I was on the fence to give them two or 3 stars. I should start by saying we only tried the pastry side and did not have a deli item. There was a large selection of many great looking items in the counter, because of this being able to choose just one was impossible so we ordered several items to sample. A few items were fairly tasty, while others were a bit lackluster. We tried some cookies, a layered napoleon type pastry, and a few others. Nothing was bad or of questionable quality there was just no wow factor or any memorable item that I would just have to come back for. I would eat here again if was nearby or in a hurry but I wouldn't go out of my way to make a visit.

Great food! Love the bread and butter baskets. You can eat dem babies all by themselves! I always order the chicken salad because it's amazing every time. Their soups are great and flavorful and thick. My fave is the Wednesday soup of the day, cheese and broccoli. Also do not leave without trying their pastries! They have fruit tarts, the lemon one is amazing! Service is good too. Oh and probably one of the better sweet teas in Memphis. Yeah I said it.

Pastries were good, nothing too special. The pimento cheese was all mayo, no flavor. The rye bread was very dry. I would go back for pastries. Service for to go orders was very quick.

i was craving some french macarons so i googled it and found they had it here. so i called to make sure and a lady confirmed they usually have several flavors. (pistachio, vanilla, chocolate, lemon, strawberry and i forget what else) so i go to the store and they had none and the guy who was behind the counter had no idea what the heck i was talking about. so i was pretty bummed but ordered a few things anyway for my family and i to try. i ordered the custard with fruit on top, brownie, cookies, a lemon tart and something with coconut. they were good but on the expensive side. so few months pass and i'm still craving macaroons and decided to try again and call. lady confirms they DO have french macarons just depends on day if they have orders in. the french macarons they sell come all the way from italy so i had to call ahead to make sure they had it in. finally got me some and they were delish. satisfied my craving. BUT...they cost me $1.20 per cookie. =( which i guess is the normal price for french macarons so i can't complain too much.

I've been pretty underwhelmed with almost every trip I've made to La Baguette, except for when I had lunch. My lunch of tomato soup and sandwich (with a side of french bread) was great. But for some reason their pastries and desserts just aren't that great to me...? Like they're really dry or something? I don't know what it is, I've just never gotten something out of their bakery case and been like, OMG that is so good! Maybe I'll have to try the palmier and eclair like the other reviewers mentioned.

I just wanted to drop in and write a quick review regarding La Baguette. I had to grab a cake for a friend's birthday and La Baguette was truly the only place that was not out of my way. I got there right at 7pm, which is closing time, and they unlocked the door for me, suggested I get a larger cake for a better price (vs the smaller cake with ganache), and were just wonderfully helpful throughout. The cake was raved over, about as much as I raved over the super kind guys who helped me out! Thanks, you guys - *that* was customer service! And I, along with everyone who had a piece, *and* the birthday boy, certainly appreciated it!!

I love La Baguette!!!! They have the BEST chicken salad and pimento cheese around. And their soups? Foggetaboudit. These recipes must be kept under lock and key, too, because people are always writing into the Commercial Appeal's "Recipe Finder" wanting them. (I want them too, but I know it's hopeless) Aside from that, La Baguette also offers a wide variety of pastries, cakes, and breads. I personally favor the eclairs, napoleans, and lemon tarts. I have never had cake from there, but I've only heard good things about them. You can get day-old goodies for a discount, as well. La Baguette is located in the Chickasaw mall on Poplar. (Pssst - get the chicken salad on your first visit!)

Tis where I discovered the delight that is the palmier. Puff pastry and sugar heaven. And the baguettes are delicious.

I always come here for authentic french pastry. Definitely try their poppy seed Danish - so soft and fluffy on the inside. And if you are looking for a good cake for a friend or families birthday, I highly recommend their strawberry chantilly cake ^

I really wanted to give La Baguette a chance, since they have such pretty turned-out pastries and I'm not sure where else in Memphis to go for bread (besides the Whole Foods bakery). So after that fateful day when I walked in only to walk out empty-handed (see prior review), I went back, and I said to myself, "I'm going to find SOMETHING yummy here." I bought a chocolate croissant (ok), an almond croissant (a little sweet for my taste, but some people really jam on that), an eclair, a napoleon, and a loaf of bread. I saw lots of different loaf shapes (batard, baguette, half baguette, roll), so I asked the nice gentleman working if the different shapes meant any variation in bread flavor, and he said no, that they're all just different shapes. This makes about zero sense to me, but it's not really offensive, so, moving on. This bread is decent, but not great. It's lacking depth and complexity of flavor as well as the toothiness of crust that lets me know that I'm eating artisan bread. I'd probably buy bread from the Whole Foods bakery over this if given a choice. Now. The really offensive part of this visit comes with those beautifully turned-out pastries. The dough of the eclair was at once rubbery and dry, as if it had been FROZEN, then thawed and sold. It was pretty near inedible, and my husband, who is an eclair fiend, left half of it in the box for me to throw away. The napoleon was soggy and, like the eclair, covered in a chocolate goop that could only be called "icing" by the very, very kind. I guess you should go to La Baguette if you want a breakfast pastry or two, if you REALLY care what shape your bread is, and/or if you like eating once-frozen desserts.

