Over priced. It's Sushi for people that just like to say they eat Sushi. The sushi is good. Atmosphere is OK.

nearly 2 hours in and out, not that we were in a hurry but service was terribly slow on a not too busy weeknight. Food overpriced, crab wontons were pitiful, you get about 1/2 as many as PF Changs, and they're half the size. And not as good. Sushi is on par with other places i've had, not amazing, not bad.

With ease the best sushi I've had in Provo. Everything tastes awesome, and I really like the style of the restaurant - really sweet ambiance. Really not expensive at all, so it great taking dates there.

Delicious sushi! Pretty good service. They could stand to update their decor. It's been the same ever since we started going there years ago, but our whole family loves the sushi.

attractive staff, inexpensive lunch bento box. Nothing out of this world but not bad. Can be slow but a nice vibe. Really not bad for Provo.

I came here for a business meeting. It was delicious and I reccomend it! It seems like a more elegant type restaurant. Great sushi!

Had the beef teriyaki bento box and it was ok. The teriyaki sauce was too strong so I couldnt taste the beef. The salad was good and the california rolls weren't enjoyable.

Horrible Service but Amazing food. Every time I have eaten here it is the exact same thing, it takes someone forever to greet us, we have to wait forever for the food, overall REALLY BAD service but the food is some of the best around. Its sad that the service is so bad because we loved there food but eventually stopped going because we have had over 6 pretty bad experiences. One time I received my roll a little less than 30 min after my sisters had finished theirs ( the server never apologized but simply mentioned my roll would be only a little bit longer). One time we waited over an hour for our rolls while we saw tables come and go around us that sat after we did and we watched our server chatting to another server while our rolls sat on the food table for over 20 mins. She brought them to us after she was done talking and they were cold( tempura rolls that should have been warm) We have even complained and sent in a formal email and the only response we got was "Thank you for your feedback we will let that server know"......

This is my husbands favorite place for Sushi! It's great, but a little on the speedy side. It is really hard to get a table without a reservation, so plan ahead!

Roommates wanted to go out to sushi. It's half off day at this place (They said Happy Sumo but I heard Shoga, which was the only reason I tagged along). Well it's my first time going here and the second I saw the menu I knew it wasn't gonna end well. Sushi roll with chicken in it? Bahahaha that's a terrifying sight. Ordered the sumo sampler, the baja and the frida roll. Sampler: The prawns were not firm but rather soggy and flavorless. Wontons and pot stickers were okay. The peppers were the only things I like. Proportion was small. Granted it was half off, it wasn't a horrible deal. The rolls: Sushi rice was laughable. Ginger was the cheap pink kind. Wasabi was the weak powdered stuff that you mix with water. The tuna in the baja was brown and old. The flavors of the baja did not go together very well but rather funky tasting, not in a good way. The frida roll suffered the same faith and were made with old ingredients. First time, and last time.

First, I used to love this restaurant but over a little while now I've noticed that the sushi has gotten to be mediocre, which for the price is pretty disappointing. If you're a VIP member and you go on a two-for-one night that's not too terrible however. Second, the service. I don't know what is going on behind the scenes here but it needs to be fixed. Most inattentive waitresses I've ever had. And I don't see them busy with other people. They just kind of... disappear. I hope this place gets back to how it used to be: a customer-friendly establishment with excellent quality food.

The only thing fishy about this restaurant, is the quality of the sushi. It was a great place to satisfy my craving. The atmosphere was good, I especially liked the black curtains that surrounded my booth, which offered a secluded feeling--my own sanctuary. The waitress got to us in a timely manner, and would check on us periodically throughout our meal. The best part of the meal was the complimentary to-go cups our waitress offered AND the delightful mints that washed away the fishy breath. A great evening was had by all! TIPS & TRICKS: * Make sure to get a reservation, everyone knows about this gem of a restaurant. * Take advantage of the location, especially in the winter, there are lights surrounding the square which make for a nice walk. There was also a band performing right outside too, which made my wait more pleasant. * Try the Mango Roll, it was freaking delightful.

If you want good sushi, this is not the place to go. They charge high prices for mediocre sushi. I got the Vegas roll and Jezzebelle. The Jezebel was wrapped poorly and the flavors didn't work. The ratios inside the roll were weird. I didn't hate the roll, but I've had better. I also got the Tempura vegetables. Now traditionally Japanese food is small enough that it is bite size so you can pick it up with chopsticks. With the vegetables, while the playing was pretty, the portions were as big as my hands with full onion rings and sweet post the length of a potato. Speaking of, the sweet potatoes were raw. The service was great, but it did take an hour to get our food out. That was on top of waiting an hour for our table because they don't take reservations on Fridays and Saturdays.

The wait for a couple simple rolls was 40 minutes on a slow day. The rolls were not all that good. Probably had better sushi at the grocery store deli.

    (1)
  • Ryan G.

