I've had Mexican food pretty much everywhere (NY, Miami, San Diego, Las Vegas, etc) and I was not impressed by this place. Upon moving to the area, I was really looking forward to eating Mexican food and I must say that I was not a fan. I agree with a lot of my fellow Yelpers in that their salsa tastes like it came out of a can - not fresh. I'm very big on rice and refried beans and these did not cut it for me. Rice was bland and it had not flavor (at least for me). I must say that I enjoyed my margarita on the rocks and the service was good.

Service has slowly degraded over the last 3 or so years. The "spicy" salsa has changed from a really good homemade Chile di Arbol salsa to red enchilada sauce with red pepper flakes in it or some such waste of time. Their menu is solidly standard. Unfortunately, this was the best place of the 3 in this town. Another boiler plate Mexican restaurant.

Ordered food Togo and asked for extra salsa to go with my order. When the ordered was picked up they were reminded to put extra salsa in it. Got home there was NO salsa. Called to complain and they said...well we don't charge for it. It was busy, I don't know what else we can say. Next time you order we will give ya extra chips & salsa. They were VERY rude to me on the phone. Next, I tried the food. HORRIBLE is the first thing that comes to mind. Apparently, they were too "busy" to make the food right cuz it was nasty. (It may have been edible if I could've hid the taste in salsa. My advice, find another place to go. They lack in customer service and quality!

Ate there last Tuesday, 2/10/15, for .99 tacos. 3 of us got food poisoning. My 9 year old is still fighting it a week later. Pediatrician took a culture, when the results are back a complaint will be filed with the health dept. just found out they have had failing health scores. Obviously we will not be back. Update: Culture shows have what is called Shigella, that is from someone pooping, not washing their hands and then preparing our food!! It has been 12 days since we ate there and we are still so sick! My daughter missed an entire week of school. We started antibiotics yesterday so hopefully this nightmare will be over soon.

Try the excellent chipolte shrimp. Great flavor. Some heat. Stands out from strip mall Mexican. Other special dishes also. Drinks large and poor Portions good. Not too loud. Better choice of all nearby

Locally, El Matador has no comparison. Great tamales! My wife and I have made it our regular Friday night spot for years now and I am pretty particular on my Mexican restaurants.

This place is pretty much stereo type Mexican food. Except for the salsa which I could tell was made from canned tomatoes. I had the three enchilada plate with rice and beans. The enchiladas were typical enchiladas that I have eaten everywhere else. The restaurants atmosphere was quiet and not very busy. The service was pretty quick aside from the server forgetting the cheese sauce for my son's pollo loco. I would recommend the rib eye, it was pretty fantastic for a Mexican restaurant according to my son who hates all food.

Very convenient right off the main road on the left here in Ooltewah. It's in an average square building and parking is out front. When we eat here, we get served quick. The food is good just like any Mexican restaurant. Chips and sausa seems to be above average here. I will frequent this establishment often.

Just not good. Salsa tastes like sweetened ketchup. If you're used to Texas Tex-Mex (as am I), this place will only make you miss home. Actually, eating at any Mexican joint in TN will only make you miss true Tex-Mex or authentic Mexican food.

I love that they give lots of chips and salsa. The salsa is served in a soup sized bowl which I can always appreciate. Good food, good drink specials and good prices. Happy to have it here in Ooltewah!

Best Mexican food in the area. Food is always good but not the best I have ever had (which was in Mexico). Food is prepared incredibly fast, I wait 5-10 min for my food after ordering about every time I go. Occasionally, getting drink refills, extra chips and salsa, among other requests can be quite slow. Salsa is great if you like it without chunks and mildly hot. And I definitely would recommend the queso dip. Overall I would say 3.5-4 stars. Not perfect but I always enjoy it each time I go. Service is always friendly. Also, they accept competitors coupons.

The food is good here, but it is your basic Southern styled Mexican food. Not authentic, but good.

The best Mexican food in Ooltewah. Of course, there are only one other Mexican restaurant in Ooltewah...and I have never ate there. I'm sure that El Matador is better.

Guacamole is chunky, yummy. You gotta try the vegetarian fajitas! Don't digress on there's 'no meat' - it's wide variety of veges are rich, luscious! Portions are huge. Everything on menu is good. Locals are fans. Paintings & murals give atmosphere.

Good mexican joint...and serves alcohol. The chips and salsa are not as good as Chilis but good enough! We had a party of ten and everybody was pleased with their food. The pitcher of margarita was average!

Nice mexican restaurant. Good service and great food. Taste is good; not too hot unless you ask for it that way. Authentic Mexican-American, not TexMex. Local restaurant; not a chain.

I recently visited El Matador in Ooltewah, Tn..............very bad experience. The food was bland no flavor what so ever. Forget about the nachos supreme, not crunchy very soggy. I talked to manager about this and he said , next time you come here I will talk to cook about how to cook your food. Did not offer to take nachos off bill. There will be no next time. Beware of this place. Staff was rude.

My family and I took a trip to a favorite amongst the locals. It's a good place to have Mexican that's cheap and in a pleasant atmosphere. It wasn't amazing but it was good. I had the Taco Salad. There were no family blow-ups at this one...

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
