I've only lived in Bennington for a month now but it is easy to see that the South Street is a center for the local art community. It's also a hangout for many of the college students in the area. All the food and pastries I've had have been delicious and their Italian sodas are great. The staff are wonderfully friendly. One of the staff remembered me even though I only came in once before. There are open jam sessions on Fridays nights and it's great to see the ever changing art on the walls. Definitely check this out if you're in Bennington for the day.

Small local cafe. Love the pastries, pie by the slice, quiche. Cozy atmosphere. Couches or tables to sit at. Wi-fi available. Local newspapers and games to entertain. During spring & summer small outdoor tables.

Great pastries, healthy lunch options, and delicious drinks. Nice place to read or bring your laptop. Lots of seating options: couches, tables, and small outdoor tables. Features works by local artists (rotates monthly, I think).

The espresso was excellent. Nice place to hang and chat, work, etc. Probably will never be back as my daughter is no longer at Bennington. But if you are a student or parent and need a real cup of coffee, go here. I didn't eat anything but the food looked good as well. Friendly staff and I dig the real china.

Usually like this place but just had the rudest guy take my order. He was short with me and didn't answer my questions. Customer service needs work.

Good prices, clean simple food, and a pleasant atmosphere. The carrot soup and homemade bread were excellent. Only complaint is that they run out of many options in the early afternoon.

  • Mica R.

Great stuff! Amazing service and even better product! They need to accept cards and book better shows

  • Briee D.

A nice community space but if you're a coffee snob it may not live up to your idea of a perfect cup. If you want to find a place to hang for a while that has good people behind the counter and supports the community-- head over and you won't be sorry.

Good coffee, love the morning glory bread (had to try making it at home it was so good!) nice people and laid back comfortable cafe :)

I absolutely love this place. I miss it while I am away at school in Keene, NH. I always recommend it to out-of-towners as a place to relax, grab a cup of joe, and a baked good, or even lunch! I love the sandwiches, namely the hummus and also the cheddar sandwiches. I LOVE the lemon squares from here- always been a favorite of mine. As for a beverage- any coffee or tea will surely not disappoint. Any italian soda will also quench your thirst. I am a sucker for iced chais, and this is one of my favorite spots! As for the atmosphere, it is nice, relaxing, friendly, and there is always some wonderful music being played. Often, there are small bands and open mic nights (tuesdays at 5) which draw a pretty big crowd. I would recommend this place to anyone I thought wouldn't be over-critical. $5 will get you a drink and a baked good. CASH ONLY!! Great place to hang. ENJOY!

My favorite place in Bennington for sure! I love the comfortable and casual vibe. I love the good coffee. The food tastes amazing. I love the music they play. I love how people working there are so nice. The bestest cafe you can go in Bennington.

I really wish I had a place like this near me.. Very cozy, comfortable place to have coffee, snacks, use free wifi and read the paper. I carry very little cash, and did not realize this was a cash only establishment. Luckily, I had just enough on me to pay for my cappuccino. The froth was perfect, almost heaping over the sides and looked like a giant cottonball inside the cup. You can smell the mildly bitter espresso, and each sip was smooth and leaving me to want another. Excellent stop to grab a coffee, cappuccino, latte and the pastry looked good as well.

Reasonable prices with rustic furnishings makes this a true coffee shop. The students on laptops helps modernize the venue. Go for the DIRML!

South Street Cafe is a cute little spot. My toddler and I like to sit on one of the two velvet couches for an afternoon date every now and again. I love the iced coffee and the very tasty chai lattes and she is a big fan of the peanut butter cookies. And they get bonus points from both of us for carrying Gammelgarden Creamery Skyr.

Great little cafe. I'm from Bennington and this is one of my go too places when I want a good latte and a place to work.

I think if I lived in Bennington, I'd probably hang out here for some coffee, read on the couch, etc. But... I don't live in Bennington. I dropped in to see a friend and we met here. I wasn't impressed that they are "cash only" and that the small town bank across the street takes large fees. The sandwich was middle-of-the-road. I ended up going to the Rattlesnake Cafe with a friend at a later date and much prefer that establishment!

I've always felt very fondly about this place. The atmosphere is calming, the staff is polite and helpful, and the coffee is some of the best in town. Great place to come to study, read a book, play chess, or hang out. They support local artists by hosting shows and their occasional live music is generally very pleasant.

