While in town, I wanted to try a new place and a friend of mine recommended Sorak, so I headed over there with a friend from Korea and his Chinese buddy for dinner. When I pulled up, no parking space was available... so I just parallel parked the wait time was 15 minutes, but we got seated quicker, which was nice because we were hungry. After reviewing the menu, we opted to go with Haemul Jeongol.... for $37, we expected this dish to be superb! I also ordered the bossam and we each ordered different beers. The waitress told us that the burner on our table didn't work and all other tables with working burners were being used.... so we told her to cook it full in the kitchen and bring it out. While we waited, I over heard other waitress yelling at the busboy... telling the guy to take tea and cold water to certain tables while he was busy cleaning up a table... then the guy wanted to clean up the mess first, but the waitress got mad and started to raise her voice in front of other customers.... so this was our entertainment while we waited.... Bossam - not worth the $34 we paid.... the pork was luke warm and the pig feet they included were too hard to eat... ON top of that, the waitress forgot to bring out salted shrimp and dipping sauce until we were half way through and we HAD to remind the waitress for it... she just commented, 'oh I forgot' and it took another five minutes to get it. Haemul Jeongol - not worth the $37 we paid... there were few pieces of fish, couple mussels, shrimps and clams with one baby octopus and veggies... we found more udon noodles in the soup then seafood.... The same dish in Ann Arbor, MI costs around $35 and it has 5x more seafood offerings then at Sorak... Beyond Disappointment.... DON'T GET IT! Food - overall decent. The banchan's were okay as well.... we kept asking for more as the waitress told us to ask if we needed anything else... after asking for more banchan's, she started to get annoyed.... but we kept asking. Service - SLOW... 4 waitress working the restaurant, one food runner for the entire place... the food runner kept bringing out food and left it on the other table so our waitress could place it on our table... the problem was - our waitress was no where to be seen... she was too busy. The food runner also brought foods we didn't order ... but they figured things out and went to the right table. Smoke Issues - while we were there, many of the hood systems for the BBQ weren't working... the waitress kept grilling the meat for the customer... and to remedy the smoke that was filling up the restaurant, they opened the front door to let the cold air in.... freezing the customer as well. Overall - decent, but don't go when it's busy... service is slow and if you keep on asking for more banchan's, except the waitress to start getting annoyed with you. They also need to train the wait staff not to yell at the busyboys in front of the customers!! Sorak will not be on my top 5 place to go again when I make a return visit.

It was really bad. I can only think of McDonald while having lunch buffet there. The place was packed with Korean customers and it was only 1:15 pm, middle of lunch time, and yet there was no food. It turned out that the owner was placing as little food on buffet tray as possible. Only 10 piece of BBQ beef at a time, quarter full tray for chicken dishes, many empty sushi trays. And yet, it was about $15/person I am uploading the "nothing to eat" trays. Unless the owner decided to truly serve the customers.. Not going back.

The last few visits havent been very good. Not sure whats going on but the quality of the food has gone way downhill. We went this past Saturday and waited 10 mins for our drinks! Our pancheon and appetizer had already been served and we had to ask 3x for the drinks to come. Sorrry but theres too many korean restaurants that are a lot cheaper and give you better food/service.

I can't believe people give this shitty restaurant 3-4 stars. They served rotten foods on my birthday, so we complained and asked for a replacement. Their manager disallowed our request for the inedible foods, so I had to report them to an authority. We will never go to Sorak again!

*3.5 Stars* Most of the dishes here are pretty standard and nothing super special. BUT their Mul Naengmyun (cold buckwheat noodles in chilled broth w/ vinegar and hot mustard) is the BEST I've had. I could seriously eat this every day in the summer. The icy cold broth and chewy noodles are super refreshing and easy to digest 'cause of the vinegar. Slightly sweet yet savory, tangy, with tender pieces of beef, sweet pear, radish kimchi, and boiled egg *see pic.* So good! Go get this!

Tasty! Sat in the back room with a group and have a little button to push whenever you need service! They are very responsive! Had meat! Seafood pancake! Kalbi! Casserole/soup. And it was so much food. The meat comes in decent sizes, but if you don't order anything else... you might need more. They cook it for you and put it on plates for you to eat. They also have a good ventilation system. My clothes didn't smell of bbq at the end of the night! Bonus! Beef good. Pork belly good. Seafood pancake loaded with shrimp and a few scallops. Tasty. Everything else cooked well and good. See pictures.

Sorak Garden is yet another Korean restaurants that does sushi, KBBQ, and serves a wide variety of entrees/soups. My family dines at this restaurant frequently as it has a nicer ambiance that most Korean restaurants around Annandale. They also have an AYCE lunch buffet, which is quite popular. I've never had it myself, but whenever I drive by, the parking lot is packed during peak lunch hours. I've had their samgyetang (chicken ginseng soup) many times and the taste/quality varies. Their bibimbaps are also a hit or miss. I would recommend avoiding their nigiri and sticking to their rolls if you're really craving sushi. My parents have ordered their nigiri a couple times, and the freshness of the fish is highly questionable. Sorak Garden is best known for their galbi, and they enforce a 1 serving per person rule, which means that if there are four people present, you're expected to order 4 servings of meat. I also get their naengmyun, which is by no means delicious...but I make do with it because eating galbi and naengmyun together is kind of habitual for me. As you can see, I'm quite indifferent about Sorak Garden. There's nothing on the menu that stands out to me in particular; I just eat to eat when I'm there...mostly to appease my family's wishes. Service is usually pretty good, but if you come during the lunch/dinner rush, it gets very difficult to flag down a server. I recommend bringing those new to Korean food to Sorak Garden. They have something for everyone there, which makes for a good introduction.

The restaurant smelled like a wet rag and service was abysmal. I had the dinner there a few times but the inconsistencies in the flavor of the marinated kalbi stopped me from going back. Then I was forced by family members to go for lunch and it was horrible. I got the naeng myun and kalbi special. The portions were small and the kalbi seemed to be leftovers from dinner.

They have the best neng myun in Annandale. Their noodles are so chewy and their broth - you can taste the beef broth! So yummy! Their lunch buffets are great too - for $14 you get galbi, sashimi, ttukbokki, and various dishes. Great value.

Vegetarian food review only (sort of). So after going to another restaurant in the area and realizing it is now closed on Sundays, two of us decided to stop by this place. I always see the parking lot full of cars, so I was interested to eat here. Considering this place does Korean barbeque, I called ahead to find out if they have vegetarian items (I am not fully vegetarian, but my dining companion is). The woman quickly assured us that they could cater to our needs. We were quickly seated and asked for our drink order. The waitstaff was very prompt - our hot tea was filled several times - and it was nice to not be interrupted during our meal. We ordered the vegetarian bibimbap and the tofu soup. Both were pretty good - the tofu soup is spicy and stays hot because of the bowl it is served in. It's served with rice to help with the spice. I wish it didn't have so much oil though! It's totally not necessary. The bibimbap was better than I've had at other places in the area. It was steaming hot, and the vegetables were well-cooked. The sides were decent as well - the miso soup, kimchi, and another sour brown vegetable were the stand outs. The red sauce was good to mix into my bibimbap. At the end of our meal, we got a very sweet and icy drink as a dessert. It's super tasty and refreshing! A few issues: I thought it was interesting that our waitress steered us away from getting the vegetarian porridges. I guess they had meat-based broths. And actually, my bibimbap seemed to have been made in a seafood broth. It definitely tasted fishy towards the end. That was disappointing. This place also offers a sushi buffet, but it's only during lunch time on weekdays. I wish this was on the weekend too. Lastly, we ordered two entrees and hot tea. Including tax/tip, the bill came to $30. That is way too much in my book. Bottom line: if you're truly vegetarian, do not come here. I think all of the broths use meat or seafood. If you have no dietary restrictions, this is a decent place to get traditional Korean food.

Warning: This is a Korean-Food-Noobie's review. We came here on New Years day which probably was not the best choice in terms of meal pricings as well as availability of certain specials/dishes. And well, service. Our hostess seemed a bit disorganized and rushed but I don't blame her since it was busy. For example, she took our orders for drinks and then another lady had to take our orders for drinks again until we actually got our drinks.. and etc etc. But the whole time she was at least very smiley which I guess made up for some of her minor mistakes if you're a warm hearted person like myself. When it came to the food, the sides were eh, the food in general was alright. All in all, we've had better. I felt a pang in my heart when I saw that my dad who has quite the appetite was served his soup dish that was barely enough to feed.. a four year old me. Poor dad. Not only was he malnourished by the end of this meal with a measly three pieces of meat and broth, but so was his wallet due to the dish being $17.99.. Maybe one day I will discover the little things about this place that make it more than average, but maybe not any time soon.

