Love the food! Love the drinks! For me Zen is neighborhood favorite and I love how the staff always greets people with great smiles and service! I also love that they add some new great choices from time to time. I've never had a meal here that I didn't enjoy.

I went here for HH one time, after doing some research on yelp. I was very impressed by the presentation of this place. There was a full size bar, and a lounge area with comfortable couches parallel from the bar area. I was in the market for a good local sushi place. I can't say that I'm that impressed with the sushi selection. However, the happy hour menu had a lot of great choices. I really liked the dumplings and thai wings. With that being said, I would recommend going here for HH, but that's it. I probably won't be coming back here though.

Originally came here for a friend's birthday celebration. It was a cute place with a bar along the left side and on the right side are tables and a little area with couch/table seating. The waiters were nice as there was a lot of us that came in during different times and ordering. They have a large selection of Asian fusion dishes, but my friends and I ordered sushi and steamed shu mai dumplings. The dumplings were okay. The sushi was alright. It was typical. Nothing that really stood out. The area looks a lot like Fairfax Corner or Reston Towne Center. Right outside of the place is a ice skating rink and a bunch of other stores along the area so you have plenty of choices.

Came here this past Saturday for a girlfriend's birthday dinner and small celebration. Not much has changed from when I used to frequent Zen a few some years ago as it was the spot for sushi and having a low-key evening with a few friends. The place is dimly lit and furnished with booths, couches, and a few counter-top tables. They also have seating available at the bar area. (For more of a sit-down dinner, they have Asia Bistro right next door, I believe it is all owned under the same management.) Our group was huge so we had what seemed like every worker tending to us. They brought our orders out a in a timely manner and were quite accommodating given that more people kept coming in and ordering. They offer a wide variety of Asian-fusion dishes such as pad thai, sushi, teriayki, and so forth. Quality-wise the food here was OK, not my first choice for a sushi restaurant, but it was still good and reasonably priced. Though I must say, they were more than generous with the drinks, every drink ordered was always topped off! The parking lot and garage are located within Pentagon Row surrounded by other restaurants, shops, and an ice-skating rink. The environment has an upscale, yet comfortable feel- I always love walking around this area!

I would not recommend this place unless you're eating here with a groupon or just plan on taking advantage of their happy hour drink special. The food is not impressive. Bulgolgi Bibimbap was $15 as well as the Spicy Chicken Bibimbap. The Bibimbap lacked flavor, the rice was not cooked very well (hard to mess up), Bulgolgi Bibimbap didn't have much Bulgolgi and lacked sesame oil. Both dishes had green beans which I found interesting. Recap: only come here with a groupon or for their fresh ice cold beers on tap which are reasonably priced.

I will have to admit I was pleasantly pleased with the menu that my wife and I had this evening. We had a total of three sushi rolls; salmon roll, spicy tuna, and salmon/asparagus. The sushi roles were very fresh and flavorful. Additionally my wife got the mojito and I had a Chardonnay wine, she was happy with her Mojito. However, I think my wine came from a box...yuck!! For reference check-in here and you receive a 15% off coupon from yelp.

My husband enjoyed his lamb chops and I really liked the healthy and flavorful duck spring rolls. It was a lovely evening dinning outdoors. The service is pleasant and sincere.

This place is worth a try, especially with a Groupon and at happy hour. The HH specials offer some cheap and tasty sushi, you can't really expect gourmet for the price but this was good for the price. The beer selection for HH isn't amazing but does the trick if you want a beer with your sushi or dinner. As for the entrees, the bulgogi bibimbap was enjoyable but a little on the bland side. The beef was lean but a little tough, the green beans could have used a little more seasoning/cooking, and the rice and carrots were as expected. I enjoyed my meal and would try it again (with a Groupon), but would add a little hot sauce next time to perk this up a little. I'd go back here for happy hour or for dinner (if I had a Groupon) since it was pretty good but there are so many restaurants in the area I can't say I'd be back here full fare.

Zen is a pretty cool restaurant. We sat inside and it was pretty nice, and there is also an outdoor seating area. Good location/decor and the service was decent on our visit, but the food was just average. The Thai Chili Wings were fairly good. They weren't as crispy as I would have liked, but they had plenty of flavor, and a pretty good kick. Just a quick note here (and this definitely is not the restaurant's fault) - you probably don't want to order the wings if you are eating sushi, or at least order the sushi first, because after all of that chili you won't be able to taste much else for a little while. After I was able to drink a whole lot of water and clear my palette, the sushi was so-so. I thought the Rainbow Roll was great - the fish was fresh, and everything in the roll tasted good. The salmon avocado and tuna avocado rolls were both pretty unbalanced - they had tons of avocado, which is great if you like avocado, but I only tasted that, instead of the fish.

My husband and I came here with a groupon: $17 for $30 worth of food. It's pretty easy to hit that $30 mark, especially if you order a lot of sushi. My husband and I started with the curry puffs, which were soooo good. His entree was the chicken panang and while I ordered an array of sushi. He enjoyed that his panang had baby corn in it, since we've never had that as an ingredient before. My sushi was very good, and I was pleasantly surprised due to my usual skepticism for asian fusion. I had their spicy tuna roll that was sprinkled in tempura and flash fried. It was incredibly unique, which was mostly a good thing. It tasted great, but I would've preferred if the pieces were smaller. I would've been content with more pieces in a smaller, easier to eat size. All in all, it wasn't a bad experience. I'm not sure if I'd return again without a groupon. It's in very trendy Pentagon Row, which is great but also means either hunt forever for parking, or pay for parking. Also, I think Asia Bistro next door is owned by the same group, so I'm not sure what makes Zen Bistro different from next door...

