This place is so good. A little bit of a divey feel to it, but how Five Guys is for burgers, this place is for cheesesteaks. The price point is good, and everything is fresh, with everyone there being friendly and efficient. Will return.

Awesome, awesome Philly cheese steaks and the other items are equally as good. Only thing, they could do a little better of a job keeping the place looking clean. I certainly don't mind hole-in-wall joints but I shouldn't have to dodge fallen fries, spilled shakes and play maze through any other given mess.

The Broiler is and away my favorite. It been in Arlington for a long long long time. I love there steak mushroom and cheese. People get the 6" but I alway get the 12". And there soft ice cream is out of this world. Haven't had there pizza. But I hear it great. There no wheel chair ramp. Table only one size has to chair. restroom a one person at a time. Limited parking. But what limited but it make up with the steak subs. And no free refill on the drinks.

I've been here before and to be short and sweet they do make a good steak & cheese sub, and their meatball subs are delicious and flavorful. However, I would recommend ordering the sandwich to eat in because they get soggy from the meat juices if you take carry out and have to go too far. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for fast, good food!

The Broiler (located on Columbia Pike in Arlington, VA) had been on my bookmarks list for a while and my fiancÃ© and I decided to visit to grab sandwiches to-go last weekend. It's a very old-timey, greasy, grimey sort of place, but we didn't let appearances dissuade us. We had no trouble finding parking in their little lot (which was nice, as parking can be tight on Columbia Pike). The inside was a bit dilapidated and they had an old Ms. Pacman machine (a relic of decades ago, no doubt) next to the area where you place your order. Not sure if the machine was still operational, but we didn't try. We both ordered the foot-long Philly cheesesteak sandwiches (my fiancÃ© ordered his with mushrooms and I ordered mine with no mushrooms). The cheesesteak was delicious!! We took it to go and I ate part of mine immediately and was amazed at how fresh and delicious it was. Definitely very fatty, so it's certainly not for those on a diet, but it perfectly satisfied the foodie in me. I saved part of mine for later in the day, since my fiancÃ© and I also had plans to get BBQ elsewhere, and it was still fresh and delicious even hours later and after being microwaved! The reason I'm giving the place 4 stars is that the service was really slow. We placed our to go order and still waited around for 25 minutes to get our food. People who walked in and placed their orders after us got their food before we did. I didn't think our order was particularly complicated, but the others probably ordered pizza so it was easier. I think they may have been backed up that day, so I would definitely give them another try for sure in the future. Very delicious sandwiches for a great price and convenient location!

It's been so many years since I was last here, but the steak and cheese is still so good! We both got the steak and cheese (comes with lettuce, tomato, grilled onion and mayo). I added hot peppers. We also grabbed a large (rectangle) pizza with green peppers, black olives, mushroom and meatballs. While it may not be the best pizza, it was good and I'd order one again. But the steak and cheese - so good. If you decide to order fries, be warned - they give you a lot. Two can easily share an order of these crinkle fries that take you back to elementary school days.

The Broiler has been around since '55 and has always been a neighborhood favorite. They serve a nice extensive menu featuring fast American fare, including breakfast subs, burgers, hot subs (comes in either a regular 6" or a large 12"), pizza, and even a kids menu. This is one of my favorite places to grab a Steak & Cheese and a sausage pizza. The Steak & Cheese is always cooked perfectly, with the melty gooey cheese, expertly-cut up steak slices, grilled onions (fried), with a request of extra mayo (you can also add lettuce and tomatoes, if you wish) - this always hits the spot! I also get a side of their freshly-fried crinkle-cut fries. Their pizza is also delicious, as it has a crunchy buttery crust - I gobble them up, and I'm not even a crust person! :D During the summer, don't forget to try out their soft-serve - it is rich, creamy, and lovely, and comes in vanilla, chocolate, or swirl. They serve your standard Coke products, but the big plus is that they have crushed ice (oh, yea, totally makes a difference!) The guys here are oh-so-friendly and so sweet, and definitely remembers their regulars :D They have some seating inside, but you can also call ahead and do a carry-out. Ok! I see what everyone is bragging about! This has to be the best sub shop I've been to since I've been in VA. You wouldn't think that you would get such good food & service at this dive from looking at it. But to my surprise, the staff was super friendly. I ordered the cheesesteak sub & although it needed a lil salt & pepper, it was quite good. When I pulled back the paper & the juices were on the foil, I KNEW this was a good sign. And just as I thought it was good. I'll definitely go back. Gotta try the pizza...it looked really good!

