I'm not sure if the other poster was there on a bad day or if they ended up getting new sushi chefs but, My wife, my brother, sister in law, and I all went to Kanpai because I had heard good things about it. I have eaten sushi in Milwaukee, Chicago, Tokyo, London, Toronto, L.A., Seattle, Miami, and of course in Tennessee. I love the spicy tuna roll if it is done well and I can honestly say, at least when we went there. That it was the best spicy tuna roll I have ever had. This place also had very good miso soup and I like to think that you can tell the quality of all the food in a sushi place by the miso. If it is bad, the food nearly all of the time will be as well. This place has the best Miso I've had in Tennessee for sure. My wife had the eel and avacado and she thought it was great. We both have nothing but positive things to say about the food. The people behind us that kept pushing my seat were a bit annoying but, the staff and food were aces!

I like Kanpai's food and service. The thing that makes it difficult for me to give them more than three stars is that they do not accommodate children well. They do not have a children's menu. Paying adult menu prices for food for toddlers and preschool aged children feels ridiculous to me. Also of note, the last time we went to Kanpai, they did not have high chairs. We basically had to leave. I have been back since without my children, but I am not sure I can justify going without any accommodation on their part for customers with kids.

Awful experience. Service was incredibly slow. We had to wait a very long time for our soups and salads. Main course took forever to come out, and my husbands came out before mine. Overall quality was very underwhelming and I will not be returning.

Sushi Restaurant Prices: Gas Stations Sushi Quality. Avoid this place, I've eaten here twice now and neither time has the sushi been remotely worth it. Tasteless, dish-spongy ingredients and absent-minded wait staff make for a terrible experience. Make the drive to north Jackson if you're craving sushi.

Not a good place if you're wanting sushi. The seaweed is VERY chewy and so is the rice. The eel sauce has a weird taste too. The people there seem very nice (which is why I gave them 2 stars instead of 1). Don't know if I will give the "other" items on the menu a try.
