We had the filet special. Cooked perfectly and very tender with an amazing black cherry , cabernet reduction and parmesan mashed potatoes. Ended meal with a cactus pear cheesecake. Will definitely return when visiting Provo again.

I love black sheep. I get the pozole. It's very tasty and filling. It is a bit on the pricy side. I would recommend call ahead seating. It does get busy around meal times.

Awesome awesome awesome. If you are in a hurry you may want to find another place but if you enjoy food this place is great. Had the chimirelleno and it was great. Get a mexicoke or mint ice tea and you can't lose.

Food was delicious, but I had to sell a kidney to afford it. I had the lemonade, shared one of the burgers, and shared the hog jowl tacos. It was all very good. I'll look into getting a bank loan so I can try out some other items. Also, our hostess and server were great!

If you can block out the unmistakable taste of genocide that comes with every "Navajo taco," you will enjoy some genuinely tasty food at Black Sheep. Definitely order the prickly pear lemonade to wash down your cultural guilt.

Their posole is to die for, but everything I've tried here is amazing! I wish there were a location in SLC!

Food was good... Place was nice... Service was a little snobby... My wife can ask for no tomatoes without getting told no or that the chef designed the food with that in it.

Cute place. The quail was okay and the sweet potato fries were very greasy. I got the cactus berry mojito, which tasted okay but was extremely watered down and $15. Service was also okay. Also, their menu is dominated by pork. Very few items don't have it, and they make no substitutions. We don't eat pork, so the menu was very limited, but if you like pork, it may be better. For us, it was just "okay."

Had the squash soup. It was great! The kids menu is better than most places regular food.

What a pleasant surprise! We are spoiled by the amazing restaurants in Minneapolis now but this was top notch. We ate here for dinner last night for the first time. Our friend recommended the place and we loved it. We went there for dinner and the place was busy on a Thursday night. I would recommend making a reservation ahead of time. Fortunately we waited around and we were able to get a table faster than they originally quoted us. The service was excellent and our server was very knowledgable about the menu. I ordered the enchiladas and they were fantastic. The flavors blended well and were very deliberate. I usually do not like red enchilada sauce but this was different. My husband got the hog jowl tacos and I enjoyed the one bite I tried but he states he wouldn't order them again. My friend ordered the special Chilean Sea Bass and it was to die for. If that is available next time I go, I will definitely be ordering that. Many people recommend the sweet potato fries and I agree they were tasty. For dessert I enjoyed their cactus pear cheesecake. This restaurant is now on my must visit place when we come back to Utah to visit.

I've been to Black Sheep Cafe multiple times and it's always delicious. The Bleu burger and the hog jowl tacos melt in your mouth. Extremely flavorful. I'm so glad there's such a great restaurant here in downtown provo.

It was so delicious! I was apprehensive because the prices were pretty high, and the food seemed simple, but it was actually amazing. We were both completely satisfied and I even had leftovers (which I don't expect at all in these sorts of restaurants. I got a navajo taco, I can't remember what my husband got, but it was amazing as well. We got the chocolate mousse for dessert, I am not a big sweets person and I loved it. I can't wait to visit again!

Black Sheep Cafe is our favorite restaurant in Utah County! If we could we would go once a week!! Favorites: Goat burger, sweet potato fries, Black Sheep Burger, HOG JOWL TACOS! If you want to read more read my review: honeytastethis.wordpress…

black sheep is amazing. the food is fresh and familiar with a southwestern twist that won't leave anyone out in the cold. the cactus pear lemonade is refreshing. the green chili stew is perfectly cooked and the red beef Navajo taco was to die for. out server was happy and helpful. she didn't rush us and we never wanted for anything. this is our new go to place in Provo.

I'm torn with BSC. I really REALLY wanted to love it, but it turned out to be a hipster-foodie place. I ordered the Navajo taco trio, which I really enjoyed. My husband ordered the Goat Cheese burger, and it wasn't impressive. It lacked flavor and GOAT CHEESE! When we asked if they forgot it, we were told that the cheese was cooked into the meat. We didn't order drinks or appetizers and our waiter seemed to take it personally and scoffed. It was decent, but turned out to be an overpriced hipster joint.

I have lived in Happy Valley my entire life (36 years) and I can say that this is probably the BEST food I have savored in the county by far! My wife and I visited the restaurant for the first time last night and I can say with complete confidence that we will be back. In fact, I think we will be back next week for our anniversary! When we arrived we first noticed that is was a smaller place. We kind of enjoyed that because it creates a cozy ambiance that lets us actually have a conversation during our meal. Service was superb. Our waiter (Matt) was not only knowledgeable about the menu, but he had some great suggestions for wine! I love that the restaurant serves alcohol. Although the drink menu is limited, it is adequate and a nice bonus. Now for the food, all I can say is HOLY $%*#!!!!!!! Fresh food at it's finest! I had the Red Chili Pork Chimi and the wife had the Red Chili Pork Navajo Taco. Although both dishes had the Red Chili Pork they both had their own unique flavor. The tortilla on the chimi was flavorful yet not greasy. The fry bread for the Navajo taco was crisp and bursting with unique flavor. Both dishes were obviously fresh made and fantastic. The portions were big but not huge. We both took home leftovers for lunch tomorrow. We didn't get a chance to try the desert, but they sounded fantastic! Bottom line, we will be back again and again. I have read other reviews that said that the service in pretty slow. Not this time! The restaurant was almost full and we waited about 15-20 minutes for our entrees. Not bad at all for a Saturday night. I really hope that this restaurant stays around for a long time and is able to keep this level of quality. It's a great addition to the bland competition in the valley!!

Amazing loved the blue polenta and shrimp!!! Couldn't get enough of the blue burger. Absolutely unique and delicious. Please please please put burgers on the dinner menu. That's what people want.

I went here with a friend tonight and we both loved it. The food was fantastic, the music/ambiance was great, (on Saturdays they do a silver smiting class) and the service was prompt and polite. I got the Goat Burger with sweet potato fries, my friend got the Navajo Taco and both were amazing. My only gripe was that it was COLD in there so be sure to bring a sweater.

I'm going to be honest...I wanted so badly to like it but I just couldn't bring myself to it. Like, I liked it but I didn't like it as much as I hope to...you know? The Navajo Taco was great, the Black Sheep burger was lacking, and the soda was flat. Ha. The interior was really pretty, though! ...and it was just a tidge pricey. There. I said it.

There's nothing bad here. For realsies. I mean maybe the one thing that could improve it is if it was a little bit less in Provo, but it's worth the trip. (That was in no way a bag on Provo. I love me some Provo. I just don't happen to live nearby.) The pork chop sandwich is one of my favorite things to eat, ever. I get it every time. I just have a really hard time deciding if I should get the corn or the sweet potato fries with it. The corn is mind blowingly good, so it's a temptation for sure, but sometimes humans just need starch. And fried. Go eat here. It will change your life.

This was a near perfect dining experience, and I believe with time the minor kinks will be worked out. We ordered the Black Sheep burger and the Navajo taco sampler with a mini size of each of three favors. My husband said the burger was outstanding, and they cook their burgers to medium which I'm sure contributed to his rave review. I really liked my food as well, especially because I was able to order my little fry breads SPICY. They were all really fresh and flavorful, though my least favorite was the one with pinto beans (don't recall the name). I ended up leaving that one just because compared to the other two it didn't taste like much. The others were a green chile pork and a red chile braised beef---sooo tasty. His burger and fries were $9, and my Navajo tacos were $15. Our only small complaints were the awkwardness of the service at some points, and also the sweet potato fries were soggy and oily rather than crisp (lukewarm fryer?). We didn't care enough about these things enough to where it was in any way a negative experience, however. I liked the atmosphere okay though not as much as some reviewers. Could have more of am upscale feel. One really cool feature is the silversmith making beautiful turquoise jewelry in an adjoining space-- he was awesome and you can even pick out your own stones and have custom made pieces! I will for sure be back to do that. *We went back again this weekend and ordered the fries "crispy," which made a world of difference. Not sure why anyone wouldn't want their fries crispy, but just a tip.

Fabulous food. Delicious ethnic home cooking. Three of us ordered something different and every dish was wonderful. Very much worth the price-- which I do not consider high. Am very surprised by one in our party (a local) who did--i guess they expect it to be cheap like "taco" joints, just because if its roots?

I always felt like there was something missing from the world, but now I've found it: a Navajo Taco restaurant. You know those things you always see at fairs and carnivals: a scone with chili and some tomatoes and cheese. These aren't like those. These are soft chile verde pork lovingly blanketed over a scone like thing called "fry bread". I asked for medium spicy, and it was good. Sure, for the price I would have liked a larger portion, but then again, I've never eaten a Navajo Taco and thought "well, that portion was adequate." The place was clean, the servers friendly, and everyone liked their food. It was a winner, and it mended a rift in the fabric of space.

This place sucked. Disappointed after reading so many great reviews. Don't get me wrong, it was okay food, just not spectacular. I will not go here again.

  • Debra A.

I was really excited about Black Sheep from the reviews I heard but was disappointed after eating here twice. It was good, but overpriced. The meat in my posole was grisly. The second time I came, I ordered Navajo tacos and loved them, but not for what I paid. Unfortunately, Black Sheep is more about show than food - they have some great items on their menu but it doesn't merit its price range. That being said, the service was great and the lemonade was delicious.

I've been wanting to try this restaurant for a while now because of the reviews it received. We called ahead because we were traveling from Salt Lake. The hostess said they only take reservations for large parties but she said to come down because there was not a wait. So we decided to bust a journey and give it a go. We walked into a 1/2 full dining room and turned our name in. Because of the lack of people, I assumed it would be only a short time. After staring at empty tables we decided to ask the nice but totally clueless hostess how much longer we would have to wait. She replied that she didn't know because there was a party of 22 that had reservations. 22! I'm pretty sure that the whole place couldn't seat 22! I don't know if it's such poor management or the dumb girl that pretends to be hostess but I do know that no meal is worth being treated like that! DO NOT waste your time! They should accept all reservations or non at all!i had to put a rating or it would be negative stars.

Great food. Prices are a bit steep, just under $20 an entree, but worth it for fine dining. We got the buffalo burger and the Navajo taco tapas. Both were tasty. The rosemary fries and fry sauce that came with the burger were very good. Flavor popped and fries were crisp. The burger was also good, but nothing amazing. It was interesting that it had a bit of caramelized sauce on the bottom of the bun that added some pazaz. The tapas themselves were excellent. The meat was flowing with flavor and tender. The rice and beans on the side left something wanting and seemed pretty average. We also got some prickly pear lemonade, which was OK, nothing amazing.

Well, once again I trusted fellow Yelper's when selecting a dinner location while in Provo. My party of three was very impressed with Black Sheep. The beer selection was limited, but great flavor in the few options. They have no bar area for waiting guest. I have to agree with the Goat Burger and the Trio Taco's. The dinner time is from 5-9pm. Also, make a reservation if you can. We were very lucky in getting a table. Enjoy your time at Black Sheep Cafe.

This is my first trip to Provo and I'm still figuring places out, but I've definitely found two restaurants worth visiting again. Black Sheep Cafe is one. I had an awesome meal served in a cute, causal place with fantastic prices. The Black Sheep burger was outstanding; the bread for the burgers is made at BSC and it's wonderfully compliments the burger. I opted for the street corn (fancied up corn on the cob...not corn with refuse found in the gutter) and a side of grilled asparagus, which had amazing flavor (maybe a tad too much oil). The salads and tacos all sounded worthy of trying and if I am back in Provo, I will be getting me some of those!

GREAT FOOD!! The black sheep cafe is a great little place, with really great food however, there are some things to know, before you go. 1-Be sure to make a reservation, Especially on the weekends. If you dont, you will not get in to eat. 2-Be sure to plan out a good chunk of time to eat. Because they make their food from scratch, and that they are so busy, it can take a little longer than usual to get seated, and also your food. Overall, this place is awesome...Its different, unique, and delicious. if i could I would give it 4.5.. I highly recommend eating here.

I have family that goes generations back in Ramah, NM which borders the Navajo Indian reservation and have enjoyed our fair share of Navajo tacos, so we were thrilled when Black Sheep opened here. The jewelry shop is incredible with gorgeous turquoise pieces. But the food, oh the food... Everything we had was incredible. The navajo taco is the best I've ever had, the sweet potato fries are divine, even the corn on the cob was exceptional. I ordered a kid's burrito for my 15 month old and even that was fabulous. The beans were fresh, the cheese was high quality, and the tortilla obviously handmade. He devoured the whole thing. You might wait a little bit for your food, but once it comes out it's obvious that they are taking their time making it as you order it. Sadly I don't live in Utah anymore or I would be frequenting this place at least weekly. Get out of your burger/pizza/Cafe Rio rut and try something fantastically unique!

Black Sheep Cafe was a little surprise tucked away on University Avenue. I got the Navajo taco and it was something to rave about. My only complaint was that it was so fresh and hot by the time I got it the lettuce was a tad wilty for me. These guys have a good thing going, and it's nice to get something different in Provo! Also, fantastic service.

We decided to go to Black Sheep Cafe for our wedding anniversary. It's not a formal place by any means, but has a really cool atmosphere and a unique menu. The service we had was outstanding - probably the best service I've had in as long as I can remember. Our server, Gibson, was sincere, aware, and attentive. The food is truly amazing. My husband - pretty hard to please - really liked the pork chop sandwich and I went once again with the goat burger. The place really offers some cool ambiance to the growing and evolving 'cool' culture of Provo. Their high Yelp ratings are definitely accurate.

I went to lunch at this place after they catered a party I went to. Both times the food blew my mind. For the party they served Green Chile Stew accompanied by Nanniskadii for the main course and then Orange-Habanero Creme-Brulee for dessert. Dear merciful heavens, I have dreamed of that creme brulee every day since then. JUST SO GOOD. For lunch I got a Green Chile Pork Navajo taco. I love Navajo tacos and always get one at street fairs or farmers markets or whatever. But this Navajo taco was unlike anything I have ever experienced. I can't even...just go get one. And bring me. I love that this is a locally owned family-run business. The ambiance is fantastic. It's pretty popular, so you probably will have a wait, but it is worth it.

This place is awesome! I have loved everything I've tried. I loved the Navajo taco and I believe it's called the blue cheese taco. Great flavors and this place is original. My only dislike is getting a decent parking spot. :-)

Very good lunch. Had burger wrapped in a naan-like bread, and a pinto taco. Very good for the area.

Goat burger was great, and the Navajo tacos at the table next to us looked really good also. Went again a few months later, and I had the chimichanga, the sauce and whole dish was great. I highly recommend it.

