It is hard to find hidden gems like this one when major highways bypass little towns like this. If you just drive a few miles out of your way once in a while you happen to stubble upon places that are true diamonds in the ruff. Upon entering you will find a long counter with several stools and 4 or 5 tables set amongst a small nick knack shop. The shakes are decent to very good and cover a wide range from the standards to the bizarre flavor combos. The burgers are very good and well worth the 30 minute drive off the highway to taste them. It is also a nice drive with a very scenic view from all directions. Decent size menu provides ample choices for kids & adults. The Shakes range from $5 (basic) to $6.50 for the combo of flavors. This place offers some living history that should not be passed up. It is a nice break / price wise from the high end and chain establishments over in Park City. The staff was very friendly and chatted about the history of this little hidden gem. This is a must stop, see and eat place if you like a true "Mom and Pop" establishment.

this is definitely one of the best meals ever! Any of the cheeseburgers and the hand cut french fries with the local made fry sauce is absolutely delicious. try the chicken and waffle malt,or the bacon maple shale.yumm two thums up.

This is my kids favorite place to go eat (thank goodness it's no longer McDonald's) because it's also one of my favorites as well. Great food, amazing shakes, and they know how to serve a root beer. Service is always fantastic. More like walking into a friends house than walking into a restaurant.

Un-freakingbelievable shakes in more flavor combinations than an encryption expert could concoct. Good burgers, funky, old-time atmosphere and a not-to-be-missed milkshake menu! Run, don't walk!

If I were just rating the burgers this place would get a 5-star review. It is a family run business, read lazy kids here, there were no less than 5 young folks working (lol) behind the counter and it took forever to take our order. The fry's are greasy and undercooked, however the fried pickles were good. We ordered a vanilla shake and a strawberry cheesecake malt, which they forgot to make until we were almost done with our meal, my wife finally reminded them and then they argued about who should make it. They charged $2.00 extra for my premium malt which was as it turned out was strawberry ice cream that they broke vanilla wafers into for the cheesecake. We will no doubt go back for the burgers but nothing else. Just remember the service is ultra slow.

My sisters and dad each ordered different burgers and were very pleased. My mom and I ordered the cashew chicken salad (yes I was saving calories for my shake) and were let down. The price of the salad was around 10 dollars and the ingredients used were not worth the price. Though there were plenty of cashews, though the chicken was chunks of a breaded chicken patty and that is just one example. Now for the shakes!! AMAZING!! My mom got the maple bacon shake, my sister the banana cream pie, and I got the better than anything shake which had caramel, toffee bits, and chunks of homemade brownie's. The ice cream was creamy, not too thick or too runny, and the mix ins were chunks and not crumbs. I hate it when you order an oreo shake for example and it comes as oreo crumbs rather than oreo chunks. The brownies in the shake were soft and in bite size chunks. there was also plenty of mix ins. The selection of shakes to choose from is also great! There are so many to choose from!!

Don't go to the pharmacy inside the Kamas Food Town looking for burgers. Hi Mountain Drug is a few blocks down to the left, pass the gas station. If you get lost, the locals are more than happy to point you in the right direction. I had the Aussie Burger, with a fried egg on top. It's great! Pair it with a tall refreshing limeade, ask for more tart and less sweet. It was heavenly. Parking is tough and the booths are tiny to squeeze a baby and a car seat, but it's a great way to spend a leisurely lunch.

Great burgers. Simple as that. im not sure that the best of state people got it completely right, but they are a thousand times better than those at uinta drive in. Trust the word of a local boy who grew up on these burgers. Ever since Dicks went away these burgers cannot even be touched by any other kamas establishment.

This is one of the very last of the eat in drug stores and it is a real treat to eat there. Everything is excellent but particularly the burgers and french fries. The fries are hand cut every morning and may be the best I have ever had. The staff are all local and very friendly. If you are in the area theDrug Store should not be missed.

ooppps, called HI-Mountain Drug Store! Voted the Best Burgers in Utah and rightly so. Closed on Thursdays and only open until 6 pm. Wonderful Root Beer and fresh Lime Aide, too.

