Best authentic Vietnamese restaurant in Memphis .Reasonable price and great service . When asked the chef , Pho bone broth is meticulously and slowly cooked for 72 hours in order for customers to enjoy the real taste of a typical Vietnamese Pho . Excellent food , amazing service , friendly chef(server) . Couldnt ask for more . HIGHLY RECOMMENDED , you will never regret !

Definitely the best Vietnamese food in Memphis. Typical hole in the wall joint that packs a punch. This restaurant helps proove that the best eats in the city are on Summer Ave. Get a reservation and order ahead of time if you can as all dishes are made from scratch that day!

As most of my fellow Yelpers know I'm back and forth between Jackson, MS, the Gulf Coast and Memphis - year round due to family and work. So I'm always looking to try different eateries every time I come up. I wanted some Vietnamese and wanted to try a different restaurant from Pho Saigon. So I gave Lotus a try. Let me say this - it was storming mighty bad that night and my hunger pains were really kicking in - so I needed this place to deliver that WOW taste to my palatte. With saying all that, I found Lotus and I'm not big on aesthetics, but the aesthetics will really drive down my reviews when the food doesn't deliver. So in other words, if yuo look like a grease pit - you better have some damn good food! It's just that simple! I ordered their version of pho and it was very very very very very very bland, with large chunks of broccoli and cut up onion and tofu - it was very disappointing. The food just didn't have any love put into it and to top it off the weather was just down right terrible that evening so it was a shot in the dark and will probably be the last time ever going there too. If you like it - I'm glad for you - but I can honestly say the food wasn't very good. The people that served me were very nice and accomodating - but the food didn't cut it.

We went here based on other reviews. Upon stopping, we almost left without going inside because outside it was a total hole in the wall. The owner is in fact very friendly and chatty, and they do take their time. We had 2 hours until my boyfriend had to work, were the first people there, and he just made it to work on time! But the food was good. I know my Vietnamese. I've eaten it in Boston, Vermont, Florida, Toronto and Montreal Canada, California, New Orleans, New York, and I'm sure some other places I can't think of right now. I generally seek the cuisine out when ever I travel as I love the fresh veggies and spices and the simplicity of the food. My tummy always feels good after a Vietnamese meal. Anyway, We ordered the Fresh Rolls, which were very good and fresh, and he brought us some sort of Pork steamed dumpling which was also quite good (he decided we needed that instead of the regular egg roll! My BF was disappointed as he loves Egg Rolls!). For the main dish I had Curry Tofu and Veggies, and he had Lemongrass Chicken. the dishes came with steamed Jasmine rice which was so soft and tender as to be almost sticky rice (yum!). Both dishes were perfectly seasoned and very tasty. Oh and huge portions. HUGE. This is not the best Vietnamese I have ever eaten. Mr. Le's in Allston, MA still takes the prize. But this IS authentic Vietnamese which is hard to find and very, very tasty. This place is worth going to, even though it looks shady!! It would rank up there as a good #2 for Vietnamese cuisine in the country- at least of the 2 dozen or so places I've tried thus far!

Lotus is a treat, especially if you are unfamiliar with Vietnamese food. The owner is a very nice fellow who will go over the menu with you very patiently. My wife and I appreciated this, as we were unfamiliar with Vietnamese food. It should be noted that Lotus also says they serve some Chinese food on their menu. Their soup is great, and like others have said, the broth is prepared well in advance. I believe our food took about 45 minutes to arrive, starting with the soup, but it was worth it. The restaraunt is not expensive, and I think if you're looking for a fun date night with the chance to talk, this is a great place. We went on a Tuesday night and only 4-5 people (not groups) walked through the dining area. **HINT** They seem to have a good takeout business. We saw several people grabbing takeout, coming in and going out. **OTHER HINT** This is a low carb option! They serve rice separately from their entrees, so you can simply not eat the rice!

Have been eating here for many years, over 20, and have never been dissappointed.30 minute drive from my house but well worth the trip. Best Wonton Soup period. The appetizer Bahn Quon, may be spelled wrong, is absolutely amazing, but not always available unless requested ahead of time. Have tried the call 24 hours in advance fish, amazing. Takes 24 hours to prepare the sauce. Will be trying other call in advance dishes. Ok, the wait time means bring a friends and relax and enjoy yourself. This is the only restaurant I have ever gone to where I believe you could just go and say cook me a surprise and you would be greatly rewarded.

If you like pho, you'll like this place. Personally, I don't do noodle dishes as much anymore, and I tried the lemongrass beef. Forget the fact that it looks a little iffy from the outside (the restaurant, I mean), the food is very good. It's a good place to go when you have the time to kick back, relax, and wait. Yes, the service can be a little slow, but it's worth it, in my opinion. I love authentic recipes and I feel like this is that.

