I'm a chile verde connoisseur and have eaten chile verde in many states and all over Utah. This location of Cafe Silvestre has the best chile verde. The quality of the food was excellent. The rice was surprisingly good. (The rise is usually average in these types of places.) If you want a fancy ambiance, this place is a bit faded, but if you want good food, often the best places are the proverbial "hole in the wall." This is one of those places. The chef has been cooking at this family-owned restaurant for 17 years and he knows what he's doing. I will definitely eat here again and again.

One star seems generous. This place is undoubtably the worst restaurant I've ever been to. The chips and "salsa" (condensed tomato soup with red pepper flakes) are not free. The chips are far too salty. The chicken in my burrito felt like canned meat. The cheese on top was a low quality mild cheddar. The prices were comparable to a high quality Mexican restaurant, while the food was on par with a poorly-run McDonald's. ...also, the interior was as disgusting and dated as the kind of motel you would expect to see in a terrifying horror movie.

I just finished eating here and am seriously considering ways to get rid of that food so I can have something decent for dinner. It was that bad. When we entered, the waitress asked if we'd like chips and salsa. Of course we would. Well, we would have if they had been complimentary... $1.50 per order. The salsa tasted like condensed tomato soup with a little red pepper mixed in and the chips were coated in enough seasoned salt for a week. Still, we held out hope for our entrees. I ordered a chile relleno, based on another review's high recommendation along with beans & rice. Everything was extremely greasy and salty. My boyfriend said his smothered chicken burrito wasn't any better... the chicken tasted like it came straight out of a can. With tip, our bill was nearly $20... roughly the same amount we spent at a local sushi joint (Yi Sushi Bistro... it's way good) to be completely stuffed. Seriously, if you're craving Mexican, just got to Mezquite across the street. You'll have more and better food for less money.

Service was great, the place did have a kinda funky smell. I liked the seasoned chips and salsa was good. Great retried beans and the enchilada was a little greasy but tasty. Rice was okay but the frosty mugs were nice touch. I will eat there again.

I am live reviewing this resultant as we eat. We were greeted promptly and sat near the window. To my right is a inflatable beer, to my left a view of a busy industrial street. Ordered a couple of beers, the frosted mug is nice. The chips are ok but greasy. Heavily seasoned. Ordered the chili verde platter with cheese. Our waitress seems nice but didn't know which beers were in stock. We are almost the only people in here on a Friday night. The food arrived quickly and was hot from the kitchen. The chilli verde is good but not spicy enough. The retried beans are good. The tortillas are actually quite good. After eating the entire meal I see what other reviewers mean by blandness. That said the wait staff was attentive and friendly.

I love flavor sadly this food doesn't have much. Love the chips and salsa! Will come back to try some other things

Tasty chili relleno and tamale, and the tea is fresh. The chili verde is great - lots of tender chunks of pork, and fresh tortillas. Great for the price.

Where to even start with this place. Besides the horrible atmosphere reminiscent of a 1980's nursing home (dusty fake flowers, nasty carpet, DI furniture, etc.) to the tv blaring a crime show (while I like them at home I don't want it at a restaurant), to the service that was slower than mud, to the microwave dinner food. My first inclination should have been when we walked in and there was only 1 other person in the place and it still took nearly 10 minutes to be seated. Once seated I pulled out a $10 gift card that I had purchased, meaning I actually spent money to buy the card ($5 for a $10 card), and they refused to honor it even though it was for their restaurant, had disclaimers that were still ok, and had no expiration date. We should have left then due to shady business practices - sell gift cards, make money, then don't take them. that's bullshit. We stayed anyway, the three of us. After we personally turned the TV off so we could actually hear each talk, we waited and waited and waited. After about 15 minutes we were brought chips and salsa and water. They then walked away without taking our order. About 10 minutes later someone else finally came and took our order (probably seeing our chips were empty too!) We each ordered something exactly on the menu, no special orders, no substitutions, just straight off the menu as is. 35 minutes later, our food arrived. We then asked if we could have more chips too. The portions were large, as all the other reviews have mentioned, but a large pile of crap doesn't make it good. I don't know how anyone can say this is authentic Mexican food unless they think Lynn Wilson frozen dinners are authentic. Maybe because we three were all white they served us "honkey Mexican" or something, but in reality I would take Taco Hell (Bell) over Cafe Silvestre if ever made to choose! My recommendation for this place would be only for back-woods hillbillies who have never eaten something they haven't shot and killed themselves before and are trying "foreign" food for the first time - they might be able to stomach it. Also, only go if you have 3 hours to kill!