I give it 2 stars. Stopped by at lunch for a steak and cheese, not to be confused with a Philly cheesesteak. I won't even begin to compare the two. It was a reasonable sandwich in size for $6, but average flavor. Nothing special. They have a well seasoned grill and i imagine everything grilled tastes the same. I might return and try something else.

There are two places in Arlington to get a good steak and cheese and The Broiler is one of them. Been coming here since I was a kid. If you are on the south side and have a jones for a good sandwich then slide on through. If you from Arlington, you are bound to run into some old friends that are coming here for the same reason! ;-)

A local Arlington institution, first establish in 1959, this hole-in-the-wall area favorite remains a draw for all those who come back time and again for good basic staples at awesome-value prices! Come hungry, because the Broiler promises to satisfy the heartiest of appetites! And, while you're there, ask for Pedro. The dude has been there for at least five years, and he'll make sure that you're taken care of and are all set!

Best Steak & Cheese's in Arlington!! I add Extra Meat and Cheese to make the Steak & Cheese more indulging. Staff is super friendly in comparison to your traditional food chain steak and cheese places. The Broiler makes it more personable and adds the personality to separate themselves. Parking can be a little tight but it's well worth the wait if you have too. Kudos to these guys.

Sitting at home tonight (3-21-15) and pizza came the the minds of my family and I so I googled pizza places in Arlington and this joint came up. Every1 said let's try it out & boy oh boy am I glad we did. All we had so far was 2 pizza's but man was they some of The Best pizza's we have ever had & we've had many being my lady is from N.Y. if u kno what I mean lol. Anyway all I can say is the pizza was Bang'N w/a capital B! The sauce was good, it was cheesy and plenty of toppings.... We're going to give it a week and probably head back over there to try out some other things on the menu & if they are anything like the pizza .... You already know what I'll probably be saying ....Bang'N! Just go check it out for yourself & you'll see what I'm talking about.

Great steak and cheese. Got a large, and it's actually 2 regular size Subs. Oh my. Love the crinkle fries as you don't find them around a lot these days. Awesome Ms PAC MAN video machine to play while waiting. I think it may be an original. Service was also fast.

6" cheesesteak w shrooms for $6.2, 12" cheesesteak around $11 and crinkle cut fries for $2.5. A decent sandwich, but needed a tad of salt and pepper. Only comes loaded w lettuce, tomato and mayo. Not as tasty as Al's, but this will do in a pinch in you are in n arlington. Parking is definitely limited and this place is a hole in the wall, which usually means good food.

This was by far a very deceiving place. Me and a coworker wanted some Italian subs. So we look up the menu for the broiler. I call in the subs. I order mine with lettuce onion, vinegar and mustard thinking cold sub with Italian meats. Pick up the subs get back to work, and it's nothing but a thin slice of hot sausage on a roll that tastes like a hungry man Salisbury steak, and tastes even worse with the vinegar and mustard on it. The other issue is the damn things cost 11.50 each!!!!!! You need to change your menu so it reflects what the sandwich really is. A thin sliced hot Hungry man Salisbury steak on a bun with onions and peppers.

The steak and cheese is one of the best I've had in the area. However their prices don't make sense. A 12" costs the same as two 6" sandwiches. In other words, you're not getting a discount on the larger size - you're just buying two of the small ones. Clearly no one cares though, because it seems like this place has been here for a very long time with good reviews.

The mushroom steak and cheese left me underwhelmed. There was no flavor! Where's the juicy goodness? The salt? The seasoning? Nothing, it was so bland. The bread was a soggy mess. There was barely any meat. The lettuce and tomato was seemingly fresh though. The fries taste like they are the ones you can get at the freezer section at any grocery store. Maybe I just got a bad sandwich since the other reviews sound so promising, but I was so disappointed I'm not sure if it's worth returning.

I don't know what everyone is taking about. When I eat here the cheese steak was lacking flavor. Abs it was plain. The fries were plain also. I'm giving this pave two stars and not one because the pizza might be the thing to eat at this place. But there is to many places around to waste time on this place. I think of you are drinking this might be a good drunk food or munchies food.

I got a cheesesteak and fries here. The cheesesteak was pretty tasty but they have no cheez whiz! To their credit they call it a Steak & Cheese, not a Philly Cheesesteak. The fries were cooked well but were just plain crinkle cut fries, nothing special! Overall okay, I'd give it another try.