I have trouble with superlatives. There, I said it. I'm just not as cool as John Cusack. I've always shied away from that High Fidelity-esque ranking game, and not just because I fumble to produce the witticisms my dogmatic male filmie friends inevitably assume must accompany this type of listing. Rather, I'm not convinced of the finality, the constraint, the arrogant objectiveness such proclamation asserts. It seems absurd to me to state, unequivocally, that one thing or person or place is the best, even just of its type. Best is just too subjective. Best is circumstantial at...well, best. So the news that Hi Mountain Drug's burgers have been deemed the best in the entire state of Utah should have rubbed me the wrong way. Pure principle would have insisted on going to Dick's instead, Kamas's lower-ranking burger joint a half block away, after a recent hike in the Uintahs. Instead, that best label dangled like a shiny piece of pop gear in the murky water that is the small town food scene. My hopes were Hi that we'd have some sort of other-worldly hamburger experience, smeared with the tangy sauce of dining enlightenment. Perhaps we'd all realize our lives were nowhere near complete, settling for the In'n'Outs and Five Guys of the Salt Lake Valley. Perhaps we'd finally get over the loss of Counter Burger. Perhaps we'd even cry and hug and start planning our summer vacations around regular seats on those Hi Mountain stools. If wishes were fishes, that pop gear would have been a seven inch German trout. But alas, I wasn't hooked: I fail to see what makes these burgers any better than their cosmopolitan cousins. Don't get me wrong--the place is definitely worth a stop. There's plenty of kitsch, a wholesome family of waitstaff smiling at you as they sling waxed paper-lined baskets around in a frenzy, and the broadest selection of Tootsie Roll flavors behind the register this reviewer has ever seen. My Gonburger was juicy, and the homemade fries were certainly unique (if not quite as much so as a trip to the restroom, via the steaming kitchen itself). The problem for me centered on sauce. Far, far too much of it. Barbeque and ketchupy mayo dripping from an already saturated bun, that masked the flavor of a quarter pound patty smothered in cheddar cheese. There were onion rings in there--the typical breaded and frozen variety--but they, too, were lost in the puddle. The bread was standard, and I gave up on most of it. Overall, a good idea, and the preparation certainly seemed old school. I'm guessing this is likely the sandwich SmashBurger based their more corporate Beehive Burger on, for good reason. But as ashamed as I am to admit it, I think Smash has done a better job with the balance of it: lighter dressings, more flavorful meat, and a stack of crispier battered onions on a brioche roll. (Though they could learn a thing or two from a family-owned joint in Kamas about ambience, service, and countertop reading materials, I'll admit). I enjoyed my time at Hi Mountain, loved a bite of a malted hot fudge shake, and wished I'd had room to order the house ironport soda. But overall, I can't say it had the best burgers in the state. Still, considering the fact that I'd already eaten on that hike, I will assert with confidence that my Hi Mountain Drug Gonburger was number one on my top ten list of lunches I had last Saturday. Eat that, John Cusack.

We love out of the way places where we can find unusual businesses, kind of like the travels of Charles Kuralt years ago. We were on our way to Oakley, Utah and saw this place on the map. Stopped by and parked out front of the building. The right side of the store appears to be a summer only type walk up ice cream place which in November was closed. Noticed an unmarked police car sitting a few feet behind my car. Assumed he was fascinated by the out of state license. First thing I thought of was Mayberry and Barney. Went inside and sure enough an old drug store that apparently has long since been turned into another business. Stools and counter along the right where we could get ice cream, a banana split or milk shake. There was one guy ordering at the counter and just past that several tables and chairs where you could order a sandwich or something from the fountain. In the back of the store were more tables and chairs although at this time of the day they were empty. Lots of old "stuff" around the store plus a lot of greeting cards in the store. This is an interesting apace and we will be back to sit down and have one of the hamburgers. Glad to see these places are still being preserved.

Came here with my husband and brother. The backyard burger, better than anything shake, raspberry shake, and bacon and cheese fries are all very yummy. Great place for a lady that's 8 months pregnant and hungry. :-)

After coming back home along US 150 we noticed this little hole in the wall burger/pharmacy(?) on the way home and in desperate need of a stop. Signage about the 'Best Burger' in Utah made it almost mandatory. I have to admit, I'm a fan of little out of the way eating; so the occasion was perfect. Then we walked through the door... After having to track down someone from behind the counter and ask them for a menu, we sat down and got a look. My wife and I both went for the Cheese Burger as I thought that'd be a good place to start to see if this place lived up to it's reputation. It didn't. I'm pretty sure a simple homemade burger at home would be better. Don't get me wrong, it was better than almost every chain restaurant I've been to, but it by far wasn't the 'best' burger I've had in a while. IF you are in the area of Kamas, I'd say it'd be your best bet for good food in the area, but not worth driving in from Salt Lake to try it. They have 'Leatherbee's' shakes, which were okay, but the girl behind the counter used a dish rag she was wiping counters with, to wipe the cup I would be soon eating out of and it took 10 minutes to get someone to get to the counter to pay for our meal which was quite expensive considering...

