Pho (beef noodle) was not so good, the tea was literally weak, ca phe sua da (milk coffee) was passable, and the bun xao thap cam (shrimp, beef, stirred fry with noodle was alright.

Let's me make this simple for you guys. As a frequent connoisseur of Vietnamese cuisine, Saigon Le is good for only egg rolls and fried rice. You want pho? Go to Pho Vietnam (which is only around the corner on Poplar) or Pho Saigon. You want service? With the exception of New Que Huong in Collierville, you won't really find much service in any Vietnamese restaurants in the area. Since enough people had talked about the 10 Saigon Mini Egg Rolls, yes, it's delicious! But the egg rolls at Pho Hoa Binh is comparable. Pho Hoa Binh also have a lunch buffet which includes egg rolls. And, for that price, Pho Hoa Binh cannot be beaten. Let me just get into the special fried rice cause it's just RIDICULOUS! It got the right amount grease and the right amount of meats and vegetation. If you never had Chinese sausage in your fried rice, you don't know what you're missing. First of all, I'm Asian and I eat fried rice growing up. Typically I make fried rice myself, but when I'm just lazy, I'll just go get the one from Saigon Le. I think I just stereotyped myself... The Chinese food in general at this restaurant is just not good, but I wouldn't say bad. Even Yao's Downtown is better (not that it means anything). I'd rather drive to Mulan at Cooper-Young for Chinese. Asian Palace, Fulin, Mosa, and Mulan are about the only good Chinese restaurants in this town. So in summary, if you want good Vietnamese, go elsewhere. If you want good Chinese, go elsewhere. If all you want is fried rice and eggrolls, well, this is your place.

Do not go for ambience or service. Do not go for Chinese food. If you are lover of Asian flavors just go and when the sister (short) or sister-in-law (tall) come to take the order, just say "what's good tonight". They say "what you like". You say, "what's fresh". They say, "meat, seafood or noodles". You say, "what you think". They say, "how many dishes". You tell them and they say, "okay, I fix for you". They bring out the food, you transcend to the wonderful adventures you've had in Asia, you see them maybe one more time, the water boy constantly fills your water glass and splashes all over the table, you leave filling like you just had a dinner in a Southeast Asia home. We've tried all the others...none compare. Then after you've been there on a regular basis and you go in on a slow night they sit at the table and tell you their troubles...FABULOUS!!!

The food is always good and fresh. Both Chinese and Vietnamese dishes are served. My favorite is #164 with an extra egg roll. Parking is usually easy and plentiful, but the surrounding area is not nice at all. So be aware of your surroundings and don't linger in the parking lot. Although I like the food, I can give the place no better than 2 stars due to the service. The wait staff usually come off as uninterested at best. The last time I ate there, the guy at the cash register did not so much as say "thank you" when I paid my bill. He also did not hand my credit card back to me but simply put it on the counter in front of me. To me, not verbally expressing gratitude to your customers is the worst service offense. Also, my friend's empty glass was ignored.

This is my favorite place to eat in Memphis, hands down. Get the spring rolls (yeah, I know, spring rolls?). They're served with a plate full of yummy herbs and greens from the garden next door. The soups are amazing as well. I'm a personal fan of the French butter mussels, but everyone seems to have their own favorite here. And don't be put off by the service...just give it right back to them. I'm serious. They'll love you forever.

Everyone thinks of barbecue when you think of Memphis cuisine. Who would have thought that there'd be yummy Vietnamese food in this place? As another reviewer stated, yes, this is one of the best places for vegetarians because of the big selection of veggie-friendly food. The portions are also big enough to share. Our waitress was extremely friendly. She even sat with us and chatted for awhile! Now that's the Southern hospitality I was looking for. If I ever go back to Memphis, I hope to stop there again.

The Bird Net Eggroll is what you want, and yes on the menu it is spelled "net". The soups are great and cheap. Lemongrass tofu is fab. The key to getting on the waitress' good side is to have the males flirt with them.