Found this place on a Saturday when we were craving some cheesesteaks to go with our college football and beer....and it did not disappoint! We got 3 six-inch sandwiches and 2 orders of fries. We had a steak & cheese, chicken & cheese, and a veggie. All were delicious! Portions were really generous, the meat was well flavored, and the veggie sub was really tasty and filling. The veggie came with green peppers, mushrooms, lettuce, tomatoes, and melted provolone. So good! The fries portions were also very large - too much for 3 of us to finish. Service was awesome - so nice and very fast/efficient. There are a few tables in the restaurant, but parking is kind of tough. Might help to come with someone (especially on a weekend) in case you need to run in and have someone wait in the car. Bonus: A Ms. Pacman machine that lets you play for only 25 cents!

So the food is reallllly good. One of the best cheese steaks I have had in Northern VA (I'm from Philly, I'm always searching for a good cheese steak). But the parking is crap. It is tight and not very plentiful. Get there at the wrong time and you are SOL. Prices are also a tad bit high (large cheese steak and a soda = $14...not to say that there wasn't enough food, just...I am accustomed to paying no more than $20 in Philly for 2 large cheese steaks and 2 drinks). I will definitely return here when I craving a REALLY good cheese steak. I don't crave them too often, unfortunately.

Meh. I am very selective with my steak & cheese as I used to cook for a true Sicilian who served delicious Italian food. And having cooked steak & cheese for 5 years i learned that the steak should be chooped thin and its shouldnt be tough if you want a good sandwich. im giving the place 2 stars because it wasnt as good as the reviews stated. Not quite as good as Al's Steak House but it's a still a decent grease joint for steak and cheese sandwiches. Like Paul D. once said, "it's your basic hole in the wall, greasy sub/pizza shop." The standard 12" sandwich is substantial but wasn't flavorful. The fries, however, were thick, crispy, and wrinkly ... just the way I like them. Prices are reasonable as well. Okay so I know that I say alot of places have great steak and cheese subs but this place is top 3 of all places. So flavorful, seasoned well, cheesy and messy. The crinkle cut fries are always crunchy and doesn't even need ketchup (those are the best type of fries). Haven't tried the pizza yet but planning to come back soon to try it. Prices are reasonable, well worth the money for what you're getting. Pretty damn good if ya ask me!

This review is based on my first visit yesterday (3/27/13) and 2 stars for the quality of the food. Service and everything else would be 3 to 3.5 stars. If you go for lunch during the weekday and the small parking lot is full (especially when trucks are taking up two spots), there is a lot behind Burger King next door. I didn't see any signs for specific spots, so I assume it's safe to park there for an hour. There was a good crowd around 12:30 pm but not too crazy. We were able to find a table easily. My friend and I both ordered the mushroom, steak and cheese sandwich with an order of the krinkle cut fries to share. It looked great, however the flavor was lacking. Bite after bite, we looked around to see if we were missing something. More seasoning for the steak? A more flavorful cheese? I don't know but it needed something. Oh well, it was worth a shot. I don't know anything about their cheesesteaks...I do know, though, that these folks make the best breakfast sandwiches in Arlington. For a no-frills, hardcore bacon-egg-and-cheese, I'd put this place up against anywhere in Arlington.

I love going here. The steak and cheese subs are phenomenal. I always go with a simple cheeseburger. I really love their burgers. There's something about them that just makes them taste amazing. The guys are always super nice and friendly and the atmosphere is always relaxed. It's worth the drive and the poor parking. It's worth a lot!

I've been coming here for over 25 years. Some years I visit more than others. My husband is really addicted to the fries. He loves that they are meaty inside. They are crinkle cut. We always get the cheese steak. Its good. We bring the kids after the soccer game and all the boys love it. It is bare bones. You do not go here for the ambiance. This is a joint, totally not fancy. This was my first cheese steak 30 years ago. Never had a cheese whiz OMG. I still dream about this sandwich. I wish I wasn't 700 miles away. I worked across the street for 10 years and the pizza or sandwich have never changed, it's just people who eat there that change. You will always remember your first love. The Broiler, with its plain cafeteria booths and chipping and worn down paint, may not be the prettiest girl at the bar but goddam does she go down easy. What you have here is nothing but an old-fashioned inner city flat iron grease trap. The fries are krinkle cut and crispy and the cheesesteaks are exactly how a cheesesteak should be; messy, melty, greasy, and just overall bad-for-your-health. I usually get that or the sausage and cheese which is equally just as guilt inducing.

I am always in search of " the best" steak and cheese, and after a few years of searching, I have found it at the broiler. It's basically 2 meals in 1 if you get a large. You get a ton of fries also. What I truly love is I think it taste even better when you eat your left overs.

