The Hot Spot

If I'm looking for something a little more casual, a little cheaper, or just want to enjoy my meal outside, The Hot Spot is an amazing alternative to Mom's Cafe right up the street. This place is a cute little drive thru on the side of the road with a tiny parking lot and cute little benches under some nice trees. My go to meal is their chicken strip basket and after my latest trip there, a substitute of sweet potato fries. The chicken strips are hot and juicy and the sweet potato fries are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. My mom enjoys their mini tacos and I look forward to trying other items on their menu, if I can ever get passed my chicken strips. Service here is also pretty quick and everyone is very nice.
The best sherbet ice cream. Had homemade LIME sherbet. Wow. Great old fashioned walk up place. Frequented by towns' people which is always a good sign. Nice little town when traveling between CA and CO.
Food = 4 (it is what it is... pretty good!) Price = 4 Experience = 4 (super cute place)

This place is located just off the I-70 in Utah. There is a Phillips 66 gas station out front and a "souvenir type" shop next to the Carl's Jr. Food is fresh and good. Enjoy! **The YELP page is incorrect for this restaurant - it shows "Closed today" (Sunday) when in fact it is OPEN.

Oh Mom's... You've been here forever. (Literally. Like a hundred years. Can't remember exactly but the story is on their menu.) Food is decent... I think we ordered the wrong thing the last time we ate here. We got broiled chicken. I guess we were figuring small town food, how could fried chicken be bad? It was pretty bad. Again, I just think we ordered the wrong thing. The chicken was bland, like they didn't season it. I wasn't really a fan of their mashed potatoes either... but they had white gravy on them that had big bits of sausage in it. Pretty cool! Homemade! Their scones however... OMIGOSH! SO GOOD. However, it's not what most people would think a scone would be. My mom called it indian fry bread. She was right... Slightly sweet and flat like fry bread. Yum. I think this type of "scone" is typical to the area. They had a salad bar that was interesting. Typical iceberg lettuce and that was about it for fresh veggies. They had canned peas out and beets. I'm not a pea fan and also not so much a fan of canned veggies. However, I'm told that's pretty typical, too. They had good marinated mushrooms though! Also, they had a "salad" that was more like a dessert than a salad. My family eats these kind of "salads." They're made with jello! Normally I'm not that big a fan of these type of "salads." It was made with pistachio pudding, pistachios, pineapple, and whipped cream. I actually liked it! I think it was at that point I told my mother (who I was on a road trip with) that we'd been in Utah too long. HA! It's a good place to stop and my family's eaten here since forever. Try it, you'll probably like it! It's not the healthiest food to eat, but it's pretty darn good.
Okay, I agree with the less than stellar reviews this place got. I went here last summer (yes, it was that bad that I remember) and was very disappointed with both the food and the service. 1. The older woman that served us (Mom?) acted like she didn't want to serve us at all, like it was a big inconvenience to her. She forgot to bring my drink and tried her best to ignore us. Let it be known, my husband, brother-in-law and I look like average joes, so its not like we are bizarre-looking strangers with tattoos and piercings galore. 2. There were children working in the kitchen. When "Mom" went back there it seemed that she was busy managing a daycare. 3. The food was not what I would expect from a local cafe/diner. I ordered the hot roast beef sandwich. I wasn't expecting gourmet food, but I've eaten at truck stops that served delicious, down home comfort food. The bread was heated in a toaster, the meat looked like it came from a can. Kinda icky. I really like minimizing the amount of fast food I eat when driving across country, but in this case, fast food would have been tasted better and wouldn't feel like a rip-off. If you decide to eat here, make sure you catch "Mom" on a good day. Also, don't believe everything you read in a guidebook.
The food was So So. Some of the family thought it the best others were okay. The fried bread was good. Not heavy like some I have had. But the waitress we had was way beyond the best. We had gone down to Gunnison for family reunion. Had to be one of the worst weekends.. Cold, Cold, Cold and the wind at 55. We left Gunnison and called Mom's on our way to Salina. We started as 9 and quickly became 16. Our waitress had the back area and a couple of tables at the front. She was quick, nice and did not get perplexed when some of the family was none to pleased about their drinks. They even brought out plates so we could enjoy the birthday cake for my brother we brought.. I would have to say the food has gone a little down in the years I have been going there. But that waitress.. TOPS!!!!!!

Where to begin... How about we start with the fact that the margaritas are only non-alcoholic. We are at a Mexican restaurant, correct? It's a pretty bland salsa. The staff is rude. If you don't let them take your order the moment you sit down, they won't come back for 20 mins... At least. The soft taco, mediocre. As is the fajita salad and taco salad... We ate here because we got caught in a snow storm and needed to stay at the super 8.... Unless it's life or death, keep on driving!
We were passing through going back to Tucson and found this place. The service was excellent and so was the food. I had the chimi and wife had the taco salad. Both were equal or better than we get in Tucson.
Where to start. The rude hostess who simply tossed the stack of menus on the table and walked away before we even got to the table? The lady who brought the chips and dumped half them out of the basket when she slammed them on the table. The waitress who made no bones about how much she hates her job and having to take your order. The hour and 20 minutes it took to get our food. The Carne asada was the toughest piece of grissle I have ever experienced. The shrimp diablo my lady had was just nasty. Luke warm, over cooked, ugh. Please just close the doors already.

We stopped in here on our way from Utah. We wanted to try something other than the Denny's on the other side of town. We had the Ham Fried Rice, Teriyaki Chicken and Shrimp Foo Young. Our waitress was nice and the food came out fast.

They have all the fun Lay's chip flavors! The lady that took our order was very nice, friendly, and on top of our orders.
Only because I had to... We stopped here out of the lack of options to eat while on the road in Utah. This has been by far my most interesting stop at a subway. You can tell that everybody around here is related but this girls's parents had to have been siblings or at least first cousins. Holy shit she took 10 minutes to make our sandwiches. She would space out for about 30 seconds probably thinking about the Teletubbies or something. The place was grimy and old. We ate really fast and got the hell outta there. Maybe Colorado will be better. Oh the food, I forgot.... just like any other sandwich you've had at Subway, so you'll find what you're looking for.
Thank God for chain restaurants. You can always depend on their consistency in the middle of no where.....whether you wanted it or not. Same breads, same meats, same everything.