  • Art C.

Yes, the service is terrible. However, the food is excellent and cheap. I've been here several times and have realized that getting a lunch special probably isn't a good idea as the sauce-on-meat-with-rice concoctions aren't going to be anything special. The egg roll I had today was fantastic. Their wonton soup is routinely excellent, and we got the dumplings today as an appetizer. The dumplings were stellar. Here's what I'll probably get the next time I'm there: dumplings (appetizer to split with companions) wonton soup egg roll(s)

Had lunch here today and was craving their lemongrass tofu, which I had had previously (and it was delicious). Somewhere along the way, though, things have changed at Saigon Le and definitely not for the better. The lemongrass tofu had so much powdered lemongrass in it as to make it unpalatable. The spring rolls, which are always awesome, were hard and chewy, with large chunks of lettuce, and the accompanying peanut sauce was watery and tasteless. Saigon Le, I used to love you, but no more. What happened?

This is hands down my ultimate favorite restaurant in Memphis for lunch and try to eat here every time I'm around midtown. I even usually order takeout for later. Fried cream cheese are great. Wonton soup is always the best with the pork and vegetables. The lunch menu is priced super cheap and each dish is individually specially hand made and delivered fast. Only problem is I'm not educated enough in Vietnamese cuisine to know what each meal is. I always choose my shrimp chicken beef or pork and just guess which dish to order. So far I've never been disappointed but it is always a surprise when I discover what they bring me. Suggestion 1. Make your lunch menu separate with pictures and descriptions. This will help the dumb people like myself Suggestion 2. Customers are promptly greeted with a glass of ice water but are never offered an soda drink. Most of Those who are not offered a drink will likely settle for the water they already have . This could increase your revenues. Try it. I've eaten here at least thirty times. I doubt you will see me post five stars for another restaurant. Thank you for all the hard work you do each and every day. You serve your customers with a great experience and unparalleled food . You excel at what you do!!

Everything I've ever gotten here is great. Lots of choices for vegan too. Service is great and it's inexpensive. Portions are large. Definitely recommend the spring rolls and black bean tofu.

  • Elle S.

Spring rolls sucked... I asked no pork so she comes back and says we added bean sprouts today. I HATE sprouts. So that spring roll was ruined and it's not served w peanut sauce like it says. The beef pho was not good. Very greasy no taste and it had some random tentacles from god knows what in it. I took all the meat out of it. It smells very gamey and my lips feel like I just smeared it in butter. I will never come here again. Pho Vietnam needs to open back up!

Those 2 females that wait tables are a trip, scowl at you if you are a female, giggle girlish if a male. But I refuse to let them run me away as I love their food. I asked her once what the woman next table over was eating. She replied she didn't know, wasn't her table. I still go when in memphis as the spring, egg rolls are so good.

I believe a 3-star rating is appropriate for Saigon Le, but I would also say that I frequent this location more frequently than the rating would lead on. Also, I have only tried maybe 6 or 7 different items on their extensive menu. The value for their lunch specials is fantastic. Service is usually fairly prompt. Their chinese food is average. The vietnamese options are clearly better, and their charbroiled pork dishes on rice or vermicelli are well above average. Their fish sauce is very well made. The pho is also above average, but not among the best I have had. The location is a complete dive, but the food is good enough to ignore the surroundings. TLDR: Dive restaurant with cheap lunch specials. Vietnamese dishes are better than their Chinese selections. For Vietnamese food, it is above average but not close to the best in the Southeast.

Food was OK, nothing spectacular. Service was not great. Had to flag someone down to get refill on drink. Servers did not smile at all. Just kind of gave a bad atmosphere. Sheriff was escorting someone out in first 5minutes in restaurant.

