Went here for a birthday party And felt like I was in another city. The place was packed so we didn't budge from our seats because we would have been left standing. bar service was fast and drinks good - the food was excellent too. A would highly recommend for drinks with friends but not a place you go for a quiet dinner. It's loud and lots of people walking about.

Alchemy is classy and casual, hipster and refined, and fits the midtown vibe to a tee with an upscale twist. The drinks are tall and tasty and the small plate menu is filled with unique tastes and textures. The decor is something like shabby chic industrial, and it all comes across as modern yet comfortable. When we visited last, on a late Saturday afternoon, there were quite a few tables and booths available and it was a really pleasant, subdued atmosphere. At other times, it can be more crowded and excited, as most bars can be. First, looking at the drink menu, it's a little overwhelming and exciting all at once. Trying to conjure up in my mind what each unique mixture would taste like is a little bit of a challenge but it was almost as much fun talking about a decision between a Hound Dog, Boss Crump, and a Main Street Shakedown as it was to drink them. I think my favorite drink there is a Zippin Pippin, but they have a mix for every taste. The small plate food is good but... It almost seems like sometimes they take pains to make a dish fancy or exotic over making it something that tastes good altogether. This is coming from someone who loves to try new things, so I appreciate the uniqueness but feel taste suffers in some dishes. That's not to say the food isn't good, because it is, but it could be better with a little more simplicity. The service has been solid but sometimes lacks personality. Managers seem to check on us regularly, which is a nice touch. I always prefer table over bar, so I can't really speak to service at the bar. I'd recommend Alchemy whole-heartedly for anyone looking for good drinks, a cool vibe and some new twists on old favorites.

I've been here multiple times and every time the hostess is rude / snotty, I'm really surprised this isn't mentioned in other reviews. I guess I don't meet their standard of ideal customer. The cocktails are really good though. I'm not one for just standing around but they are really weird about people sitting in the couches by the bar. I still can't figure out what the rules are for being deemed worthy of these seats. I've come when it's been really crowded and they are empty and I've come when the entire place is practically empty and the staff still acts put out if you'd like to sit there. The food is hit or miss for me and it's overpriced for what you get, which I wouldn't mind if there was great service but see above. For whatever reason I've been deemed not cool enough by the hostess staff which if fine, there's plenty of other places to take my uncool money.

Wasn't impressed. Maybe because we went during Cooper-Young fest and it was crowded. The menu was different. They were great about getting a grilled cheese for our toddler. I get it. Not a toddler friendly place but he was starving and needed to eat, they were close. The food was ok. Nothing great. They get 3 stars because they were so accommodating to the kiddo.

Unique and delicious food offerings at a very reasonable price for an upscale place. Outstanding custom cocktail menu. Trendy decor and a nice outside sidewalk patio. And best of all, the most professional waitress I have had in the south. She was on it - made great suggestions, always attentive, nonintrusive. she was a star!

I have to say, I really was not feeling the food here like I had hoped I would. My boyfriend brought us here for my 21st birthday after getting a recommendation from his coworker. We each ordered a drink. The "Oh Clementine" I got consisted of clementine vodka with fresh orange juice and strawberry puree. It was pretty tasty. We then got the hush puppies, which I have to say were the highlight of my meal. They were delicate, crispy, and full of delicious cheese. The garlic dipping sauce was the perfect compliment. I'm glad we asked our waitress before we ordered the $14 crab cakes...turns out it's one small crab cake. Places like this really irritate me with their overpriced, underwhelming tiny portions. Speaking of small portions...for the main course, we both ordered the pan seared hanger steak. It was served with duck fat roasted fingerling potatoes, which honestly tasted like plain boiled potatoes. They had absolutely no flavor and the paprika dipping sauce did not help. It actually had a really unpleasant taste, to be honest. The steak itself was overcooked on the outside while way too raw on the inside. It tasted like the only seasoning they used was sea salt, which they definitely overdid. I think that adding a nice vegetable to the plate would have helped balance it out a bit. The overall appearance of the meal was beautiful--the steak was sliced thinly and the potatoes were arranged in a decorative manner. The decor of the restaurant was modern and fun. It definitely is not your classic Memphis restaurant. If the food was priced reasonably and I was just ordering the hush puppies, maybe I would go back. For now, I don't think I'll be back soon.

I have been here twice, now. Both times were for cocktails, only, and both visits were awesome. The ambiance is chic and comfortable, and they don't blast "club" music, so you can actually hear the conversation you're having! They have couches, tables, and a whole raised seating area in the back for larger parties. They also make a fantastic gin cocktail! I have yet to order any food, although the menu certainly is tempting. I will be back for dinner, sometime, but this is one of my favorite little places for good drinks in an upscale atmosphere.

I can't believe I haven't updated my @AlchemyMemphis review until now. Not only am I the duchess here, but I am in a complete and total love affair with this place...you'll find me here at least twice a week...and almost every Sunday for brunch. I love the atmosphere, I love the bartenders, I love the waiters (shoutout to Bethany), I love the drinks, I love the people who come here, I am just in a constant state of love love love when I walk through the doors. But do you know who I love more than anyone in this building? Cy, the head of Alchemy catering, who did my 30th birthday party...and people are still raving about the food. He made everything so easy peasy for me and I can't express how appreciative I am. He held my hand through the entire process and made it so I didn't have to do anything but tell him what menu items I wanted and **poof!** there they were. So if you want a classy cocktail? Alchemy. If you want a sophisticated atmosphere? Alchemy. If you want a great place to meet someone for a first date? Alchemy. If you want someone to cater a bomb dinner? Alchemy. If you want a delightful brunch? Alchemy. So yeah, I love this place.

Great atmosphere and location. We were here on a quiet Wednesday night before heading to an 8:30pm Grizz game. I had to step out and take a phone call and told the hubby to just select a few things for us to share from the menu. Yeah, probably shouldn't have done that. Our palates are a little different and he selected things that I would not have selected: the Southern Antipasta plate with several salads, one which was a smoked chicken Salad (I don't like smoked meat), a pimento cheese salad (nothing special IMHO) and some pickles veggies. Meh. Then he ordered the roasted brussel sprouts. I do love my roasted veggies, but I had made roasted sprouts at home the night before we came to Alchemy and I thought mine were better. Just sayin. Thankfully, he let me select the third item after we'd sampled these: the Basil breaded fish pasta. Bingo! My palate started singing and it wasn't the blues. I think I'll need to come back and select my own things next time, to be fair. And I will gladly.

Went here for drinks and nibbles with friends on a weekend night. First, drink menu is great. Super good choices and libations. We moved onto apps and had a cheese plate and another appetizer. There was enough for 4 of us, and given the "small plates", we thought we would order a smaller dinner. There was nothing small at all about my husband's soup and massive grilled cheese. It looked so good. Unfortunately, I was already trying to finish the shrimp and grits I ordered. That's my go-to ---- and I can easily say it was the best I have had in Memphis. The only buggy thing? Our server was a little much and snippy. She had cleared away our signed credit card form before we left. Food - 5. Service - 3.

I've been here for drinks numerous times, but this past Saturday night was the first time I ordered food and the experience was so moving I had to write a review. Backstory: my friends and I were at Young Ave watching the Grizz v OKC game and chugging beers until they decided to cut the game off in the last 2 mins to show some dumb UFC fight so we decided to be classy and get drinks at Alchemy. Once seated, waters were brought and drinks were attempted to be ordered. Boyfriend got the Suffering Bastard (not because he is one, but bc he loves them) and this one was no different. I still heard praises of this drink the day after. I, on the other hand, went with red sangria. I've been on a mission lately to find the same one I had when I was in Brugge, Belgium and I've constantly failed. This time it was no different. The waitress even failed in describing how it was made. I asked if there was fruit, and she said yes. My drink arrived with some sour wine and a toothpick with two lemon slices and a lime slice. Needless to say I did not drink it. But I digress. Let's move onto the Pan Seared Hangar Steak. Everything on that plate was remarkable. If it wasn't bad etiquette, I would've licked that plate cleaned. The steak was cooked to perfection. It was still rare with juices still overflowing (as how a hangar steak should be prepared) and the potatoes were to die for: Not greasy but still flavorful with the oil. The paprika aioli sauce paired very well with both the potatoes and steak. I can't even tell you what the other 4 people at our tables got because I was in such a trance with this dish. Also if you're wondering who got the last bite of steak...I was feeling generous (and full from the sweet potato fries and beer from Young Ave) so I saved it for the boyfriend. Look at how great I'm doing with the whole putting other people's hunger before my own.

We were planning to visit Alchemy for Friday night dinner but after a flight delay, we rescheduled for Sunday brunch. I wonder if dinner would have been better... The brunch menu offered appetizers, plates for sharing and larger entrees with the typical southern fare - shrimp and grits, fried oysters, mac and cheese, pork chops, steak and fried catfish. The fried oyster salad had flavorless oysters (***try the ones at Beauty Shop down the street!) on a bed of spinach. This was a relatively uninspired dish. The quail and waffles was replaced by a special of the day - duck and waffles. This elevation of the typical chicken and waffles sounded good but the execution was a little off. The duck was overcooked and over salted and although the waffles had a nice flavor, they were cold and a little dry. They could have benefited from perhaps a little cinnamon or powdered sugar on top. This place offers reasonably good food but it's not up to par with some of the great brunch places in Memphis. It seems like it's probably a better place to come with friends for a drink with their customizable cocktails rather than for an excellent brunch.

