My boyfriend and I thought it would be a good idea to eat here before a hockey game and to our surprise it was not a good choice at all. We arrived right at 5pm on a Saturday evening for dinner and were seated in a nice comfortable booth. The waiter brought us a typical plate for olive oil and poured about half oil and half balsamic vinegar, which was more of a salad dressing then a nice bread topping. About five to ten minutes later he brings us bread similar to outback steakhouse style but plain white instead of pumpernickel. He ordered a beer and I ordered a glass of wine. Appetizer of choice was going to be their risotto fritters which they were out of, even though they just opened. So we each ordered salads, arriving to our table three loaves of bread later. Nothing exciting worth mentioning there, he had a house salad and I had caprese salad. When the entrees arrived they looked rather appetizing. I had ordered the scallops, each presented on an individual sea shell covered with crumbled bacon, cheese and green onions. However after I tried to eat one I began to feel like something was wrong. They were moderately warm and tasted like boiled wet sponges. Not the expected hot pan seared with brown crispy goodness on each side which is how they should be cooked. It appeared that they just tried to cover that up with all the crap on top. Of the 6 served I could only force myself to eat 2 and a half. Then came the accompanying side of what they called risotto. After one bite I had to drink almost my whole glass of water. It was exactly what my boyfriend described at sludge, and salty sludge at that. It was nothing like risotto should look or taste like. I wanted to tell them they should say they are out of that too so they do not give anyone else a disgusting salt overdose. It coated your mouth like paste. Moving on to his entrée which was prime rib and mashed potatoes, thinking how could they screw this up because it's a chop house. Prime rib was ok but more than half of it was inedible because it was fat or gristle that should have been trimmed properly off the meat before serving. It came with a side of au-jus that was basically warm brown water, why did they bother to serve it. Do the people in the kitchen even taste this crap before they serve it to their guests? The garlic mashed potatoes were enough to serve a family of four easily and had enough garlic to knock anyone out. By this point we both were more than ready to leave and never come back. The served had the audacity to ask if we wanted to-go boxes after seeing that most of our food was left uneaten, of course we refused. After spending more than $100 on this pathetic of a dining experience I will make sure no one else wastes their money on this.

Took several people for a business dinner. Average to good. Prices were a bit out of line with the service and food quality. Recommend the signature deviled eggs and the strawberry cake.

OK lunch experience. Waitress was friendly but service could have been a little bit better. My French Dip was really cooked well, nice flavor to au ju sauce. I would go back for dinner to get a better feel of the food and service.

We left The Butcher House to eat here and thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and the atmosphere. Very nice and great steak!!! Filet and mushrooms were delicious. Atmosphere up to par as well. Would recommend dining here for a delicious dinner with an elegant steakhouse atmosphere.

Good steaks and cool atmosphere but service is lacking. Went twice a few years ago and would be 4 stars but service has declines and prices have increased.

I recently went here while on vacation. I knew nothing of the area and was just looking for some good food before a night on the town. Upon arrival we were seated at the chef's table (next to the open kitchen). We were introduced to all of the kitchen and bar staff. To start they brought us complimentary bacon wrapped shrimp that were AMAZING. We also ordered the deviled eggs which were great. For our meals i had the petite fillets with crab and my partner had the duck. Both were very good and large portions. As a side we ordered creamed spinach which was AMAZING. For dessert we had a piece of the strawberry cake which was one of the best cakes I've ever had. I'm"m currently figuring out how to have one shipped to NJ for my birthday :) The server was a little awkward and seemed scared but she may have been new. Otherwise the staff was great, food amazing and it was a wonderful dining experience. We left stuffed and for what I thought (especially being from NJ) was a reasonable price. Will definitely go back if I ever end up in Memphis again.

Great atmosphere. Great food. Great service. What more could we have asked for to contribute to our great time? Nada! Drew, our server, was armed to the hilt with answers to our questions, knowledge of the menu, and just the right amount of jocularity. He did a killer job!

Caitlin was our server and was fantastic. The food was great. Right from the fresh baked bread on, things just kept getting better. We had the Maytag filet and the new york strip. They were perfectly cooked and delicious. The asparagus, green bean and salads were executed with care and also delicious.

First, the waiter did a great job. He tried really hard and was knowledgable. But the food is something you would find in the hospital cafeteria. Meatloaf and brisket are the dinners we had. The brisket was one big fat chuck of fat. NO KIDDING. Gross. Why would the chef pre-cut your meat selection? Well, he pre-cut the brisket like my wife was a child and couldn't cut it herself. We ordered carrot cake for dessert and it wasn't fresh. Made probably two days prior, unless it was way overcooked and sat uncovered, then it was made the day before. And finally, we ordered two decafs with our dessert and there were no spoons to be had, so we stirred with our forks. No alcohol and our bill was $81 with tip. Rip off. We're not going back. Memphis sucks.