I love all types of food.....and I will try anything twice...except olives and beets..... But when it comes to my favorite restaurant in the entire world...one would think that as an American, it would be a burger place....as a Southerner, it would be a bbq joint....and as a Jew, a deli.... However....my favorite restaurant in the ENTIRE world...hands down, no questions asked, undisputed....is a hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant named Saigon Le. I love Saigon Le. I am truly, madly, deeply, in love with Saigon Le with all my mind, body, and soul. Let me state for the record...I love Siagon Le. I am truly, madly, deeply, in love with Siagon Le with all my mind, body, and soul. This place is beyond legit...dont go for the ambiance, decor, or service...but for the food. This place has won countless "best of", "favorite", and food awards from local and national publications. This place would be where my last meal comes from...and here is my last meal menu....the menu I recommend to all people who go... Albert's favorite meal of all time...TO BE SHARED among family and friends...if you truly love someone and want what is best for them, a meal at Saigon Le is the best gift you can give them: -Order of Saigon Rolls...ten perfectly cooked mini egg rolls that you wrap in fresh lettuce and dip in fish sauce -Order of Birds Nest....ten perfectly fried mini egg rolls with a different batter than siagon rolls that you wrap in lettuce and dip in fish sauce -Chicken Wings -Veggie Egg Foo Yong...best egg foo yong in America according to my dad -1/2 AND 1/2 MUSSELS....off the menu item..MINDBLOWING -Chicken Lo Mein PERFECTION IN EVERY WAY!!! BEFORE YOU GO TO ALL THE BBQ AND FRIED CHICKEN MECCAS IN MEMPHIS...SAIGON LE MUST BE YOUR FIRST STOP.

This is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in the city. The food is delicious and prices are very reasonable. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the bathroom, interior and grounds could use some work. I guess this would be considered a hole in the wall restaurant, but it's definitely worth going to.

    (4)
  • Melissa W.

First trip to Saigon Le. Little hole in the wall Vietnamese joint that has no real curb appeal. The waiter that took our drink order seemed less than thrilled to be there, but I won't hold it against the place. We started with the Saigon le egg rolls and I'm certain I could've eaten 20 of them! I ordered curry chicken and the boy had a lemon grass chicken dish. Both were really good, even though I quickly remembered that curry wasn't my favorite. The menu is huge and I'll def be going back to try out some other stuff!

  • CC D.

Perhaps if I had only ordered vegetarian dishes, I would have a better opinion. But I didn't. I ordered several different entres and apps containing chicken and was disgusted by most of it. The meat was unidentifiable - brownish grey and greasy. Yuk! I ended up throwing most of the food away. This was a carry-out order and the service was slow and rude. I can only imagine how bad it would have been for a dine-in order.

"Were you doing what I think you were doing, V?" Grandma looked up from her People magazine and shot me a stern look. "What?" I gulped down a mouthful of rice, " Who is the girl next to George Clooney?" "Just another Italian model. I think you just spooned the butter sauce from the mussels over your rice before you put it into your mouth. You know that butter and rice ain't supposed to mix. We had been eating rice for thousands of years before butter came along. Don't act like an alien just because you have spent more than a decade abroad. " "But the sauce is so good. You always told me not to waste anything..." That's what would have happened if my grandma were present when I had mussels at Saigon Le, and if she spoke English. I love mussels but had never ordered mussels in a Vietnamese place until Saigon Le, now I know. Judging from the menu, it's one of their specialities. The green mussels were huge and meaty--move over pork, mussel is The Other White Meat. The (French influenced?) butter sauce was so good that I couldn't help soaking it up with the rice. I also enjoyed the vermicelli salad with Vietnamese grilled pork. The pork was succulent and flavorful, and I discovered lots of salad greens at the bottom of the bowl, a welcomed variation much to my surprise. I like the fact that their dining room is small and sectioned, imparting a sense of coziness, unlike a few other Vietnamese places all with one big open room where I can't seem to find a place to hide. I could see why their service registered quite a few complaints on yelp but I didn't experience anything unpleasant myself. "Attitudes" stemming from cultural differences and language barriers rarely faze me. We counted 12 cats in their back parking lot one evening as we were leaving and I was mildly intrigued.