I've had lunch here a couple of times. All in all its a great place to go. Our server said, up front, that everything is made to order and would take a little time... This is a slight understatement, it seemed like we were waiting forever for our food. When it did arrive, I would have to say that it was great. I had their Black Sheep burger which was served on their signature flat bread. I ordered the sweet potato fries with my burger based on the review from others and all I can say is that they were not my favorite. A week later I went and had to try the Navajo taco. I guess it's not normally on the menu but they were serving their special chili and it was available taco style so I couldn't pass it up. Their chili Navajo taco is awesome. For anyone who's not had one, you've got to try it. Good job Black Sheep.

Small and modern restaurant with freshly made food. Waitress was fantastic and very attentive, checked on everything we ordered to ensure satisfaction (without being overbearing). The fry bread was amazing and the honey butter dipping sauce was perfection. Tried both bruschettas, personally preferred the sun dried tomato topped one, which has a great flavor combination with the hummus. The enchiladas were unique and balanced. The chocolate mousse was light yet flavorful. Would recommend to anyone looking for a unique Mexican food restaurant.

I stopped by here for lunch with family and it was tasty. The sweet potato fries are amazing, really good (they are as good if not better than Gurus across the street). I had a blue bacon burger and asked if they could go easy on the blue cheese which they did. My brother had the burger with goat cheese. He likes goat cheese and said it wasn't a strong goat cheese. The burgers are served wrapped in flat bread. We ran into a friend of my brother's and he raved about it and suggested the pork chop sandwich. For parking, you can park in the parking garage behind the building and come in the back door. The service was on the slow side -- I wouldn't stop by if I were in a hurry. However, I will be coming back -- it is tasty.

Tried to get in this place twice for dinner. Figured it out, the key is go early! Wife and I went as they opened up for dinner, met by a very friendly and helpful staff. We ordered the blue shrimp and cactus lemonade which could have been enough for a stunningly good eating experience! We were told the main dishes would take more than the "normal eatery" waiting time, but the wait was not bad at all. My Navaho Taco was the best I have had since I ate one on the Rez in northern AZ, maybe even better. My wife's Buffalo Prime Rib was fantastic! I have nothing but superlatives to say about this fine eating establishment. Plan to make it a regular visit as we attempt to cover the complete menu, what a taste fest!! GT F.

I served an LDS mission on the Navajo reservation, so I was really excited to see this place open. One of my old companions and I came to see how the Navajo tacos compared to those made by the little old ladies of the rez. They are quite different, but absolutely delicious. Very gourmet. You can't go wrong with a Navajo taco here. The burgers are great as well. I can never decide what to order, because I love it all. The cactus pear lemonade is worth trying as well. Make sure you call ahead for a reservation, or you may not get a seat.

Fries are delicious! Burgers come on thick flour tortillas which taste great and make them unique.

  • David K.

Very tasty food. The Navajo tacos were very flavorful - and the 3-type sampler was way more than enough for a single portion. Others in our group really liked the pork chop sandwich and the goat burger. The only drawback was VERY slow service tonight. It was a little busy on a Friday evening, but we felt neglected and had to wait a long time for our food. It almost made us late for the play we were going to see. We'll be back and hope for a better experience next time!

  • Scot C.

The hog jowl tacos are still amazing and a must order item, my second favorite menu item is the green chili stew ! I still see a lot of Navajo tacos being ordered which are good but one of the last things I would personally order but many people obviously like them.

    (4)
  • Scott E.

Anyone who lives in Utah county ought to drop in....the environment is beautiful, our service was friendly, and the food was served warm and delicious. The dishes we ordered that we loved were the goat burger (big burger with goat cheese on flatbread instead of a bun), the red chile beef Navajo taco, and the chimichanga. It is definitely not a cheap meal but the food was worth it.

  • David W.

Great food. Took my family of 6. 4 kids from 14 to 3 and they auto added a 20% tip after the tax was added? Because we where a party of 6. Service and food where excellent. I will never go back no matter how good the food when I'm charged mandatory tips. I would have left the same or more now they have lost a customer. If they change there policy im in we all enjoyed the food!

  • Abish B.

Food was great but after being on time to our reservations at 6:30 and getting our food at 7:30 then taking an extra 45min to get our check, I don't think it's worth it unless you plan on a 2 and a half hour dinner on a Monday night.

The owners are so arrogant that it makes eating here a miserable experience. The food is good, not great, but I have never in my life been treated so poorly in any busness. It was a terrible dining experience.

  • Allan M.

I'm only giving two stars for the food, it's delicious don't get me wrong. Except for the sweet potato fries they are lacking starch. But lets talk about how slow everything is in the restaurant. Now I am all for the slow food movement and cooking with love but there has got to be some serious love going on in the kitchen to be taking as long as it did. Food was not coursed out at all. Absolutely everything was delayed, even up to our checks being ran out, and our cards being ran. Almost to the point where our anxiety started flipping tables. There were a total of 6 tables occupied in the restaurant in the time we were there. I serve. There is NO WAY it should take that long. I was able to write this WHOLE review while waiting for our server to swipe our card... Expect to wait for you food, it's been 2 and a half hours. Since we walked in the door. This isn't Forage or Eleven Madison Park. There were not 6 courses.

I came here for dinner with my husband and two friends and I am a fan! We were greeted with a pleasant host, seated immediately, and our server was happy and informative. It took us a bit longer than expected to get our food, I'm assuming because it's all made right then and there. Once the food came out, I was more than happy to have waited the time we did.

  • Angela B.

Save yourself the wait and go somewhere else. My husband and I had their highly talked of Navajo Tacos. The meat was bland and had disgusting amounts of fat in it. The scone was alright, but nothing worth the price. Honestly, you'd find a better Navajo taco at a state fair than at Black Sheep Cafe. The sweet potato fries were also slightly raw. Plus we both had a wicked case of food poisoning after our less than satisfactory visit. My suggestion, stay away. You'll thank me later.

I love this place! I normally HATE Navajo tacos and the waitress convinced me to try the it...it's the best thing I have ever had! I love both the red and green tacos and can't decide which is better! Make sure to make a reservation though...it's a busy place! Also, every waiter and employee that we encountered here were fantastic! very warm and attentive to our needs without hovering. One of the bus boys is also great (Mat??) and really helped us out one time by squeezing a group of 4 in on a saturday night. Thanks!

The food was excellent, waiter was awesome and attentive, dessert was amazing! I would go back again just for the citrus habanero creme brûlée! Definitively going to go back again!!!

The "Goat" Burger at this place is exceptional. Hand-pressed beef with goat cheese in the middle topped by a sliced portabello mushroom, sauteed peppers and a very tasty sauce - all wrapped in a Navajo taco-type bread. Pricey but amazing. The burger was cooked and seasoned perfectly, very moist and very delicious. I thought the sweet potato fries were just okay. There was no crispness to them at all and they seemed more like fried potatoes than french fries. They also got a little sweet for me by the end, but the dipping sauce they were served with was very nice. Regardless of the fries' shortcomings, the burger alone makes it well worth a visit.

  • Chris H.

The food was ok. Navajo taco was ok, but lacking in flavor.but I am all about service, when the service is bad it affects the meal. The waitress was horrible, we came in for a late lunch and had to wait 45 minutes just to get our food. What was worst is all the tables around us that where seated far after us received their food before us. Also it was pricey for what you get.

Black Sheep Cafe is a bit like love. You could spend all of your days searching for it not knowing exactly what you are looking for. Then someday you could try it out, maybe because you passed it by one day and thought it was a pretty attractive place or because a friend mentioned how much they think you might enjoy yourself there. "Hey, why not?" you might think and arrange to test it out on a Friday evening, even calling ahead of time to make a reservation. You'll stroll in, eager to try it out and be greeted with a smile. You may then quickly check the place out to find that it looks great, done up well without trying too hard. Looking good, smelling good, it will pass the quick physical inspection, but hey, looks aren't everything, right? So you will sit down and delve into the nitty gritty of what makes this restaurant tick, the menu. On paper the food all looks really good but that's the way it is at every restaurant you've tried before. At first taste this restaurant will hook you, whether it's from the fry bread that's warm and fluffy like a first show of affection in a new relationship or the sweet potato fries that are bold and zesty like the exciting fling you've always wanted, it will leave you wanting more. As your relationship with Black Sheep Cafe becomes more serious and you get into the entrée stage of it, you will find that the main dishes are hearty, complex, and have all the tastes and textures that you have been looking for. Everything will have a wonderful blend of textures and tastes that will make you forget but appreciate all of the bland food you had before. You will soon find what you like the most about the restaurant, whether it's the blend of flavors in the chimichanga, the perfectly combined textures of the burger, or the special of the day that's a surprise waiting just for you, every time you come to visit. Finally, if you can handle it, you may let Black Sheep Cafe entice you with dessert. You may fall prey to the succulent curves of a poached pear or the sultry taste of the crème brulee, but either way you will end the night entranced by what this restaurant has to offer. Best part is the menu is constantly changing and evolving, so it will always stay fresh and exciting. One way or another, if you take the time give Black Sheep Cafe a try, you may find that it holds everything that you have been looking for.

Red beef Navajo Taco all the way. We have been a few times with friends...everyone that we take absolutely loves the place, as do I. The environment is cozy and the food is delicious and fresh. Definitely a must-do in Provo.

A really unique place - well worth trying. Get reservations. Native American Cuisine with a Mexican, New Mexican twist. Very different and very good.

I went to lunch today with 2 friends, one of whom had been twice before and absolutely loved it. We had reservations and managed to beat the lunch rush. We didn't have any problems with service initially but when things got busy, we had to wait awhile for refills since there were only 2 waitresses for the whole place. 2 of us got the Navajo tacos, the flavor was amazing but the meat was really fatty which grossed me out,and I later wished I had ordered the bleu burger instead. I gave 3 stars because of the fatty beef and because the stressed out waitresses stressed is out! Next time I'm going to go for a late lunch and order a different entree.

This restaurant is truly a "find". From the moment we entered the restaurant to the time we left, the service was gracious, friendly, and attentive without hovering. Our server, Gibson was an absolute delight. Before serving our main course, he actually asked if we were ready for it, rather than rushing us through our salads! What a concept putting the customer first! But of course, we go to restaurants for the food and Black Sheep Cafe absolutely excels! The flavors were unique and the presentation was a work of art. I would say SHARE the salad it's really too big for one person. I can't wait to go back.

the waitress was kinda dumb, it was clear that she wanted our order right then and there. food was really good, i don;t think the food was overpriced at all. I had a southwest style iceberg wedge salad and a bowl of posole. They were both awesome, and I was stuffed. It was very satisfying. They make all kinds of claims like "no can openers", "local", etc, but I really doubt they are in the back JUICING prickly pears and lemons to make lemonade.

This place was highly recommended and deserves to be. Delicious, creative menu. Cool concept, nice staff, and a liquor menu that made me laugh. This place is so un-Provo it deserves to be checked out. Orange County need something this original - nice chandelier by the way.

We were pretty excited to try this place after reading all the reviews! It was really good and great atmosphere, except for the screaming babies on both sides of us....anyway, my one complaint was the shrimp appetizer. The four medium shrimp were disproportionate to the sea of blue corn maize that they were sitting in. Other than that, it was delicious.

The restaurant is fresh and modern. It is nicely decorated and very clean. We went for lunch at 11:30 and beat the lunch rush. There were so many delicious items to choose from. I decided on the vegetarian Navajo taco. I also got a side a sweet potato fries. My friend got a ginormous burger that was wrapped in Indian bread instead of a bun. I thought everything tasted fresh and the flavors stood out on their own. I would love to go back and try more! Definitely on my list of repeat restaurants.

Well there seems to be some complaints about service. We were warned that it would take a while to get our food by our server. It's amazing what a little communication will do. Of course we went on a thursday night. The service was good. They were out of the lemonade that many people suggest. The food was good. I had a good Chimichanga and my wife had the Navajo Tacos. You can tell that a lot of work goes into giving the dinner a great eating experience. I didn't make this 5 stars because didn't leave that night craving the food. Maybe that will come with more visits.I'm a fan of this Utah Valley original.

The squash soup and the black sheep pinto navajo taco were delicious--perfect for vegetarians. These were well worth the stop. Plus, the atmosphere is very comfortable and it has a good wine and beer list.

The food is consistently delicious, fresh and flavorful. The service is fast and the waiters are friendly. I am always so impressed with it. Try the Navajo Taco Trio or any of the burgers - everything is to die for.

The Navajo tacos are great and everything else we tried was spectacular. We went at lunchtime so it was very laid-back and a fun atmosphere, but obviously they didn't have their full menu. Don't come if you're in a hurry because the service gives you time to soak in the unique atmosphere here.

First time eating here and I had no problem getting a table midweek, the hostess was welcoming and great throughout dinner. I loved the space and the smells coming from the kitchen, it's nice to see a wide range of diners from family, couples, groups and business men. I had the Black Sheep Burger and it's the longest time I've ever waited for a burger in my life...maybe they're breaking down the cow in the back. The server let me know everything is made from scratch and that's why the wait is a little long, when it did it arrive it was flavorful and perfectly cooked. As for the sweet potato fries, I thought they would be a little crisper...again the server said they use potato and not yams...I'll go with that but what about all the oil.. my limp fries were tasty. My server was great and I would dine here again.

Went to BSC for my birthday dinner this year. The restaurant is small, but bright and comfortable. We were seated quickly and our server was friendly, knowledgeable of the menu and attentive. There were three in our party. We were informed that the only app they had that night was the shrimp, which was really disappointing until the shrimp came. Absolutely delicious, sweet, spicy, rich and perfectly cooked. It was the best part of the meal. The enchiladas were also rich and flavorful. The beans and rice were so fresh and perfectly seasoned. The new york strip was good, but overcooked and not $33 market price good. I guess you shouldn't order steak at a southwestern style restaurant. The navajo taco looked exactly like every other awful navajo taco I've ever had. Shredded lettuce, meat cheese and beans on flatbread. The taco was absolutely delicious though, thankfully, because it looked like cafeteria food. My other complaint is that two of the three entrees came out almost 10 minutes before the third. Even though BSC didn't quite nail the service and food, what they did get right definitely outweighed the bad. The shrimp alone is worth 5 stars. Maybe we caught them on a bad night, but I still left full and happy so 4 stars. I look forward to going back.

Black sheep is good! highlights: guacamole, nachos, Navajo tacos, friendly service. I never feel like it's that pricey but I usually end up spending more than I think I'm going to. Anyway, personal finances are my issues and not theirs. This and communal are the best restaurants in provo.

  • Nathan S.

Black sheep was fantastic. It is more on the expensive side, but quality of food is excellent. I ordered the hog joule tacos, and the flavor of the ingredients were so well married together and balanced. Other recommendations: get the Navajo taco or one of their burgers. Their sweet potato fries are also really good.

