This is a wonderful place. The food is above average. The service is spectacular. Chappy is an awesome server. After a few visits she will remember your drink order. And she will make you feel like family ( one of her Babies). I love eating here and don't forget to ask for the specials. The specials are not advertised but they are wonderful.

I'll preface this by admitting I am not a big fan of Mexican food. Then I saw Chris M's photo of the Pozole, a soup, served at El Puerto only on Sunday. Now, I am a huge soup fan, so his photo roused my appetite. My sister came by and has dined at this restaurant a number of times. She said she has always enjoyed her visits, so it was not a hard sell to get her to join me. The complimentary chips were very fresh and perfectly fried. I'm also not a big salsa fan but there are no complaints here. The salsa was very fresh and obviously made in house. One of the better versions I have tasted. A side order of Queso dip was blended with minced jalapenos and rated average to good. My sister ordered Beef Fajitas. They were served with the standard rice and beans all of which looked very good and she did enjoy her meal. Now, on to the reason for the visit, the Pozole. El Puerto's version is a hearty soup of pork, hominy, roasted red peppers and onions. It is served with a side plate of fresh chopped jalapeno, onion, radish, cabbage and lime quarters to garnish as you desire. I put it all in. Those must have been some hot jalapenos because I ended up with a rather spicy (hot) soup. The large serving was filling and delicious. The service was charming and efficient. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I know most of my Yelp friends enjoy Mexican food so this is a place you should put in your bookmarks.

Got to the restaurant at 9:15 on Sunday with a closing time of 10. We were the only people in the place an they made us feel welcome and not like they were just trying to get out and go home. Service was as usual very good and quick. This was our third time to eat here and was very good tonight. Just wanted something light and tried the tortilla soup which was really good. The chicken stock was obviously from scratch and was full of flavor. The cheese was a little different type than usuall and went with the broth very well. The chicken was tender which is not ways the case with tortilla soup. I would recommend getting the tortillas on the side so they don't get soggy. We also had the steak tacos and they were very well seasoned and tender. This place gets my " I'll be back" rating. If you want to try some good food at resonance prices you could do much worse!

They have an AYCE lunch special that actually isn't that bad. You get up to 4 items per order and they're just standard tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tostadas, beans, or rice. Pretty large portions for what we got that day for lunch, and I ordered 4 tacos, 2 enchiladas 2 tostadas, and then 2 more tacos. Their chips/salsa are pretty good, but the salsa is on a bit of the sweet side my friend told me, although that day it wasn't. They do have a varied selection of hot sauces that they will bring to the table if you request, which is really nice. The service was quick, and our drinks were kept topped off, and overall a great experience. Will definitely be going back again soon!

I haven't been in a while, but El Puerto is always good for a good time. The staff is so friendly and will even have a dance party with you if you put a good song on the juke box! The food is above average Mexican fare and the prices are great. They always have fresh margaritas and Jell-O shots, so be sure to have a few and let loose!

Super solid and simple Mexican place with friendly folks and good prices. Had the Heuvos Rancheros and a taco. All cheap and really solid all around. Not the best location and it looks divey. But inside is clean and the food is done well.

Hubby and I came here Sunday around 2. It was empty save for a few customers. The place was pretty run-down- my booth had a giant rip in the seat. But the server was friendly and nice. The food here is ok, but not exactly the most enjoyable thing I've ever had. The salsa was spicy and flavorful and the chips were normal quality. Hubby got the huevos con chorizo and it was pretty good, but my enchilada was kind of blah. They have more authentic options, such as tacos al pastor, but you have to get three at a time. Neither hubby nor I are fond of being forced to buy more than one taco at a time because then we cannot get the variety we like to get. The only reason this isn't a 2 is because the food was so cheap that it made up for the lack of quality. Note: They have a coupon in the Memphis City Saver Coupon Book so look for it if you're a fan of this place.

This is one of my favorite authentic Mexican restaurants. It's a small, locally owned restaurant. It's run by a small family who usually are at the place. They are extremely sweet and friendly. There is an outdoor patio with coverings, a jukebox, and a bar. The food is consistently delicious.

This is a place that always provides consistent quality food! Whether it's the chips and salsa, the cheese dip with chorizo added, or the great alcohol specials I always enjoy my experience!! The friendly smiles and great attitude of staff is nice too!

Absolutely the worst service I've ever experienced at any restaurant ever. Starts off with a rude waitress who, after we order margaritas and are trying to decide how many people will partake of, says, "How many glasses?! HELLO?!" I'm sorry, are we taking to long? I'm sorry, there goes your tip? After it takes me having to search for the waitress in this minuscule establishment to ask her for water refills, it takes another twenty minutes to order food. We order, we get food, and it is less than adequate. My chicken, cheese, and rice had maybe a quarter size of cheese in the middle of the plate. I asked for more, and they insisted there was more than enough on it. DISAGREED. I asked for more and the manager said I could pay for queso. Pay more for what I had originally ordered? Absolutely not. As a person who works in this business, as many times as the customer is not right....the customer is right. There is a difference between good customer service and bad customer service. This. Is. Not. Good. I gave my plate back, and they offered nothing further. That's absolutely not acceptable. This restaurant has given me no reason to ever come back here again. Even with all the UNDERAGE drinking they allow.

I got the shrimp & talapia....and it was not good. The rice, shrimp, & fish were all dry & not worth the 13.00 I spent on it. Granted I am not from the area so I am not sure what the expectation should have been. But I would not return.

Nice dining setting. Friendly service. Good prices. Modest Mexican, but 4-star rating based on favorite item on menu: shrimp fajita. Quite delicious. They also have an all-you-can-eat lunchtime deal. I plan to return for the fajitas.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