I love coming to zen at times. I used to come here almost once a week when I lived around. I really like their Pad Thai or Rice in a pot. Today I tried the Grilled Chicken Teriyaki. It was typical chicken teriyaki and what's interesting was that they put side of kimchi which is never the case in any other restaurant. Thankfully I like kimchi; so no problem there. We got into the happy hour and I got the Zen-ojito. It was good nothing to complain there. Also, spring roll (2pieces) for happy hour as well. I would say the waiter/waitress was not really attentive. I've had my water glass empty for a while. Oh well! Overall, good place to hang out and meet people.

Great sushi and awesome service. My husband and I used an expired groupon and we ordered so much more than we expected. The sushi was too fishy for his taste so we had to order a chicken Lo Mein which he devoured! We got the calamari, which was a delicious meal on its own that came on a bed of greens. I think I'll order the Calamari as an entre for myself next time. We tried the spider roll and shrimp tempura rolls which were good if it weren't for the fishy smell due to the avocado in both rolls (in my opinion)....

Nice place in side very relaxing and the food is not bad. The service was a little poor! The Rock and Roll Sushi was tasty and so was the steamed dumpling. The Yellow Noodle Soup was OK but it was no where close to PHO. I was here last year when it was called something else and it was better then. Remember to eat well and live well! And please no chains!

Bad food bad service especially they have 2 restaurant( share 1 kitchen) two separate entrance with 2 separate name. Slow service and one short guy there is so hard to understand. They serve me little less than warm curry and so call Japanese food looked Korean. they are just bad all the way around.

Lot of dissatisfied people on this page. I like it enough. It has a good atmosphere and good service. The food was good enough for me.

The ONLY redeeming thing about this place was the sweet and attentive waiter. The appetizer (duck in paper thin wrapping) and sushi were horrible. Really, really bad and tasteless. We didn't even finish ours, not because we weren't hungry but just because it was that bad. It was several steps down from the already-mediocre place that is near where I live in Queens NYC, but at least the place in Queens is cheap. This place was double the price (at least).

Warning: This review is all over the place. There is no order to it. I would edit it but I'm a little hungover. I was here last night to meet up with some friends at a professionals group happy hour. It has a prime location in Pentagon Row. The bar has a very modern interior, which always pleases me. I was very impressed with the selection of liquor. I was surprised because I expected a lot of wines and few beers and liquors, but I was wrong. The staff was very accommodating. I never had to wait very long when I needed another drink. When I first arrived at the bar, the manager was actually the one to take my drink order. She was kind enough to extend happy hour an additional hour for our group. The staff even moved some tables out of the way when more of our group showed up. There was a beer, wine, and sangria special for the happy hour. I could see they had a lot of wine to choose from. When it comes to dining, I consider eating an opportunity cost. If I have something that isn't good, I view that as wasted stomach space that could've been used for something tastier. As far as Zen's food, I only had a sampling of things that my friends had ordered. I had a piece of spider roll which was pretty good. If a restaurant's spider roll is good, my educated guess is that the rest of the sushi should be as well. Another thing I had was calamari. This is pretty much a staple when I go out and it was good too. The last thing I had was duck spring roll. That's what I was told it was. I think it was my first time having something like that and I liked it. I don't think any stomach space was wasted this time. Later in the evening, there was live music. That was pretty interesting to see. It was chill lounge type music. I peeked across into Asia Bistro since they're attached and I was delighted to see Panton chairs. I can't speak for the food, but I know it looks cool. When the wife and I go out, we always ask each other if we'd go back and we agreed we definitely would check it out again. We want to try more of the food.

This place has a comfortable setting with a modern appeal. Only had a glass of white wine, but it was served cool not cold. I still recommend going just be aware of how your beverage may be served.

I have been here several time and every time the food is good, servers are polite, and the sushi is fresh! I highly recommend for a happy hour or good sushi.

I find myself here often with coworkers after we've had a crappy day at work. Happy hour drink specials are good, and when the weather is nice, absolutely nothing beats sitting outside drinking delicious sangria and eating sushi. I've had mixed service, sometimes very quick, sometimes very slow. If I'm in Pentagon Row for lunch and I want sushi, I go next door to Asia Bistro (same sushi menu, and they share sushi chefs) where the service seems to be more consistent. But when I want to drink and relax and eat sushi, I go to Zen. Must order: spicy tuna tempura roll. It is FRIED. Most of the sushi I have ordered has been very good-- the fish has been very fresh lately.

I recently checked this place out on a Wednesday night for happy hour and their live music. I was pleasently surprised! I ordered sushi and Sangria. Both were delicious! The staff was very friendly and fast. Although the music starts about a half hour after happy hour ends we lingered for awhile after dinner to listen. I went with a group of girlfriends but would be a great spot for a date as well. I will be back very soon!

We went to Zen Bistro for a quick dinner. I got shrimp and fish ball noodles. I like that broth, so I cant say that much. But it tasted exactly like Chinatown's Wonton noodle soup. Jason got various pieces such as sushi and maki. Sushi pieces are very small compare to the other Japanese place, and the maki is in its standard size and tastes decent. The place played pretty loud music that made us think we are at a trendy loud club/bar.

  • Nuj M.

It's not the best sushi you'll ever have, but it's decent. I like the atmosphere for some reason, especially the outdoor seating, and go there often. It's easy and there is usually a seat open. The appetizers are tasty, especially the curry puffs. I'd recommend it more for Happy hour and appetizers, rather than dinner or lunch. And they have tasty drinks, esp mojitos!