This place is awesome! I have to admit, the vintage-looking sign is what drew me in and I just knew it was going to be good. The tables and booths remind me of a roller skating rink snack bar, but in a good way! The ordering system is a little strange (subs on the left, pizza on the right), but it works. The staff is friendly. I grew up in the Philly area, so the VA steak and cheese concept with lettuce and tomato and pickles is still pretty foreign to me, but it is good regardless. The pizza is also outstanding. I live down the street from here but am going to be moving soon...The Broiler will definitely be missed!

Kind of feel like I stepped into an old Philadelphia-area deli or sandwich joint. Haven't tried the pizza, but the subs here are damn good and even better for the price. This place is absolutely no frills - you order, eat good food, and that's it. Service? Nope. But who cares when you have a steak and cheese this good? The only thing that I knock it down for is the crinkle-cut fries. Not a fan of them anyway, and I feel like they were just a little bit undercooked. If they solve the fries, they'd get 5 stars. The steak and cheese, though...man it was good. And it's close to my apartment, so I know where I'm going for my sub fix from now on.

The Broiler in Arlington may not look like much from the outside but it is one of Columbia Pike's most popular restaurants. It is one of my go to places on the Pike for lunch as their sandwiches are to die for (especially the cheesesteak, best I have found outside of Philly). Also, the fries are always cooked to a perfect crispness that makes them an amazing side item to your sandwich. FYI the subs are huge so only get the footlong if you have a major appreciate.

Went with my three other people. We ordered two large mushroom and cheese sandwiches and ended up having an "small" sandwich left over for the road. One order of crinklecut fries was plenty for all of us. For a steak and cheese place, the portions are generous especially compared to any overpriced cheesesteak offerings from Subway. Don't go for the ambience, go for the food - as it should be.

Went to the Broiler based on the 4 star rating, and was very disappointed. Ordered a Cold Cut Sub, available in 6 and 12 inch sizes. The sub roll was large with lots of bread, and tasted like something loaded with preservatives and could have been baked a week ago. No mayo, which is fine, and the meats were very average, with the flavors muddled. They poured on some kind of bland salad dressing, some lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. I have never had a pickle on a cold cut (or Italian) and would not again. There were no hot peppers, or vinegar. Overall, I took about 3 or 4 bites and it went in the trash. If they use the same rolls for their steak and cheese, I can't imagine how it could be compared to a good Philly Cheesesteak, which come on nice light, airy rolls, baked fresh.

I've been coming to the broiler for YEARS !! Their PIZZA IS GREAT !! So much better than LEDO'S! My order is ALWAYS a large Italian sausage and pepperoni pizza... This was suggested to me by a local who has been going here for years! The staff are polite and professional. I came here the day I moved here with my parents and we ordered a large spicy sausage and pepperoni pizza. It was different in a good way. The crust was thin and crispy and the pizza was rectangular. I'm here for the cheese steaks, never tried the pizza. The steak subs are above average for the DC metro area, but not Philly league. However, when I need to eat while traveling Pike, it's a great place to stop. I get a mushroom cheese steak plain. There's only one place better I've found in NoVA is in Del Ray. The Broiler has better parking, more seating and later hours in its favor. Certainly beats the fast food joints along the same stretch of road.

Among the things The Broiler doesn't offer are a web site, valet parking, reservations, vodka martinis, a dress code and Limoges china -- well, any plates at all, for that matter. What The Broiler -- located on Colombia Pike just south of Glebe Road in Arlington - does offer is the best sandwiches in the Eye of God! Good pizza, too, but you'll rarely catch me wasting valuable stomach RAM on pizza when a Broiler sausage sub, cheeseburger sub or steak sandwich are within walking, driving or flying distance. Their steak subs beat the pants off the best Philly Cheese Steak. And how good is the sausage and cheese sub? Lemme tell you: When either The Little Woman or I would come back to Washington on business or home leave during our eight-year stint on Taiwan, here was the drill: The lucky traveler would land at Dulles or National -- usually a jet lagged wreck after the 26-hour flight. He or she would then rent a car, throw the luggage in the trunk and head for The Broiler. Once the luscious combination of spicy, homemade sausage, fresh, lightly grilled bread and lettuce topped with a just-right dollop of mayonnaise came off the grill, the traveler chowed-down, right? Wrong! Instead, the sojourner went over to the payphone in the corner, called the stuck-in-Taipei spouse and took the first bite at a volume sufficient to transmit the sounds of chewing and savoring over international telephone circuits at $2.45 a minute. We're cruel people, but we know our sandwiches!