Best brunch we've had in Memphis since moving here 6 months ago. The drunk specials are good. The food is excellent. It was all so fresh and the menu was unique. Try the crab cake benedict and the pimento cheese hash browns.

Great consistent quality brunch in a relaxed atmosphere. Great for those Sunday afternoon casual conversations. The loaded grits are a great expression of a southern breakfast staple.

I have tried several brunches in Memphis and this has been my favorite by far. You can customize your Bloody Mary's or pick from several flavors for a Bellini, and their sangria was phenomenal. They have by far my favorite brunch drinks around and for a very fair price. They have a great variety of liquors and beers on tap. In addition, their crab cake Benedict was so delicious on top of the best biscuit I have ever tasted. You can't go wrong with any of the dishes here. The Benedict dishes were a little pricey, but I think it was worth it. They have other dishes half the price if you're trying not to spend much. I highly recommend this place. Their service is never disappointing and the atmosphere is modern and inviting. Another plus is that there is usually no wait. I say that because you never know, but I have never waited on a table here.

Alchemy is one of my favorite restaurant/bars in Memphis. I'm a big fan of small plates - and the food at Alchemy is consistently delicious, plus the desserts are phenomenal! (This past time I ordered the creme brûlée and had a hard time sharing!) My husband has also raved about the sliders each time we've gone. We both really enjoy the craft cocktails too - fresh ingredients make them extra tasty!

I do love this place for dinner, drinks, and now, especially, brunch. They have a build-your-own bloody mary menu that rocks the charts. From selecting what kind of salt you'd like on the rim (celery, pink Himalayan, etc) to which pickled delectables you'd like dropped in to how hot you'd like it, it was definitely a winner for five bucks. That said, you'll pay for your brunch on the menu. To me, the prices were *super* high. I just had brunch in Rochester last weekend and had a delish eggs benedict for eight bucks that was essentially equivalent to their $18 benedict. For me, the price is way more than ya get. That said, they have tons of space and good drinks. I doubt I'll eat there very much, but I'll drink there often!

Alchemy may just be the coolest place to eat not just in the Cooper Young community, but in Memphis. My wife and I have eaten here twice and I can honestly say that we have enjoyed both of our trips. I highly recommend trying their shrimp and grits and beef sliders.

The grilled cheese and tomato soup combo, is to die for. I've been a few times, and I find that the service tends to be better at a table with a waiter, than when seated at the bar. I am not a huge fan of one of the older male bartenders who tends to be behind the bar often. He is not very friendly, nor very intuitive. I could understand in a busy nightclub setting waiting long stretches for another drink...but during the dinner hour for a pre-dinner cocktail sitting with empty cocktail glasses and empty water glasses waiting 20-30 minutes to get his attention and request another round, is not awesome. Then being told to wait while he completed numerous barback duties before tending to those of us needing drinks, was unfortunate. We chose to tab out and leave instead. This is the same bartender who chased me down the street a few months ago accusing me of walking out on my tab, when my friend who was sitting next to me took it and was paying it with his while I walked a few doors down to grab a table for us and our friends who were meeting us at another establishment.

While visiting Memphis for a weekend and staying in this neighborhood, I went to Alchemy twice. The first time around was really pleasant. We went not long after they opened on Friday afternoon. I really liked the atmosphere and it was a lot bigger inside than I expected it to be. The bartender was very chill without being too aloof and we really enjoyed talking with her. My boyfriend drank beers and I had a couple of mojitos. They were very good and I found out later only $5 because it was happy hour. We also ordered the cheese and charcuterie plate that was really fantastic. I can't remember everything that was on it but there were three types of cheese, two types of sausage and one ham, and little crostini chips that were not too filling. I appreciated the lack of pretension in what was on the plate and at $17 you really get your money's worth. Our second visit to Alchemy on Sunday afternoon at the tail end of brunch was not as relaxing. It really wasn't busy but the bartender seemed distracted and kind of flaky... For instance the glass of water left over on the bar from the person before us was never cleared the whole time we were there. I ordered the oysters but they were out of them so that was also a bummer. Then when we were trying to get the check the bartender was chatting with two people at the bar for at least 5 minutes and we felt too awkward and rude to interrupt. So I guess the service is just hit or miss here!

Their innovative cocktails are executed well and at a very decent price compared to mixologists in major cities. We had too much to drink, but for the lightweights, I would recommend the Oh Clementine. Dancing Jimmy's Secret tasted like a standard vodka tonic drink with purple grapes that added no flavor. For the stronger drinks, I would recommend the Alchemist, Suffering Bastard, or the Red Headed Step Child. The food was pretty good. The mac n cheese, sliders, bread pudding, and the asparagus were highlights. I didn't particularly like the fish tacos, crab cakes, or the shrimp and grits. Not to say they were bad, but seafood is not their strong suit. Service was prompt and attentive.

First off, wish I could do half stars, would go 3.5. Stopped in here on a Tuesday evening and they were not very crowded. Our bartender was very knowledgeable about the cocktails and quick with information about how the ones we were interested in were made. We found our choices to be very good and a normal price for a craft cocktail bar of $11 a piece. When a few more folks came in it seemed that the service suffered a bit. I would probably attribute this to not enough staff for a very large bar area. This place has a very large bar and with the attention needed for perfect craft cocktails you may need to have a few more knowledgeable bartenders. All in all a fine place for a great cocktail. Best regards, Tony

Racist. The manager and the servers singled out my black friend and asked if he belonged there.

I've been here on and off since this place has been opened and it has been pretty consistent. The drinks are getting better and better and they get a round of applause for adding TEQUILA COCKTAILS!! not just a margarita but actual tasty cocktails. And for a mama who still enjoys a nice ladies night out and a tequila beverage I was one happy cookie to see that. The music is always between loungey and quiet party. It's filled with people on the weekends mingling and seemed like a good spot to spot a nice looking lady. The fellas weren't that good looking though, but I do have a married woman's eyes now so idk. The food has always been my least favorite. I've tried a few small plates and it seriously takes me a lot to get full so it's kind of the place to go after my real meal and just order a fee to stay as far from crappy drunk as possible or eat a little something and still fit in that bondage dress. One complaint would be that it seemed like the cooks from my view were having too much fun themselves because they left out the andouille sausage from our Mac n Cheese. Now fortunately it was still delicious but I had to tell the waitress and she had them fix. But I don't know how you forget that. Hmph. But anywho overall it's definitely on the top of my list for martini night with my ladies or the end to a hot date with my man or even a good spot to pregame before heading out to dance. If it's more on the pricey side for you but you can handle a stiff drink order a whiskey cocktail and I'm sure one will get ya there lol.

This is a very nice, trendy, chic bar and restaurant for those who are either looking for just a drink at the bar or for a fancy meal. It's pricey but worth it for special occasions. The service is polished and professional. It's right in the middle of the cool and trendy Cooper-Young area. The drink list is very extensive. The food menu is fairly limited but the dishes themselves are scrumptious works of art. It gets quite loud so don't expect a quiet dinner.

Terrible drink prices and extremely small plate foods. I can understand a pricey drink in midtown Cooper young area but this was unreal.

I've been wanting to go here for a while and I finally went to Alchemy for brunch after church on a recent Sunday. I'll definitely be working my way back there soon. We walked right in and were greeted and seated immediately. They were busy, but not too busy - it was a really cool scene of couples and groups hanging out and having a good time chowing down on what looked like some at least decent food. The atmosphere was nice and the decorations were neat. The most important part is always the food though, which didn't disappoint this afternoon. I had the BEC (bacon egg and cheese) Sandwich which was the best BEC I've had in recent memory. I'm not a big hot sauce fan, but it had just a little splash on it and it did the job nicely. My girlfriend had their blueberry pancakes which I tried and really enjoyed. I may get them next time. We both had mimosas and they were good. In fairness, mimosas are hard to mess up, but kudos to the bartender for not messing them up anyway. Our waitress was quick, efficient and pleasant as well. You must try this one of many Cooper-Young great food establishments.

I definitely love the atmosphere here. Very swanky lounge type feel to this restaurant/bar. Absolutely more of an upscale lounge than a bar I would say. Very awesome selection of martinis and bourbons. The blueberry martini is a favorite here and I would recommend it. Actually, the bartenders informed me that this place specializes in bourbons and that they actually make their own simple syrups, juices, and purees. My bartenders were great. I told my bartender that I've never had bourbon. He thoroughly explained how bourbon's were made and barreled and walked me through how bourbons are cured. After our discussion and me informing him of the types of liquors and wines I currently like, we determined that whiskey would be better for my pallet. He introduced me to Rittenhouse Rye Whiskey and Weller Special Reserve. I enjoyed both however one Rittenhouse would've done the job all by itself. That whiskey is 100 proof and I was very tipsy after one glass. All in all, I highly recommend this place. 2 thumbs up.