My friend and I just went to Black Sheep for lunch and we were not disappointed! First of all, the service was fantastic and our waiter was so good at his job, all of his recommendations were spot on. I got the asparagus as an appetizer and it was the best asparagus I've ever had..and that's saying a lot! Then I got the southwestern chicken wrap and my friend got the black sheep salad, both things were so delicious and came with the yummiest, perfectly seasoned fries. Oh and we also got their lemonade which I highly recommend!!! New Provo favorite.

The best Mexican food I have ever had. And I have had Mexican food in Mexico, San Diego and Los Angeles :) This Navajo chef has a gift. We had a chicken chile relleno/chimichanga fusion and also a bison burger with cabernet reduction. Both absolutely delicious. Our server Ryan was wonderful as well. Loved the chandelier and art on the walls. The only thing I think could be improved would be the wine selections, as the wines could be a little better to complement the wonderful food. Everything else is awesome. Going back there for lunch tomorrow :)

OK, here's the dealio. My wife and I went to Black Sheep Cafe a couple years ago, not long after it opened. There was a lot of hype around the new restaurant and we make it a point to try everything from hole in the wall taco shops to La Jolla Groves. The waitress suggested that we try the Navajo tacos so we ordered the Navajo taco sampler that came with 3 different meats and flavors. I was pretty excited when they came out! But then... the steak was chewy and flavorless, the onions were stinky and old, and the fry bread on the bottom wasn't even hot and was quite chewy. But Andrew, you rated this place a 5 stars!!?? Yes, yes I did. Because I believe in second chances. Almost 3 years later I decided that I didn't want any of my usual lunch places (SLABpizza, India Palace Buffet, JDawgs, Cubbys) so I threw caution to the wind and went to Black Sheep Cafe for lunch. I was pretty skeptical but I went ahead and ordered the Goat Burger (1/2lb patty, arugula, roasted portobello and red pepper, chipotle aioli, and a whole lot of garlic goat cheese all wrapped in a Indian fry bread) with a side of sweet potato fries. It took almost 20 minutes for my burger and fries to come out and this upset me a little bit and then... and then I took my first bite... POW, SMASH, BANG, POP, SLAP!!! I think I died that day and went to heaven. It was the best burger I had ever had in my life! The freshness of the ingredients, the perfect seasoning across all levels. It is expensive, but for a reason. If you want wilted iceberg, stale buns, and gamey meat, go to Red Robin. And let's not forget those perfect sweet potato wedges with the slightly spicy and smoky dipping sauce. They were also the best fries I had ever had. I will be going to this restaurant as often as my wallet will allow me. And maybe even then. TL;DR Go to this restaurant and get a burger, not a Navajo taco. You will be so happy.

For me, Black Sheep Cafe is a Godsend. Living in Provo Utah the selection of non-chain, high quality restaurants, is extremely limited. When someone asks me what are good restaurants in Provo, there are really only two that come to mind. Communal, and Black Sheep. I have tried every item on the menu at blacksheep over the last 4 or 5 times that I have been here. I can honestly say that every single menu item is delicious. My personal favorite - the filet with the cabernet reduction sauce served with a side of parmesan mashed potatoes that are to die for. IMPORTANT - if you are coming here for a quick bite, DO NOT COME HERE. I usually come here when I have an entire evening to spend on good food, and good company. In all of the times that I have been here (regardless of the night of the week) I have never been in an out in under 2 hours. Honestly, I think the hosting and waiting staff could step up their game a little bit. It is hit or miss - some of the staff are phenomenal but some just have no idea what is going on. This place gets super busy on fridays also, so try and get a reservation or you will not get in. The chimichanga is delicious, the fries starter, the navajo tacos, everything is good. My recommendation is order whatever you think looks best, because it doesn't matter. I have tried every dish and they are all very very very good. Don't forget to order a bottle of the cactus lemonade as well - very refreshing. Bottom Line - average service with incredible food. Come for the food and the experience, and plan on spending a while here. It isn't a bad thing, it's just the way it is.

This is actually more like 4.5 stars, but that isn't a possibility so I'm giving them a straight up 5 due to our fantastic experience. We arrived when it opened (5:30) with no reservations and 6 people lined up in front of us. We were in and out in an hour. Kathrine (Kat) was our server and she did a fantastic job. She always kept us informed and had great recommendations. We had the cactus pear lemonade which was fantastic and not too sweet! It was almost like you were drinking really yummy water, very light. To start my husband and I shared the black sheep wedge. It was delicious! We also shared the Navajo tacos and buffalo burger. Both were yummy and crazy fresh! It depends on what I'm in the mood for but at that time I preferred the buffalo burger. I would absolutely order both again. Very creative menu, great presentation, super fresh, and yummy. Awesome service. Only negative was that the pretzel bun was dry. The bun fell apart or got very soggy. That's the half star off if I could. And I can understand how it could get really backed up and take a long time if you go on a really busy night.

Great restaurant with a novel menu What you can expect: A fusion of experience starting with Italian options for small plates and ending with a Mexican and Native American fusion entree What is unique: vinaigrette and lemon that has cactus infused into it and it seems to work Food: Tastes great especially their squash soup is amazing and is a must have and seems to pair well with their in house black sheep salad. Pros: Awesome service which contributed in a big way to my 5 stars coupled with good food and a casual dining experience surely has the ingredients for a winner. Con: Pricing is on higher side so go with some junk in your trunk (I meant money in your wallet). No dessert option on the menu. Suggestions: if you are planning on going for dinner on a Tuesday, do go early as they have a Tapas Tuesday night where they have partnered with BYU and trust me around 9 pm it gets crazy crowded and every staff gets super busy tending to this big crowd , so you might find yourself waiting that extra longer time. Also due to credo to space ratio it can get pretty stuffy pretty quick on the inside.

I love The Black Sheep. My favorite place to eat in Provo. The sweet potato fries are relish, and so are the Navajo tacos. Don't miss this place, just go early because it fills up fast!

Walking in to the restaurant I didn't know what to expect. Sophie, the stewardess, was very helpful with her recommendations and was very kind. The wait wasn't too bad at all, especially since we showed up about 6:30. The waitress Kirstie was super cool, and in my opinion went above and beyond what was expected. The cactus pear lemonade is really good. Highly recommend it. I ordered the braised pork chimichanga. It took a half hour to get my food which I felt was pretty long. The first bite I got a mouth full of pork fat. Overall it was pretty good though. I tried some of the buffalo nickel burger. It was a little overpowering. The fries were really good but I didn't like the sweet potato fries. Overall I would give the service a 5 star but the food a 3 star since it took so long and the price was a little high. So I settled for 4 stars.

ummm... another one of those, WERE REALLY UNIQUE AND COOL AND WE OWN YOU MOTHER *******. I was going to give a 4 (this is like a 3.5 for me) until two people who came in to be seated were not helped for about 10 minutes and they left. I thought dub step TF. There was eye contact made with staff... but the two people were just ignored... they werent even that busy!! i mean... there were 3 two-seater tables available, and 3 four-seater tables available... and we waited 15 minutes to be seated. I am still so confused. (total of maybe 16 tables there?) Um the food was pretty good, a little less quality than price. I got the navajo taco for 13 dolares it was... good? (im ron burgundy?) it had a nice little taste dance in my mouth but i wasnt like I NEED MORE!! because i didnt. The green chili fries were the highlight of my experience. I don't know what it was... perhaps how easy it would be to prepare for myself at my house... but it was good. I wanted more so... extra points to BSC. The price of the 2 entrees, and fries was (with 18% tip) $44. So... i dont know... 44 dollars... do you know how many bdub wings that buys on tues and thurs???????? 73.3333 wings. THINK ABOUT THAT!!! THE VERDICT: Just another one of those hey... we have a weird menu... we are near center street... and we cost a lot of money... so bring your college debt with you and bring your date and hey lets have a good time!! I would say try it once... and maybe not again... if you do go again... you fit a stereotype. but a sexy one.

Had a great lunch today. My wife and I went with our daughter and her husband. James our waiter was great. My wife and I got there and were seated promptly. We had to wait for our daughter and her husband so we ordered the caprese appetizer which was perfect. Delicious creamy cheese and huge slices of heirloom tomatoes in a nice vinaigrette. The guys ordered the green chile stew and the ladies ordered the green chile Navajo taco. We thought everything was fantastic. The pork in our dishes were perfectly tender and the sauces and broths were very well seasoned and tasted great. We all had to order the street corn after seeing it in yelp and it was great. The stew came with bread that was out of this world and great for dipping in the broth. To drink we had the cactus pear lemonade which was wonderful not to sweet not to tart All in all a good meal.

Went there for our anniversary, first off one suggestion to take reservations for small groups. Huge turn off when they tell you they only take reservations for six or more groups. This style of restaurant they should take any size tabletop. Pro: the food itself was amazing! The tapas was delightful. Ordered the special a Chile verde burrito and there was so much flavor. It was an explosion of flavors in my mouth.

As you walk in to the Black Sheep Cafe, you may be struck by the beautiful space and open kitchen. It is inviting and the service is excellent!! I have been twice. The first meal consisted of the Navajo Taco which was excellent in taste and presentation! I highly recommend this dish if this is your first time going! The second visit, I ordered the pork sandwich. Again the presentation was lovely and the taste was good. I loved the homemade nann and the adobo mayo...but the pork chop was tough and the sandwich wasn't built in a practice way. I ended up having deconstruct my sandwich in order to eat it with a fork and knife. I will definitely go again and look forward to trying a third dish.

For a later dinner I was surprised at the slow service which was very pleasant but fairly slow. The restaurant was busy but not packed. I enjoyed the presentation of all the dishes right away but was disappointed to see that the menu did NOT offer any vegetarian options. When I asked I was pointed to a squash soup and then told that the enchiladas could be made with squash. So I thought "these guys need people to request vegetarian items if the menu is going to adapt." I ordered the squash enchiladas which ended up being very good. My mother ordered a bruchetta which she enjoyed very much. They ran out of the lemonade that everyone seems to love :(

This place was not all it's cracked up to be. I went with my wife for our anniversary and we had some of the worst customer service. First we order our food and an appetizer. We got the green chili fries....they were probably the most salty dish I have ever had in my entire life. But We just kept eating them because we had already been waiting for our food for 30 minutes and thought maybe that was how they were supposed to taste. Especially when your waitress never checks on you then you just kind of keep eating what's in front of you. Then we sat and waited for another 30 minutes for our actual food. We were so hungry and not once did our waitress let us know where our food was or how much longer or sorry for the wait. We got our meals finally and ate and then we needed to get out of there to make our movie so our waitress had the hostess check us out and I look at my card statement the next day and they charged us double what we spent. I called and they told us they would refund it and about two hours later they still haven't refunded us so we called again and they said oh sorry we are cleaning up from lunch we will do it in an hour they still haven't done it. You would think refunding a customer of 50 dollars would be a priority guess not. Worst customer service, worst experience at what is supposed to be a fine dinning expensive restaurant. Hope you have a better experience and pray they don't charge you twice because you may never get your money back.

For the past year I've been hearing nothing but Black Sheep Cafe this, Black Sheep Cafe that... My Yelp peers, whom I take the recommendation of very highly, absolutely adore this restaurant and even make special trips to Provo to dine at Black Sheep Cafe. So this past weekend, when my gentleman companion and I were hiking in Provo Canyon and came into town for a spot of lunch, we weren't wondering, "Where should we eat?" The answer was always Black Sheep Cafe, duh. Imagine my surprise when our casual lunch at a highly-recommended dining oasis turned into a 2-hour service experience from hell. First, you have to be prepared. Know that this is not a "quick bite to eat" type of place. I overheard Kenny explain to a customer at a neighboring table that everything on the menu is made fresh and it is purposely a slower dining experience (A+). More on Kenny, I was envious of our neighbor, and think we would have had an entirely different experience had we been fortunate enough to have him as our knowledgeable server. But no, we drew the short straw today and were stuck with Miss Slow Service... From the moment she approached our table, my dining companion observed, "She's f*ing high." Now, I have nothing against a person who unwinds with a bit of bud. But furreals. This could've been a hidden camera show with the endless errors she made and the amount of time it took her to make those errors. All the food was delicious, but bad service overpowers any memory of what we ate. Here is what we were served: Arnold Palmer, fountain drink, caprese salad, a plain side salad, goat burger, house fries, an order of asparagus, and a second order of asparagus. Now here is what we actually ordered: Arnold Palmer, fountain drink, caprese salad, Black Sheep salad, and a Black Sheep burger to share, which comes with two sides according to the menu: we selected the asparagus and house fries. I knew we had a problem when the first salad came out incorrectly. I got up and walked across the restaurant to tell Miss Slipshod Service and she didn't come to take the plate away. It just there on the table, sad and shamed like it knew it was wrong. Next, when the wrong burger came out and with an extra order of the side, my partner and I entirely gave up hope on being able to enjoy our lunch. Miss Sweet Service ended up comping almost our entire meal because of her mistakes and offered us a dessert on the house, which we declined. Having worked in the service industry myself for many years, I am sympathetic to everyone having an "off" day. But this horrific experience is something that could have easily been avoided with a good manager who is attentive to when they need to send a server home for the day.

My roommate works here and I've been wanting to try it for quite some time. We started off with the prickly pear lemonade omg! So simple but just perfect to go with our meal. Also the fry bread with honey butter yummy yummy. The wedge salad my dad and I split. Whoa! Super good with a kick! The creamy cotija-chipotle-lime dressing was amazing and so different for a wedge salad. Topped with tomatoes, crisp bacon, red onion, more cotija cheese & cilantro. For our entrees we got the buffalo nickel burger. 1/2 lb. Buffalo burger, lemon-rosemary mayo, jack cheese, grilled onion, cabernet sauvignon reduction, arugula, tomato, pretzel bun, rosemary cotija fries. I absolutely loved it! So many great flavors. My dad got the special, chile relleno and I thought that was great as well. I don't think you can go wrong here! Great service, presentation and meal. A little pricey but worth every penny.

Tasty, may take a while food--with average service. If you've got a tight schedule, think of somewhere else. Lunch is usually a bit faster than dinner, but either way come for the food and the experience. One item to note: last year we visited in January--the restaurant was frigid. There is no vestibule on the front door so every time anyone goes in or out the temp dropped five degrees.