ZEN is the sort of place I'd shoot footage of if I needed a cool bar for a video project. There's lots of color, uniform lighting, an initial appearance of coziness, and a lot of space to set up the cameras. It's the sort of place that would look really good in photos and film. The thing is, that'd all be part of the illusion of film. In actuality, ZEN's a very large room with hard walls and floors. Even quiet conversations turn into roaring background noise. Despite an utter absence of noisy music and patrons, I could barely hear myself, let alone my friends while talking at the bar. The acoustics seemed shockingly poor. The lighting, although great for photos, is a bit too uniform to actually be cozy. The tables are spaced well for privacy, but with nothing between the tables but well-lit echoing space, there's not really any privacy. Making matters worse, the bartenders all seemed to suffer from severe cases of pretty girl syndrome. They were all cute perky girls who made no believable effort to show hospitality towards their patrons. It took several minutes at the bar before we were acknowledged, let alone served. When 3-4 people are behind a bar with only 12 patrons, a wait that long is just ludicrous. When we finally were served, it was done with obviously feigned courtesy. All this time the bar girls... I don't even want to call them bartenders... were busy chatting and tickling each other and failing to even glance at their nearby customers as they rushed around to do their side work and play with their cell phones. My experience at ZEN reeked of mediocrity and superficiality. At a glance the place looks rather nice, but after spending only a few minutes there it was obvious that all the decor lacked depth, detail, and care. The staff backed that up with poor service and fake smiles, the drinks were not only standard but expensive and weak. I really don't understand why people ever choose to go to places like this.

I've been ZEN twice and now, and both times I've ordered the same thing - their Kalbi bowl. It's been amazing both times. It's quite filling and full of flavor. The service at ZEN was good both times and I enjoyed that they have outdoor seating (we took advantage of that the second time I visited and it was quite romantic!). Just be aware that there may be bugs out there and that half of the outdoor seating area is not covered by the canopy, so if it starts raining, you'll either have to find a table on the other side of the outdoor seating or you'll have to go sit inside the restaurant. I've tasted their spicy tuna roll here as well and enjoyed it. To be honest, the food is a bit pricey and it's funny that it's right next to Asia Bistro (and I'm inclined to think the two restaurants are owned by the same people, as they attach at the back), but it's well worth the experience and I will certainly visit again.

The sushi was pretty much the equivalent of gas station sushi. The fish did not look fresh, the rice had a very manufactured consistency (clearly not hand rolled) and unpleasant texture, and the yellow tail roll had a fishy, spoiled taste. Very disappointing experience and extremely overpriced.

I recently had the fried chicken wings here and got the sauce on the side. It reminded me of Bonchon chicken wings, but i liked these better because getting the sauce on the side made the chicken even crisper than Bonchon. Will definitely order again! And on another note, the staff is always super friendly the bathrooms clean.

I expected so little due to the yelp rating and maybe because I was braced for the worst, I was left mostly satisfied. We redeemed our 15% checkin offer to start and ordered some snow beauty saki, shumai and wings to start. As for the food, the shumai was fine - good serving size and flavor (again I was probably expecting what my frozen ones from H mart taste like and these were definitely better). The wings were generally meaty and spicy - finance loved the spicy kimchi that came with. We ordered the beef bulgogi to share - the flavor was great but not enough meat in the serving IMO. The service however, at 2pm with hardly anyone there, was un-excusably slow. I had to ask 3 times for the snow beauty and follow up after the bulgogi.

This place is a bit small, but it makes up for it. Our waitress was very friendly, funny, professional and present. We ordered appetizers, sushi and sake and left feeling pretty satisfied. I realized only a little too late that towards the back of the establishment there is an area with plush, leather seats and I would have preferred sitting there (next time perhaps). The waitressed helped with giving us information on the meals and the sake and we enjoyed every minute of it. The ONLY disconcerting thing was that the person waiting to remove a plate from our table kept coming up to see if we were done and then retreating - over and over again. I almost felt a bit pressured, but minor stuff, really. Overall a great experience and I will go again. My Maryland sushi spot!

Decided to grab a beer here with a friend and ended up getting some grub as well. $3 happy hour beer specials, not bad. Was sad to see only American beers. Atmosphere was good, food came out pretty quick and was fairly tasty. Had the nigiri: salmon and tuna, good good. Had the hamachi roll (I added scallions) good, the spicy crunchy tempura tuna roll wasn't too much of a fan of this one. The zen rice paper rolls were very good, but the best part of the whole meal was the $3 shumai on happy hour. Sooooo good. Staff was friendly. Something about this place just seems Americanized Asian cusine....but had a nice time.

There crab wantons are the most delicious wantons I ever had! The decor is really nice . My chicken Lo Mien was season good with the add of some soy sauce and the vegetables taste fresh, just wish they would chopped the vegetables up better. Overall 3.75

Service = 4. Sushi = Blows Goats Stale, in the verge of causing a GI blow out. I lived in northern Aomori Prefecture for 2 yrs. if you don't know where that is, your opinion of sushi is automatically suspect. This "fish" should've been half price. Ever go eat at a 1/2 price sushi joint? Right! Why was it on sale? Most of the fish was over a week old, sour and possibly suitable for hipsters not sushi connoisseurs and certainly not sashimi quality. Zen masks it's stale old fish in the tried and true sushi roll. Fine, if you want to pervert the art of fresh fish, roll the shit in black sesame rice and tell me the crab roll I just ordered is crab, when it's KRAB. Wait staff were well above average, which is one of the things that keeps idiots voting the food at a 3 start level. A solid 1. Great wait staff & atmosphere. But I didn't come here for that. Tip to the owners: clearly you're not interested in trying to serve good food. Suck less. A lot less.

I had such high hopes for this establishment. BLUF: service was very good, wine & beverage selection was decent, but the food was overpriced and very disappointing. We ordered the Peking Duck wrap and Sushi for Two. The wrap was mostly iceberg lettuce--very skimpy on the duck. The sushi combo included a California roll with fake 'krab', and pieces of tuna, salmon, shrimp, and various other pieces of 'ao-sakana' for the true sushi aficionados. The pieces were of decently generous size, but were well past their prime in terms of freshness. For an overall bill of $75 before tip, I would expect much more in terms of food quality. If it would have been just based on the food, I would have given them one star. I gave a 1/2 point bump each for service and drink menu.

