Absolutely love this place. It's my favorite in Provo. I recommend The Oaxaca burrito with carne and veggies. Their salsa bar is awesome. Get file chips and try out the different types.

I liked the food and it didn't seem too expensive, I wish they would give more chips to eat and not limit it to a small baggy.. The rest was good. It took about 10 minutes to get the food

Carlos is a creative culinary genius, as well as an all-around nice guy. The daily specials may be a new look at an old favorite, or something completely unexpected but still delicious. The salsa bar, with its Cancun corn and black pepper-habanero-peach salsas, typically has ten to twelve different types; they go great with the homemade corn chips. Dishes are visually appealing, as well as down-right lovely to taste. If your idea of great Mexican food is Taco Bell you'll be surprised, but almost certainly in a good way. Seasonal specials, like his sweet corn tamales, are always something worth the trip.

My experience with El Azteca was less than spectacular. I have definitely had better mexican food. This seemed to be of betos quality and reminded me of such meals. I probably just tried the wrong things. I hope to have a better experience next time.

Great food, large portions, lively atmosphere and very inexpensive. Good for a date or family night. Recently added vegetarian options and a foot-long burrito. Definitely my favorite Mexican food in Utah.

El Azteca was the option for my family growing up in Orem. They used to have a place just south of campus up some old creaky stairs on the second floor of an older building. It was always the choice if we were going out for dinner. I loved it then and still do. The bean soup, salsas, and pretty much everything I have had is good. Would recommend to anyone.

The best things we ate were the chile rellenos, pineapple chipotle crema with chips, very fresh hard-shelled shredded beef tacos, and the crispy cheese tortilla appetizer. The cheese enchiladas with two different mole' sauces weren't even warm and the sweet taste was too strong. I miss the old cozy restaurant near where I lived. The cafeteria style is cold and rushed.

The two newest "specials" the cha cha cha (Pork chops) and the chicken tamale's were GREAT -- Hope they keep them on the menu-- Their salsa bar is a welcome freebie -- GREAT FOOD --

SOLID FOUR! I will be going back to get me my yummy mexican food!! I love sodium. I am sure that sodium will kill me but... its a death that i will welcome with great smiles, and if el azteca would like to assist me in that death, I would love it. Al Pastor Meat- delicious, i love pineapple with my al pastor... and they have it. It is juicy tender yummy happy, post death. Tortillas - made me a little sad, they werent great but not bad... im ultimately saying nothing, the tortillas were the only negative of my experience. Guac - get it. eat it. love it. (copyright alex) Beans and rice - kind of hard to mess these up, but you'd be surprised. The rice is soft not crunchy. All of their salsas are really good. I just put my pinky in every communal salsa pot... think about it. They appeal to a wide audience. And lastly it randomly comes with french fries. It fed two to fulfillment and we have leftover for probably two. And all of that for $10 children! THE VERDICT- You have to try it. If you like mexican food this is one of the better quick mexican food places in the region. The best news for all of you... you can pseudo kiss me by sticking your pinky in all of the sauces. You're welcome.

El Azteca has been my go-to quick Mexican food shop for a long time. Super good service, food, and tons of great specials and new items all the time! The owner is super innovative in their items. And their salsa bar is amazing! There's tons of different flavors and options. The crunchy chicken taco is a classic, and the California burrito is massive and so good. Definitely recommend!

Let's start with the cantaloupe punch. The word delectable comes to mind. The nachos are well-rounded and they give you a lot of them. Like a freak ton of them. I had read reviews about the nachos and thought, "Yeah, yeah, lots of nachos....There can't be more than I can eat." Well, there are. I'd even consider a half order for two people. Also, the decor is well done.

Fantastic new vegan menu. Delish! Potato taquitoes with mole sauce. We will be back!!

I've been a customer of El Azteca for 6 years, ever since they were in their tiny shack of a restaurant. The reason I've been a customer for this long is because this is some damn good Mexican food! Their food is fresh, flavors are great, portions are more than plenty for at least 2 meals, and the new restaurant has a festive and clean environment. One of my favorite things about this place is their extensive salsa bar! There is every flavor imaginable and their carrots are some of my favorite. The reason why I didn't give 5 stars is because I feel like the prices are a bit high; not unreasonable, but just not what I want to pay for a work lunch or quick bite to eat on the way home. I will definitely be a customer for years to come!

My wife and I love this place. For the price, this is as good as you can get in Provo! The salsas range from disgusting to odd and wonderful. It's very hipster, which makes the atmosphere novel for the first few times. Service is always quick, though the friendliness CAN leave something to be desired. Portions are pretty good size, and their horchata is solid, if you're into that sort of thing.