This place was super cool. Really fantastic, hip, and modern decor and that's how the food looked and was presented. We were just here for a drink really quick, but the bartenders were super nice and my friend ordered a 16 dollar Manhattan. He gave me a taste it was pretty dang good! I just had a brew but loved the environment and all the plates looked divine! Totally a place I would stop back if I had more time in Memphis!

It is so unfortunate that I have to give Alchemy 1 star. 1 star for a bar where I love taking my friends and guests from out of town, and where I love to sit and enjoy people watching. WHY after saying that do I have to give them 1 star?? Unfortunately, my perfect image of Alchemy was ruined this past New Years Eve when a friend of mine was in town from Houston. After dinner, we arrived around 930pm at Alchemy to find a seat at the bar and enjoy my usual activities. It wasn't crazy crowded yet, but the bar was full. We found a spot at the end of the bar to order and stand while we waited (and hoped) for someone to get up from their seats. After about 45 minutes a really nice couple leaned over to advise us that they were getting up from the bar, and asked if we wanted their seats. YES!! Wonderful!!! So exciting and lucky!! Considering I had knee surgery in June, I am still a little uncomfortable standing for long periods of time, I was SO excited!!! As the couple got up, my friend and I sat down, hung our coats on the backs of our chairs and prepared for our awesome evening!! Instead, the bartender walked over and advised us that the seats were reserved. I looked with a questioning face and asked her to repeat herself. Considering that the hostess told us when we walked in that we could seat ourselves at the bar, I was concerned and confused? She repeated herself again, and told me that the seats were reserved. My friend and I got up, so we didn't cause a scene, and allowed (what I can only assume) 2 friends of the bartender to sit down. I spoke with the manager. Having waited tables in a customer service environment restaurant for almost 4 years, I knew that I could appeal to the manager, but instead, he simply apologized, advised that it isn't their normal practice, and that was that. And for THAT unfortunately, they get 1 star. Their bartender and manager need to take a class on well, class, and how to focus on their customers. In Memphis, you can't afford to upset a customer. You never know who that customer is...her friends are...or how active she is on Yelp. I can guarantee, I won't be back again.

I went back to alchemy a second time, and I wasn't as impressed. I had their steak which was ok but left me with no desire to order it again particularly as it came cut up in chunks, and the accompanying potatoes were not warm in the least. I also noticed for the first time that there are no vegetables on their "small" plates. It's a meat and potatoes deal and you would need to order a separate salad if you wanted a more balanced meal. So in closing I still really like alchemy, the service is generally good and it has a nice atmosphere. But I think it will be my drinking spot from now on.

This place deserves two stars for its posturing 'craft cocktails' and pretentiously tiny dishes. (I understand small portions, when the food is actually good though.) Alchemy gets one star, however, for its appalling service. It's pretty sad when a rotten apple ruins an otherwise decent bunch, but Alchemy's quasi-genial creeptastic old bar tender certainly soured our experience. Really, I don't care if the bar hired you to woo your "hundreds of social media fans." Just do your job and don't be a deceptive d-wad. This rollicking geezball has to be the single most imperceptive sad excuse for a bartender I've ever encountered. On a single night, he managed to charge my mom for another party's bill, forget that he'd handed her a tab, assumed that I was my mom's husband/date whom walked out on the tab when I went to get our car, then charged my mom again for our tab (thanks mom!), and overcharged our friends and helped himself to an additional $35 tip (on top of a 20% tip). Needless to say, multiple people called the owner to complain, and we were dismayed to see same old fart working the bar a month later. So yeah, we haven't been back. This all happened about two years ago, so I hope he's been fired. Sorta tacky to post such a delayed review, but it's way outweighed by the tackiness of blind grandfather forgetfulness. Or old man liar thief. Whichever you prefer. In any case how the hell did they keep him on board for so long? I've heard similar stories about the same guy several times since. Maybe he's the owner's dad in law? Who knows.. Just go to Next Door.

Cool place. I couldn't quite place what they were going for with their decorations. Eclectic?! The beer list was a good sampling of choices. Our waiter seemed unhappy to be a waiter. It is sad how a bad experience with a waiter can so influence people's thoughts towards a restaurant. I had the sliders with pimento cheese. They were fantastic. I also had a bite of the grilled cheese and tomato soup. It was good. There were a lot of my friends that came in while I was there. So I would assume that the place is normally better than ***. But this time was hindered.

The first time I went to alchemy I was not impressed because I had poor service. I went again to Alchemy following my engagement and they were fantastic. They sat my fiance and I in a private area. Our food was fabulous, the server was attentive, overall it was a great experience!

We haven't been here in awhile... The food and service weren't great the last time we were in... We LOVED it when it opened because of the awesome Mac and cheese, but they got a new chef and the whole menu kind of changed.. I would love to give this place another try because we like Burt so much! We are regulars at his restaurant downtown and KNOW that he runs a good business! We'll definitely be back, I just hope it's better.

This restaurant has definitely been a great addition to the Cooper-Young neighborhood. Objectively, it has all of the necessary ingredients to make an absolutely great place to dine and have drinks. Most of my experience with Alchemy has been with the latter...the drinks. They have a very broad and diverse menu of all different types of craft cocktails, in addition to a respectable array of wine choices. The craft cocktails that I have ordered are almost always completely satisfying and well made. However, this place can get very busy at times. When this happens, the drinks can get sloppy and their quality suffers dramatically. So, be warned if the restaurant is busy when you go there. Also, although I am not a bourbon drinker, I am told that they have a massively respectable assortment to choose from. As far as the food goes, it is average to above average. Some of my favorites, which warrant sampling are: Grilled Artisan Cheese Sandwich; Crab Cakes; Gulf Shrimp and Charred Green Onion Grit Cake; Smoked Gouda and Andouille Sausage Mac & Cheese (yes, it is as good as you are imagining!); and Beef Sliders with Pimento Cheese. The one major drawback to this restaurant, as many other people have observed, can be the service/waitstaff. Even when the restaurant is relatively empty, servers can unexplainably go missing for long periods of time. This is very annoying. Very. The bartenders are the most attentive. However, they are often so slammed and overworked when the restaurant is busy, that they have very little time to attend to everyone's needs that are jammed around the large bar. The interior is very attractive and there are plenty of different seating areas to accommodate multiple party sizes. However, be forewarned...they do NOT take reservations. This means that you could either get right in or be waiting for up to an hour on a table. If possible, I would give this place 3 1/2 stars. However, because I enjoy this restaurant and definitely the neighborhood immensely, I have bumped it up to four stars. However, that could change easily if Alchemy lets taste, quality, or service slip any further.

Molly was our server, she was awesome! The feel is very New York, the food was great and the wine Ironic......

I love Alchemy for happy hour. The cocktail list is inventive and sorted by level of alcohol (from "Lightweight" on up), there's a great beer selection, and lots of comfy spaces to have a conversation with a group of any size. I've NEVER come here at peak dinner/after-dinner hours, so I have never experienced the wait that I'm sure this place has during those high-traffic times. Right as it opens in the afternoon, Alchemy is downright placid (just the way I like it). It's worth mentioning that Alchemy also plates up the best darn grilled cheese in Memphis (and perhaps anywhere). It takes a lot to impress me where grilled cheese is concerned, and this one hits the spot with its baguette-ish bread and deliciously sharp, un-greasy cheese. I'd eat it any day of the week, and you should, too!

I've loved this place since it opened. Yes, it's a little pricey, and yes, obnoxious people from out east have learned about it. I don't care, they did a beautiful job with the space and continue to offer tasty small plates and hard to find booze in an attractive atmosphere. Seriously, look at the bourbon list. One tip: I have noticed some turn over, and although most everyone has been top notch, if its busy and a guy named Parks is bartending, opt for the bar.

Twas a peaceful, rainy evening at Alchemy. My glass twinkled like the stars as I delightfully sipped the heavenly Sparkling Pear cocktail. In between sipping and mingling, I noshed on mouthwatering bacon beef sliders. The butterscotch crème brûlée was ok. The custard lacked smoothness and the peanut brittle lacked air and was very hard. I was crossing my fingers to not leave with a broken tooth. The ambiance was warm and festive with the lighted Christmas tree at the entrance and cool art pieces hanging on the walls throughout the restaurant. I liked the variety of seating arrangements that surrounded the centrally located bar. Our bartenders and servers added to the chill vibe of this hip restaurant bar. They were attentive and hospitable, but not obtrusive. Alchemy is a bright, vibrant place in Midtown Memphis to grab a bite, savor wonderfully prepared cocktails, and converse with friends in a modern atmosphere.

I like the vibe of Alchemy. It's trendy without being overwhelmingly packed. The service was quick, bartender was on point, and the Girl Next Door (watermelon martini) was great.