I've been coming to La Baguette since I was a kid, but its mainly for the beautiful shopping center it's in which resembles a Parisian street complete with quaint store fronts. I've had a lot of pastries over the years, but the only one I ever recall tasting very good was the chocolate chip cookie, and that wasn't even anything special. The last time I went, I had an eclair, which was flavorless, and stale. The pastry filling had nasty bits that were kind of squishy instead of smooth, and the pastry itself was soggy and clearly had been there a while. The service is "meh." The people working here never look pleased about it and its mildly off putting. Although the sweets in the case look very appetizing, the taste just doesn't match up, and although I'll still bring my little brother and sister here for sentimental reasons, this place is a has been and could use a serious overhaul.

I always overlook this place because it happens to not be on my regular routes. Big mistake. I can't imagine how I forgot about these delicious pastries and amazing sandwiches. I am so happy this place has lasted all these years in Memphis. A lovely place to stop by for an anything-but ordinary lunch. Try the Pimento on Croissant and a mini fruit tart and give your diet a mini-break. You'll be glad you did.

La Baguette has some of the best chicken salad in the city...I always get it on baguette, but I'm sure a croissant would be fabulous, too.

This is my go to place for French bread. I will run through there in the morning for cinnamon rolls and/or crescent rolls and in the evening for French bread. I went to get a loaf of bread this evening at 6:45 and a lady waves us away stating that the place was closed. After I took a picture of the posted times she told me to come back (for some strange reason I had lost my appetite for French bread)? I will think long and hard before I return!!!!!!!!

Shortly before Mardi Gras, I called La Baguette to ask about ordering a king cake. The surly employee on the phone, who was carrying on another conversation at the same time, kept telling me to repeat myself and claimed she couldn't understand me. And yes, I was speaking standard English at a normal volume over a clear line. Then she hung up on me. I ordered my king cake online from Gambino's. It was tasty and didn't come with a side order of attitude.

The only thing French about La Baguette is the name. I stopped in one afteroon for a pain au chocolat (or an chocolate croissant as it's often called here). The pastry was over-cooked and had been sitting in the case all day and wasn't close to anything I would call fresh. Having been to France several times, this doesn't even come close and I was sorely disappointed. The staff, too, had a demeanor that they could care less that they had a customer and took their sweet time before even filling my order. I waited over 20 minutes for a stale croissant and a coffee. So if you're looking for something that's truly French and expect that sort of quality, don't go here.

A dispirited---and dispiriting--shop, with zero resemblance to a French bakery. There is neither craft nor care in the offerings, from the humblest bread to the supposed tarts and whatnot. One encounters shelves of glistening pastries and breads in familiar Gallic shapes, but there the resemblance to artisanship ends. I'm surprised there is a clientele of more than first-timers.

I smile just thinking about La Baguette. Jolynna is absolutely right- it is a favorite for ladies who lunch, and you'll find the tables spilling over with mothers, daughters, lifelong friends, book clubs, ladies' church groups, and more. I love their French Onion soup, and usually pair it with a flaky quiche de jour. Occasionally, I'll have the chicken salad croissant, which is equally as good. I do love the pastries, petit fours, tarts and tortes, and could feast on those alone if I didn't have such a guilty conscience.

Tomato Soup to start--delicious, not too spicy, and a gooey bit of cheese at the bottom. Yum. Entree: half a baguette with the chicken salad. Frankly, I've had better. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special. Just meh. Dessert: I though this would be the best part. I love a little something sweet at the end of a meal. Unfortunately, everything went down hill from the soup, this part of the meal being somewhat akin to the depths of hell. I got a chocolate crinkle cookie. From the other side of the case, it looked soft and rich and delicious. When I bit into it, chewing was sort of like breaking rocks into dust. Literally. This cookie was DISGUSTING. Maybe it was good two weeks ago when it was made, but by the time I got it, it was hard as a rock with no taste but the bitter tang of baking chocolate. I'm only going back once and that's to return the cookie. Yep. I'm returning a $1.25 cookie because it's that horrible. They shouldn't sell that garbage.

Once again la banquette does not fail to disappoint. Memphis use to be A great town with people who believe in excellence. Not la banquette,, it is like A sitcom from Tyler Perry Who can be ghetto. I walk in and am ignored By the lady behind the counter. She talked to the other employee, but totally Ignored customers. How do people keep their jobs with the I don't give A crap attitude. If you hate your job try looking for another one. Maybe Serving others is not something taught in la banquette job training. Don't go In early morning weekday hours.