We stopped by El Azteca on a trip to visit family in Provo. Reasonably-priced, great portion sizes, and...Carlos! Fresh ingredients, great recipes, and the salsa bar...man, I could take the corn salsa intravenously. This place rivals our favorite taqueria here in San Francisco. Six of us had lunch for around $45 and we waddled out. My mom lives in Provo, and is giving up her beloved Cafe Rio for El Azteca.

I live in Orem but find myself in Provo a lot. I almost always stop at El Azteca. A few days ago the special was a combination plate with shredded pork taquitos covered with pork chile verde and cheese. Also served with lettuce, rice, beans, chips, and a drink. It was amazing and the best thing I've ever had there. I could only eat half. And I couldn't wait for dinner so I could taste those favors again. The salsa bar is awesome with many choices. Always check out the daily specials on the chalkboard sign. They are always great. My mouth is watering just thinking of lunch there. Try many items until you find the ones you love the most. Then you'll keep going back just like I do. The new location makes the experience even better.

This place is my go-to for Mexican food in Provo. The owner is very nice and all the other staff are very friendly. The salsa bar is the best around.

I love this place! I've from Utah to Arizona and often find myself missing their chicken nachos. Atmosphere is great, staff is friendly, service is fast and the food is good quality. Parking can be tricky particularly around lunch... but they do have a drive through. I visit here whenever I'm in town and suggest you do the same!

Okay, this was a pleasant surprise for sure. Was driving around with a friend when she suggested this place. On the surface, it looked a little divey; clean, but not exactly over the top in decor. There is a large xmas tree in the dining area; it is decorated with flowers for year around appeal... It is September... The menu is printed out, and taped to the lighter signs above the counter. They have some laminated ones too. Here is where it got strange... They have a ThiTamale dish as a special... The sauce is a curry based sauce. We took a leap and tried some of the specials. Chips were handed to us in two sandwich sized zip locks... And we took a number and found a seat. The salsa bar had many sauces; i like the pineapple one; they also have a lime coconut that is awesome. The food came, and wow... It was awesome! I very unique blend of flavors for sure, and not at all what you would expect for Mexican food. Normally, i may down grade the stars for the environment, but the food is great and the service is too. We will be back for sure; want to try the salmon tacos next time. Check it out, and try one of the specials.

I ate at El Azteca Mexican Taco Shop in Provo, UT during a trip to Salt Lake City to visit family. We were headed to Mt. Pleasant, a small town southeast of Provo, and were looking for a place to eat lunch on our drive down. My husband found El Azteca in the Happy Cow app, which is a resource for people to find vegetarian and vegan food. We are both dedicated ethical vegans, and our two children, ages 6 and 8, and vegetarians. Don't get me wrong. El Azteca is not a vegan, or vegetarian, restaurant. They serve a wide variety of animal flesh for carnivores. However, they have a VERY lengthy vegan menu, and you don't even have to ask for it. We walked in, and saw two menus - one traditional menu, and one vegan menu. As a vegan, it is very difficult to find an omnivorous restaurant that equally caters to vegans. The vast majority of the time, unless a restaurant is strictly veg, we are limited to a couple menu items, having to ask to hold the mayo/sour cream/cheese, making sure the rice wasn't cooked in chicken broth, and that the beans weren't cooked in lard. The food we ordered was delicious, and the portions were hearty. The host/cashier was very friendly, and identified as vegetarian. The ambience was casual, colorful, clean, and fun. There was a salsa bar with an extensive selection of salsas, from mild to hot. Prices were very reasonable. Even our omnivorous extended family members were satisfied with their animal-flesh-containing lunches. This was a GREAT and very surprising "find" in the town that is home to Brigham Young University. Next time we go to Salt Lake City, we will make a special trip to Provo, just for lunch.

I love this place! I was looking for a new Mexican place around, and I think this one will stick. The portions are huge, the food is quality, and the prices are very fair. Can't beat that. Menu has a lot of options ranging from cheap (~$5.50) to more expensive (around $14-15). I had the Acapulco burrito (rice, shrimp, beans, chipotle lime sauce, peppers) for about $8 and really enjoyed it. The combo came with tortilla chips and a fresh fruit salad made with oranges, apples, and pineapple. It was a fun place to eat - a nice compromise between a sit-down and fast food Mexican. It was packed at lunch today, which was my first sign that it was going to be good. UPDATE: My last few visits haven't been stellar and I've learned that you just have to know what to get. For example: Good: the smothered taquitos, tacos, rice pudding Not Great: the milanesa torta, the horchata (the first time I had it, it was spectacular; each time afterward, not so much. So sickly sweet it was unbearable.)

