We really liked it but not the best. Since it is a Japanese restaurant, my husband loved the pork katsu. He said it was amazing. Completely authentic. I got something of the Korean menu, pork bulgogi which had good flavor but the pork was cut pretty thick to what I'm used to. It was huge portions! The cool thing was that they give you miso soup and salad before your meal and then ice cream after. We came for dinner so I think it was for that, not lunch. The booth was really fun to sit in also. It felt like you were crossing your legs or something at a really Japanese restaurant. Our service was great, they came by and refilled the water plenty of times and asked how everything was. We also felt like it was a really good deal! $30 for a appetizer, two miso soups, two salads, two entrees with a huge portion, and ice cream after. That's pretty awesome!

Don't be fooled by the kinda grungy location and exterior, this place is really cool. The inside is very nice. The takoyaki is delicious and close to that which I've eaten in Japan. The yakisoba didn't really taste authentic, it was the sauce, I wasn't impressed with it. (Minus one star) The sushi was all very good though and they have a stamp card you can use to get a free roll if you get it stamped enough. They were very nice and even gave us all free ice cream at the end. (Star redeemed)

Open on Sundays! Ok food if you are willing to wait and have slow service, they are always understaffed. Half Korean half Japanese menu, more of a fusion place. The Korean does not come with all the side dishes, which is weird, and the sushi is decent. Don't plan on getting refills. The salted mackerel is my order, it's done really well, even though they only serve you pieces instead of the whole fish.

Like other reviews mention, we had very slooooow service. We were seated quickly and got water, but then it was 10 minutes to order, about 30 minutes for food to come, and 5-10 minutes of trying to catch the waitress's attention to get our check. We tried the Yamato Sushi roll which was an excellent choice. A little expensive but very good flavors. Then we had the Pork Cutlet (Tonkatsu) and had enough to take home for leftovers. Do they really think 1 person can eat 2 pork cutlets with a pile of sticky rice? Maybe if we hadn't had sushi as well I could have finished the pork. But the pork was a little dry so I'm glad we had the sauce. If you have time to wait for slow service but want excellent food, give this place a try. You've probably whizzed by it several times as you pass by the Orem mall nearby.

I don't understand the good reviews for the food here. The sushi was terrible, some of the rolls were almost inedible! The Raman had small pieces of boiled chicken floating around and the chicken teriyaki was a mess! The service was slow and unorganized and it seems these people don't know how to run a restaurant. We all felt sick after eating there. I would not recommend this restaurant nor would I ever eat here again!

Where do I start? How about the best value Japanese restaurant in Utah County. $7.95 for Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura, Chicken Teriyaki, salad, miso soup and rice? Really? How about Beef Sukiyaki for under $10? Yes - really! Outstanding service? Oh yah, Yamato is all that and more. They have a great sushi selection, plus a Korean grill right on your table so you can cook your own meat, seafood, and vegetables. My family and I often travel a 40 minute commute from South Jordan just to experience the good food and good service from Yamato. We celebrated my wife's birthday a while back in their private room and it was one of the best experiences we have had for a long time. You just cant overlook their reasonably priced menu to other overpriced Japanese restaurants. A definite diamond in the rough.

Simply the best Japanese around. Unlike most places around here, when you order tea they give you a pot. A pot they will refill. The portions on their non-sushi menu are huge and the prices are great. The staff has always been friendly and eager to please. Try the Yamato crispy, vegetable tempura and some Sukiyaki. HEAVEN. I docked this place one star because sometimes the wait has been atrocious. The food has always been worth it for me though.

Yamato is very yummy and the waitresses are so nice! They are however understaffed and the wait can be long and the service is slow. The price is great though. This last time we went we got two miso soups, a sunset roll, a halibut roll, chicken teriyaki and shrimp tempura and a salad, plus the usual complementary ice cream for dessert, all for $30.00. (Plus tip). Overall its a good experience, I've been here many many times and I have enjoyed everything I've tried. Just go knowing the wait will be long and you will enjoy everything else.

