Arrived at around 5:00 in the afternoon. Restaurant was busy but not overly crowded. Was disappointed to be seated in a dark back room near the kitchen entrance and the bathroom, but I'm one that likes the brightness and openness of a window in my vicinity. Service was prompt and friendly although there was a mix up causing a change in our waitress. The menu was vast with typical New England fare. Our meals were of moderate quality. Good but not the greatest. Pricing was a bit high I thought for what we were getting and in comparison to other similar restaurants I've been to. Overall I might eat there again if I was in the area but wouldn't make a special trip out of my way.

Horrible. The only good thing were our drinks. Service is extremely slow, which doesn't make sense because they had half the restaurant closed and not for a privet party. This is the fist time I had gone since the new owners, and the need to sell it back. The menue no longer works with the New England style. It is a mix of Americana and Mediterranean (?) That doesn't go together. I think if they want to go that way then redo the entire restaurant and make their own name. Our app was maple chili chicken wings with blue cheese. There was nothing maple or chili about then and they were extremely over cooked. They were so dry and chewy we could barely eat them. As for the blue cheese it was blue cheese salad dressing that tasted very watered down. My salad was drenched in so much dressing I couldn't eat it. My husband had the pulled pork. It was so dry and again no hint of maple. This is Vermont people maple is somthing you need to get right. He gave me a price to try and it was so sour tasting I told him not to eat it. I ordered a 5oz steak that was so small it could have fit the entire thing in mouth at once, and it came with a giant pile of mash potatoes that did not tast garlicky at all. Most of the other people there were 50 and over we were by far the youngest ones there. The waitress was nice and even made jokes about the owners watching them. We gave her a decent tip, not her fault the food sucks but we will never go back. tripadvisor.com/ShowUser…

I can't really comment on the quality of the food. My gf and I waited around twenty minutes and weren't seen by a waitress to even take our drink order. We also overheard the table next to us mention that they have been waiting over a half hour and hadn't yet received their appetizers or soup. The wait staff didn't appear to be too busy as they took the time to sing happy birthday to someone and take photos of a group, but then would subsequently walk away. We ended up leaving and driving a few minutes down the road to the Chelsea royal diner and had a great dinner there.

I wasn't expecting spectacular, just a good solid New England dinner. And beyond the salad, I do expect things to be cooked. Especially fish things coming from a place where sushi is not on the menu. What I got was a piece of mostly raw (RAW!) "broiled" cod and a watery baked potato that I think was pre-cooked a week before it hit my plate. My husband was treated to a prime rib swimming in some artificial beef flavored jus type of thing, and mashed potatoes that were similarly flavored. When the server removed my raw fish - after my husband had eaten his whole meal - we didn't see much of her before that - she offered me "something else". Well, if she'd asked me that before he'd downed his meal, I might have said yes, but after he's done? What's the point? Sit for another twenty minutes wondering who's spitting what in my food only to be presented with another piece of raw or strangely flavored something or other? I declined. Nothing was taken off of the bill in spite of the clearly RAW fish on my plate. I was too tired after a long day on the road to make a fuss, so here I am on Yelp, hoping against hope to spare another from a similar fate. Just head to Whetstone Brewery or the Royal Diner. Save yourself.

The food was good but not great. I will eat there again when friends wish to go, but not on my top list of places to eat I am afraid. The mashed potatoes were the best part of my meal.

