Not sure why the overall Yelp ratings are so low, I absolutely love these cupcakes! I've been a happy customer since they opened up in Fairfax Corner. With such a large variety of delicious flavors, I can always count on Cupcakes Actually to fulfill my cupcake cravings. There isn't a flavor that I've tried that I haven't liked; they have cute seasonal flavors and designs as well. Red velvet is one of my favorites and a flavor I have to get every time I stop by. They also sell coffee/lattes that come in cup sleeves that say "cupcake snob"...how cute is that?! Highly recommended :)

Walking into Cupcakes Actually, I am automatically impressed. Its a small shop, but very quaint and cozy. There's a display case with all these delicate cupcakes with the display note cards so you know what's what. I went with the Vanilla Bean and Peach Cobbler, $3.50 a piece. They use a whipped icing so its airy and light. Personally, I prefer a slightly heavier icing. The cake part is perfect, not airy and falling apart. The vanilla bean had colorful sprinkles on top, that was fun. The peach cobbler had a fruit filling in the middle. I was not expecting that, so that was an unexpected surprise. Delicious. Polite. I'll return.

Got to try four of these cute little things since I received them for a present. The red velvet was amazing! Butter cream frosting also very good. One of them had a unique sort of frosting: there was hardened chocolate coating the cream frosting...caught me by surprise when I cut the cake in half.. in a good way! And walnuts as toppings..yum! I don't particularly have much of a sweet tooth, so sadly, some of the frosting did go to waste. The actual cake part was very good and fluffy. I wish I knew what all the flavors were of the ones I tried! I kept two cupcakes in the fridge after taking them home.. I think they are better at room temperature. I heard they are $3.50 each, a little pricy IMO, not good enough for me to go out of my way for them. Great as gifts though!

I've been meaning to check out Cupcakes Actually for quite some time now. Owned by Sue, this cupcakery also offers custom creations, wedding cakes, gelato, a selection of coffee beverages, and even treats for pups! I tried 6: the Flourless Chocolate (GF chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream and chocolate curls; tasted a bit too dark chocolatey for me, but the hubs enjoyed it); a Simply Red (red velvet cake with vanilla cream cheese buttercream and a red chocolate heart - this red velvet is definitely one of the best I've had! Very moist and not overly sweet!); Dipped Peanut Butter (chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream, dipped in ganache, and topped with a peanut topping; PB lovers will enjoy this, with its thin crisp chocolate exterior and a lovely peanut butter cream inside); a Golden Nugget (carrot cake with zucchini, pineapple, and raisins with cream cheese buttercream, topped with gold sugar crystals; this was definitely more like a zucchini bread in a cupcake form); the Peachy Keen Cobbler (peach cake infused with a cobbler filling, topped with a vanilla cinnamon buttercream and topped with an oatmeal crumble; this was another one of my favorites, as the peach cake and the filling was so yummy!); and, the Tiramisu. The 'frosting' reminded me of my favorite cupcakery out in Leesburg (Sweetz), where it was light and airy, buttercream-based, and not overly sweet. The cake themselves were very moist, which I appreciated! I can't wait to come back and try out their other flavors, like the Blueberry Lemon, Creamsicle, Going Bananas, Mango Margarita, Pumpkin Harvest, Peppermint Patty, Lemon Basil, Banana Split, and the PB & J (topped with a grape gummy bear!)! If you purchase a cupcake, you can get a scoop of their gelato for $1.50 - I tried their Salted Caramel, and it was just okay. There is free parking, but just note that this plaza is usually jam-packed! +Simply Red +Peachy Keen Cobbler +Dipped Peanut Butter +light and airy buttercream frosting :D +discount on a scoop of gelato when you purchase a cupcake +free parking

This place is one of the closest cupcakes stores near my house. It's quite good. Nice area. Friendly staff. Clean. Provide ice cream samples. I got the toasted coconut ice cream. My friend got the hazelnut Brownie ice cream sandwich and we shared a tiramisu cupcake. The toasted coconut is more creamy than coconuty. Not what I expected after eating more of it. The sammich was more on the dough. Although I just added more ice cream on it with my toasted coconut. The tiramisu cupcake was the best out of the three. Tiramisu flavoured cream and dough tasted like Graham crackers.

I stopped by yesterday because I recently started working for Vicinity, the Canadian version of Five Stars, whose loyalty program Cupcakes Actually uses. I bake a lot of cupcakes (from scratch, with real buttercream) and while I wouldn't say I'm picky since I will happily scarf down supermarket cupcakes with vegetable shortening icing, I am discerning. I had a chocolate dipped chocolate cupcake with vanilla buttercream and I loved every bite of it. The buttercream was fantastic. As another reviewer said, "The icing is odd. It's really light and tastes like butter." To me, that's not odd that's awesome. It reminds me of my favorite buttercream recipe on epicurious, which I tried because of the smattering of people who said it tasted too much like butter ( epicurious.com/recipes/f… ). I live in Toronto now, but when I'm home in Fairfax I would make a special trip for these.

What a sweet treat! I didn't personally visit the store but a friend surprised me with some delicious cupcakes from here for my birthday. I love the decorations on each cupcake. So creative. The buttercream is smooth, light, and not overly sweet. Love it! The cake itself was flavorful but not all that fluffy within. A bit on the heavier side. They even sell treats for your dog or cat. The cutest little cupcake was wrapped up for my yorkie Cho Cho. Incredibly thoughtful and sweet. He loved his treat and says "Thank You Aunty G for thinking of me :D Overall, I'm really glad I got a chance to try these cupcakes out. It was a wonderful surprise and I am so very grateful.

I can always find a cupcake store no matter where I go! It calls me when I'm not even looking for it.... There were a few cupcakes options today probably because it was the weekend and late in the evening. I like they have mini size cupcakes so you can leave room to try more. I got the Krispie chocolate cupcakes and vanilla cupcakes. The frosting on the vanilla was whip! I love whipped frosting way better than buttercreme. It wasn't too much nor was it too sweet just perfect balance. It has real vanilla beans mixed in the batter as you can see the evidence of the spec. The Krispie chocolate cupcake is a dark chocolate cake with Rice Krispie dipped in chocolate gnoche with a chocolate mouse center. So how was these little bundle of joy? DELICIOUS!!!

I've been here on a few occasions. They offer regular sized cupcakes as well as mini cupcakes. They also serve gelato and milk shots. The vanilla bean cupcake has been very dry both times I have ordered it. The first time I thought it was just that one time, but nope, drier the second time. The flourless chocolate cupcake is probably my favorite along with the red velvet. The peanut butter and chocolate cupcake is ok, the frosting is WAY too sweet. The staff I've encountered are not the most friendly. They look aggravated at you when your choosing your cupcakes. It's not like I know exactly what I want when I go I there and I'm sure nobody else knows either.

On Sunday, August 16, I went in and ordered 16 cupcakes as a back-to-school treat for my nieces and nephews. I am quite disappointed to say that the cupcakes were simply not up to par. I have previously ordered from Cupcakes Actually and the cupcakes were tasty and pleasant, but not the case for this special order. Not even the kids (ages 12-18) enjoyed them! The cupcakes were left on the counter. I was thoroughly let down, especially considering I paid $59 for the 16 cupcakes! Choose elsewhere if you want a delicious cupcake. If I remember correctly, the flavors were: Dipped Chocolate Salted Caramel (Sounds delicious, doesn't it? Nope, it wasn't.) Vanilla Bean Chocolate Fudge Flourless Chocolate Red Velvet Carrot Smores Mint

I have a gluten intollerence and have had the flourless cupcake many times today I got one and was sick immediately in the past I was impressed with the gf options but I'm not risking it again. Not sure if it was a bad batch or what.

After having a strong craving for Baked & Wired, but not enough time to drive to DC, I utilized Yelp for a quick fix. Cupcakes Actually popped up and was super convenient. Located in Fairfax Corner in between Chipotle and REI, Cupcakes Actually is a super tiny, but cute shop. There's only one high-top table available for "eat in" purposes, so be ready to take your goodies to go. The most efficient way to order here is "[number of cupcakes] to go". That way you don't have to go through all the back and forth with the super serious cupcake lady. During my visit I ordered 4 cupcakes to go. I picked the Samoa Delight, Italian Stallion, Razzmatazz and Dipped Choco Crunch (see picture). Samoa - I LOVE the girl scout cookies, so I have a preference for anything with this flavor. Not so much with this cupcake though. There was a weird tinny-like taste to it and I would have to assume it was an attempt at the coconut flavoring? After a bite, I handed the rest of the cupcake off to a drooling coworker. She enjoyed it at least. Italian Stallion - I waited to enjoy this cupcake later on in the evening. I put my hand in the cupcake box and as I lifted it out, the whole thing fell apart. Between an overly moist cake and a heavy filling... that's the way the cupcake crumbled! The few bits I was able to salvage were good, but I obviously couldn't enjoy much. Razzmatazz - Dank raspberry cake flavor, topped with a light raspberry buttercream frosting. Definitely my favorite out of them all, but that wasn't too hard. Dipped Choco Crunch - gave this one away. With each of these cupcakes costing $3.05-$3.75 each, it's not likely that I'll return to Cupcakes Actually. The cost is too high for a mediocre or less than pleasing cupcake. Especially when a $3.50 treat falls apart in my hands to never be enjoyed. I'd rather drive all the way out to DC and wait in line to get my cupcake fix - one that's sure to please.

This was the worst customer service experience I have had in years. I also purchased the groupon and arrived to find the ovens broken and no cupcakes except for six banana flavored left. I asked the lady behind the counter --- who was the owner-- and was very rudely informed that not only were the ovens broken but that they would not extend the groupon to the following weekend. I would have to come back on Monday. She then informed me that the cupcakes would freeze well. I came back on Monday and purchased the cupcakes- froze them for a party on Saturday. I removed them Saturday (again 4 days of freezing) and they had disolved. The icing was gone- the cake was dry. I have never experienced such a nasty response from the owner of an establishment. I will never return.

I ordered these for a retirement party & everyone loved them. The themed fondant decorations were nice, but they excel with the actual taste. The cupcake was dense (in a good way) and more like cake, & the frosting was whipped, light, and just the right amount of sweetness. I would get these again.

The cupcakes here are fresh and delicious! I love most cake, but I prefer a moist, light cake and these fit the bill. They even have gluten free options. The offerings change weekly and they post updated choices on their Facebook page. The owner is very friendly and open to flavor and offering suggestions from customers. I cannot recommend this place enough. They are by far my favorite cupcake place in the DC Metro (--and I've tried cupcakes from just about every cupcake shop in the area).

A friend of mine brought cupcakes from here to a bday party so she bought an assortment.. My favorites from here were probably the lemon and red velvet. The icing was a bit sweet but the cake was moist and delicious! I personally don't care to much for cupcakes but I do have a craving for them on occasion and this locations is close to my house so I'm a happy camper :) there are so many cupcake places opening up everywhere it's bad on my diet ;)

I don't care what the reviews say because Cupcakes Actually is actually pretty darn good. In fact, the frosting is actually quite tasty, fresh, and creamy. The actual cupcake itself is actually very moist. The red velvet is actually thier best cupcake I've ever had and it is always my go to. I actually never eat desserts often, but if I'm feeling adventurous, I know I can count on this place to fill my void. They also sell different sized cupcakes that range from the sizes of actual golf balls to softballs! The actual shop itself is small and cute, just like any cup cake place should be. If you aren't a big cupcake snob like me, then I would actually recommend coming here and maybe trying one of thier seasonal flavors and a small glass of milk. Maybe I'm just not in it, or maybe it's because I live so close, but this is my go to cupcake shop in the desperate times that my belly calls for one, actually.

Cupcakes are way expensive at $3.50 each! These are cupcakes people, not New York strip. Georgetown Cupcakes is less expensive and tastes better too, though of course their line is usually insane. In NoVA, the best is still Fluffy Thoughts in McLean.

I had the red velvet with cream cheese frosting and the raspberry as well. I was pleasantly pleased! They were not too heavy or oily (which I have had in the past yuck). They were light and moist with just enough frosting! Full of flavor and fresh! Red velvet is by fat my fave tho!

The vegan cupcakes are amazing! I tried the red velvet and chocolate fudge, the Red velvet vegan cupcake is truly delectable. It was a hot day and I walked around Fairfax corner for a bit, my icing melted slightly. eat the cupcake soon or keep out of the heat.

Saw this on the TV show Unique Sweets and just had to try it. I was a little concerned due to some negative reviews. Have no fear! My cupcakes were so magnificent I wanted to eat the packaging. The OMG was a moist, delicious bite of banana and chocolate perfection . The whipped, creamy topping that was covered in chocolate ganache was light, yet oddly rich and decadent. I'm kind of glad this place is not closer to me. It would be really bad for my wardrobe !

  • Rebecca M.

YUM! I adore this place and their Flourless Chocolate Cupcakes (both mini and full size). Luckily, they don't mess around with a good thing by adding some non-gluten flour (rice flour, yuck). They stick to a classic chocolate and egg recipe which creates a very moist cupcake with a texture similar to the outside of a molten lava cake. Since I am anti-fondant icing and not a huge fan of ganache either, I enjoy the light and airy buttercream style frosting which they use for all of their cupcakes with the exception of the Actually Dipped Peanut Butter and Actually Dipped Chocolate. I am surprised by the negative reviews which talk about dry cupcake bodies and too-small portions. Perhaps in our super sized world, we have forgotten that cupcakes were not always the size of an infant's head and that they were seen as a treat for after a meal not as a meal themselves. These are not ginormous, Crumb-sized monstrosities. They are a reasonable and delicious few bites. Maybe you can think of Cupcakes Actually as the anti-cupcake lovers cupcake place. They aren't punch-you-in-the-face sweet or gain-two-pounds sized. Enjoy them without worrying about a diabetic coma.

Despite the reviews, I had to try these out for myself... and was disappointed... at all the bad reviews this place got! Granted, I only tried two cupcakes, both of which were chocolate, so I don't know if that makes a difference. I ventured for Death by Chocolate and "Some Like it Hot." Cute little spicy cupcake with jalapeno infused cherries as the center. I was pleased with both the cake and the frosting. I don't really understand the other reviews. The buttercream was not too sweet, but did not taste like butter. It was light and fluffy and complemented the cakes very well. It didn't leave that greasy feeling in the mouth, the way that some real botched buttercreams do, so I was pleased... and again, confused at all the mixed reviews. Anyway, if it's been awhile since you've been here, I suggest giving them another chance since the cakes were nice and moist (with a nice upper layer crust on the tops, reminiscent of the tops and edge pieces of a brownie) and the buttercreams were good!

My husband and I have purchased multiple (highly priced) cakes from here. The first was for our daughters third birthday which was amazing. My husband ordered a red velvet cake for my birthday which was like cardboard and $90+. We ordered our daughters eighth birthday cake in person in May, called today and were told they had no order on file. My husband then received an email from the manager stating that they needed payment information and they were completely unable to fill our order for her birthday party in TWO DAYS! When the order was placed we asked if payment info was needed and were told that it wasn't. IF THEY NEED A DEPOSIT THEN IT SHOULD BE EXPLAINED MONTHS BEFORE, WHEN WE ORDERED, NOT TWO DAYS BEFORE HER PARTY WHEN WE CALLED THEM TO CONFIRM!!!! Will never use them again!!!!!!!!!!

The decoration of this little shop is very beautiful. The young lady that helped me today was very friendly and helpful and those were the reason why I gave them 2 stars. We got 10 cupcakes total in 6 flavors today: lemon curd, neopolitan, red velvet, flourless chocolate, German chocolate, rum banana. My sister and I shared the cupcakes since we wanted to try out different flavor. We threw away the banana rum after one bite, it was way too sweet and just not good. The lemon curd fell apart after 2 small bites. The cake was very dry and could not hold up the heavy filling. Could not finish half of it. The neopolitan was alright. The frosting smelled delicious, like fresh strawberry. We gave the german chocolate away since we have a feeling we're not gonna enjoy it. My friend likes them though. T he only decent ones are the flourless chocolate and red velvet so if you have a sudden craving for cupcakes, grab them. We also try their gelato. We picked dulce Le leche and chocolate. Texture wise, the gelato was bad. It was very icy, not smooth . Flavor wise, the dulce Le leche was good while the chocolate one left much to be desire. It did not even taste like chocolate. Overall, I would not come back unless I have a really really bad cupcake craving. Of the $40 worth of goodies (I used Groupon, thank goodness!! I only wasted like $20), more than half was thrown away.

I got 24 mini cupcakes for my best friends birthday from here and they were great! I was a bit disappointed they didn't have all of the flavors they display on their website because they got me so excited and that's what made me choose this bakery, but I understand it's not practical to have all of the options all of the time. The minis are $2 each, but they tasted great and the ordering process was easy so well worth it. They also have gluten free and vegetarian options which is a nice.

  • Y G.

These cupcakes are delicious. The frosting is not overpowering and not too sweet, leaving a nice balance between the cake and the frosting. Great gourmet flavors as well. I am so glad they sell these on GMU campus now.