Waited 47 min for two rolls and the roll looked nothing like the picture, it was missing ingredients. One 15 dollar roll could feed a small child.

Top notch service, spot on sushi rolls, food is plated perfectly, classy environment. Recommendations: Gyoza and miso soup for appetizer. Ask for your miso soup to be made Jaime style. Favorite rolls: rockstar, frida, cucumber, sweetheart. I eat more simple rolls so these are more clean. Great teas to compliment your food and close it down with the Mount Fuji dessert. Thanks sumo for great food!! Restaurant could use a bit of an update / fresh colors and decorations. But this is one of my top 3 places to eat in Utah county.

My family has raved about his place for years now and I'm never one to jump in the car and go eat sushi....BUT last night I did and was pleasantly surprised! It was a busy Saturday night, so a carload left early to get on the wait list. They were told it would be a 90 min wait, which turned out to be only 30 min! The restaurant seemed small for how busy they were. They shoot out a text when your table is ready, so we walked around and enjoyed the fun atmosphere at this fun shopping area. I loved the variety of non-sushi items on the menu. Those who loved sushi, devoured it and I nibbled on a few pieces as well. My favorite was the mango roll. It was like a dessert. I mostly ate the sampler plate with fried shrimp and crab cakes. We had a great server and enjoyed free re-fills. At the end of the night, she asked us if we would like our last re-fill in a to-go cup! What an extra delight. Great prices for the VIP guests and loved the mints. Now I can go with my family and we can all enjoy a meal together! Thanks Happy Sumo for making us all HAPPY :)

Hands down, this is the best sushi in UTAH COUNTY. Granted, your options for real sushi are very limited...this is your place. Always excellent and quick service. I love this place because of the variety. The sushi is amazing, but it caters to those who (for some unknown reason) don't like sushi. I recommend the Rockstar and Diva rolls! Man, I am getting hungry writing this review! Go try it, you will love it!

  • Alix W.

Pretty decent sushi but I'm no expert. I've never felt welcomed in the restaurant. I've ordered "take out" a few times which has always been a hassle. They tell you that someone at the store will contact you within 15 minuets or LESS. However, every time I've ordered online I've waited for 30+ minutes with no call. When I end up calling them, the girl just then finds my order and it will be another 30+ minutes before it's ready. But still, I find myself craving their Vegas and Philly roles and always come back for more. Their free VIP program is pretty cool as you get specials like 2 for 1 rolls and other special "events".

  • James H.

Average sushi at an above average price. Seared Tuna salad was a nice change of pace though. Nothing to really complain about but with so many more sushi options available now, this location didn't do anything to stand out.

  • Amber P.

THE best service! I've been to many locations at happy sumo, and this location is by far the best ! Couldn't have asked for faster food, friendly staff, the manager Lacey was so kind, and she took great care of everyone. We look forward to coming again.

  • Taylor S.

I loved the sushi rolls I've had there. I thought the service was alright, but I went there during the afternoon when it was almost deserted. I would also recommend the Vegas roll, particularly on days when you can get them two for one. Also, the crab Rangoon's are amazing. Maybe I just don't know sushi like the rest of the reviewers, but I think this is the best place for sushi in Provo, even if it has gone down hill.

    (4)
  • Frank P.

Food was average. . The rolls were a bit bland. The server forgot to bring the soy sauce dipping bowl. ..

    (1)
  • Dawn D.

I tried! I really really tried. I thought is it because it's lunch or they're understaffed? Idk, what I do know is that each time I've been the service has been terrible. No one to greet me, no one to serve me besides the sushi chef, hell- I had to ask for a water. I used to come pretty often and took a break to see if things would change... Their food isn't even that good, they're just the closest. First time back in and things haven't changed. Same shitty service and rude employees/managers. Oh, don't let them trick you, they have lunch specials but won't tell you. Last time in for sure! Everyone is treated pretty bad, but if you're a minority, you're treated like SHIT!

I love this place! Here are some of my favorite items on the menu: Starters: Crab Wontons Edamame Miso Soup Thai Lettuce Wraps Salads: Seaweed Salad Rolls: Baja Firecracker Utah Sweetheart Rainbow Crunch Vegas Sunset & Rock N Roll Dessert: Mochi Balls Yummy Place and Fun/Nice Atmosphere. Great date place.

  • Annette S.

Nice location and the booth we got was nice and private. The service was a little lack luster and the food wasn't as good as I would of liked it to be. But then again I've been living in the Bay Area and the sushi is phenomenal there. Food did come out fast but nothing was memorable or special enough to recommend. I don't expect to find great sushi in Utah but I wanted to try it anyways. One more thing, the prices are way to high for the quality of what you are getting and for that reason I will probably pass on returning.

    (3)
  • Brad V.

In my opinion this place is too expensive for what you really get. Come on, I mean how much do think raw fish on rice really cost? Service is slow and they charge you for refills on your soda. I say find a cheaper place. The sumo may be happy because so many people will spend so much money there, but many are not so happy when they get the bill and they wait too long for service. Skip this place is my suggestion. I have been once and do not desire to return.