I just love the atmosphere of this place. The floor to ceiling bar is breathtaking; and the fact that it is two-sided with seating all around definitely increases the availability of a spot to park your bum. The lounge feel also makes it a great spot for a girls' night or even a late evening cocktail with your date. I used to eat dinner here sometimes (love the fish tacos) until I had their Sunday brunch. What a great selection and large portions! (a far cry from the tapas-sized dinner selections)

Every trip to Alchemy is an adventure. The constantly changing menu keeps me from getting in to the rut of always having the same thing. This latest trip yielded artisan grilled cheese with tomato soup, mac & cheese and hangar steak. The grilled cheese and tomato soup were amazing. I'm not a huge fan of tomato soup, but this blend of tomatoes and a hint of cheese were to die for. The centerpiece of the meal was the hangar steak. The steak itself was outstanding. The steak was cooked perfectly and the outside was seared to perfection. My only fault with this particular out was the mashed potatoes. Coming from a restaurant who's menu tends that tends to live outside the box, the potatoes we pedestrian at best, they just tasted bland compared to the rest of the meal. Even with the mediocre spuds, I'd recommend a visit to Alchemy anytime your taste buds are in the mood for an adventure.

You have to understand - I'm fat. And when it comes to food, I'm selfish. I don't want to share my food with you. In fact, i want you to not be able to finish your food so I can eat that, too! So you can imagine a tapas style place isn't my favorite location. This particular location, however, in the heart of the Cooper Young district may become the only tapas place I frequent. I had been planning on coming to this location for some time. Luckily, my boss planned an office outing/Christmas party here, and I was able to sample all of the menu on someone else's dime. I know what you're gonna ask: "Surely you couldn't have eaten every thing on the menu!?" Of course i did! Did you miss the part about me being fat? And don't call me Shirley. While the menu is rather expansive, the portions are relatively modest. If you are like me and have a serious appetite be prepared to drop at least a buck to satiate yourself. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the vegetable dishes (artichokes, brussel sprouts, asparagus) as much as I enjoyed the meat dishes (duck confit, crispy pork belly). I believe the menu rotates on a regular basis, which will encourage people to come here to eat often. The ambiance is fantastic for a date. It's dark and intimate, and very conducive to romance. It is usually fairly busy, but that never seems to detract from prompt service. if you were smart, I would suggest taking a date here; pairing some wonderful cocktails with some delicious, but frustratingly small, plates; pretending you are full; trying not to audibly gasp when you get your bill (cause you're secretly still starving and wondering why the hell you are paying so much money); dropping your date off; and hitting up the nearest dollar menu. Hell, if you're felling generous, you can hit up the dollar menu WITH your date.

Going to an Elite event is always a treat in itself; going to an afterparty with awesome company is even a bigger treat! Imagine the event being a kobe strip, and the after party a creme brulee. Damn, now I am hungry. I had vaguely heard of this place from reviews and local recommendations, so I was glad that I finally got to try it out. There is parking on the left side of the building (about 20 spots). There was a sign for valet, but I did not see an attendant. If those options are taken, then hit up the street! Upon arriving, I noticed there was a lot of seating, indoors and out. It was a beautiful evening, but nobody was on the patio (maybe it was the staffing, howthehellwouldiknow?). The party I was with sat at a circle table, that was kind of low (thankfully I didn't take the table with me when I got up!), and intimate. Hell, I think 7-8 of us sat there! The cocktail menu was as solid as Barry Bond's bat in the 1995 season (it was a great year for him, awful simile, I know). Great selection of bourbons as well. I started off with some house punch that was pink. It tasted like watermelon. It was epic. The beer selection was OK- but was redeemed by having a selection from Laughing Skull- a brewery from ATL. The food menu seemed to be a concept of small(er) plates- or plates to share. Think of it as Americanized tapas. I ordered the pimento sliders thanks to a tip by the Memphis Belle. And yes, they were wonderful. At this outing, I got to meet new people, enjoy great food and drink, all in an awesome atmosphere. Hell, the server reminded me of the bartender from the Gold Club (was it her!?!). I can definitely see myself coming back here, I just wished t was open a little later!

I've not tried the food yet, but the bar is fantastic. Knowledgeable bartender who spent time discussing drinks with Little Miss Indecisive over here and helped steer me towards a perfect cocktail. The bourbon selection is impressive. The food menu sounded amazing, but I'd already eaten dinner. I'm hoping for the time to swing back in over the holidays next month while visiting family.

Alchemy hasn't been opened for long in Cooper Young, but it has a consistent following. It always has a crowd. The lounge features tapas and has several Memphis inspired cocktails, like the Pink Palace and the Zippin Pippin. They have a wrap around bar that is really a major focus of the restaurant. It makes a large square and patrons can sit on three sides of it. The kitchen has some openness, so you can watch the chefs at work. I had a whiskey diet coke. The drink is about $6. The specialty drinks run about $10 or $11 dollars. Garrett had the artisan cheese plate. It had a variety of cheeses and some bread. I enjoy tasting different types of cheeses. It costs $15. I had the roasted brussel sprouts with Benton's bacon, apples and spiced pecans. It costs $9. Bacon makes everything taste good. I just recently began to enjoy brussel sprouts. Previously, I have had the sliders that were topped with pimento cheese. They are delicious. Alchemy is a nice part of Cooper Young. Surely, you have already tried it.

Hip, new trendy bar/eatery in Cooper - Young Loved the sophisticated atmosphere! I had the Hot Pepper Jelly Glazed Chicken Wings with Cheddar and Bacon Cornbread & Roasted Asparagus with Romesco Sauce - both delicious! The pepper in the hot wings has just a mild kick to it, not scorching hot, which is a good thing for me. Courtesy of a friend got to taste the Denver Lamb Ribs with Tzatziki Sauce and Brussel Sprouts with Bacon, Pistachios and Granny Smith Apples and all I can say is I'll be getting them the next time I visit. Get the cheesecake trio - you'll love it! I think the valet parking is overkill but obviously a lot of people use it. This place is a winner and I hope it is around for a long time!

I've been here 3 times but I haven't had the food here yet, so my review may be biased (grain of salt not included). The first time I came here was a year ago and it was packed and since they don't take reservations there's a wait which would be fine if the bar didn't get slammed, mix that in with the "meat market" vibe it was less than worth it. BUT, the last couple of times I've been there, the vibe and clientele have steadily changed to the "less douchy" side of the spectrum which makes it ok to deal with the no-reservation policy. Why 4 stars...well I'd give them 3.75 but can't do fractions here soooo there you go: 1. The space itself is pretty nice and they've done a great job with the decor and actually using the space without making it too tight. 2. The staff have been really nice and not pretentious, a plus anywhere and anytime. 3. The bar/bartenders actually know how to make a drink.....go ahead, ask for an Old Fashioned! That's right, you'd think most bartenders would know how to make a standard drink....IT.IS.IN.THE.NAME! But you'd be surprised how many "different" versions I've received in this city. So, how an Old Fashioned is made has essentially become my litmus test for a "good" bar/bartender....and Alchemy's definitely made the cut. If I try the food, I'll update rating and review....until then, i feel good with the 4/5.

Overall, the dining experience was a pleasant one. Not too busy for a Monday evening, so we were seated right away. Server was attentive and friendly. Fish tacos are excellent. Grilled cheese with tomato soup was good (and large portion) but the only complaint would be that the soup is just way too sweet. Hardly any acidity left in the tomato. Friend had shrimp and grits and said it too was delicious.

Oh Alchemy -- with your great food, incredibly Bloody Mary's (brunch options of building your own has to be the best idea, ever). Steak and potatoes are some of my favorite in the city, and the grits they have on Sundays are absolutely mind blowing. With this quality of food and such fun ambiance why do you have to have such a hit or miss staff? The blonde haired manager is pretty okay, she always looks pissed off but I have seen her be extremely helpful with vegans trying to find something they can eat (she is apparently vegan herself). With the waiting staff I've had the full spectrum from absolutely un-tipable, to rock star. I will disagree with the lady about the seats at the bar in regards to the bartender saying seats were reserved. While that was absolute crap on the bartenders side -- what is the manager really supposed to do there? Chastise the employee for the sake of appearances and asked the two people who sat down to leave?

First, we loved the ambiance. Cooper-Young on a Friday night, and it was busy, so the valet parking was welcome. The bar looked lively and there were plenty of people having a great time. They have the best Artisan Cheese Plate I've ever had. And we love our cheese plates. Great wine list -- we enjoyed a yummy rich pinot. Jim had the Pan Seared Hanger Steak, Duck Fat Roasted Fingerling Potatoes, Smoked Paprika Aioli and I ordered the Seared Diver Scallops with Winter Squash, Red Coconut Curry, Cucumber and Lime. Jim loved the steak, and those scallops were incredibly rich and delicious. Highly recommend. I don't think either of us left anything on the plate. It's definitely a great place for a nice, relaxing, romantic dinner. We'll certainly be back.

Tonight was the second time we ate at alchemy, and it was magic. We have tried every other 'rated' venue and they all pale in comparison. Every dish was unique, well flavored and delicious. The oysters were soft and crispy at the same time. The shiitake salad was brilliant as were the scallops and best of all, the fish tacos. Kudos again to the best meal in Memphis. How wonderful to find an unpretentious venue!

  • Channa P.