La Baguette has been around for a long time in Memphis and is what I like to think of as the quintessential "ladies lunch" spot in town. Indeed, you won't find a lot of hungry men in this place. What you will find is fine French bread and pastries: baguettes, tarts, eclairs, croissants and various other treats and confections. The deli counter offers petit sandwiches, the best of which is the Chicken Salad, served on a soft croissant. The Egg and Olive is also good and comes on your choice of bread. The soups are delicious - especially the spicy tomato - and they offer a special of the day - the Soup de Jour. A couple of other things worth mentioning: They do special order cakes upon request and very nice boxed lunches.

Looks like Erica B. is gonna come on in and rain on La Baguette's little French Pastry parade. The gay-boyfriend and I stopped in here and got 2 coffees, a chocolate eclair and a strawberry tart. It was 9 dollars. WHAT?!?! You've got to be outta your mind right? 9 bucks for 2 crappy coffees (it tasted like Folgers and was weak beyond belief), a chocolate eclair that was half melted on top, frozen in the middle and the size of my index finger, and a strawberry tart that was smaller than my palm???? No. No no no no no. I could have made an exception for the price had these tiny treats made my taste buds line dance, but they didn't even do that. In fact, GBF made the "meh" face as soon as he tried both. (You know, the lip half curved up half downwardly slanted.) That's never good. I will be saving my pennies for Muddy's from now on, which is close enough to drive a bit further past your store front. Sorry!

I adore their chicken salad on a croissant with the toasted almond slices on top. The tomato soup is outstanding, too. Their customer service is spotty at best. I just called to find out if I could order a veggie quiche for a friend who just lost his grandmother, and the person I talked to was rude and abrupt. I had to call back because she hung up on me, and she snapped at me that all they offer is spinach. All I asked is do they offer veggie quiches! Late in the day they have decent, nice people working. I've had the servers ignore me for up to a half hour during prime lunchtime.

The best french pastry in Memphis! The baguettes and other breads have simply perfect texture and just the right crusty chewiness. The pastries are a delight. For a morning treat, try an almond croissant - heavenly. La Baguette is a poplar lunch place, but I seldom get past the bread and pastries.

A simple pleasure; crusty French bread, light pastries, sweet desserts, incredible tomato soup, dense chicken salad; consistent since I first came to Memphis too many years ago to recall; we do a lot of chocolate crossiant breakfasts; the counter staff know us by sight and start our order up; you can eat inside or out (depending on whether you can handle the weather); lunch can very crowded--in the sit down part or in the to go line, but they do a reasonable job considering the volume

I've got to help represent La Baguette. I don't know about the pastries so much (sweets are not my thing), but the sandwiches are, hands down, wonderful. I've had the tuna salad, pimento, & chicken salad...all on croissants, all delicious. The squash, tomato, & french onion soups are a delight when it gets colder (like now), and if you're dining in, it's fun to sit and just people watch. I've been eating here for over a decade now, and I've never had a complaint.

This place gets five starts for its adorable ambiance -- it's a great place to have lunch. You feel like you've stepped into a little piece of France in the indoor atrium-like seating area. The tables line the way, while you can look in nearby shop windows while you eat. Aside from smelling amazing, my friend had the croissant. He said it was good, and nice and buttery. I had the chicken salad -- plain, and it was very good. I'm a big fan of finding the perfect chicken salad and this just might be it.

A MUST STOP on my annual visits to Memphis for the pimento cheese. It will make you slap yo momma! Also, the faux outside dining ambience is a real kick - I love it!

I go for the danishes. This review is for the DANISHES only. Yes, LB has lunch offerings, but they are forgettable at best. The breakfast danishes are where they truly shine. The assortment varies daily. Just stop in and try something. I like the raisin danish and the cheese danish. If you take these to work, you will be adored and lauded for your fine taste. I speak from experience here folks. Also, they make a chocolate cake with raspberry filling (not a lot of filling, just enough) that is really a standout. Generally, I hate cake- but not this one. Danishes + Chocolate Raspberry Cake = Happiness. I cannot vouch for anything else here.

Yummy chicken salad with croissant but pasta salad not so good (so disappointed) Had macaroons and they were soft but not much flavor. I do have to agree with Erica that they are way over priced. $9.30 for a sandwich and small pasta salad... The sandwich by itself was 6.50, but it could be due to the location. IDE expect that at a resturant but not a small bakery. Meh

This was my go-to brunch spot for years. It's under $10, the sandwiches are solid, and it's never too crowded. The set-up here can be a bit confusing--there is one line for the bakery and one line for the cafe. I've never had a problem finding an open table, but there can be a bit of wait for the sandwiches (20-30 minutes). The bakery items are meh. Honestly, I could make better at home. I just liked this spot because it's a cheap, decent sandwich and provides a quiet place to chat.

