We our recent trip to Nashville and Bowling Green my wife and I stopped here for lunch solely based on the DDD episode we saw prior. On our trip we went out of our way to eat at only DDD places and it was a great adventure. This place was great. The hummus was the best I'd ever had and the bread that gave us to put the hummus on was heavenly. Soft, chewy and just great tasting. We split the kabobs and they too were great. BUT a word of caution. If they ask you if you want it hot or spicy know that what you will get will be EXTREMELY hot and spicy. I loved it, but could see others being surprised. If we're ever in that area again we would definitely come back!!

This was a great find. If not for Yelp, would never have known it existed. Food was, in general very good. The cheese plate appetizer was outstanding and our meals were well presented, tasted good and worth the price. Very small restaurant - take seat, select from menu, order at counter, receive bill at counter, take seat, be served! I am an iced tea drinker and although they had iced tea, it was the Mediterranean version with a strong taste of herbs - acceptable but not my cup of tea!!! It would have been a 5 start except for the fact that the chicken in my dinner was rather dry - not moist as it should have been. Other than that, we would definitely return if we get back to the Nashville area some time.

This place is AWESOME. Amazing food! Try the Mediterranean tea. They close in b/t lunch and dinner, which is a downfall but you won't be disappointed with the food. Featured on Food Networks Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives!

Love this restaurant!! We are here several times a month!! Food is amazing and staff is exceptional. Wish Hendersonville had more great places to eat like this one that serve really good hand crafted, fresh food. So sick of chain restaurants! Love Cafe Rakka!!!

Consistently amazing EVERY TIME. Don't bother going to any other restaurant in the area. Food is unbelievably fresh and tasty. They use the perfect blend of spices the smells are divine. Cheese baklava is rare, but I always ask in hopes they'll make it more often :) I wish they'd open a location in downtown Nashville, but until then, I'm happy to drive all the way out there even when I'm starving.

I've been coming here since they first opened a few years ago. I've only had a few items here (why mess with what works?), but based on what I have had I'm confident that everything there is good. The hummus is the best I've had anywhere and I love the Shawermah on the Sajj. Tender beef with tons of flavor. The only negative thing I have to say is that I think the prices are a little high when you take in to account the atmosphere (very casual).

Unfortunately I got here a few days after an episode of Diners Driver-ins and Dives had aired about it, so it was popular. As I've been ina very hipster mood this week, and had been watching an episode of the I.T. Crowd recently, I was of the opinion going in that if anyone else likes it it's probably crap. I was wrong. Not that I really was expecting to be right, but it was the feeling of the day going in. Our party was to meet at 6pm, for some reason wires got crossed and 4 of us ended up at the place at about 5, which was good because had we not secured seating at that moment for the group main which was arriving at 6 we would never had been seated. There were people there for hours waiting for seats starting at about 5:50 on. We'd been ordering appetizers, drinks (non-alcoholic, they has no booze), and generally running up a pre-meal tab. The party showed up by 6, we shuffled our 3 tables about a bit (they have 5 tables for outside, each table seats 2 comfortably, we had 3 at each) and we ordered our meals (probably by about 6:10) We had a little problem getting refills, artificial sweeteners, water, and general liquids in in a timely fashion, but there wa a line 8 deep outside the door so I was not really stressing it. I ordered the vegetarian sampler (which i believe was around $14) and other people ordered a variety of things which were generally about a buck or two more. I also had their Turkish coffee, which was extremely good, but did not quite remind me of any I've had before (do not get me wrong, I liked this coffee much better) - so a purist may either love it or say it's crap, I don't know, it was damned good coffee. Their hummus appetizer was pretty good. There was not enough pita to scoop up the hummus so we had to order 2 more orders (at additional cost) of pita to sop it up. We had been piling it pretty thick, so I don't think it's because we were going light on it. I think they just don't serve enough pita for the thing. Their baba ganoush - none of us particularly liked. I think this batch may have been burned. To me it tasted like charred marshmallow, one of our friends said it tasted a bit like bleh, it was not inedible, just seemed to be off... I would try it again as I think it was a cooking error. The veggie sampler plate arrived about an hour and a half after I ordered it. At this point I was starving. It also was roughly half the mass of anything else anyone had ordered and I finished it in just about 3 minutes. I'd say avoid this... it's like a stripper - it tells you it's interested in you and then just leaves when the money runs out. There was way too little substantive food on the veggie sampler plate. Another person in the group got the fallafle plate, it towered over my puny plate, she had so much fallafle and hummus she shared and I managed to fill up. I had been given two tiny little tastes of heavenly fallafle on the teaser plate I had. She gave me a couple of mammoth bits of yummy and i was happier. The service - it was slow but extremely good. At several points the waitress showed up during a silly bit of conversation and jumped right in. knowing the exact point to pick up with the comment on the unlaiden airspeed velocity of an African Swallow seemed to be a big hit with some of us, other times she came out and commented on - you know, it's pretty hard to describe because it sounds like she was butting in, but the waitress was really good with a band of geeks, and straights. So, service - slow, but great. I'll most likely go again hen I am out that way, going to wait a bit till the Diners Drive ins and Dives crowd forgets it a bit though...