Pretentious... Downtown Provo has become the land of overpriced food and horrible service. Just because you are different, doesn't justify you charging absurd amounts for your food. We started with some appetizers. We got the green chili fries, some shrimp dish and filet mignon bruschetta. The green chili fries were okay, the chili was good but the pairing didn't really work for me.. The shrimp dish had like 2 shrimp with something like grits underneath.. It was mediocre and finally the filet mignon bruschetta was alright. The flavors were okay, but not the best bruschetta I've ever had. I also got a drink. It was the prickly pear lemonade. This was actually quite delicious. For dinner I got the Hog Jowl tacos.. This is the only reason I gave this place 3 stars. The flavors were pretty amazing with these. It tasted like a cross between bacon and honey baked ham. They were a bit fatty.. But the flavors were pretty great. At $19 for the plate though.. That is a little crazy.. I tried some of my families dinners. The enchiladas were average, the buffalo burger was actually pretty tasty. I wouldn't go back to this place.. It was fun to experience the hog jowl tacos.. but not worth the price and the feeling of being some hipster yuppy.. ; )

I had the buffalo nickel burger, though it was a difficult choice from the options because I love trying new things. It was delicious, a little messy, and super filling. I always finish my burgers, but this time there was a couple extra bites I shared.

Such delicious. Much flavor. As a notoriously picky ( and vegetarian, lame I know) eater, who has lived in this, the place that is Provo, for 7 glorious years, I give MUCHLY SUCHLY approval to this place! The food is SO flavorful and fresh and healthy ( in that it is fresh/ whole ingredients) and good! The lighting and atmosphere are great. I am normally kind of a cheapskate ( also lame, I KNOW SO SUE ME jk don't ) but... It is seriously worth it to me to put delicious warm food in my mouth :D Favorites: Enchiladas, Navajo tacos, lemonade. Least favorites: Their squash soup tasted weird to me. But I went with another girl and she loved it soooo ? CONS: freakishly long wait times, for seating and food. But if you come prepared for this and get drunk in the sweetness of their pink cactus lemonade and conversation while you wait, it can be a very pleasant drawn out experience. PRO TIP: Order (off menu) honey butter to eat with your fry bread. DERICIOUS i terr you.

Love it. The menu is very unique and the service is always helpful and kind. I've tried many things here and have yet to find something I don't like. They have an eclectic and tasty drink menu that totally worth looking at. We always come back.

Provo UT- This is probably my favorite restaurant. Everything I have had has been very good although I do prefer the dinner items to the lunch items. If you find yourself here for dinner you must try the Hog Jowl tacos. They are just amazing. The flavor is so rich and complex it's a delicious explosion in your mouth. Sadly they removed these from the lunch menu and sometimes they do sell out so if like us you are driving all the way down from Salt Lake make sure you get there early to ensure they will have them still! Other yumminess: We had a surf and turf special once when they were out of hog jowl tacos that was bison and shrimp and it was incredible. It made me forget that I was sad I couldn't get what I went in for. The other tacos are delicious but again mmm hog jowl. For lunch we really like the Pasole or the Green Chili. We've also had a combo of both on recommendation from our waiter and always with fry bread. Oh man the fry bread is so good. The soups are so filly it's a very hearty meal. We have had all the burgers and my favorite is the goat cheese one. The Blue burger is very good but VERY saucy. The Black Sheep burger was yummy enough but I probably would not order it again (the ingredients didn't stand out to me but the meat was very tasty). And last but not least the cactus pear lemonade is super delicious. It sounds strange but if you like a mild almost berry lemonade you'll enjoy this! If you find yourself with in driving distance do yourself a favor and go! ANd this does not impact my review but I like to know there is no changing table.

This is my favorite restaurant in Provo. Southwestern food served in a small space with a unique vibe. It's a popular place and the dining process (getting seated, ordering, and the food getting out) takes a while so make sure you give yourself plenty of time. My favorite is the green chile enchiladas, especially with a fried egg on top. Their navajo tacos are great--I prefer green chile pork to red chile beef, but both are good. The buffalo and goat cheese burgers are also great, but a little messy. The hog jowl tacos are very popular, but I don't think it's their best dish. I've only had positive experiences with the wait staff. Everyone is very friendly!

I've been here a couple times now and have yet to be let down. The service is great, the atmosphere is great, the restaurant is clean, and the food is amazing. Ive tried the black sheep burger, the pork chop sandwich, and the chicken sandwich. All of them are so delicious and full of flavor. I really love the navajo twist on traditional american food. Its a great little change up from the everyday. They use the freshst ingredients, you can around and watch them prepare the meals through a window. Those who Ive come with have ordered the salads and seem to rave about them. The portion size is perfect especially because it all tastes so darn good. The sweet potato fries are hand cut and made in house with real sweet potatoes and not the typical yam. They are so unique and tasty! In my opinion, Black Sheep Cafe is one of the best, if not the best fancier restaurants in Provo. I wouldn't say fancy , but I would say it s bar higher than most restaurants in the area. Its not priced fancy thats for sure. In fact its about the same price as you pay at a chilis or a red robin. It is trendy and conveniently located in the heart of downtown Provo. Perfect to bring a date or a group. Give it a try!

Just passing through town, but the food was awesome! I am not just using that word loosely either. The food was prepared very well, and the flavors was everything I expected. The waitress did a fantastic job of keeping my glass never get less than a half full. Which is something that I just restaurant by. The only things I didn't like about the food was I felt like the lettuce was too large for the actually burger, and when I took my first bite it was almost all onion. Granted I like onion, but for my first bite into a burger to taste like a half a onion...it was a surprise. I could definitely see myself stopping by again in the near to distant future.

I loved this place. The prickly pear lemonade is heavenly and I had the best salad I have EVER had. (The one with candied pecans, cranberries and cojita!) Also tried the Squash soup, which surprised me as I don't usually even like Squash.. very beautiful flavors here. Service was fantastic and welcoming, the decor is gorgeous and they play good music. Presentation of the food was very well done as well. Black Sheep is a GEM.

We decided to drive down to Provo to check this place out. We got there at 6 so it was not too busy. The waiter explained that the food usually takes a while since it is made from scratch. We thought the food was gonna take about 30 to 40 minutes but it only took 15 minutes for them to bring our appetizer out and less than ten minutes after our main dishes came out. We had the cactus lemonade and the bleu cheese shrimp plate as appetizer which were amazing. They could have added more shrimps but in general the dish was great. My wife got the chimichanga which was very tasty and it was a good size portion. I asked the waiter to surprise me and he brought the hog tacos and although there were only two tacos, they were full of meat and tasted great. I was satisfied with their service. The price was reasonable for a high end restaurant and the food was great tasting. The waiter is really good at explaining things and if you ask him to surprise you he definitely will! I will definitely go back to this restaurant and I definitely recommend it.

A great local restaurant serving both Mexican and Native American style food. We shared a chile-changa and the pork Navajo taco. Both were delicious and presented beautifully. The service was attentive but not overbearing. I'll definitely go back!

This has my vote for best Pozole! The pork chunks were succulent and the portion of meat was generous. The chile broth was perfectly spiced to enhance, but not overpower, the dish. Served with fry bread, it was a perfect meal. My fiancé ordered the chimirelleno and was just as pleased with his dish. We couldn't resist the orange habanero brûlée for dessert and we were glad we indulged. We will be returning to try the other menu items - what a terrific find!!!

Very good. I was a little hesitant to try this place because . . . well, I'm not sure, actually. But I went for a business dinner, tried the hog jowl tacos, and was blown away by how good they are. Yes, in my ultimate cheapness I do admit that 19 bucks for two tacos and a very small portion of rice and beans is quite a dive for people like me (though I'll always fork over the money if the food is worth it), but I absolutely loved the layered flavors. The hog jowl, which is incredibly fatty, melted perfectly with the maple sauce and jimica. The rice was okay, the indian bread was fine, but the tacos were perfect. I don't think I've ever had those flavors before--melt-in-your-mouth pork, jalapeño, great sauce . . . totally worth it. Also, the place is has a nice ambiance. Totally date worthy. I'll definitely be coming back.

I really I joy this place. The food is really good. My husband try to make here a couple times a year. The only thing is it's a small dinning area so you can end up waiting for a while. But I do love how intimate the atmosphere is.

What a great find! I had the pork chop sandwich with fries. It was delicious, very flavorful. I will make this place a regular stop. I don't think you will be disappointed with anything on the menu. To drink their ice tea and pink lemonade are unique. I had them make it into an Arnold Palmer - very tasty! Must try. Service was excellent. Can't wait to come back and explore the rest of their menu.

Black sheep's lunch burger is one of the best I have ever had. It is on a delicious flat bread and the meat is cook fully but still succulent. We didn't love the burger as much at dinner, it was on a thicker roll and harder to eat. Staff friendly. Atmosphere unique and fun.

Who would have guessed our best meal for a 5 day road trip in Utah would be in Provo? Even all the tourists in Moab don't seem to attract this level of casual sophistication in food creation, and at very reasonable prices. It's #1 on the restaurant listings for Provo for good reason. It's in a block full of restaurants and trendy shops. The chef is of native american descent and many of the dishes show an influence of green chillies, earthy mushroom, bean and creative takes onfries, tacos and enchiladas.Plenty of veg. choices most dishes at lunch were $ 10 or less. Specials are more around $ 18- 20. The meal we had was so flavorfull and full of care. Fries in green chilli salsa, Warm chilli verde pork stew with potatoes and roasted vegetables,we had the nan style bread. Also the mushroom soup was perfectly done. One of those places you wish you could stick around for a return visit to. Glad we stumbled on it.

I love this place! The burgers here, all of them, are incredible! The navajo tacos are delicious, but not enough food for how much they charge. Food can take a while and they are often busy, make sure that you call for a reservation ahead of time.

Black Sheep, you seriously upped your game. Not only is your food still mouth-watering amazing, but I had very pleasant experience with your wait staff and service. They were all attentive and kind, and the manager even stopped by to make sure everything was alright. This was lunch service, and we had our orders taken + food delivered within 15 minutes of sitting down. The timing was impressive, especially for this scratch-made grub. The manager says dinner service takes a bit longer, about an hour, due to the hand-made nature of the food. Nice ambiance. Beautiful light fixtures, nice silverware and linen napkins. And yes, its a bit more expensive than Dennys or Chuck-O-Rama, but Black Sheep is a cut above the rest.

The green chile stew was the best I've tasted outside New Mexico and Mom loved the posole. The place is a bit noisy and the fan chilled us a bit, but if you bring a sweater and don't mind the noise, the food was awesome.

This place is a gem. Best grub in Utah county. I'd recommend to anyone. Favorite items include: Hog Jowl Tacos Green Chili Stew Wedge Salad Cactus Pear Lemonade Enchiladas Bison Burger But it's all good. Home run!

I really want to like this place more than the 3 stars, but the 'bang-for-your-buck' ratio just isn't there. I like the concept of the restaurant, but the food is only good, not great and the price is a tad high for what you get. The service is always super slllloooowwww.

  • Kelly T.

Sorry but I think this cafe has been far too overstated. In my opinion the downtown location is the only thing it has going for it. The food is generic American hamburgers and greasy frybread. You can get a better hamburger at other places. Other hamburger places have nicer service. The servers were uppity and one must make a reservation. Blech!

    (2)
  • Kelly R.

DON't waste your time! Go somewhere else!!! After sitting for 30+ minutes I finally had to tackle a server besides our own, and beg for water. And this lack of service continued: wrong salad, bad attitude and there was another 20 minute period of neglect. Where was our server? We had been in the restaurant a good 45 minutes before our server even came to take our order and while we were ordering we found out they had a kids menu. Our hostess forgot to give those to us when we sat down. That would have been nice to know!!! The food was mediocre. Definitely not good enough to justify the extremely poor service. NEVER going back here!

I've been to several restaurants in L.A/ Utah and Mexico. And I've never had anything like this before. The Buffalo Nickle Burger was perfect. I think the bun could've been softer, but yet I enjoyed it. The great girl I was with, had the Hog Jowl Tacos. Blue corn tortillas makes a great presentation. The marinate of the meat was sweet but just the right amount. The prickly pear lemonade tops everything off to a perfect balance. This place is great for a date or even just flyin' solo for lunch. I'm going back soon to try the Goat Burger.

I wouldn't pay attention to any negative reviews this place has received because it's pretty damn good and authentic tasting. I've had many Indian tacos and fry bread in my day (I'm part Native) and this place was almost better than the fry bread I've had in my time. I tried the posole which was amazing! He had the Indian taco which was equally delicious. We had the smothered fried appetizer, ridiculous and mouthwatering. The service was on point and the food didn't take long to get to the table, we did go on a Friday afternoon so it wasn't too packed. This was the first restaurant I tried in Utah and it definitely set the bar high. To be quite honest I haven't had anything as spectacular, so I will eat this before we leave back home to Cali! Do yourself a favor and give it a try!

Let me start off by mentioning that everything at Black Sheep is made from scratch, to order. So have a quick snack before you head in or you might be waiting awhile. I ordered the prickly pear margarita, shared the Navaho taco, and a bowl of chile verde stew, and a side of street corn. Everything was so delicious. I'm a big fan of Indian fry bread and the owners mother makes it fresh everyday for the restaurant. They served it with some super delicious honey butter, but it was just as good dipped in their super delicious stew. The Navaho taco was totally awesome, and the beans and rice on the side were equally delicious. Don't be fooled by the "size" of the taco because it's mega filling. It was all really good. I highly recommend a visit if you're in Provo!

I had the Black Sheep Tacos here. They're one of the few vegetarian items on the menu and they were absolutely DELICIOUS! I like their concept of "Native American Food", but the prices are definitely extravagant. I've had similar dishes in other cities for around $10, whereas the Black Sheep Tacos were $13. One noteworthy tip: I'm not sure if this applies to all their tacos, but the Black Sheep Tacos are executed like a Tostada in that you get your ingredients layered on top of a thick, fluffy and soft bread. Don't expect a traditional, Mexican style taco.

I'm a fan of Black Sheep Cafe, it's one of the few places that I've specifically named when asked where I would like a gift certificate. Located right on University Avenue in the heart of Provo, the location is great, but the food is better. Navajo food is unique and is a must try. The Navajo burgers are my favorite. If it's your first time there, try one of the burgers and you won't regret it. The meat is thick and juicy and the nanniskadii bread is very unique and delicious. If you read a lot of Black Sheep reviews, people love the burgers and it'll start sounding like a broken record. The sweet potato fries aren't the main course, but they are amazalicious (Yes, I made that word up, but it was the most accurate description I could think of). They are made with real sweet potatoes and not yams, which is common in a lot of other restaurants. I've attempted to recreate their sweet potato fries, and although my wife loves my fries too, I don't do Black Sheep's Sweet Potato fries justice.

Looked this up on Yelp and it was truly amazing! Best Navajo Tacos I've ever eaten with a noveau flavor. We had the BBQ pork and traditional with green chili. Both were outstanding and our waitress was very friendly. It is near the BYU campus and easy access from I-15. It is worth running up the street a few blocks for this treat! I've had Navajo Tacos in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona and these were by far the best ever! Set in an art gallery, you will enjoy some beautiful, unusual art and a great chandelier in the main room.