To start off with their Galbi is good. I have only eaten here during dinner on a couple of occasions and Galbi is always something present at our table. I have also tried several other items on their menu but they were average and tasted similar to other Korean restaurants around the area. My girlfriend is a fan of their naengmyun, never trying it before I tried a bite of hers last time and I was not too big of a fan. The noodles were very chewy and were not cut enough. She told me usually they let you cut it yourself however this time they did the cutting ahead of time in the kitchen. I had a very difficult time trying to just take one bite. Standard for Korean restaurants you get a bunch of banchan side dishes. From my experience they give you more variations here compared to other restaurants. If you intend on ordering galbi, they are very strict on how many orders you buy. If there are 3 people then they expect you to order 3 servings, you get the idea. So usually I go with three people and we order 3 servings. 3 servings is definitely enough to feed three people along with one bowl of rice per person. I usually leave filling pretty full but I have to agree that they have reduced the portion sizes now. Back then I remember barely being able to finish the meat, but now it can be easily accomplished. At the end of the meal you get a complimentary sweet rice punch. I like it, but it's probably not for everyone. The service here is alright. It will not be exceptional but it won't be horrible either. If I am craving galbi then this is the place for me to go in the Annandale area, although it can get kind of expensive if the amount of people in your party goes up.

This is the only place that cost $31 for galbi. Kind of ridiculous considering how small their portions are but at least it tasted good.

Beware when eating here. Went as a group for lunch. paying for our meal was a disaster and took forever. - charged us for dinner price instead of lunch price for some dishes. Took forever for them to correct the bill - we gave a combination of cash and cc - wrote out charges for each card. Owner took all the cash as tip (30% tip?!) and charged the 'shortage' to one of the credit cards and accused us of not leaving enough money. None of us will be going back.

I don't see why there are crowd in the restaurant. Food quality and taste are bad and feel they are overpriced when the quality does not meet the expectation. I went there twice led by others. It confirmed me again. I will not select this place for dining ever.

We had the worst experience today They don't know how to serve guests. They made a mistake and forgot one of our dishes. No apologies from anyone , especially the owner who was eating lunch near us. Completely ignored us. The waitress who took our order just went to eat her lunch, instead of making sure that we got the missing dish! How absurd!!!! We will never be back!!

My wife is pregnant and she had craving for some gal-bi (cow ribs) and some neng-myun (cold buckwheat noodles). Usually, Korean BBQ places have the best neng-myun, so we decided to go to Sorak Garden. These Korean BBQ restaurants usually have a combo deal where they sell some neng-myun along with some ribs. The price was $30 for the ribs and an extra $5 for the neng-myun. Both my wife and I ordered the combo. When the food arrived, we were shocked to find that we are paying $30 for two small pieces of ribs. The check out out to $70 before any tip. This is ridiculous. The food for both of us was worth no more than $30. This is a complete rip off. It wasn't just us. We heard other customers who ordered the same dish as us mentioning how ridiculous it was. This place is a total rip off. Stay away. I would rate it 0 stars if I could. How is this place still in business?

Refused to accept Yelp check in offer for $11.99 lunch buffet. They claimed it was forged. Other people on Yelp seem to have found the same thing. Buffet was decent. The Galbi was good, but the Sushi was a little small. Once it got busy the Sushi became kinda scarce. I probably won't come back because of the offer refusal. Just bad service.

  • Scott P.

For an all you can eat buffet, Sorak Garden is A-OK! We got there right when it opened so all the items appeared to have just been put out, which is probably the best way to do an all you can eat buffet, if you do one at all.

    (3)
  • Julia L.

Basically, it's like this. Choose buffet for 13.99 (you can add negnmyun for 5$) Or Choose normal dishes from a menu (these are $12++) And for those saying service is terrible.. Duh. It's a buffet. It's an optional sit down and order restaurant. These korean ahjummas don't know how to explain the coupon thing, but the promotional 11.99 was there when they first opened and then yelp never took it down apparently lol. So don't go unless you're willing to have decent buffet food.

I've become so sick and tired of Honey Pig and Yechon, that this was a nice change of pace. I brought my American friends here for naengmyeon, since this is purported to be one of the best places for it. Not that bad, actually. I still say that the best naengmyeon was when Woo Lae Oak in Crystal City, before they sold out and headed west to Tyson's Corner. Shame. Anyways... Their banchan was very good, their service was very good, and I appreciated the shikhye at the end of the meal, the way a traditional Korean restaurant would do. Would I come back? Yeah, I would, although I must say that I don't find anything about this restaurant particularly outstanding. But they're not that bad. Not that great... but not that bad. Yeah.

Beware of their lettuce, they probably reuse the unfinished lettuce for other customers. First, let me start from the service. This place has the worst service ever. The server who was helping us was not friendly at all. She was giving us an attitude when we were ordering. Then when I made a request, she started walking away when I was still talking to her. I was not happy with her service at all. Then, when i am done with my food, I asked to have a box for my unfinished food, and they asked me "what is the box for?". I said to take my unfinished food. So when I packed my unfinished food and tried the take some lettuce, the lady stopped me. She said "you cannot take the lettuce, you did not pay for it". I was confused, because we definitely ordered Korean BBQ and I thought it comes with the lettuce. I quickly realize there is probably only one reason they don't let you take left over lettuce. I always value good service at restaurants and the service is a key consideration for me to pick a restaurant. With bad service like this, I will never come back again.

I only come here when my white friends suggest coming here. I try to talk them into Honey Pig or even Yechon for korean bbq or korean food. Heck, even Palace down the street is better IMO. But what do I know? I'm just korean right? =) I guess white people and korean people have different palates when it comes to korean food. No, I'm not being racist either. I've said this once and I'll say it again but NO ONE makes better korean food than mom and grandmom. NO ONE! EVER! This is not a debate. NO ONE! Having said that, since mom and grandma don't always cook, these korean restaurants in koreatown are the other options. I hear centerville has good ones too but I have yet to go. The food here is a-ok. Not the best, but then again not the worst. They have a very good refreshing mool neng myn (cold buckwheat noodles), and the bbq is not that bad. Just overly expensive for like three pieces of meat. No bueno! I like my meat! Their fried dumplings are yummy and so are their signature dishes like bibimbap in the hot stone bowl. But then again, no korean restaurant should ever mess up bibimbap. That's like an italian restaurant messing up spaghetti and meatballs. Their sushi was ok too. Better quality than some of the other places I've been to that serve sushi. Next time I'll try their kimchi jigae. That is my favorite and I have YET to find a korean restaurant to have good kimchi jigae. Only me begging my mom will satisfy the craving. If ANYONE knows of a korean restaurant with good kimchi jigae, please let me know ASAP! =)

I came here this past Friday night night with a friend. After reading previous reviews about the place, I was little nervous because there were some consistent complaints that I worried about, but we decided to try it anyway. And I'm glad we did. We made a reservation for a BBQ table. I always see the parking lot full of cars at nearly all hours of the day, but when we entered, it seemed like there were plenty of open tables. The interior of the restaurant is absolutely gorgeous. It's got a great little waiting area up front, and there are private rooms on a separate side of the restaurant that are great for groups. I suspect that these private parties are typically the reason for the parking lot always appearing relatively full. One of the criticisms I've seen in other reviews is for horrible service, but we did not experience this at all. As soon as we arrived, we told them we had an 8:15 reservation, and our table was ready and waiting for us when we got there 5 minutes early. Our servers were always coming back to check on us. They answered our questions without any hesitations, and were happy to assist us and even answer our questions about what the various items were that were laid out in front of us on the table. They also frequently refilled our hot tea every time we would run low without us asking, and were always very attentive. I'm not sure if this is just because we had the reservation, or because the restaurant wasn't super super busy, but I had absolutely no complaints about the service itself. They did turn on the cold air to try and make it "uncomfortable" and hovered a bit when we sat a bit too long while chatting - but I've come to expect that from most Korean restaurants, so I don't hold that against them. Now on to the food: absolutely delicious. We shared sliced beef and pork tenderloins bbq - I had a craving for pork when we went, and it was deliciously satisfying. The kimchi was quite good. Obviously, it tastes more like "Americanized" Korean food - if you're looking for the more truly "authentic" Korean style food, Sorak Garden isn't the place to get it - but it's still very very good, and the prices aren't terrible either. I'm very much looking forward to coming back and trying even more of the food in the future, because I kept smelling other guests' dishes as they came by, and everything smelled so delicious. Next time, I'll certainly come back and try the lunch buffet. Overall, if you're looking for a great little date night out, or you want to take a group of friends, associates, coworkers, etc., out for nice dinner, I'd highly recommend Sorak Garden.

I was really left underwelmed after leaving this place... The sushi was ok... they didn't honor my yelp coupon for a dollar off... I kinda felt like it should have been more of a sushi selection... I didn't like it enough to give it a second chance... I would say just drive a little further to Todai... Trust me... you'll love that place...

We recently had a dinner there and really enjoyed our experience. Having been to a number of Korean restaurants in the area, the BBQ at this place stood out. They grilled our orders at the table. The galbi I was the best I have had. The service was very attentive. The waitress was friendly and readily brought us side dish refills. I have had better tofu soups elsewhere, but the galbi was the best!