My husband and I have been wanting to give Cafe Rakka a try for months. We finally were able to have a lunch date, and give it a go. It's not a private booth kind of restaurant, it's open, and you sit very close to your neighbors. When being seated our server made us aware that we were to read over the menu at the table, than order at the counter. A little different than usual, but still okay. I can see where it could be frustrating if it was busy, because it would get crowded in a hurry. We were pleasantly surprised by their cucumber water. It was fresh, and crisp. It went amazingly well with the food. I ordered the Chicken on the Sajj, ordered it spicy, and it did not disappoint! What a flavor explosion in my mouth! Amazing is all I can say. I loved it. My husband ordered the Shawermah on the Sajj, also spicy, and he was quiet for most of his meal. So, it was also a home run. He even admitted to thinking about the food after we left, craving more. Our servers were attentive. We never needed to ask for anything. They were on par the entire time, and when we walked in it was busy! They have lunch portions, that won't break the bank, and the food isn't heavy. It's a nice change of pace around here. I can't wait to go back. caferakka.com/menu.html

Definately bring a friend. This is a place to share and be merry. My wife and I struggled to find cuisine that was worth the visit in the Nashville area. If you are searching for anything other than comfort food you will have to look very hard. This place is worth every penny. We have taken all our family members there when they visit and come when we are looking for something special. Featured on Diners, Drive-in, and Dives this place has upheld the quality and sets the bar for unique.

I've been here several times over a few years, and they always serve consistently good healthy food. The hummus is great and the entrees are too. I usually find that large servings equal mediocre food, but that isn't the case here.

Great spot for lunch, the food was great and the staff is friendly! Hummas is really good and awesome salad special, just right for lunch. Pretty cool having a local triple D spot right here in Hendersonville.

We were looking for somewhere to go on a Saturday night that we didn't have to wait for an hour to sit down. We go to Hendersonville often and we as everyone else saw this on Diners, Drive-in and Dives. We decided to try it. It was definately busy, but we were seated right away. It is a very small restaurant. We ordered the hummus bar for the app and it was so good. I have never been able to get my husband to eat hummus at home and he absolutely loved it. We got the spicy cilantro and garlic flavors. The pita bread was warm and so fresh. I had the Pomegrante Tea and my husband had the Mediterranean and they both had a refreshingly different "kick" to it. I ordered the falafel and was not dissapointed. I ordered a side of rice, which was a mistake, because the falafel came on pita bread and salad and that was more than enough. I didnt touch the rice and took half the falafel home with me. (I had to save room for the baklava!) My husband ordered the Kabob Halebi, he said it was very good. (We were originally wanting to go somewhere he could get a steak and I asked if this satisfied his meat craving and he said YES!) All in all its a new fav for us. The hummus bar itself is enough reason to go!