Delicious. Had the Baja fish taco and the carnitas pork. My friend has use nachos. Biggest plate of nachos I've ever seen. It could have fed a family of four. Highly recommend eating here.

An old standby in Provo, but in a new location up the street now. Worth a try, not the best Mexican fast food you'll get in this area, but they have some good menu items. It is usually very clean. And the service is good. The drive thru is pretty fast. I love to get the inside out tamale, with chicken and red sauce. I stick to the classic menu items...enchiladas, burritos, etc. I'm not a fan of their salads. Their mild salsa is very good. We often get a pint to take home.

This place was NOT good. Well, my grandpa ate my entire meal and enjoyed it. But my husband and I did not like it at all.

I really like El Azteca. My missing star isn't because of the food, and I feel bad leaving it one off, because I would like to give them a perfect rating. If they made a few updates, it would make all the difference in the world and I would happily add the last star. First of all, I found El Azteca on yelp, I was really happy with my fish tacos, I had the salmon and the tilapia and I had both styles and they were delicious. I saw other peoples plates who were having different things, burritos smothered, sides etc., and it all looked awesome. SO, okay, we've established that I think the food is perfection. I am such a fish taco junkie that I went two days in a row. The first night I went they had this GREAT kid working there; probably a Y student, but there were a few things really making his job much harder than necessary. They have these light up menus over head, but they have them covered in dark colored construction paper instead of printing the food options so you can see them. On top of the colored construction paper, there are one or two white pieces of paper with a terrible and confusing half explanation of what one or two combo options are... Then you have the fish taco menu on paper with two options tropicale or baja (?); both are awesome by the way, but the way it's written is also totally confusing and that menu makes another attempt at an explanation of a combo that is equally hard to understand. Anyway, he did a great job of trying to make sense of it for me, and he was so polite and accommodating, but ultimately, I really had no idea what I was ordering or how... not food-wise, but in terms of pricing and combining etc. Again, it was a lot cheaper the way he did it for us, so no complaints. The prices are totally great. The next issue I have is, the chips sitting in ziplock bags right in front of your face are really depressing. It's like, come on, keep them in the back and put them in a cute basket with some salsa or whatever to give your customers a little bit of a decent experience. A ziplock bag at a restaurant sucks. If they're to go, still leave them in the back. Other issues, so, the napkins are thin, the salsa bar is a mess, the forks and knives are somewhere else, the drink station is in another location, you cant find the trash bins. There is zero flow. There is nothing in terms of cohesion in your experience there, you're wondering all over the place to get what you need and then when you want to leave, you don't know what to throw away or where... The salsa bar has a whole DARK unused area behind it which looks like half the restaurant in closed or not in use, and again more unused overhead menus with more construction paper. Those unused menus are valuable real estate because here is the biggest kicker of all, until I saw people eating something other than what I ordered, I didn't even know they had a full menu! I only saw the two badly explained combo pages, and then the fish taco menu also confusing on a piece of paper. I thought fish tacos were all they sold. Apparently there is a full menu!!! I mean, I saw people eating from it... Super weird. So, day two, I go back and this time the owner is working there, first of all, its the middle of the day and they looked closed from the outside. They need to turn on the lights, its never good having a business that looks closed... So, I go in and the owner was civil enough to us, but SERIOUSLY lacked enthusiasm for his own business, he seemed really bored and not particularly happy to be there. One customer asked him about his new location and how things were going, she was just trying to be supportive and he was like "well, it's four times the rent here..." Come on; that was such a downer. He just seemed so depressed, People in food service here in Utah are usually very happy and service oriented, so while he was perfectly nice, he just didn't seem to care much. Anyway, this is way more than I planned on saying. This place just needs to really tighten up the ship and it will be awesome. Still, I have to say I recommend it because the food is REALLY GOOD.

I had the Carne Asada chimichanga and my wife had a chicken quesadilla. Bothe weren't any good and not close to authentic Mexican. All the food was overly sweet, including their "spicy" pink sauce. I will not be returning.

  • Anthony B.

Service was awesome everyone was very nice and helpful. The mole special the chicken was pretty dry. The bean and cheeses burrito was ok. The flan was over cooked and gritty because the Carmel sauce crystalized it was also to sweet. the horchata was way to sweet as well. The plate design was pretty cool and refreshing a fun and different way to plate a classic. I think it's a family run place and like I said they were extremely nice and went over the top to be helpful and give great service it's the main reason I wrote the review. I may try it one more time to see if I could find something good.