  • Saadiya R.

I wasn't impressed. I am a sucker for sweet things but these cupcakes were dry and small. Definitely not worth the price. Maybe it's cause I like the overly sugary type cupcakes and this place had moderately sugary ones. Another turn off was the staff member took a second to text/check her phone while there was a line of people which I find to be unprofessional. And lastly I think I tried the wrong flavors. I tried the chocolate ones which were very mediocre, and the black and white which was coated in chocolate ganache. It wasn't that impressive either. The textures and tastes didn't really mesh well with each other in my opinion.

I have gone to this location multiple times, and I have loved it every time. This most recent time, I had a voucher and the woman behind the counter was friendly and helpful. I got a variety of flavors and they are all delicious. The cupcakes keep very well in the refrigerator for a surprisingly long time (for baked goods). The management/owners are friendly and very focused on customer service from a recent interaction I had with them. The cupcakes are generally $3.75, which is pretty par for the course for cupcakes. I think it's also super cute that they sell milk shots for 25 cents, although I do prefer water when I'm having one of their decadent cupcakes. Definitely returning, and thinking of ordering some cupcakes for a party since they do such cute decorations.

If you read a negative review of Cupckaes Actually, I assure you that person had an anomalous experience. My wife and I have been here probably close to 100 times over the last 5 years and even ordered our wedding cake w/cupcakes from here back in 2011. As for the product (CUPCAKES) they're one of the very best in the DC area and we've tried several. I've only found one place that I'd say may be a tad better and that's in DC at The Sweet Lobby. But if you're in the N VA 'burbs and looking for an exceptional tasty treat, give this place a try. My wife and daughters all have their various favorite flavors, here are some of mine... Going Bananas OMG Pumpkin Harvest German Chocolate Chocolate Dipped Peanut Butter

  • Jennifer M.

$3.50 / cupcake. Best thing ever? They offer chocolate-dipped varieties. The Dipped Raspberry was actually very light, fresh, and refreshing. That's probably due to how they do the icing. It wasn't as sweet as I was expecting (good thing!). I didn't feel too guilty stuffing this in my mouth. Nommmmm.

A myriad of flavors. You would feel like a kid in the candy store. The young woman was nice and pleasant. The store was clean and there's sidewalk seating is available. My girlfriend is the real cupcake expert. So, we'll follow up on the review of the cupcakes.

I have been looking for a cupcake spot since I don't visit DC very often to get the best of the best which is Georgetown Cupcakes. Cupcakes Actually have a pretty nice selection of flavors. The cake is moist and light even when cold. The icing was a bit weird for me. It had butter cream flavor but the consistency and aftertaste was of whipped cream which I do not care for at all. It was so runny that it melted and ran down my fingers when giving my 7 month old a taste from my finger. I'm used to thick frosting. The chocolate fudge, flourless chocolate, simply red and Apple pie are all delicious with the exception of the icing thing above. I enjoyed the Salted Carmel, but the caramel was a little too salty and with the dipped topping and pretzels I felt it had a little too much going on, but still tasty. This place will do when DC Cupcakes (Georgetown Cupcakes) is not in the plans.

  • Sarah S.

The owner is a wonderful woman and the cupcakes are delicious!! Great flavors, not overly sweet, wonderful designs. Used regular and mini cupcakes in four flavors for our wedding and they were VERY well received by other kids and adults. I was asked just last week for Cupcakes Actually information because someone so enjoyed the cupcakes at our wedding. LOVE THEM!!

  • Jodi C.

Absolutely adorable shop! It's like a kitschy cupcake wonderland! Too bad the young lady working there had a nasty scowl and an attitude to boot. It was even noted when we left that people that work around cupcakes all day should be happy. A smile or a pleasantry wouldn't have killed her, nor would a "you're welcome" when I told her "thank you" at the end of the transaction. We ordered a flourless chocolate, a salted caramel, a vanilla bean, and a raspberry lemon. I LOVE salted caramel, but the filling in this was pure salt. Gross. The vanilla bean cake was quite yummy, but the icing was pure butter, it coated our mouths. The chocolate cake, I had to microwave for 10 seconds to get the wrapper off, but guess what that did... liquefied the icing, which was also pure butter. The raspberry one had no flavor at all. Four cupcakes for $16.17... if they were good, I would have NO problem paying for them, but the fact is they weren't good. In addition to the flat out unfriendly young lady at the counter, I won't make any effort to get out there again. Maybe if a group of friends talk me into going I'll give it another whirl!

And here I thought I loved just about all sweets . . . I hate to give this one star, really. The shop was clean, things were pretty, the prices were good, but the cupcakes made me sad. The icing is odd. It's really light and tastes like butter. It reminds me of the icing at Whole Foods, which I can't stand. I didn't even finish my vanilla bean cupcake. My fiance had a raspberry chocolate cupcake that was a bit better, but not much. I won't be back. Ever.

So disappointed! We've been here a lot and thought their cupcakes were good. Today we ordered one of the dipped cupcakes and it was so frozen that my daughter couldn't even bite into it. I took it back to the counter and they half-heartedly apologized, saying they had been really busy. I'm not sure why they think it was ok to serve a frozen cupcake since they had been busy but I really felt they should offered to exchange the cupcake. My daughter was not happy that she couldn't eat it and I left annoyed!

  • Fatima A.

Lovely staff but dismal cupcake. I asked for a plain vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting. The frosting didn't taste like chocolate - there just wasn't enough cocoa in it - and the vanilla cake was dry and sort of flavorless. I ordered two cupcakes, ate one super excitedly, and immediately wished I could get a refund on the calories. Stick to Red Velvet in Reston. Now that's a cupcake.

  • Amanda S.

There is nothing inherently wrong with these cupcakes, but there is also nothing inherently good about them. They're okay...they get the job done. In my opinion, the frosting is not spread evenly enough on the top of the cake. It's just kind of piled on in the center, which means you take a few bites with very little frosting, and then get a few bites with (I CANNOT believe I am saying this...) too much frosting. Also, both times I visited the staff was not particularly friendly or helpful. Like I said, they get the job done if you're in a rush, but there are other cupcakeries in the area that are much better.

  • Jenny S.

Cupcakes Actually is a decent bakery. The cupcakes are light and not overly sweet or heavy. I hate when cupcakes are so dense and the frosting is so thick that you cannot eat more than one without feeling sick. They still topple the cupcakes with too much frosting, but I guess every bakery seems to do it (except for Baked and Wired!) I stop by every now and then when I am at Fairfax corner and my sweet tooth is craving for a cupcake. I have always left satisfied. These are definitely not the best around, but are conveniently located nearby. The last time I stopped by, I redeemed a Specialicious coupon and purchased 4 cupcakes to take home: Red Velvet, Key Lime, Apple, and a Chocolate Chip Cookie. All the cupcakes were fluffy and had a subtle hint of sweetness in the frosting (especially the Key Lime one). The inside is nothing special, very small and clean with usually 1 or 2 people working. Prices are fair, but I would never drive out of my way for a cupcake here. They are good enough to satisfy your craving if you are in the neighborhood already, but not worth going out of your way for.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING - THE BEST CUPCAKES + THE BEST SERVICE!! I had the pleasure of working with Sue and her team to cater our wedding with 6 different flavors of cupcakes and a 2 tier wedding cake. i cannot rave enough about how fantastic everything turned out. from the seamless ordering process, prompt delivery and set up with no problems, beautiful display, and not to mention amazing taste, honestly we were completely blown away. The pricing is super competitive and sue worked with us to make sure we stayed within out budget while getting exactly what we wanted. We sent Sue a pic of the cake we wanted replicated and it turned out even better than the pic. Our wedding guests asked us all night where the cupcakes were from and the cake was gone within minutes of being cut. We would recommend Cupcakes Actually to any future bride or anyone planning a special event. I'd give them more than a 5 star rating if i could!!! THANK YOU SUE!

I have tried cupcakes from CA many times and overall they're really good. Not my absolute favorite, but very good. I love that they're local too :). They get 5 stars for being local and frequently being on Specialicious' $6 for $12 deal!

Finally, a cupcake actually enjoyed. A little 1/2" cupcake bite convinced me that there is cupcake gold behind these doors. I've tried just about all the non-chocolate cupcakes offered here (I'm not a big chocolate person) over 2-3 visits and have never found anything I liked (see previous review) and then I dropped by on Saturday. Running errands all day and having missed breakfast, I just needed a little bit of something to appease my growling stomach. That was when I spied the $1 orange/white chocolate dipped cupcake bites. I inquired what flavor of cake was inside and received "pumpkin" as a reply. I'm a fan of just about everything pumpkin flavor so $1.05 later I was headed for the door. Yeah that was short lived. Bit the thing in half, said OMG, whipped a 180, ordered up 2 pumpkin cupcakes to go and another bite to nosh right then. Still not a fan of CA's icing, but the pumpkin cupcakes are delicious and somehow the flavor of icing on them has just the right amount of sugar and works well with the moist cake. Glad I continued to give CA a try. But because I really don't like the rest of their offerings, an amazing pumpkin cupcake only brings them up to 3 stars.

I was at Fairfax Corner returning another item and I decided to stop by here. I walked in and saw everyone tending to their cupcakes and while they were busy I looked at the selection. The first thing I thought was all of that for this tiny [expletive] selection? It was hard to chose what I wanted because the selection was so bad. They have got to change that presentation style up for me to add any additional stars to this. I ended up getting 4 cupcakes for my husband, sister, and myself and looked in the box. I got the Red Velvet cupcake and while typical I thought it was pretty good. The Mint Chocolate Chip cupcake was alright. I'm looking at it like this: I'm paying 3 bucks for a limited selection of cupcakes from what I can see and the cupcakes rating from the crew was 'alright' and 'good' - yeah that won't work for me. I pay for GREAT and Amazing cupcakes. Looks like I'll be at B&W a little bit more which is fine - I don't mind paying for 'Amazing'

Used my $22 Groupon for the cupcakes and was a little disappointed that "$40-worth of cupcakes" is only a dozen cupcakes. I tried the vanilla and the flourless chocolate. The chocolates were amazing and the vanilla were good as well, but not as good as the chocolate in my opinion. My friends enjoyed the flourless chocolate as well although few tried the vanilla. I'm glad I used the groupon because I'd never pay $40 for only a dozen (although these are fairly large/sweet cupcakes).

This is one of the only cupcake boutiques in Fairfax but I was disappointed by the small selection. I bought 6 cupcakes for about 18 dollars. The icing on the cupcakes was not sweet at all and the cake was overly sweet. The cupcakes did not taste fresh. I would not go back here again, it is not worth the price.

Been here before and to the one in Leesburg and have not been impressed with either. Georgetown Cupcake is much better! I got two cupcakes from this store in Fairfax about 2 weeks ago with my boyfriend and we got the Vanilla Bean and the Chocolate Fudge one. He couldn't believe they were $3.50 each. The two ladies didnt seemed thrilled to be there and werent very friendly. Got home and opened the box to enjoy them when we realized mine (the Vanilla one) was about half the size of my boyfriend's chocolate one. I was not happy, I had just paid $3.50 for one regular sized cupcake and one that was half the size...I shouldve only paid $1.25 for that one! These cupcakes are way too over priced. My boyfriend absolutely hated the icing, said it was way too sugary and thick. My cupcake was dry, like itd been out for hours and my icing was too sugary and thick as well. The taste of the cupcake was good though. I am and was not pleased that my cupcake was half the size of his and I still paid $3.50 for it. I contacted management by email the next day and STILL have not heard back. Im sure if I emailed them with a compliment they wouldve gotten back to me by now! For them to not respond to a complaint email is very unprofessional. I do still hope to hear back from them or will email them again. Do not waste your time or money on these cupcakes, not worth it. Go out of your way to Georgetown Cupcake or make them yourselves...youll have better luck!

Okay so here is my update since I used my Specialicious coupon, it got me four cupcakes with a couple of dollars added. The lady working there was extremely nice and helpful with no issues using the coupon. I got four cupcakes: OMG, Strawberry Fields, Chipaliscious and Pumpkin Harvest. Chipilscious is a vanilla bean cupcake for chips and buttercream frosting.. I can only say my almost 2 yr. old seemed to enjoy it. Strawberry Fields -- hated it! I am glad a portion of it was going to charity as I threw it away... its that whole greasy frosting deal I have mentioned before and the cake itself just did not appeal... I wish they would tweak their frostings but hey maybe it does please the majority ?? Pumpkin Harvest - loved it! Very yummy pumpkin cake and the cream cheese frosting was good... also loved the pumpkin on top. OMG -- is OMG!!!! That was super YUMMY. I will be looking for this on the menu... banana cupcake filled with caramel, iced with peanut butter cream (not greasy -- not sure if its the peanut butter or everything else going on with the cupcake but it worked) and dipped in choc. ganache.... MUST TRY THIS ONE PEOPLE! Bought the cupcakes Fridays and they were still fresh and moist on Sunday. I did not move it up in stars because out of 6 cupcakes, but its a solid three now. I only enjoyed a few or parts of them but I do know what to avoid and what to get..

The employees were very rude. The frosting was way too buttery. The vegan Cupcake had butter in butter frosting when it was NOT supposed to have dairy!

I'm a total cupcake snob, if I'm going to eat the calories, it had better be darn good and worth the long run later and Cupcakes Actually is worth every mile of atonement. We tend to come here for special ocassions and have tried a few variations but one thing remains the same. The flourless chocolate cupcake is divine! The frosting is the perfect balance of sweetness, there is no cloying after taste and the cake is impecable. The dipped peanut butter is also pretty good but that chocolate one....oh yes so worth it. I should note their cupcakes with cream cheese frosting are also pretty darn tasty. We typically preorder and pick up in the morning and they're always so amazingly fresh and delicious. Hmmm.....now I just have to make it to the next birthday as an excuse to order them.

This a a cute shop. Its close by so when I have a sweet tooth I stop in. The cupcakes are higher priced than average for the area. I've tried a variety of their cupcakes but the only one that I love enough to buy again is the red velvet.

This review is for the service since I was unable to obtain cupcakes from them today to provide a review for. I've had their cupcakes in the past and thought they were decent, nothing I would go out of the way to retrieve..and certainly not after today's experience. I purchased a Specialicious deal about 30 mins before I walked in there today, I provided my order, I passed over my phone with the redemption code clearly visible. The girl behind the counter was trying to multi task with I'm not quite sure what but also didn't know how to redeem the voucher. She swiped my phone a few times, said she lost the code, and then gave me a different smart phone to enter the code myself. So I did, I didn't click any buttons and she told me she couldn't use the voucher because it was already redeemed. I told her I just purchased it, the deal said it was just purchased today, she hasn't seen me prior to me standing there at that precise moment, and since the cupcakes were already rung up and the promo was already reflected in the cash register to let me just pay for it in exact change that I already had out and we would be done. She muttered something about not being able to track the voucher to the sale or something. This was not acceptable to her so she spoke to the manager that didn't even come out even though a line was forming. (I did apologize to the people that were waiting anyhow). When the girl returned, she said it was something that needed to be taken up with Specialicious. When I contacted Specialicious, they said I'd marked my voucher as redeemed..which was not the case..the girl behind the counter must have inadvertently marked it when she was swiping my phone rather than entering the code appropriately into their phone that they were using. What a bummer. Word to you voucher redeemers.. if it's marked 'used' just un mark it and don't pass over your phone. Just tell them the code.

This cupcake shop is over priced. The best one is the flour-less chocolate cupcake but all of the other cupcakes are dry and disgusting. I've continued to return in hopes of change, but these cupcakes ARE NOT worth $3.50.

Alright, Cupcakes Actually, you have managed to improve your cupcakes enough that it warranted an update. While I have always loved the Red Velvet, the buttercream frostings were SERIOUSLY lacking-- in flavor, that is. Before, they tasted like greasy, sweetened Crisco. Bleh. It seems that you have taken the criticism to heart, though, and changed your recipe because the frosting has improved significantly. It's more of a creamy buttercream now, without any of the waxy, greasy feel/taste. I'm impressed. While I still don't think the shop has quite earned 5 stars, I'll gladly give 4 now.

  • Stephanie M.