Seriously? I don't get the reviews. This is not a Vietnamese restaurant people. This place serves Westernized Chinese food. And it's not that great either. It's slop. Memphis has Pho Vietnam, Pho Binh, Saigon Le to choose from and this place gets 4 and 5 stars? Even the name isn't Vietnamese - Lotus - it's Chinese, hint, hint ... Look if you think Olive Garden is good Italian or PF Chang is authentic Chinese, then feel free to eat at this place and enjoy it. If you want real, authentic Vietnamese, go to the other three.

After driving by this place at least twice a day for as long as I can remember, I finally got the nerve to try it. It was about 8:20pm and I was in the mood for pho, but my go to place closes at 9. After a quick search on yelp, I found Lotus, which closes at 10:30. It was on! This place is nothing to look at on the outside (hell, it kept me away for 12 years at least), but once you walk in, you know its going to be good. When we were there, the old man was the only person in the main area. He was very nice, and took the time to explain the menu, tell us what was popular and what not. I got the pho, and it was THE BEST pho i've had locally. The broth is super flavorful, and the bowl is jam packed with delicious stuff. i'll be coming back for sure.

Very long wait time, but definitely worth it. One bowl of pho and one bowl of the roasted pork wonton soup was ordered at our table. It took about 45 minutes to an hour for it to get to our table. The size of the bowl seems small, but it is extremely filling. The chef told us he cooks the pho broth for 72 hours for maximum taste. I would recommend eating here; however, be patient as the wait for your food is likely to be a very long one (busy or not).

I haven't been here in years. Last time I was here I was merely a child. I remember my parents not liking this place due to the portion size and price. So the other day after I drove around looking for tacos (UYE planning), I stopped by here. The parking is confusing. And the entrance is on the side. So I pretended like I've never been here, well, I didn't remember much anyway. The older gentleman (the owner) greeted me properly and sat me down. I was given this really really small menu. I remember it being a full menu before, but it seems like they cut it down to just what they do best. First time at a Vietnamese restaurant obviously the first items to try is the pho and the springrolls or eggrolls. On the menu there is only one Pho. That's actually quite refreshing to see just one choice for pho. And I gotten an order of springrolls instead of eggrolls because I've already sampled enough greasy tacos that afternoon! It didn't take much time for the owner to get me my items. There were two tables of 4 and another table of 2 in there with me. The springrolls arrived first; and it was as expected. And just one minute later, he delivered the Pho. He described to me how the stock has to be cooked for over 11 hours. And boy, was the stock good! There are no garnishes provided with this Pho. It's almost like they are saying, "We perfected it. Here it is. Eat up!" I would have to say that this Pho is very good, but the portion size is a bit smaller especially for the price. Is it the best in this town? No, but I don't even know who is #1 or #2 before this. If I had more, I might be able to judge! Overall, I would say that the owner is one cool dude. The Pho is delicious. The problem with this place really is that there are other Vietnamese places here that may or may not serve better food, but at least serve it at a better price. I definitely would like to come back again, because the owner is really friendly. It was a personal dining experience. How many other Vietnamese restaurants could you say that about in this town?!?

Ordered the Pho Dac Biet with top round, tendon, tripe, flank and meatballs. The broth was complexly delicious, rich and not over powered by anise . Very generous with the meats, and of course all the usual Pho accompaniments were included. Bean sprouts, lime, jalepeno, thai basil, onion, etc. The Pho is as good if not better than any I have had in the cities and would definitely return. The Chicken Wings were also delicious. the Can't wait to go back and try some other things.

We had a surprise date night without the kids and choose to eat at the restaurant vs take out. It was wonderful. The inside was clean and the staff was very nice. The food takes a while to prepare because its all fresh. But the wait was well worth it. We had the Wonton & Hot and Sour Soup with the Teriyaki Steak with chicken fried rice. Best date night in a long time.

Don't be scared when you pull up, because this place is amazing! Granted, you are going to wait for AWHILE for your food but it is worth it... Take a book! Joe and his wife have run this place for over 30 years. Joe is the wait staff and his wife is the chef.. Hence the long wait time. They use all fresh ingredients, including fresh herbs that Joe grows! The stock is actual stock, very very rare! If you are lucky enough to get to know Joe then you definitely won't be disappointed. He's a man that still has a sense of humor despite his sad past. He didn't get to see his family ever again after leaving Vietnam when he was 10. He sometimes tells stories about how he wishes everyday that he could try the food (or at least remember how to make) the food his father used to make for him. So go here and support this local diamond in the rough!