Stopped in late on a Friday night and was a little disappointed in the limited and basic vegetarian options. I was hoping there would be some different options so we could feel more like we were having an entree rather than an assortment of appetizers. We shared the platter that consisted of Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, Falafel and Tabbouleh. There were only two falafel on the platter so we got two additional falafel off the appetizer menu. They were fresh tasting but everything was a little overpowered with a lemon and parsley taste that took over any other flavor. The best thing we tried was the Baba Ghanoush which was sprinkled with pomegranate seeds that added something extra. I had no complaints and wouldn't be opposed to going again if in the area, but I don't know that I would make a special trip. As usual, maybe things would different if I ate meat.

The food is fabulous! Great place to take someone, if you're not in a hurry. Service is slow and the place is small but totally worth the wait. Definitely try all the courses including the coffee or tea and the dessert. Fresh ingredients with lots of flavor!

Great Food but mixed feelings about the atmosphere and service. Order from the counter but someone brings to your table. They seem somewhat uninspired and tired... Hot drinks served in take away cups... But cost is not take away prices. Inconsistent experiences with the help keeps me from giving a great score... Even if the food is quite good.

As with many other reviewers, my husband and I decided to try Cafe Rakka after seeing it on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Overall, our visits have been very positive. The menu is small, but the food is unique and very flavorful. I haven't seen many of the dishes anywhere else. The dining room is very small, so I recommend going at non-peak times. Service has been a little slow on our visits, but the staff has always been friendly. I'm willing to wait for great food that I know is being prepared to order. I highly recommend the appetizer platter that comes with greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, and homemade farmer's cheese all drizzled with olive oil. The farmer's cheese is delicious and not like anything else I've tasted. The filet mignon kebobs cooked on the salt block were quite good, but be aware if you go later in the day that they do seem to sometimes run out of the specials. We had to wait and try this on our second visit, and even then we got the last portion available that day. The chicken tikka masala is also superb and very unique. My last recommendation is the hummus bar. The hummus itself is very good and you get to choose two toppings. The roasted onions and roasted garlic cloves are my favorites.

Fantastic Mediterranean spot. Hole in the wall, Middle Eastern meets Greek. We all left bursting out of our seams.

Great food and incredible tea. The Wife and I loved the place. I had a lamb dish in a tomato based sauce(tikka masala I believe) and it was like nothing else. The falafel was also great. I need an excuse to go back to Nashville now.

Bottom line, the food rocks and the service sucks. Easily a 5 star cafe if the waitstaff got their act together. We walked in and there were 2 people waiting, some people walked in behind us. No one acknowledged our existence. We waited a fair amount of time then I walked to the counter and asked if we should seat ourselves or wait. The braindead bimbo at the counter looked at me like I had just teleported in from outer space. I asked again. She said, "Well I guess you can find a seat wherever you want." So we did. The people in front of us and behind us in line got the message from me since no one bothered to come to the front. They just stood there anyway. 10-15 minutes later after we had put in our drink orders they were helped. We ordered our food and that was the last time we saw our waitress. We had to go to the counter to request someone get our bill. My water had been dry 20 minutes or so. Service is a disaster. Food on the other hand was excellent! Amazingly fresh, aromatic, flavorful. HUGE portions for the price. I had leftovers that I couldn't wait to eat the next day! I was delighted and would have ordered more to go if we had been able to get service. The food is good enough I would be back, I would just be more aggressive with getting my needs taken care of with the waitstaff.

I have found a gem amongst the grossest of chains on the north side. The portions are large so share! Every time I have eaten at Rakka the food is fresh and hot and so tasty. They also offer this amazing herbal/cucumber water that may sound strange but is incredibly refreshing. The chef takes pride in his creations so that's another bonus. Go there.

Cafe Rakka is a bit out of the way for most Nashvillians but well worth the drive to Hendersonville if you enjoy Mediterranean type food. The selections were limited but all extremely good. The hummus was a 10 out of 10. We added roasted garlic, cilantro, nuts and a very hot sauce that kicked into high gear. The lamb biryani was also an excellent dish. The teas are spectacular and plentiful. The space itself is very small so if you don't mind bumping elbows (literally) with your neighbor, you'll be fine. There's no place to wait for a table inside and it was a common occurrence to hear the servers ask a waiting customer to wait outside or in their car and they'd call their cell phone when a table was ready.