These are the best cupcakes I have ever had. The only thing that stopped me from giving them a 5 rating is that there have been a couple of times they weren't consistent (undercooked/overcooked). And also their staff is typically (surprisingly) unenthusiastic.... You work in a cupcake shop -- smile and be friendly! :p

I'm honestly STUNNED by the negative reviews of Cupcakes Actually... I have tried SO many cupcakes from all over the country, including many here in the DC area: Georgetown Cupcake, Cake Love, Hello Cupcake, Sprinkles...you name it and I've had it. NOTHING has even come close to Cupcakes Actually. Yes, they are a little pricey but the thing is that specialty cupcakes are meant to be just that...special. It's not something you eat everyday or even every week. As a splurge once in a while, the prices make sense. As far as the moistness of the cake and flavor of icing...delish. I have never once had a dry cupcake from Cupcakes Actually, and I've probably had two dozen since I've been going there since they opened in all sorts of flavors. I just ordered two tonight and the Choco Dipped Banana was more moist than some banana bread I've had/made. The frosting to me is delicious. Not too sweet, not too bland. These cupcakes are delicious. I've also ordered custom cupcakes from them and they turned out really great. It was a relatively short turn around time and I appreciated them accommodating me. I appreciate that they post their weekly flavors on Facebook and their website. Kudos for the cute containers they give you for to go orders. The OMG is probably my favorite cupcake in their lineup. Vanilla Bean & Dipped Black & White are also delish. The ONLY reason I don't give them five stars is because I'm still miffed that I emailed the owner/manager requesting some donated cupcakes for wounded warriors and their families through my work and never received a response. Even if they couldn't/didn't want to participate, a simple email saying "No Thanks" would have been nice...especially since I had just ordered some custom cupcakes from them.

I've been there a half-dozen times since I'm often in the shopping center, and every time I regret it. We typically buy 4 cupcakes, and every time 3 are quite dry and one is just ok. I don't get it. We've tried probably 10 different varieties, which are all good-sounding in theory and lackluster (and of course dry) in execution. Usually it's the plain chocolate with vanilla buttercream that tastes ok, but sometimes that doesn't come out either. I think their icing has improved but if the cake's no good, it doesn't matter. If you can't nail the basics, the cupcakes aren't worth $1, let alone $3. The ganache is good, but I can get that elsewhere. Crumbs is far better and the cupcakes are bigger for the price, and that's a chain!

  • Amanda G.

This place has great flavors, but is pricey if you're ordering more than just 1 ($4+/cupcake? really??). I give it 2 stars because of the recent experience I had when ordering 24 cupcakes for a gender reveal party for my boss. I took in a SEALED envelope with information on the baby's gender and SPECIFICALLY said I did NOT want to know the gender as we were having a party so the whole office could find out at the same time. I just needed them to fill the cupcakes with pink icing if it was a girl and blue icing if it was a boy. I went to pick up my $80 worth of cupcakes and had to sign some sort of release and on that document was the COLOR of the filling icing. There were also about 3 cucpcakes that weren't iced sufficiently so you could totally see the filling color. Such a disappointment. In short - if you're into uniquely flavored cupcakes every now and then, this place is great. otherwise...hit up wegmans.

I really like this place. It's a cupcake store. Their cupcakes are really delicious, it's not too sweet, very moist, made with fresh ingredients. They make great red velvet cupcakes which I liked a lot. However, my favorite would be their banana/berry cupcake, The texture and taste had a great balance. At this location, it was clean and the service was good. I think it place is for anyone who enjoys sweets and fresh foods.

I've eaten there a few times and each time I was a little disappointed. Their style of frosting is not my cup of tea; it's sort of whipped and not as rich as I would like. The flavor was underwhelming. Overall it just doesn't compare to some of the better cupcake places in the area.

Very yummy cupcakes! Came here with a friend and the kids and we loved it. Not a lot of room to sit and eat on site, but I loved that they had "milk shots." The kids made quite a mess and the lady was very friendly and didn't make us feel bad about it. (I helped clean up, I'm not that kind of a person!) I would definitely go there to order cupcakes for an event.

A delicious chocolate, flourless gluten free cupcake was very good when I had it. I went on a weekday and it wasn't busy at all, and prices were on point for a single cupcake (I believe around $3). The cupcake was moist and not too dense. I wish they would have had more gluten free offerings.

  • Annabelle L.

This place is good for the following reasons: it's located walking distance to my apartment; the cutsey ambiance of the shop (it's adorable!); they have at least one gluten-free cupcake available each day. -1 star because: the cupcakes are sometimes dry (particularly if you go later in the day. we've had better luck on morning visits). -1 star because the staff is sometimes unfriendly, to the point where they will say nothing to you during the whole cupcake purchase & even look at you weird when *you* tell THEM to have a nice day. this is only sometimes.

I was cravings for cupcakes and this one is very close to my home (10 mins) and its in Fairfax corner so why do not we go there and have some cupcakes and fun. My friends and I each ordered one cupcake with different flavors and all of us agreed that it was dry dry dry and hard. It was not not good for the prices. I ordered Salted caramel and it was tooooooo salty that I could not eat it. It suppose to have that saltiness but not like this one. I am very disappointed.

Tried the Flourless Chocolate and Caramel Delight today. YUMMY on the chocolate (it was like eating a brownie), but skip the caramel (WAY too sweet, even for my sweet tooth). Not sure if this is new, or maybe I didn't even notice it before, but they sell $0.25 shots of milk to guzzle down your cupcake with.

When Cupcakes Actually first opened, the cupcakes were on the dry side and therefore not that satisfying, but since then, they've really improved their recipe! The cupcakes are actually really good now and quite moist, and I love the frosting. I actually prefer Cupcakes Actually over places like Sprinkles, which is a bit dense for me. They're a bit pricey, which is a downfall, but that doesn't stop me from getting a red velvet once in a while. ;)

Not as good as the more local cupcake place... I found their shop set up to be quite cramped and uncomfortable. The people who work there though are VERY nice. I had a Vanilla Bean cupcake that was decorated for the 4th of July... and although it was 8p, the cupcake was a little on the stale side. I've been to other cupcake places just before closing and those cupcakes have never been stale. Anyway, very basic recipe. Nothing out of this world, and maybe not so much worth the $3+... Also, I purchased the Chocolate Dipped, Strawberry Fields and the Flourless Chocolate. I tried the chocolate dipped (got it for the Beau), but was too busy stuffing my face with the Flourless Choco to really taste the dipped... it looked interesting enough though. My flourless one was quite good; the cupcake itself was either supposed to be more fudgy than cakey, or it was undercooked. I had a bite of the Strawberry Fields (again, purchased for the Beau) and wasn't too impressed. That cupcake was also on the stale side. The icing on all the cupcakes was just too heavy for a "gourmet" cupcake. I really prefer the whipped icing style than the heavy icing... I would stop by if I were in the area as I want to try their mint cupcake... but I would not make a trip JUST for CA when there's Cupcake Heaven right down the street.

I've been a fan of Cupcakes Actually every since I discovered them back in 2011. I think it just depends on the person when it comes to their cupcakes. I like them and have not had any bad experiences with staff. They were always helpful, cordial, and patient with me. I have not been disappointed with any cupcake I have had except MAYBE one. I was in an adventurous mood and tried some type of zucchini cupcake. It was okay. I ate it. So that says something I guess. I actually like them better than Georgetown Cupcakes. Had them once and never had them again. They are just not worth the hype. But if you are in the area of Fairfax, I suggest giving Cupcakes Actually a try! At least try the Red Velvet cupcakes. =)

Surprise Surprise: I was craving a cupcake. Guess how often that happens? Prolly everyday :D Oh well, anyways, luckily this day my two friends were willing to get some too, so we hopped in the car and drove to Fairfax corner. OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG! I had the OMG cupcake, and right there I had an OMG moment :D It's a banana cake with a caramel filling, glazed with chocolate with a cream filling and peanut butter flakes on top. Oh God, it was delicious! One of my friends got the flourless choco one which was also good, and the third friend got the plain vanilla which was not as special. Definitely coming here again!

If I say I am a cupcake snob in one more Yelp review it will only mean one thing: I eat too many cupcakes. I've been to all the heavy hitters: Georgetown Cupcake, Baked & Wired, Magnolia, Sugar Sweet Sunshine ... and this one goes right up there with them. You wanna know how I know? Because I did a double-blind taste test. Oh yes, Yelpers. I went there. After a trip to Georgetown I had purchased some cupcakes for my family when, incidentally, my sister had picked a few up from Cupcakes Actually. We decided to compare the Red Velvets from GC to CA. To add a bit more intrigue, we also compared GC Chocolate Ganache to the CA Flour-less Chocolate. We administered pieces of the cupcakes to people who had never had them from either place. Cupcakes Actually won in the Chocolate department, whereas GC won in the Red Velvet, but only by a point or two. Needless to say, it's great to have a cupcake place so close to us NOVA residents and it's a fun place to eat dessert after a movie. Don't forget, student discounts are 15% and if you bring in your movie stub that's also a discount!

  • Karisa D.

It's not a bad cupcake place. It's a cute little shop that offers a variety of different flavors each day. I had their Simply Red (their Red Velvet) which was fine and the frosting was fairly tasty. But for me, there was just too much frosting and the cupcakes are bit on the pricy side...

    (2)
  • Michelle N.

So now that it's been 2 years and I've gotten to know what GOOD cupcakes taste like, I have to say that Cupcakes Actually is not all that. While I *do* stop here when I need an emergency cupcake (not enough time for me to bake my own or I just want to give one cupcake as a gift) then I do stop here as a last resort, but mostly because there are no other cupcake shops nearby. How I wish Baked & Wired or Bakeshop were closer! Overall this place does seem to do very well, although over priced, and they have quite a selection of unique flavors, they're also in a great location in Fairfax Corner and have outdoor seating. Though they don't seem to happy Pinkberry is next door or that their customers are taking over their tables.

As my hobby, and for my blog, I venture out to cupcakeries near and far. This one happens to be very near, so I have tried many of their cupcakes. I think they get a bad rap. Their cupcakes are pricey, but that's probably due to high rent. There is nothing better than strolling through Fairfax Corner on a gorgeous day and then devouring a cupcake. Because I like to try different flavors, I love that I can check their web site weekly for an updated list of flavors. The site also has detailed descriptions of each cupcake. I appreciate this, because a name does not describe what is in the cupcake. Caribbean Queen The Caribbean Queen is described as a pina colada cupcake, blended with coconut, pineapple, and rum, topped with a coconut rum frosting. i will say my head felt a slight tropical buzz after eating my cupcake. This cupcake was like a trip to the Copa, Copa Cabana! It was tropical and light and rumdidlyumptious. And I want another one. Right now. Razzmatrazz The key is to get this cupcake fresh. I have had it fresh, and a bit on the stale side. But the good memory trumps the bad. The fruity, light, fresh raspberry buttercream is one of the best dessert memories I have. Soooooooo good. Death by Chocolate I plead with you, friends, to give them another chance, with their Death by Chocolae cupcake, on the menu this week. It is choc-tastic. Count Chocula would approve it. The key to a truly spiritual cupcake experience is to taste the best that cupcakery has to offer, and for chocolate fans, this is IT. Gingerbread I got some cupcakes for my family one Christmas Eve, and this was my fave. I'm not a huge ginger or gingerbread fan-I consume just one Gingerbread Latte at Starbucks during the entire Christmas season. So it's appropriate that I need just one little gingerbread cupcake to fill me with yuletide joy. The cake is a bit more dense, with all of those holiday spices packed in (but not overdone). It has a delicious cream cheese frosting on top, and a super cute sugar gingerbread man. This cupcake is great for holiday parties. Finally, the owner is super nice. I m a teacher, and she once generously donated some cupcakes to an event at my school. Some fancier, more well-known places in this area don't even respond to such requests. Support your local cupcakeries!

These cupcakes are quite amazing. I tried the last night at a friend's party. I am not really a Red Velvet fan, and Cupcake Actually's are by far, THE best, I've ever had. (Trust me, my hips show that I've eaten a cupcake or two!) I also had the Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse, one. A-mazing!!!!! I will definitely be heading to Fairfax to try other flavors soon!

These guys have the BEST cupcakes!!!! Not too sweet and a great selection of flavors. The only negative is the "milk shot". $0.25 for a shot of milk? Are you kidding me?!!!! Their sign says, "are you thirsty?" If I'm thirsty, a shot is certainly not going to quench that thirst. But this is a cupcake shop, hence the five stars. ;)

The last time I went to Cupcakes Actually was a few years ago. I remember enjoying them, but they didn't necessarily knock my socks off. The other day, I went in to get a few cupcakes. There was someone assisting a woman with placing some sort of large order, so I waited. Unfortunately, I was not even acknowledged. There were a few employees in the back area and they didn't say anything to me either. It was as if I was invisible! I was extremely disappointed with the lack of customer service and left. I just perused some more of the reviews for this place and it seems like the customer service is an ongoing problem!

I always always always get the OMG, BEST CUPCAKE FLAVOR EVER! Red Velvet would come second. In my opinion, all the others aren't that great. The size of cupcake is slightly larger than Georgetown Cupcake, therefore it's slightly more expensive. The moist, rich flavor isn't as awesome as Georgetown Cupcake, but it's excellent in the Fairfax area! These cupcakes are also available at GMU every Thursday, which saves me the drive :). I'm going to stock up more on the OMG's in my fridge! :D

A groupon brought me here on Saturday. Very small shopfront, but I was just buying and leaving, so I wasn't bothered. The OMG cupcake was AMAZING! It was peanut butter, caramel and banana and was very different. Almond cupcake was pretty good, as were the strawberry ones. It looks as if they rotate their flavors frequently. I'm not local enough to stop in all the time, but I'd definitely return.

It's so nice to find a cupcake place out here in the 'burbs. Plus it's even nicer when they make tasty cupcakes! We tried Cupcakes Actually for the first time today (Saturday). I had the vanilla bean one and my husband had the razzmatazz. The vanilla bean was nicely flavored with just the right amount of sweetness. The frosting was light in texture and like the cake part, the vanilla flavor came through nicely. Also, it was moist yet it held together very well. Sometimes cupcakes can be too moist thus they fall apart too easily---this was not the case with these cupcakes. My husband thought that the razzmatazz had great raspberry flavor. He said he was glad he tried it and would gladly have it again. I tend to try a vanilla cupcake when I first give a new cupcake joint a try. If it proves to be properly done, then on future visits I branch out. So...given our experience today, next time I will branch out and try a different flavor! Just note---when you look at their menu on the website, you will see a wide variety of cupcakes. However, not all flavors will be available on any given day. I asked the clerk about that and she said that they tend to rotate the flavors with some being a constant (like vanilla bean). My one complaint (if you can even call it that)---I think they should offer up a vegan cupcake. Most cupcake places do just that. However, they did have a flourless one for those with gluten intolerance.

I love this place! The flour-less chocolate cupcake is awesome! I have taken cupcakes from here to huge fans of other cupcakeries and for Californians (You know how picky they can be and how they tend not to like most things not-from California?). They all loved them. The service is very nice and friendly. I can say that with confidence since I have been there quite a few times. Oh, and love love love the cake bites. For a $1, it's three bites of pure bliss. Since its a blob of cake covered with ganache-like icing from all sides, the cake stays very moist.

I LOVE these cupcakes. My personal favorite is the golden nugget, with luscious carrot cake and yummy cream cheese icing. Don't overlook the flourless chocolate if you have a serious chocolate craving (or even if you don't). Brought home a blackberry cupcake today for my very picky 20-something, and she said it was PERFECT! The blackberry was ripe and juicy, and there were bits of blackberry all through the cake. These cupcakes are a perfect hostess gift as well, and they are a hit with my business clients. Everyone loves the red velvet.

Simple. Pros: - A good variety of cupcakes - Dense Cake - Frosting is thick and sweet - Clean shop - Great location - Outdoor seating Cons: - Some what pricey - Frosting can be TOO sweet - Workers could use a smile - Cakes are not moist Others: I tried the vanilla bean cupcake a while back and I remember it was GREAT not too sweet and fluffed frosting but then I also got the red velvet and that was a red sugar cake with pure sugar cheese frosting. Worst.

We ordered the banana cupcake and flourless chocolate cupcake. The banana cupcake was moist, but I did not like the frosting on it. It tasted too much like frosting from a supermarket. The flourless chocolate tasted undercooked. The outside edges had a nice texture to it but the inside seemed gummy. The buttercream frosting was also flavorless and heavy. Here's the biggest drawback to this place: Overpriced cupcakes and lack of seating. There is only one table with two chairs. Georgetown cupcakes and Red Velvet cupcakes are worth the drive out to DC.

  • Lann W.

I purchased cupcakes from cupcakes actually since Georgetown cupcake (which I have had and love) was too busy. I purchased 4 and an additional 10 to take home. In the box of 4 we were given the wrong cupcake as one was marked as champagne but filled with lemon. Overall they were pretty good but I still think Georgetown is much better. The additional 10 were intended for my family the next day, however the next day they all felt like bricks which leads me to believe they couldn't have been made fresh that day. Very disappointed!

4.5! Other than my kitchen, this is the closest and most delicious cupcakery to me! It's easy to find in Fairfax Corner (almost right opposite Caribou) and although small, is never overly crowded. They have a boutique like setup inside always with very friendly service. I've sat inside plenty of times to have tea and a cupcake with a friend. They also have a few tables set up outside so you can enjoy your cupcake outdoors when it's nice out. On to the good stuff: The cupcakes! I LOVE their red velvet with cream cheese frosting and their carrot cake is one you MUST get when available - it's pretty much perfect. I'm not a big fan of buttercream frosting but have sampled friends' Actually Dipped Black and White, Caribbean Queen, and Vanilla which aren't that bad. Definitely try out this cupcakery.

  • Tu-van L.