Never. Again. Ever. This review is one part complaint about the food, 10 parts about the service. Being a recent transplant from Los Angeles, I was eager to try the various Korean restaurants in the area. I had heard good things about Sorak Garden's neng-myun, so I decided to take my father and mother, who is a cold-noodle junkie, to try out the food. She tried the spicy (bibim) neng-myun and I had the mool neng-myun galbi combo. My father ordered something not memorable. Maybe we were there on an off day, but the asian pear and the meat in the neng-myun tasted downright rotten. I thought it was just mine, but when my mother immediately spit out hers as well, we flagged down one of the waitresses, who during lunchtime were oddly absent. I explained to her the problem with the fruit and the meat, she picked up my bowl, stuck her face in it, and said, "the smell seems ok." Suppressing my overwhelming urge to ask her if she was going to eat my food, i assured her that it was rotten, and asked for a new dish. This woman then rolls her eyes and stalks off to the kitchen, returning with a bowl of cut asian pears and meat. I told her that I didn't want to eat the bowls of neng myun she had given my mother and me with the rotten fruit and meat in the broth, but after several rounds of going back and forth, my mother just ate with my father, and I got a new bowl of mool neng myun. The meal? The broth was from instant soup mix and the noodles were marginal, at best. If this is allegedly the best neng myun in the area, I'll fly back to LA every summer to get my fix. The bill came out, and she had charged me double - for two neng myun and one galbi. The waitress tried to explain that because I ordered two neng myuns, that justified the double combo charge. Had the service not been so terrible, I would have considered coming back for the food. However, given my experience here, I'd rather be served convenience store sushi by a pair of monkeys than go to Sorak Garden again. At least the monkeys would be entertaining and fling poo at each other.

I came for the lunch Buffett today which ends at 2:30 and I arrived at 1:30. All the food was good but they definitely didn't replenish anything and some things were already out. The sushi was fresh and good and there was a decent selection. All the food was good and the service was great. I was a little surprised to see the staff getting food off the buffet at 2:10 when there was still people eating. They also have a menu you can order from and everything looked quite delish! I'd come back and try it again. I knew I was risking going in toward the end of lunch time and kind of wished I'd just gone to Ga Bo Ja down the street.

The food was worth the wait. I had the kimchee jigae soup and loved it. Just the right amount of spice, richly flavored, generous portion with lots of tastey goodness inside. Lunch time banchan (sides) were good but we were only served four. I am used to a wider selection of pickies. They served kimchee, sprouts, spinach and seaweed. My friend had the bibimbab dolsot. It was his first time to eat Korean food. He liked it but thought my soup was better. Service here is very slow. We sat for almost ten minutes before we ever got a menu. I also want to mention the buffet. We arrived 1:15 and I asked about the buffet. I was told the buffet is closed and there is no more food yet I could see plenty of food on display. I didn't really care because I was craving a hot spicy kimchee jigae anyway. Other reviewers have complained about the dubious buffet practices there so you may want to try another place if you are desirous of Korean buffet.

Our group of 8 went here for the first time on Memorial Day for my friend's birthday party. My concern at first was the customer services with all the yelp reviews. And let me tell you; the service was horrible. We rang the bell so many times and they didn't even bother to come. The food was blah. Nothing was good here but the restaurant was packed. However, I would never recommended or come back to this place. NEVER!

We went here the other day and had the lunch buffet. We've been here many times before but never had this happen. The service from the waitress was horrible, actually it was non-service - I asked for a straw and she brought one, that's it we never saw her at our table again. Actually it was the Latino boy that filled up our water glasses only when we were able to wave him down and ask. So we finished and paid and left a $3 tip on the table, a reasonable tip despite very little service. And so get this, as we are walking out the front door ...the waitress follows us out!! and says to my wife in Korean, " ...only three dollars? you're not going to give me more tip?" Can you believe that???

This review is based on my last 3 visits. After visiting 3 times, I understood why there were mixed reviews on Sorak Garden. When it was not so busy, the service was attentive, however when it was busy weekend evening, I ended up cooking my own BBQ, which I didn't mind so much since I prefer to cook it my way. The food was great for all 3 visits, and I would give 5 stars if they started to better manage their wait staff.

One star because i have no other choice to give it NO star. Bad..Bad...Bad..from the service to the food. Never Ever Again.... We went for the buffet and Kalbi was really bad. My 2 years old got charge $7 for a tiny bowl of soup. Not enough food on the hot bar, sushi is very LIMITED to NOTHING to eat....We waited to be seated but other Koreans just cut us and got seated right the way. One man was waited behind us left the restaurant because he was so mad. He was looking for a manager but manager couldn't be found anywhere. The regular menu is better than the buffet. Very disappointed for the buffet.

Hubs and I went to Honey Pig down the road, but 2 mins after we sat down someone managed to nick a sprinkler with a chair they were moving overhead... and flooded the restaurant. Undeterred in our quest for Korean BBQ, we looked up nearby options and settled on Sorak Garden. We were not let down! It appeared as though you could still get food prepared on a grill at your table, though ours ended being grilled in the kitchen. So perhaps we need to ask next time? In any case, we ordered beef dumplings (delicious!), bulgogi (good), and spicy pork tenderloin (the winner of the evening!). The side dishes were numerous, including a couple unidentifiable ones we hadn't seen at Honey Pig (something with cured fish maybe?). The dining room was actually quite beautiful and quiet. I could imagine it being a good date place, especially if your date has not tried Korean BBQ yet. It would be a bit more comfortable than the ruckus down the road. It was a little more expensive than expected, but we had enough leftovers of the pork and bulgogi to make lunch for one of us the next day. Given how busy Honey Pig has been the past couple of times we've gone, Sorak Garden will probably be our new backup!

Check out Sorak Garden during their weekday lunch buffet - while the lot is crazy-packed, and the buffet itself gets incredibly crowded with the elderly, the families, and the other business people in town, they have good chargrilled galbi pieces (some with bones, some with smaller bones, so watch out), sweet ddukboki (the 'spicy' rice cake which was not spicy at all), well-fermented kimchi (I was impressed!), circular kimchi pancakes, fish, salad, and maki rolls. They also have a few cauldron of soups off to the side and white rice in the ricecooker for the taking. Service is pretty efficient, and you can have either hot barley tea or cold tap water. The owners are so nice, and if you're in an AYCE mood for some Korean, this is a solid place. +weekday lunch buffet +includes some chargrilled (fatty) galbi

I love their naeng myun. It is the best naeng myun I had in years. I keep going back for that and galbi. Havn't even tried other things. The service is okay, not bad. Deducted 1 star because it is expensive. A bowl of naeng myuun should cost me $12 but still good.

I like the hwe dup bap here because instead of assorted sashimi you can get just salmon. I think this is their best dish here but probably cuz I love salmon sashimi. Soju is on the expensive side here, like 12 bucks? instead of the usual 10. Spicy codfish soup is good here too. Neng myun (cold noodles) is average here, not bad. Their fried dumplings are average too. The bosaam (pork belly) is not that great here. The bbq is on the expensive side and it's good quality meat but I still like honey pig better. I think I like honey pig better because the meat is more marinated. Service is good here. I've been here 3 or 4 times. I would come back but mainly because there is never a line here for dinner or lunch.

How to turn a 4 star review into a 3 star review in 5 easy steps: Step 1: After we are seated, move us to another table because you didn't realize that we wanted to grill (although the restaurant is completely empty and we clearly said that we were here for K-BBQ). Step 2: Even after we were moved to a table with a grill...you still pre-grill the galbi before bringing it out to us (and BTW, that pre-grilled galbi portion has suddenly shrunken down to half the size of most galbi portion orders...at the tune of $25). Step 3: Only bring us 1 bowl of rice...after we are almost done eating...even though we ordered 3 entrees (and there were 2 of us). Step 4: Don't bother refilling our soda or water. Step 5: After realizing that this was now a solid 2 star dining experience for us, hurrily bring us a pot of steamed egg to try to salvage our experience to bring it up to 3 stars.

This has to be my parent's favorite restaurant in Annandale. I never really see that many young people eating here. They have a bunch of really great items on their menu, especially the galbi (marinated grilled short ribs) and neng myun (cold buck wheat noodles). I really like the dduk mandoo gook (rice cake/dumpling soup) as well. They also offer a lunch buffet during the week which is pretty decent. It includes a variety of Korean dishes (including their galbi) as well as sushi/sashimi. I believe it's pretty reasonably priced ($13?) It's a great place for large groups of people as they have huge rooms in the back to accommdate parties of larger than 10. I've also seen people rent out the room in the very front for even bigger events such as birthdays and wedding rehearsal dinners.

3-stars for the food, but 4-stars for having an awesome exhaust system. This is a pretty typical mid-range korean barbecue place: nice wood interior, lots of big tables for groups/families, decent service, decent food. The service was typical for this type of restaurant: not overly friendly, but efficient at bringing out more panchan and water, and at cooking the meat for you. Speaking of the meat and panchan; the galbi is pretty good quality (not overly fatty and decent portion sizes), and the panchan selection was above average. The prices are about average, certainly not a steal, but not a rip off either. All of that would add up to a three-star rating, but for one thing: Their exhaust system seems to actually be powerful enough for the space. We were there for over an hour, and yet when we left our clothes didn't reek. Inconceivable! Sorak Garden may not be the most amazing korean barbecue, but if you are looking for a slightly more upscale feeling than Honey Pig and/or don't want your clothes to smell like barbecue for hours afterwards, this is a good choice in Annandale.