4 Stars for the basic offerings. If you like maki rolls, Zen will work for you. I was sort of feeling like I just wanted the basic this night when I came here. I was not dying for the extra bam and boom like some sushi bar offerings can conjure up with specialty rolls. Sometimes basic is good especially with the right price. I ordered my typical bagel, crunchy crab, and spicy tuna along with a ginger salad. Keep in mind the salad is a good appetizer size, but will run you the same cost for a typical maki roll. Next time I will pass on the salad. I used to work for a sushi restaurant back in the day... believe me it is not worth $6 for a ginger salad at any place even at the fanciest of sushi places. This is not fancy and shouldn't be allowed to up-charge for a dern salad like that. Maybe $3, but not $6. My sushi rolls were fine. Your typical run of the mill. They have a lot of specialty rolls for reasonable prices. Like I said, since I wanted to stick to the basics, I got the basics. They were good and fresh. I had left overs for lunch the next day and still fresh. I can't elaborate on their specialty rolls since this was my first time here. Rule of thumb I've learned is if they have the basics covered, then I am sure they have the rest covered. I wasn't quite sure who my server was since it seemed like everyone was paying me attention with my sushi, water refills, and the bill. I tipped accordingly. Zen has a cool ambiance inside in out. I enjoyed the music they played over their radio and listening to that while on the patio made for a perfect evening for dining. For those of you who enjoy people watching, this is a prime location.

We came here with pretty low expectations. Amazing sushi is exceptionally rare, but decent sushi is so simple it's hard to mess up if you care. We figured a 3 star rating, the good location and 15% off our bill would insure at least an okay experience. We were wrong. We arrived, were seated, and waited 15 minutes for a sever to come to our table in the mostly empty restaurant. We ordered a bottle of sake, but were informed they didn't have that one in stock. We started with chicken potstickers. They tasted frozen and bland. I can honestly say I've gotten better at a grocery store. We had 4 sushi rolls, including one Tokyo Sun roll, the house specialty. All of the sushi was equally bland and uninspiring. The Tokyo Sun featured a heaping pile of crab stick, pulled apart like spaghetti and drenched in spicy mayo (this place LOVES crab stick, ironic in a location known for abundant, fresh crab). It was disgusting. We both felt that everything was exceedingly bland. The fish was definitely not fresh, although we agreed it didn't seem dangerous. Garnishes were all throughly dried out and old. We decided to call a spade a spade, paid and left 60% of our meal uneaten. One and a half stars because our server was mostly friendly, the restaurant was clean and the food was primarily tasteless as opposed to bad tasting. If you hate flavor and love crab stick, this might be the place for you.

They had me at, "Yes, we have gluten-free soy sauce." TVs viewable from pretty much anywhere in the restaurant. Rolls were great. Very accommodating when we asked to make some tweaks to our order (allergies). We'll be back!

Cozy, exotic and a sense that oxygen is fused into the air with the entranceway art and cypress low slung coffee table. Makes a girl want to get into velvet and rub against the wood grain of the place. That aside, the people just seem nice, efficient and CLEAN!!! The rolls are are fresh and served with as much art as can be found in a stalk of asparagus. Seriously? Who else sees birds, dragons where others only find seaweed and rice. Again, a great date place...quiet but not creepy. Modern and cozy...a breath of fresh air from the sports bars nearby!

  • Samnang S.

MEH... Wouldn't come here again without a groupon so I'm glad we got one! For appetizer, we got the spicy tuna roll and it is bland and super small! My fiancé got the Penang curry and I got the beef bibimbap. The curry didn't have any heat like advertised so he had to ask for hot sauce. My dish was good but not great because for a $15 dish they didn't give me much meat. So if you're new to Asian food and want something safe and nowhere near authentic, this is the place! Oh btw, it's SUPER pricey, spent $50, at an authentic Asian restaurant, you would get more bang for your buck.

Love their spring rolls on the Asian Bistro Side...this was the first place I've ever eaten sushi. Not my favorite place but their Teriyaki chicken used to be really tender I haven't eaten that in awhile either.

Came for lunch on Saturday. ..no one else in the place when I arrived but several people filtered in before I left. Server was polite and attentive. Water and green tea arrived promptly as did a complimentary cup of miso soup. Ordered tuna and eel sushi (two pieces of each per order) and a salmon/cucumber/avacado roll (six pieces per roll). All were ok but undistinguished. Tuna was somewhat dry...probably not fresh. Roll was pretty good. Eel was served covered with too much of a sweet sauce..order the sauce on the side to avoid OD'ing. Had a 15% off on-line coupon from Yelp so be sure you check for availability of same coupon...Total bill after discount was just over $19.00. OK place on a cold day. Sushi may be better at dinner.

I don't usually give 5 stars for most restaurants but Zen Bistro & Wine Bar is definitely one of my favorite restaurants at Pentagon Row. I went with a friend for dinner on a Saturday, it was great. We ordered the Thai chicken wings , it was seasoned perfectly and it was finger licking good! For sushi we ordered the Pink Dragon and the Tokyo Sun Roll, both were very delicious and fresh. For entree we ordered the Braised Lemon Grass Lamb Chops, the marinade was perfect and the meat was cooked just right! We also got Rice in a Pot with shrimp , it was different but very good. Overall, the service, the ambiance was great. I would definitely recommend this to everyone!

Great patio and happy hour specials. While visiting on a work trip, I finally had my first yuengling. The waitress was very attentive and really sweet. I had dinner and drinks for one and sat on the patio to read a book for a bit. Nice and relaxing. I'd go back again!

