anything wrong but nothing is remarkable, either. I'm sure if you live in Burlington and wanted a quick bite, this place is fine. I wouldn't come here if you are on vacation...there are better places to try.

May have been delicious if anyone bothered to come take our order....walked out after 20 minutes of waiting for someone to come to our table...

I have been dining here for almost 20 years, it was previously Queen City Tavern. I did not dine here tonight because after waiting the 20 minutes they still refused to seat us. I will never dine here again and will be telling all my friends about this experience. There were 5 open tables, the hostess refused to even look at us. People left and she still would not seat us. While other people were seated both inside and out while we stood there. There is no excuse for this. The food is not worth the wait, nor will I miss it. This place has gone down hill and is not worth your time. There are plenty of great places to eat in Burlington. Go some place else.

  • Kristi P.

This has never been a must go place for me. If you want to sit and watch a game and eat some decent bar food.. Well this place is nice. In addition, if your strolling Church street with your dog and need to have lunch, you can sit outside and have lunch or dinner right on the main drag. This is also great for people watching. Again, it's bar food, so don't expect too much here. Like the soups though!

  • M S.

Great place, good food, & Dave Logan, the bartender is amazing! My family and I have been coming here for years! Have never had a bad meal or bad service! My only issue is that recently it has gotten a little pricey for the offerings. We will not stop coming here, we will just have to do it less frequently!

I never understood why some people make such a big deal about CST. It's really nothing special. Standard pub fare; lackluster atmosphere; average crowd. The only thing 'the tavern has going for it is its location. Who cares... there are plenty of more inspired options on Church Street.

    (3)
  • Mark X.

cheap and good bar food. i like the nachos. average beer list.

    (3)
  • Diana C.

I stopped in here for a beer and thought it was alright. Nothing particularly special about it for me. I couldn't quite tell what the vibe was supposed to be. It had very simple furniture and a standard bar, maybe some sports playing on a few tvs? Not all that memorable, but definitely not a bad bar experience.

  • Peter B.

What can I say. Looked like a nice place to settle in for a while. Sat outside and proceeded to be ignored by the waitress for an eternity. Finally one of them deemed us worthy of her time but we ended up leaving.

    (1)
  • Will T.

Food is okay. The outdoor seating is spectacular--on most days you get a free Church Street show--if you're visiting the area, the "show" I speak of is probably not what you're thinking, but none-the-less entertaining.

This place had red flags from the start and we should have turned around and walked back out. The hostess was lacking any kind of personality and looked like she wanted to be any other place other than there. This was rather early on a Friday evening roughly a week and a half ago and the establishment had a full bar but many tables open. We were directed to our seats and decided to split a burger and some sweet potato fries. The beer we chose was a special and it was terrible (Otter Creek Autumn or something). I took a sip, my wife took a sip and we asked the waitress for a suggestion for something else and she went with our old standby, Switchback. The problem was that even though not much of the pint was consumed, we were billed for it. We split the burger and some of the fries that were obviously FROZEN and deep fried, not fresh. About two to three hours later, my wife and I had strong stomach pains. I have eaten in many a greasy spoon in New Jersey and N.Y. and these stomach pains have never been present. Our waitress was nice enough but it did not warrant much of a tip, this place is not very good at all. (I am trying to be nice.)

Good burgers and Philly especially with hand cut fries, regular or sweet potato. Decent menu options all around. Good staple pub food. Best chicken wings in town though. Go buffalo wings, order them saucy and toss them down guiness or magic hat on tap. Then do it again.

  • J B.

we came here b/c we were starving and just wanted something quick .... we did not expect the food to be as horrible as it was. the salsa is supposedly 'home made' according to the waitress (who was pretty attitudey) but it was definitely made w/ canned tomatoes and had no flavor other than that of canned tomatoes. Quality service and food were severely lacking and we left pretty discontent.

This was, by far, one of my most favorite places to eat in Burlington. Even before we could drink (legally...) we would go here on Friday or Saturday nights just to eat and hang out. Their burgers are my favorite. Actually, I can't remember ordering anything else here because I liked them so much! It gets loud in here, especially during a sporting event, but its fun! And it got even more fun after we turned 21...

Best wings in town; hands-down. The Tavern Ale is great. Not worth the long wait for a table on the weekends, however.