The only reason four stars instead of five is because of dinner. The dinner menu is not wildly different from their lunch menu, but is substantially marked up for no better tasting food. However, GO FOR LUNCH! The menu is totally reasonably priced and all of the items are filling. The lunch burgers are especially delicious. The Bleu Burger is my favorite burger there. There is plenty of meat, it's usually very well cooked, the arugula and dressing with the bacon give it a sweet taste, and the naaniskadi bread that they use for a bun is incredible. A definite yes for lunch!

It's always great to see another hip spot with delicious food open in the heart of Provo--right on University Ave. near Center St. Black Sheep Cafe came highly recommended by some friends from the area, and it did not disappoint! Not in the least. We ordered a Navajo taco, green chile stew, street corn, and sweet potato fries. Everything was made from scratch, to order, so the wait for the food was a solid fifteen to twenty minutes...but totally worth it. Oh, and their fry bread comes with honey butter. What more do you need?

I thought Black Sheep was just okay. We tried a LOT of dishes, and the only memorable ones for me were the bleu fire shrimp and the Filet Mignon Ragu bruschetta (both appetizers). I thought the other appetizers we tried and the Navajo tacos were just okay. Cool spot for Provo, but I feel like the food needs to be just a little better to really be a contender!

I'll save you the time of reading the long review. Our soup was magnificent. The main courses very good. The ingredients top notch. As many others say, the service is a bit lacking and I can see how it's considered slow. It's still worth coming to. Black Sheep is walking a fine line between fine and casual dining. It's a beautiful old facility. They've removed the out of place jewelry making shop. They got a liquor license. We wanted cocktails to start. One of their handful of cocktails looked good to my wife. It was quite good, although a little sweet. Nothing struck my fancy. It turns out they have High West Rye but can't make a Manhattan. Actually, they can't really make anything else. The short wine list is a bit odd too. Per the start of the review, some of the food was very good, but some was not as excellent. It would normally get 3 stars, but as a locally owned place, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. They've come a long ways since my first lunch there, at some point, they may figure things out. I hope so.

PROVO, UT: I was delighted to come try the Black Sheep Cafe after reading all about it; its exciting to see innovative fare start to make the scene in humble Provo. Ambience & Service (5 stars): The word "Cafe" connotes a "homie" feeling or even a little bit "kitschy." Not so at Black Sheep. The ambience is clean, modern, and a little upscale/formal. The waitstaff is proper and well versed in the cuisine. I liked it a lot and our server was great. FOOD - Tried a few things Navajo Taco (5 stars): This thing rocked. Warm, soft, fluffy Navajo fry bread/scone topped with flavorful helpings. Rice and smoky pinto beans were awesome as well. Prickly Pear Lemonade (4.5 stars): Sweet, refreshing, slightly unexpected flavor. I adore prickly pear and don't see this kind of innovation anywhere, thanks for bringing something original to the table. Green Chile Enchilada with Egg on top (3.5 stars): this was good, but looked better than it tasted. Not as flavorful as you would expect, but had a warm chile on a delicious enchilada. Burger (4 stars): This was an excellent burger: Pretzel bun, thick patty, melted cheese, lots of sweet and savory barbecue sauce with a ton of bacon. It is what you'd expect for a $15-$17 burger. Sweet Potato Fries (5 stars): these were epic fries, delicious and made from actual sweet potatoes, not yams. Excellent spicy aoli dip with them. Value Proposition (3 stars): Basically the prices are a little too high; each plate is priced about $2-3 higher than it should be and throws off the value proposition relative to locally available alternatives; nevertheless, the food is excellent as my ratings above indicate. I am looking forward to the next visit!

I went to Black Sheep in November 2014 after hearing a lot of wonderful things. I got the Navaho taco and it was pretty good. My rice and beans were cold. Cute atmosphere. Over priced. I'm from LA and couldn't believe the prices for this type of restaurant. I might try it out again but definitely won't go out of my way.

My sister and I know this is our favorite restaurant. She will travel down from SLC to come eat here. This is our go-to place if family is visiting, I love to bring friends for a delightful birthday meal, and I really enjoy dining here for special occasions. The first time we came (about 2 years ago) was for lunch and we felt a little under dressed (did not look our best haha) but the staff was friendly nonetheless. The wait for our food was unexpectedly long, I must admit. Although with the first bite into the beautiful display of burger, we agreed instantly it was well worth the wait. Now we have become comfortable enjoying the time with our company over a drink while we wait. Also we remember to dress nice for the occasion :) I highly recommend Black Sheep Cafe to anyone looking to spend a pleasant time dining out.

One of my favorite restaurants in Provo. It's one of the nicer places to eat in town as far as atmosphere and presentation, but it's still very casual. The Navajo burgers are the best thing on the menu. They have huge patties of meat and are loaded with flavor. And they're wrapped in the nanniskadii bread - so good. The only setback is the wait for food is long, even if the restaurant isn't busy. So be prepared to wait 40+ minutes for your food.

Remember these tips: Navajo bread is just as filling as regular bread. The Three Sisters appetizer is one of the best things you will ever eat. Ever. Don't eat too much Navajo bread; you must save room for the habanero creme brulee. That is all.

As an avid University of Utah athletics fan, there are very few reasons for me to go anywhere near the team down south. (I kid, I kid...) Luckily, Black Sheep Cafe is just another thing to add to that list. So far, everything I've had is pretty amazing. My favorites are the green chili navajo taco, pork chop sandwich, and last but definitely not least, the hog jowl tacos. Let's talk about these tacos. Some people may be turned off by the word "jowl" but trust me, this dish is incredible. While I've like everything tried, I'm not sure I can get anything else now. Except maybe adding those sweet potato fries as a side. They use actual sweet potatoes, not yams. Slightly sweet and paired perfectly with a spicy aioli sauce. The fries could stand to be crispier but they're thick cut so that may be harder to achieve. I saw a few people complain about service but I haven't had that experience. In fact, last time I went, Kenny was our server and he was great. He was attentive, kind, and had great suggestions. The only think keeping me from driving all the way down to Provo every other weekend to eat here is the price. It's a little more expensive than I think it should be but the food is wonderful enough to splurge on, on occasion.

Food: 5 stars The wifey and I went here for dinner tonight. I got the Buffalo burger and the wife got the hog jowl tacos. Both were amazing. Especially the fries that came with my burger. I honestly didn't pay attention to what was on them, and they didn't stay on my plate for long enough for me to investigate. Service: 3 stars It wasn't very busy in there, but the food took FOREVER to come out. The staff were nice and brought out some complementary fry bread with honey butter (which was also amazing). They may have just been trying to be nice since our kids were getting restless and hungry. Overall recommendation: come here when you want great food and have nowhere else to be. And you should probably just get the appetizer to tide you over until your entrée comes.

I'm obsessed. It's the only time in my life as a college student I've gone on a date and paid $19 for my portion alone and walked out guilt-free. Both the goat burger and the Buffalo burger are so immaculately seasoned and nigh the most perfect victuals ever to grace my lips. And the sweet potato fries are like what love would be if it could materialize into food. Yeah, a bit pricey, but sometimes a man needs to treat himself to the glory that is Black Sheep Café. If you're still reading this and are worried about blowing the dough, take it out of your tuition. It's worth it.

Great food. Had the cactus pear lemonade, the green chile fries, and the enchiladas. The food was so good. We had to wait for about 30 minutes for our table because the place is small and popular...but it was worth it. Will definitely go again

On a business trip from Hawaii, visiting the Wake Up Now corporate office. Came here because a fellow Philly business associate recommended it. Upon entering, i noticed the floor is plywood or somekind of raw material with high gloss. Very natural. I like it. The staff sat us right away. Table for 4 please! Lol. They were friendly so was the hott waitress. I did take note of a small 4 tier glass case on the left corner with handmade native items. She explained that the Black Sheep is a Navajo owned restaurant and grandma makes the fry bread dough every morning. Wat!? Navajo?! My first experience in a native restaurant. We ordered green chile fries, goat burgers and the bleu cheese burger with the jalapeño creme brulee. Oh my god! Let me tell you. To die for!!! Green chile fries is served with a half cooked egg on it which you let the yolk melt into the fries. The green chile sauce is bombast. Best navajo fries ever!!!! The burger was served with fry bread in a sauvignon sauce. Messy..but good messy...oh my god. So big that I couldnt finish. The creme brulee....is sooooooooo good! Best Ive ever had!!!!! I will come back. I will come back and bring my family too. Rated: best native american restaurant ever!

I agree with most of the review previously posted. The food is quite good, but a little over priced. That being said if you are looking for a nice night out with a cool vibe and ambiance as well as good fresh food it's an excellent choice in Provo, Utah. Because everything is made fresh you should plan to wait a little bit longer than you typically expect to at a restaurant. I had a green chile pork navajo taco and it was quite delicious. My only criticism is of the service, granted I was there with a large group, but my water glass was never refilled the entire time I was there. The waiter also tried to remember the orders of a table of 11 in his head, this lead to some minor mix-ups which were addressed.

Absolutely amazing. Three words: hog jowl tacos. I almost died they were so freaking good. It makes me wish I lived closer to Provo. Almost. We decided to go last minute one Friday and so we made the trek down there from SLC without any reservations. The place is pretty small but we were still able to get a seat within 10 minutes. There were 4 of us and we decided to divide and conquer and share all our food. We started with 2 orders of the hog jowl tacos which as state before are divine. Do not go without get these! I don't eat anything pickled and I gobbled up the whole thing including the pickled jicama slaw. We also ordered a bottle of their gorgeous pink cactus pear lemonade which was delicious. A completely unique taste not overly sweet or bitter. We then got the special of the day which was braised venison loin with figs, polenta cakes, & asparagus. Personally I thought the venison was a little dry but everyone loved it. The sauce was amazing as we're the polenta cakes. We also got the trio of Navajo tacos. All three of which were scrumptious but my favorite was the red chilie beef. It was all plenty of food for four hungry adults. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. Friendly staff, a view in to the kitchen, and delicious food. They need to open a location in SLC. Also I love that the owners are women.

Stopped in just before they closed for lunch and I'm glad I made it. I opted for the bruschetta topped with hummus. A very large piece of Navaho bread topped with a large spread of hummus and roasted red peppers. It really made for a great combination and worked wonderfully with the flavor and texture of the bread. Loved the menu selection and will be heading back to try one of their dinner options next. The service was good and the staff was helpful. Very much worth the trip to eat at the black sheep.

Great food, better service! Everything was top notch, our server (Jeffrey) was full of great tips and insights into the menu, making our experience easy and enjoyable. We were very impressed at the amazing quality of each dish. We split the Caprese and it was a clean start to our meal. The ingredients were fresh and wonderfully proportioned. The we had the Buffalo Nickel and Hog Jowl. Absolutely amazing how each ingredient complimented the rest. Jeffrey allowed us to substitute street corn for fries and we were pleased as this may have been the best corn on the cob I have tasted to date! We will be back!

I picked the wrong week to go here because I was trying to lose weight (as usual) and was off of carbs. Native American cuisine is typically fairly carb heavy. My co-worker's Navajo taco looked amazing. I was stuck with a burger without the bun but I have to say it was a buffalo burger and was very well prepared. I had some delicious asparagus spears as a side. Service is relatively slow but they do warn you up front that it is all prepared to order and that takes a bit of time. And yes it is pricey, but it is worth it for the uniqueness, the ambience, the attentiveness of the servers, and the fact that it is not a chain!

This is my new favorite restaurant in Provo. Everything is full of flavor and tastes amazing. The buffalo burger melts in your mouth and the pork tacos are divine. The staff and ambience are very classy. Overall, this is the perfect place to go for a special occasion. You won't be disappointed.

Don't get the cactus lemonade. It tastes like country crock pink lemonade. The buffalo nickel was a descent burger, but nothing to be excited about. The pork yaw tacos were good, but I would recommend going to oteo instead if you want to pay that much for south western cuisine.

I ordered the Black Sheep Burger, and was very impressed. At first I thought putting the burger on flat bread was a bad idea, but turns out it works well and wasn't messy at all. It's on the small side, but wasn't packed mid-afternoon on a Saturday. Overall, I left quite impressed.

We didn't even get to eat here because they are so horribly unorganized. We went in and asked for a table, they said come back in 20 minutes, which we did, and were told it would be another 15 minutes. We come back 15 minutes later, walking in right after a family which they promptly seated at what should have been our table. They tell us it will be another 20 minutes. We leave, walk around the corner, and eat at Bruges.

Very cute place. I really enjoyed my meal here... the sweet potato fries w/chipotle mayo (actually made with sweet potatoes which I normally don't LOVE but these were great), the green chile tacos on fry bread, the lamb burger (which was a bit overcooked for my liking), and the filet mignon bruschetta which... I didn't think I'd be into but it was probably my favorite dish. It's sort of ragu-y but with a lot of basil which made it taste very light. Great addition to the city.

Quaint and yummy. The sweet potato fries are a sure thing. The Navajo tacos tasty and filling, the soup delicious. The only thing I would really like to see is some type of appetizer served for free (popcorn, bread) while you are waiting for your food. It can take awhile to come since everything is made fresh.

Excellent food and an intimate dining experience made this an excellent lunch!! I had the Bleu burger and although it was a bit messy, it was delicious!! The Southwest cuisine offers a unique menu list not found anywhere else in Utah County I can find, and the price is amenable.

We ate here as a large group after a wedding. I got a burger. It was really good, but not good enough for what was paid for it. I got the cactus pear lemonade that I had read rave reviews about: meh. Not worth it. We also got some fry bread and sweet potato fries. The fries were SO greasy! Like gross greasy. Our server was not that great. He took forever to do anything (ie bring out drinks, come back to take orders, refill drinks, etc) and he wasn't very good at anticipating our needs with a baby. Luckily there was a girl who worked there (maybe a hostess) who kept popping up asking about highchairs, kids menus, extra napkins, etc. because our waiter was clueless. I didn't pay for the meal, so I can't be too disappointed. But I definitely wouldn't come back unless someone was paying for me again.

