I am extremely disappointed in this coffee shop. If you want just a cup of coffee and a muffin, then this is your place. Otherwise, look elsewhere. Today was the third time (and the last) that I have been here. EVERY TIME I have come here they are out of product. While perusing the menu, the waitress proceeded to tell me all the ingredients they were out of. They were waiting for the produce to arrive. So I ditched breakfast food to order one of their specialty coffees, pralines and cream. The waitress proceeded to tell me they were out of that syrup and then rattled off a list of other syrups they did not have. No wonder the place was dead when I got there. I ended up getting a small plain latte and meeting my friend at La Baguette. Now THAT is a great place.

Usually if a place just isn't my scene but they haven't done anything offensive Im going to give them 3 stars as its never my intention to diss a locally owned business for simply not being to my particular taste. But this is apparently unacceptable to the incredibly rude owner of this establishment so perhaps I should elaborate. (Rudeness by the way is a sure way to earn a rarely given one star) First off, I have one check in at this place but have been many times over the years, mostly with groups of friends or for organization meetings. Of all these visits I have never once had a beverage that was good, and I am not the first person on here to question the beverage quality. If you like paying $3 or more for watered down dirt than by all means be Republic's guest. 2nd, to give credit where credit is due I have never had a bad breakfast. I took this into consideration to average out the terrible beverages in my prior review. Excuse me for not giving republic a giant pat on the back for knowing how to properly cook bacon and eggs, which are probably two of the easiest things to make and are over priced at this establishment. However I would have to recommend you stay away from any of the baked goods - I'm not sure if they're vegan, sugar free or just bland on purpose. 3rd, is of course the ambience. I stand by my assessment that this is the hangout of choice for hipsters and high point yuppies. Both groups love overpriced items so it is no surprise they are drawn here like flies to a lightbulb. And republic offers them plenty of seating at rocky tables they are too busy snarking at yelpers to fix with ripped up booths patched up with duct tape. Least we not forget that the parking lot cannot accommodate as much space as the interior so you may find yourself parking on the street which I don't believe is technically allowed but everyone does anyway. They do have a bike rack. 4th is the staff. I have never once seen a happy employee here but perhaps I am not cool enough to know that smiles and friendly service is not in. Perhaps it's because I do not dress like a hipster that the staff can sense my lack of belonging and act with such annoyance that I dare to want to order something. It's like my money isn't cool enough, aww - my poor money. So there you have it, the truth about republic. I do apologize dear Memphians for being brief and not forthcoming of all the ways this place is an annoying mark upon our local economy. But seriously, if you love this place than great, please keep going so I can have a shorter wait at other friendly neighborhood establishments.

This place left me quite underwhelmed. But, I'll start with what I like. It's very cute and local. From about 9:45-11:00 during my Saturday breakfast, I saw several people come in for to-go cups of coffee. Many of the patrons were in cycling outfits, so I figure this place is a common stop for that crowd. They also have full espresso and brunch menus. I can see this being a cool lunch or study spot during the week. My dissatisfaction ,however, started with my server who was either overwhelmed or just not good. It took her a while to acknowledge me and even longer to come by to get drink orders, bring water, etc...Another waiter from a different section served one of her tables and I overheard him say he came over because they were sitting way too long without service. Not good...This place has limited parking, so the last thing I wanted after tricky parking was slow service. To my server's credit, she did apologize for the wait and thank my table for our patience. Now on to the food. It's fine. Not bad or amazing, just fine. The menu had a good spread of egg beni options, but everything else seemed limited. The cheese grits that were mentioned in several reviews were just okay. Memphis is my home, but since moving I visit it less and less. I'm kind of disappointed I spent one of my limited dining moments in the city at this establishment.

I love the atmosphere of this place and the coffee is really good! The only thing I'd say is that it's a little pricey

Surprised by lack of local coffee alternatives in Memphis, but was eager to try out Republic on a visit to friends. The coffee was "ok." Not great, and not served with any particular appearance of care by the staff at the time. It was pretty quiet in the late morning, in the early fall. It was also dark inside, and while that sometimes adds to the ambiance, in this case, it just felt gloomy. I might go back next time to see if this was just an off day for what had been a highly anticipated coffee shop.

This place is pretty interesting. I will say this is a spot for students to come in and do their papers because that's what I saw when eating at the place. Also there isn't a lot of parking which it can be tricky parking on the side of the sidewalk not knowing if something will happen. Now to the food I had two sandwiches which at first I was told that they were out of chicken but later on she came back and told me they had some. I will to a scale of 1 to 5 the food is 3 1/2. The coffee is at a 4. This place would be 5 stars if the menu was bigger and better parking.

One of my faves in Memphis. The Vegas is my go to. Never fails to disappoint. Friendly staff, decent coffee and a cool vibe

Interesting little place. They serve coffee, sandwich, and breakfast items. Coffee and hot chocolate is OK, and nothing special. It is not bad however. Food was also acceptable. Good but not worth going out of the way to visit. If in bind, and looking for cheap food and coffee, definitely go here. Other times I would recommend other establishments.

My favorite coffee spot in Memphis, Republic Coffee sits on Walnut Grove Road right near the Walnut Grove/Union split. It's always filled with friendly staff, a plethora of on-duty police officers, and the best bulletin board of local opportunities in town. I stop here regularly at least twice a week on the way to work, sometimes to get just my large non-fat latte to go, but also some times a bagel with cream cheese to eat at my desk. I don't even have to order anymore - the drink is started when I walk up and say hello. Republic Coffee proudly displays "Choose 901" coffee sleeves, and offers the 901 hats and bumper stickers for sale. As a true local eatery, it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and it even offers its rooms for community group use upon request. If I did not mention it, the latte here also blows a certain Seattle chain's out of the water. Four stars.

This is it. I'm new to the Memphis area, so I've been cruising the cafe scene for a little while now. I have now visited Republic Coffee at least 4-5 times with a variety of friends, and each time I have been absolutely satisfied. I love the large variety of specialty coffee drinks offered- my most memorable experience with this has been the "girl scout" mocha. This mocha is inspired by the not-so-thin mints the girl scouts are notorious for and delivers a minty, rich mocha experience. However, the breakfast is what truly stole my heart. They serve breakfast all day, and for that I am thankful! My friends all salivate for the french toast stuffed with strawberries and cream cheese (this is on my future wants list), but my favorite right now is the smoked salmon on everything bagel with cream cheese and capers. It's crunchy, flavorful, rich but still light. Parking can be a bit of a challenge during peak hours, but you don't have to pay a meter at least! The interior is a little bit dark, but it still feels spacious and definitely feels cozy. They also offer free wifi and a good amount of tables to work or eat at. Altogether... this is one of my favorite places in Memphis so far. A big thanks goes to all the Republic Coffee staff!! You all are doing a great job, keep it up!

Great place to meet someone for conversation or bring your laptop to get some work done. Great coffee, great selection of tea, great wifi and I've never had a problem finding a power outlet. They can handle groups that meet in the back space, like the monthly Memphis Geek Breakfast. Open late too!

I like Republic Coffee - it's laid back, a little quirky, and has pretty good food and good coffee. The staff has always been friendly and actually, pretty funny too. One time it was joking about my out-of-it-ness early in the morning, the next time it was an in-depth conversation about sugar packets, you just never know. They're definitely not buttoned-up and formal, but really, who goes to a local coffee shop expecting that. The food is slightly higher and more limited than you get at someplace like Panera, and pretty in line cost-wise with Starbucks. To me, the food's solidly good but not great. Likewise, all the coffee and coffee drinks I've had are good, but haven't blown my mind. I live about 15 minutes away but try to get to RC most weekends. That's partly because I try to buy local, but mostly because it's my favorite coffee spot in Memphis. Good food and coffee, and a solid place to just hang out a while.

I've been here a number of times in the past but today made me not want to go again. The service was slow even though it wasn't crowded. I brought someone from out of town who loves coffee but received the peanut butter mocha like warm (slow server), without a napkin or spoon, and when asked to take it to go, the sever placed her entire hand over the lid. There were two other employees who truly lacked good hygiene. One was scratching his head and the other kept coughing without covering her mouth. I left feeling embarrassed! My out of town guest was totally grossed out and I was thoroughly disappointed.

I like the space the most. It's sprawling, but designed with a nice variety of little alcoves and places to sit. There's always been room to sit down when I've stopped by and there's always an interesting variety of people. The hours are excellent too and it's usually got people in there late into the night. Unfortunately, the drink and food has been hit or miss. The coffee in particular seems to be all over the place--some days it's good, some days it's been pretty bad. The espresso drinks too are, unfortunately, not quite up to snuff. Too bitter, lacking in flavor, and somewhat awkwardly made (i.e. uneven distribution of the espresso, random foam all over the place, etc.). The food has also been a mix. Once, on the suggestion of the waiter, I got a peanut curry soup that was absolutely delightful and hit the spot for what I wanted at the time. Another time, my dining companion got fruit that was clearly past its prime and looked like there might've been something growing on it. The breakfast sandwiches are pretty good though overall. Service follows the food and drink--sometimes you get really great service, sometimes you get disinterested hipsterness. I'll keep coming back to Republic simply because of the hours, but it's always an adventure to see what you'll get!

I tried this place again because I was with a group of people who insisted. Same impressions, same poor service and disappointing food.Unfortunately, due to this, the owners arrogant response to my former review and inability to address the points that I mentioned as well as lack effort to do anything to suggest that a another chance would be appreciated, or that any of the issues would be addressed or considered....even though they have been mentioned by others, I am forced to drop this review from two to one star. I wish very much I could like this place. Its so close and convenient to me. I suggest that Fitz place his business before his ego and listen to his customers.

The pralines and cream latte is ah-mazing. The kind of awesome that is slap-ya-mama good. It's very laid back and chill- no need for hipster airs here. The artwork is awesome and the community connections are great. Also- open until midnight. Better coffee, service, and hours than Starbucks. Go here. You won't be disappointed.