Came here to watch the US Open finals, and was surprised how empty it was! Considering it was both a big US Open game, plus the Giants season opener. The US Open wasn't on any of the TVs, but the staff was great and accommodating to our group about changing the channels. I didn't have any food, so this review is solely based on service, which was great. Drink prices are very reasonable, although the selection is just okay.

Just eat here. Great prices great pub food and very quick friendly staff. Also they have a lot of beer!

  • Peter A.

When it comes to enjoying a few cold beers and decent pub food, this is the best casual option on Church Street. It is a really good spot for a group to meet up after work. or to watch a game. Beer and drink selection is solid and the menu has enough flair to keep returning patrons interested in trying different apps and meals. The burgers are always a sound choice here as well as the sweet potato fries (best around in my opinion). Salads are good too. Enjoyed the Greek Salad with grilled chicken during my last visit.

    (4)
  • Patrick C.

Food was ok, service was friendly and quick. There are a ton of four star places in the same street as this. Overall if you are looking for pub food and beer it's ok.

  • Kenny H.

$1 Oysters on Tuesdays. The game is always on or they'll turn it on for you. Buck the bartender is one of the best I've ever met. Good beer list. Standard pub menu. Outdoor seating too.

  • Zachary H.

Friendly well-located bar! I'm surprised by the low ratings on Yelp! I tried a nice assortment of Vermont beer and cider here on my first night in Burlington. I found the bartender to be friendly and knowledgable and had an overall good experience. Perhaps my only complaint was that the "spicy" chicken wings were anything but spicy. That said, they tasted fine and I would likely order them again.

Church Street Tavern is great if you see it for what it is. I go here for a good time with friends, quick seating, and inexpensive comfort food and drink. Yeah, the food isn't anything to write home about, but there's just something special about sipping on some brews and being able to order two hot dogs and chips for $4 that gives this cozy establishment a special place in my heart.

  • Kurt K.

Decided to pop in for a bite while shopping on Church. Wasn't to crowded, there was no one at the hostess stand so asked a server if we just grab one of the several open bar tables. She pretty much just snapped at us and kept walking. When the hostess did come back she was super rude as well. The whole front area just seemed disorganized. We turned around and left.

  • Erin W.

This is a pretty standard pub/tavern. It's not the cleanest place (though I only used the bathroom once and it was spectacularly clean), but it's far from dirty. It's not a dive bar by any means. The food is over salted, greasy and your standard pub fare. I don't really care to eat here, but if I'm out with friends and they want to eat here, we'll find something to eat. The beer selection is pretty decent. Mixed drinks are good, and pretty strong for the price. I just feel like I could never be excited about going here, but I don't really have anything bad to say about it either.

  • Jessica W.

Had a terrible experience here. Showed up with 2 people. Wanted to eat. Waited for a table in the bar area (we wanted to watch college football). Friends text and said they would stop by after we already had our food. Mentioned to the waitress that we would be adding 3 if that was ok. She said it wasn't. You can't add a chair to this 4 top. Although there were empty chairs all around and this was the bar area. Our friends showed up we had to take shifts at the table and then at the bar. If it wasn't raining we would have left sooner. I also watched the hostess turn away 6 other sets of people because she wouldn't do a little rearranging. What a loss of money for this place. Bad business in my opinion and I won't be returning. Have some flexibility and maybe have the hostess be a little more pleasant.

    (1)
  • Billy T.

Terrible. Over hour long wait to get seated. Over 30 minutes to get our order in and over 30 minutes to get our food. The fries were soggy and the burger overcooked. And to add injury to insult, the place is overpriced for basically pub food. Never coming back

  • David Z.

Watched the US-Portugal game here. Ordered appetizers and beers with my girlfriend and 3 older businessmen from Ireland who asked to sit at our table. The house beer, Church St Ale was very good and I kept ordering those. The wings and mushroom garlic balls were fantastic. But DO NOT ORDER THE NACHOS. They were soggy and gross and tasted like they used Ellios pizza sauce instead of salsa. However, it was a fun place to watch the game.

  • Sarah V.

We stopped in for dinner and drinks and were seated right away even though it was very busy, which was nice. Our waitress was very nice and the service was great. They have a decent beer selection. If we were only there for drinks and appetizers I would give 4 stars. We both ordered sandwiches in baguettes with bacon. There was no bacon, but they were just out-not their fault. However, the 'baguettes' were actually just squishy hot dog buns. The sandwiches were what I would make at home for cheaper and not great but not terrible. I would go again and try a burger instead.

