I have enjoyed so many meals at this place. They make excellent tortas (the milanesa is one of my favorites) and the molcajete is huge and delicious. As other's said, you get your bang for your buck which seems to closely tied with one's satisfaction level I think (citation needed :)) Also, they make good agua fresca such as their horchate which is delicious. It is a the thinner, not to sweet, summer refreshment kind, not the thicker dessert one that you may have come across. Finally, they provide a salsa bar in which a green avocado sauce is a must have. It seems to be a favorite as it has run out on occasion. Visit this place. It will be money well spent.

Great food. The tender whole chicken is moist and flavorful. Corn tortillas are awesome and moist and not like some piece of paper.

Since moving from Los Angeles, I haven't had much authentic Mexican food in Utah other than Red Iguana, Chipotle, and Barbacoa. But after coming to El Gallo Giro, I have found my love for Mexican food again. Right when we stepped inside, the ambiance was great and felt very authentic. I ordered the lengua, pork, and Asada tacos along with an enchilada and some guacamole. The lengua was delicious and its texture was perfect. The pork and Asada were just as amazing and felt like I was back in California eating at one of the taco stands. The guacamole was great because the waitress smashed the avocados right in front of us and made the guacamole at the table. Their salsa bar was also great, where they had various kinds, including mango salsa. And finally, the horchata was amazing as well. We had driven about at hour to come here and it was definitely worth the drive. I will definitely be back for more.

Do they not have health inspectors in this town? I wish I saw that dirty nasty kitchen before I ordered. I actually saw a guy washing down the oven and that nasty black soapy water flying right into that tub of straight from the can retried beans over and over. I walked out and didn't even ask for a refund. This place should be shutdown immediately. Get your act together!!

Went in for breakfast, must have been too early, they really weren't set up. Breakfast took a long time to prepare, there was also some confusion with the order. Food was ok, we like it spicy, spicy it wasn't even though we ask for it that way. Maybe lunch/dinner is better. I would give it one more shot. Good flavor just no heat at all. The pickled onions wee yummy. Lastly, it was freezing in there, ice cube toes. Not comfortable.

I think the plates for the price were a little disappointing but the food itself is pretty good quality and I would probably go here again.

I am surprised I didn't review this place after my first visit, but for some reason it took me a while to get back here again. I would definitely consider this one of the best options for mexican food in Utah county (certainly in provo). Actually, it may be your only option. The people are nice, the food is made to order, and they do table side guacamole. It's also clean, inexpensive, and includes a wonderful salsa bar. There's ALSO an outdoor deck area that looks quite lovely. I've bad a variety of menu items here--all equally good. You can read other reviews for those details- I won't repeat it all. As I'm writing this, I'm wondering to myself why I don't come here more often!

I came back here twice since my first time here hoping it would meet the expectations set by my first visit. I was greatly disappointed. They do well with one order per person, but if you go in a group, you can expect them to mess up/forget an order altogether. You're better off to do separate tickets on the same card than one large order. The food is good, but they ran out of like 2 or three things that I wanted... I was disappointed. It's okay to run out of things, but they made no effort to solve the problem.

My favorite Mex in Provo. The "Tacos Mr.Joe" are my favorite thing on the menu. Also, be sure to get some Guacamole. They will come to your table and make it fresh right in front of you.

Passing by Provo and my husband said he remembers this place being pretty good so we stopped by. I got a California burrito and he got the chicken fiesta plate. The waiters were nice and polite. The atmosphere is cute and neat. Spacious tables and seems very good for groups. I love Mexican food and was so excited to try this place! And then come the chips and salsa.... And things kinda went down hill from there. First, the chips were a little bit stale and salsa really didn't have much flavor, kind of bitter. It's alright, at least I still have my burrito... Nope! A typical California burrito to me would have at least a bit of avocado and some pico de gallo but this one basically was composed of refried beans, really fatty meat (& it was extremely chewy for me) French fries, and cheese. I had like 10 (yeah, I counted it) diced pieces of "pico de gallo" on the side on a bed of lettuce but that's it. I was so sad. Looking over at my husbands chicken fiesta plate.. The portion was small in our opinion. He had two thin slices of chicken, rice, and some broccoli and cauliflowers... chicken was well flavored and veggies tasted fresh and well cooked but my husband was still hungry after. On the other note he likes the fruit flavored drink that came with his meal. I thought it tasted like diluted sugary fruit flavored drink, personally I don't think it's that good. The nice waiter came after to ask how was the food and we said it was aight.. Then he was like oh ok. I felt bad telling him I did not like it at all bc he seems so nice when we were ordering lol. Anyways, my husband is still feeling bad and said he owes me big time for recommending this place, so still a win for me I think.

Every time my wife and I make the trip from Arizona to Park City we stop in at El Gallo Giro for lunch. Our favorite is the Monterrey Chicken. So tasty and make sure you get some of their homemade tortilla shells. Mmmmmm so good.

I'm 80% sure i already wrote a review for el gallo... a las... not so. I think the thing i like most about this place is no matter what if you flash your mission spanish, you will get a little flirty wirty back... not that i like that, but I know some people do. So lets start with how to pronounce the name, because one of my friends girlfriends who claimed superior knowledge of the spanish language because of her heritage... was dead wrong. El Gallo I think we all know, it is el guy yo. It is the Giro that cause he some problems, it like hero... but like heero. So L Guy Yo He Row. So... just think of a guy rowing and you wont be an idiot. Oh wow... so sorry to anyone wanting to know more about the food. It is pretty yummy, I like that it is in door. Definitely not the place for tacos (even though their tacos are good) I am really into their enchiladas. YOU WILL SPEND A LITTLE MONEY HERE! It is not sit down but kind of costs the amount of sit down. But it is really nice inside and you know they got the horchata!!! Which is okay... my exclamation marks were misleading. THE VERDICT: If there is one thing provo does right... its mexican food. This place is good and if you play your cards right you might be able to get a date out of it. maybe Ill see you there tomorrow. I am really addicted to sodium right now.