I have been delaying my review here since this is our favorite hangout in our 'hood at Pentagon Row. Been a loyal customer since being introduced here two years ago. We are here at least 3 nights a week. It's our local Cheers. The service is top notch which deserves five stars. The bartenders especially Suri know how to take care of their customer. The owner Jess stocks my boyfriend's favorite scotch just for him. Now that the outdoor patio is open, we will be spending time outside with our cocktails. Food wise, I would rate it a three. The place shares a kitchen with Asian Bistro next door. My BF only orders the shui Mai or Spring rolls which is not very often done- he would rather eat at home before coming here. I stick to spicy tuna, spicy California, rainbow, or pink dragon roll. Spicy mayo is addicting- I can dip everything in this. Their garden roll is not the usual Vietnamese kind since it lacks pork and mint. FYI-they don't carry ngoc cham (fish sauce) here. I have tried their chicken teriyaki several times- too sweet but I think that appeases the American palette. My mother when she visits has ordered the short ribs which she said was too hard and chewy and not a lot of meat. She tried the chicken panang which she said was just okay. I like to order the udon noodle soup from the menu at Asian Bistro. I request it with chicken until Jess suggested that I also add duck. Double up or triple up (including the fish balls) protein makes a hearty bowl of soup perfect for my Asian appetite. I just wish they put more hot broth in there. I like my soups piping hot and at times, I have gotten it lukewarm. I am limited to authentic Asian food in Pentagon Row and Pentagon City, but Zen is a reliable go-to with no frills. Therefore the five star overall rating! We see the same crowd every time and it's great to catch up with our neighbors.

Love this place! Sushis are great. I can say it is the best sushi that I have ever had. I always try Tokyo Sun roll. The staff are friendly and nice. It is a quite environment, in which you can enjoy a peaceful dinner.

Well below par. Service substandard. I have ordered and food delivered in opposite order with main meal before appetizer. Also have yet to be asked how my meal is 20 minutes in. California Roll made w/ imitation crab. Ramen noodles fresher than what is advertised in soup bowl. Best thing here is exit door

I had somewhat high hopes for Zen (I think because Pentagon Row has lots of delicious options) but I wasn't that impressed. The sushi was fine, but nothing special (in my humble opinion). We also ordered the duck spring rolls which were pretty decent and a good summertime dish. Restaurant was clean and I liked the look of it. Service was a bit on the slower side, granted there were only 2 people working but the restaurant wasn't that full when we went either. I'll probably just stick to the other restaurants around Pentagon Row....

It's a very cool looking place, the staff is friendly and the service is good. The prices are okay but best of all they'll man's best friend into the establishment.

Went for happy hour and sat at the bar. Nice setting and they also have outdoor seating. Prices were great for wine/sangria during HH. For food, we had the potstickers (not that good), crispy spring rolls (great) and a couple of sushi rolls (decent!). For all of that food and two drinks per person our tab was only $40 before tip. Great service and prices but wouldn't go solely for the food - I'll come back for drinks.

I really wanted to like this place. The outside eating area is really cute and the inside is decorated very... well Zen-like. Service was good but b/c we were the ONLY customers there- given it was 4 pm on a Sunday so not really lunch or dinner time. The crab wontons were actually the best part- could actually taste the crab and the dipping sauce was sweet and good. But went downhill after that. The calamari was tough and it lacked flavor. I wish it came with a dipping sauce or had more sauce drizzled on top. If the calamari was done right then maybe it wouldn't have needed it at all. The mussels were TINY although they didn't contain any grit (even the nicest of restaurants I've been to have grit sometimes). The sushi was ok- the sushi rice definitely needed more flavor. All in all, I wouldn't come back but I give it 2.5 stars but I always round up if the service is good.

The curry puffs are amazing! Our server, Chris, is always on point and the food presentation is beautiful. My husband and I are here weekly for happy hour. He loves the chicken wings.

I agree that having "wine bar" in their name is a joke. MUCH better places elsewhere. I saw their pricing and weak selection and decided to try their HH sangria (at an Asian restaurant?) and it was actually pretty good. Had the shumai and pot of rice. It tasted ok- very overpriced especially for the amount of duck that was in the dish. Service was weird- waitresses were lurking and they brought our main dishes while we were still working on our appetizers (what is that about? I felt rushed). Then when we were done and asked for our check another waitress came by and asked if we wanted sushi. At least ask if I wanted dessert or something but why would I order sushi after my meal- she seemed a little slow. So as far as the wine bar goes- do not come here. For the food- much better elsewhere and the price for what you are actually getting makes it not worth it to stop by.

One and a half stars, because two seems too generous. Not going to comment much on vibe since we met the rest of our group outside. Kat's right, the waiter hated us, but at least the waitress managed to slap on a happy face to match her wonderfully fobby voice. I also cringed at the thought of premade asparagus. In the bigger scheme of things from a generic management perspective, the more kosher way to phrase it would have been to decline the substitution to maintain ingredient purchase ratios. But to tell us that the food is premade? That a TEMPURA sushi item is premade? That's just gross. I don't want soggy tempura in anything, thanks. See, here's the thing. When you serve Asian food (whether it be pseudo-authentic or fusion failures) to Asians, you have three options: do it right, improve it well, or go home in the face of my nerd rage. When I hear the phrase "Zen pyramid," I'm expecting more than a gimmick. Mentally I may have been expecting zongzi, but my palate's open-minded. Yes, it's a nice cutesy shape garnished with "shrubbery" of julienned carrot and daikon. But I don't give a golly whillickers about plating if it tastes like crap. Mealy peas, edible fried rice, and some of the worst Chinese sausage I've ever had (keep your mind out of the gutter). Grossly dense Chinese sausage and sun-dried baby shrimp make for a textural nightmare in your mouth. They either reheated the sausage, or just plain didn't bother to steam/blanch it before adding it to the stirfry. Considering that the two app plates of salted edamame were a tiny bit underdone for how long it took for them to serve it to Nirali, I'd believe either story. Yeah, I'm the girl who doesn't want to drink too much alcohol in one night, sips at water, and nibbles at Hilvic's plate. I hope Tierra liked her tiramisu, otherwise I'll feel slightly bad that only unhappy reviewers will emerge from that night. I find it unlikely that I'll be back.