Worst customer service ever!!!!! The food is great but management should really address the staff and their attitudes. Here's an idea..if you don't want to work in customer service DON'T. ..it's just that simple! !!!

Republic Coffee used to be the best breakfast and coffee joint in midtown. I haven't lived near there in nearly 3 years so I don't get to visit often. The other day I went and noticed they had changed up their menu and simplified it, if you will. No more of my favorite hash brown casserole. They also no longer make my favorite coffee drink... Now they are sticking more with mainstream regular coffee drinks instead of their specialized menu before... Wasn't as excited about Republic Coffee this go round

Went here for breakfast when it was a 60 minute wait at Bro Junipers ! Not wanting breakfast THAT bad tried Republic. It was not crowded but busy and very good. Great hot chocolate, oatmeal, bagels, egg dishes etc. We had 6 people and were served quickly. Nice atmosphere, wifi, and funky decor. Will be back.

Republic is a place where much of the neighborhood descends upon it daily so you have a real community feel. I know the owner's and just love them so I am aware of how much heart and soul goes into making it the best in Memphis.

Republic Coffee is a little out of the way for me but I prefer it to other choices available to me. I like that they have plenty of seating options including tables, booths, and couches. If you take a seat rather than order your drink to go, the brewed coffee is refilled! The staff is happy to provide you with a to-go cup on your way out if you request one. I also like that they have a food menu offering more than just bagels and toast. This past Sunday I visited and asked them to bring me a pile of bacon. And they did. And it was awesome bacon! I also ordered a breakfast sandwich and told the server to keep the bread since I wasn't going to eat it anyway. She didn't even blink and my sandwich sans bread hit the spot!

This used to be my favorite place. Sure the service was pretty slow but friendly, like a lot of coffee places. The real issue is the food. It used to be delicious. I craved the beautiful smoked salmon that I would order every Saturday morning. I would get it on salads if I ended up there for lunch or dinner. It was one of my favorite dishes in all of Memphis. Just succulent and perfect. The last time I went (and it probably will be the last), I was served an abomination that I call 'road salmon,' as in it tasted like this salmon somehow crawled out of the water, onto the road, where it got hit by a car and was left to rot. Then the exhaust from passing cars gave it a dirty smoke flavor. This is what they served me. It was grayish pink, disgusting, and I actually suspect it was borderline rotten. I want to vomit just thinking about it. This place has gone downhill in the last year - they're always running out of ingredients, constant turnover of staff, attitude from a higher-up in the establishment. What happened? This is no way to run a business. Very very sad.

It was such a sweet surprise!!!

I really like working from here when I need to get out of the house...or when I need an awesome breakfast after a long night of drinking. Either way, I'm a fan of the food, vibe, and friendly service. I always carry my hotspot but I hear they have free wifi. And I see quite a few other people working from here so I don't feel so guilty about taking up a table. Plus I'd much rather support local business than hang out at the local Starbucks... Bonus points are also in order since they are so close to my house!

So after reading Kyle's review and the owner's completely hilarious response, I just had to come in and try this place. The menu and decor looked good from the pictures. I love breakfast food and the decor definitely fit the casual vibe of "come in, have a coffee and hang out." It made me miss the good old days of college! But let's be honest, I didn't come for the decor or to study for a test, I came for a great cup of coffee, a yummy breakfast and a friendly, attentive staff. And here's where my two star review begins... So it's a coffee shop, right...so how do you run out of vanilla syrup for a latte drink??? Regardless, coffee was pretty good and I ordered something else. So ok, time to try that famous smoked salmon sandwich I heard such great things about and that they are known for! There are only five ingredients in this sandwich, but the sandwich only came with three...everything bagel, a super thick cut of smoked salmon and almost no cream cheese. Where were the onions and capers? Not on the sandwich, because they were out of both ingredients. The in-house smoked salmon had pretty good flavor, but it was cut so thick that the sandwich was not enjoyable. So the service. First, when I walked in (at 8:30am on a Saturday and there were all of seven people in the restaurant),the wait staff was very busy...chatting behind the counter and ignoring me. So I walked around and finally a waitress said hi and said to sit wherever. Ok cool. She was nice and waited on me! But when I was done with the meal, I tried several times to flag her down as she was sitting ten feet away reading a book. So based on. My experience, less than par food, and still paying full price for the sandwich that didn't have all the ingredients of a signature item because the restaurant was out (clear sign of lack of restaurant management), I will definitely not come back. If you're the owner reading this review, please note that I have the waitress a nice tip even though she didn't deserve it, and I was completely disappointed in my meal, so please don't hate on me via Yelp. Clearly other people like your establishment, but based on the things I mentioned in my review, I clearly did not have the same experience.

I really wanted to like this place. Unfortunately, it's attempt to be a quirky, charming, hipster coffee shop failed. It's not charming OR quirky. It's just grimy and old. The pastries look like they were purchased from Costco a week ago, and the employees look like they would rather be making coffins than working at Republic. Two stars for being open late, but I probably won't be back.

Let me start this review by explaining what I'm not. I'm not a hipster. I'm not a person that takes my laptop and bookbag and studies for hours on end in public places. I'm not a rabid fan of alternative, local coffeehouses. That being said, it was sheer curiosity (and cabin fever) that made the boyfriend and me stop by on a rainy Saturday afternoon. At the counter we were directed to have a seat and wait for a server, since we were dining in. Seemed a little odd for a coffee shop, but ok. A server quickly turned up with water and took our coffe order, leaving a food menu behind. My hot chocolate was good, as was my boyfriend's espresso. We hung out for a while, but didn't want anything to eat, which I think frustrated our server a little. However, he still turned up with our check, and was pleasant, which is more than I expect in Midtown. So, while this is definitely not my scene, and I'm not sure I'll ever be back, it's not because there's anything wrong with Republic.

This is almost a daily stop on our route to work. I'm not super-picky about my coffee, I usually drink a latte, but really go there to hang out. Dependable wifi, friendly staff, and a good patio! We hold a weekly Russian language class there too. They have free rooms for non-profits to use for meetings and classes. The room is spacious, clean, and it's in the back so it's quiet. The owner, Fitz, is a ponytailed California transplant, and really wants to improve Memphis by being a bridge between groups who have very little interface. It's why he opened Republic in this location, and it's been a resounding success if you ask me.

Another great experience! The eggs Benedict were delicious and very filling. The black forest ham had so much flavor and the biscuits went well with the eggs. Paired with a well-crafted latte, and excellent brunch!

I really enjoy coming here to get some work done. They have a lot of work area including a more lively front area and a quiet back. They have good coffee with free refills and a very underrated breakfast. My go-to breakfast is the Vegas. Their hash brown casserole is very tasty as well as their bagel with butter and honey. If you are needing to get some work done, I recommend this place to anyone.

Good mixture of crowd, unique decorations, decent waitress, good food, and great selections of coffee. The only problem was the wi-fi is very slow. Other than that, I'll be back when I'm in the area.

Our server preceded service by saying "Hey. What's up?" I thought that was really cute. I like the atmosphere of the restaurant. It was airy and arty and very comfortable. My friend and I both ordered the Prague eggs benedict, which was a biscuit topped with eggs, grilled asparagus, mushrooms and hollandaise sauce. We also ordered cheese grits, but we got potatoes. Everything was delicious and light. The food was perfectly cooked. I was very disappointed in the coffee. It just wasn't good. I am deducting a star for the order mess up and the coffee. Otherwise, everything is wonderful.

Okay so I see a lot of hostility about Republic, and I have to come to my favorite coffee shop's defense. I was born and raised in Memphis till I left for college this past Fall. I studied for countless finals and wrote a number of papers in this establishment and each time I've been happy. The people are friendly! Sure they might not smile at you all the time or want to do idle chitchat but keep in mind these people have been working all day, probably dealing with assholes left and right. They're working, of course they don't want to be there. The music: if you don't like it.....earphones people! Their coffee is the best. I like my coffee strong, and I'm never disappointed. I usually get a vanilla latte with an extra shot of espresso, but sometimes when I just need to get some work done I'll just order a drip coffee and some food. Their tea is also top of the line! One time I was studying for a physics final my senior year and the woman refilled me 7 times and didn't give me a dirty look once! Did I mention that refills are FREE? How can you possibly complain about that? As for them running out of syrups...yes it's annoying, but it happens. Sidenote: Their muffins are the bomb. If you haven't had them, you haven't lived. The place is big, and roomy and eye catching. It's the perfect place to people watch if you need a study break. Or if you just want to people watch. All in all, Republic embodies the unique qualities Midtown Memphis aims for. It's honestly one of my favorite places in the world, and I'm sad I'll be leaving it in a few short weeks. You can't judge a place by one shitty experience. Give it another try. Trust me, it's aces. Shelby

Came here after a friend recommended it. It was pretty busy, but the staff greeted us promptly and warmly. Everything on the menu looked appetizing, I got the Che Che breakfast croissant and it was delicious! The staff have a good sense of humor! Will definitely come back the next time I'm in Memphis.

How can I be more appreciative of a place that's seen me through growing up? I've been a customer since it opened. And seen the parades of pedestrian traffic come and go. Seen managers and workers, feed their families... While keeping me comfy and well fed. I've gone thru ups and downs, had make and break moments over a cup of coffee in this place. I go all over, but this feels like home base. Don't miss out on the atmosphere. The food which I've had so often I can't remember what's a big deal, but this is a gathering place to kick it and have Mother's Day breakfast, or a regular Tuesday with your friends in the oppressive memphis heat and smoke and talk over an iced coffee on the front porch. Bring your thirst and your hunger, but bring your harmony and your desire to be fed because this place is heart and soul

This place is fabulous, its so quaint and the positive energy is radiant. The wait staff and barista were extremely helpful. I went with a group of people and was able to try a little bit of everything. I definitely recommend the Newport (strawberry stuffed french toast) and the honey latte with soymilk. There are plenty of vegetarian options and breakfast is served all day! I will definitely be back to try more! :-)

After waiting well over 20 minutes for a hot tea and an americana (and watching tables and other patrons that arrived way past us get their drinks), we got up and left. The server just said, "ok guys" as she watched us walk out. No "I'm sorry" or anything remotely close to regret. Also, when we ordered food, which we also never got, they were out of one of the ingredients...but offered to upcharge us for a substitute. Huh. Disappointing, as we'd heard good things, and love to try out local spots.