Stopped in for lunch on Friday, excited to try another taco/Mexican place in town, but left severely disappointed with no intentions on returning. As usual I ordered an assortment of tacos, both as part of a meal (Tres Tacos) and the a la carte "street tacos". Nothing particularly memorable about any of the food other than the chicken was an unusual yellow color. I'm not a huge refried beans fan, but that was the highlight of the meal (that's not a good sign). I'm still trying to figure out why street tacos had lettuce and cheese on them... perhaps to bury the lackluster flavor of the meat? My date and I actually joked the next day how relieved we were to not get food poisoning from this place. It's not exactly horrible food, but there are better options for Mexican food in town. Additionally, the man who "greeted" us (appeared to be an owner/manager) was very unfriendly, unwilling to explain what was in dishes, and seemed to be bothered by us coming into his restaurant. So sorry to bother you, we won't be back.

Would like to review this place on their food...but we didn't get a chance because we walked in 20 minutes before they were closing and told us "sorry we are closed". I said "I thought you closed at 9:30?" And she said "Yeah...but we already have our kitchen cleaned..." Wow!

I have been to El Gallo Giro a few times before making this review (to really get a feel for the restaurant). The food has always been on point, but sadly to say not the service. Be aware that they are not the best at admitting their mistakes (which an employee or manager will inevitably make from time to time). They will take any complaints received from customers as a personal attack. Maybe it's a small business thing, nevertheless not right and unprofessional. Example: Our vegetarian friend was told that the Pozole could be made without meat, well she found meat in the first two bites. The owner told her that she didn't want customers like her in her restaurant. The owner refused to refund the money twice until finally we asked a third time. (The refund was given back in change just to make things more difficult). Talk about pride.

Delicious food at a great price. Ambience is great and authentic Mexican. Had grilled chicken fiesta, rice with refried beans, grilled beef and bacon that were all delicious

This is hands down my favorite Mexican restaurant in Provo. Not only is the food authentic and delicious, but the employers are very friendly. I recommend the Sweet Pork Burrito, Tacos Mr. Joe, or their Chicken Entree with fresh juice. Also, try the guacamole! They make it fresh at your table.

This is one of our top 3. Lunch or dinner, we love this place. The carne asada, grilled chicken...the bomb. The service is to top notch, and the owners are super cool!!

I love the salsa bar and the agua frescas that they always have - definitely the highlight of my visit each time. The student specials are a great deal, but I wish they were a little bigger and possibly included a burrito. I love that they have sopes on the menu though. Great food, great price, and always quick!

Please read: Let me just start and say the food is great. With that said, we took out friend who is visiting from Miami, Florida to try Mexican food. She is vegetarian, she let the employees know right away before ordering. She asked for input, she ended up ordering the Pozole WITHOUT meat! While we began eating she found pork and quickly told an employee, they guaranteed her that there was no meat. Finally, an employee came over to see for herself and took it back. After the truth came out, and they explained the dish is pre-made for the day with meat broth, which is fine but seeing how she is vegetarian you can see the problem. One of the young ladies who suggested the dish, insulted my friend, and said she should have let them know more information. Mind you, they had a 10 minute conversation before making the order. She asked for her money back and were hesitant to do so. They tried to undermine her and gave her a few dollars short of her actually bill. When I went to talk to the owner. An older women she was RUDE, and PRIDEFUL!!! when you're in the restaurant business it is not just about the food it is about the service. The owner basically told me that she SHOULD have already known how Pozole is made, that is was my friends fault. I told her that she needs to except different types of people in her restaurant who will not know about Mexican food. I am Colombian and my friend Bolivian so this conversation was in Spanish. The owner was upset because in the end she had to throw away the bowl of Pozole (which in reality it was the end of the day, they should throw away food each day if made fresh). She didn't want to give back the money. she told my fiend "I don't want to deal with people like you" and gave my friend her money back in all nickels which had no purpose. The restaurant really needs a crash course on customer service or they will ruin themselves. I told the owner, that she should know the client is always right. anyways I won't be returning.

I've lived in Utah valley for most of my life and have tried many Mexican restaurants during my time here. El Gallo Giro is easily one of my and my family's favorites. Good portion sizes and delicious food. I usually get the enchiladas or a quesadilla y siempre me quedo satisfecho.

Nice atmosphere and pleasant service. The food is why I held back a star. The beans were to salty and my fish tacos were missing that special sauce.

I love this restaurant. My husband and I love to meet here for lunch. He loves the seafood cocktail. We also love to share the paradilla, which is a huge sizzling plate of steak, pork, and chicken cooked with vegetables and served with tortillas and rice and beans. It's enough to feed at least 4 people, so we always have lots of leftovers. Today I tried the chicken tacos which are seriously the best chicken tacos I have ever eaten, they were so full of flavor. If you want something a little lighter, I often get the quarter chicken served with vegetables. The restaurant is family owned and everyone is super friendly.

One of the ONLY places open on an early Sunday morning....at least highly Yelp-rated anyways. We were just passing through Provo after visiting my sister a bit farther North. Since it was a bit early, I was feelin like a breakfast burrito of sorts. Tried an Al Pastor Breakfast Burrito....This was pretty yummy! Lots of egg and potato smashed up inside, and portion size was large and fairly priced. The al pastor had a good amount of flavor and tender meat. They brought some fresh chips and salsa to the table after we ordered at the counter. It's so easy to get this wrong...but they do it RIGHT here! You'll probably end up eating EVERY chip like we did :P Speaking of salsa, they had some AWESOME salsa at the bar...CAN SOMEONE HELP ME WITH A NAME?? It tasted like chilis with tons of butter...anyone know the name of it? Where can I find this in Vegas??? Also, LOVE the Horchata here! If you look closely at the pic, you can see all that cinnamon goodness hiding on the bottom! Plus, since it's self serve, I can destroy it LOL! I probably drank my body weight in this liquid GOLD. Lastly, I tried my Mother's order of Menudo. I can't say I am a big menudo fan, but the broth here was pretty tasty. It's mainly because I don't usually enjoy Tripe, but this version was pretty tender at least. Comes out piping hot so beware! Check this place out for great food at inexpensive prices! I was impressed...Provo, you surprised me!