This restaurant doesn't belong on Church Street; it belongs on a New Jersey highway. The menu is generic, which is perfect if you have a Plain Jane palate. There was nothing really indigenous of Vermont on the menu. Waitresses weren't Bohemian hippies...lol! They were blondes who look like they were UVM sorority sisters because they looked and talked alike. I had to ask the hostess for a table after waiting five minutes. Out of the whole menu, I had a chicken Caesar salad. The most "exciting" dish was their fish and chips, but they were out of them.

  • Jason M.

Good solid place in Downtown Burlington for some pub food and beer. I think price is the best selling point here, as they offer a good bar/restaurant experience for much cheaper than their neighbors. Our party of three had a total of one appetizer, three meals, and four beers. The total including tip came to $58. Very reasonable considering all the beer I drank ($2.50 Bud drafts on Fridays!) and the abhorrent 9% VT sales tax rate. Overall, the food isn't legendary, but I had a really nice sandwich. The Northern Griller (or something to that effect) is chicken-apple sausage with peppers, onions, and cheese on a grinder roll. Really tasty. My girlfriend's salad was good, and the mozzarella sticks were clearly from a frozen bag. So, some ups and downs for this place, but mostly ups. Give them a try if all the overpriced derivative "fusion" places are full.

Incredible fries and amazing spinach salad with cranberries and red vinegrette! Lovely to sit outside for lunch, too.

I was stoked I could get some Heady Topper here!! After dreaming for the top rated beer in the world (according to BeerAdvocate), I finally got mine. We came here because the other restaurant we wanted to eat at had a 35 minutes wait. We were seated immediately, and inside too, which was unexpected on a Sunday afternoon on Church Street during the Festival of Fools. Their onion rings were very tasty but a bit overpriced which this place can get away with because of their location. They have huge windows to look out on all the people walking on Church Street from out of the direct heat. The wait for all the burgers came after most of us finished out drinks. Their french fries were very good. Next time I'd like to try their house beer. After that whole time, we still finished at the same time as the group that decided to wait for the first restaurant even though they were seated twenty minutes after we ordered our food.

  • Jamie H.

I would say this is a very standard, average place. I was surprised to find it on Church street, honestly. It was rather blah inside - I love me a good dive bar, but this wasn't it it was just mediocre. The food and service were both fine, nothing exceptional. I'd say the only thing they really have going for them is the location...too bad they didn't try a little harder!

  • Kasey H.

Loud atmosphere not to crazy for a Saturday night. Our server was unattentive. I ordered a chicken wrap w lettuce tomatoes onions cheese and ranch. I received a wrap with lettuce and guacamole. Luckily I was starving and don't mind guacamole. More than halfway through the meal the server checked in and I told her it wasn't what I ordered. Her response "I wish I had served it to you". At this point my experience could be reconciled with a discounted meal or a free beer. But the bill came full price. Highly disappointed :(

  • Heidi M.

Love this place! I went on a weeknight and there was a nice spot near the front window. Had the mozzarella sticks with marinara, which was well-cooked (crispy outside, gooey -- but not molten -- cheesy center) and the sauce was right on par. The waitress was prompt and polite; while also hustling around to take care of the rest of her section. Great service. For dinner I ordered the tavern burger, cooked medium, with the coleslaw and a side of sweet potato fries. The burger was simple and perfectly executed (good temp, juicy, well-seasoned). The slaw was surprisingly flavorful and wasn't bogged down by dressing -- delicious! And the sweet potato fries were amazing. Perfectly fried, sweet and salty goodness. Will definitely be coming back to try the pulled pork, waffle fries, black-and-tans, and variety of Irish coffee-type beverages. Nice pub.

good place to grab a couple. nothing that is really special, but sometimes that's a good thing. especially when the rest of church street is priced for tourists. chicken wings were good.

While this restaurant/bar may be charming, it lacks basic functions and facilities. The outdoor dining experience during the summer is lovely, yet there are at least 10-15 other restaurants on the street with a similar set-up. Upon our arrival, it took 3-4 minutes before we saw any hostess and received our seating. We began with chips and salsa. However, the salsa tasted more like a pulpy marinara sauce than it did salsa. The chicken sandwich was good and the waffle fries were delicious. The biggest problem that this restaurant has though is it's bathroom. The men's room lacks any privacy that makes you question if you're in a rural third world country or the US. The one stall in the room features swinging doors without ANY locks! There is also a 2 inch gap between the two doors. I have NEVER come across a bathroom with similar bathroom facilities. When I went out to ask if there was any sort of lock for the men's bathroom, the waitress had no idea, and the consensus between the bartender and several of the patrons was that there was no lock for the men's bathroom. Overall, this is a quaint bar that attracts several locals and features a quick lunch or take out. But, if you're looking for a great restaurant to dine at while visiting town, I would strongly discourage you from choosing the Church St Tavern.