  • CC D.

Evidently asking the young person at the register about side items was just more than she could handle. And the other girl making the sandwich found the word "almonds" nearly impossble to get out. It is difficult to speak clearly through clenched teeth. Other than the counter service who hated me upon sight, the chicken salad sandwich on croissant was great and worth going back for. Maybe the counter trolls will be in a better mood next time.

I have been coming here for years (as a little girl) and as much as I love it...it doesn't compensate for the extremely rude staffs they have. Most of these people look like they don't want to be here and it makes coming here a bit unfavorable in your liking. Esp those who work during lunch hours.

I live far too close to La Baguette. That said, I love it there. When my Mom is visiting (she's 84 years young) we go there about every other morning for coffee and a cream cheese pastry. But we have gone for that lite and classy lunch . All the sandwiches are available on a croissant -- so the chicken salad (with toasted almonds and tomato) is first rate. Also the pimiento cheese or any of the other options are just so good. It's worth a try. And, least I forget the Baguettes. I have to have one any time i'm making Italian or French food. Crusty, yeasty goodness to go. And by the way, the folks that work there are real sweeties. Go!

La Baguette provides fresh pastries and strong coffee, indulging my random desire to pretend I'm French. I only stop in for pastries but heard the lunch is definitely worth a trip and will stop in one day for a sandwich and update. In the mean time, I can recommend grabbing a chocolate croissant, an almond croissant, or any croissant. I promise you won't be disappointed!

Is it considered a biased review if I'm still eating one of their yummy pastries as I write this? Mmm. I just love this little spot. It's become my go-to brunch, whether I'm eating there or just picking something up. They don't have some fancy brunch menu with all the bells and whistles, but it's a quiet, cozy place devoid of all the midtown or downtown brunch hype. Their breakfast sandwiches on croissants are to die for--best croissants I've ever eaten. Their petit fours are creamy and adorable--a perfect little sweet snack for someone who isn't crazy about sweets, like me. If you have a bigger sweet tooth, they do have strawberry and cream cheese filled croissants, cinnamon rolls, and lots of other larger confections that look incredible. I've been pretty impressed with their lunch options, too. I'm not usually a chicken salad lover but the rave reviews from others made me try it, and I certainly didn't regret it. (Yes, it was on a croissant too. I'd probably enjoy dirt on one of those, but I swear it was good!) The soups have been hit or miss though. My husband had a corn chowder that tasty, but my french onion soup was a little disappointing. I was pretty surprised at that--wouldn't a French bakery have a great french onion soup? But the onions could have been caramelized better and it was, sadly, missing that all-important melted cheese. There was a little melted cheese over the baguette slice, but I was looking for the melted-over-the-top, can barely-get-your-spoon-in, huge-strings-of-cheese-that-get-all-over-your-face kinda thing. Maybe they don't do it because their bowls are plastic, but I wish they had some oven-proof bowls just for this dish. If you eat there, you have to sit in the little corridor. Even if it's cold out, it's temperature controlled in there and you'll feel like you're eating outside even on the rainiest of days. It just puts me in a great mood.

BEST BREAD IN MEMPHIS. I have been missing the soft on the inside, flaky and crisp on the outside, with just the right amount of salt- bread that can basically be found anywhere in France, Germany and Austria. La Baguette has somehow managed to bring that home here to Memphis. Their lunch specials are pretty decent, I don't remember the exact prices but I would say comparable to Panera Bread. I had the oft-raved about chicken salad sandwich with the spicy tomato soup, both were amazing. The bread and chicken salad will keep me coming back here, plus the inside is kinda quaint and charming with the street-style atmosphere (you feel like you are outdoors at a cafe in Paris or Vienna or something, even though you are inside which is a nice reprieve from gray or stormy weather.) Service was also great, very, very quick and with a smile. This won't be necessarily a regular in my lineup, but a place I do hope to return to.

My son wanted to go to a bread bakery similar to the one in his favorite movie "Kiki's delivery service" and their counter display was pretty similar. A bit pricey for the quality of goods served there Pretty average macarons & petit fours. The store itself is adorable inside, we may return but wouldn't go out of my way for this one.

  • Joelle P.

This is just an easy go-to spot. It's yummy, quick, and charming. Their forte is the bakery but I also enjoy their lunches, whether I'm eating there or picking it up to-go. My favorite is the tomato soup on a cold day with a fresh baguette! And any sandwich on a croissant is divine. There are two counters - one for the bakery and the other for the restaurant. If you are ordering lunch, at least check out the pastries. They're so good! You might also want to check out the section for day old bread on sale. Its better and cheaper than you will find in the grocery store!