Overall the food is alright. The taste for all the things are typical and nothing exceptional. I came here for dinner with my family and we all agreed it was okay, but the waitresses are pretty rude. They rush you and are not very good at selling the food. We asked what's the difference between their dishes and for some she said "it's just the name that's different but it's the same." I felt that the restaurant wasn't overly busy to be rushing us, but seeing other reviews that's just how this place functions.

Really bad food service. Expect your dishes to come out at different times. Of the foods I've ate here, I think the kalbi bibimbap and naengmyun are probably one of the better items on their menu. However, to echo some complaints on yelp already, the service is HORRIBLE. It is not just about being slow but the last time I was here, the food came in such odd times!! I came with 4 girls and all 4 dishes came out at different times. I got tonkatsu (which was really bad- do not get this here) and it came out 10-12 minutes before the last persons dish. Two girls ordered bibimbap but one came out about 5 minutes later than the other. It made no sense. It is really unacceptable to have 4 entrees come out at such staggering times. The food is not good enough to make up for this bad service. After this experience, I do not want to go back and will resist when friends suggest it.

We came here for lunch on Sunday. It was quiet. So we received the extensive customer service. I think they were not so busy which worked out well on us. We had Beef Kal Bi. I loved the marinade sauce and the beef was very soft. We had Seafood pancake. It was nice. I think this is pretty nice. I am pretty new to Korean food but I felt that it was okay. But the restaurant is so clean and do not smell BBQ much. i think that was a good plus.

There is one major thing that sets Sorak apart from other K-Spots in Annandale: Charcoal Barbecue. Another difference is the layout and decor. The decor is warm and traditional and the layout shows it is clearly meant to accomodate both large and small groups. There always seems to be a steady crowd but with the semi-private dining rooms, there seems to always be a seat. I've been to Sorak many times with different size groups and am always impressed with their consistent quality, expedient service and the extensive menu. I can't speak to their sushi, but many come just for that as they run regular specials. Definitely recommended to be on anyone's list...especially K-BBQ fans.

I really want to give a better rating, but that wouldn't be fair to the other restaurants I reviewed. Heard a few good things about its lunch buffet, but I came here for dinner and let's just say there are a lot of better places. I think one of the advantage it has over other Korean restaurant is that this place is a lot more spacious. Other than that, I'm not really sure what else I can praise on it. My boyfriend and I ordered a seafood pancake, a bibimbap and a rice bowl with sashimi (don't recall the proper name). The server barely spoke English (not that I have a problem with it, but) and he just wrote down the line items we pointed at on the menu and nodded at everything. My friends ordered a few things, and a relatively expensive dish of pork belly. My seafood pancake and bibimbap arrived, and on the other table, the server was grilling my friend's 4 strips of pork belly (considering a $16 dish, that's $4 per strip!!) and he said it doesn't taste any better than pork belly at other restaurants. I was waiting for a while for my sashimi rice bowl and I finally asked the waiter if they are still working on it, and he came back saying something which I interpreted as they no longer serve sushi for the rest of the day, and I was pretty upset because he nodded at me when I ordered (so I assume he took my order, right?) and made me waited 20 minutes to tell me they cannot make me one.

This restaurant was one of the worst place I have ever been. I went with my friend, her sister and mom (almost 70 years old), the mom had ordered fish and soup combo which came out halfway cooked so we'd asked the waitress to take it back and cook it well done and they took it back to the kitchen and brought us the another fish which wasn't the same fish and was fried instead of grilled. That been said, we asked the waitress if this was the same fish (which we already knew that wasn't the case) thinking that they brought us someone else food, she took the fish back and again brought it back out and told us it was the mom original fish and gave us a dirty look. after completing out meals which I think I can do better even with instant Korean food from the market, we'd asked to speak to the owner/manager and of course the owner is sitting at one of the tables and did not even wanted to come talk to us (We only wanted to give advise on the services and their food quality). So the owner finally came to our table and mentioned that she was sick and that was the reason why she didn't want to come talk to us, and we had told her how disappointed we were regarding the food and service and asked for the check, we received our check and provided the waitress with the CC and while we were waiting the manager went by our table stating what are you looking at (with an attitude in Korean), and used some profanity words in Korean that I can't even imagine using unless you are ready to fight. now remind you that we are all females and my friends mom is almost 70 year old Korean lady and the manger (which I come to find out is the owners son) is not only disrespecting the customers but an elder (Korean at that). We stated that we will never come here again and he said never come back. I was born in Korea and been in the US for almost 40 years and never have I been treated the way we were treated at the Sorak Garden Restaurant. I have been to so many Korean restaurants and have so many Korean friends and family, and this is just so wrong and very disrespectful to Koreans. SHAME ON THIS RESTAURANT AND THEIR PEOPLE. BTW-one of the other tables that had order their food and was waiting also heard what the manager said to us and made their comments about how disrespectful the restaurant was and walked out before their food even came out. This restaurant is not even worth a star.

It's been over a year since last visiting, partly because there was nothing compelling about this place. I heard a while back about their weekday LUNCH BUFFET, but only now got to try it. I must say I was rather impressed with their sushi offering, moreso than the regular food. At $14/person, it ain't too bad, but at that price there are several other AYCE options in the Annandale area. They don't have grilled meats here like at Il Mee or Hee Been, but the sushi was comparable. I think I'll say I'm a fan for now. I would definitely recommend the weekday lunch sushi buffet. ------------- 1/1/10 update ------------- Came here the next day for New Year's Day. They were giving out free dduk-gook for lunch. I'm tempted to give them 5 stars just for that act of community kindness. Anyway we just sat down, asked for the dduk-gook (rice cake soup) which is traditionally your first meal of the New Year, and within minutes our bowl of piping hot soup was delivered. So a Happy New Years shout-out to Sorak Garden. Also baby friendly with diaper changing stations in the ladies room...but I think there wasn't one in the men's room.

First I have to say that this place is not like Honey Pig and it shouldn't. Korean food is not fast food it takes some time to coax out it's rich assertive flavors. If you like BBQ then I would say order the ahn chang sal. It's skirt but has a great chewy texture and is great in ssam. As I said the BBQ is a little pricey but if you really want a treat order the Bul Nak Jungol. Which is bulgogi and octopus casserole. Man its spicy, tangy, meaty, and oh sooo soulful. If this was available in individual size I would be all over it. I love Korean food and never get enough chances to eat it, but when you have a handful of places that really take pride in what they do. Then you should embrace the price and take the plunge. Other dishes here are also good but I have to say the sorak special kalbi and the casseroles are the way to go. IMHO. Cheer and happy eats!

This used to be my go to place for Korean bbq. But when I went with my co workers at the end of June 2013, we were not allowed to grill on the table. The waitress said that it changed policy about two weeks before and everything is grilled by the kitchen on charcoal. Whatever, the whole point of going to a Korean bbq is to grill together and enjoy the meat off the grill. After giving a little thought, I came to the conclusion that the safety inspectors shut down the table grills due to safety issues. I hope they get the table grills back in order because they do have one of the better galbis around the region and by far the best bi bim neng myun.

The first several times I went here, I enjoyed the food, but I thought the service was awful. Around that time, there was a review of this place in the Washington Post (I think) which said the same thing. The funny thing is that it said the food was so good, it actually made up for bad service. I agree. About a week after that happened, I went back and noticed the wait staff was wearing smiley face buttons on their vests. That seemed to signify a change in attitude because that was the first time I had great food AND great, friendly, warm service at Sorak. Every time I go here, I have a great time and eat myself silly. Recently I ordered something new (I don't remember what it was though) and a member of the wait staff, not assigned to my table, stopped as she was walking by. "Oh honey, that's not the best way to eat that. May I show you what to do?" Apparently I was supposed to pour something from bowl A into bowl B and mix it up...anyway, she showed me what to do and that just added to the reasons why I enjoy this place so much. Parking could be better, but I'm not sure if they can do much to improve that. If the parking lot looks like it's totally full, there's probably room for one more so squeeze in there somewhere and enjoy!

We come here only for 2 reasons. 1) Have a large group (including kids) and want a semi-private room so we can make all the noise we want. They also have a large totally private room available for special events that you can reserve. It seats at least 30. 2) People in our group want a variety of Korean dishes and Yechon has too long of a wait. Otherwise, the food here isn't bad per se, it's just that there are places that serve better versions of a lot of the menu items within a 5 minute drive. For example, for better Soon dubu ji gae (soft tofu stew), go to Vit Goel (Light House) where it's more flavorful. For Hwe Dup Bab (raw fish salad), go to Yechon where they give you more variety of fish and greens. For Kalbi Jjim (stewed marinated short ribs), go to Oegadgib, where the beef is more tender AND cheaper by at least $5. Get the picture?