The sushi, like the other food here, isn't bad but it isn't very good either. Fairly bland. There are not really enough wine options to call it a wine bar. Prices are high for what you get. It may be worth eating here if you live next door, but I wouldn't make a trip for it.

Tokyo sun roll and pad Thai. These were good dishes. The service was great (prompt/courteous). We went because of a groupon and we were pleasantly surprised. Though a bit pricey. We haven't been back since. There are a lot of things to try in the area.

I'm a huge fan of Asia Bistro/Zen Bistro! My sister took me here when I was visiting from Atlanta, and the food was amazing! I write a food blog about kid bentos, and people, this place has bentos for grownups too! We ate many small plates, and each one was wonderful, the satay, spring rolls, sushi - delicious. The service was great too. My 4 year old daughter was also satisfied (though she does have a wide palate already) and had gyoza dumplings. We're definitely going back! I wrote a blog post in detail, check it out in my profile!

I've been coming to this place for a few years now and I must say as other reviewers have obliquely mentioned, I can't figure how they stay in business. There's rarely anyone else in the place (I know it's connected to the place next door). But that makes it fine with me in this town that seems to equate the goodness of a bar/restaurant/whatever with how many people they can uncomfortably squeeze in. I feel like it's been cleared out for my meeting with Michael Corleone. I generally just stick to stuff from the sushi menu and other small plates. The sushi is always ok (DC is not a sushi town) with decent cuts though the nigiri doesn't have wasabi under it. I've never thought to ask. The shu mai dumplings are really good as is the octopus salad. The seaweed salad is really a salad, as in it's the traditional seaweed atop lettuce and served with tomatoes and cucumbers, etc. I like that. Some may not. The service is spotty but not for lack of trying. It always seems as though the staff has very limited restaurant experience and sometimes it seems it's a language barrier. Sometimes I'll come in and there is no one there because they are simultaneously working the place next door and I have to go through the connecting door and get someone's attention. Once I left my umbrella in here and came back the next day to inquire. I could not make the woman I talked to understand. She seemed to think it odd that they would actually keep items that patrons had left. Again, language barrier, but not giving them a pass on that. The decor is cool and dark. The drinks are so-so. During happy hour some wines and beers are on special. The house wines are blah. However, the sangria is quite good. This place is an enigma to me but I keep coming back.

I'm surprised by the low reviews of this place. The atmosphere was relaxed and intimate, the decor was modern. My friend and I sat in the lounge area with a helpful server. I liked the food as well, shrimp pad thai and a special appetizer that is not on their regular menu. I'd definitely come back during happy hour.

I have been a little remiss in writing a review about this place for fear it would become crowded and I would have to share it with the tourists coming over from the mall. But they can't seem to find their way out of the food court, so I think I am safe. Zen is one of those wonderful gems hidden away in Pentagon City. I love the relaxing atmosphere, with soft lighting, and super attentive staff. Without the military crowd of Sine and waaay better food than Champs, Zen is a great place to relax with neighbors or friends after work. They have wine and sangria on happy hour and outdoor seating when the DC weather cooperates. And if you are looking to make that hour super happy, try the lychee martinis - whoa. Delicious and dangerous. My recommendation is do not have more than four. You know, just in case your friend dares you to eat the whole ball of wasabi. Not that I would know anyone who took that dare... Little known tip is that you can actually order off either Asia Bistro or Zen's menu - sushi lovers have to try the Asia Bistro roll!! And who knew that an Asian restaurant would have such delicious chicken wings and a lamb appetizer. The chicken and rice pot is basic chicken friend rice, but way better and more fresh than anywhere I have tried before. Yea, the food rocks, but I guess my favorite thing about Zen is the staff. They take the time to get to know you and usually ask me if I want my regular drink before I even sit down. You don't find a lot of places like that around here.

This place looks better than the food tastes. We caught the last 20 minutes of happy hour, so we both had a glass of chardonnay and it was a pretty large sized pour. (big+) The waiter must have come by 3 times in the span of 1 minute to see if we were ready to order - it was just too much, and he seemed kind of annoyed that we weren't ready. (-) I wasn't expecting the meal to come with miso soup - surprise! (+) But it was super seaweed-y. (-) They had a very small selection of entrees which made it hard to order. (-) I ended up ordering the grilled lemongrass pork chop. The first bite of the pork chop was good - there was a bit of sweetness and the flavors were nice, but the more I had it, the more bland it got and the tougher the pork seemed. It also came with "pickled vegetables" which was a fusion version of kimchi. If I expected it to be real kimchi it would have gotten major minus points but since it was offered as general "pickled veggies" it was okay. The salad and the green beans that came with the dish were solid. All in all, I won't go out of my way to eat here. If I'm ever back, I'll just get drinks and skip the food.

Visited this place with a Groupon. Food was good, service was solid. We ordered several appetizers and all 3 were good but the calamari stood out; it was excellent. Neat space - enjoyed the dim lighting & decor

I thought the food here was well made and prepared. I had the 5-duck plate and a spider sushi roll and it was fantastic! The service was very friendly and the atmosphere is very "Zen" like. So overall it made a great dining experience. I'm not a big wine person so for me the wine bar wasn't as important. I can understand why a few people were disappointed in their wine selection and overall experience. After all, it is a wine bar establishment. But for those that are looking for some good asian fusion cuisine this is definitely worth a shot. It's mainly Thai based dishes mixed with a little bit of Chinese, Korean and Japanese style cooking. Excellent and well worth the money.

I really like the atmosphere here. It has a sleek feel to it. The tables and uniforms are all black, and the chopsticks are red. The lighting is dim. The staff is very friendly. The prices are good. The food here is a mix of different Asian styles, including Japanese, Chinese and Thai. I like the mojitos here, especially the raspberry mojito. I recommend the calamari, the steamed dumplings, and the five-spice duck. A date and I went ice skating in Penatagon Row, and then came here to eat afterwords. This makes for a great date spot, especially the couches in the back. I highly recommend it.