We went here because it was next to the Best Western. YUCK is all I have to say...worse Mexican food I've ever had. I ordered a combo plate and everything was just doused in sauce and all soggy and mixed up. Hated it. The salsa for the chips tasted like tomato sauce. So yucky. Felt very bad going here. I should have checked Yelp for someplace good to eat. Place was rundown, I thought the waitresses were too chatty etc. Yuck, yuck, yuck

Moved to Midvale recently. Was hungry and just stopped at the first place that looked interesting. The words "authentic mexican food" and "beer on tap" drew me in. Upon walking in the place smelled really strange, slightly of farts, but you get used to it after some time has passed. We were stoked that we could get the monday $6 pitcher of beer deal. The salsa was delicious. The place was nearly empty and the service was less than adequate. The food itself came and while there was a lot of it, it had absolutely no flavor, all you had to focus on was the texture of the food. I could see myself going there for just the salsa/chips/beer, but never for food.

Chili Rellno's are really good here. But the Re-fried Beans are AMAZING. Leo is a great cook, Monica is a great server host. The decorating is aged but the food is worth the trip.

The decor and seating the time I was there was extremely off-putting and the staff, all of them, were very clearly in a state of disarray and chaos. We were there for at least 45 minutes, maybe closer to 60 and we never were able to quite determine why that should be the case. This became extremely wearing with the erratic service we got. I've never seen anything quite like it. The food, when we got it, was above mediocre, but only barely. For a supposedly authentic place, my Mexican companion was quite surprised at how much of a mess it actually was and gave very low marks for authenticity, flavor and overall quality. I had some carnitas and chile rellenos, which I thought were ok, but nothing tremendous, certainly not enough to do much more with this place than drive by it in the future. It wasn't outright terrible, but my going out to eat dollar requires a higher level than this for repeated visits. There's just too much out there that deserves it more. I don't know what was wrong that night, but when a restaurant is open for business, the staff has simply got to get it together. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that the night I was there was an anomaly and being possibly over generous on the rating, but this is one of those places where a 1/2 star would be very handy.

let's look at my history of yelps: generally, i give most every restaurant 3-5 stars. and i MEAN it! i suppose i am easily pleased? maybe? but...you guys, this place was the pits. i would have rather eaten at taco bell and that is SAYING something because taco bell always, always, always gives me a stomach ache (does anyone else get that? the taco bell stomach ache?). but this place...good hell. it didn't really taste like anything. and the waiters were sort of the worst. and i think they used all of the salts + seasonings on the chips. and the salsa was tomato soup? just...don't.

We went during lunch. The food was really bland and strangely enough served lukewarm. We were one of three couples there, and it took approximately 10 minutes for the server to visit our table. That's a long time to be left waiting. We've definitely had better service and food. You know it's a terrible experience when you find yourself looking out the window, wishing you went to the Denny's across the street.

Friendly staff; fast service; delicious Margarita; intimate environment; flavorful food; small portion sizes for price

We went late but there decor is something from a really bad casino and the food was not very good either. it did not seem like homemade mexican food it seemed like really bad american mexican and toco time would have been better. The waiters seemed to only half care about what we wanted and did not even try to explain anything about the dishes. overall we would not go back or suggest it to anyone wanting mexican food.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