Let me start this by stating I absolutely love the coffee from Republic Coffee. Hands down, my favorite coffee in Memphis, however they do not have the best food. I had the McKnight in a tortilla (what kind of sandwich shop runs out of bread at 11 am?! ) it was okay but the chicken tasted like those frozen Tyson cooked strips you can buy at Wal-Mart, the strawberry sauce was okay. I had the Roman Mac & Cheese as a side and it was pretty tasty. The boyfriend had the Maximus on toast (again out of bread) the brisket was really tough and also tasted like something they heated up in the microwave and the hash brown casserole, which was pretty okay. The coffee was fantastic, I had the hazelnut truffle and he had the vanilla fudge. I seriously love all the coffee I have ever had here, and the tomato basil soup isn't too bad either!

I have to give this place some love. I appreciate so much the comfy atmosphere where nobody gives you dirty looks if you set up camp for a couple of hours. (Free wifi, too)! Also, where else can you get a delicious basket o' cinnamon toast?! Nice strong coffee, too. No complaints here -- but if I had some, I think I'd be inclined to try taking them up on their sign, which says to let the owner know if there are problems and even provides an e-mail address. Hooray Republic!

I'm new to memphis and have been looking around for a new coffee shop to call home. This one is okay but they have unreliable wifi and very dark coffee.

My mocha was okay, nothing spectacular. It probably would have tasted better if it was hot. The wait staff was nice enough, though kind of annoying in that they were yelling out orders across the room and complaining about their lives for all to hear. Will probably stick to Starbucks next time.

The service was great, the music was chill and a cool atmosphere with free Wi-Fi makes this a new personal fave! The sandwiches are fresh with a good price point. Oh! The coffee is good, too.

Maybe I ordered the wrong thing, but I was totally underwhelmed by this Memphis landmark. I had a sandwich wrap, that was dry and tasteless. Maybe the coffee is better, but all I had was lunch. I did like the variety on the menu, but if everything is as bland as this wrap, I say skip it. And a special shout-out to my horrible waitress who acted like I was bothering her by ordering a bite to eat. You remember the snotty girl in high school who acted like she hated to be in the same room as you, well, she's working at Republic Coffee now.

The Vegas breakfast is delicious! The atmosphere is great, with a lot more space inside than it might initially appear. There is a fairly large selection of coffee and other beverages. All in all, a nice place to chat with friends, get some work or reading done, or just chill with a snack or drink.

  • Josh K.

I personally picked Republic for their freshly roasted coffee and brought the group to this place for breakfast. Everybody enjoyed the atmosphere. There were board games for the little ones and wi-fi for the techy ones. A friend also pointed out how the place reminded her of a similar coffee shop in Berkeley. We also noticed a lot of bikers in spandex frequented the shop and later found out on the way out that the shop is not too far from a popular trail. Anyway, breakfast was good, baked items were delicious, and coffee was fulfilling. We all left feeling delicious!

Great place to study and work with their long hours, free wifi, and endless coffee. The service leaves something to be desired though. Long waits and the place seems consistently understaffed. Good food in tiny portions.

Let me preface this by saying that I've only been here twice. Monday, I called to see if the conference room was open. It was. Fast phone pick up time, very polite, very quick with a response, & great overall service. Tuesday, I walked in to go straight to the back. It was quiet but friendly & somewhat busy. No one bothered us the entire time which was nice. The parking was very crammed & difficult to move around but I can't place a blame on RC for that. Later on, as some of our party had to leave, we got a booth. It was a great atmosphere. We moved several times but no glares, no problems. My friend, however, felt like she got very bad service at the front while waiting for her tea. Not sure - I wasn't there. Overall, I felt like this was a very positive experience. I will definitely return for other business-related talks. In fact, I am returning this Saturday! Pro: Wi-Fi, quick, quiet, & roomy. Con: Parking & prices.

This place really surprised me. I came here for a client meeting and ended up trying iced coffee and hot coffee and even a few pastries. I love little coffee shops with signature drinks and several snack options. This is a great, quiet place to bring clients and we even pick up coffee grounds from here to brew at home.

Great service and coffee. Wonderful place to work individually on wifi, meet people for meetings one-on-one or groups in the room in the back.

Republic has always been one of my favorite little coffee shops in Memphis. It's kind of like the hipster hang out but not quite into midtown. They offer free wifi and a decent assortment of coffees and food items. I'm partial to their vanilla latte or white chocolate mochas. If you check-in into Foursquare, they offer you a free coffee of the day. They unfortunately do not have this wonderful accommodation to Yelp as of yet. Their food menu is pretty diverse. They serve a mean breakfast, but you're going to pay for it if you know what I mean. I enjoy their Vegas breakfast. It consists of a bagel that is pre- buttered and has cream cheese on it, topped with honey and served with two slices of bacon and two scrambled eggs. A decent assortment for $8. It may sound a bit pricey, but the taste will make you lose your mind and disregard the fact you're dishing nearly $10 for a $4 meal. As far as dinner items, I am faithfully committed to their Roman mac and cheese that comes with cheddar and parmesan. MMMM sinfully delish. It's $3. I could honestly eat this everyday, but that would not be a healthy choice now would it? I love Republic. I genuinely find this place as a haven to retreat to for when I just want some peace and quiet, and when I want to relax. Yeah, you are going to have the hustle and bustle of the place, but it damn for sure makes for some fun people watching. As far as ambiance, you will come to appreciate the art work that is on sale on the walls. They rotate the pieces every few weeks, and all of the work is done by local artists. If you want a good, read, notice they have donated books on the shelve when you first walk in the door too. Friendly service, and friendly Republic.

Whenever I go to a coffee shop, I like to see how the coffee is, ho comfortable it is, and how the wifi is. In Republic Coffee, the coffee is pretty good, and the place is comfortable enough. It was quiet, and it seemed to be clean. The things I found annoying were that the employees weren't very attentive personally. When I came to the counter, the girl there just sat there chatting with someone else. Only the other person apologized for holding me up. When I asked what was good cold, the girl behind the counter said, "iced coffee." Not too creative there, huh girl? Then I went to sit down, pulled out my computer, and could not get online, even though a big sign at the front said WIFI! I asked a girl who was cleaning tables, and she said the wifi was down. THAT WOULD BE GOOD TO KNOW WHEN I ORDERED! I HAD IMPORTANT EMAILS TO DEAL WITH AND LIMITED TIME! I got it go, and headed out to find a place that actually had wifi. Republic Coffee needs a coup de 'tat.

Everyone knows Republic has great coffee, breakfasts, etc. ~BUT~ I just had an AWESOME Cobb Salad for lunch! Chock-full of fresh veggies, meats, cheeses, nuts, olives, and BACON! And all on a bed of nice mixed greens (no Iceberg - yuck!). It's a BIG Salad that would make Jerry Seinfield proud!!

I love the thought of supporting local independently owned business, but in this case it's easy to actually do so. My family and I have been many times and we always take folks who are visiting us for the coffee and the food. My sister loves the home made chi and I love the mocha soy coffee and I don't even have to tell them "no whip." They get it that if you're ordering soy you don't want whipped cream. For a small coffee shop they have quite a varied menu from home made soups, salads, and a great kid friendly casual brunch on Saturday and Sunday. My favorite breakfast is their strawberry-cream cheese stuffed French toast. You can get it by itself or as a whole breakfast with eggs and bacon or fruit. At lunch they have wonderful sandwiches with real chicken cooked on site, turkey, smoked salmon made fresh there, or one of my favorites that you could actually have for breakfast. I can't remember the name but it is made of egg whites scrambled with fresh spinach and mushrooms with cheese on a croissant. They will also make this without the bread if you ask. If you get a side dish try the carrot soufflé, which is out of this world. if you have a sweet tooth there are always cakes and cheesecakes with a homemade seriously chocolate one when they have it. I have ordered sandwich and fruit trays there for meetings, but I hear that they are going into catering now and hope to see a menu soon. One of the things I like is that they have a meeting room in the back that I've used for a volunteer group, as we ordered food, the room was free. This is one of my favorite places to just hang and relax while getting good food and excellent coffee.

Don't linger here! Republic Coffee's owner asked us to leave after 1 hour today. We'd eaten and our money and cards were on the table for 10 minutes waiting for the waitress to settle our checks. Rather than coming to close us out, he said, "Ladies, I've got to ask you to leave." There was one couple waiting for a table. So ends the tradition of eating breakfast there every Sunday, or for that matter, ever again. We've come here because it's convenient and we thought it's nice to support local business. We're regulars who come for a meal and conversation. We don't hang out for hours with a computer and a cup of coffee. The owner recognized us but said, "I've got to turn tables." I understand, but hey, that's the last time he'll turn mine. Asking customers to leave when they've been waiting for their check to be picked up is rude. And it's not like the food is that great. The service is mediocre at best. An hour time limit? Absurd. This place doesn't deserve more than a passing glance.

Republic Coffee has become my go-to breakfast spot, because it remains a hidden treasure. I know dozens of people who love it and eat there regularly, but it's off the beaten path enough that not every senior citizen lookin' for a Perkins fix can stop by. The coffee is fantastic, though I'm not sure why. It's nothing my palate can discern, it's just GOOD coffee. And the cheese grits.....oh, how my tongue starts dancing when I think of their cheese grits. If it were socially acceptable to carry around a trough of their grits, I'd sign up in a heartbeat. Their lunch menu and homemade desserts are also superb. We typically go here with out of town guests, and we've always had a great time. All the servers are friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is charming and cozy.