Have to say - this place serves some of the best cupcakes I've had. The frosting (regular or dipped) is very flavorful and very sweet yet not overpowering. Just the perfect amount with the perfect texture to compliment the light and moist cake. I didn't get to try the Strawberry Fields or their other fruity flavors, but when I do most likely I can confirm that this is my favorite place. Cakes are kinda pricey but the flavors make it worth it.e Located in the Fairfax Center just a couple storefronts from REI. Can't miss the cute yet not too frilly-pink storefront.

I visited this location today and used a Specialicious coupon ($12 value for $6). I got 4 cupcakes, but had to pay $2.29 since each was approx. $3.50. Just tried the Flourless Chocolate cupcake (which was highly recommended by the staff person), and it was delicious! Hope the other cupcakes are just as good.

My love for cupcakes is never-ending. Something about miniature cakes filled with sweetness that just brings the kid out of me. And that I can share my love of cupcakes with boys is a true delight. Which is why I L-O-V-E Cupcakes Actually out in Fairfax Corner. I have been here 5 times and will always come back! I first about this place when I was getting my hair done at Elizabeth Arden and the owner was in the chair next to me. It sounded great, a cupcake place 30 minutes away. When it finally opened, I was excited! Pale blue and glass accent the main star of the show, the cupcakes. The selections were divine! My first pick Strawberry fields. Strawberry infused vanilla cake with a strawberry buttcream. YUM! My youngest chose their flourless chocolate cupcake (he always picks that one!) moist and decadent with the right amount of frosting (which by the way is a joy to eat in itself!) and My oldest picked their Simply Red, red velvet with the best cream cheese frosting ever! And the only I will ever eat. They also have dipped cupcakes, yes, dipped! They have their standards displayed often and have specialty ones that change day to day. On this rainy day, since I was meeting someone, I went and they had Pucker-up, one of their standards, lemon cupcake with lemon curd, made think of summer. And I chose their Caramel Delight, vanilla cake with caramel filling, topped with a vanilla buttercream (yum yum yum!) and toffee! SOO GOOD! If you buy 5 cupcakes you get one free (um, hi, free!) and if you buy a dozen or more, 15% off. Cupcakes actually is sweet place with sweet treats, go there and you will fall in love too!

Went there yesterday at the urging of a friend. the cupcakes were fantastic (no shortening/powdered sugar gunk here!) and The Italian Stallion cupcake had me swooning. The only reasons I don't go 5 stars here are: the girl working the counter was remarkably RUDE, unfriendly and seemed pretty annoyed with having to help a customer AND the prices are a bit high. But, its Fairfax so you get what you get. I would definitely go back and will hope for a friendlier experience.

I love me a good cupcake. Unfortunately, the idea of this place is better than the cupcakes. The blue interior and cute setup is inviting and very boutique-ish. Their cupcakes are also really cute and decorated nicely, but that's all that I really remember about them. Their butter-cream frosting literally tasted like butter. Ew. The only cupcake (minus the frosting) I really enjoyed was the flour-less chocolate cake - I loved the intense chocolately-ness of it (hence the 2 stars as opposed to less). I honestly would not make a special trip for this place; I'm not even sure if I'd get another cupcake here even if I were in the area doing some shopping.

I haven't really gotten into this whole cupcake craze that's been sweeping across the country lately. I don't know if this is because I've just never been that crazy about cupcakes or because I saw some of the footage of block-long lines on Food Network, but I just haven't tried that many of these places. I did try this one...a few times. Each cupcake I've had here has been quite pleasant. Granted, I haven't had all of the different flavors but I've had enough to derive an opinion. The flourless chocolate cupcake was extremely tasty, same with the dipped black and white, and the caramel cupcake. Each one I've had was a top notch baked good. The nice lady I've encountered working there earlier in the day sometimes is so pleasant I'm not surprised she's working in a cupcake shop. My only complaint has to do with cupcake storage or timing or something else I'm missing. When I walk in and get a cupcake at noon the cupcake is moist, lightly crumbly, and downright sinfully good. At eight or nine in the evening I'm getting a somewhat dryer and less tasty cupcake. I don't know if they're baking all day long or just get most of it done in the morning or what, but this is the only thing I've noticed which dampens my spirits about this otherwise wonderful little shop.

Cupcakes Actually was actually great. What a pleasant surprise! This is definitely beyond regular cupcake standards. I tried Actually Dipped Peanut Butter and Actually Dipped Chocolate. I liked both but Peanut Butter one more than the other.

Wow, a lot of these reviews are pretty harsh. I'm surprised. I think the flavors are fun, the decorations are cute and they taste good! I agree the cake can be a little dry, particularly on the vanilla flavors, but it's not a deal breaker. Also, the store is really cute and the employees are kind. The feature that I most appreciate about their cupcakes are that I'm not left feeling queasy after eating one (or two!). So often I regret eating cake because it upsets my stomach. I'm guessing Cupcakes Actually has less sugar and fat than in typical cupcakes.

Cupcakes Actually claims to be "cupcake snobs" on its website. The only thing snobby about this place is its location in Fairfax County. It is not the Prada of cupcakes. It is not Coach. Hell, this place doesn't even have a better cupcake than the local Giant grocery store. How dare they set up my expectations for something magical?! I wanted these cupcakes to be good. Groupon was running a special where one could get a dozen cupcakes for 20 dollars. That is not a horrible deal, so I thought why not. I needed cupcakes for a birthday anyway. I had one cupcake from this place before. The artwork was beautiful, but the taste did not wow me. I thought maybe one of the plainer looking cupcakes would be more flavorful. But not so much. Still didn't taste like much more than a heap of icing. The icing, the only delectable thing about this sweet treat, is in fact too much. This is definitely what I would consider heavily frosted. The cake was not light nor was it fluffy, but the icing was. Very seldom is the icing better than the cake, but this was one of those anomalies. I am trying to figure out why this cupcakery always has such a long line. It was the line that kept me from trying this place many times before, and instead, opting for Pinkberry next door. Now I think a lot of the business this place receives is runoff business from Pinkberry. If it were to have to stand on its own merits I do not think it would make it. This line also deceived me and made me think these tiny treats would be amazing Groupon greediness keeps making me try things that I probably should not. The kicker is that Groupon allowed customers to buy two, so I still have another Groupon that I must use.

I felt like since I was out in Fairfax that I should pay a visit to Cupcakes Actually to add to my list of cupcake reviews. The decor was very cute and it's in a great spot in the Fairfax Corner shopping area. The cupcakes are displayed very nicely (sort of like how they are at Georgetown Cupcake) and the staff are very friendly. They provide tables and chairs to sit and immediately enjoy your delicious treat. The cupcakes are pricier than other places - $3-4 each. I had a vanilla/vanilla cupcake - it's my "test" flavor for all the cupcakeries that I visit. The cake had great flavor, just right right amount of vanilla. It was also moist and the right size (about 4-5 bites). The frosting was interesting. It wasn't bad, just different. It had the consistency of whipped cream, but slightly more dense. It wasn't like typical frosting. It had a great vanilla taste as well and you could see the vanilla bean flecks in the icing. Overall it was good, but since I live several miles away from this place I wouldn't go out of my way for a cupcake. If I were back in the area shopping I definitely would stop by for a treat. Oh, I have to mention that I was outside eating my cupcake on this fine Saturday and a family of four walked by - the two kids gleefully pronounced, "Daddy - that lady is having a cupcake!" I smiled and carried on. It was really cute.

I really wanted these cupcakes to be good. I really did. But after trying several different flavors during 3 visits all spaced over 4 months...it's just not going to happen. I too, got the dry forgettable cupcake and I found the icing to be overwhelming and sometimes working against the cake instead of enhancing the flavor of the cupcake. After trying a few cupcake spots in the city I guess i'm spoiled. So cupcakes will just have to remain an occasional treat I allow myself whenever I'm in certain parts of DC :-/

What can i say about cupcakes actually. Its a really nice little shop and they have a good variety of cupcakes that you can stare at through a glass. But that was it for me. I would give it 2.5 stars so basically its good but not great. I tried 5 different types of cupcakes that were really nicely decorated, they were not moist like i would've liked but they were also not dry. For me the regular chocolate and red velvet were the best of the ones tried and the flour-less chocolate was way too rich for me taste. The cupcakes cost between $3 to $4 each and if you buy 5 you get the 6th one free. For the price i was expecting more but if you love cupcakes go check them out.

I agree w/ Mikey T. on this one: Actually, no. Well, more like ... Actually, I-can't-ever-go-back-because-I-got-violently-ill-after-eating-here. We all have that one place that we kinda liked, but then got sick after eating there so we can't ever go back. Cupcakes Actually (CA) is that place for me. I've been to CA a handful of times, so this review isn't just about my latest visit. The first time I went, the cupcakes were horribly dry and I think the one I ate scratched my throat when I swallowed it. That was shortly after they opened, though, so I decided to give them another shot. My second visit was a bit better because the cupcake didn't stab my throat when I swallowed it. I was given pumpkin cupcakes w/ cream cheese icing on my birthday and they were very yummy. On my last visit to CA, though, something went wrong. I ordered a banana cupcake w/ rum buttercream icing. Sounds good, right? Well ... it tasted a bit off but I thought that was because of the rum buttercream which I had never had before, so I continued to eat it. **Skip to 2:15am** Me = on my bathroom floor while my dog looked at me and wondered why I was cursing a cupcake (he knows how much I love them) and rolling around in pain. Bottom line ... If you live right next to CA, go ahead and go. If you have to drive even half a mile to get there ... keep going and drive into Arlington or DC and get a decent cupcake.

After a handful of visits and trying out most of their flavors I've noticed a decrease in quality, since their grand opening. The cakes aren't moist and the flavors on the icing are lacking. The little bites sometimes don't taste as "fresh" which may explain why the cakes are harder at times. They offer a variety of flavors (each differing on the day). I've come across the red velvet, chocolate swirl, banana, caribbean lady, razzmatazz, strawberry fields, vanilla bean, coconut, mint julep, lemon drop, and a few of their "specialty" cupcakes. There seems to be a variety but nothing unique (in either the flavor or presentation). It seems that the fruit named cupcakes have a puree of the chosen fruit mixed into the icing, which does give an extra tartness but doesn't seem to be able to balance the sweetness of the icing to the sweetness of the cakes. The "standard cupcakes" start at $3.05 and goes up depending on the complexity of the little dessert (e.g. hand-dipped versus glutton free).

I honestly don't know how the cupcakes are here because we refuse to go after my wife stopped in to ask if they have any Vegan cupcakes because our nephew is allergic to milk. My wife even specified that eggs are even fine as long as they don't have dairy. The cashier didn't know so she called the cook from the back who then berated my wife that they would have to buy all organic ingredients to make vegan cupcakes and that she should know that it would be too expensive to do so (even though Vegan and organic are completely unrelated)

I had been desiring cupcakes for about three weeks and Cupcakes Actually was the closest and best option. We got there around 7pm on a Tuesday night and the selection was fairly limited. We ended up getting flourless chocolate, chocolate devotion and vanilla bean. I was really happy with my two (especially the flourless chocolate) and my husband seemed to enjoy his vanilla bean. I had the chocolate devotion on Wednesday and it was still delicious. Overall not the best cupcakes I've ever had, but they were moist and full of flavor. I'd definitely go back again and try more flavors. Not cheap at $3+ per cupcake, but it's the price you pay in this area for an occasional treat.

Okay, tried these cupcakes today! Pros: -OWOW, they are CUPCAKES first of all, so always YAY in my book! -actaully dipped peanut butter & simply red (velvet cake) were the two i got--both satisfied my craving Cons: -place is very small, but i guess compared to Gtown cupcakes, it's big haha and I brought them home anyways b/c I live so close -EXPENSIVE---these cupcakes are actaully more expensive than gtown cupcakes/lots of other places and the quality is the same or worse -the frosting is too sweet in my opinion but my friend thought it was perfect so it really depends on your sweet tooth -my biggest complaint--they were smaller which was fine, but also the cake part was not moist and juicy--instead it was kind of dry and relied on the frosting to cover up the dryness. -oh right--they used a cream cheese base for the red velvet one and I personally do not like cream cheese base so was slightly disappointed, BUT at least the cream cheese flavor was not as strong as gtown cupcakes b/c at gtown, when utaste the cupcakes, it's BAM!!! cream cheese overload!!! It was decent enough for the area, but for the price and the quality of the cake mix and the sweetness of the icing, i would prob only come back if i had a major cupcake craving (quite often) and it's nearby. thus the 3 stars and not 2 stars. it satisfies, but there are better out there.

Nina S. - hit it on the head. This place is WONDERFUL! I love it for several reasons, I like the unique and large selection of cupcakes. It dissapoints me to go to other places and see: 1. yellow cake with chocolate frosting 2. chocolate with chocolate frosting 3. Red velvet I mean come on,...thats not unique! Cupcakes Actually has a rediculous selection and I'm a huge fan of: 1. Actually Dip Vanilla 2. Flourless Chocolate 3. Caramel something or other And BOY do I want to TRY the cupcake that is called OMG!!!!! OMG, it looks that good! I'm baffled that people actually say this place sucks...never have had a bad cupcake there yet, and considering what some of the other boutique places cost, this one is equally priced, or cheaper, with unique flavors. Also a big fan of pineapple upside down. People only like the cupcake places on Gtown bc they are on tv. I just don't understand the point of waiting in line for 4 hours for a white frosted chocolate cupcake. Go to Cupcakes Actually, they actually ARE better than the crap in DC!

I recently bought the groupon for a dozen cupcakes. Waste of money, even with the groupon it was not worth it. It was my mum's birthday and it seemed like a good idea to have a variety of cupcakes for everyone. I got 2 of each, strawberry fields, banana, red velvet, peanut butter, black and white and the flourless chocolate. I had a bite of each. There was just a lot of frosting (in most you could taste the sugar granules) there was little cake and none were light and airy. I fail to understand that somebody actually pays full price for these cupcakes! service was cold and rigid. Is it too much to show some enthusiasm for your products? As for my mum's birthday, there were lots of unfinished plates of cake. I wish I'd just gotten a small cake from one of the local bakeries instead Cupcakes that Actually Suck.

I came here the other day with a friend and tried the Vanilla Bean cupcake, Yea I know...I should've tried a wilder flavor, but I was feeling vanilla-y. It simply was delicious. Just the right amount of moist to dense ratio. I'm not a frosting fan and normally scrap it off the cupcakes, but this frosting was fluffy and lite. My friend tried the Strawberry cupcake and it was alright...not the greatest strawberry cupcake I've ever eaten, but maybe it was left in the oven for a few minutes over? And I didn't see any strawberries. It definitely wasn't the worst! I picked up a pamphlet while I paid at the counter and saw that their signature cupcakes are dipped in chocolate and what not, so I am interested to know how those taste. Unfortunately, they weren't selling any when we were there. I will be stopping by next time I am in the area to try other flavors.

First, let me say that I am not a fan of butter cream. I work at a cupcakery and I know cupcakes pretty well by now, having tried several in the DC area. Cupcake frostings come in three basic types: buttercream, sugery and tangy. I love sugery frostings, like the kind you probably remember eating as a child. Butter cream to me is just fatty and gross, so that sadly affected my opinion of the cupcakes that were made with buttercream. That said here are my thoughts: Cons: So buttery! Not much sweetness in the frosting. Pricer than others in the area. Pros: Cupcakes held up well despite the heat. The packages have holes to hold them in place, plus holes for your fingers so you can extract them from their box cleanly. Also, cupcakes themselves are made with flavored bases, as opposed to them all being vanilla or chocolate. Too many cupcake places suffer from the lack of individualized bases, including the one I work for. Also, these cupcakes have the most beautiful presentation of any cupcakery in the area. Stunning little works of art. In sum, if you're going to get a cupcake from here, get one with cream cheese frosting. Anything else and you'll be coating your mouth with butter.

So the story is my friends (the locals) told me they had the best red velvet...so it peaked my curiosity so I had to come and try it...although then I went on yelp and was very skeptical after reading the reviews...or rather became really scared to even try it...but we were like what the heck...so ... we walked in...they had about 6 flavors...didn't look very impressive and the price definitely wasn't worth it....3.25 per cupcake? Honestly, if you don't even have reviews to back up your pricing and a line out of your store all hours of the day...sorry not worth it to me. I may or may not go back...but all in all you can totally skip this store and you wouldn't be missing out on anything. I've had better.