  • Nathan B.

The food is unreal but I've never had worse customer service at a restaurant. Repeatedly I have been turned away by the manager at 830 pm when the restaurant is empty. Seems to me they have a poor work ethic and want to go home early or something. The managers are rude and unprofessional. I have worked in the restaurant business for 10+ years but I've never seen such rude behavior. If you can find away to get a seat, the food is excellent.

Our host was fantastic and very welcoming. The server, Danielle, was awesome. She made a great recommendation. The experience was great all around. I would highly recommend Happy Sumo.

Their monthly VIP email deal is what keeps me coming to Happy Sumo. They have specials on certain rolls and half price on various nights throughout the month. Would I rather go to Park City or Salt Lake to get sushi? Yes. But for Utah Valley, its the best option for really flavorful rolls.

  • Trevor C.

My wife and I love the sushi at Happy Sumo! Our favorite rolls are the Vegas, Firecracker, Mango Mamma, Frida, Panko Popper, and Surf & Turf. We eat here 1-2 times a month. Great food and vibes!

My family really enjoyed our dining experience here! The sushi was deliciously fresh with exciting presentations; the service was outstanding and our server was very friendly and helpful which truly made our dining experience fun and special! I also consider the ambience to be artful and I appreciate that. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience here. I HIGHLY recommend The Happy Sumo! :)

This place has some of the freshest sushi I've had in Utah. I was surprised with how fresh it actually was. The service could have been a little better the playboy and dragon rolls were fantastic!

    (4)
  • Janet B.

Food was good. Turtle shell appetizer was different, but tasty, liked the crunch. Hamachi sashimi was very good, liked the presentation with thinly sliced avocado, lemon, and cucumber, but very expensive. Unagi nigiri was tender and moist. I don't understand why they cheapen the atmosphere by putting kraft paper over the tablecloths... Hot water machine was broken, so couldn't get hot green tea. Guess they couldn't be bothered with heating water the old fashioned way. Waitress was attentive and pleasant. Took a while to get food, which was confusing since I was the only person in the place for 10 minutes.

  • Sheila V.

my absolute favorite place ! I do not know how the sushi is I only order the Sumo Sampler - it come's with Tempura Tiger Prawns , Crab Wontons ,Pot Stickers and Shishito Peppers with ponzo sauce and Sumo dipping sauce and sometimes the grilled chicken satay . most of the time when I am by my self I just get the Peppers because they are that good!! come and enjoy!

  • Dallin P.

Great food and great service! They have a great system that sends you a text message letting you know the table is ready. Made it convenient to walk around and enjoy other shops in the area rather than having to just wait around. Sushi was superb, and the noodle dish that we got to accompany it was great.

    (5)
  • Eric R.

Good sushi, but for some reason the serving staff think they don't have to provide any reasonable level of service. It's like they think they're doing you a favor by allowing you to eat at their restaurant. Again, good sushi, but not the service I'd like to see.

    (2)
  • Adam M.

Food very sub par and the service was even worse. If ur in a hurry do not eat here trust me!

    (1)
  • Nancy R.

This place has a lot of potential. Service is always a hit and miss, usually the issue is that every time I go after their dinner rush they always want to get you out of there as soon as possible. I walked in at 730 and they were pretty slow to take my order, so me and my husband ordered 2 sushi rolls and an appetizer, we finally got our food and the girl told us that if we wanted more sushi rolls to put the order in before their sushi bar closed. I mean they were a good 40 min before their closing time at 9 pm. This is not the first time this happens, I have tried to put an order before like 25 min before they closed and I got turned away, they usually give you a dumb excuse like they ran out of rice or something. Maybe their sign should say open till 9 but order food way before so we can leave at 9 pm.

I have gone to Happy Sumo for years, and loved the food. I'm a VIP member, and my husband and I go about every week to enjoy their food. Recently I have had terrible experiences with Happy Sumo. First, I have had waitresses who have forgotten to give me any form of chopsticks or water. I also have now had them cancel TWO RESERVATIONS. I thought I would be forgiving and give them another chance after they "couldn't find" my reservation I made for a Thursday. But then I made another reservation for four people, and when I called to try to add one more person, they told me they couldn't find it at all, and the manager named Lacey said there was nothing she can do. They lost my reservation which I made FOUR DAYS in advance. They then said there was nothing they could do, and the manager said she "did not believe" her waitresses would not make a reservation without consulting the manager, even though they did, and my husband can confirm it. The food might be alright, but there are other sushi places with food just as good and not the absolutely terrible customer service you will receive at Happy Sumo. Happy Sumo used to be a good place to go, but it has been going downhill for some time. Wouldn't recommend.

  • Rebecca Larson G.