This place is great if you know what you're doing. A lot of the items are very authentic and their meat is fantastic. The rock is a great way to fill 2-4 people up, with fantastic presentation. Probably the best Mexican food in the area.

Like most said, I ventured in a Sunday, as it is one of the only places open in Utah County for Mexican that comes VERY Yelp recommended. It earns the 4 to 5 star rating, and it's legit. The menu was so robust that I asked for the house recommendations and got the Pastor, with some tortillas. It was great and a very flavorful meal. If you want some good Horchata with your meal. If ever I'm back in this area and craving some Mexican food, it'll be one of the places I would recommend we go to in a heartbeat. As mentioned in other reviews, the cost isn't bad, we got out of there for $20 for 2 people. You pretty much order at the counter, take a seat and they wait on your table afterward. They bring plenty of refills of Chips and Salsa. If you're in that area, I always recommend that you check this place out and see how it ranks your book.

By far the best Mexican restaurant in Utah County. I love the value you get and quality of food. The servers take on the owner's personalities which is fun and very hospitable. Try the lunch specials. The sopas are great. The Malibu chicken is amazing. Complimentary chips/salsa. The fruit drinks hits the spot. Get there early if you go for lunch. Its popularity fills the place up quick. If you haven't tried it as always wondered about, here's your chance to be wow'ed!!

This may be one of the few reviews I believe I could write using only vowels. But, I'll spare you my gutteral ooo's and aaa's this time. This is some very tasty and fresh Mexican food, which as far as I can tell is about as authentic as it gets up in these parts. Our first visit here made me a rabid fan. EGG is located in the old Pizza Hut dine-in restaurant, but none of that 1980's stain remains. It's well decorated inside like an authentic Mexican place should be, even if it's not at all swanky. The chips and salsa course was highlighted by their impressive salsa bar. There were at least three different salsas I one-by-one deemed my favorite until I tried the next one. The chips were standard, but who cares? They're quite sufficient vehicles for scooping that fantastic salsa into your mouth. Also on this bar were a few choices of beverages in large dispensers (horchata, flavored limonade, etc.); obviously fresh-made there. Hubby ordered the Sweet Pork Burrito plate. So, when our awesome waitress brought the plates out, I was seriously impressed she could even carry Hubby's burrito alone, not to mention both our plates. It was five pounds of burrito if it was a single ounce. And he ate every bit of it. He was hurting when he was done, but he couldn't stop. I tried it, and it really was fabulous. My spirits fell just a little due to order envy...until I tried my food. Despite being hypnotized by a dish they call "The Rock," I ordered a combination plate of a Chile Relleno and a Pork Tamale. I didn't expect it to be this good, honestly. I truly loved it - the tamale filling was absolutely delicious, as was the masa mix on the outside. The relleno used a huge fresh Poblano pepper, which is more flavorful than your average Anaheim, Hatch or ancho chile. From the cheesy filling to the batter, it was surprisingly good. Although I was terribly, painfully full, I girded my loins, and got through it. Their rice and beans are pretty standard, but trust me, if you're eating the other food, you won't mind skipping them. Another nice surprise is that the pricing structure is more than fair at EGG. Our bill - including Hubby's bottled Mexican Coke - came to less than $25, including tip. For what they appear to be (a standard Mexican chain with table service), they deserve five big, loud stars! They know exactly what they're doing, and how to please my pallet. We will be regulars here.

Ahh! This place is delicious! Hubby had a California burrito which he loved! I had a lengua taco & menudo. Both were extremely flavorful! The salsa bar was awesome! So many salsas!

This place was alright. I wouldn't go here again. One of the people in our group had burned chicken and asked to have it replaced. The replacement was still pretty burned. Not terrible, but not that good.

What an awesome find in Provo, Utah of all places! I was not prepared for the fried fish in the fish tacos but other than that we enjoyed the food. The staff were very friendly and we especially loved the guacamole (made at the table). Next time we are ordering street tacos, we were over-dressed for it this time.

This is just decent fairly inexpensive fast food Mexican food. I can see why local college students like it but otherwise it is just basic. FYI - They do not take Amex. You order at the counter and they bring out the food this is not a sit down restaurant fyi. Yes they have a salsa bar. I went in at 8pm and they don't close until 9:30pm. The salsa bar looked like a tornado hit it and it was almost empty. They had it cleaned up and gone by 8:30pm. They normally have dr. pepper to drink but they were out of it. (Very Sad) I ordered the guacamole and was excited cause I read they make it fresh table side. They did not! It did appear to be made fresh but maybe after 8pm they don't make it at your table. This was unlike any guacamole I have ever had. It was more like guacamole salsa. It was just large chunks of avocado mixed with big pieces of onion and tomato. It was fresh and ok but just not what I expected at all. The food was just average. Yes you get full and yes it is pretty cheap overall but it is not good food. If you actually want food with taste I would say go any where else. If you just want to eat and not spend a lot of money then maybe this is the place to go. I will not return.

I live in California and have family in Utah. I think I know what mexican food tastes like because there is tons of good places to eat here in Southern Ca. At Gallo Giro, the chicken was a bit extra crispy burned and the sauce was watery What caught my eye: The Mexican owner was calling a couple of South American customers bad names in Spanish because this couple of customers were complaining to him that they had been overcharged for some side orders of tortillas and frijoles.

    (2)
  • Ryan B.

