I'd heard about this place two times before popping in for the first time. Recently moved back to town and am a writer so sometimes I need a place to write that isn't my house. This is usually when I have a less than exciting project going on... something that means laundry is more exciting, haha. Or organizing my closet. Or taking a nap. I drove over on Friday and was surprised at how large it is, and also just the overwhelming awesomeness. Definitely not the type of place Bennington has a lot of. With everything cool here going out of business it's nice that there is a place worth spending a few hours. Walking in there is a large counter area where two baristas (is that still the preferred term? I kind of hate it) were quickly serving up an assortment of baked goods, hot items and delicious looking coffees. I never heard any reticence to help with all the many gluten/dairy/soy requests which was cool and surprising considering how many there were. I mean, I wasn't working and I was starting to get annoyed. With a few tables outdoors and the decent amount in here I thought that was it. But nope, if you're facing the counter there is a whole large room off to the left. Here there are tables of various sizes plus an area with two leather chairs, a low coffee table and a couch. I staked my claim on one of the leather chairs and no one seemed to mind. At some point I was joined by a guy on the couch. Brown Cow has a varied crowd and also seems to morph throughout the day. In the later morning, when I arrived, it was pretty quiet with people reading the paper, me working, and a few small groups enjoying coffee and conversation. Around lunchtime it was BOOMING with what appeared to be a LOT of students (my guess is SVC) meeting up and grabbing a bite and a drink. It got loud (in a good way), before clearing out and quieting down. I've been looking for a place where I can sit and write in a clean space with good drinks and good music (the music is KILLER) and I think I've found it. Oh, and they have alcohol, to boot!

This place is a little hidden, but worth the find! My husband and I split an everything bagel and brown cow breakfast sandwich. We had a cranberry and pineapple mimosa. He had a coffee and I had a raspberry truffle mocha. We can't complain about anything, it's all wonderful. Don't miss out on this place when you are in town!

the food was very good, and definitely tasted very fresh, the many vegan options were an added bonus. however I couldn't give five stars as the woman behind the counter was a bit unfriendly.

It's all about context. This place is five stars for the area, and I've spent plenty of time around Bennington, but as I live other places with great coffee shops, it gets three stars from me. I was there early August and the area is bustling with weddings and college students. The service is very good. Nice folks who get your order out quickly. The food is less good. B's breakfast sandwich was pretty much like if you made a breakfast sandwich for yourself at home with whatever you have in the fridge. My bagel was just fine. Someone ordered a cookie that I overheard them saying was great. B had an espresso drink that was well done. The coffee was strange--I don't know if it was the brew or the bean, but it had a bizarre odor to it. You pump it yourself out of airpots on a side bar. Feh. That's not a place that cares a lot about its coffee, FYI. The place itself is OK--again feels like you're in someone's living room; but not in a good way. It's someone with hard IKEA furniture who needs new carpeting...ah, like a college student's house! That will be a fond memory for some! All in all, this is a good place to get a little food if you're in Bennington; it's really slim pickings around here. They use Mocha Joe's coffee from Brattleboro, and if you're up for driving an hour across route 9, you can go to that town for much better. As it stands, this is the best there is where it is.

My only real comparison for this place is to compare it to Elm Street Market (pretty much next door). This place is more of a restaurant/coffee shop where as Elm Street Market is a deli/grocery store. Both make good and creative sandwiches. This place has a few more options for breakfast and also a salad menu. I had the breakfast burrito with bacon added. I asked for the bacon to be crispy but it came not so crispy so I pulled it out. I hate under cooked bacon in a sandwich. The burrito was ok but here is where I think I would prefer Elm Street Market (ESM) to this place. If you ask ESM for something specific they do it. I bet they would have given me crispy bacon. I would have otherwise given them a 5 star. Iced coffee is very good. This place also sits a tons more people than ESM. ESM only has 2 small tables inside that can seat maybe 6 total. Their seating is mostly outside.

The food was good and came quickly; we ordered a plethora of different items and enjoyed all of them. I ordered the breakfast burrito, others ordered the bagel with lox and cream cheese, a salad, and a chicken Caesar wrap. All of it was good and decently priced. For dessert we hit the brown butter ginger cake, which was very delicious.

Wow! Just fabulous. First off the second I walked in I loved the ambiance, they were playing wonderful music; the Grateful Dead, Van Morrison etc. I received a free small coffee reward by checking in on yelp! It was delicious, fair trade and organic. I ordered the Ham and Brie which I would recommend to anyone and everyone! The dijon packed a punch which I love! My boyfriend got the breakfast burrito which was delicious as well but did not compare to how out of this world my sandwich was. If your thinking about stopping in do not hesitate!!!

