I love trying out new restaurants and when I saw Mamacita's on University, I decided I had to check it out. I went there for a late lunch and per the prior reviews, the service was a bit slow at the beginning. However, they apologized and once we'd placed our orders, the food came out pretty quickly. We were told it was tapas-style (lots of tasty small dishes) and so we ordered the guacamole, a mushroom quesadilla, chicken tortilla soup, and the scallops. The chips were salted well, the guac was tasty enough, the tortilla soup was great but heavy, and the scallops were plated well, perfectly cooked, but could have used a bit more "zing" to take it up a notch. My main comment is that the pricing is somewhat puzzling. My last experience at a tapas bar was in Seattle, and it was a range of small plates from $8-15 or so, with the more expensive ones being super fancy/plated in gold leaf or whatever. The guac was $5. The soup was $5. The quesadilla was $5. The scallops were $15. The guac was small. The soup was sizeable. The quesadilla is bigger and more substantial than Guru's. The scallops were normal to small (5 total, plus the bed of creamed corn and asparagus). If you ate the soup or the quesadilla, you would walk out of the restaurant pleasantly full for $5, and yet they were billed as appetizers/tapas. I... don't understand. I want these guys to succeed partially because that location is cursed and partially because their food is tasty, but trying to figure out how much food you'll end up with is a bit like a gastronomical choose your own adventure. Last comment: our server was polite and professional (anyone else hate the snooty wait staff at other local "nice" joints?) and gave us both a $5 off card for our next meal. Bonus!

If you are looking to spend a lot of money on decent food, go to Mamacitas. I don't really understand what it's trying to accomplish? (obviously make money) The music does not match the food, or century. I was super lucky, I went with two friends, who let me have a bite of their tacos. Mine were by far the best (and most expensive). I ordered the carne asada tacos, get that and you won't be disappointed. It is overly priced though. I cannot say that enough. The queso appetizer was pretty good, and just so you know the salsas that you order are not blended at all (not that that is a bad thing, just something to know). The service is great. But they did not yet have an ATM machine when I was there so they were using a telephone for cards, major fail. All in all, not spectacular but not horrible. I place Mamacitas on my list of "if you like trying new things go here" otherwise not worth it.

I was so excited to try the place! Soo disappointing. I wish I would have read the other reviews before going. I agree with the other yelpers: the music was horrible.. loud rap. not my favorite. The food took ages to come out. Seriously, FOREVER. They gave us complimentary desserts for the wait which was nice, but the desserts came out before our dinner did!! It was kind of ridiculous. The people were nice, but I can't say I will be returning because the food was meh and the experience was horrible.

This is my second stop here. I am starting to love this place. A bit pricey compared to other taco/south of the border places in town but the food here is what sets it apart. If you are willing to pay a couple bucks more for flavors that pop, this is your place. The service was much better this visit. McKenna took care of us. The queso-fundido appetizer is awesome. Lots of cheesy-goodness wrapped into a bowl of yumminess. This ain't no nacho cheese... The fish tacos are wow! Also enjoyed the Blackened Salmon Salad. All-in-all I think this place has real potential. The food is great. Service is prompt and they took care of our every need. I just hope they can stand out among the masses in Provo. Their biggest challenge is that there are places like 180 Tacos that are much cheaper serving similar tasty menu items. Their per plate cost may prove difficult in Provo... Give 'em a shot people!!!

We've been here since 5:30, ordered at 5:40, and we're still waiting for appetizers at 5:50. There are only 3 other tables occupied so I'm not sure what's taking so long. For a "Mexican" restaurant, their music selection is interesting (more old west than Hispano): "Oh Brother Where Art Thou", "Johnny Cash", old-school country like "Mamas Don't let your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys." Then some "All About the Base" booty song, and finally half of "Wrecking Ball" by Miley Rae Cyrus. All of our food came at the same time and honestly, it was worth the wait. We had the Guacamole, Queso Fundido, Fish Tacos (beer battered), and Chicken Enchiladas. I wouldn't get both the Queso Fundido and Guacamole together again because they both come with fresh chips. Loved the fish tacos and chicken enchiladas. Great serving size and fresh food for sure. We would definitely come here again. Only recommendation is they bring appetizers sooner so we have room on the table for all the quality food. They did throw in the Queso Fundido for free because it took so long, so that was appreciated. (They could make a more themes playlist too. :) )

I was told that the food here served in the style tapas. To me that often seems to code for "you're going to get a little food but you'll be charged a lot". That is the case at Mamacitas. I have been there twice, the first time I had the scallops and they were very good. The second time I had the pork tenderloin , that not quite as good, but it was still good. My wife had the fish tacos and she loved them, but for the money you don't get much taco.