Honestly... From the minute we walked in, to the second we left, all around the worst service and sushi we have ever had. I would love to let the owner know, if reading this. We walked I. About 40 minutes before closing. The minute we were greeted with ," we are only serving for another 30 minutes, we should have left. The sushi rolls were so small and tasteless. They forgot our salads and when I asked to just take them off , she brought them out at the end. I felt like they were more worried getting out of there and off to party with their friends than they were to serve us out dinner. By the way, the place was way too pricey. Not worth it at all!

This sushi is not the best in utah county. Come here for provo social scene and half off sushi. If good sushi with a zen vibe is your cup of tea look elsewhere

    (4)
  • Domo O.

Their sushi chefs are amazing! and also handsome. I really think this is some of the most fresh sushi down here in provo. They have great hostesses that know the menu and have great personalities.

    (5)
  • Lorin S.

This is by far my favorite sushi restaurant in Utah county. The food is really good. My favorite roll is the rockstar. The staff is super friendly. I would definitely recommend!

    (4)
  • Jason S.

Food is okay, but the service is horrible. Last night I had to wait ten minutes before a hostess even entered the waiting area. Five minutes later when she was going to seat me, she told me that she could seat me now, but that it was going to be at least a half hour wait for any sushi. The restaurant was practically empty. On numerous occasions I have had to wait 30-60 minutes to be seated or to get my food once seated. Completely unacceptable.

    (1)
  • Adam M.

The host was so friendly. We walked in 10 minutes before closing time and they were so nice about a party of 4 coming in. Then Brooke our server was so dang good. She was so fun. She was so so nice and the sushi was so good. If you go. Ask for Brooke, she really knows the perfect rolls to order.

    (5)
  • Dan J.

I LOVE their sushi. They have a really versatile selection of rolls and I haven't had a bad roll yet. I also appreciate that they have a decent non-sushi and non-fish menu because my significant other abhors seafood :) Sometimes the service is EXTREMELY slow even if they are not busy. I mean how long does it take a waiter to come to my table when there are only three customers. I do wish that coupons worked on takeout. It doesn't really make sense that they don't. I come in, buy food, and don't take up a table. Isn't that what you want from a discount customer?

    (4)
  • Rod S.

At one time Happy Sumo made me happy. It was pretty darn good. Now it does not make me happy. It has been on a downhill slide for too long. This last visit was slow ... slow ... slow. There wasn't many people around. There didn't appear to be a reason to be so slow. The fish was fine, but not all that fresh. It hadn't started tasting fishy, but the texture said old. There is a VIP club that sends out a list of half price specials each month. That may make things worth it for you.

    (2)
  • Sam N.

I'm a Seattleite so I'm stingy about sushi. And in my opinion, it is dang good for Utah! Their VIP program is awesome, almost everyday they have good specials that are half off. I probably wouldnt pay full price but half off is an awesome deal

    (4)
  • Edward D.

Let's face it...if you really want fresh sushi, are you going to go some place in Utah? If you are, it had better be close to the airport in SLC. Vegas, San Fran, San Jose, Seattle, etc. Those are where your going to get stellar sushi. That being said, this place isn't bad when you can't get it elsewhere. Their prices are a but high for the quality of the sashimi, but what do you do when your landlocked. Personally , I'd rather wait til my next trip to Vegas or LA.

    (3)
  • Kellen P.

Let me preface this review by saying Happy Sumo used to be one of my favorite restaurants... until tonight. This was my first time at the Orem location and I was a little worried because I had read some recent reviews about this location not being very good. Despite the reviews I went and had some of the worst sushi I've ever tasted. I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to your basic roll. We ordered the Mango Momma, Vegas and Bacon Rolls. When they first brought the rolls I noticed right away that they looked different from the rolls I had ordered at the Salt Lake location. The rolls were smaller and they tasted old, bland and lacked the typical fresh textures and flavors. Other reviewers aren't kidding when they say quality has dipped big time. The bacon roll was one of the worst things I've tasted and it was truly a disappointing night. The service was also horrible. The waitress hardly paid attention to us and even appeared to avoid our table as it was evident my wife and I were both having a hard time choking down our food. We were nice to her and didn't complain at all but she could tell we didn't like it. She rushed us out of there as quick as possible. I don't know if its just this location or all the Happy Sumo's but this food is not nearly as good as it used to be. I give this 1 star because it used to be such a great place to eat and it's taken a complete nose dive on the food quality, taste, and service. Don't waste your time or money. Your local Smiths or Harmons probably has better sushi than this place.

    (1)
  • Natasha N.

If you want good sushi this is the place to go. I suggest signing up for the VIP membership. You get all sorts of deals. They offer dinner want ones each night of the week and if you plan on eating here often it's the way to go. Nice ambiance. It's a little pricey but it's pretty good sushi.

    (4)
  • Marcus W.