I have been blessed with the opportunity to dine/drink at Zen's at least three times a week during a period in my life where I lived on Pentagon Row and worked walking distance to Pentagon Row. Because this bar is "quieter" than Champps or Sine's, it was always a toss up between the Ritz Carlton (Pent City) and Zen's as the choice location for HH. My companions and I have probably spent enough money to have a plaque in our name hanging on the wall. But the only welcome we receive are the sparkling eyes that light up like a Christmas tree knowing that our group is going to balloon quickly and our bar tab is going to rise exponentially. I am so thankful that I no longer have to frequent this place. If I can't remember one memorable meal after probably 200+ visits, this restaurant is not worth visiting. Actually, they did host Wednesday night speed dating which was quite amusing to watch from afar.

I had the Crispy Zen Calamari, which was calamari flash fried in a hot wok with ginger, jalepeno, and lemongrass. I also had the Hanoi Grilled Pork Crepe, which was a rice paper wrapper stuffed with grilled lemongrass pork, mint leaves, carrot, and radish pickles. Both were very good. Outdoor seating area has a great atmosphere, with a view into the Pentagon Row Courtyard. Service is good. They have $4 sangria and $4 wine during happy hour. Overall, this is a nice place and I would return.

My friend recommended Zen to me and I decided to try it out. The first time I went, we ate at the bar. We ordered serval plates of sushi and some drinks. The sushi was average, but living in Hawaii, I think I may be spoiled with an abundance of good sushi places. But what really turned me off about this place was that while I was sitting at the bar, a roach crawled out from under my plate! I freeked out and vowed to never sit at the bar if I came back to this place. The second time I went, it was due to the same friend that had recommended this place to me ... some mutual friends were in town, and he had recommended this place to them as well, so we all went. This time, we did not sit at the bar. The sushi was again, average. The main dishes, however, were subpar. The fried rice bowl was mushy and not very tasty. The teriyaki chicken had hardly any taste, and I cannot even remember the last dish we had, so it most likely was not great, but not terrible. If you must come here, stick to the sushi and appetizers and stay away from the main dishes. And be warry when you listen to a friend who recommends this place because he had a thing for a waitress here!

The staff hated us. There were 10 of us drinking, OUTSIDE. The bathroom was WET. I saw a roll with tempura asparagus, and being allergic to fish I asked if the kitchen could just do a HUGE plate of tempura asparagus for whatever the price. I was informed the rolls were premade, and no they couldnt. After hearing the words 'premade' i did not order anything. Yea i'm that guy that just had water while everyone ate and drank.

CliffsNotes: I'm not a fan of any restaurant that resembles page 49 of the West Elm catalog. I dislike all Asian "fusion" restaurant that attempts to be pretentious. I disagree with the notion of pairing Asian food with wine. I'm confused about the night-and-day restaurant concept between Asia Bistro and Zen Bistro. It's the basically the same food from the same kitchen except in two different restaurants. In fact, I'm reminded of Top Chef's beloved Restaurant Wars episodes with regards to the qualify of service, food, and decor. At the end of the day ... I'm just not impressed. I agree with Heather C. G. this place had great curb appeal! Especially with their awesome outdoor area and the trendy indoor decorating. But I think that pretty much describe's Pentagon Row in general: lots of potential and captivating decor, but not much below the surface. I'm not sure how the business here stay afloat. Perhaps the constant influx of tourists and TDYers... The food here isn't that good. Zen and it's sister restaurants, Asia Bistro and Thai all fall short on authenticity and flavor. Sadly, there aren't that many better options nearby.

Checked out ZEN with some girlfriends after work for dinner. Good ambiance and had very good service - but not impressed with the sushi. Fish wasn't so fresh, though not terrible and the seaweed salad amazingly lacked much seaweed. The drinks we ordered were good and nice ambiance.

I ended going to this place in a rainy day when I ended to b in pentagon area. I've been in Arlington for 2 years. I ate around in so many places but in Zen I never been. Anyway to make the story short this place was not worth the money I spent. It is cheap tho but not tasty. I had way better Asian food in other places.

Great sushi, happy hour sangria & wine prices and waitstaff! I enjoy this place and come here often. The sushi and zen rolls are delicious. I've hosted a few happy hours here and colleagues always enjoy it. Surprised to read the bad reviews...Jessica and the crew are great!

While the outside eating area is charming, the service and food are far from it. We had multiple wait staff who asked the same questions repeatedly. We ordered Pad Thai which tasted liked noodles with bbq sauce on it. When we told the waitress that we weren't crazy about the sauce, she said she wasn't either. She told us it came out of a jar!! I would never go back or recommend the restaurant.

Unfortunately, this place has lots of curb appeal but nothing that will prompt me to ever return.. unless I'm getting the Lo Mein to go. I was there on a Friday afternoon and it was EMPTY.. which I don't mind at all. The music was weird... Train, U2 and some unrecognizable boy band in a restaurant called "ZEN" Bistro? Not what I was expecting and, since the place was so empty, pretty distracting. Our appetizer wasn't bad just.... weird. We really weren't sure of how to rate, describe or process it, really. Crispy Tempura Asparagus Rolls.. the best part was the crispy texture.. but would I order it again? I'm not sure I could call it appetizing; they are honestly like weird Asian mozzarella sticks. You be the judge. They are at the least worth trying as they are certainly unique. My Lo Mein was pretty good. The chicken was a little dry, my two pieces of shrimp were delicious and the texture of the noodles were perfect; thick and chewy. The serving was also very generous. Our waiter brought us the most disgusting soup I've ever A) seen; it looked like a cloudy, puddle of muddy rain water with chunks of tofu floating around in it, and B) tasted. DO NOT EAT THE SOUP. I have no idea what it was even called nor did I order it but DO NOT EAT IT.. unless you love tofu, I guess. Our waiter, while nice, disappeared for 30+ minutes. He wasn't even somewhere that we could wave him over from; he legit vanished. We had just "guesstimated" our bill and were going to leave cash when another waiter came to refill our already full water. He was great about getting it for us quickly. In closing, cool looking place, bad music, bad soup, weird appetizer, limited menu, GREAT lo mein and keep an eye on your server if you ever want to leave.