We've been coming here for years. We were quite regulars a dozen years ago. These days it's just because everywhere else is busy and they aren't. There was the day when this was the place to get decent sushi in town. Now we just come once a year hoping things are better. I haven't tracked the chefs here over the years, but things have changed and slowly gone downhill. Each visit the fish is a little less fresh, there are more rolls with lots of mayo, and the tempura batter gets thicker while it gets more soggy. We've finally hit the point where we just won't be able to come back again. At least until somebody I trust says it's back.

So I went here once three years ago and I thought it was pretty great and then I went with my family here a few weeks ago and it was...not as great. I'm not sure what happened I hear it changes hands a lot with different owners so maybe that's what happened or maybe I was overestimating how good it was the first time I don't know. but on this occasion I think the sushi selection was not that great ( tho admittedly most sushi restaurants in Utah don't have a great selection either so I'm not saying this was worse as much as it just belongs on par with many other not great Utah Japanese restaurants). Also I partially chose this place because not everyone in my family likes Japanese food so I thought they might enjoy the other dishes offered. They got teriyaki chicken and salmon dishes and tempura and I figured that would be a safe bet bc I've never heard of anyone particularly disliking teriyaki chicken or salmon but honestly they weren't in love with it either. oh but I will admit other reviewers talk about slow service and that was not a issue we had. overall I'm not sure what happened though, the whole visit was just not up to expectation.

Yamato has, without question, the best sushi in the entire area (both Utah and Salt Lake counties). The sushi grade fish is flown in daily and it shows - it's always very fresh, firm, and never fishy or mushy. The rest of their food is delicious as well, though, which isn't always the case at sushi restaurants. We love their teriyaki and get it almost every time we go there. Their portions are quite large and so reasonably priced - today I ordered the beef teriyaki and gyoza lunch special, which came with miso soup and salad for only $7.95. Our favorite sushi roll is hands down the Dancer Roll, which is a California roll topped with mango and a fresh pineapple sauce (to die for). We also love the Sunset roll with fresh salmon and thinly sliced fresh lemon. We haven't really ever ordered any rolls we didn't like because their menu is so varied and delicious! I've noticed in other reviews that the biggest complaint is slow service. Admittedly, this isn't really the sort of place you can pop in and out of in a short period of time. But the service is solidly good - our favorite server is Toshiko, a lovely middle aged woman who is so attentive and friendly. We hadn't been in for a few months and she recognized us today, welcoming us back and thanking us for returning. When it gets busy, I notice some of the younger servers can get overwhelmed, but for us the ambience and food are what make Yamato really shine.

Oh my goodness. Finding fresh sushi like this is hard to do. I love sushi and don't think of myself as picky, but coming here has probably spoiled me so I won't like other places as much. They have stamp cards so we got a free roll. The fish so unbelievably fresh, and they were happy to switch the asparagus out for avocado for us. Love this place!

  • Ddoong K.

We come here pretty often and the service here is always so slow. understaffed. The food is okay. Just okay. Decent. But not too great or too bad. I order almost the same thing, so does my husband but sometimes it is a little too salty, sometimes it is okay. Orem is a small place with little variety so I guess I would have to be satisfied with this restaurant for Japanese/Korean food.

It's such a good food! They are also sponsoring UVU's annual Japanese culture night every year. The chef is awesome guy and servers are all very nice and they always give me an ice cream after meal!

I happened to read one of two reviews from 10/17/14. One of them cracked me up but it's Rod's (as usual) that I most agree with. This is not even remotely the best sushi in the entire area (I presume the reviewer meant Salt Lake included), including the more immediate area it's in of Orem. This is very average, not very fresh and very overpriced sushi and if that's your thing (the restaurant was mostly empty the entire excessive time we were there), have at it. Service, as noted, is poor, but oddly enough, they do try very hard. The staff is well-meaning and friendly, but possibly incompetent, though that may also be the kitchen. The roll execution was frequently wanting and the flavors definitely could have used work. I think Rod is onto something with the correlation between increasing mayo or other sauces and decreasing freshness of the fish. Their green tea, however, was excellent and the shrimp tempura acceptable, though a bit underwhelming. Decor here is very much towards the authentic Japanese side, which was a nice touch and a lot of the patrons seemed like regulars, though admittedly, it seemed more like a friendship basis than anything else. It is also possible they do things other than sushi better (this is one of the most unpromising menus I've seen, but they did have some Korean dishes, which is, of course, precisely what I look for when I go to a Japanese restaurant), but then again, precious little choices in that geographic area. If this place moved North to Salt Lake, it would be sunk, as the food quality is on par with or below most of the 50% places her at double the price. It's easy to see the potential here, but as Rod has noted, something is way, way wrong here and until they right the ship, there are a multitude of better (and definitely much faster) options.