I ordered a sausage and olive pizza today. I was really excited for the cheap hot pizza but half way through eating the pizza with the bf we found green spots on the bottom of the crust. I'm no expert in pizza but it really looked like mold, the kind you find on bread. I called the restaurant and the manager told me that it was a natural reaction from the pizza pans because they are non-aluminum pans and that it would be impossible for there to be mold because they make the dough every morning. The pizza tastes fine but i really don't see how the green spots could be from the pan, especially since the spots are pretty deep in the crust and not just on the exterior. I posted pictures so you can see for yourself.

It is funny to me that this place has so many stars! I mean, it's an okay place, but I don't see why people get so excited about it. I have been here a few times because my boyfriend wanted to eat fried things. I have had the meatball sub and the steak and cheese. Both were good but not great. The crinkle-cut fries are okay, but a bit cardboardy tasting and sometimes too greasy. The atmosphere is one (tiny) step up from bus stop diner, and the tables and windowsills are always kind of grotty and covered with other people's old crumbs and salt. I'm not super picky about cleanliness, but they could wipe down the tables once an hour! And clean the ketchup squeeze bottles, please. Actually the one great thing about this place is that they have that crushed-pellet ice, like Sonic. So chewable! And no one has it anymore.

WOW. my friend took me here today after raving about going here with his coworkers. THUS, i had never read yelp and went in trusting this guy...and wooooooooooweeeeeeeeeeee was he right!!! We got the large steak & cheese with green peppers, onions, and mushrooms and light mayo...wowzers!!! Super fresh, didn't feel greasy and the bread was good. great meat & the cheese! wow! everything was amazing. The french fries were fresh from the fryer and went perfectly with the sub....hey, if you're going to go unhealthy, you might as well go all the way right?? I'm definitely going to be back to get the steak & cheese again as well as try the pizza...I saw it on someone else's plate and it looked S C R U M P T I O U S! I love these types of shops...they've been around forever, prices are good and they even kept the pacman machine from years ago!!! The Broiler is an insider, locals only joint. It's a bit further down Columbia Pike than most people that don't live there venture. In a boxy, 70's style orange building, it's hard to miss, but I can imagine how many would drive by and never notice it. The pizza is that typical Ledo/Pizza Pantry/Mario's style pizza. A little thin, a lot greasy, with sauce that is sickeningly sweet like ketchup. Some people like this style. I don't. That's fine, because they happen to have one of the better Philly Cheesesteaks I've had in DC. Lacking Cheez Whiz, it still manages to capture the taste I want in my cheesesteak, and all at an affordable price. The only one better in this area is the Del Ray steak joint down Mt Vernon towards Braddock Road Metro. I'd also highly recommend the crinkle cut french fries, which for some reason, taste exceptional. If you'd like to feel like a real Arlington insider, this is a place to name drop. It's more than a kitschy place, it is seriously serving up some good, fatty, delicious food.

They layer some topings under the cheese on the pizza so when you think it's missing you'll find it covered under a layer of cheese, meat on top. Good portions small and large only. Philly cheese steak subs are on point, they give you like 2 subs when you order a large one which is niiice, more than enough for 2 to share plus a pizza of course.

These fellas aren't playing... this is a seriously good cheesesteak. It's not fancy.. it's a little building in the middle of a high traffic area.. but SO worth the trip. I live in Shirlington and often drive up to C'pike just for my "Broiler" supplement. It's one of those places that are so good you're excited to find someone that hasn't been so you take them and impress them with how well you "always know the incredible little spots". Go there with confidence.. and understand that a large is simply two subs.. be very careful trying to eat two of these things.. ;)

This place is an institution in Arlington. I've been eating broiler pizza since I was born. Literally. It's been built into my genetic code. It is a dive because it's been there forever. I've seen people pull up in front and get their picture taken. I'm giving it 5 stars for the sausage pizza. Large sausage pizza is as good as it gets. They make they're own sausage mix there and prepare yourself, because you'll be enjoying it the next day. It's spicy and a staple in my family's diet. A friend of mine, who now lives in NY emailed me the other day and said he stepped in an elevator and it smelled like someone had burped up Broiler. It brought back great memories for him. The large pizza is a rectangle and the crust is fabulous and thin. Everyone here seems to be talking about the steak and cheese sub. We always order a large to go with the pizza. It's best with everything on it (don't forget hot peppers.) However, I've had a few over the decades that have not been up to par. In those cases, the meat had too much gristle. We complained, and promptly got free ones on the next visit. Sometimes the meat vendors change and it does effect the quality of the product. Just let them know if you aren't satisfied. I should own stock in this place.