I just don't like this place. Or it's valet parking, or it's crowd, or it's cost. I'm biased because I miss the club Dish that was much cooler and a little cheaper that used to be next door. And I think Young Ave Deli across the street is awesome. The first time I went to Alchemy it was a bit Yuppie and very packed because it was less than a month old. I've been back only once, and not had the food here. My mediocre Dark and Stormy (Rum and Ginger Beer) cost $9, so that pretty much was my last straw. I actually hear this place is really cool during happy hour...IDK.

I've been to Alchemy three times in two weeks. The first two times I had drinks with friends and didn't order food... What a silly mistake that was! Not until my third trip did I discover how good the food is at Alchemy. Let me back up a bit... The first time I went to Alchemy I was blown away upon walking in the door. It was a Thursday and the place was packed. Beauty everywhere! Beautiful people, beautiful lighting, beautiful flowers and plants, beautiful food... and most striking is the beautiful u-shaped bar that takes up the center of the main dining room. I felt like I was walking in to a restaurant in Chicago or New York City. There is nothing like Alchemy in Memphis. When I visited Alchemy again last week it was a Friday and the place was alive with excitement. I meet up with 7 other people and we decided to sit at the bar rather than wait for a table. We ordered drinks and 7 or 8 different plates. Everything was great. I especially enjoyed the scallops and the veal. On my next visit I would like to try the lamb ribs because they looked pretty darn good, even from the other end of the bar. Alchemy is great for people watching too! If you haven't been there yet, you need to check it out.

SO GOOD! I honestly was surprised...I've heard many reviews of this place that range from both ends of the spectrum...but I was impressed. The food is extremely expensive, though. It's a tapas bar, of sorts, but the items on the menu are exorbitant in price, if you ask me. They have a NY bartender come in and create new cocktails for them every couple of months...and they organize their cocktail menu by how strong the cocktail is...but, believe me, even their 'lightweight' cocktails are meant to knock you out. Staff is friendly, albeit young. But I enjoyed the place overall.

I love the atmosphere here. It is so young and edgy here. They also have a great bar. Everything I tried is very good. Price wise is a bit expensive and when I was in undergrad my friends did not want to pay that much but I think it is worth it.

I like the atmosphere at Alchemy (almost reminds me of NYC with the tapas and mixology drinks) and when we can find a table to relax, sip on cockatils and eat some apps, we typically have a great time. We even stopped in late night to snag some Moscow Mules (I think it was my introduction to this fab drink) and although it may be a little more pricey than other local hangouts, I think the quality of food/drink and the atmosphere make it well worth it. I'm a tapas and wine bar kinda girl so this is one of my local faves.

It's been awhile since I are at Alchemy, but I do remember the shiitake salad being phenomenal! I have been here on several other occasions for drinks, and the service was pretty good. It's a bit on the pricey side, but being that it's in Cooper Young and has a good atmosphere, this is a place I would like to come occasionally.

They officially have it together again! My wife and I strolled in to Alchemy on a Saturday....at 4:30. We've been several times. This was our second visit since the chef situation changed, and I can safely say they've found their stride again, as it relates to food anyway. I can't speak to the bar scene late at night as we....can't stay up that late anymore. But as far as early bird specials go, we will definitely be back. So 430 is not the best time to hit any nice restaurant. You can often expect crappy service and half the food not to be prepped and ready and to generally be forgotten and/or ignored. Not so at Alchemy. We got a good table, not a crappy one. Good start. Our waiter was there immediately to talk us through the changes in the menu (there weren't many, but the portion sizes have changed a bit). He gave us an accurate assessment of what to expect as far as portion size goes with each section of the menu. We ordered a bottle of wine, which he brought out very quickly. On to the food. We started with the mushroom salad and the fried green tomatoes which were both excellent. The mushrooms were an especially big hit...a big pile, cooked perfectly, next to a nice bed of greens. Next we ordered the tomato soup/grilled cheese and the fish tacos. We nearly licked our plates. The grilled cheese was done on a kind of crusty bread that was excellent. It was a pretty large portion actually, and perfect for dipping in to the soup. During the meal I think the chef had prepared something for the staff in the back room to eat, and we were pretty close to that room, but more than one member of the wait staff grabbed empty plates or refilled wine as they passed. Nice to see everyone pitching in rather than letting us be our server's problem alone. We did have to wait a bit longer than I would have expected for our main courses, but, at 430, I wouldn't expect them to have all the prep work done. Rather than ignore us and pretend it didn't happen our waiter explained that the early hour slowed the kitchen a bit. No big deal. When the food came it was perfect. Worth the wait. We did not feel neglected one bit. The waiter brought the dessert menu but wasn't pushy about it. We went with the pots de creme which was fantastic, and a couple of glasses of port. A different member of the wait staff took this order...again they pitched in instead of walking by our empty plates and glasses and ignoring us. Well-trained wait staff makes all the difference. Our check appeared at the right time, but it was pouring rain outside. We didn't feel rushed to leave and waited around until the rain backed off a bit. All in all, this was an excellent experience. The food was as good as any you'll find in Memphis, and the preparation and service met our expectations for the price. We are happy to put Alchemy back on our regular list and look forward to trying other menu items.

Best cocktails in Memphis!!! At the bar, Parks is a MASTER Mixologist with wit and charm. When it comes to a Martini you cannot stump him. Whether you prefer the James Bond shaken not stirred or the fruity-type, or the adventurous just surprise me... he will AMAZE you! If we are not eating at Alchemy, we always stop in for a couple of libations with Parks.

I love Alcehmy. It is the perfect speical treat for a nice night out. It is hard to find a seat sometimes, however, and when this happens you usually have to sit at the tables in the back left of the restaurant which are really boring unless you have a big group. I mean, I love to people watch, and that area is just not the prime location for such a great people watching venue like Alchemy. The pimento cheese sliders and rock shrimp and chorizo mac and cheese are both delicious. The cocktails are amazing, I love both the Sparkling Pear and the Oh Clementine but they are on the lighter side. I can't wait to try more. They also seem to change their food menu up quite a bit, so that is fun and keeps you coming back.

I went back to Alchemy recently with a group of 6 friends for my birthday dinner--and they knocked my socks of yet again--so I thought I would update my previous review with dishes that I had this second time around. European Quail stuffed with Cornbread and Andouille Sausage (3stars) Denver Lamb Ribs with Tzatziki Sauce (5stars) Roasted Duck Spring Rolls with Spicy Orange Dipping Sauce (3stars) Jerked Pork and Caramelized Onion Quesadilla with Black Bean and Pineapple Relish (4stars) Rock Shrimp and Chorizo Mac and Cheese (5stars)---OMG this is good! Pan Seared Diver Scallops over Creamy Roasted Corn and Edamame Succotash (3stars) Chile Roasted Fish Tacos (3stars) Alchemy Antipasto (3stars) Stella Rosa Dessert wine (5stars)--seriously thinking about ordering a bottle to keep at home Also, honorable mention for the desserts especially the Carmelized Apple Creme Brulle and Caramel Cheescake that was part of a trio of cakes.

I ate here a couple years back when they first opened, didn't have yelp then but it was a great experience. I ordered multiple plates and it was really small I mean Barbie food. Pricey as hell so I didn't return there for food only for drinks which can be pretty steep. I'm a simple chick at times just go to a dive bar for a pbr but I was feeling fancy that day. Anyways I went brunch hopping Sunday with my pal and alchemy was our second stop the pimento cheese hash brown was really good and only $5 and I had a lot I notice they lower the price some and gave a bigger portion. But the 2 strips of bacon I got for $4 was disappointing. I really enjoyed the different flavors of bellinis blackberry and I got 2 surprise me Bellini which the bartender choose your flavor which was a kiwi strawberry & guava yummy!!! They was only $5 but in a small flute hey! I'm all about portions then price! It's all the size hehe!

First time I've been here since they've changed their menu. It's never been my kind of place anyway, and now, it's really not. The pretentious atmosphere is unappealing, it's very loud, hard to talk to people sitting next to you let alone across the table. Their menu had a total of 4 vegetarian choices on it, no large plates were vegetarian. I tried the mac and cheese and shared with a friend, we both though it tasted like sour milk and had a vinegar smell. A friend sitting across the table smelled vinegar too. We sent that back. Then I tried the minted fried eggplant, it was good, the vinaigrette and tomato chutney were great. The eggplant was a little watery and too salty. The roasted mushroom salad was good, tried a friends mushroom. I should have only got that. But that's still not a meal. Would not go back.