I went here with my family after coming home from college. I was pleasantly surprised by the wide variety of specialty coffees and hot chocolates--I had the Mexican hot chocolate and man was it divine! My mom had a hearty turkey sandwich, dad had an avocado salad, and I had a quiche and salad. Everyone was happy and full and the pricing was perfect! I also go here for coffee meetings. The atmosphere is fun and comfortable which makes it perfect to meet up with friends or with future employers.

I love this place! There's lots of reasons I keep coming back: Great food - they emphasize healthy, high quality ingredients artfully prepared into tasty meals. Salads are delicious. Friendly service - all the staff are always very pleasant and helpful. Atmosphere - clean, quiet. Even when it's busy you still feel like it's an extension of your home. You can also sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.

'Just had a truly fab lunch here. Cobb salad with super-fresh white meat chicken, tasty, crisp bacon, half an avocado and hard boiled egg, chopped tomato ( they should use local tomatoes) and fresh, crisp romaine. I asked them to leave the blue cheese off, alas, because of my diet. The tarragon salad dressing was superb. I ate every bite. My friend had a curried chicken salad that looked delicious and he also cleaned his plate. The peach ginger iced tea was divine. Nothing can beat eating AL fresco on a beautiful afternoon Service has improved, and our lunch arrived at our table quickly. This place in #1 in my book for lunch.

Had their breakfast burrito and coffee. Outstanding offering with eggs. beans, avacodo and bacon. Good selection of serve yourself coffee with a free refill. Located next to the Paradise Inn on the upper end of Main Street. A little tough to find but well worth the effort...

Came here on a whim just trying to grab a quick breakfast before hiking the entire long trail. We were on our way to the trail head. We stopped and I not expecting a vegan option at all was suddenly surprised to have a bunch of options. The tempeh bacon is on point. With an option to make every item on the menu vegan, vegetarian or gluten free within reason is a treat. I was blown away. Great service and great attitudes from everyone!! Caroline helped me out and delivered great things!! Brown cow cafe is killing it and definitely doing something that isn't readily available everywhere. Thanks!!! I highly recommend it!!

Nice place! I thought about coming here a few times but since you can't see it from the road (to see what it looks like or if anyone is inside), I didn't want to take a chance. Glad I did! At the moment I'm a tea drinker and they had a good selection of Republic of Tea (but I like rooibos w/vanilla and they don't have anything like that--just saying). Bf liked his coffee and breakfast burrito and I liked my smoked salmon on whole wheat w/vegan margarine bc I'm off dairy. They do seem very accommodating for people with weird dietary requests. There are comfy couches and plenty of chairs/tables, and music that is unobtrusive for a pretty good ambience. Lastly, we thought it was a good deal! Our lunch was about $15 for all the stuff mentioned above (we might go back up to get more tea and try the soup).

Loved this little (not so little) place. Hard to find but worth it. Great cup of Americano and spinach salad. Warm, friendly service and full of locals. Love the mason jars and if you like Italian sodas or flavored syrups in your beverages they have about 50. Lots of food options for those with dietary restrictions. Would love this place in my neighborhood.

Best coffee in town-- great iced latte. If you're hungry stick with pastries as they mostly microwave the entrees; no grill the last time I went. Really attractive space; great for groups. Make sure to check their hours the day you go-- they close a lot and aren't open consistently on weekends. And drink early! They close at 3 pm.

This was a great find for a healthy lunch. It was easy to find and plenty of parking. Reasonably priced for a good sized wrap and chips. I got the Mediterranean wrap and my date got the club sandwich. He loved his sandwich and my wrap was great. My only complaint is that I expected more of a vegan and vegetarian focus since yelp classifies it as vegan. In any case there is something on the menu everyone will enjoy no matter what you like to eat (vegan, meat, gluten free, etc).

Very pleasant. Maybe because of where I'm from I can be more critical the locals. It's good, but to say 5 stars makes me think you've never ventured outside this town.

I ordered the daily special quiche (leek & something), with a salad. The quiche was ahhhmazing. The cheese that was in it was so melty (I think that really isn't a word, but IT WAS MELTY!) and the crust was unexpected in that it wasn't a typical pie crust but a softer, more puffy, much more delicious than a normal one. The salad had a nice mix of greens and veggies, with a deliciously tangy salad dressing. My beverage was a black iced tea, and just perfect- cold, decent amount of ice, tea was brewed strong but not too strong. For dessert I shared a orange cranberry scone and it was really soft and tasty. Overall a quality meal I can't find anything to complain about!

Best coffee and cafe in town! Highly recommend whether you're passing through or live nearby. We found it by accident on our way back to nyc. Love it!

The mountain cookies are awesome. I'm a little biased but the coffee is great and I think it's the only place in Bennington that you can get Mocha Joe's coffee. I go through Bennington a lot to get to family in Albany and the Brown Cow is right on the way, with easy and plentiful parking. If you need a cup or a snack, definitely stop by.