El Gallo Giro is great if you want cheap, quality food. They make authentic Mexican food that is delicious. They cook it fresh to order and have fantastic orchata. The portions are large and the food is cheap, it's a great place to go if you're craving Mexican food. The only downside is that it doesn't have much seating, but if you don't go during peak hours you can relax and enjoy your food.

I was really looking forward to some fresh fish tacos today and thought I would try this place since the reviews were good. What a mistake!!! This place is horrible. I ordered the three fish taco combo to go with a side of chips and salsa. To start the fish is deep fried. Not necessarily a bad thing, if done right. This was not done right. The oil in the fryer is obviously not hot enough. I could literally press the grease out of the fish. The fish was obviously frozen. It was just a breaded piece of mush. Then comes the seasoning or should I say lack of seasoning. It wasn't even salted. I thought Hispanic food was all about deep flavor profiles. Well, not here. Lastly, let's talk price. I was fine with $8.50 for three fish tacos with rice and beans, but what gets me is the almost $6 price tag they charged me for a side of chips and salsa. I won't be coming back here. My food was so bad that I couldn't even finish it. I threw $15 in the trash tonight. Thanks for nothing.

Other Californians (note that I do live there) will flip their shit but, the fact is, you will not find the best Mexican food in California. In CA, there seems to be a perpetual problem with making decent tortillas, the meat is never very high-quality (or it's super-expensive), and they seem to insist on putting guacamole on everything, at least where I live (which is, granted, the avocado region). The stuff in Texas is either Tex Mex or just outright crap, and there are only a few other parts of the country where I'll even try it. I've known Provo and, to a lesser extent, Salt Lake, to have excellent Mexican food in the past. The sort of Mexican food that I used to get in Tucson. The places where the tortillas are made just down the street, the meat is cooked on a grill over a fire, and the horchata did not start out as a powder. For what it is, this place is good. There is an excellent selection of tacos, and the carne asada was very good. The pastor was a bit different than what I'm used to, but I liked it. They also have nopales (menu'd as "cactus"), which I always appreciate as a healthy alternative. I didn't think much of either salsa I tried: the one that came with the chips wasn't spicy (though tasty), the red sauce from the bar had too much chipotle, and the green sauce from the bar had no serving spoon. But they have pozole and menudo, but maybe just on the weekends. The meat in the pozole was a bit dry and there wasn't much flavor. My experience has also been that you can usually choose the color (green, white or red), but the choice wasn't offered here: I got red. But maybe they don't sell enough to make it worth the effort of making different batches. Big minus: they put lettuce, tomato and cheese on my tacos. Maybe that's the gringo dressing, but I wish they would have said something. So, when you go, say "leave that shit off my taco." Service was really confused. When I ordered the pozole, it seemed to cause a tornado of sorts among the plentiful staff members, and I had to go remind them about it a few minutes later. The guy who took my order couldn't really answer my questions. I feel like a description is essential when you have something just called "Quesadilla Gringa," and "I don't know" is not a description. To their credit though, he was new. The prices were reasonable, though I noted that their tacos are $1.50, which is 50% higher than the place down the street. But I haven't actually tried the latter. I would come back.

The food is delicious. They have freshly made fruit drinks as well. The chips and salsa were on point. Not too spicy with the perfect amount of cilantro. I see the prior reviews seem to bag on the service, but I had a great experience and will definitely be going back anytime I'm needing Mexican food in Utah County.

Love it. There are a ton of menu options, and some are ok, but some are amazing. There is so much variety and flavor. I have a lot more dishes I want to try. The cochinita pibil is delicious, the tacos al pastor are cheap and awesome. The mole is good but really spicy. Overall it's amazing.

Great unexpected surprise. Loved the place and loved the food. Very reasonably priced and fairly authentic (not real americanized). Visited Utah on the Motorcycle to see my Son and his Lovely wife when we came across the place. It is one of the few places in Provo that are open on a Sunday and this deserves an extra star. Staff are eager to please and food was delivered in a timely manner. I love this place and will come back when in Provo.

Went there because it got the best reviews. Ordering is like at a fast food place. The food however is not fast food quality. We got the guacamole...made fresh at our table. My husband got the chili relleno and tamale meal. The tamale wasn't horrible, but not amazing. The chili relleno he did not like at all. There was just something off about the flavor. I got a chicken enchilada and chicken chimichanga. I am not a huge fan of red sauce, these guys make it great! I would totally eat it again. The chimichanga, I can't give a review on that because they originally gave me a bean and cheese one and realized it after they brought it out. I was told they were making me a new one and would bring it out shortly. After 20 min and still not having it, I went and asked if it was still coming. I ended up just taking it home and eating it later, which it didn't taste good at all. There was a guy there, not sure if he was the owner it manager, but super friendly and welcoming. Gave opinions to better items on the menu. They have a "salsa bar" with probably 4-5 different salsas that are ok. In the salsa bar they also have jugs of Horchata, limeade and something mango. They were all great and unlimited refills.

El Gallo Giro is my favorite mexican restaurant in Provo. The atmosphere lends a more authentic feeling to the experience. I love that they have several drink options other than soda (horchata and more) and a nice salso bar. My favorite item on the menu is the Tacos Mr. Joe, or combo#1.

  • Kaitlyn W.

Super authentic and good! The restaurant was well kept and the service was good. I liked my enchilada alright (wasn't my favorite, but not bad) but the beans and rice were great! Some of my favorite I've had! One thing to note, the salsa bar didn't look fresh, and in fact I didn't even try it because I was afraid of getting sick. It seemed out of place because the rest of the restaurant was so well kept. My husbands burrito was really great though! Overall, I thought it was good and want to go again

My wife is a restaurant snob- I some how pried her away from cafe rio to go here based on reviews. She loved it. Staff was attentive and helpful. Everything was fresh and delicious. My favorite was the guacamole that was prepared fresh at our table.