Hi-Mountain does a lot of things very well. While I may not drive an hour each way to eat here, I certainly will stop by every time I'm in the general vicinity. The good: On the menu, you'll notice a lot of things with asterisks. Normally, this is a bad thing, as in beef* (50% horse). Here the asterisk denotes something that is made in house. You can tell that this is not mass market food. Our waitress recommended the One Tough Cookie shake (peanut butter, Oreos, fudge, and peanut butter chips), and it was knock-your-socks-off good. I ordered the Gonburger and it was incredible. It had a great barbecue sauce and the hamburger patty looked and tasted hand made. The meat was looser than a standard patty and it was packed with flavor. The fries were also done very well and are cut on site. The bad: It's inside an old drug store, so the kids wanted to buy all the toys and whatnot they had. Not so much bad as a "the more you know" situation. We will be returning!

The. Shakes. Are. Amazing at this place. It's an hour-and-a-half drive from my home, but it's tempting to head up that way just for one. I was originally drawn here by the promise of an Aussie burger. Sadly, it was just a regular burger with an egg on it. It was good, but I'd rather go elsewhere when I'm in the mood for a burger. Service was good; be prepared to wait a touch because this place is busy, and they actually make your food. All in all, a great put stop on your way to it from the Mirror Lake Highway.

After our group hike at Crystal Lake, we ended up here for an after meal in the Kamas area. The sign was not very noticeable in the front, and we almost missed them. They have additional parking in the back if the street ones were all taken. I guess it was normal for drug stores to have restaurant attached as well back in the day. Surely it had something to with how coke was originally made? The menu items were all traditional American dishes with mostly burgers and fries, etc. I got some Chicken Fingers for the kid, and a Jalapeno burger. The fries were decent, lightly salted, and chicken was well battered. They included a gummy burger candy for the kid too. Jalapeno was alright, meat was flavor balanced with nice texture, jalapeno was fresh with a nice kick, and the sauce went well with it too. Shake was probably the highlight of the meal, and it was something you could just cut straight to here. I got the Peanut Butter Shake, it was super creamy and tasty, and I would say it was probably the best shake I ever had of all the places I visited in the state. The Banana Cream Pie Shake looked pretty awesome with actual banana and pie pieces mixed into the shake rather than just syrup like many places. It might have been an altitude thing, but at Hi-Mountain drugstore, we definitely got pretty high in the mountains... off the shakes. It might even worth a trip to go up there just for the shakes.

We did a hike on bald mountain and ended up here for dinner. We arrived and waited a good 5 minutes to get seated, we finally just took seats at the bar. We decided what we wanted and watched about 25 milkshakes made, so about a half hour went by and no one took our order or asked us about drinks. We were getting ready to just walk out when we finally got our order taken. Our food took another 20 minutes, which I expected, everything is hand made. The food was great, hand cut fries, home made burgers, just great. We didn't order shakes because we didn't want to wait another 45 minutes. I so wanted to be in love with this place after hearing the great things, but the lack of customer service really got me. I understand they are busy and make everything fresh, but they could of at least acknowledged us. I feel I may be back to try a shake and change my mind. I just hope their customer service gets better.

Hi-Mountain is really what a small town hamburger place should be: totally awesome. The restaurant doubles as a restaurant, ice cream parlor and a drug store. There are a lot of quirky and cute things sold in the drug store, but the restaurant is really where the place shines. I've been a few times over the years since my family lives around the area and have always left pretty happy. The burgers are tasty -- I got the Gonburger during this trip, but the regular cheeseburger is delicious as well. I think it has a lot to do with the order of the toppings, actually. It's not patty, cheese, condiments, then the bun -- it's condiments, patty, then cheese, then the bun, which I think makes the burgers taste better. The fried pickles are great, as are the regular fries. The onion rings aren't too big but still pack a flavorful punch. And of course, there's always the Utah staple of fry sauce. If you want to top off your meal with something sweet, order a malt/shake. There are SO many different kinds. I got the Better Than Anything, which had brownie bits, toffee, and caramel. SO awesome and the perfect way to end a trip to Hi Mountain. Overall, this place is really cute, the food is good, prices are fair and service is friendly. Definitely a must-stop for anyone passing through the area.

What a treat in this small town near Park City UT! Found it on Yelp & enjoyed delicious burgers, fried cheese curds, fried dill pickles AND a hot fudge sundae. Yes, we pigged out! A local gem and even though the service was a little slow (it was Saturday night & there were several large groups) we'd go back in a heartbeat. If you like good, local food with a down home feel, you won't be disappointed!