The wait is EXORBITANT! The curry dish was too sweet, but their home made "Sriracha" is really really good!! I want to go back once before they close eventually and try the Pho'

This place is really just not that good. There are much better Vietnamese restaurants in Memphis. We ordered three dishes, the lemongrass, curry, and just regular and they all tasted pretty similar with differing spices. The portions are generous but the taste of the food doesn't signal Vietnamese - it tasted more like Chinese food with extra spices. One of the reasons I think so many speak so highly of this place is the dearth of quality Vietnamese restaurants in Memphis.

This place is a bit of a dive -- picture that you had sweet, but clutter-messy old Vietnamese neighbors who liked hosting people for dinner. Step it up slightly from house to small restaurant room and you are getting the idea. (Note, they have a tapestry of dogs playing poker on one wall, need I say more?) As other reviews have noted service / food is slow -- seems like a family-run place that puts care into each dish and are busier than the small staff can handle in an efficient manner. Orders are probably cooked in order received (dining room and take away) so be patient. I recommend take-away and leaving your house around the the time they say the food will be ready. Even if you drive from Midtown it probably won't be waiting when you get there. Pho -- very flavorful broth. Other items also well-prepared. In my opinion is way better than both of the Pho spots on Poplar or the one on Madison.

We came into town for Family business and was craving some Pho...we ran out of the green bamboo from their fruit fly infestation. Showed up here and I had read reviews so I was preparred. It's a divey hole in the wall that is quite outdated. There was a 12 top in there so I was afraid we would wait forever and after talking to him about how we were short on time and let us know if we both ordered pho we could eat within 10 minutes. They brought out the pho and I have to say it was wonderful. The broth was super deep in flavors and a bit sweet. Overall great food. Nice service. Ambiance leaves a lot to be desired. Joe needs to clean up and remodel.

Great food. Soups are some of the best in town(Probably the best). I could give a large list of items to order but they really are all good. The thing to know is that it is a mom and pop place and will take a while to eat. Don't go here if you need to eat fast. They have beer but take some wine, a date, and make it a fun night with some great food!

I'm look at review and chose this place. I order pho and hu tieu to go back to hotel. I glad I didn't dine-in the place very small, the container hold soup so small and look cheap. Overall tastes ok, I Order very late, but he willing to take my Order. Thank you

Checked out Lotus tonight for the first time. It. Was. Delicious. We started with the Vietnamese egg rolls and the banh xeo. The egg rolls were good but the banh xeo was banging!! It's a crispy thin "crepe" as the owner called it with ground beef, shrimp and sprouts in it and then a flavorful oil is spooned on top. It's taco meets empanada meet Vietnam. Highly recommend! It's big though so definitely share. Next, we got the hot and sour soup. I've been told they cook the broth for 15 hours, so had to try. It was really tasty but different than any other hot and sour soup I've ever had. We finished with the Vietnamese Vermicelli. This dish is full of flavor and the portion is gigantic. We were already close to full when this arrived, but still ate a little and I think my husband and I could eat two more meals with the leftovers. The dish has pork, shrimp, sprouts, and scallions all mixed in with the vermicelli noodles and then a super savory curry based sauce. Next time, I am definitely trying to pho as the owner told us the broth cooks for 50 hours!! 50! Side note: the owner is the sweetest man, but he WILL talk to you for way too long, multiple times. He is super proud of his food and loves to tell you about it. I thought it was adorable but if you're trying to have a romantic/quiet dinner, this may not be the best choice for that.

The pho was really good. They only have beef, which I never get because it can be gamey, but this was deliciousness! I would ask them to bring the parsley they put in the pho on the side, cause they put too much and it was overpowering. The steamed dumplings were really good too. The summer roll needed basil which they forgot to add. Do not go if ur In a hurry or if u want nice decorations. It almost felt like it's where the mafia would conduct business if there was one here. Or you could be at your foreign grandparents old house. Old dude is adorable!

As the previous Elite yelper Torri had stated best, it is an experience from when you find the place to dining in it. The feeling of being welcomed home is probably how i would best phrase it. Being pleasantly greeted by Joe and your orders being taken by him and waiting for the home cooked meal by Mrs Bach. The key to a great meal is time and its preparation. Mrs. Bach has made it well known that her food comes within Time and Preparation, so if you are in need for a quick in a out, i would suggest you steer away. But if you do want that homecooked meal feeling, do get comfy, stir up a conversation and read some of the other Yelpers reviews and possibly some publishings that Lotus has made it into if available. You won't be disappointed. Feels like Vietnam. You don't have to travel half way around the world for authenticity. Its quite a Hidden gem in Memphis.