Lately I've been a connoisseur of the Green Chile Stew. The flavor is similar to the GC Navajo Taco, rich in flavor with pull-apart pork (comes with fry bread or flatbread on the side). If you're cutting carbs, counting calories, or wanting something lighter yet filling (what?!?) The grilled yellow pepper on the side is for looks (that's what my servers have said and I agree after I bit into one; not gross but lacking in flavor). My husband seems to order the hog jowl tacos on a regular basis, but they sometimes run out for the day so don't be surprised. Drinks: The Brigham Brew Rootbeer I like has a black licorice flavor on the backend. The Cactus Pear Lemonade comes in a tall bottle they leave at your table for refilling and sharing (ask for extra glasses); it reminds me of Crystal Light. The Crio Brü hot cocoa is creamy and comes set on fire (impressive presentation). The lunch and dinner menus are different. A lot of the lunch items aren't available at dinner. The dinner menu has enough choices that you won't miss the lunch options (LOVE the lunch pork sandwich and goat burger). Try the habanero citrus creme brûlée (I don't like hot spice but I like this dessert). My mouth just watered typing that. They take reservations: so refreshing! Make sure your entire party is present to be seated.

While a lot of people will complain about the wait, I'm just happy to know my food is being prepared fresh! This place has some of the tastiest food around. I absolutely love the Goat Burger! The portobello mushrooms are the perfect touch. They also have great salads, bruschetta and tasty drinks. Love this place so much.

The Navajo tacos and fry read are really amazing, but the service is sooooo slow, and frankly not great. We waited for 20 min at lunchtime before anyone came to see if we were ready to order and another 40 min before we got out food. My dish was missing one of the ingredients, so I had to ask the waitress for a side of it. Ten minutes later I asked her again as she was walking by and she kind of snapped at me saying, "It's coming!" Harrumph. It's also uncomfortably chilly in the restaurant. Good food--bad service.

I'm in love with this place. First of all, the drinks they make with pear cactus juice (I think?) are fantastic - especially the alcoholic ones. Their red Navajo tacos are great, but there are times that the fry bread underneath gets soggy and loses its purpose as a vessel for the pile of goodness on top. Probably left to sit a bit too long. Their shrimp with polenta appetizer is to die for. It's a smaller portion than we're used to for an appetizer in the U.S. but the flavor leaves us feeling satisfied. My husband and I love their burgers. My favorite is the Goat burger and his is the blue cheese. But most of all...the hog jowl tacos are to. Die. For. Indescribable. Just go taste it for yourself. Really, you can't go wrong at Black Sheep Cafe, especially if you're a more adventurous eater than the average Utahn.

One of Provo's best. One time I went there and we had to wait too long, my friend contacted them on facebook and they brought us back, completely on the house. They didn't even let us tip! Really great service every time since, and always fantastic food.

I always heard so many good things about Black Sheep Cafe, but I'm giving it 2 stars because the service is HORRIBLE. My boyfriend and I got there at 7pm on Tuesday night. We waited about 15 minutes before our waiter came to our table. Mean while, the host got us water and and lemonade. Finally the waiter came to our table, we had enough time to look at the menu. My boyfriend said we were ready to order, but was interrupted by the waiter saying we should wait to hear about the specials. Okayyy We ordered an appetizer and a side of the sweet potato fries, that took until 7:30 or 7:45 to come out. After that, we waited another 20 to 30 minuets for out entrées. Tacos and a chimichanga. Mind you, two pretty girls walked in and were greeted right away and had their entrées within 15 minuets. The food was good. Not the best. Finally, took about 10 minutes to get the check..I'm a waitress and I tip purely off of service, and I feel bad doing so, but .45 cents was worth my experience.

This is a classic example of Provo kids working themselves into frenzy over nothing. The food is just so average. The service is so average. The ambiance is nothing special. But they have managed to brand themselves as a hipster joint, and so the masses of provo kids come herding in. I will never go back because I can get average enchiladas at any number of restaurants for less than half the price.

This place has delicious, unique, quality food. I love eating here, but I haven't gone back for awhile because the last time they wouldn't take a reservation for 4 people (reservations have to be for over 6 people). So when we arrived, they said the wait would be 2 hours! Terribly ridiculous they wouldn't take our reservation. I am not sure what kind of restaurant turns people down because of a smaller party size. How ridiculous is it to have to wait in a lobby with no seating for two hours because we have 2 less people than they would prefer for a reservation?! They seem to switch up the menu every once in awhile. The last time I went they had one navajo taco dish versus the choice of 3 they had originally, which I think is one of their stronger dishes. If they still have that on the menu, definitely try it at least once.

This was my second time here. The food was delicious as before, but the service was so atrocious it was almost comical. There were two servers and a hostess working the floor. I didn't interact with one server much, but I would swear our server and the hostess were stoned. I'll save you the play-by-play story that some people like to give here, and cut to the highlights. The hostess, although greeted us fairly promptly, then took forever trying to set up a 6 top with the other stoned server. They tried like 3 different configurations of tables. Any of them could have worked. When she finally did come to seat us, she said "Right this way" and then almost went through the kitchen. We didn't know whether to follow her or not. And for our server, he would just awkwardly hang around and stare after asking us how it is or if there was anything else? I would answer the question and he would still be there staring. Here is my FAVORITE part, though -- They have tableclothes on the tables, but they don't change them! That is one reason it took so long to set up the 6-top-they were wiping down the table cloth and spot cleaning it with a damp rag. Unsuccessfully, I might add. We got one of the tables they didn't use and there was a big grease spot under my Dad's fork. I asked for a 2nd napkin and laid it down over the spot to save time. But really? If you go with linens, either change them or cover them with paper. If don't want that expense, go with a had top surface you can wipe! The restaurants attempt to be upscale with linens, backfired (and then some) by having grease stains on the table for new guests.

The food is soooo yummy. BUT it took 2.5 hours for the food to come out. I kid you not. They gave us complimentary dessert for waiting so long, and we were understanding. Next time maybe I should call in my order ahead of time.. like 3 hours ahead of time.

  • Dave B.

The food presentation is spectacular but I haven't been wowed by the overall experience. My dishes have been under cooked but the ingredients were fresh. Waits are longer than average even when the place isn't busy. The main complaint I have is the auto charge 18% gratuity after service has been less than helpful and the wait was long. With that said I'll probably be back soon.

I thought it yummy, but my husband and I both agree it wasn't worth the money. Though delicious, we could be satisfied spending less elsewhere. We both really enjoyed the cactus pear lemonade.

This restaurant used to my boyfriend and I's favorite restaurant in Utah county. Then disaster struck. We walked into the restaurant, sat down, looked at the menu, and walked out. Why? Not because the food isn't good. We left because they doubled their prices and removed important items from the dinner menu, including the burgers. Black Sheep Cafe lost at least 3 customers, but I am confident that friends and family are following.

This might be my new favorite restaurant. I was so impressed with the food and the open ambiance. First of all: expect to wait a bit longer for your food. Our server made sure that we were aware that they scratch-make everything in the kitchen, and they only make to order, so things might take a bit longer than normal. Totally cool. I appreciated the server letting us know. My only advice: if you know it's going to take a bit longer to serve us our food, be sure to be attentive while we wait. Our water glasses and sodas took a while to get refilled. Not a huge issue. But still. Also, our server got overwhelmed by a bridal shower or something towards the end of our meal, and we were pretty much ignored and had to get up and find a hostess to pay. The food here is creative, fresh, delicious, and still founded on Black Sheep's roots: Navajo cuisine. My wife's green chile navajo taco was the star of the show. The pork was ridiculously tender, and the chile had wonderful flavor. I had the pork chop sandwich, and it was fantastic as well. Instead of serving on standard bread, they serve it in their housemade flatbread. Kind of if a pita and a tortilla had a little too much to drink one night and.....you know....here comes lovechild. The sweet potato fries were very different than I was expecting, in a very good way. I'm used to restaurants using nuclear orange yams and calling them sweet potatoes. But Black Sheep uses actual sweet potatoes. These fries are cut thick and are either oven-baked or pan fried (or both), but they had a lovely consistency and flavor. A buddy had the burger, and it looked like an excellent choice as well. Also served on the pita/tortilla lovechild. If you live in Salt Lake, this place is definitely worth the drive down to Provo. I can't wait to come up with an excuse to go back down.

I first became aware of 'Black Sheep' when my wife came home with 'Goat Burger' leftovers. She wanted me to try it (although she was only willing to part with a small bite) and it changed my life :) I don't say this lightly, but Black Sheep IS my favorite place! I wish I could leave a review that goes to 11. I personally haven't experienced a spread quite like it; the Native American influence is evident and tastes amazing! Their take on traditional menu items is completely unique. I suggest ordering adventurously. I probably spent more than I needed to on my first meal, but I had to try everything that looked intriguing (which was a lot). I was there for Dinner and had the Green Chili Fries (Freets?), Hog Jowl Tacos and Cactus Fruit Lemonade. This is truly a 'You have to try it to get it' sort of place. + great staff and ambiance!!

Dinner was smaller menu than previous visits, higher prices, smaller portions. Maybe they have loyal enough customer base to sustain this... $20 enchiladas is more than I'm used to paying in New York or San Francisco. Food quality still excellent. Service this visit was slow.

  • Jordan S.

I love Black Sheep Cafe and we have been here several times! Unfortunately on our latest visit today we noticed that they increased the prices $3-$5 on most items and cut down on the portions at the same time so be aware of this when you go in. Prices on yelp as of 12/13/14 are the old prices. I'm giving them 3 stars because of the price increase and portion size reduction.

I came here two days in a row and both times my burger came out undercooked. They flavor however was great. I was told that they were training a new chef. I'm hoping that was that case because I'm really rooting for this place!

Tried this place out for date night and loved it! The food is absolutely incredible. I don't think you can go wrong no matter what you order. We had the Navajo Taco and the Fillet Mignon and they were incredible. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants now. Also the cactus pear lemonade is wonderful. The service was great as well, our waiter gave great recommendations, and we were not disappointed. Highly recommend this place.

Rich and earthy food in kind proportions is all this place is about. The cuisine is a simplistic fusion of Navajo (how cool is that?), Mexican and New American ingredients. We started with the Shrimp over Blue Corn Polenta and were instantly excited - imagine Shrimp & Grits done Southwest style. The flavors were balanced well and the heat of the Chili Oil was noticeable, but not overpowering. I wish it came with 4 Shrimp instead of 2 because I would order it as an entree if it did. For mains my husband had the Chimichangas and I had the Enchiladas with creamy verde sauce. The dishes are quite large and make outstanding leftovers. Pork filling was perfectly cooked, moist, gently seasoned. The presentation is upscale modern, but the flavors are good, not gringo. Particularly memorable was the bright flavor of the lime cilantro rice which was warm and tender. On the side we split the famed Navajo bread (based on a recipe from the owners/chef's mom) and some Asparagus, perfectly done. Alcohol selection is typical Provo (sorry, I am an out of towner) but we were astonished to see we could split a bottle of wine, so we did. Our dear waitress admitted she had never opened a bottle of wine in her life and had some trouble, but I was not unhappy with her at all. It definitely wasn't her fault. I do think it's worth the staff being trained for bottle opening and presentation, as that is always the hallmark of an excellent establishment, which I feel this place is. The content of the bottle (a South American red blend) was adequate, but WAY soft on the alcohol. We weren't even buzzed by the time we finished it. We also felt a little rushed through with service, as it seems that's the demand of the average clientele or something. We really wanted to stay and finish our bottle, but I guess this crowd isn't used to that. More protein options on the menu would also be appreciated, as I found it to be mighty heavy on the pork.

A 4 top, a 2 top and a single waiting to be seated. I saw the 4 top walk in 15 minutes before me. 6 empty tables in the restaurant, inexcusable. I'll try again later and update the score.

Wanted to eat here a few times before reviewing. And each visit was excellent. Such a fantastic menu and fusion of flavors. The service was great, too. I've had the Navajo tacos and a few soups. Unlike anything you'll find anywhere else. I take out of town visitors here and they talk about it long after. Try the prickly pear lemonade too. Only downside is it's kind of small and as weird gets out it's going to get hard to get in without long waits.

The food here was so AMAZINGLY good!! I was staying in Provo for work and found this place while I was getting my cardio done! My co-worker and I went there for dinner, I had the chimichanga relleno special, which was INSANE! We also had the green chile frites which were just salty enough. I also enjoyed the Naughty Palmer cocktail! We ended up going back there again the next night!

Went out to dinner with my family who had been raving about how AMAZING the food was so I figured I was in for a real treat. Upon entering and being seated we were able to place our orders fairly quickly but after about 30 minutes after receiving our appetizers we realized that not one table around us had any food on their tables! We were the last people to be seated! Needless to say after an HOUR and a HALF with not one word from our waitress we finally got up to ask what the hell was going on and she said that it was a new chef in the kitchen and that they were having a hard time. I figured that our meal would have been generously discounted on account of all that was lacking but NO. They offered my family (5 of us) one chocolate mousse to split. My husbands steak was overcooked but we dared not send it back, he may have starved otherwise. The salmon was good but definitely not worth the price tag or wait time. Service was laughable. Our drinks were never refilled and not once did our waitress come to inform us of why it was taking so long or to see if we needed anything, Would absolutely NOT recommend and will not be back.

Well, what can I say but this place is amazing. I heard about this place from a couple of fellow Yelp people and at first I dismissed it because it was down in Provo, but I take back everything I might have previously thought. Black Sheep Cafe is a must try restaurant for anyone in the Salt Lake City area. Located in downtown Provo, Black Sheep Cafe can be described as an American Indian fusion restaurant with Navajo tacos. We (4 people) went on a week night and it was still packed. We started off with their Cactus Pear Lemonade that was amazing. I did not get an adult drink this time, but their wine menu looked great as did their mixed drinks. We were not super hungry so we decided to get a bunch of small plates and share. We got the Hog Jowl Tacos to start off with, Navajo Taco trio, and a another specialty dish that is not on the menu. I have to say my favorite was the appetizer. The hog jowl tacos were amazing to say the least. There was just the right amount of meat on the taco along with some fixings. The meat was juicy and the jalapeño slice perfected the taco. Then we had the Navajo Taco trio that comes with red chile beef, green chile pork, and the last one has pinto beans. These were so tasty and the taco soaked up the chile and meat juices. When I go back, I will probably stick with the red chile beef Navajo taco as it was my favorite. Finally, we order a special item that was a plum reduction with asparagus and steak. The reduction was fabulous even though it did not really match the other food. Next time I go back I will definitely order the hog jowl tacos, the red chile beef Navajo taco, and I want to try one of the burgers, particularly the pork burger. The bathrooms are clean, the parking is on the street, the bar is full, and the service was impeccable. The server was able to answer all of the questions we had and knew everything including the ingredients very well. The owner was even there when we visited and looked to be directing everything very well. PS: Check out the shop with indigenous art work that is in the lobby.