My husband and I were excited to come here after seeing all the good reviews. I got chicken tacos and my husband got cabesa tacos. Neither of us liked our meals. He usually loves horchata but he said that it was tasteless. Which was exactly carried on with our tacos. The chips were good but we weren't that impressed with the salsa. Unfortunately, we won't ever be coming back.

I love this place! The guacamole is awesome, made right at your table. The juices are so great and the rice and beans are our favorite! Everything we have had has been so good! The salsa bar is a can't miss too.

Oh my gosh this place is awesome. Freshly made guacamole made right in front of you. The family platter is huge, it fed 4 people plus 2 very full left over boxes. Shrimp were big and juicy. Chips and Tortillas appeared to be hand made.

Food is Ok but owner makes mistakes in charges of extras (tortillas, side order of beans, etc). He corrects his mistake after being confronted but his attitude is not a nice one. Owner went irate towards my friend and suspected him of being south american. Mexican owner went weird saying mean things about south americans. Very weird experience.

I went here based on all the good reviews but it was nothing like people were saying. We waited forever on our food and they got our order all wrong even though we went through it three times. They didn't give us any utensils or napkins with our to-go order and honestly the food tastes like taco amigo. Not saying that's bad, I would just rather go to taco amigo based on time efficiency and price. Probably won't ever go here again.

I've tried my fair share of Mexican food, and none of it comes close to the quality I experienced here. Everything was fantastic! When I get shrimp tacos it's usually hit or miss, and this was a true bullseye.

the tacos here are perfection. chicken is moist, asada is flavorful, mango salsa is delicious and pricing is not bad.

My wife and I went here for the first time the other day. We really enjoyed it. I'm really picky on my mexican food. I haven't found anything in Utah with the same quality that I find in Arizona, but this place is decent. I have the carne asada torta which was good. I always like guacamole on my tortas so I added that as a side. It was like 5 bucks for the side which was expensive but they did make the guacamole right at our table so at least it was fresh and a decent amount. My wife had the enchiladas which she enjoyed, but I thought they weren't great. The enchilada sauce tasted almost like it was out of a can. Overall, this place is good enough for us to go back, given that most mexican places around here aren't that great.

We went here solely based on blind faith in Yelp reviews, so well done, Yelp reviewers. You did not disappoint. The outside looked a little rundown but the smells of food coming from the back were enough to entice me in. We got there right before the dinner rush so the line was very short. The girl taking our order was extremely helpful and answered all of our newbie questions. And the prices cannot be complained about. After ordering, our food was out to us much much quicker than I expected. It was some of the fastest food delivery I've had at a sitdown kind of restaurant. And the food was delicious. I had the tacos and I highly recommend ordering those. The only downside was that there was no air conditioning. I don't know if that's standard or their unit was broken, but the place was sweltering. But because they brought us our food so fast, we didn't have to be there any longer than we wanted.

This is as good as it gets in Provo. I stopped by for a weekday dinner with my brother and his wife. We each ordered the daily special, $6.99, which consisted of a 3 chicken chalupa tacos, rice and beans, a drink, and desert. Prices are affordable. Service was fast and was somewhere between full service restaurant and cafe rio. Honestly if I have any gripe it is the service model: they bring your entree, chips, napkins, and plastic silverware but don't refill drinks and you probably won't see them much. I think if they at least made napkins readily available that would be an improvement (Mexican food can be messy!). We were in a hurry and actually forgot our desert but they caught us and gave us an ice cream with fried cinnamon sugar tortilla desert which my brother and his wife enjoyed. The food was excellent. The chalupa had the authentic potato hash and the tortilla was fried just perfectly. The chips were just average but the salsa bar was amazing. They have their own mango salsa which tasted fresh-made to me. They also had a plethora of other salsa options to choose from: roasted salsa, two green tomatillo salsas, and a couple red salsas too. There was a lot of salsa options and I honestly don't think I listed them all because I was so enamored with the smooth green salsa and mango salsa that I didn't care to even try the others. Rice and beans smothered with salsa was fantastic. I will definitely be back as soon as I get back to Provo. I also understand from my brother that their whole and half chickens are amazing and is a meal not soon forgotten.

My favorite Mexican place in Provo, hands down. I've had the fish tacos, the sweet pork burrito, Tacos Mr. Joe, the quarter/half chicken (marinated), and several other dishes. They're all amazing. The salsa bar is excellent, and I love the free refills on horchata, jamaica, and aguas de melon, pina, fresa, mango, etc. The staff is friendly and helpful, and relatively they recently added a couple of flat screens for the menu, which makes it easier to read. It seems to always be busy, too. Most truly authentic Mexican places cater to Hispanics, and most places that cater to gringos like myself aren't all that authentic, but this place appears to do both very well.

  • Hailey S.

OK so it looks extremely sketch on the outside, but inside is wonderful. The menu board goes across the front of the restaurant offering the widest array of Mexican dishes you can imagine. They have a salsa bar that offers about eight different salsas to choose from. Their menu is extensive and inexpensive. I usually get their carne asada tacos and I've never been disappointed. My husband loves the burritos, and the chips. If you want quality Mexican skip Cafe Rio and come here. Be careful though, it gets really busy and you might have to get your food to go.