I've had very expensive sushi, I've had all-you-can-eat-make-you-sick sushi, I've had store-bought sushi, I've had pretty much all types and prices of sushi without actually going to Japan (but I'm hoping to this year!) Happy Sumo for me is about a 7 out of 10 for Utah sushi bars. The rolls are all pretty good, but they still don't have that out-of-this-world taste that other sushi bars seem to create. This past time we visited we had the Surf & Turf Roll (the steak was burned), Samurai Roll (one of my favorites), and Mango Mamma Roll (very good if you like fruit). The price reflects the better quality so expect to pay around $10-15 per roll. The atmosphere is nicer than most since it's an actual restaurant and NOT a throw-up-some-decorations in a strip mall and call it good restaurant. The waiters/waitresses are generally all good-looking college-aged kids and they run around quietly doing their jobs so no complaint on the service. I've never had much more than a 15-20 minute wait no matter what time of day or night and it's much more conducive to business meetings if you're looking to impress and still get decent food.

Once upon a time this place was wonderful, fresh, and inventive. Truly a place to bring friends and coworkers for an outstanding food and service experience... so what happened? My cosmopolitan roll, seaweed and squid salad looked like they came from an all you can eat buffet. The help is okay. I went back on three separate occasions to be sure. Unfortunately, this restaurant is done. Hope it gets better but I won't be back for a while to find out.

Good sushi and the price is reasonable if you are signed up for the VIP card. Downside: the card never gives discounts on the signature rolls. MUST TRY the chocolate cake. It's like no other.

After years of experiencing great service, I am saddened to have to write a poor review. I have been going here several times a month for 5+ years and have never experienced the poor customer service provided by manager Ammon this weekend. This is a "go to" place for anyone and don't misunderstand me, the food is exceptional. Without going into detail we did not feel valued as customers by Ammon which should be the primary objective of a manager towards his customers.

I love this place. Rockstar roll is my favorite. Vegas roll is amazing too. We tried the crab wontons for the first time today and they were delicious. The service is fast and our waitress was fabulous. Love the atmosphere, prices and overall experience.

My favorite sushi place in Utah county is Shoga in Orem, and I found The Happy Sumo to be very comparable. For about the same price, I get about the same flavor. There are some rolls that really put Shoga over the top for me, but I was really pleased with the diversity of the Happy Sumo menu, the helpful staff, and the quality of the rolls. I would definitely go back to Happy Sumo!

I am what some would call a foodie. I love all things food and consider three points when enjoying a meal 1) food quality 2) service and 3) atmosphere. Happy Sumo Provo exceeded my expectations in all 3 categories!!! We ordered rolls, appetizers as well as an entrée to share. Our waitress was nice, prompt and so helpful in answering our questions as well as giving great suggestions-we LOVED the turtle shells!! We will most definitely be going back soon.

  • Jordan D.

Happy sumo used to be very good. Recently they've started to cater to Utah's cheap crowd with their constant VIP nights and the quality has suffered because of it. Rolls are much smaller than they used to be and the quality of ingredients is poor.

Always a safe bet for sushi, but a tad expensive. The crab cakes appetizer is incredible. Get that and a couple of rolls, and you'll leave happy. I enjoy the Vegas roll the most.

OVER CHARGED ME $100! Took some friends here about 3 weeks ago for some appetizers and drinks. The service was fair but due to a "technical glitch" they charged my debit card twice. After 3 weeks, 6 emails, and 4 phone calls, the money is STILL not back in my account. They tried to rectify the situation with a $25 "come back and see us again certificate." Im hardly tempted to go back and lose more money -given the fact I was robbed of almost $100! And I'm sorry I tipped 25% for what turned out to be lousy service overall.

I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS LOCATION AGAIN. This place should not even get one star. I did not even get to try the food because I was so rudely DESCRIMINATED against from the moment I walked in with my 7 latina cousins. We had made a reservation which we changed twice before 1pm to add more people (keep in mind the reservation wasnt until 8:30 so that was plenty of time to make any changes). We were 30 mins early to our reservation and decided to sit inside because it was so cold outside and we were treated like TRASH from that moment on. The manager, Tenille, kept telling us very rudely that our reservation wasnt until 8:30 like 5 times, as if wanting us to get out. I asked if it was against reservation rules to sit inside while we wait since we felt like we were getting thrown out of the restaurant. She told us that there were other peple waiting for their own reservations and proceeded to be SO RUDE. When I pointed out to her she was being rude (and not even in a mean tone, just an matter of factly kind of way) she told me that I WAS RUDE for changing a reservation. When my cousin tried to get her to calm down and asked her talk lower so we were not involving the whole restaurant in what was happening she told us that she did not want our business and that we could even contact the owner if we had complaints because basically she did not care. I did not know that changing a reservation from 4 people to 8 people was bad for business but maybe I was wrong. I wish more people would have seen the way we were being treated because we were in no way trying to start anything. We had just gotten out of Women's Conference and were excited about a fun place to eat Sushi at. DO NOT GO HERE and support descrimination. I have never in my life been so embarrased. I have already spoken to the general manager and plan to take action until she no longer works there.