While Korean bbq is not my preferred type of dining, it is my husband's favorite. And, this is his favorite spot in the DC area. So, for all of those who want to know - my husband would readily give this 5 stars, two thumbs up, a Michelin star, etc etc. Now as for me... Over several dining experiences here we've had consistently good Korean fare. The Bi Bim Bop served dol sot (in a hot stone bowl to continue the cooking) is phenomenal. You can't go wrong. The pae jun (seafood pancakes) are also probably the best we've had. The galbi (a sweetly marinated beef) is also excellent - tender with a tangy kick from the marinade. Very, very good dishes. The miso soup was just alright, and the kimchi chige (a soup with tofu, ham, and kimchi) was certainly not okay by me. One spoonful was quite enough for my taste...although others with a more refined palate for appreciating this cuisine love it. I was not a fan of the only dessert I've had here - a rice water dish - way, way super sugary. Yes, even with the fake plants and neon-crazy decor, Sorak Garden is a good bet for Korean bbq fare. It can be nice as a date spot, and it also works with big groups, especially if you opt for the bbq meals.

I did enjoy this place, and I wouldn't mind trying the BBQ. I went for the first time with a friend who's vegetarian so BBQ was out. I got the beef soup which was quite tasty the broth was good, I just wish there was a bit more beef. There were only about 4 small pieces. It is a bit quieter than the other Korean BBQ places. So if you have a hankering for BBQ and you're with the fam or on a romantic date, I'd recommend checking this place out. And the service was also great as well.

Hrm...venturing out on the demand of my parents who wanted kalbi (despite living in Korea), the family trudged over to Sorak garden for a bite. We were seated in our own room, which was nice, and they had a high chair flipped over so we could park Liam's car seat in it comfortably while we ate. The food was ok - nothing spectacular. The kalbi served its purpose and the lady came at timed intervals to flip it and cut the meat. What really torqued me was the naengmyun (cold buckwheat noodles). The broth wasn't nearly as tangy as I like and no amount of vinegar or mustard was enough to make it taste how I like it. Something was just...off. I'll stick with other places but wouldn't refuse if someone else had a hankering for this place.

I came for the lunch buffet. About 20 kinds of sushi, and they had a buffet counter with other Korean regulars dishes... Chopchae, Kalbi.. already cooked of course, kimchee, and about 15 other things which I have eaten plenty of over the years, but I can't match the names with everything. It was a great lunch. I see a lot of people complaining about the service, or less friendly than they would like. They were ok. I mean the seated us politely, I don't know what everybody else was expecting. A back rub? They served the coke in a can. So I guess its not a coke that gets refilled on its own. That would be nice if you didn't have to buy another coke everytime. I mean those fountain sodas are not that expensive wholesale and other buffets have them on tap. I think you can get plenty of water for free though. I had a great lunch. Too many whiners writing reviews in my opinion. ... say grace and thank God. you're lucky you can even go to a restaraunt compared to North Korea. Thanks God.

Went to Sorak for the first time last night. Service - As attentive as any other Korean place I've been to Atmosphere - Kewl. It had very nice large tables that are not too close together. I try the "standard" stuff at new places to see how they compare. Pork BBQ - fab. Spicy, flavorful, cooked in the kitchen because we only placed one order. The panchan was as good as any other place. We also ordered 3 different types of rolls. Only ONE set tasted fresh. The others had hard rice and the "ends" of the group of rolls were even harder. Conclusion: Great place to have Korean BBQ, just stay away from the sushi.

Dear Sorak Garden, I don't know who you think you are but you sure are coming off as a jerk. You have always looked down your nose on your fellow Korean restaurants (those that have been here longer than you have and also made the market that you now are a part of) and treat your diners kind of crappy. You are the somewhat good looking girl that thinks she is really hot. Sure, you have nice decor and okay food but you're too expensive and inattentive to bother with anymore. Though I'm sure you will survive (there will always be people that buy into your appeal), our relationship is over. Regards, Jae ps. you still have my umbrella

I was surprised at some of the negative reviews here, I had to look at all the photos to make sure I had the right restaurant. Maybe the DC yelpers are a really critical bunch and I mean that as a compliment because maybe that is why there are so many great Korean restaurants here. I came here during my recent visit to the DC area. My brother and his family took me here for the Korean bbq (galbi). In Korea, your choice of restaurant is completely dictated by what you want to eat. Apparently you go here to eat BBQ, so that's what we had. It was really quite good, and we were all completely satisfied. Among the Banchans, the spicy crab tasted just like the crab I used to eat in Korea. The server oversaw cooking of the meat, which I tremendously appreciated. Often I am delegated the role of Korean bbq meat griller because my friends think it's more authentic when a Korean person cooks it (I still love my friends). But this also means I often get shafted with only the last few pieces of meat because everyone else cleans it up while I 'cook'. At Sorak Garden, I could eat as much as everyone else. Yay! The spicy cold noodle was just ok, but it didn't matter because we were so stuffed we could barely eat any more.

I've tried Sorak for the 1st time on the New Year's Day for brunch and I felt great to have my first meal of the year 2008 at Sorak. The service was excellent. Very friendly, attentive and just welcoming. The dish I and my friend had was mushroom jun-gol (stew similar to shabu-shabu but instead of dipping ingredients, you just put all in the big clear broth and cook to eat). It was good but Not great. It is a .. healthy feel-good dish so I was happy about it, especially when it warms me up in cold January. Great side-dishes. Recently, I went there again for lunch because I saw the big sign outside of the restaurant 'SUSH-BUFFET'. The sushi-buffet runs from 11am-2pm everyday (except for Saturday) for about $12. Great selections of sushi and hot dishes. I've tried quite a few sushi-buffet in VA, MD and even DC but this place so far provided the best variety and quality of sushi. If you like soba, it's also there (the waitress said it's not available everyday). A few kinds of soups like pumpkin, miso or meat-broth.. dduk-bok-ki is also found in the hot-bar. The buffet doesn't offer BBQ-option (grill at ur table like Hee-been) but you shouldn't waste your time or space on your stomach with Korean BBQ that you can get anywhere anytime when you went there for trying different and variety other dishes. If you are not into buffet, you can order single dish from the menu too. I thought it was pretty good deal and if you like sushi, you should try it.

Can't believe this place! Never order sushi here because they won't even bring it to you till your entire table is done eating! Absolutely ridiculous... Ordered a roll and no one cared to see what was taking so long. They charged me for it even though I told them I didn't want it anymore since it obviously wasn't coming. Never coming here again!

This continues my exploration of Korean restaurants in Annandale. My friend took me to this place, touting it as his mom's favorite place. And if his Korean mother likes it, it must be pretty authentic and good. First thing you notice is the setup of the place, all of the tables against the walls have built in grills, and there are tabletop grills for people sitting at the tables in the middle of the place. We site down, my friend orders a few dishes in Korean, and off we go on a new culinary adventure. First off, they bring out the usual small dishes you always get at a Korean restaurant. I recognized most of the dishes, but there were a few surprises. One dish I especially liked was what I later found out was dried cuttlefish, the meat was chewy, and delicious, almost what I would imagine you would get if you made beef jerky with fish. The kimchi was very good as well, it had a little tingle on my tongue which I was told was because this stuff was actually fermented, not fresh. The second round consisted of a pretty crazy dish, it was described to me as pickled raw crab. The crab was cut into quarters and you just slurped the meat out the body, using the legs like a lollipop stick. This stuff tastes a lot better than it sounds, the crab had a great flavor to it, although the consistency was a little bit like crab jello. The next course was a beef soup, this was extremely tasty, the broth was quite possibly the best I've ever had. The meat was tender, although a bit fatty, but I'm sure that fat played a role in the development of all that tasty flavor. After that the show began. The grill was fired up and they started to cook the meat. We had beef and pork belly. Everything was very flavorful, well cooked, and great. We wrapped the meat in the lettuce leaf, added the onions, garlic, hot peppers and chowed down. After that huge meal, we were stuffed, and only had a little snack of a chilled sweet rice desert. A great way to end the evening. After all this great food, why only 4 stars then? I would have to say it was because the meal was very pricey. This is definitely a special occasion place, not something I could afford to do all the time. But I will look forward to my next visit.

Another traditional Korean Cuisine w/ BBQ Grill capability. There are way too many restaurants like these in Annandale - Little River Turnpike alone, it's hard to distringuish which is better. To me, they're all basically the same - quality, quantity, and price. So to truly differentiate from other competitors in 1 mile radius, you have to have great service, clean environment, and maybe unique interior design to attract younger crowds and non-Koreans. Sorak Garden gets few things but fails on others. They have great clean environment and nice traditional Korean interior design but their service is just borderline failure. Maybe it was just us, I don't know. I've said numerous on my Korean restaurant reviews that service can really be hit or miss with Korean restaurants because they tend to favor large parties who order expensive items and order lots of drinks (typically men in 40s). We were men and women in mid 20s. We order what we want to eat, chit-chat for an hour, and leave with exactly 15% tips. Not exactly what the restaurant want as customers. A group of 6 ordered 4 meats and 2 other entree. We all shared our entrees like a big family. We ordered two servings of Kalbi and two servings of Port Belly. Here is where I mean by bad service. Apparently, Kalbi and Port Belly are grilled on different griller. In order to serve us, the waitresses had to replace the griller to grill two different types of meat. I guess they weren't very happy about it. They encouraged us to order just the Kalbi (maybe they knew that Kalbi were their best and wanted us to enjoy our time). I didn't know. We just ordered what we decided and for a split-second, I saw facial expression I shouldn't see from waitresses. For the whole time, the service was late and very minimal. I drink tons of water when I eat, so I like when they refill my water when I didn't have to call them. Not here. I had to call them every time to refill my water. Although the water was free, when you call them to refill it, you feel bad. Like I said, service was only minus part of our dining. Maybe if we ordered more meat and drinks, it would have been different. Maybe.