There are a ton of rave reviews for this place on Yelp, so I thought I'd try it out for lunch. As everyone says, it's a little hole in the wall, but that's no biggie. Some of the best food comes from sketch places. The guy at the counter was nice enough, and there's even a TV showing ESPN to watch, or an old school Ms. Pacman arcade game to play if you so desire. But on to the food... I can't testify to the pizza or the fries, as I only ordered a steak & cheese and a lemonade. The drinks are served with crushed ice, which is probably not all that special to anyone but me. It took maybe 5 minutes to prepare, so the wait wasn't bad, and it was piping hot when I got it. I was really excited to bite into this steak & cheese after everything I had read, but it was rather anticlimactic. The texture of the meat wasn't the best, but more than anything else, I was disappointed in the flavor. Simply said, there wasn't much. It didn't seem like there was any seasoning whatsoever on the grilled meat, and they relied solely on the mayo-grease mix to provide flavor. It wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't noteworthy like everyone here makes it out to be. I may return at some point to try the pizza, but I won't make it a point to go soon. I need to get the smell of grease out of my work clothes first, anyway, as it was permeating the air in that hole and is now funkifying my office.

Read all the hype and got the cheesesteak. Thought it was a bit expensive (over $12 after tax for a foot long) but when they handed me to sandwich to go, it must've weighed over a pound. Tons of steak and enough onions and peppers to compliment. I got the hot peppers which were disappointingly mild. The bread was really good, not to soft but not to tough. As for the meat, it was lacking flavor and was a little tough. Expected the meat to be more tender and flavorful. Not a bad cheesesteak, but not the best I've had in the city.

Coming here based solely on the existing reviews has reinforced my assumption that the majority of Yelp reviewers have no idea what they're talking about. I blame no one but myself for coming here with such high expectations. Comparable to Philly's? The best steak and cheese hands down? Please, this was more like the worst. I don't mind that the place is a hole or ghetto, my issue is with the food. Let me start with the fries; they're from costco. If you want the best fries in the neighborhood, take a trip to Burger Joint. As far as the steak and cheese, it's below-average at best. Tasteless, overcooked meat, standard provolone, and sub-standard bread is what I received tonight. To make matters worse, I came with a friend who's eaten at both Geno's and Pat's. We didn't even finish half our food. Listen up people, don't come here for the steak and cheese thinking you'll be getting something special. The quality is low and as far as taste, it might as well have come from any random cafeteria or deli with a grill.

Some of the best mom 'n' pop pizza in the DMV area. Somehow, it tastes like baked mac and cheese, but still pizza-licious. I've been going here for years, and now can fortunately go more often as I work in Arlington and live in Old Town, so the Broiler is kind of on the way home. The large pizza is a bit smaller than what one might be used to in a large; if you have two hungry piglets it won't be enough. I usually pick up two large cheese to feed three, or even two--next-day lunch is always on the agenda anyway, isn't it? Pizzas here are rectangular, so you'll get a few crust-less squares, always a bonus. A bigger bonus is that there's an old-school Ms. Pac Man machine here. Biggest bonus? The high score is lower than my record. Looks like I'll be bringing quarters next time.

I wish I was closer to Arlington because I love the Broiler. One of those been in the neighborhood for awhile places that has 1980's charm to it. I usually get the sausage sub. The sub has a bit of a spicey kick to it but its just great. Their pizza is right on par as well. I absolutly love the fries. This is defianetly one of those greasy but good places, real stick to your ribs kinda food. If you get the large sub they cut it into 4 pieces, so you can eat the first half one day and save the second half for the next day. All around great place.

As others said, this is one of those "local joints" that the Travel Channel should really visit one day. There's an old school feel to it since there's a dirty but clean ambience in the restaurant and there's very little parking. The staff are friendly and they all wear aprons! I always get the mushroom steak and cheese or cheesesteak with everything on it and I'm never disappointed! Everything is reasonably priced. Also, they aren't shy with the fries! MM! OH, also when getting the drink, the lemonade iced tea (1/2 lemonade 1/2 iced tea) is a good choice! Pizza is also good, but pretty oily. Overall, this would be one of my favorite spots. There's only two words you need to know - Chicken Philly (called chicken and cheese there). Don't even consider anything else besides the fries, which are also good. YUM.

Yummy subs and fries. staff is very nice and friendly. I really like the hamberger sub and a side of fries. good when you have a bad case of the munchies and don't feel like paying a bunch of money for yuppie food futher down columbia pike. could use a someone to clean the tables and windows every few hours but otherwise good spot for subs.