I finally entered the building I have seen for months but never dared to enter. At first I thought I had walked into a dark musty meat brewery, but then I noticed that 80% of the guests were Hispanic. This must be the right place. Ordering blindly for the first time I felt like Steve Jobs mulling over the next project. The Pork Burrito sounded promising; it seemed to pop out from the rest of the many, many choices. I walked to my table feeling like at any time I might hit my head on the low hanging fixtures. All eyes seemed to be on me, the outside prospector coming in on their gold rush. A 50 inch TV was located in 2 corners making me feel somewhat at home while Real Salt Lake had their soccer balls handed to them. I then was pleasantly surprised by a big basket of chips and salsa. The salsa was the perfect amount of spice for a white newbie. It had the same consistency of V8 juice, tomato based and lukewarm. The chips were so crunchy I could no longer hear the business chatter going around the room. More than 3 times the sharp, crispy chips jabbed into my gums making them apart of me in an undesirable fashion. There seemed to be large gallon jugs in the middle of the room whose contents are unknown to an outsider like myself. Knowing the contents meant knowing who is who in the El Gallo community. I was then broken out of my haze of inadequacy by a plate the size of Little Mexico. Put before me was far from the typical Pork Burrito you see on bus benches or inside Cafe Rio. This was the size of a small pig wrapped in a paradisiacal tortilla ready to be consumed by a hero. Today I was that hero. Never before has $6.60 given you a ride like this. Never before has $6.60 taken you to Mexico in a private jet. The meat was sweet; it had a cherubic like innocence as if the cook had made this burrito for the first time. It was pure. If you plan on eating light this is not the place for you. The flavor was too good to ignore and you end up eating all of the torso sized meal. I would be surprised if they ever hand out take home boxes for leftovers. If you have trouble sleeping or feeling at peace, El Gallo Giro is your homestead.

I know the owner and he is a major delta bravo. He's very prideful and doesn't care about his customer service. It's sad because his food is actually pretty good. Tonight was the last straw. My wife always orders a simple cheese quesadilla and they can never seem to get the order right. Not sure how you mess that up but they do. The owner is too cheap to accept American Express and based on the cleanliness of his restaurant too cheap to buy cleaning supplies. The restaurant was nearly empty tonight. We were waiting for 2 other people in our party and I had to ask for some chips and salsa. I was given a basket of about 5 chips. Needles to say we finished them off in 5 seconds. I went up and asked for 2 baskets so I wouldn't have to get up to refill their 5 chip baskets. Wait for this. The girl says she cannot give me more chips unless we order something. I said we are going to order as soon as the other members of our party arrive. UNBELIEVABLE! I told them they lost the businesses of 4 clients and that they always mess up our order. I am done with them and it's sad because their food is pretty dang good. Let's hope the owner sales the place one day and they actually care about their customer's.

Coming from Arizona I can't give this place an A-OK rating for "Mexican" food. The California burrito was overflowing with bland re-fried beans and chunks of potato (not deep fried tots like they do in Southern California). The tiny morsels of carne asada were covered in fat and had to be spit out to avoid a gag reflex. If you're looking for Utah's version of "authentic" mexican food you might as well go Rancheritos or Beto's and save yourself some $$$.

This was my second time to the restaurant. I was pleased the first visit as well as the second. This time I ordered #5 - the pork tamale and chile relleno. The chile relleno was great. Usually the chile is mush but this one was cooked just right, at least in my opinion. I would have preferred a tamale without meat, but their only option was pork, so thumbs down on the vegetarian options. One of our party ordered the torta de milanesa, but ended up with a torta con asada. They had run out of the breading (which is understandable as they probably don't use it for anything else) but the sandwich left him hungry as the meat was rather sparse. The service was fine, nothing spectacular. They're one of the places that gives you the receipt with the option to tip before you've even tried your food. The salsa bar is large and has a variety of condiments, though they had lemon slices instead of lime (?), weird. I think the first time I went they had lime. I think my favorite is the horchata. They have these big self serve barrels and it costs $1.99, just like the fountain drinks, however its a dollar for refills (for las aguas frescas); it's an on your honor policy. One critique, their menu is almost awkward to look at. Some of it is on the wall behind the counter while some is on the wall above the register. The menu above the register obstructs view of the rear menu (depending on your height I suppose). It's not a perfect experience, but I like it more than the Orem Gallo Giro (their service sucked; you have to wait on a server there). I would return.

I don't know how this place could even rate more than one star. Stick with Cafe Rio and pay the extra buck. Portions small, roasted vegetables dried out, black beans dried out. Signs on the soda machine to beware of sharing your drinks. Environment was smokey and room was stuffy. Probably trying save a dime on the air conditioning. And if you use American Exoress fagettaboutit. They don't take it. As in the owners own words, "I don't want to pay for your frequent flyer miles". Nothing like customer service!

El Gallo Giro is not the nicest looking of places outside, but inside it was nice enough, with a rustic look with southwest decorations throughout. $7 for three tacos and rice and beans was a great value by my book. The shredded beef was flavorful and tasty. The limonada was delicious! Chips and salsa were provided free of charge which was awesome. Salsa was a little sweet for my tastes but was decent. Overall first impression was positive.

This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Provo. The food and the atmosphere are very authentic feeling, and the service is good without overwhelming you. While there are so many options to choose from, I recommend the soft tacos with sweet pork! The tortas are also fantastic and huge! A few of my friends and I went for my birthday last year, and the cashier / waitress brought us out a plate of chimichanga's for free! The chimichanga's were even better than what we ordered. Perfect amount of crispy. The only thing not outstanding are the chips and salsa. The chips sort of taste bland and stale, while the salsa is more spicy than flavorful.

I try to stop by this place whenever I'm in the Happy Valley. It's a fantastic little restaurant with incredible food. Try the Los Bandidos pork burrito. Try the chilaquiles. Try everything. Sometimes, they give everybody desert for free. They want you to tip first, which is strange because I always want to leave more money after I've eaten, but I can't because I don't ever have cash. This review is not very good. Sorry. Go to El Gallo Giro!

  • Monique B.

This place has very authentic freshly made to order Mexican food. I loved it. The barbacoa is awesome. They have a salsa bar and freshly made fruit drinks. For soccer fans they have a big screen and always have the game going. A 3 sopa combo with beans, rice, chips, and drink was under $8. They have very friendly helpful servers. The ambiance us rustic and comfortable.