The Sushi here is excellent and the prices are reasonable, especially if you go on VIP night. The management, particularly a gentleman named Eric, greeted us personally and helped us get the best deal with the VIP rolls. Food was served promptly, even on a busy night, and the servers were very kind. Cons: We sat at a table for two right next to another couple, and we were so close I could hear every word of their conversation. Also, the lettuce for the lettuce wraps was served dripping wet with a few browning parts, and wasn't at all in a convenient shape for filling with delicious stuff.

I've frequented Happy Sumo for the past 3 years now. It's a very, very hit or miss experience. On a good night: The price matches the quality of the food. It's obviously not the best sushi you're going to eat (if you have had a wide range of sushi) but it's 10-15 dollars a roll. And if you sign up for the VIP email list, you get half off. So we're talking about 5-7 dollars a roll. If I don't feel like spending big, this is totally worth it for me. On a bad night: You'll wait 5-10 mins between seeing your waitress, the food will come out after 45+ mins of waiting, the raw fish on your sushi will be way too warm (not sitting on enough ice or something), and your waitress will mess up your order/ticket several times. Unfortunately, the bad nights far outnumber the good...I have trouble returning to Sumo because it's just happened far, far too many times. Try Shoga in Orem instead.

Great sushi place. Become a VIP member on their website and you will get a great discount. Sweetheart roll is one of my favorites

Love this place. Go multiple times each month. Love their V.I.P. program. Great atmosphere, even if it's just sitting at the bar watching a game. Not the absolute best sushi in the world -- but for the price and in a land-locked state, it's hard to beat.

I was all ready to give this a 4+ rating when I read all the other reviews and realized how right they were. The wait staff kind of is lousy. I love the food here, some of my favorite sushi, but it takes way too long and I'd trade some good looks for some better service.

I have never been very impressed with this place since the first time I came. They have decent food but way overpriced. I have had just as good of sushi at the half off places. I do like the atmosphere and the overall look of the restaurant. And they do have some pretty good lunch specials. But even still for the money I would choose somewhere else for sure. The staff is always nice and friendly. I am sure I will come back sometime.

Service isn't always the best, can be indifferent and even very slow, but the sushi is delicious and creative. Not very authentic maybe, but fantastic on combination/flavors.

Me and my wife just moved to Utah from California where delicious high quality sushi places are prevalent! We decided to go here for our anniversary lunch. It was a nice looking place and the decor was fine. But the food made us both very sick! My poor wife was throwing up the rest of our anniversary. We didnt even order sushi! we ordered a noodle dish and some fried items and we got bad food poisoning. It was most definitely from Happy Sumo since we hadnt eaten anything at all that day. The food varied widely in temperature, some items were cold and old tasting. I think there was likely cross contamination with the fish or somthing. We should of known better when we walked in and realized the men preparing the sushi were all young college looking white guys! haha I dont think ive ever seen a non asian preparing sushi at any sushi place ive ever been in California. Thanks Happy Sumo for ruining our anniversary while taking $30 bucks out of my wallet as well!

For Provo, Utah, this sushi was fantastic. We had a few of their signature specials, as well as a few nigiri. The signature rolls were creative and delicious, but what really stole the show was the freshness of the fish. Salmon, yellow tail, maguro... all very good.

I absolutely LOVE the food here. But be careful when you order takeout. They almost always screw it up! And the servers aren't the most attentive.

I love the term "novelty sushi", that fits this place to a T. Don't get me wrong, they have some tasty stuff, and some more traditional rolls which are quite tasty. But every time I see a deep-fried sushi roll stuffed with cream cheese, I just have to laugh, and remember that I am in America, after all. All in all, it's a lively, fun restaurant with some inventive treats. The prices are steep, but hey, do you see an ocean anywhere around here? I didn't think so.

We went the day after Christmas for lunch and it was pretty empty. We got a booth in the back, that had a curtain we could drop for privacy, which I imagine would be nice for a date. It is definitely lively and there is an eclectic mix of loud music playing, so it made the cozy booth rather less cozy. But none of that has to do with the food. I will say the one roll with lemon and salmon was nice, light and buttery and I absolutely recommend it. 3 stars as the rolls range from 8.95 to 12.95 and other than the salmon roll I didn't like the meal. The tempura was oily and didn't have much taste to it. From what I saw of the meals ordered (General Chang's Chicken and the Hawaiian Chicken) they were also oily. I would recommend the Hawaiian Chicken over General Chang's. The edemame are great, but then again how can you go wrong with edemame? The sushi was good for Utah, but it as everyone has pointed out is "novelty sushi." Overall the taste of the fish is covered by various sauces (which I was glad for as the tuna was decent this far from the ocean, and the shrimp was absolutely awful).