I've always really liked this place; I started coming here when it opened in 2008 before I moved from Memphis, and I still come back a lot. When it first opened, I told everyone about it and encouraged them to support it. I usually come here to work and drink coffee, but occasionally also for breakfast or lunch. The food is fine and the coffee is good, and it's just a cool place in an area that needs local businesses. My biggest concern, however, has to do with the layout of the place and its service methods. I often only want coffee, so I'm usually told to seat myself and wait for a waiter/waitress to order the cup of coffee I want instead of getting it at the counter. However, sometimes I'm either ignored or overlooked, and often this is (very reasonably) because they're too busy to deal with me. So often my strategy is, unfortunately, to wait fifteen minutes before a waiter/waitress shows up, and then to go up front and get my drink myself. Usually during this point, I'm not even noticed . For instance, recently my wife and I seated ourselves. After about eight or nine minutes, a waitress had only brought us menus, so I went to the front to order our drinks. Then, after about ten minutes more, my wife went to front to order her breakfast. At this point, the cashier, seeing her frustration, gave her half off of the meal, which was very nice. The people here are nice, and were genuinely concerned about their experience. But we still had to bus our own table and no one ever acknowledged us again. Upon asking where I could deposit our plates and cups, someone told me that the were short one server, but the servers kept walking by us, seeing all the plates on our table, and doing nothing. I realize that the wait staff relies on tips, and that waitresses are required to work on a lot of tables, but is it possible to also figure out some way for customers who only want drinks that can be prepared quickly, or who know exactly what they want, to order at the front and serve themselves? Perhaps even a section could be dedicated to this. I'd like to identify myself as a customer who wants the experience of a coffee shop that serves food, rather than a full-blown restaurant. Perhaps, I'm alone, but that's I'm posting on Yelp: to see if anyone agrees or disagrees with this experience and outlook. Again, I constantly tell people to go to the Republic because it's a local business and I want to support it. But I've have some frustrating experiences recently, and I'd really encourage management to rethink some of their serving and seating strategies.

Like I said before, I love this place. The food is solid, coffee is good, I've been here too many time to count to do work. The owner has contacted me and has offered refund and together we'll be accountable to keep track if this happens again. The owner is standing behind his customers and wants to make sure his staff is honest and use this situation as a learning opportunity. Republic will definitely be seeing me in their booths again.

I have been going to this coffee house for almost two years and the difference in quality from what it was and now is depressing. On one hand I can still say that the wait staff and baristas are wonderful. They work very hard to see that their patrons needs are addressed in a courteous and timely manor. That being said, is there anybody managing this place? I am a decaf drinker, yet they have been without it for over a week. They are not shining as the "Best Coffee House" (according the Flyer) should. They are constantly running out of syrups, and simple staples that should always be on hand. Also, they only seem to put in half the effort on many of the menu items. For example, they make excellent bacon, waffles and pancakes, but the artificial maple syrup ruins the flavor. Granted I'm no paid chef, but it's not hard to create a simple syrup with fruit from the previous day for these items. Cost effective and tasty. Then there are the biscuits, canned biscuits, not very impressive when they bother to stock them. Quick breads are named this because they are easy and fast to make, and the dough freezes like a dream, homemade and tasty. But, if baking is such a trial, there are many local bakers who can produce wonderful breads, cookies and pies that are made right here. Why not join the locally produced food community and leave the industeral breads on the shopping club shelf. Lastly windows are a wonderful source of natural light, but without some form of shading many clients avoid the booths with morning exposure opting not to be grilled themselves. These issues all fall on the shoulders of management, run properly this restaurant / coffee house will have earned it's standing in the "Best of" category. Maybe Republic should consider a change of personnel on that level. Otherwise it is destined to continue to slide down until it becomes a feature worthy of Andy Wises attention.

This place has a great ambiance with quick and efficient service. Though the booths are a bit worn and the tables a bit old, this place nevertheless has great food and even better coffee. I have had the "ahab" which is salmon, cream cheese, onions, and capers on a bagel and it was phenomenal. What better way to start off your day than with salmon for breakfast? My breakfast was accompanied by a plain latte (not a fan of sugary coffee) and it was very good. After consuming my latte the waitress offered me regular coffee free of charge, not a bad deal. Finally, this place has WIFI and is perfect if you are looking for a quick bite to eat and quality coffee while you do a bit of work.

We were turned onto Republic doing a quick search on Yelp for coffee shops in the area being that we were just visiting Memphis for the weekend. It was a delight to find a specialty local coffee shop amongst the sea of Starbucks that came up in the search. Ready to eat and relax with a cup of coffee we sped down to Walnut Grove and after circling the area for a parking space for a bit we headed inside to see what Republic was all about. Upon entering we quickly scanned the coffee board and the menu which excited us with the diversity of what was listed on both. A server let us know we could sit anywhere since we were dining in and a waitress would be with us shortly. Our waitress, Ashley, attended to us shortly thereafter taking our drink order and giving us a moment to decide on what we were going to eat. She complemented my fiancée which made for a pleasant start to the experience. I was a huge fan of the eclectic nature of the furnishings inside in addition to the option to grab a seat outside on the patio. I will agree with other reviewers that the blinds did dim the inside a bit which was noticeable but didn't necessarily take away from the experience. I'm assuming it is intentional and decided to roll with it. Our coffees, one latte and one drip coffee served black, came quickly and in a variety of mugs. Again for me a positive as it shows the cafe's personality. And as Ashley placed the creamers in front of me she carefully stacked them into a pyramid shape and upon me not using them carried them away in the same fasion which was awesome. The drip coffee was enjoyable and brewed well. The latte was tasty. I'm not sure what kind of beans they use as far as roast proximity and such so I can't comment on that aspect but the baristas seemed in control of their coffee drinks as far as execution is concerned. We ordered a hodgepodge of items including the Prague eggs benedict (which includes mushrooms as the meat section of the stack), the biscuits and gravy and the ahab (nova lox bagel with house smoked salmon). Our food came within a perfectly normal amount of time and was served at the appropriate temperature (I'm including things like this as other reviewers mentioned otherwise). The biscuits (two cut in half and served open faced) and gravy were completely satisfying. The bottoms of the biscuits were burnt which obviously shouldn't have gone out this way but aside from that the dish was on point. The eggs benedict had wonderfully poached eggs, tasty mushrooms, and house made hollandaise with a dash of paprika on top. If you've ever made hollandaise at home you'll appreciate the effort that goes into this. This plate was served with two pan seared asparagus spears which were well cooked (just enough crunch to them) and an ice cream scoop-sized portion of hash brown casserole. The casserole was a bit over salted but delightfully cheesy. The salmon bagel was great with the house smoked salmon (served in thick filets) offering an extra special touch to one of my favorite breakfast options. Our waitress was consistently attentive and pleasantly positive which made for an enjoyable experience. The bill for the two coffee drinks and three plates was $26 which I found to be completely reasonable. From the sounds of other reviewers experiences it seems that Republic can improve in the consistency realm (both on the food and service fronts) but I can say that our visit today was everything I expected from a local coffee house. This is just my opinion so take it or leave it as you may but sometimes we have to enjoy things for what they are not what we decide for them to be. As long as Republic is serving up spectacular coffee and good eats I'll certainly be back. It's great that Fitz responds to people who have taken the time to review his establishment and hopefully Republic will continue to delight both Memphis natives and visitors alike. In an age of coffee concentrate tins and ubiquitous fast served coffee houses, I am glad to find a relaxing environment in which to enjoy hand crafted coffee drinks with personality. I look forward to coming back upon my next trip to Memphis to see what's new or memorably the same since our last time in.

I have been sick for a week and finally, this morning, I was ready to eat something but not necessarily ready to cook it myself! I am a lifelong Memphian but haven't lived in the Midtown Area for many years so I actually googled for "brunch" to find somewhere to go! No IHOP or CK's for this girl after a week of the BRAT diet!!! and not a huge fan of Bayou's over-priced brunch...so Republic Coffee pops up and is close so off me and the boys (6 & 4) go. All the outside tables were taken so we head inside...there are mostly 2 tops but a few larger booths and one very large community style table. A voice asks me how many and before I could get out 3, I realize its a reunion. Lori, an old friend of mine from way back, seated us and waited on us! I cant say if everyone gets good service, but we received excellent service (maybe a little special treatment). The boys had ala carte waffles and I went to order the Tupelo (French toast stuffed with Strawberries, bacon, eggs and choice of hash browns or cheese grits). Lori asked if I liked Eggs Benedict and suggested I get the Madrid instead because I can get the Tupelo anytime during the week. She also recommended the cheese grits with hot sauce. I yield to folk who work in places, if they don't know whats good there is likely a real problem! The boys waffles came out quickly, and mine followed shortly behind. The Madrid is a non traditional Eggs Benedict "Republic Style" served on biscuits in lieu of English Muffin and with a black Forrest Ham, side of fresh fruit and steamed asparagus. The eggs were poached perfectly, and the Black Forrest ham was so very yummy. Sweet but with just the right salty goodness to really pull it together. The hollandaise sauce was very good and rich and there was the right amount not too little and not smothering the entire dish. I didn't think I would like the biscuit substitution but it worked! The asparagus was delicious, perfect crispness and very lightly seasoned allowing the taste to shine. The cheese grits were good. A little dense for my liking but the flavors were spot on; not over buttery and good cheese blend. (and yes, Lori the hot sauce was perfect!) My boys ate more off my plate than they did their waffles! Today, I just wanted a good hearty brunch and I definitely got it! I must also say the atmosphere was very laid back and friendly even though it was crowded and there was a rush of activity with wait staff zooming about. I know its a Coffee House and I didn't talk "Coffee"...I just got plain ole black coffee this trip but we WILL be back!

They were out of stuff for the first 3 drinks I tried to order off their menu. Ended up getting a plain vanilla latte, and it wasn't anything special. I really wanted to like this spot, but if you can't keep your ingredients stocked, I can't drive 10 minutes to support your business.