My friend, who is queen of discounts, had some sort of coupon for the New England House, so she talked me into going with her by promising me a gorgeous outdoor setting. Okay, so they have a deck. And despite being visible from the highway, it's actually pretty nicely covered in plants and whatnot, so it's attractive. And there ends the goodness. For me, at least. We had some wine (eh, ok) and scanned the menu (both of us are veggie and she's functionally vegan since she's also lactose intolerant). Yay, french fries. Don't get me wrong: fries are nice. Fries are nice once in a while and when you want them, though, not when that's the ONLY thing you can order. Well, I also had the "vampire chaser" appetizer, which had been talked up to me before. Woo-hoo, cheese toast. (One thing about this town, people have an amazing ability to be really excited and appreciative of something that's not so worthy. That's a nice quality to have - I just don't, myself.) So it's got a cute name, but at the end of the day, the dish is garlic cheese bread. Anyway, so basically we sat outside and had french fries. It just felt like a let down, since there are other places with nicer outdoor areas and much better food for us. And then there's the inside of the restaurant .... now, I do hear that there are fireplaces, which might be a nice thing in the winter. But, the decor is very dated and very stuffy. I feel like I remember more chintz than there probably is, but I think of chintz when I think of the inside of the restaurant. There's not, but I feel like there should be those dolls that cover extra toilet paper rolls in the bathroom. All in all, NEH seems like the ideal place to take your conservative grandparents for a nice steak. I'm sure it is ... but since I neither have conservative grandparents nor a desire for steak, I'm definitely skipping this place from now on, coupon or no. A much later note: my office mates and I ordered food. Mine was horribly, disgustingly inedible. I called to complain, was offered a replacement (no thanks!) and asked for my money back. And I was promised that would be taken care of right away. A month later, I still haven't been refunded. Calling Mastercard tomorrow ... Shady.

I've stopped here on several occasions over a course of years. Probably giving a 3 star is optimistic. But; it is an attractive place for a stop. It is warm (woodstove burning along) and a fun appearing bar where it is the patrons sit above a recessed floor serving area. Most recently, and I think the time before also, I had a half BLT with soup for a quick lunch. And it was quick! The B of the BLT was really good, the L and the T okay. The soup I got on my last visit was New England Clam Chowder, and seemed to be very high in potatoes, salt and thickener and very low in clam or seafood flavor. Not frightful, just not to my liking... so I simply did not finish it. High marks for being an appealing place easily accessed on Route 9 and those same marks for the people who work there pleasantly and efficiently.

Awsome dinner at New England house!! Awesome new specials escargot, fillet oscar , Turkish lamb. Deserts are to die for like the frangipani pear tart and cheesecake. The new wood floors in the remodel looks great as well.

Positives first - Cozy place to enjoy food. Good service. We went to the restaurant when the kitchen was about to close. The waitress warned us about that and took our orders quickly. They did not bother us even when it was a few minutes past the restaurant's closing time. We left when we suddenly found out that it was quieter than when we entered the restaurant. I really liked their "basil crusted garlic chicken" . The New England clam chowder was a big turn off though. It was salty and tasteless. I think the restaurant that boasts "New England" in their name should make sure they have a good chowder recipe.

What a great classic New England restaurant! From the beautifully maintained flowers and plants outside and on the deck to the fun collection of New England style items displayed throughout the restaurant and the great entrees like a variety of steaks and filets with amazingly delicious sauces and incredible roasted garlic potatoes...a winner all around! And I am in LOVE with the antique velvet upholstered chairs in the entry way! We will definitely go back to try the rest of their menu, the burgers at the next table looked great too!

This restaurant on VT-9 serves decent and inexpensive enough food, but is far from the rarified establishment it positions itself to be. Think of it as one step above Applebee's. The menu is standard fare - steak, salads, grilled this, stuffed that... A glass of Prosecco comes in a plastic-capped bottle. Go to the diner across VT-9 for a more authentic experience without the pretense.

We drove past thinking this will be an upscale expensive restaurant, but when we decided to check out the menu it wound up being much cheaper then expected. I think our burger & fries were 6.99 each. Its a large restaurant, steak, seafood etc. ($12 and up) we just happened to get burgers which were quite inexpensive!.. Delicious food, relaxing atmosphere and nice staff. We sat on the patio which was beautiful. Inside there was some live solo music near the bar area. It is located on route 9 across from the chelsea royal diner.

I was more than happy with this restaurant for lunch. The service was outstanding, friendly and like clockwork. The food was basic (think burgers and chicken and shrimp) solid (five people--no complaints) and more than reasonably priced. Desserts were also very nice. They also have a decent variety of craft brews on tap. The place is large, divided into a bar and a dining room, and the interior has that old time New England feel without hamming it up too much. I would definitely come back here if I am ever in Brattleboro again.