Sorak had flavorful pan-Asian cuisine with an emphasis on Korean dishes. The lunch buffet exhibits much variety at low cost, and seating for large groups during rush periods was not a problem. The restaurant's food tastes good, and doesn't stand out, making the restaurant an excellent, albeit predictable, lunch venue. Something for everyone, and nothing that can go horribly wrong; perfect for casual one hour meals.

My dining companion and I went with a Corean friend for an early dinner in Annandale. I would have to say a major draw was the 1,000-point reservation through OpenTable.com :-P All in all, the food was good--easily better than Yechon but not in the league of my favorite Corean restaurants, Woo Lae Oak and Roll House. We ordered two Seafood Soon-Du-Bu and a Beef Bi-Bim-Bap. The Seafood SDBU were heartier and redder (more chili soybean paste?) than Woo Lae Oak's and more substantial than Light House Tofu's. The quality of the seafood was decent but nowhere near WLO's. A good dish overall. As for the Bi-Bim-Bap, it was decent but required more chili soybean paste than I am accustomed to because the dish was a bit blander and under-seasoned than I am used to having. Since I recently had a horribly bland version at Ega in Vienna, Sorak's was much better but still not close to the ones at my two favorite Corean restaurants. How about the ban-chan? It was varied and decent enough to put a healthy amount of a few into my Bi-Bim-Bap. They tasted good but nothing to write home about. The service was probably the first Corean restaurant I have been to that was just plain bad. When I arrived there early with my dining companion, the server took us to Siberia (nearest to the bathrooms), despite the fact that the restaurant was rather quiet with few tables occupied--including many 4-tops available for our reservation for 3. The server insisted that she saved the seat for our reservation. How odd considering it was a 6-seater with a gas grill. We insisted that we move to a better 4-seater near the center of the room. She kept being pushy, but we persisted because we did not want the grill and politely insisted we sit in an empty 4-top in the middle of the room. The rest of the meal went by without any service problems, but this rude service before our meal clearly served to the detriment of our experience. Overall, the food is decent, and if I have to go to Annandale between 3-7pm on a Sunday through Thursday, then it may be worth the trip and 1,000 points. Otherwise, I will go to WLO or Dong A over Sorak Garden in a heartbeat.

When my friend mentioned she had a naengmyun craving, I immediately asked my more knowledgeable friend about where to go. He suggested Sorak, so off we went! We got there and it looked pretty nice inside, but once we looked at the menu, we decided this may be a bit on the pricey side. But we stayed anyway. Even though it was a hot summer day, I was really craving yukgaejang, so I went for it. My friend went for the naengmyun. We were both a bit disappointed. Now, let me just say that yukgaejang is one of my fave soups, and it was definitely not up to par. The taste of the soup was almost too game-y. And when I tried the naengmyun, the broth tasted a bit strange. My friend, the naengmyun guru, said she wasn't too pleased. The redeeming quality was the banchan. Although we had to ask for more (and the waitress looked ever-so-reluctant to do it, and seemed horrified that we were laughing loudly in her restaurant), it was tasty (esp the sweet potato puree)! Probably won't be back anytime soon. There are plenty of other places that are cheaper, yummier, and friendlier.

Just went back tonight and the service was horrible. We waited around forever to get refills on our hot tea and water. The seafood tofu soup lacked broth and was significantly overwhelmed by tofu. Only thing redeeming this place was the seafood pancake. I'd rather go to Yechon, which is 5 minutes away. It's always a sure bet.

This was a totally random choice - coming out of a meeting in Alexandria and driving through to avoid the heinous traffic on Inner Loop. It was lunchtime, I was stopped at the light, and the sign said "sushi buffet." Seemed like a good idea. As I walked in, I noticed the spacious dining room was at least half full ... and I was the only non-Asian. The waitress didn't even speak to me ... just smiled, and said "buffet?" I wondered if she only knew a few basic words in English - but I never experienced any rudeness or service issues that other reviewers have. The food was decent. There was a nice selection maki and nigiri sushi, maybe 8 kinds of each, on the sushi buffet - though the rolls were almost all based on crab leg (presumably the artificial kind). There was also a food bar, with a large assortment of Korean and Japanese foods, from sweet potato or shrimp tempura to steamed pork to noodles to kimchee. As you'd expect from a respectable buffet, everything (that I tried) was decent, but nothing was particularly excellent. If I was in the area, I'd go back ... but don't think I'd go out of my way for it.

I Love LOVE their lunch buffet. About $13 for an all you can eat buffet with sushi, galbi (korean marinated meat) and a lots lots more. The all you can eat sushi is my fav. They have about 7 different types of rolls and 7 different types of other nigri sushi. As for dinner, their marinated galbi, pricey, but very good. Nice interior, kind of pricey for dinner, will revisit often for their lunch buffet.

I don't know why the reviews for the this place are only 3 stars. It's so good! My go-to for a Korean restaurant that serves everything. From soups to tofu casseroles to bbq to sushi! What else do you need ??!! I really like the spicy cod fish soup and the Salmon Lover's Roll is delicious, oh and the side dishes, cold noodles and the bbq isn't bad. JUST EAT HERE PEOPLE. :)

Now this is where you go when your parents are in town and they're willing to pick up the tab. So aside from the price, I give it a five stars (I was able to enjoy it on my parents' expense). Like all good Korean restaurants, they have the grill installed in the middle of the table and a massive vent above it. The kalbi (bqq meat) is great as was the dengchangchigeh (bean paste soup) and the kimchi chigae (kimchi stew). I love my kalbi-tang (meat stew...?) and they did a great job with it. They also have great pajeon as well. They serve a lot in quantity and quality and as always great waitresses/waiters who know how to keep your table filled.

I'm giving this place a bump in stars because some of the negative reviews for this place are a bit unjustified. Many of the reviews about the service I think are more of a cultural issue than anything else. Most restaurants in Asiandale which are Korean Cuisine have in the past catered to a 98% Korean Clientele. Thanks to websites like Yelp it's getting more of a mix now, which means there staffs are used to dealing with a homogeneous customer base. The food here is good, it's not my go to Korean Restaurant, but it is one of the better ones in Annandale. The Lunch Buffet here outshines IL Mee or Hee Been. Because the buffet bar is much smaller than the establishments just mentioned, they have to work harder to provide a pow with limited space. Overall the pricing isn't super overpriced as other people say, it's relative to other better Korean restaurants. Again Asiandale has a proliferation of small dive like "bistro" and post alcoholic consuming Korean Cafe's so they provide crappy food at cheap prices and keep the liquor flowing. It's really not the seen for a Twinkie like me or any other Round Eyes. Because of these places prices seem diluted. Also with the establishment of Honey Pig as a destination and setting their prices far below the rest of the market they have changed the way Asiandale Korean Restaurants do business. (at the end of the day Honey Pig is Good but your still just eating pig belly, should it be expensive?). Overall they do serve good Korean Food. Some of their panchan is a bit lacking but the quality of the dishes is worth the money. Their Lunch Buffet's is a value packed Quick Korean Tasting menu with Sushi. A quick note for yelper Melissa B. I found this new great Authentic Chinese Restaurant in White Flint Mall, it's Called PF Chang's check it out I'm sure you'll love it.

So apparently this place is slightly expensive? I didn't check the prices, but outside of yelp, I've def heard that from other ppl as well. Prices aside, I tried this place with a good friend of mine and the second we walked in and sat down, we were asked if we were ready to order at least 6 times within 3 minutes. No we weren't ready! we ordered a roll, tonkatsu and galbi tang. All were good, decent but completely solid normal korean food. We left and i asked what rating out of 5??? (i had just recently told him about my yelp addiction) and he said 3 and i said ME TOO! i agree! haha would prob go back if other ppl wanted to go, but really nothing too special!

Ok I would give this place a 2.5 star if I can... I just round up. I won't really go to this place again unless I want some Nang Myun. The food was ok but... I dont' really like this place. Why??? WOW this place is stingy with there ban chan. I never had to go to a restauarnt where I had to ask 3-4 times for more banchan b/c 1) it takes a while to get it. 2)each plate has like to bites full... yeah... this is on my... not go to list.

We have been a regular customer of Woe Lae Oak when it was near Pentagon City. We were taken to this restaurant by a Korean couple. There were lots of Koreans so this place must appeal to them. We enjoyed the place but I thought Kalbi was on a tougher side. I liked their Korean pan cake. Over all we are still looking for Woe Lae Oak. They moved to Tyson's and changed their menu completely which I don't enjoy.

Lunch buffet is great I have been there twice. It is very quiet and the food is fresh. The cost is reasonable for lunch. I have never been there for dinner and I am not sure if they have buffets for dinner. The Sushi Chefs keep the bar full and the regular buffet items are also good.

Perhaps the most consistent and versatile Korean restaurant in Annandale, I probably go here more than anywhere else. For this they get a solid 3.5 stars. Pretty much all the Korean food here is good, but nothing extraordinarily good. But definitely above average. Stay away from the sushi, you've been warned.