First let me clarify: I give Alchemy a 4/5 on food, but a 1/5 on service. For the purpose of writing this review, I will give it a 1/5 as I was not driven to give this review because of the quality of the food, but because of the borderline illegal service we received. Me and a party of 10 others came here to have Sunday brunch a little before noon. The food was good, but the service was lacking. Every time food or drink was brought to our table, it was brought by a different server, despite our party being the largest of only three parties in the building (they were at most at 30% capacity). The menu does clearly state that 20% gratuity will be added for parties of 8 or more, which is understandable, but when we received our checks, gratuity was not on the bill. I made sure to let the rest of my party know so that we would not forget to properly tip (the service wasn't perfect, but it still warranted at least a 15% tip IMO). The waitress took a while to come back for payment, but once she did it took a FULL 30 MINUTES for her to bring us back our receipts. The only problem was, these receipts were not the same as the bills that were originally issued. These receipts had been reprinted to include 20% gratuity, and some even had additional items added to them, including a drink on my Fiancee's receipt which she did not order. We had to go to the bar and explain that we needed some of these incorrect items removed, and while I was there I explained that I did not appreciate being charged a full 20% more than what I was billed without at least being notified first. I made sure to clarify that I did not expect a refund or to be re-issued my check, I simply wanted to make my complaint known. What did this woman do though? She immediately refunded me and reissued my check without gratuity, EXACTLY AS I HAD REQUESTED HER NOT TO DO! Honestly, the food and drink here was very good, but I will never be returning as I simply cannot trust them to properly handle my money. If you bill me for $26.50, but charge me 31.80 YOU LIED TO ME! $5 may not be much, but this is still technically fraud. Worse yet, we were never informed that gratuity had been added since our bill was issued, so if we weren't as observant we could easily have been tricked into tipping TWICE! Long story short: The food was great, but the staff performed two actions on my credit card that I did not authorize, including an action that I specifically prohibited. I cannot trust them with my money, so they will not be receiving any more of it!

One of the worst experience dining out. First, we made reservations for 8 and they gave our table away. Then they tried to seat us at a table of 5. Water was left on the floor and one our guest slipped and fell. Our food took over a hour to get to the table once ordered. Management stated they were just to busy. However, a well managed restaurant should be able to handle a busy Mother's Day brunch

First impressions -- Alchemy does not understand that they are in Memphis and not, say, Chicago. Small plates, big prices, and a hoity toity attitude. At 5pm on a Saturday the place was not crowded, but our waiter took his time getting to our table. He was quite knowledgable about the menu, both food and drinks, but he disappeared again right when we were ready to pay our check and leave, which was quite frustrating. The food: small and fancy. I consider myself a decently cultured person, but I did not know what a lot of the things on the menu were, and everything generally sounded very complicated. I went for dessert and ordered what was described as a trio of cheesecakes. They were quite small, but spread out over a large plate, and the waiter did not tell me which was which, leaving me trying to remember what the menu said (chai tea, bitter chocolate with pretzels, and....uh....plain??). My friend ordered a (small) plate that consisted of some bread, cheese, salami, and olives. Really? I could have made that at home for half the price! The drinks: complicated, as I had expected, and for some reason the cocktail menu did not have prices on it, which I simply do not understand. My friend paid the bill, so I never did find out how much my mojito cost, but I'm guessing in the $10 range, given the rest of the prices. The last straw was when, having finally paid our check, we went outside to where we were parked in front of the restaurant. They had set up a valet service and left several cars idling, blocking in the cars that had parked on the street. A valet guy asked us if he should move the cars -- really?! No, we just want to sit in our car all night, we don't actually want to go anywhere. He then parked a valet car in the vacant spot -- I'm sure glad that person paid $7 plus tip to have their car parked right in front of the restaurant! Needless to say, I won't be going back. Only go here if you've got money, time, and a small appetite.

Alchemy is located in an area with several other restaurants. It was not difficult to find. It is a little outside of downtown Memphis though but easy to take a cab to and from downtown. The restaurant has an enormous bar and can be great spot to watch a game. The drinks were very good but I did not find the food to be anything special. My husband and I were in Memphis for the weekend and decided to try something outside of BBQ which is when we found Alchemy. We came here for dinner on a Sunday night. I would definitely recommend Alchemy as a spot to grab drinks but maybe not a place per se for a foodie.

Went last week- NOT KIDDING there was a fly floating in my over priced cocktail- if this wasn't unappetizing enough- I then found a big thick black hair in my slider. Disgusting. The waitress wasnt Very apologetic about the dead fly so i didnt bother to mention the hair. It seems a drink comp should have been in order. Won't be back! Overrated, and obviously low oversight on what goes into the food and drink.

I can already hear the gasps. "what?!?! You are giving Alchemy three stars?" Yes, I am. On a bad night, it would have deserved less. I have been to Alchemy twice. The first time, there was a two hour wait. I am not kidding. For a restaurant in Memphis. There was a two hour wait. It took 20 minutes to get a drink at the bar. It was not that tasty of a vodka tonic. Being the dedicated food addict I am, I had to see what the hype was about. When a best friend from out of town came to Memphis, there was no denying my making Alchemy a part of the plans. We arrived on Dec 30 at 730 expecting a three hour wait. Our surprise? It was a 20 minute wait. Just enough time to knock back a cocktail and check out the surroundings. The decor is very un-Memphis. It's nifty the way they made one space out of two. It's very loud though if you are honored to sit at a table up front. If you want a candlelight dinner for two, this is not your place. Overall, I give it a thumbs up for the scene. It's a nice change of pace for Memphis. It's a fun spot to go drink. I would absolutely like to sit at the bar and watch a Grizz game. The food is not really very good. Shock, I know, but someone had to say it. The menu is odd, to be honest. A lot of cheeses. Add some crab cakes. Add some hummus. Add some salad. Throw in a fish smothered in cream sauce. Add some wannabe Kobe beef from Texas. It's an interesting combination. Maybe I am missing the overall theme. It has happened before. So four stars for the bar. Two and a half for the food. The hummus at Whole Foods is better, to give you an idea. I will round it out at three stars. This place has potential, but it needs some work to in my opinion.

I have been back a few times in the past month after hearing they hired a new chef. Menu has been scaled down to a more reasonable size and consistency issues seem to have been worked through with this more focused approach. Food 4-stars Craft cocktails look great and are often tasty, but the ice to beverage ratio is off (so after 2-3 sips through the cocktail straw you are left with an empty glass of ice) ... which is a bummer. It's also not just me, on my last trip to Cooper-Young I met friends at a competing spot and a member of my party pointed out the value difference between restaurant beverages! Drinks 2.5 stars. Servers pretty friendly and seem interested in making sure you leave happy. Overall this is a fun spot for a group and if I had to choose I much prefer it over Local Midtown. Keep in mind that it can get a bit loud when at higher occupancies. Valet parking remains although I can't tell you the $$ as street parking is usually pretty easy to come by (if you can parallel park reasonably well and can walk up to a block then you're fine). Lot parking remains very territorial in the neighborhood.

I have an issue with places that only have tapas and not both tapas and actual meals, AND places that do not take reservations nor seat you until your entire party is there (it's rather pretentious, but whatever) This place is huge and busy. They have valet (which is funny being where it is). The bartenders are half/half nice. The food was okay. I always think that when you are a new restaurant in a busy place you need to be different, the only "unique" thing here is that they offer only small plates. They have a small wine selection and large specialty drinks/martini drink menu which is nice since most places do not. Sadly I didn't drink any but my friends did have this champagne and pear pure drink and a mojito martini drink that were pretty delicious. This is not a place I would crave to come back to but I would go if others wanted to go without objection. And maybe for the martini list when I am not on a diet.

Me and my sorority sisters decided to hang out here one Friday night. Loved the trendy, fresh feel of the place. The atmosphere was buzzing and the coctails were tasty. I would come again... this is a great place to mingle and meet with friends. The food was good...not spectacular, but good enough. Go for the vibe, the peeps, and the wine.

Cooper-Young's newest bar, Alchemy, has cocktails, small plates, and a I-can't-believe-this-is-Memphis atmosphere. Alchemy definitely looks cool. It takes up two storefronts (the ones previously occupied by Grace and Au Fond), and it's got a huge square bar, couches, bar tables and plenty of regular seating. It's warm and inviting, and it's got that soft, pretty lighting that makes everybody look good. Inside it was packed - all of the tables, most of the bar space and every inch of couch was taken up. Though they serve wine and beer, Alchemy seems like it's aiming to be a destination cocktail bar. I tried the Whiskey Smash from the small (for now) signature cocktail menu. It was a little like a fancified whiskey sour, a little bit sweet and a little bit strong. While you could easily make a meal out of the small plates on Alchemy's tapas-style menu, everything seems designed for sharing. The menu has plenty of options for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. I had already eaten dinner, so my date and I shared three of the cheese plates (I tried to take pictures, but though the lighting makes people look quite fetching, it's not so good for food photography). The bar just opened a few weeks ago, so it's been pretty busy every night. I tried to call for reservations, but they don't take them. The kitchen is open nightly until about 1 a.m.

Alchemy is a perfect place to begin a night of continued revelry! My husband and I met another couple here prior to our attending a concert at Minglewood for the N MS Allstars with Lightnin Malcolm. The atmosphere of Alchemy was high energy and youthful feeling. It reminded me of cool spots I used to go to while I lived in NYC. Variety of drinks and selection of liquors was outstanding. Our wait wasn't too delayed and the hostess sat us in an elevated room just off the big room. We liked this as it was a bit quieter but still fun! Our server was fantastic! She was attentive, helpful and really connected with us. The small plates were ALL divine but the very very best was the feature that night--the duck confit! OMG! It was so divine, my husband and I ordered a second serving! We will definitely go back to Alchemy the next time we visit Memphis.