We've been to Yamato many times. We will usually get the takoyaki as an appetizer which is just okay. It needs more dried bonito flakes. I always order the katsudon, which can be very hit and miss. Sometimes it's great and other times the rice is soaking in sauce and the pork is very dry and tough. The udon is also quite on the sweet side, which is weird to me. The beef teriyaki and tempura combo is good because of it's portion size, but the meat can be dry as well. A scoop of Ice cream is included in dinner entrees which is a nice touch. Service is slow and the place is understaffed. Overall an average place to get Japanese food- nothing special.

Came in all tables in restraunt dirty they said give us 5 to 10 minutes. 30 minutes later they didn't even check on us and another party left as well. If I could give them 0 stars I would. Since they don't care about their customers we won't care to be back for their food.

This place used to be awesome! I'm not sure if they have new owners or chef's but the teriyaki chicken the last go round was TERRIBLE! They used to have good cuts served on a banana leaves but the time it was slammed in a bento box and was served partially cold with a sauce that one would find from a frozen teriyaki pack you buy at the store.

Our first visit to try it out after a local event. We came in the door at 9:38 and were told they closed at 10. Uh... door was open and its 20 min till. No service! We found three others willing to take a party of six at quarter till so we picked another. Never going there.

I went to Yamato for lunch for the first time. I had the Shrimp Tempura and Salmon Bento Box. The portions were big and the flavors were great. I'm not sure why I've never eaten here before but I will be eating here again soon.

Yamato has become a favorite of ours. It's always delicious. We recommend yaki soba or katsu don, but really anything is good, we've tried something new every time we've gone.

Service took forever. Soup was cold. Sweet and sour chicken was terrible. Sushi is pretty good but overpriced.

They have the best sushi in town! I wanted something spicy so I had a custom order of a roll with eel and cream cheese inside with jalapeno on the top. It was a bomb! Crazy delicious! Definitely try that next time!

  • Spaamie S.

The slowest service I have ever encountered. Period. We waited 25 minutes to get our order taken, and the place wasn't even half full. There aren't ever enough people working here. We only go here when we've got absolutely nothing going on because we know we'll be there for at least an hour and a half. The food is good - my kids love the teriyaki and I'm a fan of the tempura. Gyoza are way too salty. My son likes the sushi. I'm afraid I'm not a fan of sushi so I'm not qualified to comment, but it looks good. Expensive though. Today I almost lost my temper with the wait. Even if you're with people you love and can have a conversation with, you get irritable waiting so long when you're hungry.

This place has phenomenal food. I've been here for lunch when the service is a little better and for dinner when it is a lot busier. it took quite awhile for our food to come out at dinner, but when we saw one of the servers literally running from place to place, we realized how hard she was working...her name is Toshiko and she literally deserves a 10 star for service. She did NOT stop the entire time I was there...not for a second. So if you want phenomenal service get Toshiko:) Food is great! If you are worried about time, don't go there on a Friday or Saturday evening...

This restaurant is great to come have lunch with co workers or even with a date. I go to this place every 2 weeks, the Japanese waitress is the nicest person! The food is always great and sometimes we do have to wait a lil bit, but I dont go to a restaurant in a hurry, I go to enjoy so I dont care if it takes 20 minutes for the food to be ready. Their bento box vary from 7.95-9.95 and are soo good! Also the pork katsu curry and the udon curry which is a very thick pasta in a curry sauce with veggies and beef. Their sushi is very good also, and you if you like spicy, get the spicy chicken bowl or the spicy chicken bento with a roll or tempura veggie.

  • Jared P.