I really wanted to love Cupcakes Actually, especially after a conversation that went "is the same actually 'Cupcakes' or is it 'Cupcakes Actually'?" The interior is laid out like a cute boutique with various shades of blue. Additionally, their website is extremely informative, listing their menu of cupcakes and ever changing selection. On the afternoon I went to Cupcakes Actually, they had their assortment of dipped cupcakes as well was a variety of chocolate ones, some fruit flavors, etc. I ordered 2 cupcakes to take home to split with my friend when he got home from work. Not being a chocolate person myself, I ordered the Gold Nugget (a carrot/zucchini cupcake) and the Cherries Jubilee cupcake based on employee recommendation. The Cherries Jubilee cupcake had a nice tart flavor and wasn't at all dry, but I thought the buttercream was absolutely sickening. It was so rich and much too thick. The carrot cake, on the other hand, was fantastic. The cream cheese frosting had just the right proportions, the cake was a bit more dense (which is how I like carrot cake anyway) and it had cute little gold flourishes on the top. I would try the other flavors, especially those with cream cheese based icings. Mostly, I would try them because unlike most cupcake shops, the cupcakes here each sem to have their own personality. The banana cupcake had a little banana on the top and the red velvet had a fondant heart. With flowers and hearts and little flourishes, the cupcakes here are just too cute to pass up. And when have I ever been able to say no to a carrot cake anyway? I'm just sad I wasn't there for the key lime cupcake.

Walked in to find a considerable long line for a quaint lil shop that it is, I guess o came d wrong day because most the stuff was gone, got a vanilla topped chocolate cupcake, the icing was superb topped with sprinkles. And added another chocolate fudge cupcake to go with a chcolate topping With a vanilla cheese fillling - good but not top notch. I like d place but it needs to b a bit more innovative! Do visit!

I haven't been disappointed by Cupcakes Actually and even treated my just-turned one-year old daughter to a Cherries Jubilee cupcake from here on her April 1st birthday. I love the little blue boutique-like shop. I love the simple and limited selection of cupcakes. The treats are decorated beautifully and so is the packaging. In addition to the Cherries Jubilee (which was downright delectable), my husband and I just enjoyed a red velvet cupcake and, gosh, I can't remember the name, but it's a cupcake with carrot, pineapple, coconut maybe?, and cream-cheese frosting. Both were delicious and disappeared quickly. I also purchased 1/2 dozen cupcakes to celebrate a friend's birthday. Everyone thought the treats were very pretty and seemed to enjoy them (we were to busy eating to really discuss them, ha!). I'll be honest: I've had better. Once before the Cupcakes Actually cupcakes were a tiny bit dry. But nothing to balk at or complain about. I've recommended this location to friends and I'd definitely return to treat my daughter. So, if you're not a baker, but you want to treat friends, co-workers, family w/ a baked treat, definitely go there. Or, if you're like me, just go there when you need a sugar fix! P.S. - to you proud parents out there, the ladies at the shop are very doting! this place is definitely child-friendly (it would seem illegal if it weren't, right?)

I knew I was destined to check this bakery out as soon as they opened for business. They are right next door to the salon where I get my hair done and my stylist and I had been chatting about the opening for a while. The blue & white decor is adorable, although not that big a deal since it's too small a storefront to accommodate tables/chairs. The staff was attentive and friendly. The to-go boxes are cute too. And while the cupcake menu had a nice variety of flavors, I have to admit I was pretty sticker shocked. As others have mentioned, the cupcakes are not big, and I dropped over $12 for four of the Red Velvet variety. They were good, and the cream cheese frosting was even better, but this is not enough bang for my buck to make it any kind of regular habit.

Nice little store, staff was okay - no offensive attitude or behavior, great cupcake presentation, look fancy and show well when entertaining, flavor is just very average at best. Bought a dozen for a Christmas dinner with friends and only one person commented that they liked their cupcake, not one of the other 11 people liked theirs.

I have been to this place a couple times but decided to copy/paste my first experirence. The place was small but with only one table to seat three (kind of like Georgetown Cupcake but no stoops) It was pretty warm, clean, & cheery though. They had extra things to sell on the shelves like aprons, shirts, & mugs if you're a hugeee cupcake fan but very expensive. I got "Strawberry Fields" - Our vanilla cake infused with strawberry purée, iced with a rich strawberry buttercream. This cake was very dry and almost hard. It took a surprising amount of effort to put our fork into the cupcake to get a small bite. Maybe it was because we went around 7 and it was closer to the end of the day? The frosting was good though, very light with a hint of strawberry flavor and definitely not too sweet. Nicole suggested the cake and/or the frosting be dyed to make it more pink. Nicole had "Simply Red" - Our vanilla cake infused with strawberry purée, iced with a rich strawberry buttercream. I had a bite of her cupcake and it was very moist & soft. The color was "very red" according to her. The frosting was cream cheese but a slight hint of it. She said it was a little sour, more like sour cream almost but very light as well. I brought home "Simply Red" (the same that Nicole got) and "Actually Dipped Black & White" which is a vanilla cream cake with buttercream frosting dipped in Chocolate. Nothing too interesting but I brought both home for boyfriend to try tomorrow. They didn't have the key lime or lemon flavors that I was originally going to get him so these will have to do. The boxes were nice because they had inserts so no messiness or crushed cupcakes! I

Cupcakes Actually is THE BEST!!! Their cupcakes are definitely the most delicious!!! I have stopped in when I am in the area and gotten cupcakes for my friend's birthdays and always gotten BIG thanks! They recently did a WONDERFUL job for my friend's baby shower. Everyone commented on how delicious the cupcakes were, they were so pretty nobody wanted to eat them, but once they took a bite...they ended up eating more than one!! The staff is great and always willing to help! Go there and get some today!

I needed about 2 dozen cupcakes for a last minute event and decided to try this place out. I got the vanilla bean, actually dipped black and white, and blackberry...I picked them up early and they were all fresh baked and packed carefully. They were all amazing--my guests kept asking where I got them. I would definitely go back here for cupcakes.

You can tell how much detail went into this place from the interior all the way down to the embellishments on the cupcakes themselves. Not only do the cupcakes look pretty but they taste amazing, as well. I've been to Sprinkles in L.A., Georgetown Cupcakes and Cake Love but Cupcakes Actually outranks them all, in my opinion. I have tried the Strawberry Fields, Flourless Chocolate, Simply Red and Actually Dipped (peanut butter - yum!)cakes and they were all awesome. Moist cake with just the right amount of icing. CA price is not high but actually competitive for a specialty cupcake shop. I paid $3.25 per cupcake at Sprinkles but it didn't taste or look as good. I also don't mind the price being that this is a family owned and operated business which I am happy to support .

I LOVE cupcakes and consider myself an expert. I've been to all 18 cupcakes places in the DMV area and these just aren't good. They aren't disgusting but I'd rather eat a cupcake I baked myself. Considering this cupcake place is the closest to my house, I still pass them up every time.

I've come back here 3 times after my initial visit. One time at the end of the day and another time mid day. I have to say within a 2/3 week timeframe, my initial excitement was gone. The cupcakes were just decent. Nothing that would make me want to pay over 3$ per cupcake. A couple of the ones that we bought were dry. I was hoping this place would be consistent but the real test is the second visit and already they are declining. I'll continue to go because its decent and close and i suppose will fulfill my cupcake cravings but i wont be frequenting on a regular basis :/

**3.5 Stars** Don't get me wrong, I enjoy cupcakes, but I've failed to really catch on to the whole cupcake craze. Sure, some cupcakes are really good and some are just okay, but after while, a cupcake is a cupcake. I noticed this place for the first time the other day, when I saw a sign pointing to the shop as I was driving by. I decided to stop in and see what the place was like. The shop was pretty small and looked like just about every other cute little cupcake shop around. It was pleasant. I decided to go for a red velvet cupcake, consisting of red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting and a little red heart shaped chocolate on top. The cake was nice and moist and the frosting was good, not too sweet or overwhelming. I definitely enjoyed this cupcake more than the cupcakes I've had at CakeLove in Tyson's. Very good cupcake, but I'm still just as satisfied making them out of the box at home and getting 24 cupcakes for the price of 2 at any of these cupcake shops.

Worst cupcakes in the area AND they have the nerve to have the worst customer service! The worst vanilla cupcake for sure. The flourless chocolate is too different to be the worst, but it is just below average. I recently tried a "strawberry" cupcake, and it was the worst ever made! It would not be classified as strawberry outside of their shop. YUCK! I will not be back. Try Sweetz Bakery in Dulles or Danielle's Desserts in Tysons, or anyplace else in DC- Hello Cupcake, Baked and Wired, Georgetown, Red Velvet. Anyone saying anything great about this place must NOT know a good cupcake or be an investor, because it is TERRIBLE.

Went to Cupcakes Actually on 2/04/12 to try and use my Groupon for a dozen cupcakes. Their ovens malfunctioned, so no cupcakes. Went back on 2/05/12 to try again at 3:00pm and they were out of cupcakes. The owner said too bad, she was not extending the groupon or authorizing refunds. Told us we would have to try again on 2/06/12. WTF, I came their twice and could not use my Groupon and she wants me to come back a third time! The owner has never heard of Groupon procrastination and seemed shocked by how many people were trying to use their Groupon offer over the final weekend. ALL I CAN SAY IS CUPCAKES ACTUALLY FAILED EPICALLY!

  • Sher R.

I would give them 0 stars, but that is not an option. I have been here a few times, and the cupcakes have been good - comparable to any other cupcake boutique in the area. I purchased a Groupon, and like so many other customers on here, I had issues getting my cupcakes and poor customer service. But most appalling was when I wrote the owner to let her know about my bad experience, I got THE MOST appalling response. Like many other reviewers on here have referenced, yes the cupcake may be good, but the CUSTOMER SERVICE is the real icing on the cake... I will never give them any more of my money again. Groupon or not. Don't treat your customers crappy. I don't want to bore you with every detail but I went back and forth with this owner a few times, In so many words she continued to tell me that the customers who tried to use their Groupon when it was nearing the expiration date were idiots and she argued with me on minor details (I called it a Living Social voucher in my original email to her when it was really a Groupon voucher) This is the attitude of the owner when I brought to her attention that I usually enjoy being a patron of her shop but had a bad experience one weekend when attempting to use my Groupon (oven was broken, workers were rude, I had 2 cupcake flavors to choose from, and NO ONE ever offered me an alternate expiration date..and the cupcakes I did get were DRY DRY DRY)... She wrote as follows: I apologize for your bad experience in our shop. The deal wasn't Living Social, it was Groupon. I would like to explain a couple of things: First of all, we sold 4,100 Groupon Coupons and about 1,500 people waited until the last minute to use their coupons, even though they had six months in which to redeem them. Our store is small and we can only put out so many cupcakes. The oven didn't break on Super Bowl Sunday, it broke Saturday night. Our staff worked tirelessly around the clock, to try and keep up with the demand of angry people, who just thought that they could walk in on the last day and get their cupcakes. If you would have called to pre-order your cupcakes, you could have gotten the selection that you wanted. It was not our fault that there were hundreds of people waiting in line at the last minute. We even gave an alternate date to people for the 18th and 19th of February, if we couldn't accommodate them on that day. The cupcakes were not old, we were baking non-stop to try and keep up with the demand. I am a small business co-owner with my sister and we haves worked very hard to give our customers a quality product with good customer service. We lost a lot of money on this Groupon deal and I have since heard of several businesses who have gone under because of Groupon. The boutique prices of our cupcakes are because they are gourmet and we use very expensive ingredients in preparing them. Groupon should allow businesses to put a cap on the sales, so that they don't continue to have problems like this. Again, I apologize for your negative experience in our shop and hope that you realize that it isn't a usual practice. I also hope that you will give us another try. Sincerely, Susan Woodhouse, Cupcakes Actually

The store is cute, and the displays are dainty, which lends charm to the atmosphere. The cupcakes themselves are impressive, and the icing is not overwhelming or too airy. However, the quality of the cake has varied on the time of day. My favorites have been the carrot cake and the chocolate-dipped peanut butter, though I have not been wowed by the vanilla or chocolate ones. If I am in the area and wanting a sweet something, it would be a great stop - though not really worth a long wait or a trip, especially for a $3-$4 treat.

This place is very cute. I loved the decor (the shades of blue and the cupcake display), but the cupcakes are NOT that spectacular in my opinion. I think Hello Cupcake in DC has much better tasting cupcakes. I am glad to see that Cupcake Hot Spots are poppin up all over VA. though! I tried the banana cupcake with rum icing. The banana cupcake was not very sweet and had a dough-like taste to it. The icing was "ok" not the best. Then, the second cupcake I tried was a simple vanilla with vanilla buttercream. I was not a fan of the frosting. I like a sweeter frosting. The vanilla cake was really just mediocre. :-( I will not be stopping back again.

I think this is as good as cupcakes get. Having been dragged to (ok not dragged) to Georgetown cupcake and Hello Cupcake in DC, i find the cupcakes here to be far superior. The iceing is fantastic, usually a buttecream or creamcheese type. But good icing isnt that hard, its the cake which I have found is usually the part leaving much to be desired with these "designer cupcakes" Some of the flavors here (strawberry, pina colada) are almost like banana bread while others are more like moist cake. The flourless varieties are extremely decadent and rich (too rich for me, but thats what attracts people to flourless cakes). So Cupcakes Actually (for me) takes the gold in the world of overpriced designer cupcakes.

I've been to this place many times, hoping that the next time will have a better cupcake. I've been disappointed every time. The cupcakes are the usual/normal size, but the taste was wayyyyyy tooooo sweeeeettt. REALLY, do you have to add sugar in the batter even if you have a nice tooth aching sweet buttercream on top? It is like eating a tablespoons of sugar in each bite. I like the cake, it was moist and soft. There were many flavors to choose from and the cupcakes tasted as the flavor stated. Its just that it's way too sweet. I won't be getting any more cupcakes from this place until they reduce the sweetness.

I was visiting my parents this past weekend so I decided to pick up dessert from Cupcakes Actually. I had 1/4 of red velvet and chocolate cupcakes; they were OK. Nothing to rave about. For a +$3 cupcake, I expected more.

What I like about Cupcakes Actually vs. Cake Love, is that Cupcakes Actually has "pizazz" in regards to the decor of their cupcakes. Each cupcake here seems to have it's own personality b/c they're oh so unique looking, almost too pretty to eat.

I went today and got the cupcake bites - 3 chocolate brownie and 3 chocolate mint. I ate one of the mint ones while walking back to my car, and was "shushed" by my companions, as it "sounded like I was having an orgasm in public". It was THAT good. Upon returning to the office and sharing my spoils with my co-workers (Take THAT Biggest Loser Contest!) , there was a reverent moment of silence, and I was offered many favors in return...Totally worth the $6 for the bites!

We were happy to discover this place. My husband likes the red velvet cupcake and I go for the choco-peanut butter, which tastes like a gourmet peanut butter cup. Probably too pricey and decadent for us everyday, but we enjoy going here for the occasional treat. We like to go on a nice day, grab a table outside, a couple cupcakes, some fragrant tea to wash it down and people watch to our hearts content.

when did it become acceptable to pay $3.75 for a cupcake???? i had the coconut "cream filled" cupcake (as the website menu described it) but there is no filling in these cupcakes. just plain old cupcakes. Also tried the chocolate dipped chocolate one too. I took one bite of each and that's all. ........this place has officially killed the cupcake craze for me. Viva La Pie!! P.s I emailed a complaint about the description of my cupcake being misleading (yes I was that pissed about my lack of cream filling) and a very nice lady emailed me back promptly and said that the website menu had not been updated since they had changed the recipe and that she was very sorry and thanked me for bringing it to her attention. She also offered me a free cupcake. So kudos for good customer service!

This place is amazing. I have only tried one cupcake there, but that is because it is the best thing I have ever tasted! This would be the NO FLOUR CHOCOLATE one. It is so gooey that you have to eat it in the wrapper so it doesn't fall all over the place. Be sure to have a glass of milk by your side to wash it down with. It makes it all the more better!

The cupcakes are a little small and expensive compared to others. The cake part of the cupcake is really delicious however, which is the cupcake's saving grace. The cupcake looks cute, but the buttercream frosting is a tad too sweet for me. My favorite is the Strawberry Fields cupcake. Skip the Fuzzy Navel (peach). It was the worst of the six we tried. The Fuzzy Navel had a very artificial flavor.

This is such a cute little place. Conveniently located across from the Chipotle I have lunch at way too often. Bakers are friendly and there is always a great selection with new things to try. Red Velvet is still my favorite. At holiday, they had a Grinch cupcake that was pretty good too. I'll be back.

I've been to many of the cupcake places in the DC area and this is the best one. It is home to the best cupcake I've ever had: chocolate cake, peanut butter butter cream, dipped in chocolate ganache. The cake is moist ,the frosting flavorful and light, and the ganache does not get lost or overpower. I wouldn't go here too often because the cupcakes are a bit small and expensive, but I couldn't resist giving 5 stars to something with such superior flavor.

I tried the cupcakes again and they were much better (aka edible). Not nearly as dry as the first time I tried this place. However, they still come nowhere near other cupcake places in the area (Georgetown, Sprinkles). I would come here again if I'm ever craving a cupcake and can't get into DC.

i'm usually not a big fan of butter cream, but the butter cream here was quite fluffy and light instead of the usual over-buttery-ness i tried the flourless chocolate and it was quite chocolatey and delicious - but i agree with others - much too small for $3+ a cupcake - just 'cause they pile on the frosting does not mean it's a big cupcake. i also wish there was more of that light chocolatey goodness cupcake part - i liked that the cupcake top had a little crunch to it the little store was nice, but had an overly frou-frou feel to it - but the staff in the back was having a blast yakking it up - i wish the store had that kind of fun feel to it instead of feeling like a fine china store i would stop by again if i was nearby and the parking doesn't look too bad, but $3+ a cupcake won't get me up and going out of my way for a little chocolatey goodness ...