I want to say right off the bat that the only thing stopping Alchemy from getting a five star review was the temperature. It was HOT in there, and just got hotter as the night went on. I was sitting by the thermostat, so I know exactly how warm it was. It was not an issue of a setting, but rather of the A/C not being equal to the task. On to the important stuff: the food. I had the duck spring rolls, the crispy wings, and the chorizo mac & cheese. The spring rolls were delicate and stuffed full of flavorful duck, and that dipping sauce was amazing. The wings were very meaty, and although I normally love a spicy sauce, the tangy sauce they were served with was delightful and had a zing on the tongue. I have to give that chorizo mac & cheese its own paragraph. It was, hands down, the best mac & cheese I have ever had. The flavor was complex, the cheese gooey, the texture perfect. I cannot recommend it enough! The atmosphere at Alchemy was young and hip, very trendy. I used the valet parking, which I know many yelpers look down on, but hey it was a hundred degrees outside. In conclusion, go to Alchemy. It is all small plates, the price is reasonable, and the flavors are amazing.

Why is this place suppose to be so fantastic. The plates are small, the price is through the roof and the bar tending staff is the worst. I have been to this establishment several times and each time it keeps getting worse. The bartenders have tried to overcharge me on several occasions. The food is mediocre at best and way over priced for the quality and creativity. I would stop by a cocktail, which are tasty provided you order the right ones, but leave before you order too many. Your bill will quickly be inflated by the $9-13 drinks.

  • Tanya T.

Fun place to grab drinks and socialize. I've also had dinner here and the food was good too. Loved the chorizo mac and cheese especially. The servings are small, so go for tapas or a very light meal. The bar is very crowded on weekends- definitely a place to see and be seen. Don't go for a quiet, romantic weekend date but rather for a fun night out with pals.

I love this place. They recently changed the menu though and have gone away from Tapas somewhat and are now offering some actual plates. I love the Tapas myself. The grilled cheese/tomato soup is super cheap and my favorite on a cold day. But overall, the menu is eclectic in taste and price range. Also, it's a great bar for late 20/early 30s who still like to go get a drink but avoid the younger crowd.

This was my first time trying out this place after almost going a few times. First off I can not say much about the food I just had a cheese plate and it was good. The other girls at the table had shrimp and grits, BBQ pizza, mushroom pancakes and hummus. Everyone at the table loved the food said it was all amazing. I am giving this place 2 stars based on customer service .....and slow service. They had no record of our reservation and the hostess was very rude until a manager got involved. It was a constant struggles to flag down a waiter and order a drink. When we did have a waiter they were very nice and tried but this place is extremely understaffed. I am not saying I would not go back but they sure did not make a great impression on my first trip.

On a late Wednesday evening I met a few friends for drinks. Parking was easy enough, drinks were good & food was decent. I initially ordered a blueberry martini but it was more raspberry so I ordered a couple lemon drops that were delish! I also ordered the duck spring rolls & they were pretty good but the duck was a little tough. Pretty good service & experience overall...I'll be back soon I'm sure. Very swanky place!

Alchemy is funky, loud, somewhat pricey, and awesome. The food is tapas style, the service is spot on, and the drinks are not your standard fare. This is a wonderful spot to take clients for a drink, or to avoid the rubes at chain restaurant bars. Skip the valet and park (legally) on the street - I, and other Cooper-Young residents, have no qualms about calling the police to extract your car from in front of our driveways. The area is safe and vibrant, and you'll enjoy walking through the neighborhood and seeing the other great places. Plus, after the wonderful food, your swollen middle could use some exercise. Please note, most of their drinks are handmade and/or made with fresh ingredients. You won't find neon colored margaritas or watery Jack and Cokes here. Step out of your shell, order some plates, and enjoy Alchemy!

Holy Cocktails Batman! I certainly felt a "BOOM" and "BAM" when I realized that each was $11. I should have known I was breaking the bank when no prices were listed on the menu. Every cocktail was made with the freshest ingredients, nice herbs, fresh fruit, and premium liquor. While I must say the drinks were good, it made me a little ill that my night cost me $40 and I only had 3 drinks. The bartender was nice but a little snooty. It's a neat place but it could be really loud when crowded. Not really sure I have to go back especially with Sweet Grass and Next Door just across the street.

I had dinner, cocktails and desserts here. We didn't try any of the entrees but all of the appetizers and share plates we ordered were fantastic. I highly recommend the shrimp and grits and the bread pudding! Definitely coming back next time I visit Memphis.

Great place to go if you want to feel like you're not in Memphis. We dined and drank. Go with a couple of people to share small plates with. About 2 per person is enough to get plenty full. Plates run about $7-10. We ordered 9 plates for 4 people and all left satisfied and pleased with our dining experience. They will stagger the plates in a progressive order appropriate for your palette. You must try the grilled cheese! Favorite one out of the 9. The pan-seared scallops were to die and the crab cakes were perfectly fresh and not over seasoned. The mixologist who created the drink menu is a genius. The Dancin' Jimmy was my favorite and Pearl White was the runner up. Not able to take reservations at the moment as Memphis's hottest bar, I suggest arriving no later than 7:00p on a Friday or Saturday if you would like a table without waiting. The service was not overwhelming but with the food and drink offering I'm confident the staff with eventually make a perfect merriment. Also, dress sharp as this is Memphis's most elite, best looking crowd I've ever seen.

Since hearing wonderful things about Alchemy from the time it opened, I finally had the opportunity to check it out for myself. Now, when people tell me how wonderful something is and how I HAVE to go, I normally build it up in my head so much that there's no way my expectations can be met. Not so with Alchemy. Alchemy is at Cooper/Young and contained it a rather large space. I was quite surprised at how large the place was. There are bar tables, a square bar in the middle towards the front of the restaurant and regular dining tables. The atmosphere is so contemporary chic. I absolutely loved it! Now, on to the goods...they have plenty of specialty drinks, of which, I tried none. They had a decent wine list and selection of beer to choose from - I happened to stick to wine on this visit. Also, they have a unique selection of tapas. I tried the cheese stuffed figs. They were like dessert! My friends had the brussel sprouts with bacon and the pancakes. All of our selections were divine. The couple sitting next to us ordered one of everything, I think. My friends and I were tempted to try some of their fare...it all looked so delicious. By 8pm, Alchemy was packed to the gills. Still though, the vibe is cool and upbeat. I'll definitely be back to Alchemy...a lot. A whole lot. I suggest you go, too! See you there, ok?

My wife and I both love Alchemy. The service is fast and the wait-staff is very friendly. You can get either a regular-sized entrée or a combination of any 3 entrees or desserts that you like. The prices are very reasonable also.

Wow - only great things to say about this place! I went with a coworker and two vendor reps visiting from out of town. I arrived ahead of my party, and the manager walked me around the restaurant and showed me all the different areas of the restaurant, and we ultimately landed in a cozy corner with a pair of curved, facing banquettes. Perfect area to talk and eat and drink! The atmosphere offers a little something for most everyone. There's regular table seating in both the front and the back of the restaurant (do you want to be "seen" or be cozy?); a number of tall bar tables best suited for small parties or cocktails only; there's an area by the kitchen where you can sit at a table or belly up to a bar that faces the open kitchen; and you can't miss the enormous, rectangle bar that takes up most of the middle of the restaurant! The sofa area where we sat was great because you're still in the mix of the restaurant, but you're not bumped right up to another table and forced to overhear whatever conversations are going on next to you. The cocktails are creative, and many of them are locally-themed - we tried three different ones, but the overwhelming favorite was the Dancin' Jimmy - these will be dangerous come summer! And did I mention the food? I'm always a little unsure the first time I visit a tapas restaurant, having been burned in the past at places that charge a lot, but use "tapas" as an excuse to be really skimpy. Not Alchemy - I was much more than pleasantly surprised at the portions! We each selected an item, and really probably would have been full after the first round, but because that first round was so good we had to go back for a second! Of the ten (yes, ten) different items we selected, I would have gladly ordered seconds. Lastly, the service was so, so good. Our server was Jason - he had a contagious smile, a friendly demeanor, provided spot-on recommendations, and expertly managed the balance of being present and giving us space. Alchemy doesn't take reservations (other than large groups), as most tapas restaurants by design encourage patrons to stick around, take their time, and enjoy each other's company. If it gets full, don't expect it to be a place where tables will turn over quickly. But the good news is that this place is HUGE, and the giant bar and open floor plan are conducive to hanging out and enjoying a delicious specialty cocktail or two if you do have to wait. Top scores all around - I can't wait to come back!

What a wonderful experience while visiting Memphis! We ordered the brussels, lamb ribs, lobster ravioli, fois gras, and Mac and cheese. Ended the night with the marquis and bread pudding. Caren and her staff showed us a great time while we sat at the kitchen bar viewing their skills. The dinner was delicious! If I return (since I'm from out of town), I'll stick to ordering dinner and passing on dessert. This crew has it mastered that really, I don't need a dessert!

Been there twice, enjoyed both times. Service was spotty on the 2nd visit, excellent however on the 1st. Drinks were very good, atmosphere excellent. You're not in Memphis anymore Dorothy. I had rock shrimp & mac/cheese, best mac & cheese I've ever had. Son had pork cheeks..., said it was fantastic. Definitely tell this is the place to go to be seen. Regardless, enjoyed it whether you're watching or being seen.