I hope that Mamacitas works out the kinks in their menu and service, because it is a wonderful location and they've clearly put a lot of thought into the design and feel of the interior space. I hope they put an equal amount of thought into responding to the feedback in some of these reviews. I agree with a previous reviewer that the tapas concept gets pretty lost here. I have been saying for years that someone should open a tapas bar here, but this isn't quite what I had in mind. The pricing is very confusing- I didn't know how much food to order based on the prices. There was nothing under $5.00, and at least half the menu was $10.00 or over. I figured it was just pricier tapas so we ordered several different items.....and it was WAY too much food. The items are pretty much entrée size, which baffled me. Make the items smaller and less expensive-- that's what tapas actually means. That and the fact that there aren't enough menu options to have a real tapas experience. All that being said, some of the food was yummy. I liked the guacamole a LOT and the fish and pork tacos were pretty good. The overall problem here was a lack of heat and spice in any of our dishes. The chilaquiles, recommended to us, would have been good except the salsa just lacked any real heat or flavor. The house salad had no hint of mexican flavor, which is fine, but confusing. The strawberries and cucumbers in the salad seemed to be marinated in something- making them not crisp or fresh anymore. Not horrible, just odd. Nothing we had felt gourmet or unique. Service was awkward to say the least. My guess is new place=new servers- not a deal breaker for me but the staff didn't seem well trained. I will come back after they've been open for a little longer and form my final opinion, but I wish them well. They will add a great deal to downtown if they figure this place out and make it work.

I was really wanting to like this place, but ultimately, it fell short. It was overpriced for the atmosphere provided, the main dishes were nothing to rave about, the music was incessantly terrible and the billing process was poorly planned. On the plus side, our waitress was great; super friendly and very attentive. To start, the restaurant is light and open with a trendy feel: exposed brick, mason jar glasses and carved wood benches. So first impressions are good. The music was cover bands singing top hits from artists like Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber. It was bad, and couldn't be ignored. We ordered the queso appetizer, which was great at first, but then it had an odd plastic after-taste that kind of ruined it. I got the blackened salmon salad, which would've been good, but the salmon was wayyyy too salty and there wasn't enough actual salad underneath it to offset that. And then dessert: avocado cheesecake. This will be the only reason I return. Mildly sweet slice of pie with a crunchy cinnamon crust and tart raspberry sauce. It was fantastic. The bill was a hand written diner receipt followed by the waitress bringing out an iPad to electronically select a tip amount and then sign for the card. Not a fan of that kind of pressure as the waitress holds the tablet.

Ate there today, got 3 dishes. Here is the breakdown: Pros: Nice atmosphere Music (other people complained, but I enjoyed it. rodrigo y gabriela) Some food (the basic -no meat- quesadilla is pretty solid). Cons: NO FREE CHIPS/SALSA (just something I've come to expect from a sit-down mexican restaurant, and can get at good places like Milagros) Food (The pork and chicken had NO flavor, but cost an additional $3 on a $5 quesadilla) Price (while not 'way over-priced', still too expensive for a place that wants to charge for the privileged of eating their chips and salsa). At this price range, I'd prefer Emanuels, or if I want a sit down atmosphere and am willing to pay a buck or two more, I'll drive up to Milagros, be greedy, and eat the free chips and salsa with the rest of my meal. Chances are with my wife working nearby we will venture in again. If anything changes, I'll change my review.

I loved every bite! Great atmosphere, great service, and delicious food! My favorite thing I got was the chicken quesadilla. I'm definitely going to come back.

Mamacitas has great food. My only complaints are no complimentary chips and salsa. Since you're paying for small plates I found it hard to get full. I think the complimentary chips/salsa would make this place more attractive for me.

The food was bland, overpriced, and slow. But at least the service was overbearing and needy! Nothing was BAD, but really nothing was good either. Pass.

The food is just pretty good. It earned a simultaneous nod and a shrug from both my wife and me. A little bit disappointing for the price. The restaurant looks great though. The service was good. Our desert was pretty bland. The bottom line is that I probably won't go back.

Finally some fine dining in Utah county! I had steak tacos and it was like eat filet minion. Service was great and had a really cool unique atmosphere. I would highly recommend.

It's kinda like an over priced hipster Mexican restaurant. We ordered the nachos which were nothing special. My wife ordered the fish taco. She didn't finish it. I took a bite and it was pretty weird tasting. Save your money. Go to Taco Bell.

Yummy food! Not as overpriced as similar restaurants. definitely not your typical Mexican food. I loved the pork belly tacos! Everything we tried there was so good! Soon they will even have a full bar!!! It is definitely not the kind of restaurant I'm used to seeing in Provo Utah. And they try to locally source as much as they can. I love that! I will definitely go back!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