I've eaten here twice now. The food is way too sweet. I always feel blugh after eating here. Chips are served in ziploc bags. They kept checking on us which made it feel like they wanted tips for serving fast food. It was okay but nothing special, go to costa vida just around the corner and you'll be glad you did.

After two poor experiences in the old location, I did not think I would ever go back, but my wife's friend told us we really had to go and try it again. We were a bit hesitant, but decided to give it a shot and are we glad we did. The food is always excellent. We have tried many things on the menu, from the potato taquitos to the salmon tacos, the nachos, and many others, and have never been disappointed. I love the inside out tamales. They are always perfect. The nachos always fill both of us up with some to take home. The salsa bar offers good variety (Chile De Arbol is my absolute favorite). We enjoy the atmosphere and the service has always been friendly (Carlos is the best), but the real reason we keep going back is the food. Just writing this makes me want to run out for something tasty.

This was a really good taco. I am a big fan of Taco Tuesday and so when my vegan friend invited me to try a new place I was more than down. The only things I disliked are that it was messy, (which is more a preference not necessarily negative) it had all the guac on one side, (so it wasn't spread) and it was more expensive Rubios. The good things are the guac was included without extra pricing. That's a big thing at these Mexican joints. The seafood was excellent. I got Shrimp taco. With Cilantro lime and it was really tasty. I also got the Beer battered fish and it was also really good. I will most definitely come back. I won't get Pico though. Because I just don't like big hunks of salsa. Very good.

  • Thomas P.

If you like Mexican food, this is probably not the place to go. If you like Taco Bell or Del Taco, this is the place for you. Food is average and Americanized. Not horrible, but not great. I have eaten here 3-4 times as both the old and new location are 1-2 blocks from my apartment, but have failed to ever be impressed. My advice: skip it and go somewhere else.

  • Pdog E.

I had their nachos and they were pretty good. Big serving too. What stood out the most were all the many different types of salsas and sauces available for self serve. Probably half or more of them had a sweet and spicy flavor. Most were enjoyable and interesting to try. Beautiful Aztec art and paintings to enjoy as well.

A high three. I do love their chimis. Today I had their guava enchilada with their cantaloupe juice and mild salsa--all that combined gave me a sugar headache. Still pretty good.

  • Russell M.

Lots of yummy vegan options. I was told they will soon have a separate vegan menu but they were happy to explain what can be made vegan on the current menu. I had. "BYU Bowl" with spicy tofu and an inside out tamale. Both items plus the salsa bar were amazing. Worth the drive to happy valley. I will return.

I have been looking for a good Mexican restaurant. This was not it. I ordered the fajita steak burrito and was not impressed with the meat, I had to eat around it. But overall good service and the place was neat and clean.

    1. Mexican flavors without any of the excitment usually found in places like this. 2. 15 full minutes in the drive through! AND I was the ONLY one in line. 3. I asked for no beans (allergic) AND THEY GAVE ME BEANS. pretty much... I am not going there again. ... don't bother.

Rarely disappointed. They've been around for a long time for a good reason. Give the fish tacos a try. The only thing I haven't liked is the mole.

My favorite Mexican place in Provo-- good food ( yummy burritos, tacos & salsas), decent prices & quick service. And every time I've been here, the people were always nice. Definitely beats Beto's, Taco Bell & Del Taco, by a LONG shot.

I live in Salt Lake, but have been known to drive to Provo for El Azteca's crispy chicken tacos. Recently, though, I tried their salmon tacos, and now I am seriously in trouble! We have some great Mexican food in Salt Lake, but nothing quite like El Azteca. I can only hope that they expand to Salt Lake City ... soon!

  • Amanda H.

Tied with Cafe Rio, El Azteca was my favorite place to grab a quick bite to eat while in college. Which is why I'm so surprised to be writing the first review! This place is beloved by Provo residents. The kids from Provo High often cross the street during lunch or after school to grab some excellent Mexican food, and BYU students can be found here throughout the day. I never tired of it the five years I lived in Provo, and it's location inspired me to live in the Windsor Park Condos, just behind it. Seriously. Condos a stone's throw from El Az? Where do I sign? My standard order was a bean and cheese burrito with mild salsa and a Guarana - in the green can. The yellow can isn't as good - it's manufactured in New Jersey. The green can is imported from Brazil. Ah, Guarana. How I miss you... Also not to be missed are the beef soft tacos, fish tacos and the nachos. The nachos are spectacular. But I would only order them if you're eating there. They get soggy pretty quickly and need to be eaten fast - not good for take out. Conveniently, there's a drive through if you're really on the go. Service isn't taco-bell fast, but it's close, considering the food is prepared once you order it. I should mention that the meat is quality here. Most Mexican restaurants have good food but you're constantly spitting out the gristly meat. Not the case here. This is also the reason why I would order food from El Az and then meet friends who went to Beto's. That place is vile.