  • Tim K.

There are far better places to eat along the walkway here in Burlington. The nachos were so-so and the burgers pretty much just ok. The only real nice thing was to be able to sit outside in the summer... but then the problem is you get to see the other much better places you could have eaten.

My cousin and I came here after some of our preferred choices had very long waits on a Saturday night. The menu is generic bar food. It is not upscale or unique. It it very basic. We were able to get a table right away which was the big draw since we were hungry. They have a full bar and decent beer list, but even that is more generic than many of the other places. We were given menus and drink orders were taken right away but after that the service was lacking. It was busy but not overwhelming so it should't have taken long to take our food orders. We ordered buffalo chicken fingers as an appetizer. They took about 15 minutes to come out! Seriously!? We're talking about chicken fingers! through them in the fryer, cover them in sauce, put them on a plate, and get them to the table! They were pretty good though. They tasted fresh and the sauce had a nice kick. The entrees came out faster but were not as good. The chicken teriyaki philly I ordered had no discernible teriyaki flavor and didn't have enough onions and peppers. Basically it tasted like a seasoned bun. My cousin ordered a burger medium and it came out more well done. The fries, both sweet potato and waffle, were very good though. Since we had been drinking during the day we stuck with soda so dinner for the two of us with tax and tip was under $40. If you just want to find a place to have a few beers, watch a game, and get some appetizers, this place might be fine. If you are looking for a quality dinner you should look for an alternative.

The Church Street Tavern has a great location, and is a good place to share a drink with friends and watch the world walk by. The common bar fare can be found here, with a few menu items as a little departure from the norm. I ordered a spicy chicken wrap that had a very small portion of chicken, and the lion's share of the ingredients were pretty bland; not dissimilar to shredded cheese and iceberg lettuce pulled right out of your grocer's cooler. Waitron service was surprisingly slow concidering how slow the dining room was. If you are looking to have a drink with friends and do some people watching on a summer afternoon, this place is fine. If you are looking to feel satisfied with spending $10-12 on meal, you might be dissapointed.

Based on hospitality alone, this place is five stars all the way. We stopped in on a chilly day to warm up with a beer (great selection, BTW) and chatted with the owner, I'm assuming. He was so hospitable and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The only bad thing is we don't live closer so we can visit more often. Who knows, maybe one day...

CST serves decent food, and it's a nice escape from the uber-touristy places like Sweetwaters. It' s a blue-collar sort of sports pub-- my parents always insist that we eat here whenever they come to town. The food is nothing revolutionary, but I do love their burgers.

Dirty restaurant, lame menu and horrid food quality. Ate there this afternoon (warm beer, mushy nachos) and two of us incurred a bad stomach ache immediately afterward. The only plus was the friendly waitress - but awful, awful food.

Stopped in here for a post Brewers Festival meal. I enjoyed the outdoor seating although the service was rather slow and indifferent. They did get me burger and it was cooked correctly so I was happy. It was a good burger although not great. The selection was decent and the prices were average. Overall there are much better places on Church St and the surrounding area for a meal.

An old favorite with my favorite non live hockey experience. A few years ago while living in vermont there was a late spring snowstorm that dropped a couple feet on the ground. My problem was that I did not have a tv and I desperately to watch the red wings game. After plowing through the snow to church street I found this place as one of the few open for business. The only one working was the bartender, and he was willing to not only turn the game on for me, but also turn on the grill and make a simple lunch. The entire time I was there I was the only customer. I offered to leave so he could close up, but he told me that the bar will remain open customers or not so that people would have a place to go. I could not stop thinking of hemingway's "A clean Well Lighted Place". I had been many times before, and many times since and I have never been let down by the food, drinks, or service. Yet it will always be the memory of that day which will allow me to recommend this tavern as one of the best I have ever visited. Try the French dip!

Food good. Hostess tonight had zero personal skills and probably should not have been greeting people. Reasonable prices. Good server service. Dave Logan is great.