I've been a few times for drinks and had a good time (which is why I was "nice" with the 2 stars). However, last weekend was THE WORST experience in a restaurant ever! The staff was incredibly rude and unprofessional. I was with a semi-large group and we tried it out for dinner. The server didn't seem to know what he was doing. My Bloody Mary was even a let down. Not to mention, we had to ask several times for food that we had already ordered. The food was mediocre for the ridiculous price. I had the Brussel sprouts and mac n' cheese. The sprouts weren't even cooked. The mac n' cheese was yummy, but not worth $12. I was not impressed by the food or staff. I don't mind when 20% is automatically added for tip - if the service warrants it - but they definitely did not deserve that much last weekend!

This is swanky place that you don't go to if you are looking to satisfy a big appetite! The atmosphere is very cool--a unique addition to midtown. The small plates are...small but tasty. Our faves were the mushroom pancakes, artichoke salad, Mac and cheese, and scallops. Not worth the money--the hummus (bland) and fish tacos (boring). Good cocktails and drink selection. Overall a fun place to go and enjoy a few nibbles!

Originally this felt like a place to "see and be seen" but it's evolved into a nice bar with great bartenders and really good food. I can't get enough of the grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup - an adult take on a kid's favorite. If you've only gone to Alchemy to drink, give the menu a try - you'll be pleased!

    (4)
  • Jen C.

I love the drinks at Alchemy. The liquor selection is fantastic, with a list of spirits spanning several pages. The bartenders are experienced, efficient and skilled. The atmosphere is beautiful -- the decor is impeccable. I've heard mixed opinions about the food, but I just can't stick around long enough to try it. Because I just cannot handle the noise. If I'm going out to a place with no deejay, no band, and for heaven's sake, NO KARAOKE I would like some conversation with my cocktails. But whenever my husband and I go to Alchemy I feel like I have to yell at him even though he's sitting six inches away. Which doesn't make for a comfortable, relaxing environment. I know crowded bars get loud. But it's loud even when it's not crowded. And I don't go out to yell at my husband -- I can do that at home. There are ways to improve the acoustics of a space like Alchemy. I hope the owners do something about it soon, because the noise is the only thing keeping me from becoming a regular.

Let me start off by saying the only reason I gave this place two stars was because I haven't yet tasted the food - could be amazing, for all i know. My husband and I were very excited to check out Alchemy, given the mostly favorable reviews on Yelp and the list of craft cocktails posted on the website. We were seated immediately at about 10 pm on a Friday night, which was a definite plus. Unfortunately, this perk was immediately cancelled out when a server nearly broke my arm by smashing it in between the patio door and my chair, and then later when a different server spilled water all over my table, and then AGAIN later when our server screamed our tab across the patio when we asked for the check. Who is training these servers??? Absolutely TERRIBLE service. Regarding the cocktails - meh, I've had a lot better. Nothing on the craft menu appeared even remotely tart/citrus/clean flavored - even the Two-One-Two I ordered (Grapefruit juice, tequila, and Aperol) was sickeningly sweet. My husband's Vincent's Ruin (Bulleit Bourbon, Elder Flower, Absinthe, Lemon and Orange Bitters) was VERY unbalanced - way too much bitter flavor. We would have asked the server for a remake, but he never came back to check on us after he dropped our drinks off - in fact, he wasn't even the server who dropped the drinks off in the first place. The next time we saw him after we received our drinks was about 30 minutes later when he screamed "it's 22.00" across the porch. Sigh. Again, we didn't eat the food, so we can't comment on that. We are also VERY excited to sample some of the Bourbon menu, but only if given the opportunity to ask questions and get recommendations from servers. Seriously, TRAIN YOUR SERVERS.

I tried Alchemy with a girlfriend this weekend. I love the vibe and the atmosphere at this place. My friend was running late, but I did not feel awkward at all while I was alone waiting for her. There was a nice size crowd this Saturday night, but it was not super packed- just right. I had a glass of Champaign, which was very fresh (corked popped for me there at my table). For my entre I had the steak and potatoes (not what it is called on the menu lol) It was very delicious! My friend had the "fish of the day" which was mahi mahi. She enjoyed her dish as well. I will offer this caveat, If you have a big appetite, don't come hungry or you will be disappointed. Even though our entre came from the section titled "Bigger Plates" they were rather small. No doggie bags here. As my friend and I chatted I ordered a cocktail "Keep Calm Colins On" which was some minty-cucumber drink. I will definitely be back. The loungy area are would be great for a girls night out.

There are many a reasons I have faith for Alchemy. Below they are listed: 1.) The All-Star Cast: Nothing but industry professionals grace the cast and crew of Alchemy. Karen Roth, the head chef at Erling Jensen runs the kitchen and creates the recipes. Bert Smythe and John Littlefield, the owners of McEwen's, are the guys who own this place as well. Ben McLean, who has been in the industry for years and most recently a manager at Soul Fish, is now the manager here. The head bartender Dave Carlisle has spent 13 years bartending for Huey's. Not to mention, all of the servers have not only been in the industry for years, but have come from well-established businesses. All of these roles can make or break a place, and Alchemy seems to have the brains and business behind it. 2.) The Atmosphere: The atmosphere at Alchemy is romantic and a tad upscale, but it still has a relaxed comfortable feel. I have been several restaurants who have tried to master this, but it always comes out either tacky or just plain confusing. Alchemy masters it. You have several options when visiting Alchemy. You can take a seat at the ridiculously large bar. It is seriously a giant square. You have four sides. From here you can watch TV or enjoy one of their signature drinks, all inspired by mixologists brought in from New York. If you do not want to sit at the bar, you can relax in one of these cozy sofa enclaves. These are great for an intimate dinner or drinks with friends. If you want to see the kitchen in action, hang out in the chef's area. You can sit at a bar or table and watch the kitchen in action. You also have options to sit at an actual table or reserve the back room for parties. The options are endless, so pick your fancy. 3.) The Drinks: This particular night, we only had Ghost River and wine to choose from, so I am excited to come back when they start making their signature drinks. However, I was incredibly impressed by their draft beer selection. I was giddy over the choices. Just a few include all 3 Ghost River beers, Yazoo, and New Belgium Seasonal. No Budweiser or Miller Lite here people. 4.) The Food: Now here is what I am excited about. The food was overall fantastic. I chose to sit at the bar, where I saw some familiar faces. We all ended splitting a whole bunch of plates, so we could try as much as possible. Alchemy does not have a full menu. They instead have small plates, and a lot of them. Yes, you have about 40 different tapas to choose from. They are all unique to themselves, which I loved. You did not see many repeated ingredients, so each entree was designed just for itself instead of what they just had laying around already. It is also a great idea, because there is something for everyone to try. How Karen Roth comes up with these flavor combinations is beyond me, but man is she a genius at her craft. I left that place feeling fat, full, and happy. So happy in fact, that I wish I could have laid down on the park bench right outside and not moved. We all stuffed ourselves, but it was totally worth it. Alchemy had me appreciating dishes I normally shy away from. I did not have one bad dish while there. Everything was fantastic.

seems a little confused about what the restaurant wants to be. do you want to be a sports bar or do you want to be a restaurant? if the latter, lose the tvs. they have no purpose in the kind of restaurant environment you're trying to create. the decor is bizarre and it feels like they ran out of money towards the end and just threw up whatever they could afford on the walls, no marriage of colors and ideas throughout any of the decor the service was flighty as best; we received little attention from our server and our meals (a group of 6 ppl) came scattered throughout the 2+ hours we waited for them. i understand that tapas bars present food in a timed series, but this is not the experience we had here. three people ordered the same dish, two came out together, one came out almost 90 minutes later. i think the staff (kitchen & wait) was not prepared for the kind of volume that they were experiencing the food is not expensive, which is a plus, but its also not that great. the only thing i would consider ordering again from the six or seven menu items i tried was the rack of lamb. the lamb was charred and cooked perfectly. everything else was so-so. From what I can recall, the mac and cheese was bland, the oysters had far too much breading on them, the scallops were ok, crabcakes were meh. it gets 3 stars from me because its in memphis. if it was in any other metropolitan city, it would get 1-2.

Alchemy, in the kind of transformative move its name implies, has taken over two former very good Cooper-Young eateries (Grace and Au Fond du Table) and created culinary magic. The space is extensive and airy, but its decor and muted lighting create a sense of intimacy, despite the very "live" rooms. The bar has an extensive and original cocktail list as well as old stalwarts and good wine and beer selections. But the food menu is all: interesting and creative, with small plates and locally-sourced food. Some favorites are the shrimp and grits and the tender Akaushi beef. Everything we have tried on several visits is very satisfying: the only thing that fell with a thud was the chipotle fish taco selection, with its tough fish and timid sauce. Maybe it will be better next time. Only drawbacks: very noisy and crowded, especially on week ends (no reservations); valet parking is expensive ($7.00!) But these are minor distractions: hope this will become, like Tsunami, a Memphis favorite.