The dipped mint cupcakes are my FAVORITE! They taste just like mint chocolate chip ice cream which happens to be my favorite! They also remind me of mint chocolate candy which I also love! If mint isn't your thing I also really loved the vanilla cupcakes! All of the cupcakes I got that day were covered in some variation of buttercream frosting and they were all delicious! The buttercream wasn't as sweet as I expected which was great! Definitely will be back soon!

I have always been a devoted fan of cupcakes. I take that back, I am a cupcake FREAK. Despite my efforts to eat healthy, work out six days a week, and make sure I get enough protein to feed my muscles, I will throw all of that to the wind (albeit just once in a while) for a cupcake fix. I may have a body built on lifting weights and running 25 miles per week but I can say I really "run on cupcakes." I wish I could create an icon that shows "Cupcake Inside" in the spirit of Intel's trademark, "Intel Inside." So, having just professed my deep obsession for all things batter, icing, and little paper baking cups, I experienced my first exposure to the concept of the "boutique cupcake" during a recent visit to the Fairfax area. Since I was unable to bake, I wanted to taste how "gourmet" cupcakes compared to my beloved, pre-packaged variety. The shop was cute and quite small inside. The colors were white, dark sapphire, and light sea blue. There were 8 different varieties on pretty cakestands on display behind a clear glass partition. The flavors ranged from cherry-studded poundcake with buttercream icing, raspberry icing-topped vanilla cake, devil's food cake with peanut butter icing dipped in chocolate, vanilla icing with pound cake, pound cake with vanilla dipped in chocolate, chocolate cake with vanilla and chocolate swirl icing, Italian butter cake topped with butter cream icing and my personal favorite, red velvet with cream cheese icing. The cupcake shop's website boasts 19 different types of cupcakes but today I only saw 8. According to the site, I believe they have 19 flavors but choose a select batch each week to feature in store. The two women working there were very nice. They were helpful with my selections and willing to give advice on what was good and what was even better. I bought a box of 6. Buy 5 and the 6th is free. I chose 6 different flavors: red velvet (mine!), chocolate swirl, chocolate dipped (vanilla cake), Italian, raspberry, and vanilla cake with vanilla icing. The prices for each range from $3.05 to $3.75. The size of the cupcakes were about the same as using a standard cupcake pan (12). These cupcakes were expensive for their small size. After spending $17.00+ on 6 little cupcakes, I promptly returned to the Chantilly office with my baked bounty. Five of my office mates (slow Friday and everyone is off at client sites) picked theirs as I got ready to go to red velvet heaven. Everyone agreed their cupcakes were good. The cake was light and not dense. The icing was whipped and not heavy. One of my co-workers/friends balked at the notion that I spent 17 bucks on cupcakes. I agreed but I told him, "I just had to try it." As I pulled back the paper cup, the cake looked moist and light. The red velvet color was not as dark as others I have seen. The color reminded me of faded brick. Oh well, this is going to be good. The cake texture was fluffy and somewhat dry. The flavor was kind of weak and even seemed to have a slight banana after taste. The icing was light and whipped but the bite of cream cheese was overbearing. I normally do not prefer a huge dollop of icing and as a result, I tend to scrape half of it off the top. This icing, despite its light texture, was too tangy. I pulled off a piece off for my co-worker to try and he said it tasted like cream cheese, i.e. Philadelphia Cream Cheese. I know the icing is called 'cream cheese' but it was way too much 'cheese.' I prefer the icing from the store because it has more of a vanilla balance. I doubt I will ever get a craving to buy pre-made cupcakes again. The hefty price tag combined with a chance the taste will be off the mark is too much to risk. I love cupcakes and will probably will try other places from time to time but for now, I will stick to good 'ol Duncan Hines or Pillsbury at home.

I was very disappointed by these cupcakes. I consider myself a cupcake connoseiur of sorts, and have tried cupcakes all over the city. I just got a job in Fairfax, and rushed out during my second week of work out here to try this place. I ordered a red velvet and a key lime cupcake. First of all, when i entered the shop, I was the only one there, but the service was less than enthusiastic. And then, when I ate my cupcake, I was EXTREMELY disappointed. They key lime had NO lime flavor and was very dry. The flavor of the red velvet was good, but again, the same dry cake and lackluster frosting. I will not be making a return trip. Do yourself a favor and head over to Georgetown Cupcake or Baked and Wired instead.

Um, I dont understand how anyone can actually think these cupcakes are worth over $3?? I went yesterday excited to try a cupcake place in VA. First let me say that they looked like the smallest cupcakes I have ever seen sold at a cupcakery... That being said, if they tasted good I wouldn't have minded. But no, they were not good. Rather, the cake was sooo dry and tasted like someone was cooking with a betty crocker mix but forget to add the butter or milk.... Also, they put on about a teaspoon of frosting on them....and the frosting wasnt even good! I hope I can save you $4.00 (with tax) for a cupcake...my advice would be to just buy a box of mix and frosting at the supermarket and make your own rather than eat these second rate cakes....

We have been to CA several times because my son has a class at Fairfax Corner every week. We like to share a cupcake and he enjoys the shot of milk. We have never had poor service. May 7-11 was teacher appreciation week and they were one of few businesses that offered something. All I had to do was show my badge and I got a free cupcake...yum! Thank you CA for appreciating what we do for the community:).

I was recamended this place as a quick fun stop for my two young boys and it did not disappoint. The theme of the decor in Cupcakes matched their cupcakes! Small, well put together and interesting. We had one Chocolate Fudge and a Vanilla Bean. Both were wonderfull. We also like the Hanks Black Berry Soda which we tried for the first time. If your in the area you have to check out Cupcakes Actually.

I love love love the flourless chocolate cupcake. The frosting is a bit sweet so I take some off. The cupcake is so decadent and rich. I would seriously eat it everyday if I could afford the calories. I've had a few of their other flavors such as the actually dipped peaut butter, but the frosting was way too sweet, and I didn't really care for their chocolate cake.

I had seen the shop a couple of weeks ago when I ventured out to REI, but they were closed. Yesterday my mother and I finally got to try it! We walked in and were floored by the beautifully designed cupcakes. I give them an A+ for presentation and for their clear labeling and descriptions of the cupcakes prior to purchasing. I thought they were fairly priced (just over $3.50 each, but if you buy 5 you get one free). Being a cupcake traditionalist, I didn't go for any of their "swankier" cupcakes. My mother and I both got their Flourless Chocolate Cake cupcake with Vanilla Bean buttercream icing. They were beautiful. We got two to go, and the very polite girl working the counter packaged them up in a cute little blue box that reminded me of a Tiffany's box all dressed up for cupcakes. The box had these convenient little "holders" for the cakes so that they would travel nicely. My mother and I went about the rest of our errands and our dinner, making sure to keep the box up-right the entire time. When we got home to devour our tasty treats, we were so disappointed to find out that one of the cupcakes had managed to jump out of its holder and land upside-down directly on top of the other cupcake; a feat that should have been off the charts on the improbability factor since we were so careful with the box. Despite the disaster of their presentation when we began to eat them, we were quite pleased with the flavor and the texture. The dense flourless cupcake was moist and excellently chocolaty. My mother's only comment was "They used real butter." Which to her is a horrible mistake, but I can assure you many people will be happy to know that there was no artificial butter-like ingredient used in THESE cakes! I was thrilled! Initially I was downtrodden that the beautiful buttercream swirl was mostly all over the inside of the box now, but I quickly found that perhaps the icing to cake ratio would have been a bit much had our cupcakes not committed suicide on each other. While the buttercream frosting was lovely, light, and had a terrific flavor, I think that there might have just been a tad too much icing for the dense flourless cake if I had eaten the cupcake immediately when I purchased it. Additionally, I'm not accustomed to having a flourless cake be "iced." I certainly look forward to going back to try some of the other flavors that the other reviewers have talked about! I recommend this place if you're out and about and looking for a good sugar shot!

I don't really get the whole cupcake craze in general, but this place is right next to my salon so I tried it out. The cupcakes are pretty and there's an interesting variety. The frosting is decent, but unfortunately not good enough to make up for the dry, crumbly, and rather tasteless cake underneath.

  • Joe L.

I have tried cupcakes from one end of the United States to the other. Personally, I found the cake to be dry, the flavor weak and the decoration poor. Even though this place is local, considering the price, I won't be going back.

  • Aisha N.

The red velvet is decent when I need a red velvet fix, not too dry and the frosting is good but you're probably better off with many of the other cupcake places in DC. Too bad - I live down the street and I had higher hopes. It's worth it to drive to Georgetown! The cupcakes are the same price as other places too. Some of them just are dry and not on the same level as other places.

The cupcake I ate was absolutly delicious!!! "Actually dipped" made from light and fluffy batter with butter cream frosting then dipped in chocolate ganash was perfect before my movie! A cute little blue square made of fondent was the perfect touch. Friendly staff offers you "shots" of milk with a friendly smile. Wonderfully delightful.

Bland...actually. Yeah, the decor is nice but i'm not paying to see the decor. The cupcakes are cute lookin' but aside from the icing the cupcake itself is pretty tasteless. Also, the cupcake is about the size of my thumb. The cost ranges about 3-4 dollars per cupcake depending on what kind. The flourless-gluten free choco cupcake tasted nutin like choco, left a bitter taste in my mouth. The coconut and mint was okay, again not much taste. Overall, friendly service and clean, but I'll will get my sugar-rush elsewhere.

Tasty little things with one flaw. Too small! If you are like me and are accustomed to the cupcake goodness found in NYC at such landmarks as Crumbs and Magnolia Bakery, you will be disappointed by the small-homemade size of these. Cool decor. Great location. Overdue in Fairfax. I really want to buy them bigger pans and ask for a redo.

Dipped is the way to go here! Chocolate Peanut Butter was heavenly. It was a nice change from frosted cupcakes. I love the variety, too. One strong suggestion: TRY THE CAKE BITES! I had one in my car and almost drove off the road. Tasted like cake batter dipped in chocolate. A treat for those who love rawness of goo (i.e. cookie dough). Need to trek back out there.

I dragged my husband to Cupcakes Actually to pick up some cupcakes for my birthday. I originally did not want to come to this place because I saw their website and they only had a few cupcakes for their line up of the week. I was looking for a variety, however the place I wanted to go was closed on Mondays. I do not like going to businesses that are closed on Mondays, you never know when you will get a craving. Anyway, this place was delicious. I tried the flourless chocolate and was apprehensive at first, when I say that was the best damn cupcake I have ever had, I mean it. It was moist chocolaty and freaking awesome. I also tried the chocolate fudge and I am trying to convince myself not to back and eat the 2nd one I brought. I definitely recommend this place. One last note, I can't say anything about their frostings because to me I am all about the cake and if you can eat a cake without frosting then you know they did a good job.

My boyfriend and his friends had been here multiple times in one week, so I decided I needed to try it out. And it really was that good. The vanilla bean cupcake was amazing, and the chocolate dipped one was pretty awesome, too. I'd like to try the red velvet at some point. I would give this 5 stars but something in me just rebels against paying $7 for two cupcakes...

I'm not sure what some of the other reviews are talking about regarding the management because I have had only great experiences! I first tried this place a couple of years ago and even though I live in San Diego, I eat here every time I am in NoVa visiting family. All of the "actually dipped" cupcakes are great. I have tried several different flavors and have never had a bad one! Also, my sister ordered special "nurse" themed cupcakes for my bday and they toppings were sooooo cute! (thermometer, pills, bandaid, nurses' cap, etc...) I love this place!

Holy cupcakes. My roommate got a dozen cupcakes as a tip from one of her customers and brought them home for the house to share. The first one I picked had a fresh slice of lime on the top, I guessed it was Key Lime Pie. The frosting had depth, not just a light, airy sugary blob like the cupcases of my youth, but it was thick and decadent with bits of lime in it. The cake itself was fluffy, moist, and also had bits of lime. I was in love!! I tried also the red velvet, which was delicious. I ate 3 in one sitting and wanted more! The tragedy was that we left the box on the table and our dog apparently shared our view on how amazing they were, because she helped herself to 4 of them!!! It's a good thing we love her. I went back on my own, hoping to try the Margaritaville cupcake I saw on the online menu, but they were out, so I got the peach. It was sooo good. I have to stay far away from this place, because if I don't I'll end up gaining 500 pounds in a month!

ok, first I must admit I have never had Georgetown Cupcakes! That being said, i found Cupcakes actually pretty darn good. I bought a variety of cupcakes for a party including the black/white dipped, Peanut butter dipped and the coconut cupcakes. I got a chance to try the two dipped ones which were yummmmy, especially if you like lots of frosting. The Peanut butter dipped was my fave..choclate cupcake with peanut butter icing dipped in chocolate...yummmmm. I will definaly have to go back!

I was really excited to go into this cute shop. I selected a couple of cupcakes to that my friends and I could sample a few and I have to say I was really disappointed in them. They were dry and didn't taste fresh. We have grocery stores that have excellent bakeries and I think what they have is better tasting and less expensive.

I have become a bit of a cupcake snob due to this place. By far the best cupcakes I have EVER had. I drive a half hour from my home in Manassas for these cupcakes when ever I can Vs going to the cupcake place in downtown Manassas....they are simply THAT good!

I think Cupcakes Actually holds it's own in the realm of the other DC area cupcake stores. I got 4 cupcakes here the other day. My coconut cupcake was divine (but a bit messy), and my 7 year old daughter ate all of her dipped black & white instead of just eating the icing. That in itself is a huge compliment!

Cupcakes possibly...after 5pm....went here the first time and there were hardly any cupcakes to choose from..just vanilla bean and a coconut. Came back today at 4 and I was relieved to find a bigger variety. Tried the red velvet and the dipped strawberry!! As expected the cupcakes were great..Will be back in the future. P.S wish the customer sevice was better..also look at your receipt after..was charged for an extra cupcake I ddint have or want.

I noticed Cupcakes Actually while getting some froyo at the Pinkberry next door. My big weakness for cupcakes prevented me from leaving without at least stopping in "to look." And then, of course, I had to have one. I ordered the vanilla bean, which they packaged up in a pretty little box made specifically to hold a single cupcake. Fancy. Probably part of the reason why each cupcake is upwards of $3. The cupcake itself, though, was surprisingly very moist and evidently fresh, contrary to what a number of other reviewers here have experienced. Maybe the key is going there on a bustling Saturday morning? It was also very flavorful, without the frosting being overly sweet or rich, which is unfortunately all too common at cupcake shops. Even my husband and cousin liked it, and they're not usually big fans of cupcakes. If I lived close by in Fairfax, I could see myself becoming a regular here. Being closer to DC, though, I wouldn't go out of my way all the way to Fairfax for it, as there are other just-as-good-if-not-better options that are closer.

Agrees with JK. The flourless chocolate was somewhat greasy and left a not-so-nice taste in my mouth. Maybe it's an artificial sweetener? I also got a raspberry one and it was good. BUT for a $3-4 cupcake, there are better and bigger ones elsewhere. Parking around the location is horrendous, too.

I tried Cupcakes Actually today at lunch. The store front is quaint and lovely. Sorta like a cute tea shop. There one tall table and two stools inside. Very clean. The cupcakes vary in price ($3.05-$4.00). There were about 6-8 different selections. First, let me say that I've been to several cupcake shops in the metro area and I think these are quite overpriced. But considering the location, I bet they knew people would pay for them. I ordered a Margaritaville cupcake which is essentially key lime flavoring with infused tequila. The icing is very light, whipped. Almost like marshmallow frosting. It's not particularly flavorful. On first taste there's a small key lime bite, but it quickly disappears and you mostly taste oil or butter. Not particularly sweet. The cake is somewhat dense, but a little on the dry side. As I stuck my fork in for a bite, the piece crumbled a bit and fell apart. Together the cupcake and the icing are okay, but lakcluster. I'm wondering if the flourless chocolate cupcake was any better tasting. Based on the key lime I had, I would say save your money and find Curbside Cupcakes in DC or Georgetown Cupcakes. Even Cake Love in Fair Oaks would be better.

Yes, I still think this place is amazing... I just realized how awful my review was before and decided to add on since I went yesterday. I still think these cupcakes are the best around. The price is a little high, but it is def on point with other area bakeries. Quite frankly, I have no problem paying for quality and that is what you will get here. I've tried various flavors (strawberry, banana, flourless chocolate, almond, champagne, chocolate dipped chocolate) and I have to say my favorite is the banana. All the cupcakes I have had were moist, not overly sugar and true to their flavors. The icing is plentiful (which is always a plus for me!!) and compliments the cupcake, rather then distracts from it's flavor. One thing I was particularly pleased with this time around was the sample cupcakes they had for everything to try. It was the cutest little cupcake and a really nice way to help promote flavors! I will go back... repeatedly... and can't wait to try every flavor they have!