The quality of this place has steadily plummeted within the past year. I used to be a regular at this place and would be at the same seat at the bar twice a week for a steak and an old-fashioned for dinner. Used to be unbeatable food and drinks. The owners evidently forced the manager to make some changes and staff members began to gradually disappear. Most of my friends stopped coming when they discontinued the burger - I stayed a regular for the steaks and the awesome bar staff. Apparently, the owners felt more changes were necessary, and the menu went from refined to mediocre. Some dishes stayed the same but with dumbed-down names. The manager had to dismiss the chef for some reason and the quality of the food went to a death spiral. Then the owners replaced the manager with some creepy and extremely rude, inept cronie. The food? Golden Corral leftovers would have been better. I went back recently and was BEYOND disappointed. All of the staff I had known from my time as a regular was all gone. The kitchen area was crowded with what appeared to be the worst recreation of the three stooges - the food orders coming out looked like overcooked roadkill. The bar staff was extremely in dire need of training and is probably better suited taking orders from a drive-thru window. I ordered one old-fashioned, and the poor girl had to go look up the recipe in a recipe book. It took her 7minutes to make it, and was the worst thing I have tasted - turpentine would have tasted better. She was severely lacking in costumer service skills at best. I did not even dare order food. I paid for my drink and left after wasting time with poor service. It has come a very long way...down. One can only help but wonder: owners, do you just want to run your business into the ground? There are far more better options for dining in the area to settle for this poor, poor place. I miss the mesquite from a year+ ago. Get rid of the weirdos working there now, make peace with the old staff and chef, reintroduce the old menu, and explore some marketing ideas to get your brand some exposure...then you will get my hard-earned money. Until then, enjoy watching it go to your competitors

I don't understand all the hype for this place.. It's extremmmmmmmely expensive and the food is mediocre. Not a fan.

Good wedge salad. Nice atmosphere. Not very busy. Called ahead and they had two place settings ready at the bar so we could watch the finals playoff game. They have a Sunday night steak special that was very good. 4 or 5 types of steak to choose from and a side for $13. I had the parmesan encrusted flat iron steak and sauteed mushrooms and enjoyed both. Over all it was a good Sunday night dinner and will probably take some friends next week and see what they think. Would probably be a 3.5 rating if possible.

We had a business dinner there and when we finally received our food the meat was lukewarm at best and dry. They had no clue what medium means, since there was no pink in my steak! One of our party ordered the fish of the day getting something charred and dry, which was a good 8 to 10 minutes after the rest of us were served. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone, not even someone I didn't like!

Don't waste your time or money. The restaurant is very attractive, but the good qualities just about end there. Although we were in no rush, and told the waitress that, waiters arrived with appetizers and salads in hand at the same time. The crab cake was good, but the "spicy" remoulade sauce needed some spice. The bacon wrapped scallops were awful. Our strip sirloin was terrible, although cooked perfectly to medium rare. It was practically tasteless. Golden Corral does a much better job. The duck breast was good, cooked as ordered, and very tender. However, the sauce, described in the menu as a "honey/balsamic reduction", was clearly bottled barbecue sauce - and not a good variety. The bread was cold and hard. On the positive side, the wedge iceberg lettuce salad was fresh and good, but that involved the kitchen no further than slicing open a head of lettuce. Oh, I almost forgot. The "creamed spinach" was sauteed spinach drowned in a sea of what tasted like bottled Ranch dressing mixed with a little Parmesan cheese. Our waitress was very pleasant and somewhat attentive, although we did have to ask for our water to be refilled. One final thought: Although duck breast was available as an entree, the bacon wrapped duck breast appetizer was not. This leads me to believe that the management is buying pre-prepared foods from a vendor, rather than assembling dishes in the kitchen.

This place Sucks ! Actually the food was not bad, although it took 3 tries to get my steak cooked right. Also who runs out of vodka ? Seriously on a Saturday night ? Do yourself a favor and do not spend your money here. Pony tailed male server is a total dickhead. I travel for a living and I will not be back here. Fair warning ! Try this at your own risk !

We stumbled upon this place last year and had one of the better meals we've ever had. We went back this year and they did not disappoint. The food is upscale but the prices are reasonable. They don't appear to do a lot of business... that is perplexing. Do yourself a favor and check them out.