When I first walked in to Republic Coffee I actually felt like I was no longer in Memphis. This place reminds me more of the coffee shop/wine bar franchises I used to see up in the midwest. I think it has to do with the relatively crisp service, dark wood paneling, and overall decor and cleanliness. It's not really a "hippie" coffee shop where a lot of people just go to hang out (although there's absolutely nothing wrong with that). It's just a space that serves good food and coffee late into the night, gives reliable Wi-Fi, and keeps the music down to a basically audible level. In my mind Republic Coffee keeps up an atmosphere that is much more conducive to working than what you'll find at most coffee shops in town. It's open until midnight, and you can always find a table. I appreciate that.

Republic Coffee is my kind of place. Chill atmosphere, modern but cool decor with little personal and quirky touches all over the place. Local art on display, free Wi-Fi and a great food/drink menu do the coffee shop wonders. Super location, also. The chai is real tea, scratch-made and is positively delicious. Tip: Try it iced! The food (down to dressings and sauces) is all prepared in the kitchen from scratch. The brunch menu is one of the coolest things offered. I never would have believed I would like poached eggs (eggs benedict is served), but it freakin' rocks. Saturdays and Sundays, until 2PM. The baristas are knowledgeable and have lovely and quirky personalities. The servers are experienced and friendly. Great place to study because they are open late and have internet. Great place to meet up with folks, chill by yourself, or just grab some coffee and go! Stop by whenever you have a moment to explore--you won't regret it :) Recommended food: hummus, stuffed french toast, hashbrown casserole McKnight sandwich. Drinks: iced coffee, earl grey tea, mocha latte, Walnut Grove Colada (smoothie).

I love this place for a few reasons. They stay open late for students during finals and they have a friendly, yet sometimes musically over-the-top staff! Coffee is roasted in store but still average in my opinion. Free wifi and great hours are really nice because most places close around 10p while they stay open till midnight! Only downside: after dark it is located adjacent to a rougher neighborhood and I thus had my car broken into once and have been propositioned for money while getting out of my car late at night at least three times, but hey it's Memphis right?? Otherwise, top 3 in my coffee shop list of Memphis. Ah and music is often nice but sometimes too loud for studying and those seeking pseudo intellectual conversation.

We needed breakfast after shopping at the local farmer's market. Republic Coffee was on our way home and stopped in with our dogs. They were dog friendly and provided a big bucket of H2O for our dogs. We settle and ordered our breakfast. I had the Nashville with waffles, eggs, bacon and hash browns. My girlfriend went with Vegas that came with eggs, bagel with cream cheese and honey, bacon, and cheese grits. The hash brown was delicious with a spice on top. Eggs was good and I always love my bacon. Waffle was ok. I like a little crunchy waffles and was a little soggy. The star of my girlfriend dish was bagel on cream cheese over honey. Honey and cheese makes for perfect combination. Overall, we had an enjoyable breakfast. Food was good, weather couldn't be nicer. RC was nice to our dogs and that's worth 5 stars in any establishment.

I had a great lunch today at Republic Coffee. Much more than just good coffee, the food here is superb. I had the Tommy Chong, a sandwich with smoked mushrooms, spinach, onions and roasted red peppers on a soft ciabatta roll. I added Swiss cheese to mine, and it was absolutely incredible. I also had a side of hummus, which was also delicious. Sadly, at a 107 degrees today, it was just too hot to order a coffee. But my daughter had an Iced Chai Latte that she said was awesome. Oh, and they have free Wi-Fi too, folks.

Republic is one of my favorite places to go for coffee and to work on my laptop. I've come here several times and worked for 2-5 hours with no rush and no glares from anyone. The servers always refill coffee and water, and I always make sure to tip them well. I've gotten the chocolate chip muffins and several of their bagel sandwiches, and they are always great. If you are looking for a place to work/enjoy coffee or lunch this is it.

I want to like Republic, I really do. They have great food, the most delicious hummus, wonderful coffee drinks and pretty delicious pastries. That said, their service is deplorable. I have given them a second chance... A third chance.. A fourth chance and after last night their last chance. Service is extremely slow here. The past two times service has been MIA to the point where I have finally just walked out. Last night, I walk in to find no one working at the bar so I give it a little time.. Stand there about ten minutes then decide to leave.. As I walk out here comes the " Barista" walking in.. As she sees I have decided to leave.. She proceeds to turn around and sit back down with her friends outside. This was the final straw which is a real shame because as a student I appreciated the great food, great prices and the late hours. I think I have finally learned my lesson & will stick to my FRIENDLY neighborhood Starbucks.

This is my second and, probably, last time visiting Republic Coffee. While I do like the layout of the place (it's spacious and the seating arrangement is decent) I have to call out the service for being horrendous. The food is ok (paid almost 10 bucks for a slight above average sandwich). I'm not sure how good (or bad) the coffee is, but I imagine it's ok. All I know for sure is that the service was painfully bad...as in the worst service I've ever experienced in my life (and that's saying something). I think the ONE server for the entire busy place was new or something, but it still doesn't really excuse how non-existent the service was. You'd think the manager of the place would use a little sense and get maybe two people out there on the floor since one person obviously has no clue what she's doing. I did see one lady start helping out a little later after sitting at the bar for forever, but it was too little too late. Why exactly was she sitting on her butt for over an hour while the one server with a not so great attitude herself is running frantically all over the place? Ridiculous. There's just something about the staff...they're kind of hipster, kind of biker bar, mostly not exactly pleasant in demeanor. I'm thinking there should be a sign out front that says, "All who enter BEWARE...you will receive horrible service and the food is merely average."

The coffee was good. The scramble eggs and bacon very good. But the waffle was a bit like rubber. No flavor at all. Even the syrup was tasteless. Also the plate smelled of dish soap.

Different taste on the coffee. Unique if I may say. One thing that did bother me though, everybody seemed to a bit uncomfortable with black people. I know this sounds strange. But, I know that feeling really well when I am experiencing it. And when I say everybody, I mean everybody. Customers and employees. It was as if we had walked into this place and we got that " you don't belong here" look. However, the geographical location of the coffee shop does lend it self to a bit more awareness and I know that blacks are usually treated with suspicion wherever they go. It comes with being black. Don't get me wrong the employees were nice but they could not hide that feelin they were emanating. By the way the coffee was good!

I'm extremely shocked at the stellar reviews that Republic Coffee has received. When it first opened, a friend of mine raved about the new coffee shop in her neighborhood. I was excited to try a new place. The interior was dark and eclectic, which I liked. It has a really cozy feel. The service, on the other hand ,is inexcusably horrible. I had no desire to ever go back. Well, almost a year after my first poor experience, the same friend suggested that we go to Republic for coffee and a bite, after our shopping excursion - she said that they recently added brunch items to their menu. The server was very attentive. I had the Jackson (biscuits smothered in molasses!) and hot tea. The food and tea were good and the service was a complete 180 from what I had experienced before. On a bike ride, I suggested to several friends (4 others), that we stop for coffee and brunch at Republic Coffee. It was close to our route and a few people had never been to the place. It was worse than my first visit. We didn't receive our drinks or had our order taken for at least 20 minutes after we were seated. We were never asked for coffee or water refills. The food was still good, however. I had the salmon & caper bagel sandwich. The salmon was smoked and the capers complimented the sandwich quite well. However, the brunch left a bad taste in our mouths because the service was so atrocious. We had to practically beg for our checks. After sitting with our checks, ready to pay, for about 20 minutes, and no sign of our server, we just went to cash register to pay...where, again we waited. Although, it wasn't too long before someone came to the register to help us. The experience was so bad that I apologized profusely to all of my friends for suggesting Republic Coffee. Afterward, I even reached out to the coffee shop to tell them about my experience...maybe they were short staffed that day...I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. Well, no one ever bothered to get back with me and tell me that they were sorry I had a bad experience or even, to go to &*^# . Nothing. Until they do something about their poor service, I won't go back and will discourage others from wasting their time, as well.

Republic Coffee is my favorite place for coffee in Memphis. Whether you want to get some quick take out, grab a coffee, have lunch with friends, or get some studying done, Republic Coffee is a great place to go. They have a wide selection of flavored coffee drinks and teas as well as delicious breakfast, brunch, and lunch menus. My personal favorites are the carrot souffle, the Ahab sandwich at brunch, and the Madrid for brunch. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and they have free Wi-Fi!

The coconut frappe rocks!!! If your obsessed with coconut, like I am, you will love it. I love the atmosphere in here as well. The only thing I can complain about is that wait staff. They can be a little, how to say this nicely, ill-efficient. I have to say though the coffee, food, and atmosphere out weigh the other issue that I mentioned before.

As a college student, I really appreciate Republic's unlimited regular coffee for $2.25 for as long as I'm studying. They've got everything I need: wireless, endless caffeine, and a cozy feel. Their coffee is very good too. Sure, you sometimes have to get up to get a refill but I'd prefer that to being pestered by a waiter asking me if I want a refill and interrupting my flow. There's also a little-used pool table in the back which is a great place to take a break from studying with a friend or two. People-watching at Republic is another great way to take a break. I haven't tried any of their food, but their coffee alone is a great reason to come. It's my favorite coffee shop nearby and I live in the Cooper-Young district which has several options when it comes to coffee. I'd suggest you bring headphones though to cover up the background music. It tends to be louder than I can take if I really really need to focus on something. My only other complaint is the poor parking situation.

Perhaps not the most helpful review as I'm not a coffee drinker, but ... I love the sandwiches - McKnight, Daisy and The King are all excellent. I'm there a lot, so the servers know me well enough to bring me an ice-cold Diet Coke in a can when I walk in, which means a lot. Love the atmosphere - it's one of my favorite places to work when I get cabin fever at home or for meetings. Laid back, comfortable. If it were closer to my home I'd be there every day. As it is, I'm there at least once a week, even with a 20-minute drive.