First time visit and I was pleased. I absolutely love the retro vibe in this place. Took me back 20+ years. I even played a little Ms. Pac-Man while waiting. I got the steak and cheese, my buddy got a pepperoni pizza. The steak&cheese was very good. Have I had better, sure. But it was still damn tasty. The pizza reminded me of the ones I used to make at home as a kid. Rectangle baking sheet style and served up nice and greasy. Overall, the pizza was a better choice because it was unique to the area. Crushed ice for the coca-cola products was a nice plus. Overall, this was a nice find and I'll be back soon.

Got a thing for Mom n Pop shops? Check Like a cool vintage looking place? Check Want food that'll absolutely leave you craving for more? Check! Head on down to the Broiler! They've got a wide variety of goodies on their menu. The 2 things that you absolutely cannot pass up are the Pizza and the Cheesesteaks. They are resonably priced, the staff is very friendly, and its almost like a blast from the past when you visit. They've even got those cool old school Orange wood style bench/booth looking things. You'll totally dig it! Head on down to the Broiler for your next meal!

Went here due to the overwhelming responses from here. This place is pretty good. I ordered the cheesteak and it was almost up to par with an average cheesesteak from philly. The sandwich was a bit greasy but definitely the best cheesesteak I have had in Northern Virginia. The place reminds me of Crowns Fried Chicken in Philly

I came in here expecting a great steak n cheese, cuz I've been craving one. Turns out I dont see what the hype is all about. Got me a small steak n cheese $5.35 n fries $2.00....the sub,ok nothing like to die for like other reviewers and the fries are old and dry...I came here in the evening time and it's a scary feeling even with a police officer inside waiting for his food, feels like I'm in south central LA...I recommend going during daytime. I gave them an extra star cuz they have my favorite childhood arcade game "ms pacman" and yup I got the high score while waiting for my food. I still got it after all these years!!!!!! Any challengers out there???? Didn't think so...hehehe

This place is still as good as gets. I have eaten here since I was a child and coming back was like a taste of home. The Broiler was around before people started talking about Lido's, Geno's or Pats. The flavor is still as good as it was over 20 years ago. Staff are friendly and great. I love them just the way they are. I had steak and cheese and fries and it was tasted so good that after sharing some with my sister she now has acquired a taste for them too.

Mi novio y Yo frequent this place. I love love love their pizza! I am from Jersey so I know pizza, trust me :). It is delicious. They are quick and friendly. It is AFFORDABLE! I always get a large pizza with extra cheese and pepperoni and mushrooms on one side and sausage and olives on the other. It is always no more than 11 bucks. This place satisfies this recessionista :).

The Broiler's place's business is exactly what it looks like - good subs. It's no frills, but I've found that fast-er food restaurants with frills, the food isn't great. The service is good - no waiting, no haggling. And lastly, the portions are generous for the money. I haven't tried the pizza yet. Update in 2010 - pizza was okay - sauce could have more Italian seasoning.

The Broiler is the archetypical greasy spoon. My gotos, in order, are: BREAKFAST *Hot* sausage, eggs and American cheese sub with fried onion. The sub is clutch when I know I'll be working on my car or around the house and want a meal that'll last me through the morning. Their breakfast sandwiches on toast are a great bite and a great value for real food. My only beef is that if you want any sort of starch along with a breakfast sammich, you're relegated to crinkle-cut fries. I'd much prefer hash brown patties or little hash brown nuggets. PIZZA The pizza is relatively unique and definitely the only one of its kind I've had in the NoVA area. The large is approximately 10"x16," obviously rectangular in shape. The sauce complements the pizza well and doesn't detract from the combo - it just works. My goto toppings are pepperoni and *hot* sausage, that's it!!! STEAK AND CHEESE Usually just a regular-sized steak and cheese will do me fine. I like mine with 'Merican cheese and fried onions only. I might squirt on a little ketchup, but that's it. Lettuce, tomato, and mayo on a hot sub are for the birds!!! You may have noticed how I've tried to highlight the *hot* sausage. Apparently the same man has been mixing the sausage for quite some time now and in my opinion, it makes their breakfast subs and pizza stand out. You can tell the variation week-by-week with the difference in heat as sometimes the sausage could barely have a kick and others it'll make ya sweat!!!