I originally was headed to Pentagon Row to shop DSW (this region sucks for sneakers, btw), I was famished after a good work out and traveling to Pentagon CIty, so I decided to stop in here because it had "wine bar" in the name. What a mistake... Once there, and since starving, I decided to stick it out and have an open mind. I started with crab rangoon puffs, a classic, which were good, if not slightly lacking in crab meat. I'm guessing it was blue crab, "fresh" from Thailand (or in other words, processed and preserved in chemicals). I eventually chose the Zen Pyramind, which was just friend rice sculpted in a pyramid formation. What a disappointment, not because the fried rice wasn't good, it was only decent, because it sounded like so much more. In short, I can cook better than the food offered here. As for the "wine bar" element to this place, what a joke. If this is what passes for a wine bar in Arlington, please, someone help this city and its residents. I started with a dry sparkler, which was described to me as slightly sweet (not at all), and then I moved on to a taste of J. Lohr Merlot and a taste of Gnarly Head Zin - both products you can get for under $10 at any grocery store - and these were the more high end of the wine list! I'll spare you a description as any of you with an average palette will understand my disappointment. I didn't bother to look at the dessert list, as I was already underwhelmed by my food and wine experience, not to mention the catty Asian employees discussing the latest internal gossip less than an ear shot away, so I paid my $40 tab (say what???) and hit the mall.

Terrible place...especially for all the "hype". My boyfriend and I went on valentines day for a romantic dinner before skating at Pentagon Row. Service here was lazy and their general manner was perfunctory at best. The fish was far from fresh, and (pet peeve) the seaweed salad was mostly iceberg lettuce with a sprinkling of seaweed salad on top of it. When I order seaweed salad, I want nada but the seaweed salad. I'd have asked for house salad if I wanted lettuce (which anyway was browning due to freezer burn...ew) Their largest sake was roughly the size of a regular small sized sake you'd find in any other restaurant. And, lastly, they mixed up one of our orders so that one of us was eating while the other waited twiddling thumbs, etc. Very disappointing :experience overall. The two stars, however, are for ambience (I will hand it to Zen for setting the mood via decor, lighting, etc.); and the second star is for proximity - it is indeed close to many great little clubs, cafes, miscellaneous bars, and (if you're visiting during the winter) the outdoor skating rink :)

This is NOT a wine bar. A wine bar would have a good rotating selection of wines and presumably a selection of cheese. Zen has neither and the bartenders have no knowledge of wine. Zen is merely an extension of Asia Bistro next door, uses the same kitchen and wait staff, and serves similar food. Not sure how this place stays in business because there is never anyone in the restaurant.

This place blows... or rather, I blew chunks after eating here. Oh WOW was it disgusting. 2 redeeming qualities... the decor is cool and the music was great 80's... at least until a huge tour bus pulled up outside and a bunch of teenie-boppers came in and complained about the old fogy music, so the bartender changed it to.... wait for it... taylor swift and miley cyrus!! Yeah, at least I know I'm a rockstar while I puke. PS- had NO alcoholic drinks, so that's can't be to blame.

Had an alumni happy hour here last night. They reserved an area of the lounge for us. Our event was from 6 - 8 and though happy hour technically ended at 7, they extended the happy hour specials. Service was friendly, though it was unclear who exactly was our waitress. We also ordered some appetizers, but I arrived late due to traffic and managed to only snag a piece of sushi, which was okay. Looks like the alumni who showed up had a good time. I've been here before and like it for its location and that they don't really get too packed, so it's easy for a big group to find spots to mingle.

The food was okay but the service was terrible. We waited for water and our check for quite some time and the restaurant was not even that busy. Subsequently because things were so slow and we were in a hurry we left quickly. They kept our credit card and we realized it when we returned home. We called them multiple times to see if they still had the card 20 minutes after leaving and they hung up on us each time without vetting our concerns. Ultimately after 24 hours and multiple discussions with a manager we were able to get our card back. We will not return due to obvious lack of organization, communication deficits and poor customer service. A major waste of time and there groupon is not even that good of a deal.

Excuse me, is this a wine bar???? You can't have only 2 kinds of pinot noir and few other kinds and call it a wine bar. HEllo~~~ If you are wino like me, don't bother wasting your time and money here. There is a reason why they have different types of wine glasses, for white, red and different types of glasses for red as well. You can't have only one type of wine glass for all the wines!!!! And you dare to call yourself a wine bar! Oh, please! _________________ bartender: What can I get for ya? me: a bottle of Cristom pinot noir please. bartender: Which one? me: This one, please. (as I point) bartender: Oh C-R-I-S-T-O-M...Oh boy... let's try to find that one now... me: ?!?!?!?! bartender: Let's see.. oh here it is... me: (yes, the bottle is looking right at you....displayed right in the front) bartender: I knew it was there... I'm just lazy, you know. me: (uhhhh...No, I didnt know... and great! I have a lazy bartender...) ____________________________ 20 minutes later... bartender: how are you guys doing? me: I would love a glass of water bartender: sure... me:.....................................??? bartender: watching TV. I know bartenders are human and we do forget...But man, I just told you.. and you walk away and watch TV??? Boy oh boy. This had to be the worst bar experience I have ever had. I don't like sports bars, but geez, had I not ordered a bottle of wine, I would have left and walked straight to Champs (sports bar, next door). While the restaurant/bar is nice, it is far from being a WINE bar. I would never go back! Ever! I wish Yelp has an option to give no stars as ratings.