We went here with a rather large group, and we were eating pretty late. I think we stayed well after they closed. The waiters and waitresses had no problem with this and were very nice and courteous. They were on point with serving all of us and seated us in the back room right away. We ordered a HUGE amount of food. Kalbi (korean ribs), ssam gyup sal (pork belly aka korean bacon as the fiance calls it), soups, etc. The panchan alone filled our table and they were really good about getting us extra as we ate it all up. The food was cooked at our table by one of the waitresses who was very nice and joked around with us as we served it. The galbi was very good, and all the panchan was delicious. The ssam gyup sal wasn't the best ive had, but it was tastey just the same. We ate and ate and ate and couldn't eat anymore. There is nothing negative to say about this restaurant and the food here is wonderful. The decor is a little dated and more traditional which most of my moms friends enjoy, as it sets a more traditional tone. Just be warned that if you come here without older korean women or men, they may not be as nice to you as they were to us. Also, the prices are pretty high...

I am not sure if I have been spoiled by my mother's cooking but I have not been impressed by Korean restaurants in this area. The food is decent here - I have had galbi, pajun, jap-chae (probably my least favorite). The service is actually pretty good for a Korean restaurant. You definitely do not have the red lipstick donned, stoic Korean woman taking charge of the meat with her scissors. I wouldn't mind eating here again but I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

went here this past weekend for the first time in over 5 years. we made a reservation for a party of 7 people in a private room. we didnt get seated til 35 minutes PAST our reservation. this might be somewhat normal at upscale restaurants where they have you wait at the bar but this shouldnt be the case for a family style super casual korean restaurant because they have such large spaces, in particularly this place. we had made the reservation a week in advance. we saw at least 15 people get seated before us (who had arrived to the restaurant after us). we had purposely booked the private room so we would have more privacy and also to have a quieter space..... honestly, you shouldnt take reservations unless you can honor them. you should schedule in "safety time".. after we finally got seated, they gave us an appetizer of japchae (glass noodles with veggies) on the house for having us wait. WEAKSAUCE.... wheres the free bbq or even a round of drinks? the only reason I give this place 3 stars is because their mool nengmyun was good. the texture of the noodles and soup flavor was very good. will i go back though? ....likely not. there are many more korean restaurants to try in nova before heading back to sorak garden..

Not much for vegetarians. The banchan consists of kimchi, potato salad, sweet lotus roots, spinach and bean sprouts, fried kimchi pancakes, acorn jelly, and dried seaweed. I got the Bibimbap, but it was pretty pricey-$12 I think? It came with miso soup, the Bibimbop (they did respect my request to keep the meat out and I appreciate that), and they gave a bowl of sweet rice drink (shikhae) at the end. It's way too expensive to eat here for a poor college student like me--I probably wouldn't come back here, but everyone seemed to enjoy their food.

I've lived in this area for a very long time, and have gone to this restaurant a couple times. I went today, and was completely shocked at the service. First of all, there were rotten vegetables (namool) in my bibimbap. I could smell it going bad, because I have made namool for 20+ years myself, so I told one of the servers. I didn't yell, I wasn't angry, I just wanted to let them know they were serving food that was bad, and just a simple apology. They didn't even take a look at my dish, and said that they made it two days ago so there was no way that it could be rotten. They just walked away. So I talked to the OWNER of the restaurant. Again, I just wanted an apology, but she said it wasn't, and she did not apologize either. I'm still shocked even to this moment about this afternoon. I paid for the check, and I am never going back to that restaurant EVER again. Also, they charge a child who is 3 years old for buffet ($6). I know it's not much, but in all seriously, children that young don't even eat much. I went last year with my niece when she was two years old, and my sister in law gave her some food from her plate (from the buffet), and the restaurant just charged us. Again, my sister in law told the server that she barely ate, but they just ignored her and walked away. I am so shocked at the lack of service at this restaurant. They are rude, stubborn, disrespectful, and don't even know how to treat their customers. I wanted to rate this restaurant a 0, but I'm forced to give them 1 star.

The Korean dishes we ordered (bbq beef and chicken) were pretty good but not out of this world. We were unable to order everything we wanted because the restaurant had run out of several items. I feel restaurants should NEVER run out of anything. That's what taking inventory is for. We also tried to order sushi but the waitress came back and told us the sushi chef refused to make our order. No explanation other than, "He said no." WTF?! We ordered a simple roll of fresh salmon, avocado, scallions, and cream cheese. All of those items were on the menu in other rolls. We just wanted them in one roll. When I turned to look at the sushi bar, it was empty. The sushi chef was just standing there doing ABSOLUTELY FREAKIN NOTHING yet he didn't want to make our roll. We talked to the manager and he nodded his head but did nothing. When we walked out the owner asked us how everything was and we explained the sushi situation. She said, "Next time let someone know." I told her we told the waitress and the manager and no one did anything. She just nodded her head and said, "Oh, sorry." Dear sushi chef, If you don't want to make food for other people, then don't work in a restaurant.

my faux big bros brought me and my sister here. it's a really pretty spot, definitely "date-worthy" compared to some of the other kbbq (although very yummy) spots around. they also have fans above the grills so we didn't leave smelling like meat. my big bros ordered a little bit of everythng; soups, kbbq, and sushi! our table was completely covered! i'll honestly say i didn't like the bulgogi, but the galbi was pretty awesome. sushi was pretty. but overall, nothing about the food was that noteworth... all in all, come here if you're trying to introduce a person to kbbq... then when they're comfortable, bring them to one of the hole in the wall spots with the tastier meats!

I'm not quite comfortable reviewing Korean eateries because our range of selections is quite limited - bulgogi, bi bam bap, dumpling and noodle soups. Sorak Garden always offers very cordial service to Westerners. I find the ambiance a little open and bright. We've always been pleased with our food. The range of small appetizers is not as wide as some of the local competition., but the food is solid.

This review is for their Nang-Myun (cold noodle soup) ONLY. I think they have the best nang-myun anywhere. I've had plenty around the VA area and NY & NJ area and theirs is the best. Next time I'm in town, I'm definitely stopping by for some.

In terms of food, pretty good stuff, but when it comes down to it... It's just not anything special. They have a decent selection of dishes to choose from, but who cares if the menu is filled with things that are AT LEAST $13. I personally go there for their Dol Sot Bi Bim Bab w/ Galbi. Their hwe dup bab is pretty good too. People rave about their Neng Myun, but I've definitely had better. I'm very picky about my neng myun. The neng myun needs to at least have the perfect combination of well-cooked noodles, perfectly thin slices of sweet & sour pickled radish, perfectly thin slices of juicy & sweet Asian pears, and slightly frozen soup. Overall, simply not enough to make my 4 star list.

The service here was pretty good, but as a Korean I focus way more on the taste of the food themselves whenever I go out to eat Korean food. I had galbi and naengmyeon (cold noodles), and they were so and so. I probably have high expectations, since I always compare them to those I have eaten in Korea. However, I felt that the galbi was decent, and the naengmyeon was really bland. I will probably try the lunch buffet next time -- may be a better shot at this place based on other reviews.

Our friend who took us here has lived in South Korea, so she knows her stuff. She thinks this place is great. As for me, I liked the wide range of side dishes they brought out -- not only the usual cabbage kim chee but more than half a dozen other kinds of pickled and spicy delights. For an entree, I had "tofu and kimchee" (#77 on the menu). Even though it sounds like a very simple dish, it was full of really intense spices, and the portion was enormous. Vegetarians, take note -- even though the menu description doesn't mention meat in this dish, they'll include meat unless you explicitly ask them to make it vegetarian. Another tip for vegetarians: Even though it's not on the menu, they can make a vegetarian version of the BeBimBop if you ask them to. Our friend had a sort of fish stew that looked and smelled surprisingly great. My husband had a sashimi rice bowl, and said he liked it, but that the sashimi pieces were small for his taste. I also noticed they had a sushi bar, but I didn't try it.