  • James F.

If you want good-tasting Tex-Mex style Mexican food in large quantities at good prices, this is the place to eat. Not much ambience (used to be a fast food place of some kind). Not great eats, but good.

    (3)
  • Angela D.

Their fresh salsa is really good and I like that they have a good variety of flavors. The portion sizes are HUGE and for the amount of food you're getting, it's definitely worth the price. My complaints are that the chips were stale, so that was disappointing. If you go, tell them to go easy on the onions. The amount of onions in my burrito was ridiculous. In one burrito, I pulled out 1.5 cups of onions.

  • Erik M.

On a street full of strip malls and slick new fast food franchises, this dive is a gem. The building predates everything around it but Provo High School across the street. Sitting here enjoying the generous portions (biggest damn burritto I've ever had), all I see is local workers streaming in. I don't live here so when I look for food, I follow the local cops, postman, utility works to see where they eat. This is the place if you like authentic Mexican.

  • Carina H.

My absolute favorite Mexican food in Provo. This is down-home, authentic, Mexican comfort food at its best. You can order just about anything from the menu and be satisfied. And, it's one of Provo's best kept secrets, known and loved by locals. You can't go wrong with the two taco combo, the rice and beans are to die for delicious. The prices are great for the volume of food you get. Not to mention, that when I make homemade salsa, I specifically take a trip to El Azteca for a bag of their house tortilla chips. You can eat in their small dining area, which is usually clean and kid-friendly, or grab your food to go. Why anyone in their right mind would choose Taco Bell or Del Taco, both a few buildings down, over the awesome that is El Azteca, is beyond me. They'd have to be locos. Don't miss El Azteca.

  • Nathan T.

I wouldn't go back. One time was enough for me. Yeah sure they checked with us often and made sure that we were getting everything we needed but man after 6 times in one sitting was a little too much for me. It felt more like an interruption. The food was alright but nothing special or worth going back for.

  • Katrina B.

Okay, so I have been going to the Orem location of El Azteca my entire life and I love love love it. This was my first time trying the Provo location. Their new location is really nice and big and it's got a great atmosphere. Their new menu though, confused me a lot. I usually would just get a chicken chimichanga. But here you'd have to get a burrito with beans rice and cheese for 6 dollars, and make it chimi style for an additional dollar. I just thought it was more confusing than it needed to be. Now the chimichanga was slightly bigger, but it did not compare in taste. It was good, but it wasn't great. Also it ended up being more expensive for what I would normally get. So all in all, I would probably go out of my way to the Orem location for my favorite chicken chimichanga than go here again.

Sugar sugar sugar! If you love SUPER sweet and over sugared food then you will love this place... My family went there for lunch and we ordered a sweet pork quesadilla and other items. My husband LOVES sweet pork and this pork was just TOO SWEET. He said, "it is beyond sugary, not good and just old tasting!" This was super disappointing! I had the jicama slaw and it as well WAS TOO SWEET!!!! I love slaws. This was NOT a slaw it was jicama smothered in sugar sauce. We will not be returning.

The chips and salsa are good. There's lots of salsa options to try which is good but the rest of the food is just bland and boring. I know good mexican food and this just isn't good.

Best Mexican food I have ever had. I live in Arizona, so I know good Mexican food when I see (err..taste it). Carlos, the owner, is friendly and gets to know his regulars. I went here once a week while in college and now every time I am in Utah I make sure and visit. You can't go wrong with this place.

On par with Taco Bell. Very disappointing, since "way back in the olden days", in its original location, it was good " Americanized Mexican" food.

Nice little place along Bulldog Blvd. I ordered a fish taco and shared a chimichanga with my wife. The taco was $2.50 and the chimmy was about $7. A little pricey in my opinion but the quality was terrific. I'll be back.

A little part of me feels sheepish giving five stars to a drive-thru Mexican place, because in my experience they get most of their business after last-call hits the local bars and the food is reflective of that. But not this place. The food is impressively authentic, and SUPER varied! It's about the quality I expect from a sit-down restaurant, with a pleasantly surprising twist. Example: one of their sides is a cactus salad. Other example: one of their newest additions is a grilled shrimp salad, complete with a healthful compliment of fruits and veggies. They also have a rotating daily flavor of agua fresca in addition to the regular horchata, which to me is a huge bonus. Seriously, every time I go here I'm pleased, and I've never ordered the same thing twice. Give it a try! PS: I recently saw that they've started serving all-day breakfast items, including horchata french toast with fresh berries. Um, yum?

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization.