Republic Coffee is an aesthetically pleasing place to be. Great dark, muted colors on the walls which makes the revolving art installments, all local artists, stand out even more. Strong wi-fi throughout and good smells, but the service leaves a LOT to be desired. I've regularly sat for 10 or 15 minutes before walking to the coffee bar myself to order something and have had to wait for up to 20 minutes to get a check when requested. Other than that, brunch is great, simple, and filling. I won't stop going just because the service is horrible, the atmosphere (sounds, smells, tones) is almost enough to make that easy to overlook.

Racist baristas/waitresses. I love the food/coffee...but this was the worst service I've ever experienced here. Rude behavior & once seated, complete lack of service. Refilled own coffee 3 odd times. Will not be returning (or at least when these ladies are working). Disappointing.

I had to get some work done this weekend but completely loathed the thought of being in my apartment one more moment. I set out down Poplar from out east trying to think of anything other than a Starbuck's that would meet my needs. Many places with wifi just don't feel work appropriate. Swanky's for example....I would feel like a dud opening a laptop in Swanky's on a Sunday night. I'm sure nobody would care, but I would feel weird. I digress. I finally ended up miles down Poplar and remembered Republic Coffee behind the mammoth Memphis library. I made my way inside wondering if my lack of college student hipster vibe would give me away immediately. Fortunately I was accepted with open arms. Republic Coffee ended up being the perfect spot. I was able to do my work, but I was also able to get real food. (Starbuck's food is not real food.) I had a spinach/mushroom scramble with bacon and some potato thing that was delicious. The food was great and the service was great as well. My only complaint is the internet - the only reason I'm not slapping 5 stars on this one. When I go to a coffee shop I expect excellent internet. The internet signal was spotty and made for a rather frustrating time trying to work through a VPN. Pulling my hair wasn't an option but that's the feeling I had over the speed and signal. The waitress didn't seem too concerned about the problem. No big deal though. Everything else was so great that I can't complain too much. I'll be back.

I've had better experiences here recently. Kenneth seems to be the guy to serve you. And I appreciated the late hours during exam season. Thank you for the student friendly atmosphere.

Awesome local food. My favorites are the smoked salmon and the brisket dishes. Great food. Great coffee. Great people. Wi-Fi, too! This is my favorite hangout spot in Memphis!

1.) Free wifi 2.) Open til midnight EVERY night. 3.) Great latte selection - every syrup you could imagine 4.) Comfortable, eclectic atmosphere 5.) Dedicated to the community 6.) Service is hit or miss 7.) Don't get the chai latte, but the vanilla latte is great.

I'm not sure I've ever written this sentence before: The coffee is huge. This local joint is funky on the inside. One of those places with character in the best way. Loads of seats and booths for working. And they even have table service (although we waited for 10 minutes before someone realized we were there. Our waitress was sitting at a table chatting with her friend). Strangely, we didn't mind so much. And I usually mind about that stuff. We just chatted away. If you're in town, definitely swing by this place.

I help run a book swap meet up in the area (if you want to know more, go to meetup.com/Book-Swappers… ). People kept recommending hosting it at Republic Coffee, so I thought I would host a swap meet there. The parking is just OK, it could be better. The place is fairly small. However, the wait staff was freakin awesome. Friendly, kind, and inquisitive in a good way (e.g, one of the waiters was totally interested in coming to the next book swap.) I asked the manager if I could put up a sign on the front door that said "BOOK SWAP MEET UP" and they were totally cool with it. They were also cool with separate checks and our meals / coffee were delivered in a timely fashion. I had some type of raspberry latte and it was delicious. They also have free WiFi, which is a big plus. While I'm not sure I would come here again for a book swap meet up, if I was in the area I would definitely stop by.

2 group presentations this week and a strong urge to get out of the apartment lead me to try out 2 coffee shops in 2 days. Saturday was Otherlands and today was Republic. I can't figure out if Otherlands is that much better or if Republic is just that bad. First off, I don't know if our waitress was just having a bad day or if she thinks her unpleasant demeanor is charming. Either way, she couldn't have tried to be more put-off by having to take our order. When she finally brought our drinks she asked us to pay at the same time. Ok, I understand that she was going home and wanted to settle up but again, the way you say things is just as important as what you say. Of course, poor service can be easily forgotten if the coffee is good. Much like Otherlands, the coffee is good but not great. I mean, really, it was no better than Otherlands or Starbucks...both of which are less expensive and, in my opinion, offer better service. Perhaps the one saving grace of Republic is that they do offer free wifi and ample seating. One final positive is that the crowd at Republic is made up of less people that look like they just got done being extras in the latest Of Montreal video so if you are looking to avoid hipsters, this will be your coffee shop of choice.

Recently, the hubby and I had lunch at Republic Coffee, a quaint coffeehouse in Midtown, Memphis. Committed to Slow Food and sustainable resources, the folks at Republic Coffee aren't afraid to inform their customers about the admirable steps they've taken to being a "green" establishment. When you first walk into Republic Coffee, the first thing you'll notice is that it doesn't look much different from other coffeehouses: they provide free WiFi, and art produced by local talent decorates the wall. Alt-rock hits from the 90s play quietly, and there are several students with laptops set up at the booths along the walls. Republic Coffee has a drink menu that puts Starbucks to shame. I began my meal with a vanilla nut latte frappé, a frothy blend of vanilla and hazelnut syrups, espresso, and ice. It was a delicious beginning to the meal that even my husband, Tom, (a non-coffee drinker) could appreciate. For my meal, I chose the McKnight, a turkey sandwich on ciabatta bread with cheddar cheese, herb aioli and a strawberry reduction. It was absolutely delicious; there's no other way to describe it. The combination of flavors exploded on my tongue. For my side item, I chose two (I'm greedy that way :P): the carrot soufflé and the Roman macaroni and cheese. The mac n' cheese had good flavor and texture. I wish it had a bit more salt, but otherwise a great take on a classic Southern accompaniment. The carrot soufflé was a huge surprise. I'm not a huge fan of carrots (but I'm always up for trying new things). It looked a bit like mashed sweet potatoes, but the flavor was out of this world. Delicate and sweet, it was some of the best carrots I've ever eaten...period. Tom chose The King: a smoked BBQ chicken sandwich with chipotle sauce and slaw. In a city full of pulled BBQ sandwiches with coleslaw, it was a decent representation. The chipotle didn't offer much of a kick. It was good, but not great. Tom had a bit of entrée envy :) For his side, the cheese grits, a milled version complete with cheddar and Gouda. I thought they were tasty, but I really enjoy grits; Tom does not. In an attempt to try new things, he ordered the grits in hopes that they would change his mind about grits overall. They didn't do it for him, but I appreciated the use of Gouda (which is not a standard cheese used with grits). There was also a nice smokiness that added to the complexity of the dish. Final Impressions: Have some coffee! It's great! And while your there, try the McKnight sandwich with a side of carrot soufflé. You won't be disappointed. Everything at Republic Coffee is deliciously fresh and locally grown. It's obvious to see how the attention to detail that they take with their food and drink will satisfy your hunger whether it's 8:00 in the morning or 8:00 at night.

Coffee: Republic is primarily a coffee shop, so their coffee is really good. It's smooth, mild, and definitely better than instant coffee. Biscuit: The biscuit was disappointingly dry and flavorless. It desperately needed the butter that came on the side and a big swallow of water to wash it down. Bacon: Republic's bacon was alright, if a little tough. It wasn't too crunchy, though, and it had a lot of flavor. Scrambled Eggs: Again, it's hard to screw up scrambled eggs. Republic's had great texture and taste. (Sidenote - the menu said that all of the eggs were scrambled. I'm not sure why, unless they're using powdered eggs.) Pancake: Republic doesn't have pancakes. Grits: The Tupelo breakfast came with cheese grits. Sadly, the grits would have probably been better without the cheese. The texture was a little closer to couscous than most grits (which was good) and they did have flavor. Too bad the flavor wasn't very good. Service: The service at Republic was pretty good for the first part of the meal. My order was taken quickly, the food showed up in a reasonable amount of time, and there were coffee refills. When it was time to pay, the waitress was nowhere to be found. Atmosphere: Because Republic is primarily a coffee shop, it's totally fine to stick around and get some work done. There's local art on the walls and decent music playing over the speakers. It's a little dark inside, though, so you may want to sit next to a window. Price: The total came to $10.65, which seems a little pricey for the amount and quality of the food.

Can't say anything for the food, though I've heard it's very good, but this is a solid little coffee shop if you're looking for a place to relax and get some work done. Coffee is pretty good and cheap and, most importantly, free to refill as long as you're hanging out. You might have to get up to get the refill, but a server will occasionally walk around and freshen up your cup if you need it.

I haven't explored their brunch menu but it looks good. For lunch though, this place is just alright. I like their drinks but don't love them, and I tolerate the blaring commercial radio. It seems like the main draw here is that they have free wi-fi, which bespeaks, perhaps, how boring this cafe actually is -- not counting their Cobb salad, which is awesome.

I love the honey latte at Republic Coffee. I try my best to support local biz and this the best, most convenient coffee shop for that. The service, unfortunately, is hit-or-miss. Not consistently bad or good.

republic is my go-to place for TCB: taking care of business. i can hunker down here for hours at a time to get work done and they keep the coffee coming. the menu is super healthy for the most part, which is a big bonus for me since i'm a nutrition nerd. i almost always get the armstrong (egg whites, spinach and mushroom on croissant) or the hummus. the cobb salad is unbelievably good, but enough for probably three people. maybe three and a half. my only complaint about republic has nothing to do with the food: the wifi is spotty. it's not unusual to be in the middle of something and realize it's not auto-saving because i've lost the signal again. sometimes you actually have to ask them to reset it, which is a pain in the bum. to be totally fair, it has gotten better in recent months. the service can be also be spotty -- i know i'm not top priority when i'm just ordering the bottomless cup of coffee, though. it's also worth noting that these guys give back a ton to the community, and they're committed to serving memphis. they also have a great meeting space that is totally free to reserve, you just have to call ahead.