"Don't judge a book by its cover, and don't judge a restaurant by its neighborhood!" I stay in med district and I never went to Saigon Le because of its sketchy looking facade. I finally tried out this restaurant and I was definitely impressed by it extensive menu. It certainly has lots of variety for a reasonable price. We ordered two tofu dishes, one with black bean sauce and other one with lemon grass. Both the dishes were way beyond my expectations. They were one of the best tofu-dishes I had in Memphis. I was delighted by its taste and I got a feeling that it was too authentic and not Americanized (I do not have any Vietnamese friend who can help me decide about its authenticity). The staff was also friendly. My friends told me that the restaurant is generally very crowded during lunch time and lots of people prefer take-away during dinner time. I went there for dinner and I just saw people carrying boxes. I am definitely visiting this restaurant once again. I recommend everyone to give it a try.

The food was excellent and the portions were large. $30 for 2 people and 2 courses was really good. However the food would have been kept warmer on a tee light tray and the server was very abrupt and off putting. Just go for the excellent choice of dishes and take no head to the service.

Awesome menu. Great fresh addition of herbs! Bird net rolls are amazing and original. Not the most upbeat place, but I appreciate the genuineness.

I had initially wanted to try Saigon Le for a soup they had that a co-worker of mine said would clear my congestion. My congestion cleared up though, and I still went and was very impressed by the food I ate! We ordered quite a bit of food for 4 people, but there was no shame once we tasted everything AND had leftovers. We started off with the Saigon egg rolls, veggie spring rolls (for the lone vegetarian of the group) and a hot and sour soup. The spring rolls were the best part of the meal. The soup was equally delicious, and honestly one of the best hot and sour soups I've had. After our appetizers, we had shrimp friend rice, Kung pao chicken and wonderful shrimp. Our vegetarian friend had a tofu dish that she raved about. The wonderful shrimp, though it had a bit of a kick, was absolutely delicious (probably why it's called wonderful). It was full of plump shrimp and perfectly cooked vegetables. I found myself skipping over pieces of shrimp to eat those awesome veggies. The shrimp fried rice pretty much rocked my world too. I think I could have eaten half the plate had I not gotten appetizers. Though I didn't have much of the Kung pao chicken, it was full of flavor too! As in all of the reviews, the wait staff was not overly friendly and Saigon Le isn't in the cheeriest of neighborhoods, but damn do they have good food!

The Pho (#151) was good, but don't order the yellow chicken curry: My friend had a piece of steel wire in his and they only gave him $3.70 off of the $8.70 total. So to be clear: The bad rating is for the terrible service both before and after the steel wire incident but also because everything but the soup is not at all good.

  • Mary T.

After reading all the reviews about terrible service I was scared to go here! But we actually had decent service. Our waitress was nice and talked to us and even made a couple jokes. The lady who brought some of our food didn't say anything but I didn't really expect her to. Overall the service was much, much better than I expected based on previous reviews. The food we got was excellent. The birds nest egg rolls are definitely worth trying. The dishes we ordered were rather large and ended up being two meals for me which made it a great deal for the price.

I'm hovering between a 2-3 star rating on this one. I'm trying to be fair, but it pales in comparison to Pho Hoa Binh which is about 5 minutes away. Pales! We ordered the vegetable spring rolls, green bean tofu and vegetable egg foo young to go the other evening. It was all packaged nicely and still hot when my husband got it back home. The spring rolls were delicious- the dipping sauce included made them even better. If you go here, do yourself a favor and order a plate. The green bean tofu was odd to say the least. Huge hunks of tofu mixed with canned mushrooms, carrots and green beans served on a bed of white rice. I hate that they use canned mushrooms. Totally lame. There was no sauce on the tofu mixture, which is fine, but it was too dry and bland to not have anything. Especially once it was served with the rice. The egg foo young was good and had huge hunks of veggies mixed in- they certainly weren't an afterthought. Would I come here again? Not if Pho Binh is open. Now, if the Binh is closed I would totally think about it. Funny, the only reason I ended up here instead is because they had a power outage and closed unexpectedly for the day. I needed a Vietnamese tofu fix. It's addictive, what can I say?