Great food but horrible inconsistent service. The care taken to create the dishes is evident both in the time it takes to receive it but more importantly the taste. Excellent food. Service is among the worst I have been exposed to...so bad it detracts from the excellent food. Should allow BYOB.

It seems to keep changing Food great, service sucks. Will try ordering ahead... a day Food is good. Been here 3 times; first was a 5, second was 1 due to service, and this trip was 3 (again due to service or lack of it). I'll be back for the food that I order ahead.

I feel a little guilty going here after seeing it on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives." I mean, that's not how Foodie Finds get found, right? Well, we had to go up to Hendersonville anyway and figured we would swing wide and stop here for dinner. Beverages were good. Cucumber water tastes better than tap, certainly, and their sweet iced tea, which I think was seasoned with cardamom--yum!--was very good. Service was slow, but I think that's because there was only one person in the kitchen, Chef Rakka himself. The waitstaff is very friendly, and I overheard one of the waitresses patiently explaining the menu to another table. For dinner, Husband ordered Chicken on the Sajj and that was genuinely delicious. I got one bite to try it and he cleared his plate otherwise. High praise! I ordered Shrimp Jalfrezi which was on the specials board. It was quite tasty, but when I realized the shrimp were not deveined, I found that pretty unappetizing. Veggies (onions, tomatoes, capers) and rice were tasty and well-prepared, though, and the side salad was good. Both plates were really substantial. A nice little spot and worth a stop if you're in the area. Come hungry, but prepare for a wait. Also steer clear of shrimp-related dishes.

Went here after seeing it on diners, drive ins and dives. And it was good, but not great. I've eaten at better Mediterranean food, but maybe its because I'm from the bay area and spoiled with different cuisines. The food was good, don't get me wrong and it may be one of the few Mediterranean places in the area, I found it to be good flavor, but nothing spectacular.

  • David S.

Given its popularity, the space is a little small. I presume they might re-locate to a large space when their lease expires, but all this means is its better to come during off-peak hours. Anyhow, the primary reason I'm giving this place 5 stars is the soft smoky flavor of the baba ghanoush. It left a lasting impression on my taste buds that I can still recollect some 2,000 miles away.

    (5)
  • Mell F.

Lunch here today. My first taste of Baba Ghanoush. It was fresh and good. Not sure I could eat a lot of it at one sitting, but I enjoyed it. I got the Shawermah (marinated beef) on the Sajj as my entree. Really good flavor here and makes me want to return to experience more dishes. Nice portion size. You can just tell that these people care about the food they're serving. Chef Rakka stopped by our table to ask how everything was. Nice touch. Service was pretty good, but I think they made my fiance's dish medium spicy and mine regular instead of the other way around. Honest mistake. No biggie. I did have to ask for a water refill each of 3 I was empty. I guess that's what I get for being cheap.

It is hard to eat at other restaurants in the area after eating at Cafe Rakka. Chef Rakka prepares delicious dishes that not only have a ton of flavor but are also fresh. The hummus is amazing. For dinner, Chicken on the Sajj is awesome. Get it spicy for sure. The restaurant is clean and the service is excellent. By far one of the best restaurants in the Nashville area.

I stop in here quite a bit because I buy a lot of red tea. Their red tea is amazing. We usually buy it there by the gallon. The health benefits from this tea are great. My wife calls it "our medicine". As usually I stopped in there to get some tea and who walks in and is standing right behind me? Country music icon Ricky Skaggs. The most friendly guy you will ever met. He started telling us about when Guy Fieri came there for Dinners, Drive-in's, and Dives. He said that guy wouldn't leave because he just loved the food there and that he really just like hanging out with Chef Rakka.