This is your basic hole in the wall, greasy sub/pizza shop. I've had their Steak & Cheese, French Fries, and Pizza. Don't get the pizza. The pizza is a poor copy of Ledo's style pizza. However, their Steak & Cheese is good. It's typically served with provolone but I always order it with American, because it's the closest thing to a real Philadelphia Cheese Steak. I'm never going to order anything else from this place because they have a limited menu, with only 4-5 basic subs, pizza, and fries. There is so much to chose from in the area that I have my preferred pizza & sandwich places. However, a good Steak & Cheese is hard to find and this place is better than most. They also have crinkle-cut french fries that are pretty good too, but most of all the Steak & Cheese is the best in Arlington, which isn't saying very much.

The Broiler, you're an old dear friend. I grew up about four blocks down Monroe from it and it never let me down. I've been going there since the mid-eighties. Just a fantastic South Arlington place that some people are scared to go in and that's one of the reasons I love it. Before they changed owners the staff for years was the same and familiar. My favorite t-shirt that a guy working there would wear was a drawing of a hand with the middle finger up and said "Words fail me". Seriously, how great is that?! You could go to The Broiler and play Ms. Pac Man or Tron. You could get a bomb Steak and Cheese and crinkle cut fries, or on a hot summer night get one of the best soft serves you can find. It's been a couple of years since I've been but I'll be back. Any place that has Wakefield football pictures displayed is right with me.

[3.5 stars] The Broiler is one of those small, greasy spoon type places that seem to always catch my eye. They specialize in pizza (I have not yet tried) as well as burgers and cheese steaks. I usually enjoy the steaks myself, which I'd classify as good to better than most. Be sure to try the giant crinkle cut fries. Personally, I love them because they remind me of the ones I used to order at the bowling alley snack bar when I was a kid. To sum it up, the Broiler is perfect after a hard days work or a few frosty ones.

I'll agree with the other poster - this place is a secret delight. It's been there for years and is a mainstay of LA (lower Arlington). As stated, the cheesesteaks are solid and those fries are amazing.

A friend of mine who grew up in Arlington showed me this place. BEST steak and cheese I ever had! To me, it's like the Five Guys of steak and cheese. Never had the pizza so can't comment on that. I have tried real steak and cheese (whiz) in Philadelphia, but it was dry and I didn't care for the taste of the whiz cheese.

This place is super secret and I ALWAYS stop here on my way into DC. It is a neighborhood secret weapon. The crinkle cut fries are a dying delicacy with the newfangled "fresh cut" or "battered" fries which I loathe. Few places do it like this one. Meatball subs are amazing. I have not tried the pizza but it looks great. GO GO GO!

The Broiler is not an Arlington secret, but it is as good as it gets for steak and cheese subs in the area. When you walk in, you can't help but feel like you're going back in time. You see the Ms. PacMan machine in the corner, the countertops with the laminate chipping off, the tables with the bench seating and the pictures of the many local celebrities hanging on the walls. The only negative is if you have to use the bathroom, it's not the cleanest and the door doesn't really lock shut for privacy but... the food more than makes up for it, and you can use your own bathroom at home because most people get their food to go. All in all a good place to eat if you're looking for quick quality sandwiches and pizza. It's not gourmet, but if you're looking for gourmet at a sub and pizza shop, your standards are a little high.

I ate here for the first time for lunch today. The steak and cheese was pretty good and less greasy than I imagined. Still greasy, but not ridiculously so. I got the fries based on other reviews but they were sort of whatever. A 6" sub, fries, and a medium coke cost me $9.76. I could do without the fries though. They were $2, average tasting, and there were too many of them to eat. A good option if you want a cheese steak, but not something I will lust after. I'll have to go back and try their pizza.

I have eaten at the Broiler for nearly 40 years and while I think they could use a better quality meat, it is not fair to compare the Broiler's steak and cheese (or any steak and cheese, for that matter) to a cheesesteak - they are two entirely different things. A true cheesteak is made with whiz, while a steak and cheese have provolone and mayo. And yes, I, too, have eaten at Pat's in Philly, so I know what an authentic cheesesteak is like. The Broiler has a unique pizza that does not compare to Ledo's, except for the rectangular size. I live 50 miles away from Arlington (and 5 miles from a Ledo's) and would make a special trip just to get a Broiler pizza, that's how much I love that pizza!!!

greasy is all I can say but it's so good. steak and cheese is good but I really like their pizza. they also give you a good portion of fries. prices are very cheap here. everything is freshly cook to order. parking isn't really good here. also try the fruit punch it's really good

If your in the area and want to reminiscence about the old days, this is probably the place to go. The facility looks a bit out of date and poorly maintained from the outside and inside however the cheese steak is EXCELLENT!! If you order a large, they will give you two 6" subs which is pretty convenient and a preventative way of keeping you from gaining weight, that is if you have any self control. I sure don't!