So last 2 times I've had to wait over 45 minutes to be seated on a weeknight when there was not many people in front of us. They seemed to be understaffed always! and the attitudes of some girls/waitress there make me want to leave them nothing for a tip. (i did one of the times) First time in my 15 years of paying for dinner. had to track down the waitress the last time to order my food and make sure we had napkins and chop sticks to eat our sushi with after it arrived. Sadly the sushi is very good, and last 2 times it was 50% which makes the terrible service somewhat worth it. Id give them at 1.5 if they've had it. Go to Shoga in orem for a great time/sushi

I LOVE this place. The Sushi is amazing, fresh, unique and innovative. The vibe is so hip and cool. My favorite are the curtained booths :D The VIP Club is the BEST!! Sushi for 4 of us would have been $100+tip, instead $50+tip. For 4 People, at Sushi! Usually that's easily $80+. Such a great deal, such great food, such a cool vibe. Do it!

After a few days in Provo, my standards have come down. Our checklist went like this: 1. Are the open? 2. Do they serve alcohol? And Happy Sumo fit the bill. The food was standard (according to the waitress: "some people say it is as good as P.F. Chang's!") but not exceptional. The portions were enormous and I would have been happier not eating so much of it, but I came hungry and left without being poisoned so I'll consider it a success.

When I first visited this place, I was little lost. First of all, the name of the restaurant threw me off. I wondered why someone would name a restaurant 'Happy Sumo'. Anyways, I like their Baja Roll, with jalapeno pepper on top! Also recommend firecracker roll and playboy roll (despite the name, it's really good). Service is pretty good. Their fish is very fresh as well. There have one in Provo and one in Salt Lake City.

My wife and I really like sushi, so we went to Happy Sumo because a few of my friends said it was the best in Provo. However, that was very different from our experience. When we first walked in we were quickly seated. The hostess left us at our table, miraculously without saying anything (no, "your waitress will be right with you", or anything else for that matter). After that, we proceeded to wait for 15 minutes without any further human contact. Waitresses serving neighboring tables even ignored us. Finally the manager came by our table and asked us if we had seen our waitress. We hadn't, and he explained that she had just started working on her own. He brought us some waters, and then we ordered (through him). We had been informed that if we joined the VIP club, we could get certain rolls 1/2 off, so we got those rolls, along with an appetizer. He seemed nice, but a little disappointed in how much/what we had ordered. The rolls were ok. And even though we briefly saw our waitress twice following that, we were considering spending more on one of their "signature" rolls (I really wanted to like this place after what my friends had told me); however, they left us waiting for our check for another ten minutes. And by that time we were done waiting. The manager asked us if we were VIP members, and we said we were. He replied, "I thought so, by how you ordered". Again, he seemed disappointed. The Bad - Slow Service - Bad Service - Left us feeling a little judged for using their promotion The Good - Fantastic interior. Great feel to the building.

We had an enjoyable time while eating at happy sumo! The ambiance there is a lot classier then most of the sushi restaurants around orem and provo. We sat down and our server was so nice, and walked us around the menu and gave us suggestions on what to have. We decided to order the lettuce wraps and the tuna tataki which were incredibly delicious! We then got 3 sushi rolls, the Jezabelle, mango mama, and samari. Wow! We were very pleased with how fresh the fish was (considering we are in utah, were there isn't a huge selection of fish available). It was refreshing to get good sushi. We definitely will be back!!!!

Happy Sumo... Let me start by saying I like the atmosphere and decor. I also like the Provo, UT location as I love Riverwoods. Having said that, Happy Sumo doesn't have the best sushi or anything close for the price/image they portray. However, it is okay and I have enjoyed my times there. I like the Mia roll, firecracker, playboy, and I believe Venus? roll. So yup the place is nice and the service is alright. Anyway I just went today and realized I hadn't given it a review so here it is. It's not the best but I won't complain either :)

Overpriced and awful -shushi mostly rice and noodles over cooked and drowned in salty sauce .

  • Aimee G.

While Happy Sumo is certainly most known for the sushi, we enjoyed choices from the other part of the menu. The chicken satay was tasty, and the veggies were fresh. The rice was nice and sticky. Truly the only complaint we had was that the service was slow. They sat us and forgot all about us. I had to track down a server and ask to be helped, not a great start to the meal. Luckily once we did get service they were quick, and even offered us free drinks for the mistake. The mochi balls were very tasty, we tried vanilla and strawberry. It does seem a bit on the high end of price though, but we would return.

Food is easily a 4 to 5 star, at least for me not being the biggest fan of sushi. Plenty of cooked as well as seafood alternatives. That being said the service at Riverwoods has considerably gone from good to horrible. Waitresses and hostess always seem to have something far more important to be doing than taking care of customers. Attitudes are terrible! Here's an idea if you hate customer service don't get into a customer oriented industry. Since when when did TIPS become a requirement even when the service was undeserving. Having been a bartender I always believed that you earned TIPS rather than expect them. To many times have I seen service be sub par and then to have the expectation of gratuity to still be there is shameful, perhaps customer service should be a constant training tool rather than an initial one.