You don't go to El Gallo Giro for anything but their barbecued chicken. Note that its not BBQ chicken (as in smoked, southern style BBQ)--it's Mexican food. Amateurs get taco plates and give poor reviews. The people that know get the chicken. One thing to be aware of: the food at the State St Orem location isn't as good as at the Provo restaurant. Not sure why it's not more consistent.

Love Gallo Giro. My go-to mexican restaurant in Provo. I think this place absolutely trumps Cafe Rio, Costa Vida, Beto's, etc. The food tastes authentic, they have a salsa bar, and the atmosphere has a very local/relaxed feeling. I only wish they stopped playing soccer in spanish on the TV and showed ESPN.

I know Mexican food. I love Mexican food. I scoured Provo searching for the best Mexican food, and this is the place. Eat the Rock --it's a little bit of everything with cheese on top. I love it. For more than 2, the parilladas are essentially the same thing only bigger (an order for 4 fed 5 big guys with food to spare.

Saw some coupons (that should have been my first hint) for this place in the Value's pages that come in the mail. Told my wife we might as well try it for a free meal (buy one get one). I'm sorry to say that my experience here was "neither here nor there." It wasn't bad, it wasn't awesome. The BAD: * Chips and salsa were some of the worst I've had. Chips were GREASY, and I mean bad. Like, they're shiny. And after all that grease, they're still not good. * The salsa was basically red colored water with a couple bobbing veggies in there... some where. The two combined equals a disaster. The OK: * The tacos were fine, nothing wrong with them, but nothing particularly good either. Kinda bland. * Same with the beans; bland. So basically, why would I come back here? No real reason. If my buddy suggested it, I'd probably go along with it and be fine. To be fair, all I had was tacos. I'd be willing to try something else, sans chips and salsa, but probably ONLY on somebody else's dime. The only plus side to my visit was: now I know.

We eat here about once a week. The have consistently good food and service for a fast/casual restaurant. The owner is there about 80% of the times we have gone in. They specialize in traditional Mexican food, one of the only places I've eaten in Utah that uses nopales (cactus). I generally get the 1/2 chicken plate with the spicy seasoning. Lot of food for the $6.99 price tag.

I used to work up the street by the 7/11. We would eat here two to three times a week and we were never sick of it. I don't know who their food artist is but he is horrible. All the pictures of the food looks semi grosss, but don't let that scare you. It is all delicious. I love their pork burritos which is better than cafe rios and their tacos are great two. I usually order the number three which is a burrito and two soft tacos, and after eating here 60+ times I still love it. They seem to forget to what you ordered on occasion but they are quick to fix any problems. The servers and cooks are all very nice and enjoy you being there. This is also the prominent hangout of professor Kearl, an economics teacher at BYU

Good eats, fast and cheap. The salsa bar was a nice touch, and my Chile Relleno was mighty fine. Horchata and such costs extra, and I was on a budget, so I didn't spring for it. I bet it was tasty, though.

Went here based on fellow Yelp reviews. I got the pork barbacoas burrito and enchiladas verde. The enchiladas were quite good, the burrito was nothing special. I did love my husband's chile relleno! It was lightly breaded and you could really taste the pepper. Their salsa was full of cilantro like I like it but was a little watery. Very good value and decent food. I liked the way the inside was decorated with a lot of wood, it felt very cozy.

Another awesome place to eat in Provo. We got sent there by Lakeside Storage in Provo and love this place. The food is fresh and great. They have so many wonderful plates they serve it is always hard to decide which one to get. We eat there multiple times a week. Wonderful servers and clearly family run and operated! These people try hard and it shows!

This is by far the best authentic Mexican food in Utah County. I've been here about a dozen times or so over the last three years and I love it. Not your typical Mexican food menu as there are MANY unique items you can't get anywhere else. Tried "la parillada" over the weekend and for $28 is a feast for 5 very hungry adults. If you can't handle authentic food because you're used to Los Hermanos, you won't like this place. But if you've been to Mexico and know what real Mexican food tastes like, you won't be disappointed.

I ate at El Gallo Giro for the first time today. What an outstanding find! I couldn't believe the portion sizes given the low prices. Service was really good. My Chimichanga Changa was outstanding. I can't wait to go back.

Being from Mexico, the closest place for legit Mexican Food is LA... The food is ok, but at a great price which makes it worth it. The food is super grease and the salsas are ok. I'm not a regular and just go there when there is a big soccer game. So basically this is an ok place to go for Mexican food, not great and very grease.

  • Cody W.

I decided to try the place because the other reviews here were very good... I've got to say, I expected more. However, it must be said that the food was not bad... It had an authentic, "home-made" taste. I enjoyed the meal and would consider going back... perhaps for lunch next time. As for the price, dinner isn't anywhere near as good as the lunch specials. I went there for dinner and paid a dinner price. The $4.00 Obama menu looked fantastic, but it was unavailable. I ordered the smothered burrito and my friend, the sweet pork burrito. The smothered burrito ($5.75) can be had at Betos for about $3.00 and the quality and size is similar. The sweet pork burrito was a good value at $5.00 (came with a drink) but I'd take a Costa Vida sweet pork burrito over this one any day. I felt like the dinner menu was over priced for the "fast food" atmosphere. The biggest problem I have with the price is the cost of a beverage. $2.00 if it doesn't come with your meal. That made the grand total for my meal $7.75 + tax. That puts this meal in the price range higher quality restaurants. The chips and salsa were the biggest disappointment. The chips are made from flour tortillas. They are far too thick and mine spent a little too much time in the oil. The salsa is "OK", but the portion was a joke. Approx 1 oz. I guess I am biassed, cause the biggest reasons I like Mexican restaurants is for the fresh salsa and chips. If I wanted chips and salsa like this, I could go to taco bell. I was caught off guard by the language barrier. The hostess that took my order didn't seem to speak an ounce of english. I asked for a drink with my meal 5 or 6 times before she understood what I was saying. Akward and a bit embarrassing for both of us, I am sure. The pepper bar was second to none. 5 or 6 different kinds of sauces and garnishments. Chopped onions, cilantro, radishes, whole jalapeno peppers and much more. A+ for this. Bottom line, it's no better or worse than any other Mexican restaurant. The food sold here is comparable to Betos. My opinion? Go to Joe Banditos in Springville instead.