I've been here several times and I have not one bad thing to say about this place. Not one. Everything is delicious. The salads are good. The burgers are good; I love that the burgers are placed on folded-over nanniskadii bread, it keeps everything in it's place. The soups are good; the Green Chile Stew is incredibly comforting. And oh the corn and sweet potato fries! I haven't even mentioned the Navajo tacos; the Green Chile Pork one is my favorite, but you really can't go wrong. The enchiladas and the chimichanga are both very filling and so delicious. The Cactus-Pear Lemonade is so refreshing and one of my all-time favorite drinks. The desserts, again, can't go wrong. I tried the Pumpkin Bread-Pudding with Amano Chocolate Chips; incredible. Oh this place, I can't even... P.S. - They used to serve breakfast and I strongly request that they bring it back.

Finally got to check this place out for myself, and was pleasantly surprised. I've heard this place was really good from friends and the positive reviews on Yelp. The food is an "Americanized" version of everyday food you would find in a typical Navajo home on the Reservation. The Navajo Taco's are not bland at all, the fry bread was cooked golden brown and crisp, the pinto bean chili was a little spicy but still very delicious. The pork chop sandwich was full flavor, served on nannaskadi (flour tortilla) the boneless pork chop was well seasoned and very juicy. The spring mix and tomato were a refreshing addition to the sandwich instead of the typical iceberg lettuce. The layout and decor was nice and simple, spacious and not crowded. Give this place a try, I think you'll like it. I will definitely go back again.

Yelp! led my friend and I to the Black Sheep Cafe last week when we were in Provo and I am so grateful that it did! What an awesome restaurant. We were seated immediately and greeted by our waiter, Gibson, who handed us menus and talked a little bit about The Black Sheep. He was very up front about the fact that because our food was made to order from scratch there would be a wait. We didn't mind, and proceeded to peruse the lunch menu. A word of advice: do NOT skip the cactus pear lemonade in favor of water or soda. It is a Black Sheep original, and it is hot pink, and it is amazing. Gibson brought the lemonade out to us in a bottle and visited our table often to refill our glasses. My friend and I ordered two different kinds of Navajo tacos, and when they arrived it became immediately apparent by their toothsome appearance that they were worth waiting for. The frybread was delicious and came bathed in chile (red for my friend, green for me), lettuce, veggies, and a very generous portion of cubed pork. We both ate with gusto and I was full for the rest of the day. I wish the Black Sheep Cafe was located in SLC so I could go every day! As it is, I'll definitely be incorporating it into my rotation of Provo restaurants and look forward to trying other menu items in the future.

The food was ok. Nothing too great, nothing terrible. The hostess was a mess, she kept trying to help the waiters (maybe for a kick back?) but lacked training and it showed. I watched her clean off tables and set them up. She had long hair and her hair was brushing the plates, silverware and glasses. YUCK. Then she brought us our lemonade, she held the glasses up to her chest to try and hold the 2 glasses and lemonade by pressing them up against her body...and you guessed it, her hair. GROSS. Then she poured the lemonade, spilled it all over my husbands side of the table, apologized and rushed off (I figured to grab a towel or something) nope. Just went and cleared off another table leaving us to clean up the sticky spill. Then she brought out my husbands food, again with the hair brushing the plate. We were in a hurry so we avoided the hair area. Then we saw a hair in the food. So we left. I told our waiter and showed her the hair, she adjusted that plate off. We won't be going back. We are weird "anti hair in your food" people.

I have been wanting to come here for a long time but I live in Boise, Idaho. Finally got the chance today. I had the Hog Jowl tacos with lime rice and black sheep pinto beans with a side of Sweet potato fries. Dessert was cactus pear and raspberry cheesecake. The food was amazing. They really knocked it out of the park. If I was basing my review just on the food, it would be five stars. Unfortunately, we waited to be seated for a long time, and we waited for our food for a long time. We spent about an hour and 45 minutes there for a table of two. But I would definitely come back when I'm in town again.

Good tasting food. I've been here 3 times. Lately the service has gotten really bad. I called to check wait times, was told that they do not accept reservations for parties less than 6. I was told that for my date and I it would be 15-20 minutes wait, I arrived and was told to wait for an hour. The host tried to tell me that the food was so good that it was worth the wait. We left and won't be returning. Any restaurant owner with a brain would allow reservations for two. If they don't show then they can just give the table to the next couple in line, it's not rocket science.

  • Brandon H.

I was really dissatisfied. The service was really slow. I ordered a $30 steak off their special menu and asked for it to be cooked "medium" and it came clearly well done. The server took it back to the chef and we could hear him deny that it was over cooked and respond really rudely about me thinking it wasn't cooked right. The server came back and told me there was nothing he could do. I would guess 30 bucks for a steak and 6 bucks for lemonade would come with a little bit more of a satisfaction guarantee.

The food is great, that's why I went back. I'm on business trip here in Provo, I went there by myself planed to enjoy a nice meal and a drink. I walked in before 6pm, the restaurant was half empty. The waiter looked at the "half empty" restaurant and told me the wait time will be 30-45 mins. Period. No explanation what so ever. I guess he saw something I didn't?!

Tried it for the first time today and I was not impressed at all. I had the green chili Navajo Taco. It was where are you to salty and the bread part of it tasted like old grease. For as busy as this place seems to be, I was really surprised how bad it was. The salad was quite good but the entree was bad, and for the price I have to give it only 1 star.

    (1)
  • Joseph M.

The food is great, but the constant price increases and service ruin it for me. I understand that all the food is made from scratch, but why do I have to wait twenty minutes to place my order? Why is it that, with a half-empty restaurant and no one waiting, there is always an hour wait? I can't even get in the door on a weeknight, let alone a weekend!

I love this place. This is my third time here. I come when I'm in town for work. I love the fry bread with braised meat. This time I had the braised red chile beef. It's kind of like an open faced taco on really thick pita bread. The server was excellent. He answered all of my questions. The atmosphere is on the quiet side with kind of rustic chic decor. The portion was more than enough. The entree came with really good beans that had a bit of spice to them and an interesting white rice. This is a great place to go on a date or celebrate an occasion with a small group. It is a small place. If you have more than 4 in your party I would call ahead.

I would rate this place an A for effort, B for execution, and C (or even D) for service. We tried the goat burger (I loved it but my wife made a sour face when she tasted the goat cheese that was stuffed in the meat patty), the Navajo taco (pretty good but just average), and the pork chop sandwich (interesting but probably wouldn't try again). The sweet potato fries that came with the meals were different but not exactly in a good way. I liked the idea but they were soft and soggy. I prefer cripsy, thin sweet potato fries (go to Guru's a block away). First the food. I like the idea of trying unique dishes that you can't find at any restaurant (part of the reason I like Guru's just down the next block on Center St). Any time you see something like goat cheese on the menu, you know you're not at your typical restaurant. I also like how you take something simple like a burger and turn it into a new experience by adding unique flavors and putting it on pita bread instead of a bun. This is where the restaurant shines. The flavors are strong and unique. That's about where the good review ends. Price: about what I would expect from a restaurant offering something out of the ordinary, but I don't think it was worth it. Service: I should have read reviews before sitting down since we were short on time the night we ate at Black Sheep Cafe. We were quickly seated and handed menus but then it took several minutes after our drink order (water) to receive our drinks. Then it took another 10 minutes or so to take our order and another 15 minutes or more to receive our food. If you're not in a hurry and you want to try some unique food, then eat here. If you're in a hurry, don't even think about it. Then let's talk about our awkward waitress. When she would come to our table, we weren't sure if she wanted to talk or just listen to our conversation. She would hover and just wait until we would all stop talking and make eye contact with her. Then she would make strange comments and repeated back our order as if she were applying for a Hollywood acting position with Yoda. Not all the waiters were this strange, but she affected our meal in a negative way. There are so many unique and ethnic dining choices around this area in Provo that we probably won't choose to eat here again soon. I wouldn't be opposed to eating here if friends suggested it, but if I'm choosing where to eat I'll go somewhere else first.

I ended up here not too long ago for one of my occasional Utah county lunches. It seems rather inconspicuous on the outside, but on the inside they're serving some wonderful southwestern delights. I was pleased. It was a group of six. I ordered a Navajo taco (verde, please) and others order the enchiladas, the Navajo taco sampler and PORK CHOP SANDWICHES! (Search Youtube for that last one if you're confused about my reaction.) I sipped some brewed cocoa while we waited for our food, because it seemed like the proper Utah County thing to do. (For the record, it was better than coffee, but tea is still my preferred hot drink.) And wait we did, for quite a long time. Made fresh and whatnot, I know. It's a good thing I wasn't in a hurry. If you're looking for anything but a leisurely meal, maybe avoid this spot. But the food finally did come, and it was so worth the wait. That Navajo taco was like magic in my mouth and I think I have had very pleasant dreams about it since my visit to Black Sheep. It's probably a good thing that I'll have to go to Provo to experience the magic again, because otherwise I would have been there five or six times by now and maybe the magic would have started to wear off. The others gave rave reviews of their dishes as well, and from my samples of them I must agree. Service could have been a bit better, and I'm not just talking about the long wait for the food. Our server was quite attentive on the rare occasion she made it to our table, but this was not too often. Prices are on the high side, but I'll pay for fresh ingredients. Overall, I was quite pleased with things and will try to come back soon for some more mouth magic. (That sounds dirty.)

I came here today under the impression that the food is really good and the place has a cool atmosphere... I was sorely mistaken. The food I ordered was over cooked and when I complained, I could hear the server getting yelled at by the chef. Talk about unprofessional... If you are gonna yell at your servers at least make sure your customers can't hear you. When they came back with my over cooked food they said that the chef wouldn't change it, and so i was left with a gross over cooked expensive meal. I did enjoy their sweet potato fries but that's about it. I don't recommend their steak because it isn't seasoned well enough to make up for its dry and over cooked texture. I don't plan on coming here ever again. The chef was so rude and doesn't know how to treat his customers.

I really liked the cactus lemonade. The pazole was too salty, but I finished it because I have no shame. The frybread was outstanding. I could almost taste the oppression. The taco was really nice. The rice was either moist or wet. I can't say which. The cheesecake was okay. Kenny was our waitperson. He was pretty awesome, but never call him Ken, or he will put extra jalapenos in your creme brulee.

Am I the only one who HATES this place? Looks like it based on the ratings. To be fair, I have given this establishment 3 separate tries. Why I hate it: * The service is terrible: As in the servers are not friendly. You have to ask to get your water refilled. If you say you need a minute with the menu, good luck getting your order taken. * They give you a hard time if you want to leave off tomatoes: or any other ingredient for that matter. One of my girlfriends is allergic to tomatoes. I know seems fake right, but it's not. When we ordered and she asked for no tomatoes she was told "The Chef won't prepare it that way". We had to go on to tell them it's not a disdained for tomatoes, it's a health issues. They server then had to go ask the chef if he would prepare it that way... which he didn't want to do, until we said that we would leave, since its physically impossible for her to eat tomatoes. * I T I S S O S L O W : I work around the corner and people often suggest black sheep for lunch. The problem is you can't get in an out fast enough. On one occasion we were 6 coworkers for a birthday lunch- we were there almost 2 hours. It was a nightmare, that we couldn't get out of. * The food is just "pretty good". For all the other challenges the quality and the taste of the food just doesn't make up for it.

I've always loved this place but their prices have gone up and portions down. $20 is too much for two tiny enchiladas and slow, slow service.

Driving through Provo to SLC, it was 1:30 in the afternoon and we were starving. I saw this place on Yelp and we stopped in. First of all...this restaurant is VERY small. You can almost always expect to wait, but when we walked in the host apologized and said it would be a 30 minute wait. We saw that there was a table with 18 people (a work group of some sort) that was just seated. The host explained that the chef makes every dish individually and so the wait.....We decided to wait, but others who walked in after us left. We were seated in about 20 minutes and our server, Elias, immediately came to get our drink orders and to once again apologize for the wait. I am sooooooo glad we stayed!!! This place was the epicurean hit of our 2 week trip! The menu is described as Southwest Native American food. I read that the Navajo tacos are a favorite, so I ordered the red chili beef taco...served on delicious fry bread. In a word: YUM. My husband tried the Black Sheep burger served with fire roasted chilis and also served on fry bread. The portions are large...be prepared! The flavors and aromas were familiar and yet new and different. An added plus was the ability to see the chef creating in the open kitchen. Excellent service, excellent food...I only wish we lived closer.....

Black Sheep Cafe has great food. Shared the Navajo taco (which was much smaller than expected) but it was great. Also tried the sweet potato fries which were different but good. The waiter was a little weird but all of the food we had was great and I love the feel of the restaurant. Would absolutely return.

I was actually impressed with the food. It was surprisingly good! I had the "Goat burger" a hamburger with goat cheese. Flavors were great and just overall good food. A little pricey than other places but I liked what I ate. The only thing that I didn't like was that the service was very slow. Took forever to get our food. But I was satisfied.

Been there many times. This time we had a cactus pear cheese cake that was the only one in the world, I think. We just came back from NY and this was so delicious that we had to close our eyes. Who would ever think Provo.

Black Sheep Cafe is thee place for 'Date Night' in Utah Valley. Its the only fine dining restaurant in the area suitable for a romantic date. (Communal up the street would be a candidate, but you have to share a table with strangers. Hardly romantic.) The service has been excellent every time I have been. The food is amazing. Its so different from the norm here in U.V. Its nice to mix it up a bit. Try the Cactus Pear Lemonade.

My second visit to the place and I was pleased once again! We had the hog jowel tacos for an appetizer and they were incredible! So much flavor from the little tacos. I had the sampler Navajo taco plate for my meal and was not disappointed. Deserts were comforting and sizeable as well. Over all a great experience. The wait is longer but and the price higher but I think it is well worth it. I want to go back again soon for more tacos!

The Black Sheep upscaled the Navajo Taco. I had the green verde pork one. Mmmm. A lowbrow woman such as myself could give up her life of velveeta and hormel for that. My husband claims the hamburger is the best in Utah county. The fresh iced tea was tea-rrific.

Okay, I just ate here tonight. Honestly some of the best food I've had in a long time. Worth the wait. As other reviewers have said, it takes awhile for the orders to come. I was content to just sit and talk. The atmosphere is nice. I thought the service was excellent. Our waitress was very nice, genuine, and had good recommendations. I'll be going back. If I were to recommend a dish, it'd be the triple Navajo taco sampler. I was hungry, and I didn't finish half of it. You could easily share it between two people. Check it out!