The food here is good, but a little bit pricey... The atmosphere is nice, because you can get little private rooms on the side of the restaurant and they have a sushi bar (yes, yes, I know that's Japanese but a lot of Chinese/and Korean places have them). I've had their bulgolgi (good), kalbi (good), kimchi jigae (good). I really recommend their bento lunch boxes. A little sampling of everything is always nice. However, I mainly come here for the panchan... since they give you like like 10 side dishes each time.... Maybe that's why its pricey

My mom takes me to Sorak's lunch buffet quite often, so my review is based on their lunch buffet. I really like their all you can eat sushi buffet. There are lots of interesting sushi I've never had before. I am not a big fan of the other food. Their dduk bok ki is disgustingly salty, it's almost diabetes inducing! Anyway, the rest of the food is decent but nothing too amazing. I usually stick to the sushi. My parents and their friends aren't too keen on their dinner service, so I've never had dinner there. From what I hear, I'd rather go to Yechon for dinner. _________ Update: I had dinner at Sorak Garden last night and it was horrible! We only went because Yechon's lines were spilling outside and we didn't want to wait. Anyway, between Sorak and Heebeen, we decided to go to Sorak because it was closer. It was a HORRIBLE MISTAKE. Their side dishes were a sad bunch, both in quality and quantity. If they were going to serve so little, then I'd at least expect the side dishes to be spectacular! They weren't enticing at all. We ordered 2 orders of galbi and 2 bibimbaps (for 4 people). The two servings were really small, and it came 15-20 minutes before the bibimbap. So it was really awkward that two people were eating and the other two weren't. I hate sharing food, it's a pet peeve of mine. So naturally, when people don't get their food while seeing others eat, they dig into your food. They also promised that we were going to get rice with our galbi. We didn't see it until there was just a little bit of meat left. When we asked for our rice bowls (two times), the waitresses were really snippy and one kind of tossed the bowl at me. Thanks for the effort. I also asked for a water and lettuce refill two times. I finally got my water when the check came but never saw the lettuce.. So already we have: people eating my small portion of galbi, an unproportionate ratio of rice and galbi, crappy service, crappy side dishes and no water. Yikes. I didn't try the bibimbap because a) I don't like eating other people's food and b) the two people who ordered it said it wasn't as good as the ones they had before at other restaurants. Anyway, the worst bit was when it came to paying. We'd also ordered some junbokjook to go, and when we were tipping, we decided to leave out the porridge from the total. We also only decided to leave a 10% tip since the service and food both sucked. The lady who came to pick up the tip/check freaked out on us, demanding that we give at least a 15% tip. She was serious. Where does she think she is? France? Ugh I don't know why we left her more money for that kind of behavior. Anyway, I'll probably never come back, even though their newly lowered lunch sushi buffet sounds somewhat enticing. If we're going to spend over $100 for Korean food for four, I'd rather go to Heebeen. At least I don't have to wait for food and deal with crappy service.

My family went there on 6/26/11 for lunch. We only ordered two entrees and one sushi and just water and the price with tips and taxes came out to be almost $60.00. This place is way too pricey and we will never come back again. The food wasn't any special in any way. The worst part is that one of the water glass it came out for us had a lipstick mark on it and I don't wear lipstick that day. Now I am afraid of what the rests of silverwares are coming from...unwashed and unsanitized. For a fancy place and not washing their dishes is very disgusting.

I will admit that I am new to Korean BBQ having ventured to only one other such restaurant in Northern Virginia. Friends advised that Sorak was very good and we should give it a go. Well, let's just say Sorak was not up there on my limited list of places. The restaurant is nice with adequate room between tables. The overhead fans (without which the BBQ (which is really grilling) would get totally out of hand. Trouble here was the server not only decided to use the fire pit in the middle of the table but also a propane grill placed at the end of the table where I was sitting. So not only did I have the drone of the overhead fan but also the heat of a grill sitting no more than a foot from me. Not a good option. And the food was just OK at best. The meat was somewhat fatty and tough and, like the restaurant itself, lacked something of a personality.!! The small bowls of condiments left much to be desired as well. Sparse servings of mediocre fair at best. I am continuing to get my footing with Korean food and will plan on trying another restaurant especially now that i have something that I'd consider "poor" to compare to.!!

Great food and service. I'm from LA and didn't think that I was going to find a decent Korean restaurant here in VA but I did. We ordered fish (jogi), bi bim bup and the Korean pancake. It was all very delicious and the services was great.

I went to this place for a friend's bday dinner and it was pretty solid Korean BBQ. we had a large group but our waitress was helpful with order suggestions. I have to agree with everyone else that it is a little expensive and you can find places with similar dishes for a little cheaper but not enough to save you a million. it's a solid reliable place though.

This place has been hit-or-miss for me over the past couple years but my last visit the other day was very good. I had the Sorak "special" galbi(which probably is marinated with more stuff than their regular galbi) and it was excellent. plus, they have a $5 add-on option of either dwen-jang-jjigae or nengmyun(cold soup or spicy version). the whole restaurant was also packed at the time which was another indication that this place is doing well. very clean and attentive staff as well.

We went for the lunch buffet. For $9.99, it's an excellent value. The best item was the CRAB, fried in a sweet & sour sauce. It was amazing to see it in a buffet. We got there exactly at 11:30. the place filled up extremely quickly and soon there was a wait for table even though it's a large restaurant.

Attended a banquet at Sorak Garden. I felt like Tony Bourdain "gastronomitreking" through other lands on behalf of the Outdoor Network, expecting to sample local delicacies and unnameable cuisines. But Korean Banquets aren't exactly like eating the sit-down meal at the smokey charcoal pit table. They're better!! I watched to see what the expected protocol was for banquet lines. Lesson learned: it's an orderly free-for-all. When in Annandale act like an Annandalian? You just have to grab a plate and go. The food was fantastic, featuring a wide range of dishes: meat, noodle, fish and vegetable. At the end of the meal I tried Chapsaltteok (rice cake with bean paste). Awesome! If ever invited to a banquet here....GO!

Average food, small portions and the worst customer service I've ever had. Service comes with a lot of attitude and in a bad way. Our waitress didn't even bother to check on us once and when we asked for something she'd make an ugly face and walk away. I'm never coming back here!!

Outrageous customer service will not be back. Went here for a birthday party and the waitress gave us a hard time. She never came back for refills and had a lot of sass...... The food was pricey, small portions and very average. Save yourself the pain and go somewhere else.

I kind of love this place. I am a HUGE fan of hot-pot bi-bim-bop (which we call stone bowl back home), and actually tried it with Galbi last night. I was not disappointed with the texture or flavors, and love to scrape the rice and other bits as they keep cooking in the bowl. I am curious though, as I didn't try the regular bi-bim-bop in the hot pot, so does that come with egg on top so the bowl can cook it? My Galbi hot-pot didn't have it, so I don't know if that's something Sorak Garden doesn't do or the specific dish doesn't have. Anyway, all the side dishes were great. We were focused on bean sprouts and kim chee and got refills on those a few times with no problems, and part of the table got the meat combination barbecue, which was also super tasty. The one downside was that it was rather awkward trying to eat while you have the server standing over you cooking the meat on the grill, and I would've loved to move over, but didn't really have the room. It was nice that they cooked it for you, but it did make it hard to maneuver everything else on the table. Since moving to DC, I've missed eating Korean food a lot, so it was nice to actually go somewhere tasty and delicious that conjures up memories of eating with my friends back home!

Moderate. Kind of like the Toyota of Korean restaurants. Nothing flashy, solid, reliable Korean food. Definitely not the best I've ever had, but it gets the job done. A little on the pricier side, but only by $1-2.

i'm really not a big fan of md/va korean restaurants because i think they are all mad stingy with the side dishes, unlike flushing or ktown in ny. but anyway, i went here because it's my moms favorite restaurant and she wanted to eat her favorite food - korean food. i ordered the hwae dup bap, my dad ordered the la kalbi, and lastly, my mom ordered the nyeng myun. being the way that we are, we shared all our dishes so i got to try probably the staple dishes of most korean restaurants. to be honest though, it was just aiiiiiite. i wasn't like wow, this kalbi is particularly amazingly seasoned or i didn't think the nyeng myun juice was like mind bogglingly great tasting. and don't even get me started with the hwae dup bap because i've had soooo much better out in flushing at jejudo hwae jjip. anyways, to shorten a long rambly, ranty review, this place has good ol' korean food like any other korean restaurant. that's it.

Favorite! This is my favorite place to go for korean. With friends, or just me and my boyFRIEND. There's always really yummy food. I like their Han Mul Pajean (um yeah..sp!) and their brown rice and really great grilled food. Really flavorful duk man du guk which my boyfriend and I always share since the serving is so freaking large! Imagine the salads at Applebees. Like one salad for one person at Applebees is equal to one huge salad that you would make at your house to take to a potluck. HUGE! HUGE portions! Anyway, I like all the sides here which is very important. Sometimes, I go to a korean restaurant and I eat like NONE of the banchan). The spider rolls here are very good. I love soft shell crab. My mom can't eat 'any asian food' because it 'ALL has msg'. So unfortunately, she will never be able to experience the warmth and delicious flavors here. BUT, I WILL take ALL of my friends at some point in their life, to eat here.

I arrived for dinner after trying to go to another place but the other place was to crowded. I was craving some Kalbi and remembered this place from a previous trip. As a westerner, Kalbi has always been one of my favorites and you can't really make bad Kalbi unless you try lol. After arriving, it was filled but not packed which made sitting good. After sitting down and ordering the food, I was pleasantly surprised with getting at least 5 side dishes. Sometimes I go to Korean restaurants and when they see that I'm not Korean they will scimp on the amount of side dishes. A good place will usually have at least five. One of the side dishes was spicy Monky fish which I like. Service was good, not extra ordinary, but on par. I finished a few of the side dishes before the Kalbi arrived and unfortunately no refills were given, although I should have asked but the server was a bit to busy to notice. Kalbi was cooked at the table and very good although the portions a bit on the smaller than I'm used to size. I did have to ask for garlic, which I never have to when i go with my Korean friends. . The total price for two people was around 40 dollars which is good for two people on a night where you don't feel like cooking. I agree with the other reviews, the places was nice, food good, just nothing making Sorak Garden one of those places that make you say, I have to come again soon, but one you would like to if your in the mood and not wanting to drive to far out of the way.