I don't know what some of these negative reviewers are smoking. Crack probably. These are the most fantastic store-bought cupcakes I've ever eaten. If they were vegan I would still be eating them all the time - and likely heading straight towards Diabetes (re: 4 stars). However, all joking aside, I know people's tastes differ greatly, especially when it comes to sweets. I am not a cupcake snob, but I hate Cake Love with a passion. I *am* a sugar addict, though, born and raised (on the playground is where I spent most of my days). These cupcakes ARE moist! Deliciously so! And the frosting is. to. die. for. I've had Actually Dipped Chocolate, Actually Dipped Black and White, Flourless Chocolate, Strawberry Fields, Vanilla Bean, Champagne Taste, and Death by Chocolate. For my palate, Black and White, Champagne Taste, and Death by Chocolate are the best. The carrying containers are aesthetically appealing - like a Tiffany's bag for baked goods - but the inserts DO NOT PREVENT CUPCAKE FAILS. Just carry the box gingerly, guard with your life, until you get home. These are delicate cakecups of sugary sweet joy. I wouldn't balk at the price - money is no object when it comes to happiness.

After tasting cakelove, I have officially embarked on the search for the perfect cupcake. Cupcakes actually definitely is not it. Their frosting is so fake, it tastes like Crisco, and the chocolate they use to dip the tops is so thick, it overwhelms the whole taste of the cupcake. The actual cake part is not better either, they use a pound cake base that tastes like some of the best pound cake I have tasted, but who used pound cake for cupcakes????? Its too heavy! cupcakes by definition are small treats that should not make you feel like you just ate a whole cake. Cupcakes Actually totally misses the boat on creating a tasty, and light cupcake that would tempt me to come back again. I gave them two stars because their shop is airy and sparkling with its newness.

I'm not really a huge fan of cupcakes, but I do have a sweet tooth... and I must say, their cupcakes are heavenly! The flourless chocolate cupcake is the best; very rich and fudgey, the icing is yummy too and light enough to go well with the cupcake's rich taste and texture. I have not tried many of their other flavors but this and the lemon flavored one I had were SO GOOD that I just had to write a review for them. I am curious to try some of their holiday cupcakes, they looked so cute on the website but never got around to going during the holiday season. Maybe they will have new ones this year...

they still need to perfect the actual cupcake itself but they do a very good job on the different icing flavors.

I definitely expected more from this place. I felt that I could have made cupcakes from a box better than what they had to offer For the price per cupcake I was definitely expecting much more.

The cupcakes were tasty enough, but for the same price you can get bigger ones of the same quality elsewhere in the area. The nice touch here as far as I'm concerned is the frosting. I normally can't stand buttercream because it is usually really heavy and buttery, but here they seem to whip more air into it so it stays lighter and softer. Next time we have dinner at Fairfax Towne Center we'll stop in for dessert, but if I'm driving somewhere for cupcakes I'll go to Edibles Incredible or Crumbs.

I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote this last review. Cupcakes Actually is hands down the best cupcake places in the NOVA area. Their combinations are unique and original. Icing is just right and their cake is not dry like some over hyped places like *ahem* Georgetown Cupcake.....I was actually tempted to pick up a cupcake from here today, but I've been eating pretty unhealthy lately. My favorite cupcakes are the Italian Stallion which is filled with cassata, umm yum! Golden Nugget...I'm allergic to walnuts, but this is so worth it. I eat the cupcake with my epi pen next to me..ha! and last but not least, the Cuckoo for Coconut...drool!!! Yeah, the cupcakes are kinda pricey...but after trying other places, I'd much rather go here!

My wife brought home some cupcakes from Cupcakes Actually and they were actually awful. As others have said, the cake was dry and the frosting tasted like doctored Redi-Whip. Also, 3 tiny cupcakes for 10 bucks? Are you F'ng kidding me? These things were forgettable to awful, and each one went into the trash after just two trial bites. Save your cash and go elsewhere... Actually.

Well Cupcakes Actually...I'm not sure I get the name but the cupcakes were pretty darn good. Customer service is lacking. Could have a little more personality. You are selling cupcakes...I thought they are suppose to fun and exciting. Well, I had the strawberry chocolate dipped cupcake and the Caribbean cupcakes. Both were moist and had alot of flavor. This was my second visit. First visit went a little something like this...in I walk around 7pm...a blank stare from the employee... look at the case and they only have coconut and vanilla. That day is was cupcakes maybe hehehehe. They redeemed themselves this previous visit and had everything in stock before 7pm. Will try them again!

$3.75 for a small, dry cupcake? Never again. Yes, they are beautifully decorated and pretty but the flavor and texture just aren't there. The cake is dry and the frosting tasted like Cool Whip.

I really like their cupcakes - they are really moist and pretty. The vanilla ones almost taste like sugar cookies; they are so good. They are decorated very nicely and are very appealing. They have a lot of fun varieties of flavors too. They are a bit pricey, but they often run living social or groupons so I always get them at a discount and that makes it worth it.

Can you say Chic? This probably one of the cutest stores in the Fairfax mall. The adorable blue tile and cute counter top is unreal! Love the see through glass in front of the cupcakes. Let's start off with my favorite one, the flour-less chocolate cupcake. It is so decadent and rich, taste almost like a fudgey brownie. I truly enjoyed it. The bumpy cupcakes are all delicious, I can choose which one I like more the chocolate, vanilla, or peanut butter. I guess you will just have to try them all to figure it out yourself. The cake taste moist and fresh every time I have ever been there. Never had a "dry" cake issue, but I don't dissect my cupcake, I just eat it and enjoy it. The cupcakes cost from $3-$4 a piece, not bad for gourmet. And as always you buy 5 you get the 6th one free! The shop also sells gorgeous custom made cakes if you like, when I was there they were bringing 200 cupcakes to a wedding that look absolutely adorable! I am sure the bride and groom will love them. They also started making "cupcake bites" it is their cupcake flavors dipped in white or milk chocolate, with some kind of sprinkle on top. Those were just awesome, my top suggestion is never buy just one of those cupcake bites, it will take at least 2 of them to satisfy you. You can buy their very sleek white designed aprons, hot tea, or coffee to go with your cupcake. Also don't forget their signature packaging. The custom boxes that hold the cupcakes are just perfect, they have ones that fit 6 cupcakes, 4, 2, or an individual. Be prepared though when you go in the summer, if you have a drive then bring a cooler, the cupcakes are delicate and don't to well to the Fairfax heat! So next time you are in the area or just shopping at the outdoor mall, stop by because you won't be disappointed and your sweet tooth will definitely be fulfilled! Go to cupcakesactually.com and check them out and order some today!

When I get a cupcake, I want it to have presence, to make itself known. I don't want a fluffy cake-like object that gets eaten through before you can blink. Those are wimp cupcakes. Those are cupcakes that lack self respect and are afraid to live up to their potential. Those are cupcakes I want nothing to do with. The cupcakes from Cupcakes Actually have the kind of character and depth that requires you to sit up and take notice. These are heavy duty cupcakes that require deft hands to handle the large cupcake plus delicious toppings. These are not for the faint of heart and require a commitment on the part of the eater. As other people have mentioned, the actually hand dipped options are excellent. I am personally a big fan of the flourless chocolate cupcake and devil's food cupcake. I also appreciate that they have a rotating selection of cupcakes, never letting their menu get stale but also preserving some favorites. I have also found that the cupcakes taste is enhanced by refrigerating them for a few hours or a day. Not sure why, but cold cupcakes with a nice tall glass of milk is just plain perfect. While the cupcakes are a bit pricey, they are worth every bite.

My wife brought home two of their cupcakes Friday night, the Turtle and the Actually Dipped Peanut Butter. The cupcakes are slightly smaller than other boutique cupcake places but they more than made up for it in their execution. Both cupcakes were dipped in chocolate which covered the buttercream frosting on top (pretty cool) but the buttercream frosting underneath was amazing- it was flavorful and very light. Both were really, really good. The PB one was just a chocolate cake but the Turtle was a pecan flavored cake (very good) and was filled with caramel- man I love caramel. I could fill just about anything with caramel and I would love it but this umm...took the cake... (yea I just said that). As for the price- I'm not sure what anyone was expecting. Look at their location, do you have any idea what their overhead must be in that shopping center? I have Hello Cupcake across the street from my office in DC and I'd take "Actually" over them any day. My only complaint is that they don't seem to switch up their weekly cupcakes often enough, they have way too many cupcake varieties to have the same flavors so frequently. I actually prefer how Hello has a daily menu of their different flavors. Anyway, really good cupcakes.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this cupcake place!!! I have been here numerous times since it's right around the corner from my work. And you know nothing brightens up a bad work day than a lovely little piece of heaven. Who doesn't LOVE cupcakes? If you don't, there is definitely something wrong with you. I have had the amazing Peppermint Chocolate, Gingersnap and Pumpkin Spice and others...all so good! They are masters of decorating them - they are so cute with the toppings like for the holidays they had a Grinch cupcake with a grinch hat and the flavor was pistacio. They are very creative and they look beautiful. They are also not very heavy more on the lighter side - very moist and fluffy and the frosting is not overwhelmingly buttery or sweet. A good balance. I am going go today Actually!

I love their cupcakes. The icing is very different, melt in your mouth sort of, and I can see some people not liking it, but with the cake part it is perfect. I absolutey love the Razzmatazz, Italian Stallian, Dipped Chocolate salted caramel, and Caramel Delight. Also good are the Irish Cream Cake, Danny Boy, and Ginger Pear. Vanilla is alright. So is Strawberry, but you can't beat Georgetown cupcake's Strawberry. The lemon cupcake is a bit too much for me and probably the only one that I would definitely not get again. A little pricey and a couple of times I have gotten one that seemed stale which is def. not acceptable for over $3. However, I'm addicted and will always return.

I wanted some cupcakes for my birthday (Italian Stallion), my husband tried to order 6. Cupcakes Actually told him it was a non baking week for that flavor and made him buy 24. I didn't want chocolate chips on the top of the cupcakes, so instead of doing what I wanted, they put the chips inside the filling of the cupcakes. The cupcakes were hard and stale, even though they were a "special order". The folks there were not accommodating, and in my husbands words "difficult to deal with, and seemed to have issues with the entire order". He paid for them in total in advance and was supposed to pick them up around noon on Friday. Just after 12:00, they started calling him having a fit that the cupcakes weren't picked up yet. I had one cupcake just passing by one afternoon, and it was an Italian Stallion. It was yummy. What Cupcakes Actually provided in the special order for my birthday didn't even seem to come from the same business. Will never buy form them passing buy or for an occasion. Customer lost!

Cupcakes Actually is a great little place to get a sweet treat. The beautifully designed cupcakes are not just pretty to look at, but great in taste, texture and all around greatness. Unlike some other reviewers, I have not once come across a dry cupcake. I appreciate this location because unlike some other cupcakeries, they keep their supply up and fresh. If I walk in mid-day I know they are still going to have my favorite red velvet. I also know there won't be a line down the street. Popularity indeed drives a business, but massive lines are not worth my time. In addition, they rotate their options weekly. You can locate their current selections on the website, which also includes full descriptions and pictures of their cupcakes. Their website is kept up to date as is their facebook page, another huge plus. If you supply them with your email you will get updates on sales and promotions. Are they pricey? Yes. Are they any more pricey than other cupcake locations? No. Does this stop me from going several times a month? Not in the very least.

Mouth watering deliciousness! I didn't know whether to go with the classic chocolate, the renound Red Velvet, or the divine daily specials! My advice is to try them all :D you won't be dissapointed :)

    (5)
  • Jennifer J.

Expensive in comparison to other cupcake places I have been to, and many of their cupcakes are just bad (for example, when they had the 'The Italian Stallion' the cupcake was dry and the icing was too gross to eat). The flour less chocolate, however, is worth the visit. Super moist and rich!

1.5 stars (only bc at least I didn't have to wait for my cupcake to defrost like some places which will rename nameless *ahem*) Still disappointed nonetheless. I came here when they first opened and I remember their cupcakes being very dry. I know all too well that cupcakes can be somewhat inconsistent so I could have possibly came during some bad batches, but my bff and cupcake eating partner-in-crime got a few just the other day and told me they were still pretty blah.

I was disappointed after all I'd heard about Cupcakes Actually, but everyone has different tastes they prefer. To me, these were okay cupcakes, but not very moist. There was a decent variety of flavors, but nothing that inspires me to return. The chocolate-dipped cupcakes are great and a unique offering though; I say that's worth a visit once . . . unless other cupcake places start doing this, then you might as well go elsewhere.

I have bought cupcakes from here on two occasions and have not been impressed. The cakes are small, dry, and crumbly and not very flavorful. The frostings are somewhat better, but could have stronger flavor. Not worth the price. I would rather have cupcakes from Giant.

Ok. As promised, I went back to Cupcakes Actually to try out some more flavors, and I even brought a friend in order to help with the judging process :) We got four different flavors this time, and I once again used my 15% student discount, which really made a difference when it came to the price. Always a plus when buying expensive little cupcakes. There were so many tempting options but the four we settled on were Simply Red (red velvet with cream cheese frosting), Cuckoo for Coconut (with vanilla butter cream frosting and sprinkled with shaved coconut), Caramel Delight (brown sugar infused vanilla cupcake filled with caramel and vanilla butter cream frosting), and the Actually Dipped Dark Cherry Chocolate. As usual, the presentation was flawless, making the cupcakes almost too cute to eat. We did anyway. The cupcakes were so good there was actually a three-way tie for first place given the fact that we loved the coconut, cherry, and caramel equally. The weak link was definitely the red velvet. Its cream cheese frosting tasted more like plain cream than anything. The cake was unimpressive and kind of bland as well. But the quality of the other three cupcakes more than made up for Red Velvet's under-performance, happily earning Cupcakes Actually five stars. Don't be surprised to see another cupcake update coming soon!

I consider myself a cupcake connoisseur, favoring Sprinkles (from Beverly Hills) the most. So if you don't like Sprinkles, then you may like this place. I've gone twice. The first time was in the middle of the day, and the cupcake was dry, which I attributed to the fact that it was probably made that morning. Too much money to spend on something supposedly gourmet that ends up disappointing. The second time, I returned because I thought my first experience was probably an unfortunate one-off bad thing. Not true. This place is better left untouched.

The WORST, don't even waste your $3.05 because the cupcake are sooooooo dry. I'm originally from NYC and have been craving CRUMBS (FYI, they will be in the DMV area this Summer) Cupcakes and I saw "Cupcakes Actually's" add in last months "Northern Virginia Mag" and decided I wanted to try, take my word for it and everyone else's and be aware.

The cupcakes are pretty to look at but flavorless. I have the double chocolate with ganache and butter cream frosting. the cake is actually very nice the crumb is good but the cake itself is flavorless as is the frosting

I've never actually been to Cupcakes Actually but after a friend brought a box of 6 to sample among four of us, I was satisfied but not wowed. I like Georgetown Cupcake and Red Velvet and I'm a huge fan of Baked & Wired, and Cupcakes Actually falls somewhere close to my list of "likes" but not ones that I'll rave about. Their lemon cupcake, though not normally a flavor I would buy, was surprisingly good - it had a very distinct lemon flavor that reminded me of a lemon meringue pie with the right amount of tartness and sweetness. I enjoyed their dipped confections even more, possibly because I'm a huge chocolate fan and possibly because I like the idea of a cupcake with creamy frosting, then covered with chocolate ganache on top. The peanut butter dipped was especially tasty, being that peanut butter and chocolate go so well together. Their red velvet, or "Simply Red," fell below par compared to red velvets I've had at other bakeries. It looked cute with it's little red heart on top but the cake looked more pink than red and had no distinctive taste. The frosting on this one is supposed to be cream cheese, but it had more of a buttercream taste was fairly lackluster. I'd say Cupcakes Actually is not bad among the hoards of cupcakeries here in the DC metro area, but if you have the option to get your cakes elsewhere, I'd suggest so, as other places prove to be worth it for the distance and money.

Maybe I am over cupcakes. Maybe the mint frosting/chocolate cake combo wasn't for me. Maybe the lame 25 cent milk "shot" didn't win me over. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for a cupcake. I don't know, for me today this place was just a-ok.

The banana cupcake was okay, the red velvet was pretty awesome, but I still like Georgetown cupcakes version better. The flourless chocolate cupcake is AMAZING though. Super intense chocolate cupcake. Very rich and TDF.

I was in New York a few weeks ago and finally went to Magnolia Bakery. I was totally disappointed. Today, I followed the "cupcake" signs to Cupcakes Actually. Wow. This is a cupcake. The frosting is not too sweet. It is light and creamy. I bought five and got one free. They are in the other room and it is taking all of my self control to not eat the other 5.