Had a great dinner here for the first time about a month ago !! Tried it out based on the reviews. Joe is a character and made small-talk with us as he served our food. The soup and rolls we had for an appetizer were great. Lemongrass chicken was really good also Overall great food & service. Will be going back

Lotus... lots of hype, bizarre/hilarious stories (read Torri M's encounter with the owner), and a-ok food. The place has plenty of 3 star qualities, and I really cannot get on board that it is mind-blowing Vietnamese as some others claim. Let's run it down: The good: - Service... the old guy (some people call him Joe?), is a great guy, and likes to chat with you despite the fact that he is so quiet and has the "Memphis Mumble" going on at a whole new level - Flavors... now, I did enjoy quite a few of the flavors here, and you could tell they had some authentic goodness going on... I like it, and it was fresh goodness at that - Soup... the soup is awesome... all of them... and as others claim, it may be the natural way to cure yourself of a cold... or hangover The not as good: - Ambiance/building... it's run down, and full of clutter... like you're at your grandpa's house and he serves Vietnamese food all of a sudden - Speed... this place, you gotta wait... just the way it works as it all appears to be by the order Look, I gave it four stars because I'm generous today. Memphis has a very good selection of Vietnamese food, and this fits right in there with the mix of the rest of them.

My friends got soup and fried rice which they liked. The Lo Mein might have been the worst thing I have ever tasted at a restaurant. I could not get the taste out of my mouth. Another person with us got the same thing and thought it was terrible too. Both of us ate massive amounts of gum to try and get the taste out. Bleeeeeh. I ripped my clothes off when I got home to get away from the gross aroma from the Lo Mein. I would have lit my coat and clothes on fire but I need them. I was really looking forward to trying this place. It had great character and decor though. Food- maybe they were having a super bad off day...

Food: 3 stars Service: 1 star I read the reviews that warned me of the long wait at this restaurant. So I walked in with a lot of patience and a great group of conversationalists. It didn't bother me that it took 10 minutes for the owner to come around with menus, another 15 minutes for him to bring our drinks, and yet another 15 minutes to take our order. However, when 60 minutes later, our food had not yet arrived - my patience was wearing thin (thankfully conversation was not). The look of disappointment on my friend's face when the food we thought was finally ours was delivered to another table was priceless. The food was good enough, but not great. I ordered a summer roll, egg drop soup, and veggie vermicelli with medium spice. The roll comes 1 roll per order at $1.75. It was fresh and fairly large roll - perhaps the highlight of my meal. The egg drop soup was good. I was a little underwhelmed with the vermicelli, though to be fair, it is not a meal I would normally order. I wanted to order something Vietnamese (not Chinese), but my Vietnamese staples (vegetarian Pho or Bahn mi) weren't on the menu. There was a Pho, but it was not vegetarian and also it was 95 degrees outside. No Bahn Mi sandwiches. After the 90 minute wait, we shoveled our medicore food in silence, and then waited another 20 minutes to pay our bill. Granted, we were a party of 5 - but the meal took over 2 hours. If you must eat at Lotus, be sure to go on an evening with nothing else planned and to go with someone with whom you can literally talk to for hours. Or, do as others have suggested - call in advance and order take out. Also, the inside is a wonder to behold - piles of newspaper in the corner, random asian art, and my favorite - the wall size embroidered picture of "dogs playing poker."

Yet another fascinating Memphis restaurant on Summer Avenue; housed in an old Dunkin Donuts franchise (not that you can tell unless you look closely) this inexpensive Vietnamese restaurant serves up spicy and satisfying Asian cuisine with a personal touch. The only knock: it sure tastes like Chinese food, although you might find some authentic Viet specialties if you look hard enough... PS Bring your own wine (they serve beer, though) and be sure to look at the quotes from Lotus fans on the inside flap of the menu.

Been here for the first time and it took me by surprise. When they say they make dishes from the scratch, they mean it. I ordered a pho soup and waited well over 30 minutes and it was worth every minute! I did notice when the owner(server?) suggested STRONGLY not to add any sauce into soup because they create their broth The Right Way. And he was right. Recommend to anyone who wants some authentic Vietnamese food in Memphis. If you or your kids don't have time or patience, stay away. If you want to taste what cook-to-order is like, then by all means go to this place.

This place is ridiculously under-frequented. I imagine many people keep driving at the site of Lotus. The exterior is not pretty and it is not in a quaint, trendy area. Walk in the door though, and you will be rewarded. You realize why hole in the wall restaurants endear themselves to people willing to step off the beaten path. The man running Lotus was kind and patient. He spent quite a bit of time talking to us about the food. The food was great, and the portions were outstanding. I will go back for the atmosphere, the kind old man, and of course the food.