The go to Sushi place of Provo. Atmosphere is nice and there is a wide selection of sushi to choose from which is what I like. It's trendy and popular though so it has all the effects that come with being busy.

    (3)
  • Robyn C.

One of the more trendy sushi places around. The atmosphere is dark, cool and the servers fashionable, of course. One of the more cooler aspects - the take-out menu. It's the size of a business card that houses the entire menu...including a map at the back, directions and all. Again, back to the trendy thing. The menu itself is lined up with non-traditional sushi rolls. Instead, almost everything has cream cheese or some weird aspect to it...such as jalapeno. Scour the menu though, I'm sure something will spark your interest as they have a wide selection. Not into sushi? That's alright since they have an actual sushi-free dinner section in the back of the menu. Served with white rice, they look amazing. The sushi itself was fresh and actually very yummy. Prices are a little steep but considering the location I guess that's acceptable. To sum things up, this is definitely not your typical "I-feel-for-sushi-for-dinner" places, it's more of a "I've-got-a-hot-date" or "Impressive-business-dinner" sushi joints.

No, the sushi isn't good "for Utah." It just isn't good. There are better places in the county and much better places in the state. There is almost no real sushi. This is a sushi bar for people who hate sushi.

Not great, not bad, but overpriced for what you get in quality, The rolls are usually a little sloppy and not rolled tight enough, the fish doesn't always seem of the highest quality or freshness. I had very good service though, and the waitresses are usually easy on the eyes. Its hit or miss most of the time here, not very consistent, and thats its downfall.

The staple for fancy business lunches In the area. They handle large groups well, are quick and efficient, and the rolls are all good. The playboy roll is a favorite, as is the Vegas roll. The saki menu is short but serviceable, but for beer options are basically Sapporo or Kirin.

I'm a huge lover for sushi and Happy Sumo does a very good job in offering a variety of sushi. Now, I'm not a sushi expert (I have only ate sushi at like four different places and Happy Sumo is the best so far). Most importantly, they make it fresh and when they bring it to your table, it looks really professional. The downside is it is very pricey. A typical roll (roughly 6 to 8 pieces each) cost about 10 bucks. However, if you go to their website and sign up as a VIP (100% free), they will send you a monthly email of deals that are happening on a specific days. Most, if not all, of those deals involved half-price sushi (i.e. Tuesday: all specialty rolls half price). I always go on a special deal day and order two or three rolls. With tips, that usually cost me anywhere between $12 to $20. Good place to chill and relax. A big fat wallet will makes the experiences much more enjoyable.

We stood at the hostess booth for ten minutes while the waitresses all walked past staring at us and continuing to not do their job. Once we were seated, our waitress bussed the tables around us without acknowledging us or bringing water. We ordered and waited 30 minutes for our appetizers, the main course took an hour. Worst customer service I have ever experienced.

    (1)
  • Abby W.

The sushi is decent and the entrees are for the most part satisfying. The service is usually poop. The girls that work there are so caught up on flirting with the guys who frequent that it's hard to get seated, let alone good service. One thing Happy Sumo has going for itself is their VIP deals. The prices are actually doable when you go at the right time with your VIP pass.

  • Teng B.

I would rate this place above average sushi. The mood is great, especially for dates. The sushi is very decent, salad tastes nice too. This is definitely a good sushi place to go to around the area. It may seem pricey, however, if you sign up for news feed, they email you weekly coupons (i.e. Friday coupon: all rolls half price). And if you have the coupon on your cell phone, the place is pretty affordable. So I recommend "go!"

A sleek look excites guests when entering. But that is about the only thing that really excited me. The sushi is good, but nothing amazing. It is overpriced for what they are serving. A pretty nice place to take a date (leave the kids at home). It's at the Shops at Riverwoods which is a very cool outdoor area with firepits, music, and more.

Happy Sumo is a great magician. While they are mesmerizing you with their sleek décor, dim lighting, sexy booths, and attractive servers, those same attractive servers are putting plates of mediocre sushi in front of you. But as you take a bite, all you are thinking is how pretty your sushi looks, and how chic the restaurant is, and before you know it you've swallowed, without ever noticing your not-that-impressive- food. You are good Happy Sumo. Very good. But I see through your illusion to what you really are: average sushi that is not worth the trendy price.

  • Troy S.

Compared to the other Americanized Japanese food here in Provo/Orem it was pretty good. One roll is definitely not enough to fill you, but what sushi actually does? That's not the point of sushi, it's all about quality. Good service and nice atmosphere.

It's a sushi chain. What more can I say? Yes yes they have more options than just sushi but for the price?? I say it's not worth it. The atmosphere is pretty cool and hipster-ish and the staff is always great. Would it be my first place to get some sushi and edemame? No. But DEF not my first.