The staff is really the only reason I give this place 4 stars. They go above and beyond, in my opinion. Even with a party of 20+, they split our bills and made an effort to make this easy on us. However, the food is lackluster. I got a sausage and cheese platter...great cheese selections, but seriously where is the sausage??? I got a parmesan encrusted steak, and it was actually LESS impressive/tasty than one I would have made at my house. Seriously underwhelming. If you want steak in downtown Memphis, go to Double J's. Much better food, and a more entertaining staff to boot.

I am traveling for work and happened to find this place walking. Was not on my radar initially based on the reviews. Is it perfect? No. No restaurant is. It happened to be Tuesday and they have the 2 for 1 8oz. Filet. I sat at the bar. Service could have been better but I would come back every time when I am here every 6 months for work. I will check back in July.

I've been going to mesquite ever since I moved downtown. The food has usually been great and the service excellent. There is one item missing from the menu though that was there when I first started coming, and that's their burger. The burger was hands down the best thing on the menu. In all honesty me and my friends stopped coming as often because the burger was removed. i am giving them a one star review due to what happened last night. I went to mesquite last night and the new manager there was very rude not only to me and my friends but also to the staff. After my experience last night I will not be going to a once favorite spot.

We decided to have dinner here tonight just to try something new even though the reviews weren't great. We had bacon wrapped shrimp, bacon deviled eggs and wedge salads to start, and all of those were great. Everyone in my party had steak for main course except me. I had the pork chop which was one of their specials for the night and it was great, juicy and flavorful, also nice to have a pork chop that didn't have a sweet glaze. According to the others the steaks were a little lackluster. We had mashed potatoes, macaroni, and creamed corn for sides and those were all tasty. Service was great too. Only negatives were that they were out of chicken(?!) and grey goose which is our vodka of choice. Overall good experience.

As a basis for this review, this is my first (and so far, only) time going. The restaurant looks like any other I would expect from a downtown restaurant; has character and represents the type of establishment you'd expect to pay for a downtown, city meal. Food? Well, I'm conflicted. The 'bacon wrapped duck' appetizer was rather tasty. I did enjoy it. Wasn't over done, nor over seasoned. For dinner, I ordered the Ribeye, which I love. I'm always torn between Ribeye, Prime Rib Roast, or Filet... Toinight I chose the rib steak. it was good. I want to like this place, because I'm new here and want to find an amazing steak place. Not to say it's bad, because IT'S NOT!. It's just not amazing. Value.. that's the crux of the review. How does it fare? In regard to output dollars relative to return on investment. Tricky to answer. I've had better cheaper, and I've had worse more expense. Mesquite falls in-between; good, expensive. This is a portion of the review that's difficult to address. What I will offer, is that I spent closer to $100 than I did $50 on a main course, appetizer, and drinks, and I left underwhelmed but not disappointed. Service. I believe that is where this location requires critical improvements. The staff is very attentive to their clients/patrons, but only if you get their attention. On a first impression, it seems the staff only acknowledging your presence when they catch you bored and looking around for service. My friend and I experienced an incredible absence of our server (who also doubled as the bartender that evening) throughout the evening. We were seated at a table, not seemingly attached to, nor in the section of the bar. Why couldn't we be transferred to a server? My impression... Would I return? Not likely unless it's a consensus. But is the menu priced accordingly?... Food is good. Value? I'm not going to get too involved with price because it's so subjective. Entrées are posted. If it's in your budget, try it out. I certainly will.

Decadent deviled eggs and duck breast appetizers were delicious. Ribeye steak was perfectly prepared, tender and juicy. Will order without sauce next time. Not needed

It is rare that I am overwhelmed by a restaurant. For this restaurant, I'm not worried. I was underwhelmed. The food was served to us cold, and tasted plainly. I ordered the veal loin with succotash as my side. Both items were fairly Luke warm when I received them. The veal had a nice taste, but was tough due to the coldness of the Meat. The Succotash had too much cream. I would not recommend this restaurant.

We had a great time at the Chophouse. We went on Sunday to try their $13 steak deal. I had the parmesan steak and garlic mashed potatoes... they were both great. The restrauant is very nice so I would suggest being a little dressy. The staff and cooks were very nice; we sat at the bar and talked to them for quite a while. So if you are looking for a nicer place to go out for dinner I would definitely give them a try.

I went here for a business dinner and thought this was one of the best steaks I've had in a long time. Therefore it was worth every penny, and much better than the Folk's Folly experience I was about to have later... I'll go back at one point when I'm in the area...