This place is fantastic! They are very courteous and make sure that my food needs are meet. Asking a few times throughout to see if there is anything else I need or check to make sure my water is full or asking if I need a refill. I have been here several times and have yet to be disappointed. This is about the closest thing I have found to "being the genuine thing". Having lived in Japan I am rather picky when it comes to my Sushi and Yamato comes the closest I have found to any of the other Sushi bars.

  • Pernilla K.

Went there a second time and ordered sashimi instead this time with some variety of nigiri sushi. Different sushi chef this time and it was a lot better. A friend ordered the chicken teriyaki and cali roll combo, and I didn't hear them complain. The waitress was very very attentive and gave some good recommendations to the two smaller children we had in our company, so the service did not disappoint either this time. We did get some free ice cream at the end like some other people mentioned. EDIT: Been here a few times now and I have to reduce it back to a three since their quality really goes back and forth, both in terms of service and food quality.

What makes Yamoto's unique is that this restaurant has crammed three dining experiences under one roof. Diners may pick whether to sit at the sushi bar, yakiniku tables, or the regular dining area, and the menu varies for each. The regular dining room offers typical Japanese stand-bys, such as katsu-curry and tempura, as well as a few dishes harder to find state-side, like tonkotsu ramun. The owners are Korean, not Japanese, and while decent, the food's authenticity is a roulette game: one never knows if the dish arriving will be Japanese, Korean, or a fusion of the two. Guests ordering Gyudon will be surprised when Bibimbap shows up. Expats from Japan might shy from the confused dining room menu and flock to the yakiniku tables in nostalgia. You must request the tables specifically, but grilling your food together is fun and delicious, and a special treat for those seeking a unique dining experience.

This place is an absolute gem. I went for the first time with some friends who are long-time fans and agree that it is the best sushi in the valley. The Princess Roll, in particular, was very memorable. Dessert was on the house. I don't know if that's something they offer everyone or because we were (comparatively) big spenders, but it was appreciated.

I love this restaurant. Best sukiyaki around! I love to get the back room with the paper doors for privacy with my family or friends. I often go there for birthday celebrations with my friends or on dates ;-). And I've never had a problem with slow service.

I come here for their Haemultang. It's a Korean seafood stew that's off the menu (and difficult to find in other restaurants), but the dish is large enough to to feed two people and generously stuffed with mussels that it's practically a bouchot. The broth is unapologetically hot, but as a wise and wizened Asian grandma once told me, if your nose isn't running at the end of a meal, then you haven't eaten.

  • Dan T.

For the area, best sushi around. Very kind, accommodating, and knowledgeable staff. Sushi is right on point. I've been here dozens of times. It is a great spot to share a meal with sushi and non-sushi eaters. If your around try it... not sexy but a clean shop and solid food.

Awesome restaurant- great food, great price, great service. We love this place. I love Marina K's review. SO TRUE! The tepanyaki is fun because you can cook it yourself...which is what we usually do. Definitely the best Japanese/Korean Barbecue in Utah.

  • Revoir D.

Best sushi in town. Period. You must try the Dragon Eye and Yamato rolls. Also, the miso soup is only $.99, as opposed to $2.99 elsewhere. The sushi is always well plated and very fresh. I have eaten here dozens of times and never been disappointed. The atmosphere is very nice with traditional Japanese tables and private dining booths. I recommend sitting at the bar - the main sushi chef is really cool and occassionally hands out interesting samples.