I am a huge fan of brinner (breakfast for dinner) and have wanted to try Republic Coffee for a while so when a low-key dinner opportunity presented itself, friends and I ended up here. There was some live acoustic music the night we were there (got there around 7:30pm), and that can be nice, but it seemed extra loud. There were moments where I had to yell for my friends to hear and moments where the loudness was jarring. But anyway back to brinner. I ordered the Nashville, which was a waffle served with bacon, eggs, and cheese grits. It was ok. The bacon was very burnt. My friend ordered the Vegas, which I think is a bagel which cream cheese plus the bacon, eggs, and cheese grits. She said her bacon was cooked perfectly. No fair. She loved the eggs; I didn't eat more than one bite of them. They were really peppery and I'm just not a huge pepper fan. We agreed that the cheese grits were good but not spectacular. The cheese was just on top of the grits, and we'd hoped for grits with cheese all up in 'em. Another note: no fountain cokes. Sigh. I settled for iced tea (unsweet only) and it was fine. A friend tried to order a frappe, but they were out of the powder/mix stuff, so our server recommended the same thing just on the rocks instead of frozen, so that was nice. They have a HUGE coffee menu at the table, which I like a lot. I was tempted but ultimately resisted since they were out of frappe mix and since I already had something sweet with my waffles. Next time I'll try the mac n' cheese, which our server recommended, and maybe the che che, which is a bacon-egg-cheese croissant. I did like the atmosphere and the originality enough to go back. Also they have a special brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays until noon or 1, I think.

Memphis is just not a coffee city. It pains me to say this, but it's true. You mention the words "french press" or "pour over" or anything like that in Memphis and you get some blank stares. It's just how it is. I know my beans and I'm admittedly a huge coffee snob. If you are, too, you're just not going to find good coffee in Memphis. That said, Republic has a few things to offer. First off, their iced coffee is actually quite decent. I wouldn't drink it black, but toss in a bit of sugar and a glug of coffee and it's pretty good. I'm not a fan of their hot coffee, but fortunately they serve their iced (which, yes, is brewed differently) year-round. If you're not a ridiculous coffee snob like I am, you may like their hot coffee. It's standard drip. I'm sure it's fine. It's a great environment with wifi and tons of seating (outside and in), TVs, decent bathrooms, and plenty of outlets if you need to get some work done. The staff is friendly and attentive. They have a good menu. The Captain Ahab is awesome as is most of their other sandwiches. I'd steer clear of the hummus, which is a shame because it's homemade and who doesn't love hummus? But it's really not good - at least not when I tried it. They have some great homemade soups and plenty of vegetarian options if that's your thing. Oh, and they're open until midnight every day, which is great if you want to get work done. Also, in my experience, their wifi is VERY spotty, which I actually kind of like because it makes me get more work done, but if you need it, it might not be the best spot for you.

This is one of my favorite places to go with a laptop full of work or with a good book. The delicious coffee possibilities are endless, the wifi is free, and the food can't be beat. For affordable prices you get huge servings. The Prague breakfast is by far my favorite with savory veggies and fresh eggs and sides. The staff is funky and friendly and the atmosphere is great.

Yes, this is the new incarnation of the late night (open 6AM-Midnight) coffee shop, formerly on Madison. Early morning and late night java junkies can get a great cup-o-joe (and soups and sandwiches) in this newly renovated space. Convenient to the library crowd and not too far from the oft beaten track of midtown spots, Republic promises to be a new snug little place, for drinks and conversation. Here's their menu: marksmenus.com/restauran…

Today was my first time eating at the Republic Coffee. I have been at the location before but only with clients and I only experienced the salad that was ordered from the individuals that I was with. With this in mind I decided to try there breakfast for a carry out only. I work close to the shop so it was convenient for me. However when I walked into the shop the cashier was not so pleasant, sliding my receipt, food, and card back to me when I placed the card and signed receipt in her hand. That was not the worst part, when I got back to the office to eat my food I was excited by the look of the food. Well as we know looks can be deceiving, because the taste was horrible. I ordered the Nashville with a side order of cheese grits. The grits were lumpy and smelled bad not to mention the taste was so unbearable. The bacon was burnt along with the hash browns. This is a first and a last for me.

I'd read the reviews that the food is good, but the service is bad at Republic. I'd been dreading that. We finally went on Sunday around 11am and quickly found a table that someone had just vacated. Our waitress came over immediately to clean the table and give us food and coffee menus. I ordered an amaretto frappe and hubby had a mocha. Drinks came out quickly and were absolutely delicious. Despite mine being an iced drink, the coffee was super rich. After asking our waitress for her suggestions, we got the Costa Mesa (stuffed French toast) and Madrid (ham benedict). We weren't asked which side we wanted, as one of us would have tried the cheese grits; but we were both very happy with the decadent hash brown casserole. The poached eggs on the benedict were cooked a little hard, which my husband usually complains about, but he enjoyed the benedicts so much he barely said a word about the eggs. My French toast was also delicious. Next time one of us will definitely ask for grits. The décor is modern, yet cozy and comfortable. Our waitress was nice, efficient, and not obtrusive. The coffee was rich and the food was very tasty. We will definitely be getting on the Greenline for our next visit to Republic, which may be next week. I'm a fan!

Food overpriced. 8.5 dollars for a small sandwich and an large table spoon of hashbrowns. Actual definition of getting ripped off. Coffee is good along with the quiet ambiance. I like how there isn't background music playing like at Starbucks.

Where to start... So we came in and there were no servers. Ordered coffee and some breakfast foods, then we were informed the coffees we just paid for (10.40 before tax for 2 20z cups. Insane price) weren't going to be what we ordered. Out of a flavor, but the frappuccino base is going to be chocolate. Well late to tell us, but we altered the flavors. We got them and they weren't bad, mine literally had no coffee taste and m partner's tasted like t had no sweetness to it. Then we finally got our foods, and it was just cooked badly. Pan was probably up Too high because the bacon was undercooked (the fat almost looked fresh out of package) and the eggs: scrambled on the sandwich were really soft, as in cooked too quickly soft. The hard-fried eggs weren't cooked thoroughly. We asked ten to replace the eggs, and after 15 minutes te eggs were brought out. With a fly on them. Before it got to is. (See pictures, it was a young one under the egg). 28 dollars for undercooked food and coffee-less coffee? Just a shame. Explains why no one else was eating though.

YAY! A true blue coffee shop. I was so happy to run across this place while visiting Memphis. We stopped by twice, once for some caffeine only, and the other for Sunday brunch. The espresso is great and my food was awesome as well. Loved the hash brown casserole. They had interesting eggs benedict combinations. I went with the bbq brisket one. Super good. The baristas are hilarious and our server was so nice. Loved the chill laid back ambience. I will be back.. hopefully soon!

I feel Republic deserved an update to my previous 3-star review. While I don't live in Memphis anymore, I do look back and remember Republic as one of my favorite coffeeshops and one I frequented most often. I spent many, many hours working there, as well as met clients and friends there. Finding seating was never a problem. The fact that breakfast was served all day was awesome. I will look back fondly and if I ever visit Memphis will be sure to drop in. Tip: If you're watching your carbs but still want something fancy, be sure to try a pump of sugarfree raspberry in your drink -- not something I've found at other shops.

I love the atmosphere of this shop and it is great for studying. I used to love meeting up at Republic and I just recently visited this place again after a long while. Unfortunately, or fortunately, the long furlough is because I have found better places for coffee and pastries throughout Memphis. The staff is always friendly and welcoming and the crowd is always interesting. The coffee is good, but nothing I've ordered was so good that it made me want to come back and get it again. I think out of all my visits, I have always tried a new drink because I never found "the one" here--everything is just okay. The pastries are a letdown. They seem to taste like Target or Kroger bakery and usually dried out... they just don't seem fresh. Republic is great if you have never tried any other local shops in town.

I hate to admit this, but in when I am in Memphis, (and even when I am at home) as well as pretty much wherever I am, all too often I go to Starbucks. For various reasons. The more time I am spend in Memphis the better I get to know the area. And such a nice area it is. I have really been branching out my morning coffee stops. I wish I could write a decent review on Republic Coffee, I will have to revisit it at a future time, and spend some time there and get something to eat. I only stopped in here on two occasions for a cup of coffee to go. I was impressed with the cafe itself, a fine selection of intimate seating areas, tables with chairs as well as more comfortable areas, plush chairs and couches, and tables to meet and get some work done. The decor was mellow as a coffee shop/cafe should be,. There is a nice selection of art on the wall, and well chosen colors. The staff was friendly and quick with my order, and the coffee was good and fresh. I am excited to come back the next time I am in Memphis!

I went on a trek here because I wanted to try a different local coffee shop and this was next on my list. I arrived shortly after 8am so I missed the rush hour which was great - I did not feel rushed when placing my order. The gentlemen/barista was very friendly and gave me a warm greeting upon entering which goes a LONG way and made a great impression. I ordered an Americano (to go) with soy....they were out of vanilla so I went with the plain soy. Although I explained to the barista I like my coffee scalding he went to pour cold soy a top of my Americano...thankfully I caught him in time and requested it to be steamed, which he quietly obliged. My bad - every place is different, I am not used to having to request it be steamed but again I am not an expert on proper ordering etiquette. The atmosphere is very laid-back, it's a bit dark and dreary on the inside but overall clean and nothing offensive - it's just an older building and decor is on the darker side. PRO's: -greeted upon walking in by friendly barista -espresso had a great flavor - all and all great cup! -price point reasonable -great variety of coffee -food menu looked very appetizing, although I did not order anything CON's: Why Only 2 Stars: my rating is comparing with other local (901) coffee shops... -Beans are from MS roaster (not 901) -baked goods available for grab and go (costco) -- there are too many "shop 901" bakers to be selling processed goods from Costco (muffins & bagels). Even at the counter were packaged granola bars. -personal preference - prefer a more vibrant scenery inside or outside From other Yelp reads this place is a favorite among many Memphians and I can see why with the friendly service and good coffee. My rating is based on my idea of what it means to support local businesses from one small business owner to another.