  • Ryan S.

I don't know who Mr. Joe is, but it seems that he has some unorthodox ideas about tacos. some may say that it goes against nature for beef and pork to intermingle inside the same tortilla under the cover of lettuce and cojita cheese and who knows what else. I say whatever floats your boat. Tacos Mr. Joe floats mine.

Hands down my favorite mexican place here in Provo. I am a bit of a little snob when it comes to mexican food, being from San Diego, and this is the closest thing to So Cal Mexican I have found here. Sure, it might be a little greasy, but... it's Mexican food!!! And its good!! Their Los Alamos tacos are my favorite. Fish tacos are hit or miss. Chile relleno is delicious. Tamales are delicious. And their salsa bar is awesome and serve it with fresh chips!

  • Nathan W.

The lunch special puts this one on my 5 star list. $4 bucks for a load of pretty damn good food. Salsas are fresh and good, the chips are fresh and on the thick side (but good), and the rice and beans and the rest of the food are very good. I would most definitely insist on trying the specialty drinks. They are a little steep compared to the food, but the cost is totally justified. The horchata, and especially the strawberry horchata is amazing. I've heard great things about the other drinks, and I know in the summer the watermelon juice is like drinking a watermelon, straight up. Amazing. And if they recognize your patronage they are usually cool about letting you have the drink for cheap or free or doing a refill to try new flavors. That is how business should be conducted, and that's why this place goes from 4 to 5 stars. Classic.

The two best things about this place are the smell of grilled meat cooking and banner outside advertising their $3.99 lunch specials by referencing the Obama stimulus plan. Clean, well-priced, friendly service. A big thumbs up!

My husband introduced me to this restaurant when we first began dating almost 4 years ago. Since then, we have been back many, many times. Sometimes 3 or 4 times a month. The owner of the restaurant came to know us. I judge every Mexican place by their quality of chips and their chips here are the best! My favorite place to go if I'm in the mood for tortilla chips and salsa. I also love to get their taquitos. I personally prefer the smaller taquitos vs the larger ones they make because I like my taquitos very crunchy. My husband gets the half chicken usually and that is always made perfectly! So tender and the flavor is phenomenal. We've also gotten the parillada many times and it is always a great go-to for when you have a large party. All in all, a fantastic restaurant and definitely the best Mexican food in town.

I've been meaning to try this place for awhile but I wasn't sure which Mexican restaurant to try first since most recommendations in Utah County have been awful. We were pleasantly surprised that El Gallo Giro is pretty good. Service is fast and friendly. Food is fresh and delicious. Warning: This place gets squished when it is busy. Don't bring a stroller or a car seat inside if you can help it.

"Hola amigos, this is the best Mexican restaurant of Provo," said Daniel. Daniel of all people would know, seeing that he's from Texas. You see, Texas is COVERED with Mexican restaurants. Most Texans have tried at least a dozen Mexican restaurants, so they know what's decent and what's a joke when it comes to this particular cuisine. Alright... alright, we get it! Listen: seriously though, I would recommend this place to anybody that would like to try decently priced Mexican food that's quite tasty. A friend and I ordered "The Rock" (see attached photo), which is a dish specifically designed for two people. It's basically a big cast iron bowl filled with all types of meats mixed together with cheeses, soups, and vegetables. With it you get tortillas, rices, and beans. Just to note, this restaurant is the type where you walk in and go to the counter to order your food, then afterwards sit down at a table and you're waited on for the rest of the time (for bringing your food, complimentary chips/salsa, and drink refills). So, I would recommend thinking about throwing in a tip when you pay up front!

Best Mexican food in Utah County that I've tried in a long time. In fact, I hadn't been to El Gallo Giro in a long time but they've improved a lot since my last visit. The fresh salsa bar and delicious "Aguas Frescas" bumped a 4 to a 5. Give it a try next time you're wandering Provo, UT

I love the salsa bar and the agua frescas that they always have - definitely the highlight of my visit each time. The student specials are a great deal, but I wish they were a little bigger and possibly included a burrito. I love that they have sopes on the menu though. Great food, great price, and always quick!

The flautas are incredible, the refried beans are incredible, and the mango fish tacos are incredible. For sure, this place is one of my favorites in Provo.

Excellent food, excellent atmosphere, and we will be back! We had the shrimp Diablo, seafood combo, and fresh guac. It was authentic and hefty portions. Highly recommend this restaurant, money well spent!

This place is great if you know what you're doing. A lot of the items are very authentic and their meat is fantastic. The rock is a great way to fill 2-4 people up, with fantastic presentation. Probably the best Mexican food in the area.

Oh my gosh this place is awesome. Freshly made guacamole made right in front of you. The family platter is huge, it fed 4 people plus 2 very full left over boxes. Shrimp were big and juicy. Chips and Tortillas appeared to be hand made.

  • Georgen E.

  • Sarah H.

    (5)

This is probably the best actual Mexican food that Provo has to offer. Its not as good as just north of the border but still yummy. Somewhat expensive though.

I won't taint the five star status for El Gallo Grillo. This place truely deserves the high rating. The grill is authentic Mexican and the atmosphere is like you just crossed the border. The fish tacos are excellent.

Would like to review this place on their food...but we didn't get a chance because we walked in 20 minutes before they were closing and told us "sorry we are closed". I said "I thought you closed at 9:30?" And she said "Yeah...but we already have our kitchen cleaned..." Wow!

The food here was good. I had the tacos de birria. The amount of food is pretty fair and the service was quick. For about 5.40, I got the two tacos, beans and rice. The ambiance is a bit strange but clean and comfortable.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