This might be the best restaurant in Kamas, which isn't saying much. I am giving it two stars because I feel like it shouldn't have 4 stars on yelp and all these reviews are misleading. The burger was just decent, fries were ok, onion rings were so-so. Shakes are nothing out of the Utah ordinary. All pretty blah. The divey pseudo-pharmacy/country store would be endearing if the food was better and the restaurant was cleaner and less grimy. Maybe all the good reviews come from people who have been near starvation while camping in the uintahs.

We came to Kamas for the Tour of Utah stage 5 finish and discovered this wonderful restaurant. The malts and shakes are amazing, great hand cut frys, and the burger was fresh and local.

Loved it! I had the Aussie burger with a delicious fried egg on top and my boyfriend had the bbq backyard burger. We also got a side of fries, a side of fried pickles, and a raspberry fudge shake. They also had tons of cool homemade sauces for your fries, at no additional cost. 5/5 would come again on the way to mirror lake!!!!!!

35 years ago I would drive up to this place from Salt Lake. As a starving student it was awesome - great burgers, shakes, and reasonable prices. I ate there today, and things haven't changed - well the drug store is gone, but friendly service, ample portions, and a greatly expanded menu. So nice to know this little gem is still cranking out great food!

Phenomenal milkshakes! We were in search of the perfect milkshakes today in the Park City area and the Hi Mountain Drugstore shakes came highly recommended to us. We walk in the door not sure what to expect. We immediately were enamored with the store and then saw the menu... Our picks were the Better than Anything, the Raspberry Pretzel Jello and the Maple Bacon. The staff was very knowledgeable and sought out answers to all of our in depth shake-making questions. We enjoyed our shakes so much and plotted our take over the world with the yummy goodness that you expect from home made milkshakes and ice cream... the fat on top of your mouth... The decor is authentic the food looked good too! Take a drive to Kamas for milkshakes, it's totally worth the bacon chunks, pretzel bits and heath bar pieces that are mixed throughout your shake and all piles on top!!!

I have an admitted bias for small town burger-and-shake joints, so you should know right away that it would take a Herculean effort (or a really really bad experience) for a place like Kamas' Hi Mountain Drug to earn less than four or five stars from me. I will say, however, that there is a lot to love about this small general store/burger joint so don't write it off as the fanciful longings of a burger romantic. There's some meat to this story, so pay attention. Located along Main Street in a small building with a sandwich shop and a take-and-bake pizza joint, Hi Mountain enjoys prime real estate in the mountain town of Kamas. When I'm in Kamas, it means adventure time and food just tastes better. Here's where I want my big beefy burger with lots of grease and a chocolate banana shake. Post-hike it's always a double bacon cheeseburger, that shake, and an order of fries. I have my traditions, and the Holy Trinity of post-hike greasy food is carved in stone. Unfortunately, it wasn't meal time so I only got to sample the shakes. Another reason to go for yourself to experience the food and dive into the menu. They've spent some time developing some special burgers and shakes (and some charming menus that will have you plotting a return visit) and it's clear that the focus is on the food part of the store and not the general store part of the store. You can pick up sundries, but with the relatively monstrous Kamas Food Town now in the little hamlet, it's burgers or bust. Still, you can grab some snacks so it's worth a stop in to support the little guy if you need to stock up. After speaking with the fella behind the counter (whose family owns the place and who drives up from SLC 6 days a week to help out) I knew I'd have to get a couple of shakes. My boring chocolate-banana and a key lime pie. They serve a soft-serve vanilla and flavor from there--and they didn't hold back on the chocolate syrup. Since it was a busy Saturday afternoon the ice cream had been flowing out of there quite regularly and wasn't as solid as it might have been, but it wasn't shake soup, either. Fresh banana carefully chopped into chunks beforehand (nice touch) and then swirled around. Very nice. The Key Lime Pie was a much bigger production. Fresh squeezed lime, real cream cheese, vanilla wafers (or was it graham crackers?), topped with whipped cream and garnished with a lime wedge. Wha? Oh ya. In the nice fella's own words, "We're serious about our shakes." I think I got misty eyed. When I got my shakes, the guy comes out from behind the counter, goes behind the register at the counter behind me, and rings me up. You can tell he was brought up in the place and probably also fixes the machines when they break, does a little bit of marketing, balances the books, and mops the floor. Good gravy I love small town stores. One other item worth noting. You can get a housemade ironport (or ironport flavored shake) here. What's that? Look it up--it's like a mix between root beer and Caribbean spices. It's a very little-known Utah thing that runs over state borders a bit. I blew it and didn't know they had it until I was home. But Hi Mountain is on my "to go back ASAP" list so I'll be trying it soon.