UPDATE: I had to rate this place down. wENT BACK IN THE FALL OF 2011 (nOVEMBER AND OCTOBER) They've changed owners a few times and they simply don't have adequate staff to make it pleasant. The food is still good, on the whole, but the service is too slow. We took my parents and family there ona Friday about 6 pm to eat. They've been there before and they loved it. The place was packed and we were seated quickly, but as we sat, we noticed a few people waiting with no food, some people waiting to pay, etc. We ordered for about 5 people and also asked for a couple fo appetizers. To make a long and painful story short, we waited 45 minutes until ONE plate came out. then 15 minutes for two others, then our appetizers, then the last one. They messed up one order and brought out the correct version, and let us "have" the messed up order. But it was too unpleasant to really be enjoyable. A couple of platters had been left sitting and were slightly cold when they got to us. This is the SECOND time the service has been slow and it seems like it's getting slower. My in laws go and commented that their service has been slower too. I wish I could suggest lunch too, but even that was slow last time I went. about 20 minutes to get food out. And it wasn't packed. They really need to get some help here or this place is just not going to make it. OLD REVIEW. Very good food for Utah. I really enjoy their sushi and the meals. The food has a great flavor and fresh. I don't know about the sushi being "unenlightened" (see some other person's review) but it is good. I have been to other Japanese restaurants in San Fran, Houston, Honolulu, Seattle, even Tahiti and Sydney, and although not on the same par as some of those, it was pretty good sushi. I have also been to some restaurants in Utah and as Utah goes, the sushi and food is better than others I've been too. The sushi and ingredients are fresh and better quality. Service is always very polite and friendly. Although sometimes, when it's busy, service can be slow. Favorites are teriyaki beef, shrimp tempura, gyoza

  • Logan T.

SLOW service. I think they were waiting for the fish to grow from eggs while we waited. It was absurd. I know these things happen so its not the end of the world, but it was a joke. They did their best to appease us, but ultimately not enough. The food was good though. You can get this quality of food or better for the same price or less elsewhere in Utah County though. If you're like me and just need variety, this place is worth a shot. But i think also like me, you'll end up going else where when your dollar and stomach depend on it.

  • Chris F.

By far the best sushi in Utah county, maybe even the state. That being said, the sushi menu is a bit scant and way too Americanized.

    (4)
  • C B.

The sushi was excellent. I only gave 2 stars because the service was awful!! They had one waitress & some teenage boy helping serve!! We asked two times for a sushi dipping dish. I'm not sure why it was not brought out with our sushi in the first place. We waited 15 minutes for anyone to acknowledge we were done eating. I don't think I will go back anytime soon! Good service is a must when I go out to eat.

Decent sushi but not fantastic. Though the place is owned by Koreans, the Korean menu is limited and mediocre.

There aren't alot of really authentic Japanese restaurants in Utah or even many that are close. Alot of Asian Fusion, cheap sushi, and teppanyaki. And if my curiosity hadn't piqued while on lunch from work I would have just passed this place as another Chinese/Asian buffet, from the outside it's not the most impressive. However it's proof that looks can be deceiving, especially from the street. Inside is a very interesting Japanese restaurant with a wide variety of dishes for a Japanese restaurant that's not in Japan. Each time I've had really good Japanese food and good sushi. Prices are reasonable and very similar to most restaurants although getting alot of sushi can bounce the price up quickly (same as all restaurants). And the decor is more authentic that your average "Americanized" Japanese restaurant making it a fun place to eat as well. If I wanted to be picky I'd say the gyoza were a bit soggy (but good flavor) and I like my Tonkatsu a bit thinner. Plus how come no restaurant in America serves a massive mound of shredded cabbage to soak up extra tonkatsu sauce?! Overall the food is great, it's be a neck and neck competition between Yamato, Suihiro, and Kyoto for best in the SLC area. The best thing is that they're setup for yakiniku!!!! However they only seem to let you cook your own for dinner so I haven't been able to confirm this is as great as I think it might be. I will definitely will be back many times.

My favorite sushi place in Utah. It's usually very quiet, very reasonably priced, and has really good food. The food and atmosphere are very authentic and the teriyaki is fantastic. I've never waited to be seated. The service is very good, but it is very slow. You can expect your sushi in 15 minutes and your dinner in 30. The angie roll is delish, and the california roll is my favorite. With a buy 10 get one free sushi stamp card, I can't say no.

    (4)
  • Sasha T.

Good service. The food is not very authentic. It's not Japanese owned therefore, you miss out on the real authentic-ness of the Japanese cuisine, but if you are not very picky, I'd say go for it.

Awesome sushi. You can tell as soon as you come in you are at a great spot with only Japanese servers and chefs. We have been here many times and always like it.