This is a cute little cupcake shop in the busy town center of Fairfax. However let's get down the the cupcake. Ugh, I rather have my 6 year old cousin whip me up some. The cake seemed dry and heavy. More like a pound cake than a fluffy moist cake. I am not a fan of the frosting either. For a sweet treat it tasted rather bland and the texture of the frosting was thick. Plus I think they charge a little more than other cupcake shops.

Last Saturday hubby and I had some time to kill before our dinner reservation, and seeing as we were both starving decided to stop in Cupcakes Actually and have our dessert first. The flourless chocolate cupcake was so good! Rich, moist, reminded me of the chocolate pudding cake thing Legal Seafoods makes. Smart of them to put whipped cream on it instead of frosting, seeing how the cupcake is so rich. Hubby got the raspberry cupcake, and loved it. Cake was moist and tart, and the frosting wasn't too sweet. Only reason they don't get five stars is because the banana cupcake was too dense and tasted more like banana bread, plus the frosting was grainy and didn't taste like rum which was advertised.

Five stars for a fun concept in Fairfax Corner! Spending time flipping through Northern Virginia Yelp reviews is a pretty depressing activity: we need places more creative and interesting than, say, the top-ranked Chipotle (incidentally, right across the street). The location is a tiny store with a glass counter filled with the day's cupcakes. When I came by, there were pistachio-flavored ones, chocolate-covered ones, and more-- we sat down at the single table up along the window and split a gingerbread cupcake with tasty buttercream icing. Prices are just fine for such a sweet treat: $3 - 4 for a cupcake. (What the heck is up with those $0.25 milk shots, though?) Will be back if I find myself in need of a cozy little dessert!

This cutsey little cupcake shop is good. I'd have these cupcakes over CakeLove anyday. The girls were super nice and the decor is.. you know...cute. I bought 6.. buy 5 and get the 6th free.. for $17. Not that bad. I had the strawberry, key lime, red velvet, a vanilla bean two chocolates.. that I didn't get to try. The strawberry didn't have much of a strawberry taste, but the frosting was light and not too sweet. The key lime cupcake, is my favorite, it had a nice refreshing zest to it, and again not too sweet. Red velvet, wasn't that "red" and there wasn't enough richness that I like in a red velvet. The cake may look on the dry side, but it's suprisingly moist.. def a plus. I do like the frosting here on all of the cupcakes I tried. It didn't have the powdery sugar taste in your mouth.. you know, the kind of gritty taste... and it was light and complemented cake well... another plus. Also, frosting is not too sweet.. a double plus!

I'm eating the Strawberry Fields cupcake as I type and it's a damn good Cupcake, Actually... I walked in with my bud and immediately noticed the inviting / trendy decor and the welcoming smile of the young lady behind the counter. She was quick to point out the free, and very sizeable, sample of their almond cupcake. I was instantly taken aback- moist cupcake? CHECK room temp? CHECK not too sweet? CHECK quality ingredients? CHECK As I peered behind the glass enclosure, I found myself wanting more than one cupcake to take home. My friend had already decided on 6, so I decided to do the same and we were given a 15% discount... SWEET! Overall, I had a great experience and will most definitely return.

The cupcakes are OK, but the service is horrible! Very condescending and rude staff. I'm not going back to this place again, no matter how much sugar they put in their cupcakes the BAD service will leave a sour taste in your mouth.

Finally went into the 'actual' Cupcakes Actually shop and was lucky enough to be there for the strawberry fields cupcake. This cupcake alone gets 5 stars. It tasted like strawberry heaven in my mouth! This was also right before the fourth of July and they had a vanilla bean cupcake served with a sparkler which was pretty cool. My only complaint is that I wish there was more seating outside or any seating inside. These cupcakes are not good traveling cupcakes and if it's a nice day out you'll be lucky to get a seat outside to enjoy it fresh!

Cupcakes are too dry... Maybe they were old? I don't know... I only tried it once and decided that they were not worth the calories. I really like gtown cupcakes much more. Just get some frozen yogurt from next door.

I had to run a few errands in the neighborhood last Friday and well...sugar always make errands more fun, so I had to stop in for a few cupcakes. They had 8 flavors out that day so I got a chocolate dipped and a red velvet. I was not a fan of the red velvet, the cake was dry and lacked any real flavor, the frosting was okay but it wasn't good enough to redeem it. The chocolate dipped cupcake was actually moist and had some flavor to the cake. I liked it but it really is so rich you need to split it. The gals working in the store were pretty friendly and helped give me directions to the next place on my to do list. It's worth a stop if you just have to have a cupcake, but I'd probably just go blow my money on the pastries at Wegmans instead ;)

I love their cupcakes! They are always moist and tasty! My office gets them periodically so I've been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to try a few different flavors. The dipped ones are amazing! Always great service and food. Only complaint is that we always want more after we've finished them all at the office! Haha!

I may bump this up to a 4 or 5 star review if I can close the deal. Cupcakes are a great way to get your foot in the door. Who can't refuse a box of beautiful tasty treats? Or let me put it this way... who can't accept a box of beautiful tasty treats and then kick you out of the office? Exactly. A box of cupcakes, combined with a personal note and a request for a more formal, sit down meeting has turned into a promising phone call this morning from an office I am prospecting. I'm trying to figure out if its because of how good the cupcakes tasted, or the fantastic products I represent. Hmmmm. Perhaps I just write good notes. From my perspective, the coconut cupcake was very tasty. Although the frosting was a bit too sweet for my taste, and just a tad too much as well, the toasted coconut added a nice, chewy dimension to the dessert. I am very interested in coming back to try the dipped cupcakes... those looked very intriguing. If I can close this account... I'll have every reason to be back to frequent the Fairfax area and cupcakes always keep customers very happy!! I was also thrilled to receive 15% off of my large order :)

Fantastic. Everyone who works there is kind and helpful, they know what they're talking about. The cupcakes themselves are delicious (Peanut Butter all the way), they never taste old or stale. Prices are very worth it too, you'd think $3.5+ for a cupcake is a lot but just wait until you try one, or two, or like.... four.

I tried a couple of their cupcakes - chocolate espresso something or other and a red velvet I believe. Delicious, plain and simple. Moist cake, decadent frosting which wasn't too sweet nor did it leave that odd, greasy aftertaste that some other cupcakes have done. As is often the case, the odd cupcake calculus on price vs. value comes up. Yes, these little gems are pricey. Yes, the cupcakes are small. Yes, I found myself wondering if I should order a 3rd - which would have put me into the double digit $$$ category. Alas, I needed to stimulate REI down the street more ... P.S. Can someone please make muffincakes instead of cupcakes?!? Like cupcakes the size of those ginormous muffins I see at coffee shops? Only moist. With frosting. How much can cupcake batter and frosting cost? Seriously!?! KTHXBYE.

So after an afternoon at the spa, there is nothing that sounded better than a cupcake. So we headed down to the newest addition to the new cupcake place at fairfax corner, cupcakes actually. And Actually... they kinda suck. The cake i tried was a double chocolate dipped cupcake. The cake was dry, the icing was ok, but the dipping?? It really was hard to determine tastes because of the fudge on top. It really kinda messed up the whole thing. And was WAY too much chocolate. Of their 5 offerings, 3 were dipped! I would have tried another but at 3.75 for a SMALL (like seemed smaller than my normal ones), i didn't have the funds. The red velvet did look good and was impressively decorated, but i didn't try cause i was too annoyed If you look at their website, the samplings look a lot better so i wish they had had some of the others. You will also note that they are self proclaimed cupcake snobs. Well besides being overpriced and their restaurant considered to be a boutique, i would not consider their cupcakes "snob worthy". I would consider Alicia G. or Julie H and a snob and their cupcakes actually taste good!

Cute atmosphere. The cupcakes range from about $3 to $4. They are rather small, but the flavor is okay. I was actually looking forward to trying the strawberry fields and the coconut cupcakes but they weren't available for this week. The lady told me they rotate the flavors weekly, she gave me a menu but it doesn't state the weeks for each flavor which sucks. I had the red velvet cupcake, the cake was okay, nothing special, actually kind of dry. The frosting was nice and fluffy. I also tried the Actually Dipped Chocolate, it was pretty good. I would actually get that again. My husband had the rasberry cupcake, he really loved that. I would actually like to go back and try this place again. Hopefully I'll go on a day where they have strawberry and the coconut cupcakes.

People, people, people. Look at the headline next to my name ("Chubby Girl Unsurprisingly Refuses to Skip Dessert") and judge for yourselves whether I am qualified to make the following declaration: Cupcakes Actually has the BEST cupcakes in the area. Yes, I've had Georgetown Cupcake (bland and disappointing). Yes, I've had Sprinkles (dense and sat like a load of concrete on the tummy). Yes, I've had CakeLove (aka CakeCrap). I am an avid cupcake tester, and, trust me, this is the place for you. I've never had a dry cupcake from here unless I put it in the fridge and ate it the next day. The Red Velvet cupcake is a great standby, but my absolute favorite is the flourless chocolate cupcake. It is literally the most wonderful thing I have ever put in my mouth. I didn't really mean for that to sound dirty. But, seriously, it is the best thing I have ever eaten in my life. Tip: Sometimes they have little cake balls, which are delectable and cheap if you are broke or if you don't feel like eating a ginormous cupcake. Enjoy!

Some friends and I decided to stop by here just out of curiosity. I got the simply red velvet cupcake along with a Hank's gourmet black cherry soda while my friend got a dipped in chocolate cupcake. I felt like my red velvet cupcake prepared without the cocoa powder. The cheesecake frosting was good though. My friend said that Georgetown cupcake is better. The only good thing about this place that will make me come back is the Hank's gourmet soda. They even have milk shots here for 25 cents a shot. I joked with the cashier if it had alcohol in them (white russians!)

Cupcakes Actually is by far my favorite cupcake place in Northern Virginia. Having a major sweet tooth I have certainly tried my fair share of cupcakes. These cupcakes are a little on the expensive side but nothing I wouldn't expect from a cupcake shop in Fairfax Corner. I have only tried a few cupcake flavors; Simply Red, Cherries Jubilee, Vanilla Bean, Dipped Black and White, and Caramel Delight. Well, maybe more than a few. I am not a HUGE fan of loads of buttercream icing which some of these have but overall the cupcakes were moist and flavorful. The Simply Red Cupcake and the Vanilla Bean were classic and yummy. The Cherries Jubilee was good but tasted a little bit artificial and had way too much icing. The dipped black and white was really tasty and the Caramel Delight was super moist and filled with caramel. I will definitely be coming back here time and time again!

I agree with much of Michelle P.'s review - these cupcakes are not much for the money. I actually got a half dozen assorted flavors - which cost $20. I was expecting something ultra fabulous, as these are self-proclaimed cupcake snobs. I was disappointed. The cake was dry, and the buttercream frosting a little too heavy, and in some cases cloying. Overall, I can make a full batch of cupcakes for the price of one from Cupcakes Actually - and they would taste just as good, if not better. I will note that I did enjoy the Cherry Blossom cupcake. I think the canned cherry filling in the batter made it a little more moist.

Some of the most amazing cupcakes I've ever had. I have family and friends that live all over the country and I like to try different cupcakes shops every time I visit a new city. Cupcakes Actually by far as the best in the country. They offer lots of options and have lots of flavor. One of my favorites is the Peanut Butter/Chocolate on they have. It is a chocolate cupcake with peanut butter frosting, then the frosting is dipped in chocolate. If you like a peanut butter and chocolate combo like myself you have to try theirs. Most try! You will keep going back! :)

Ehh at best. We tried the simply red cupcake and it was just ok. If you have tried Sprinkles Red Velvet cupcakes, then the chances are high that you might be disappointed. The store itself is not much bigger than a cupcake but that is about all they need. Everything looks nice and the ladies behind the counter are employees but I don't get the sense that they are vested as though they really care about the well being of cupcakes, actually.

As far as cupcake places go- I think these are smaller, more expensive, but oh.so .good (and immediately edible- no need to wait 20 minutes for something that comes out of the fridge). They post their weekly lineup on the website, so check that before you go. There were 8 or so options and all looked equally yummy. I had the Actually Dipped Peanut Butter. Chocolate cake, peanut butter icing, dipped in a chocolate ganache. Think Reece's cup on steroids.... The cashier asked if I wanted it there or to go, and I said to go. Note, these do NOT travel well in the little Chinese style containers they send you home with. By the time I got to the car, the chocolate ganache had melted a bit all over the edge, and the peanut butter was melting a bit as well. No worries, I totally went at the side of the container w/ a fork when I got home. As for the cupcake, the frosting was a nice mix of sweet, but not too. The cake was moist, and the chocolate ganache provided a nice topping. As for the price, you're paying for a delicacy. Yes, it's smaller than some of the other providers out there, but hey, who needs the extra calories anyway?

I really wanted to like this place. Really. But Georgetown Cupcake still holds my heart. I tried the Simply Red (red velvet) and the Actually Dipped Black and White (vanilla cupcake with vanilla buttercream frosting dipped in chocolate). The Red Velvet was a bit dry and tasted like pound cake. The Black and White was VERY dry and nothing special. It's too bad, because the store is small but very nice. The cupcake presentation is OK - like I said, nothing special.

I have been to bakeries in L.A., Georgetown, Dupont Circle, NYC, and by far this place is garbage. Dry and overbaked cake on the inside. Then try to decorate the outside of the baked good to shield the actual texture on the inside. This was a great place to open up a cupcake joint tho (good choice of location). Right in the middle of yuppy Fairfax Corner with nobody having a clue on what a rich, moist, premier cupcake tastes like. LOL. One of my favorite joints is Baked and Wired in Georgetown, DC. If I want to pay 3-4 bucks for a cupcake, I will travel distances for the goodness instead of convenient disgusting cakes at fairfax corner... BTW Why did they close Sweet Christine's in Fairfax? Place was ten times better!

First, let me start out by saying that I'm not really into baked goods. I'm more of a fanatic of meats and cheeses - if there is such a thing. However, for my boyfriend's birthday, I decided to be part of this cupcake craze that's been taking the nation. (Better cupcakes than the "fro-yo" trend. If I ever refer frozen yogurt as fro-yo, you have my permission to punch me in the face.) I digress....Back to business. My boyfriend is an indiscriminate eater of baked goods. Cookies, cakes, breads, and the like stand no chance when he's around. I think he would be a more appropriate reviewer of these culinary confections as I've seriously been wanting knock your socks off food this weekend, and yet my feet remain clothed. He rates them a 4 out of 5 and says quote ,"I'm not really that into cupcakes, but these are probably some of the best cupcakes I've had... but what do I know, I like everything...I'm a garbage disposal". So, there you have it folks, from the self proclaimed garbage disposal. I do have to say that I am not a fan of frosting. Seriously - for my birthday, I always request vanilla cupcakes with no icing. However, I was pleasantly suprised that the icing on these cupcakes were not overly sweet. Flavors Tried: Flourless Chocolate (very fudgy) Peanut Butter Dipped (very messy) Raspberry (kind of fruity) Vanilla Bean (very classic) It's a great location and the cupcakes are a nice break from the norm.

I have been categorized as a cupcake fanatic. People know this about me and always tell me when they come across something "cupcakey". I was extremely excited when I was told about the cupcake shop in fairfax corner. Many people told me about it so finally I had to check it out. I finally made it out to Fairfax and was so excited to try these cupcakes. When we got to the shop I was very excited at how cute and elegant it was. I think this is the perfect theme for cupcakes; cute and elegant. The cupcakes were decorated beautifully so this heightened my excitement. When I looked at the prices of the cupcakes, I was taken aback because I thought they were quite pricey. They are even more expensive than Georgetown cupcakes! I ended up purchasing cupcakes because they were buy five get one free. I left with my cupcakes and I could not even wait tot get home to try one. I got in my car and tried the red velvet. It was OK. I found that the cupcake was on the dry side and the icing was less than solid. By the end of the cupcake, the icing was sliding off onto my fingers. The taste of the cupcakes were satisfactory, nothing spectacular. I put my box aside and drove home to Manassas- a 25 minute drive from Fairfax. By the time I got home, my cupcakes had melted. The day I got these it was a cool fall day and the interior of my car was about 55-60 degrees. Needless to say I was highly disappointed. I found that the icing on these cupcakes was very runny and greasy. I understand that a lot of butter and oil goes into these cupcakes, but I think there was too much butter in these. Some of the icing even had a transparency to them. I feel like it is really important to have a more solid icing on cupcakes. I feel like cupcakes go through a lot of moving (in and out of boxes) and should be durable enough to withstand that type of travel. Otherwise- I think this company has a great grasp on how a cupcake should look and be presented. I might give this shop one more chance. It is so cute and classy, but my experience was not a pleasant one.

I've been in a hand full of times. The peanut butter have always been good. I just recently tried the OMG, it was tasty as well. However, I was disappointed in my favorite flavor, the red velvet. The cake was dry and the icing was way too sweet. Red Velvet bakery in Reston makes a better red velvet cupcake as does a bakery in Vienna (Sweet City Dessert). I do have to say that Cupcakes Actually uses premium ingredients because the flavors are really good! I would give them 5 stars if they made their cakes more moist and the red velvet icing less sweet!