  • Ben B.

I was coaxed into trying this place and I am thankful that I did! Their hot and sour soup is the best around. I also ordered the Saigon egg rolls and that is the main dish that keeps me coming back for more. The manager showed us how to properly wrap the egg rolls in the lettuce wraps which made them so much tastier. Their entrees were "ok" and the service was "spotty" but thats not what keeps me coming back. It is the soup and egg rolls.

  • Paul C.

If I could, I'd give this a 3.25 stars; it's slightly above average for the average Vietnamese place, but not by much. The food: I got their Pho Dac Biet, which is their special Pho with beef and meatballs. The ingredients were fresh and the flavor was pretty good(it's hard to explain, but it's more of a homemade taste, and it's fattier, but I dug it), but nothing spectacular; it's pretty much your standard pho. The spring rolls were good also, but again, standard spring roll at a Vietnamese place. Their menu is relatively diverse; they seem to also serve the standard Americanized takeout Chinese. They also have a large selection of vegetarian dishes. Price: 6.75 for the pho, and 2.25 for the spring rolls. These prices are cheap for what you get, and that's the reason why this place is above average as the cheapness pushes what you get for your average dollar above the standard. Service: It was a bit slow and the waitresses may seem rude at first glance because they don't say much, but I think it's really more of the language barrier. Try: The pho! It's definitely a different flavor, but you might love it! I'd definitely come back here again to get my Pho fix. Pho Vietnam around the corner has better food overall but they're definitely more expensive.

Best pho: hands down. I've gone to several places in Houston and still haven't found pho that's this good. Prices are awesome, food is fresh, portions are generous, but service sucks.

  • Michael H.

My absolute favorite Vietnamese place in Memphis. If you know what you're doing, the food is amazing. Definitely start out with an order of Saigon Egg Rolls and ask the servers for advice on an entree when in doubt. Some reviewers seem to think that the service is terrible. But that's because you walk in expecting bad service. If you treat them like you're at a fine dining establishment then that's what you'll get. They're more than happy to make suggestions and bring you into their family.

    (5)
  • Jiemin L.

The customer service is not very welcoming. Server was impatient to introduce dishes. I ordered beef pho as it is the most recommended by reviews here at yelp. I was surprised to see a chalk of butter in the soup. It makes sense to me since the soup itself is pretty much flavorless. The side cilantro and basil leaves that come with pho are really not very fresh.. I would not want to visit here again.

  • Marlin M.

+5 for the food quality, -1 for the service. About the food: I wouldn't change a thing about the menu items I've had. I've tried a lot of things on the menu (Vietnamese, Chinese, Pho, etc) but I always find myself reverting back to my favorite menu item:

I dont understand what all the hype is about. Their food is super average and that is being kind. I am Vietnamese born so I'm sure I know a thing or two about Vietnamese food. Their foods are Americanize and service suck. I rather go down the street to Pho Vietnam, where service isnt must better but the food is definitely authentic!!!!!

Love me some Saigon Le! Huge menu that we try new things off of all the time. Usually love everything we try. Yes the ladies can come across and surly, but are actually quite nice and helpful if you get to know them. I would list good items but really never had anything bad! Just try what sounds good to you.

Saigon Le is *so* good. I'm not even a vegetarian (far from it) and I love their food. The wonton soup is awesome - especially if you're feeling under the weather. I also love the curried wheat gluten. Yum.

  • Raven J.