First off, the food is fantastic. I've been here 5 times, and I've never been disappointed. The Black Sheep Burger is not your typical hamburger - it's on flatbread. Pork Chop sandwich kills - also on flatbread. The Navajo Tacos are truly unique. Flavors are perfect - just a little bit of spice, nice kick, plenty of uncomplicated flavors. The food is fantastically fresh. The ambiance is unique. The floor took some getting used to, but I really like the setting. Now, the bad. Their kitchen takes way too long to prepare food. I've been going here for months, and each time they are slower and slower. The most recent visit today took 1 hour and 15 minutes to get our food. They were busy, but this is unacceptable. I love freshly prepared food, but it should not have taken this long with 3 cooks. Also, we had one child with us, and his food was brought last, at a table of 7. I was actually finished with my food by the time he was served. The service could be better as well. It doesn't seem like anyone really runs the front of the house. Our waiter may have checked on us 3 times during the 1 hour and 15 minute wait for food. I decided to give them a 3 anyway, because I fee like the food is that excellent, the ambiance is great, but they really need some work in the back of house and on their service. Also, the manager was very apologetic for our last visit, and gave us a discount for being slow and serving the food sporadically. I hope they can pull it together, because I'd give them a 5 if their service was in order.

If I could give it no stars I would! Absolutely horrible service! I went about a year ago, food was good, a little pricey but good. Slow as snail snot going uphill in December! Took 2 hours for our orders to arrive after we ordered, but the food was good so whatever. Went last night as a walk in, was told first that we could be seated and served if we could be out in an hour and 15 minutes. Then, after the hostess talked to Chef we were told that it wouldn't be possible to serve us at all that night as we had arrived an hour and a half before their next reservation. You can imagine my confusion. There was a reservation an hour and a half from now and you can't seat us because of it?? I drove an hour to eat here! But because they couldn't manage to serve 3 people in an hour and 15 minutes, it was a no go. Ergo, because of their glacial pace in the kitchen they couldn't manage it. When I asked her to pass along my displeasure to her manager she said I could talk to her myself as she was seated at one of the tables. What the WHAT?! On a busy night the manager was sitting at a table taking up space and kitchen capacity. Mind=blown. I emailed the restaurant and all I got was "Unfortunately, we were at capacity with walk-ins and the rest of the floor was reserved for the evening at the time you arrived. May I ask how you came to the conclusion that the manager was seated at a table?" That was the entirety of their response, word for word. It seems that all they were concerned about is HOW I found out the manger was sitting and eating at a table. No apology, nothing. Did I mention there were 3 empty tables? and that an hour and a half later as we walked by after finishing a very satisfactory meal elsewhere on center street, there were 5 empty tables. Completely. blown. away. How do they manage to sucker people into coming back??

Black sheep is my new favorite restaurant in Provo. It is good priced, excellent service and delicious food. I have eaten there several times and I highly recommend the Goat burger, it was very juicy and flavorful. They put an interesting, fresh twist on the classic american burger. Black Sheep is some of the best Organic food I've ever had, that doesn't feel too granola. My husband even likes it and he is not a fan of Organic. Black Sheep has something on the menu for everyone. The Cactus-Pear Lemonade was really good, and the Bleu-Fire Shrimp was excellent. I highly recommend Black Sheep.

We loved the ambiance of the restaurant and the eclectic music (Devotchka, Bon Iver). We showed up just in time before a party of 30 arrived, so service was great. Our waiter made great suggestions and took his advice. We started with the Bleu Fire Shrimp, The shrimp was prepared in southwestern spices and grilled to perfection over blue polenta then drizzled with hot chile oil. The hot chile oil on polenta tasted amazing. We had the Green Chile Pork Navajo tacos. The pork was juicy and tender, the green chile was perfect in spice and heat, the spices were perfectly balanced on top of delicious homemade fry bread. I also brought my 4 yr old son, they had a couple of child menu items, however, he wanted the pozole (hominy and pork stew with chile). The menu had a bowl of pozole that was far too much for him so they accommodated him with a smaller cup of pozole with a fry bread, he dipped the fry bread in the broth and absolutely loved it. The food was amazing, the ambiance was great, and the staff were sweet & wonderful. I highly recommend it. Provo was in need of a new "style" of restaurant, this place hits the spot.

Food was bland and the red chili had more bits of fat than meat in it, the waitress was very pretentious and looked at my wife and I with disdain as we told her we wanted water to drink (since we are still trying to keep our new years resolutions) and not the super expensive specialty drinks. It was pricey and if the food had been great, I would've been fine with price...but I enjoy restaurants where I eat something I don't know how to make at home or simply don't have the time to make. Unfortunately neither was the case here, and I will NEVER go back or recommend anyone I know go back there again.

Soup with the fry bread is filling and wholesome. We had pozole and the squash soup. We also had a side of the sweet potato fries which I think are truly sweet potatoes, not yams like everywhere else. So good too. Out server was fine--I hear complaints about the service, but our experience was good. It's a trendy place, which usually means hit and miss with customer service. I love the decor and southwest theme. Subtle and not overdone.

From a perfect eclectic clean atmosphere to helpful knowledgeable staff this place has it all. I feasted upon a double thick cut pork loin that was seared to perfection and retained the juice and flavor of an exceptional piece of pig. The meat was not over spiced with salt and pepper nor was it lacking for texture. This was placed upon a bed of blue corn cheese grits with subtle pops of green Chile. The combination was of divine origin. It also came with a red wine reduction that few restaurants I've ever been to have come close to the masterful presentation and flavor. It was a tangy sweet glaze and was perfectly matched with the pork. The grilled squash was fresh and lightly salted and retained its original flavor texture etc, basically it was not over cooked nor under cooked and could not be done any better than presented. We finished the meal with a Jalapeno orange creme' brulee that was rich creamy not to spicy and had a lovely texture. Based upon the difficulty of that particular dish I have to say" I really think they know what there doing." I ate in a group of 3 others that all had nothing but great things to say about the food. Overall I can not wait to go back and try something new but the memory of that meal will haunt me for eternity as one of the 10 best meals I've had the pleasure to stumble come across. The fresh flowers adorning the place really helped ad to the ambiance. Thank you for the excellent food.

I was visiting Utah with my boyfriend and his family. We went to this restaurant, the cuisine was a interesting south western Indian fusion. I got the red chile tacos, and my boyfriend got the pork jowl tacos, apparently their so called award winning specialty? My boyfriend got food poisoning and had to go to the hospital for a "bacterial" infection. There are clearly some sanitary issues. Not to mention, the manager wasn't very hospitable. The waiter we had was exceptional, he was a look a like from two and a half men. Obviously, someone isn't running a tight shift over there. Wouldn't recommend this place.

Chef Mark Daniel Mason and Sous Chef Dario Cifuentes are fun to watch in the open kitchen as they work their magic. We walked in to this place over 6 months ago and have since then been back numerous times including a beer and food pairing that took place with Uintah Brewery. I will start off with the tasting: Hefeweizen vinaigrette on mixed greens w/ thinly sliced pickled apricot slices, chili verde in spent grain beer wort bread bowls (this was as good as their pasole that I would slap my Mother to get!) followed by mutton (corn feed local) medallions in baba beer sauce and finished off with hands down the best chocolate sauce in my years of existence made with dark chocolate and Labyrinth Black Ale over pastry piped w/ ganache. Salmon tartar that is rich and subtly lace with wonderful herbs. Grilled Quail dish is delightful with traditional Navajo spice served with cotija roasted potatoes spinach and spicy dark mole. Wild pan-seared salmon served with a chipotle glaze, a pickled pepper medley, cotija roasted potatoes and grilled asparagus. Braised wild boat ossobuco with a mixed cheese polenta cake and braised green onions a special that we happened to come across on night. They have a vast array of dishes that are whipped up as specials depending on what is available and the talents of the chefs turning these foods in to new culinary delights is a treasure and surprise unexpected in this quaint little town of Provo. The ambiance is wonderful with good service by a younger college crew. The surroundings are post modern with open pipes and a wood floor from recycled wood that will leave you in awe. Walk in a see Katt hostess and owner and she will take you on a culinary treat ride.

The food was good, not the greatest. The biggest turn off was the length of time it took to get the food. A good 45 min. They did warn us it would be a while, but seriously 45 min? I figured 20 min maybe. It was not worth waiting 45 minutes.

This is my new favorite sit down restaurant! I had he most amazing bleu cheese hamburger on a thin Indian bread and my husband got the enchiladas. The enchiladas were amazing but both of us were fighting over the bleu cheese hamburger. It had a sugared glazed bacon on top of it. It was out of his world. The fried bread was yummy too. This is out new date night spot

I went here for the second time last week and it definitely did not disappoint. Everything that we ordered from the Green Chile Navajo Taco to the Hog Jowl Tacos (a definite must, I could have eaten ten of those) was above and beyond our expectations. The meal was worth every penny and I will certainly be back in the (very near) future.

The food and atmosphere at Black Sheep Cafe is delicious and ultra hip. I would recommend making a reservation as the dining area is limited, creating a warm intimate feel. We skipped appetizers and dove right into the entrees - Navajo Tacos and "Goat" Burgers. Everything is made fresh to order so it does take a little bit longer - but fresh and flavorful food is well worth the wait - so go with a friend or two, and enjoy the company while you notice the simple yet unique decor - from the exposed plywood floors to the art on the walls to the blown glass chandelier in the center of the room. We already have a game plan for our next visit inviting the new flavors Black Sheep Cafe has to offer.

This place is awesome, it has a great atmosphere, really nice staff, and delicious food. I do wish they had more vegetarian options though, about the only thing is the Navajo Taco and some sides. Granted, that taco was amazing, so I can't complain too much. My friends told me their burgers are the best burgers they've ever had.

My husband and I really enjoyed our meal here. I would definitely recommend trying it. I think the price might be a smidge high for what you get but not bad. I really liked my Navajo taco (green chile pork) and my husband enjoyed the goat cheese burger. I agree with other reviewers that the sweet potato fries were slightly soggy but the flavor was still REALLY good. I love the uniqueness of the restaurant. I never would have thought of Navajo tacos as being semi-fancy food....it is just such a neat idea. The ingredients are fresh, the servers are really nice, the atmosphere is great. I am sure we will be back. Oh and a lot of people recommend the cactus pear lemonade so we got it....my husband loved it and I thought it was fine but way too sweet for my taste so just know that it is QUITE sweet (not really any sourness like other lemonades).

SO yummy and fresh! The food is delightful and the atmosphere is charming - and it's all just right down there on University Ave! We especially enjoyed our order of sweet potato fries and I quickly became a fan of all their tacos. The service was polite and fairly prompt (we went on a weeknight and there was only 1 server to take care of 5+ tables of customers, not ideal) and we had an excellent time. Two thumbs up!

First off I'm going to say the night my wife and I went there must to have been a bad night for the black sheep. They were out of almost all of there main dishes which left the choice of food very sparse. The people next to us were also not having a good time. They were so upset about their meals the got up and left half way through their dinner. My wife ordered the taco platter which is supposed to come with the three different meats but they were out of two. I ordered the black sheep burger which was awful. It was the greasiest burger I have ever had. The the plate was so full of grease I couldn't set my burger down with out it swimming in the grease and making it impossible to hold. The flavors were good but the burgers construction was poor and it fell apart after three bites. There was a minor faux pas with the burger too. The burger was cut in half to check to see how done it was... It's a thing inexperienced cooks do and it's a no no in the burger biz. The waitress offered to take the burger off the bill because of had greasy and bad it was but we paid for it anyway. My wife loved her meal, I hated mine. The decor is really nice, the staff were also very nice but it seemed like they over staffed the place. There were waiters just standing, staring at us. I think it was like one waiter per table or something. I'll try to go back when it's not an off night and order something else. It gets three star for the awful burger but good Navajo taco, half the items on the menu not available and a really nice waitress.

Finally something new! I was getting tired of all the same old cuisine around town. This place is like a Bistro you would see in the city. Simple decor, except for the chandelier. Not only is this place a restaurant it also has a silversmith that you can watch as he makes jewelry. If you go for lunch the pork chop sandwhich is a must and from what I have heard around town the green chili stew is a must. I guess I will have to get that the next time.

I was excited to try this place as I always like to find a good local restaurant. We arrived early to beat the rush, which proved to be very smart. We were greeted and seated immediately. We had an idea of what we wanted to try. Our watiress didn't tell us about the specials (Maybe because we looked as if we had already decided). I wish she had because my husband was a little disappointed when he heard what the special was after we had already placed our order. We ordered the Bleu-Fire Shrimp for our appetizer. And wow! It did not disappoint. The seasoning on the shrimp was amazing and the blue polenta complimented it well. We had to wait awhile for our entrees. The restaurant was very busy. This would not deter me from returning, as I think it is just a few kinks in timing, etc that any new restaurant faces. For our entrees I ordered the Enchiladas and was happy to see that I could order them Medium as I like mine a little spicier. My husband ordered the Black Sheep Burger. Let me tell you every minute we had to wait was well worth it. The food was amazing! The enchiladas were delicious and even the beans and rice were fantastic. Often times the accompaniments are just mediocre. It had the perfect heat level and you could tell it had good quality fresh ingredients. My husband enjoyed the burger. He loved that it was wrapped in the flat bread versus a bun. He is not typically a fan of bread but enjoyed the flat bread thoroughly. He got it with the corn but I think would get fries next time. The burger was cooked medium which is a huge plus. We finished off with the Orange-Habanero Creme Brulee. It was wonderful. It was cooked just as it should be and the slight heat from the habanero was perfectly complimentary to the orange. I thought the pricing was fair and average for this area. The atmosphere was clean and surprisingly quiet! The tables seem close together but I never heard my neighbors conversations. We sat at a table by the window and were able to enjoy our conversation and the beauty of downtown Provo. I can't wait to get back and try the Navajo Tacos and the soup!

I've only been here once ---- and had the Squash Soup. It was absolutely delicious! I didn't know what to expect --- but wasn't disappointed! As mentioned on other reviews --- if your in a hurry, this is not the place to go. Wait till you have time to enjoy! The food is well worth the wait --- that's for sure! I'm anxious to try the Navaho Taco! And the Sweet Potato Fries! Next time!

I was looking for something unique to take people when they visit us. Based on the Yelp reviews my husband & I decided to visit Black Sheep, and I am SOOOO glad we did. I got the Navajo Taco, and he had the burger with the chile on it. You can choose your "heat" level. Having never been their before, I didn't add more heat to my taco, and I am glad I didn't. It was spiced perfectly for me. Know that the food will take a little longer to come out... IT'S MADE FRESH, so just expect it. It's worth it for sure. Some people might think pricey, but I thought reasonable for the quality and portion, you won't leave hungry. What a little gem in Historic Provo. I can't wait to go back and try more!

Best food I've had in so long. Perfect place for a date or just to hang with friends. The wings are amazing and the goat burger Is insanely good too. The prices are unbeatable for what you get and the atmosphere is unbeatable oh and it's LOCAL!

i'm so glad to see a restaurant like this in Provo. the food was great. the owners/ people working there were nice and sincere... everything we ordered was great, our almost two year old daughter loved it all as well.. great quality food, not likely to get bored here... we'll be back again and we highly recommend it!!