One of my favorite things about Memphis is local businesses! Local businesses are the heart, soul, and crown jewel of Memphis in my humble opinion. Republic Coffee Memphis nails it every time. 90% of the time the service is fast, friendly, courteous. The food is good and they are usually accommodating with my substitution requests without any side eyes or cultivated shade. Two drawbacks of notes, there are sometimes (not often) flies or gnats... It's Memphis during the summer, so that's no surprise and it's not a regular occurrence. Also, sometimes they run out of stuff, they're excellent about informing you up front.... so there's no back and forth, guessing game shenanigans. It's a good mix of quiet/sterility and stimuli. Students, entrepreneurs, business professionals, regulars, artists, etc. Located near Binghampton and the University of Memphis Republic is positive representation of the intersections of Memphis culture in a welcoming environment. You can also reserve a conference room and now you can rent office space. As local businesses, especially coffee shops/working spaces go Republic is in my top 5. (*Republic is also the middle ground for the Odd Couple partnership that is my business pal's straight man to my general run amokery...*LOL)

A local Memphis coffeehouse with a homey atmosphere. They have free wifi and local art for sale covering their walls. They have a wide variety of drinks, breakfast items, and sandwiches. I don't drink coffee so I like that they have quite a bit of options of drinks for me to try still. I like that they are not a chain and it seems like a nice place to work, study, or play games with friends. The food was ok but nothing special. Sometimes parking around here is hard to come by during their busier times of the day.

A recent converation I had made me realize that I never updated the rating of this "establishment". The owner contacted me and proceeded to berate me for my review. In the spirit of transpency, below are the first two messages we exchanged. Fitz: Kyle, Yelp asks us to proceed with caution when posting a reply to a review. Further to have "extreme care" when messaging. Well, the customer isn't always right, and what they write isn't always right either. So.... Do us a favor and don't come back. You stated you hate coffee places, you don't find what we do of value, attractive, or valuable. So don't come. You came into a 100 seat diner and ordered togo food from the counter. You can't tell the difference between a Barista and a Server, and you wonder why she seems more attentive to the drinks, when that is her job. She sees 4000 regulars a month who want to be here and they like her. Your pretty low for making reference to anyone's daily hygiene regiment. As the school next door to us, actually has families from the Sudan and they seem to be well spoken and clean. Or did you mean our staff, are you one of those people that thinks a tattoo can be washed off? It's obvious you are a real Yelp baller and play the game well, but your review didn't have anything to do with our place. It was all about you. We can handle critics and make changes sometimes from their suggestions. But there is never any math that works out from what a hater says. If you want a really fine home coffee experience, we would suggest you go with a Jura, and just skip the "ahem, Keurig" its a pretty trendy and not really good coffee experience. It sounds like you wanted a cresandwich from a drive-thru, at a drive-thru price. So next time, go get one. If you want to write a review of Republic, come sit down and find out about Republic, spend a half hour on breakfast, come in on Saturday and blow an hour on brunch or a late lunch. We smoke 100lb of Salmon here a week. 20lb at a time to keep it fresh. I am sorry you couldn't try the Calkins, its the bomb. Number #31 on the list of things the new Griz owner should know about Memphis per the C.A. So, either don't come back, or do come in with an open mind. Maybe then your review will be about what we are and do here, not what you hated before you ever came. Because Kyle, just like you not being a non-profit, my servers aren't either. So your review makes you funny to your followers, earns you another checkin badge, lalalalala, but what it does really, is take money out of the pockets of a Mom who works here for tips when someone visiting town or looking for something different reads just one review on their mobile device. Have a Happy New Year! Me: Allow me to elaborate: True, i do hate coffee houses. However, as your menu appeared to have quite the selection of breakfast goodies, which i believe i mentioned in my review, I took a chance. I believe that's what you are referring to when you say "have an open mind." Unfortunately, the service i received and the quality of the food led me to believe that your establishment did not value my business. I'm glad your business is doing well enough to see 4,000 regulars a month, but you know what would be nice? The ability to see 4,001 and afford that last customer the same attention you afforded the previous 4,000. I can appreciate the barista/server having to make a cup of coffee, however, as i was the only one ordering at the time, and it took me less than a minute to place said order, i would appreciate a modicum of patience until my order was complete. When referring to the daily hygiene regiment- you should know i was making a gross and sweeping generalization of "hipsters". It was a joke, Perhaps in poor taste. You should also know that that comment would have been in there even if i had received stellar service and quality food- which i did not. Thank you for noticing my Yelp Status! I really work hard to slam business that don't deserve it because somehow that helps me sleep better at night! If you notice my Yelp break down, most of the business i review get a solid, if not a great review. The fact of the matter is your business, in my opinion, offered me terrible service to receive an inferior product that i paid way too much for. What's sad, Fitz, is if you had contacted me and said "I'm sorry you had a terrible experience, come back and try us again. I guarantee you'll be pleased" or even if you had not contacted me at all, i would have went back and given your establishment another chance. Instead, I'll happily take your advice on the Jura, and not returning. Thanks for the tip!

I'm in love with the cobb salad!! (Who knew olives and peanuts went together so well?! Not me.) I'm actually writing this because I'm craving it right now and am about to call in an order. I've spent a LOT of time up here studying as well as tutoring. I usually only get drinks which are always well prepared by the barista but I have eaten a couple of sandwiches and the cobb. The only two sandwiches I've had are the Ghandi and the Tommy Chong last summer when I was trying to not eat meat :-/ and both were delicious as far as I can remember but the cobb, ohhhhhh, the cobb it is soooo good!!!!

First time here and just grabbed a soy cappuccino to go. I was impressed that they gave me the choice between vanilla or plain soy. The coffee was the best I've had in a while. Good stuff, I will be back!

It's...ok I'm never particularly impressed. The coffee is ok, the food is ok but nothing great. I had their smoked salmon sandwich thinking it would be a lox sandwich. It was literal smoked salmon. It wasn't terrible but not what I wanted. If friends want to meet there I'll go, but the prices are high for the quality and I don't feel the need to go there.

This place has a yummy breakfast and lunch sandwich menu in addition to good coffee. You have to love it -- they serve hummus, but they also serve grits. Nice. I enjoyed the Round Salad (not wilted, very good dressing, just enough bite) and a cup of the Sumatra coffee. It's neat that it's roasted in-house. It's a pretty typical interior -- nice, relaxed, perfect hideaway.

The coffee here's good and the breakfast is simple. But what I really liked was the atmosphere and how community driven they are. They had a donation fund to save a local skate park, a place where you could recycle your jeans, and cool local artwork everywhere. Really friendly, laidback, & authentic. Definitetly better that going to Starbucks because you're on autopilot.

This place is awesome! Great coffee with a large menu and wonderful food. If you are a vegetarian check this place out as they have some great veg options. I visited Memphis with my fiancee and we ended up here after checking out some other shops which were also good, but this one took the prize! Very friendly server and nice atmosphere!

Went there for the first time with 6 others, and found the food and service to be not so good to great. The latte's were tasty, but luke warm. The Ahab with salmon was a very good untraditional rendering of bagel and loxs with hunks of smoked salmon and a thin layer of cream cheese. The hash browns were the best we've ever eaten. Ever. The ice teas was machine made and lousy. Whereas the wait staff was very friendly, it took quite a while to get the food and forever to get the check even after asking.

UPDATE #2 (July, 2010): Have returned many times. Food is quite consistent. I often have a simple meal: Belgian waffle and bacon. Sweet and salty and savory. Always consistent and delicious. Smoothies are good. Coffee, the standard, is very good and most of the servers are great at keeping you from seeing your cup's bottom. Lots of power outlets, internet has been erratic perhaps on 1 out of 10 visits (but staff always friendly and willing to seek a solution). I love this place now. --older review-- UPDATE: Since my first review (a couple of months ago) I've revisited several times and service has been more consistent. I hereby upgrade my rating. The food is quite good (though a bit expensive). Try out the Armstrong, or simply a waffle and a side of bacon. The coffee is great. And it's a wonderful place to work. --old review-- The food and coffee are very good, but the service is so erratic it can get frustrating. On several occasions I've been overlooked upon arrival for 10 or more minutes (having folks wander in after me and get service immediately). It's as if the staff don't pay attention to who is coming and going. Other times I just give up and get a coffee at the front. I wish the place would just choose between being a consistent sit-down or a consistent get-it-yourself joint. It gets tiring to have to repeatedly try to wave down servers when they rarely look in your direction. I do enjoy doing work there though, and I will return. But I would give the place a higher rating if service weren't so annoyingly unpredictable...

When my wireless went out for a bit, I headed over to Republic Coffee to plug in for a bit! It's got a great vibe and I'm an early bird so anyplace that I can be at eating b-fast at 8am on a Sunday is great with me! The bagel covered in butter and honey in the Vegas is divine! Unfortunately, I'm not a coffee drinker but their tea selection is good served via a tea infuser. I like a coffee shop that has paperbacks in the shelves and trivia pursuit available to patrons. Overall, a good time and good service!

Small, eclectic menu. Service was a little slow initially - but timely once we'd placed our order. We had the Armstrong and the Pedro. Strong smoky flavor on the Pedro - recommended only for those who like their food spicy! Armstrong was also a little smoky (smoked mushrooms?) and had tons of egg whites. Cheese grits were great and hummus (made from scratch) was awesome. The coffee of the day was stellar. Nice to see a robust, great tasting coffee being carried around the dining room for refills! Will definitely eat here often. Great atmosphere - laid back vibe. Maybe that's why some people don't like the service - but we didn't mind.

Coffee house is exactly right. This is a place to sit and stay for awhile. Spacious and warm, with flat out great coffee. They also serve a lite lunch and as such it's one of my new favorite places to grab a bite. Missed in the news of the Starbucks closings is that some local coffee houses are beating them out.