Sweet lord, how I miss Saigon Le. Been out of Memphis for several years now, but I still pine for the saigon spring rolls (to wrap in delicious herbs... yum!) and lemongrass tofu. I even miss the often surly waitstaff! It's all part of the charm. Let it be a testament to how good their food is that even after living in New York City for over a year, my friends and I still remember it fondly.

  • Lindsey S.

Best place for Vietnamese soups in the city! Saigon Le has cheesy decor and some surly waitresses- most people tend to complain about the rude service. I actually don't mind the bitchiness (it's a much better alternative to the perkiness you get from annoying servers). If you want a waitress to be nicey-nice then this is not the place for you. Now, that being said, let's move on the fantabulous food. It's authentic, has large portions, and is full of inescapable flavors. I've had so many things on the menu but I always have the sweet and sour catfish soup when I can't decide. Many times my boyfriend can't decide either so he'll ask the woman to just bring him whatever she had to eat for lunch that day. It's always amazing. All the shrimp dishes are filled with an enormous amount and the Chinese food is pretty good too- try the pork fried rice. Don't forget the spring rolls either!

This restaurant is located in an unsavory area of Midtown. I would recommend going during the lunch hour (any time during daylight hours). Nice atmosphere, casual. I've seen a few local celebrities eat here. I like to order the vegetarian pho with rice noodles and spring rolls (with shrimp). In my opinion, the best pho in Memphis. Be sure to come hungry because the bowls of pho are big, or you can do what I do and order one big bowl and share. =)

A hole in the wall Vietnamese / Chinese place where the local Vietnamese (and some Asians) shun (not because of their food but complicated inter-relationship). Good Vietnamese dishes especially their Saigon egg rolls (the chilli ie, hot sauce - that comes with it is yumz!), hot and sour catfish soup and lemongrass tofu. All their Vietnamese dishes (rice and grilled pork, vermicelli combos and pho) are good. Service is selective depending on their moods / your luck (lol) - sometimes they are very chatty, sometimes they ignore you totally lol. But food is always consistently good. Never tried any Chinese dishes there however. I am Chinese and I'm picky about my Chinese food. Go across the street (rivals of this restaurant as I understand lol) to Lobster King for dim sum or better yet, take a drive up to Germantown to New Asia if you want good authentic Chinese food!

  • Janice T.

For all you vegetarians out there, Saigon Le is for you! They have a wide variety of vegetarian dishes for you to choose from. Their vegetarian spring rolls and vermicelli dishes are among the best in the city. However, the last time I ate pho there, I was a bit disappointed. The noodles tasted a bit stale. Regardless, I still pop in every once in a while to enjoy their other dishes. And oh yeah, if you ever stop by, try the Vietnamese "333" beer!

  • Jonathan J.

I used to be the biggest fan, but the waitress who is always so rude kept charging me for the wrong items (usually $2-3 more) and when I finally said something at the cash register after time three, she made a huge deal out of it and walked away squawking in Vietnamese. I may order takeout, but I will not eat in again. Poor business ethics, great food.

i heard so much about this place...seeing it in the memphis magazine about how many awards this place won for being best veitnamese in memphis. so i had to try it. i was pretty shocked when i got there. it's sort of in a ghetto area. lunch menu is really cheap. but i went there to try the pho. pho was bland. i had to add hoisen sauce and that red chili to make it satisfying to my palette. the fresh spring rolls w/ peanut dipping sauce was really good. so was their fried rice. my friend enjoyed the charbroiled pork w/ veggies, noodles and fish sauce. the women waiters are the worst i've ever come across. has a scowl on their faces and talks to you like their angry. and they once they give you their food they never come back to see if you need anythings else or drink refills. you see them in the back talking on their cell phones the whole time. there's a latino waiter there tho who pays attention to you while those women continue to scowl, ignore you and talk on their cells. i didn't even want to leave a tip..but left one hoping the latino waiter will pick it up and not the mean ladies. want better vietnamese food w/ friendlier service? go to pho hoa. it's around the same area.