Love the casual free wifi coffee drinking vibe. And the BEST bagels outside of NYC - really. For the naysayers dealing with snippy staff - I've never had that problem, and sorry you felt slighted! The owners are so sweet and the organic soups are amazing! Also check out their facebook page for cozy house concerts. facebook.com/pages/South…

As a recent transplant from the Boston area to Vermont, small, locally owned cafes like this one that are full of character and deliciousness make me just a little less likely to make the 3-hour drive back to old stomping grounds. Over several visits I've had a chance to try several varieties of soup, which are served with a slice of fresh bread for under $5. The baked goods also hold up well, particularly the cookies and brownies. The drinks here are all excellent, as to be expected. Coffee shops tend not to last long if the coffee isn't great. And because they don't always have iced coffee handy in the colder months, I've had the opportunity to try other beverages, such as the iced mocha and iced Americano, and have always left satisfied and not missing the iced coffee at all. I'll have to come back more often when it gets warm out again - it looks like they set up a few outdoor tables when it's nice out. The staff are attentive and quick to offer suggestions. Maybe it's because I'm a guy, but the female baristas tend to be friendlier than the male ones. There are downsides here, though nothing that will keep me from coming back. Their opposition to cell phones borders on the fanatical - while I'm glad they relegate conversations to outside the cafe, I've seen employees stop what they're doing to reprimand someone for the mere sight of such a device. In other words, it's "no soup for you!" until you finish listening to that voicemail outside.

I love these kinds of places! A neighborhood cafe where one can enjoy some good coffee and a yummy bite. The house coffee was great, a blend called "Alta Gracia", which is from a fair-trade farm in the Dominican Republic. And, the turnovers (raspberry & apple) were very nice. The place has a great laid-back feel, and the employees were very friendly. Unfortunately, it was not so easy to actually sit and enjoy my coffee. The space is actually quite large, but they only have a handful of tables. I think a few more tables could be added without making it feel crowded. And, while I love the "no cell phone" signs, it would be great if there could be one that asks all of those with laptops and long-empty cups & plates to please be considerate of those of us who are standing there waiting for a place to sit...

My first ever Yelp rating!! South Street Cafe is an Oasis after a long drive through New York. Super friendly staff and delicous coffee await along with Free WI Fi and oh yeah, great baked goods. A great place to stop, relax and read!

  • Neal G.

Great coffee and great owners. Tasty baked goods, too. Try the independent monkies if they've got 'em, and don't leave without a bowl of corn chowder! It's an ideal place to gather with friends. Or with the newspaper. Free wifi, so don't forget your laptop or other web-enabled device.

I've now eaten here twice, about 8 months apart and both experiences have been excellent. This place makes a great sandwich, has fantastic atmosphere, and just an overall positive experience.

  • K B.

This. Is. My. Favorite. Place. Possibly of all time. Whenever I'm in a different café or a mediocre chain, I always long for the South Street Café. The endearing chartruse couches, the boardgames, and the glorious iced chai complete the atmosphere. The art displays are also a draw and the best bakery item (if they still make it) is the morning bread! And unlike most coffee shops, they're open late! Alas, I am no longer local, but I shall always hold a special place in my heart for this café.

Fabulous tea. Real bagels (apparently brought in from NYC). Live music on Friday and Saturday nights. The feeling is that of the community's living room. Folks wander in, have coffee, play board games and use the Wifi. Great vibe, and a place to return to many times.

    (4)
  • PETE S.

Great espresso bar. I had a good latte with a delicious piece of blueberry pie. Very friendly staff. Apple pie the next night with different, but still very friendly staff.

    (5)
  • Milena M.

Not a friendly atmosphere for an out-of-towner. If you just want a wifi spot then I suppose it's ok. I wasn't impressed with my chai tea, it tasted watered down and processed. I think the woman asked us three times if we were ready to order when we were trying to look at the menu and decide. She was very preoccupied with loading the dishwasher. I actually felt a little uncomfortable and I was happy when we were able to leave.

    (1)
  • Kasey B.

Ok so we have the following at this less than fine establishment: 1) staff with a horrible attitude ("ANYONE ready to order yet?" excuse me for taking 2 seconds to decide what I want lady!) 2) watered down tea and coffee (this was $3.50?) and 3) A crowd of "regulars" playing connect four and looking like the awful coffee is the only thing keeping them going. Don't go here.

  • emen d.

This is SO my kind of place: a resurrected old space with tin ceiling, low-key, newspapers to read, good little things to eat that use up a five-dollar bill. I often run into my arts-community friends there and even when I don't, I find someone to meet. And even if THAT doesn't happen, I feel comfortable alone. The one downside that I've noticed over the years and still do under the new people, is the tendency of some of the help to be both snotty and ill-kempt to downright sloppy. If their attitude and appearance indicate cleanliness and care with food prep, this is not good. Whatcha see is too often whatcha get.