THIS IS A STEAKHOUSE, RIGHT?! That was the only thought I had in my mind when i entered this place. I was excited, I love steak. A steak, a salad, some form of potato, and a bottle of wine (or a couple glasses of bourbon) is one of my favorite meals. The ambiance is elegant and refined, making it a great place to take a date. My date and I had just come from an intimate "concert" at the Center for Southern Folklore (you should either check out my review of the place, my review of the event, or just go check it out for yourself. The center is amazing, and puts on some pretty exciting events to boot), and i was eager to ensure that she was a carnivore (i WILL NOT date a vegetarian). The waitress was polite, and attentive, and I was blown away by the rapid appearance of our food. I ordered the bacon-wrapped filets with bechemel (?) potatoes and broccoli, my date had the petite filets. I order them mid-rare, and there in lies the problem. My steak was too undercooked to be considered rare. Rare is a cool, red center. My steaks had a slight sear on the outside, and were literally raw on the inside. I would expect this from, say, Outback, but not from a "quality" steakhouse. I would expect a steakhouse to know how to prepare a steak. Save yourself the time, money, and effort, go to Ruth Chris.

One of the worst meals that I have had in a long time. The consensus around the table was that the steaks were terrible and the seafood was still cold in the center (frozen). The service was friendly and management was accommodating, but ultimately I am there for the food... And they couldn't deliver.

To be honest I am a little baffled by this place. Things did not start out well; it took awhile to be seated at the bar, then I didn't have any silverware when my appetizer came etc. etc. Then there was the appetizer itself. Tomato mozzarella salad should be pretty hard to mess up, but this one was definately one of the worst I've had. It was way overdressed (swimming in olive oil) and cheese itself didn't seem that fresh and kind of plastic-y around the edges. Oh and it wasn't cold. So why 3 stars you ask? Because the 8oz filet I had for my entree was fabulous. Cooked perfectly (rare!) and very juicy and tender. Came out sizzling hot. Overall I don't know if I'd go back, there are too many other places in Memphis to try first, and for the price ($61 with tip; also had a drink in addition to the app/entree) you can probably do better.

Mesquite Chop House Downtown is the sister restaurant of the Mesquite Chop House in Southaven, MS. When you walk into the Downtown location you find a dimly lit room with a long bar on the left and large, deep booths on the right. Wood dominates the space, in the old steak house tradition. We were warmly anticipating the aroma of burning mesquite to pervade the restaurant. The air was clear of burning smells, a bit disappointing but probably better for our clothes and bodies. Comfortably seated in a booth, we tried a Chophouse Salad ($8) which included mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, candied walnuts and sprinklings of goat cheese and toasted sunflower seeds. They were all tossed in an exciting sounding charred tomato vinaigrette, which turned out to be undistinguished. The Classic Caesar Salad ($7) was a typical romaine lettuce, crouton, Parmesan combination in a less than zesty dressing. I happen to like anchovies and wished that they were at least offered as an option. 20 oz Bone-In Ribeye ($43) came medium rare as requested and was served with a baked potato. The ribeye was just OK. No special flavors coming from mesquite, no caramelization or crust on the outside, and they served a regular piece of grocery store meat (not aged meat). The waitress told us this was their best steak, so we had high expectations. Also, they brought out a tray with the usual steakhouse additions for a baked potato: grated cheddar, sour cream, bacon bits, scallions, etc. What a surprise when they added $2.00 to the bill for what is normally considered standard baked potato condiments (Our waitress did ask in advance if we wanted them, but failed to mention that there would be a charge if we said "yes"). Parmesan Encrusted Cast Iron Steak ($21) was rubbed with Dijon mustard and garlic, which added some flavor. The cut of steak was top shoulder, generally less expensive than the more familiar steak house cuts. This meat was very tender, however, if not as flavorful on its own without the additional ingredients. We shared a bottle of La Crema Pinot Noir ($46; about $20 retail), which was too warm and had to be chilled down in a bucket of ice water. Service was attentive but our waitress seemed a bit uncomfortable. Perhaps she was a new employee, although she seemed to know the menu pretty well and could answer any questions that we posed. One thing to note: We were there on a Friday night around 8:00PM and there were two couples in the restaurant besides us. That's it. Two couples and us; and no one else came in while we were there. We found the Mesquite Chop House lacking. The food was not up to "better" steak house standards and the wine list was uninspired. It seemed to be put together by a large wine distributor pushing his supermarket wines on the same page as his pricey bottles of Opus One and Caymus Special Selection.

when you go to a "chop house", you should not get your entree before your third bite of salad!...but when the head waiter says "should I put this under a heat lamp", you know your are paying too much for the food. Food was okay, bartender was friendly.

Finally saved an appetite for a steak dinner, and Mesquite filled the spot nicely. I ordered my steak with bleu cheese and sauce. The add-ons were good, but I ended up scraping off some of the cheese. The steak was SO GOOD and SO tender, I felt it a pity to cover it with much of anything. Great cozy atmosphere, excellent waitstaff, good selection of draft beer.