I placed a take out order from here and was very impressed with the service, food, and presentation. I ordered the Monster Crunch roll which was really delicious and the Angie roll was also very tasty (Crunch roll was the best). They were really quick on getting it out to me and opened the container to make sure I was satisfied with it. It was even delicately presented in the to go container, which I couldn't say about a place like Happy Sumo. The sushi chefs also all dressed in Kimonos and were so incredibly polite and nice. One aspect I really appreciated was that there were pictures up around the restaurant of featured rolls and appetizers. The prices are great for sushi. I definitely plan on going back and actually choosing it over other sushi places. I've been to a lot sushi places around the country and would have to say this is comparable to sushi places by the shore.

First of all, I had high expectations because of the high rating here on Yelp. I was sorely disappointed. Maybe this is the best Japanese restaurant in the Provo/Orem area, but it was one of my worst restaurant experiences ever. Just for reference, I have been to good Japanese restaurants before. I just recently took a seven day trip to Vancouver, and I ate Japanese there on four different occasions. A couple of those weren't stellar, but still enjoyable and tasty. Also, I lived in NYC for 6 months last year and had some excellent Sushi while I was there from several different restaurants. The food was OK. There are lots of crazy specialty Sushi rolls on the menu with names like "the caterpillar roll" or "the arches roll", if you're into that kind of thing. I went a little simpler and got some tuna and salmon rolls. The rolls were just OK. They were a little warmer than I am used to, and the sea weed didn't go all the way around, so I was worried that they would fall apart, but they managed to stick together fairly well. Unless you get one of the specials, the sushi costs more than I am used to paying. In the past, I've seen salmon rolls go for about $3.50, but they were more than $5 here. The noodles were also pretty good, and they came in giant kettles (see my comments on that below). All in all, it was decent food, and the prices were OK (again, assuming you get the sushi in one of the special combinations). Someone here mentioned that this place was run by Japanese people. I'm sorry, but they're not, at least the ones I saw were all Korean. Maybe the Japanese people just took the night off? Only about half of the tables were filled, but we still didn't get any attention at our table. After she brought us our food, we never saw our waitress again, except as she bustled past us from one table to another. She looked busy, but she could have taken 10 seconds to check our drinks and ask if everything was OK. At some point I stood up and went over to where she was and asked if she could please refill our drinks, and she finally did after several more minutes of waiting. I ordered an edamame appetizer for the table, and it never showed up, except on the bill, which I was finally able to get fixed, but had to talk to two different people to do so. We also ordered three orders of noodles, which were way too many for the size of our group. We thought they would be individual serving size, but they come in a big pot with a serving ladle, and any one of them would have been plenty. That's another place where I would have expected a decent waitress to step in and offer some information/advice. If you come in a party larger than 4, you can probably expect a long wait, there are only a couple of tables that can fit groups of 6 or more, and so we waited 20 minutes for a table even though, as I previously mentioned, fewer than half of the tables in the restaurant were occupied. Also, this is definitely not a place for kids. The children's menu was a joke, with a very small selection of dishes, each costing nearly as much as an adult entree.

Bento Box lunches are a good deal. The teriyaki chicken and shrimp tempura hits the spot. I can't tell good sushi from bad, but I've had the sushi here and it's tasty.

Went to Yamato based on the Yelp reviews hoping to introduce to relatives who have never enjoyed sushi cuisine. This IS NOT Japanese! It is Korean, not that that is necessarily bad, but this was. The sushi was unenlightened, the beef was tough and the ventilation was horrible. The help was very accommodating and pleasant, but couldn't compensate for a lackluster dining experience.

Who knew that there would be a decent Japanese restaurant run by REAL Japanese people in OREM????? guys.... this is the heart of mormon country in Utah, where during my 4 week stay the only "colored" people I saw were the ones working the Sundance Labs with me. So not only was it refreshing to eat non-catered buffet food from the tent we always ate at, but it was even nicer to walk into a semi-authentic Japanese restaurant. Complete with tepanyaki grills (a la benihana) and booth seating where your feet go into a hole unerneath the table. If any of you have been to Orem, you know that the highlight there is Savers, and SuperTarget. Compared to SF or NY sushi, it wasn't as good, but for Utah caliber... I HAVE to give it 4 stars. Plus the service was amazing. They even threw in free dessert for our group :)