Absolutely amazing Vietnamese food! One of the top 2 places for pho we have had around the USA. We have a friend from Vietnam that introduced us to the place if that tells you anything. Plus: Great value, made from scratch, excellent beer selection, can bring in your own wine and liquor. Minus: Food is made from scratch so it takes some time, depending on how busy they are it can take a bit of time to get your drinks and refills

The pho was good, but I've had better. The beef I had before at pho Saigon was Raw and the boiling hot soup added cooked it perfectly. The pho this time around was already cooked and mixed in the pasta and veggies that make up most of the flavor. Still I was glad to be able to pour the soup over myself. I like to mix srirasha (alot) in and warm the soup a little hotter before pouring the soup over the rest of the mixings. I also got hands down the best bahm xeo I have ever had. To answer a few of the other complaints about other people is some of there food does taste like Chinese partially because they also serve Americanized Chinese food. But their Vietnamese is the best I've ever had. And yes I had to wait for about 40 minutes. But for exquisite greatness there is going to be a wait.

Excellent Pho and other great menu items as well like the vietnamese spring rolls or pork wonton soup. The owner pulls double or triple duty as greeter, server, cook, etc. on most nights. Friendly service and reasonable prices. Don't let the suspect exterior fool you!

My brother loves this restaurant. He's taken me here since at least the mid 1990s. It's nice and cozy. I've never particularly been a big fan of Vietmanese food, but my brother is, and he definitely enjoys the food here.

I must sheepishly admit that I haven't been to Lotus in probably 15 years. Like so many other Midtowners, I have been lulled into the complacency of multiple Vietnamese restaurants just blocks. Lotus sets standards of excellent the others can't meet. The place looks exactly as it did the last time I was there. The food was just remarkably good. We started with the summer rolls which were loaded with fresh lettuce and shrimp. Entrees were Shrimp foo young for Katy and Lemongrass shrimp for me. I usually hate egg foo young, because it is usually heavy and greasy- the Lotus foo young is light and delicious. Words can't describe the explosion of flavors in the lemongrass dish. All the food was cooked to perfection, with very fresh ingredients. And yes the service is a little slow but DEFINITELY worth the wait. Lotus is only open for dinner. I am not sure I will be able to eat Asian food anywhere in Memphis but at Lotus in the future. Recommendation: The lemon grass dishes are superb!

This place is way over rated in my book. I would go with Saigon Le or Pho Saigon anyday over this place. The food is not bad, the problem is this guy doesn't seem to know how to run a restaurant. I went with my family last night and two hours later we were out of there. It took 1 1/2 hours to receive our order and there was only one other couple in the restaurant when we arrived. I told my wife, see we beat the rush, knowing this place was very slow the last time we dined at Lotus. After we arrived the crowd hit, although the place is very small as it is. Everyone was looking around smiling at each other wondering when when and if anyone would get their food. One man complained 2-3 times and finally told the owner he had 10 minutes to get the food out or he was walking. He had a group of people from out of town that he had brought to this restaurant. The dishes were heavy on the rice, very little meat. I had to walk up front to force the guy to get moving and ring up my order. With that he ran the credit card up and disapeared into the kitchen. At one point during the meal you could hear the owner arguing in the back with his staff. He badgered me about putting a tip on the credit card and kept asking if I was going to leave it on the table or put it on the card. The whole experience was comical, we're not going back. The only way I survived the ordeal was my bottle of wine. I decided to laugh rather than cry.

Best Vietnamese restaurant I've ever been to. The pho is my favorite thing on the menu, but I've never had anything bad there. The service is very slow because everything is made fresh. The owner and his wife are the only ones that work there, but I promise its worth the wait.

This is one of the best restaurants in Memphis that no one knows about. Everything on the menu is great! They have great stir-fry and various entrees to choose from. My personal favorites are the summer roll as appetizer, the lotus chicken, and the fried rice. The fried rice is the best I have ever tasted (and I have tried a lot) as it has a unique sauce mixed in. The portions are huge and could easily be shared with the table or taken home for several more meals. Pricing is very reasonable and you can even bring your own wine for a small corkage fee. Warning: CASH ONLY (the owner did not want to raise their prices so they decided to stop taking credit cards). The only caution is the wait time for food. The food is made fresh for you so it takes a bit longer. The owners personally run the restaurant and are very friendly. In case you don't have a GPS to tell you exactly where the building is, it is on the left if you are traveling east on Summer. They have a small red sign with white lettering. If you get to 240 you have gone too far.