This is not an impressive place when It comes to price vs quantity. A substantial part of food has the plate filled with lettuce and not real food. Not impressive serving. Have to order up front. Menu is pretty impressive . Limited stuff on the menu. Stuff on there sounded like Indian to me. Would not make it there next time.

    (1)
  • James J.

We went here as part of a quest to eat different things now and then, and a good friend had recommended it. I hear Guy Fieri did a show here, but i won't hold that against them. The cafe is small, with maybe only 10 tables, but there was a light crowd when we went early on a Friday night. We ordered the Hummus bar with falafel and roasted garlic as an appetizer. The garlic came in big roasted cloves which were tasty but seemed just the slightest bit undercooked. Besides that, the hummus was excellent, with a dash of yogurt sauce thrown in. For entrees, we had the chicken tikka masala and the shrimp jalfrezi. For a Mediterranean restaurant, half the menu was distinctly Indian. One entree would have been fine. Both were very large, complete with side salads. The tikka masala was very good, with an undercurrent of spiciness and big chunks of whole cinnamon in the sauce. The shrimp was less successful, not bad, just not distinctive. Given the size of the entrees, I'd recommend just getting one entree and an appetizer on a return visit. Will definitely return to try the Turkish coffee and the baklava.

We found this place after watching Guy Fieri on Foodnetwork diners dine ins an drives. We recently went an tried the steak kabobs. Theeee best. The salad is great, the yogurt sauce, rice an homemade pitas. i always get the red tea also. They only announce the kabobs on Facebook so you have to catch him when he makes it. We're still waiting to taste the filet kabobs cooked on the salt block.absolutely love this place.

  • Chris J.

The Chicken Tika Massala was superb! So based on that alone, I'm giving Cafe Rakka five stars, as it was better than most indian restaurants that serve that dish. A few people on yelp are complaining about the service, although this place really more about the food. Service is friendly, so just enjoy.

don't let the building fool you! it's cozy inside and the food is legit, fresh and delicious!! we had the hummus, sampler with baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, falafel and a sun dried tomato hummus like dish that was great. the most important part was that you could clearly tell everything was as fresh as could be. HIGHLY recommended. please go!! don't let this place go out of business!! if I had a critique it would be the pistachio baklava had a lil too much cinnamon than I'd prefer. oh yes, and no dolmas :( but everything was so fresh and delicious that it's not a problem. I'll be back soon.

Excellent Mediterranean cuisine. More importantly everything is made in house. Several dishes are hard to find on other menus. You go up to the register to order and then they bring the meal to your table. You do pay a little more for the excellent food. Meals are filling.

everything is good all the time, everytime!!! PERIOD. You really can't order anything bad here. The falafel sandwich for lunch amazing.... The Syrian muhammara is supper yummy if you don't also order their amazing hummus! Salads are always fresh and BIG! House cucumber water very satisfying. Keep going until you've tried everything!! It's all good!!

Normally one of our favorite restaurants. Food has always been outstanding, however, this time not so good. This occurred today, 7/31/15, 5pm. The service was not worth paying for. It took 15 minutes, while we stood at the counter waiting for one of the 3 young men to ask if they could help, then they got the order wrong once when the food was served, then I had to go in from the patio to get water 15 minutes after meal was served. We asked for water when the meal was served and we were almost finished before deciding to get ourselves. Really poor service, needs improvements and likely lost a customer. We hope this changes. We will not return until change occurs.

The only reason this restaurant is getting 2 stars instead of 1 is that the "Muhammara". This was the best I have ever eaten in my life. Terrible shawarma, so pricey, no service, . This was the worst shawarma ever. They have chosen the worst part of the sinewy beef which was probably the leftover of everything from the butcher shop. It was not possible to digest. It was like plastic not a meat. Rice was obviously not fresh and I'm a cook and I can tell from the first bite if something is from today or yesterday. It was so crunchy and tomatoes smelled like they sat outside for more than 6 hours. Salad and dressing was very good though but that can not make you full and it's not my first priority. I paid $26.20 for an appitizer and an entree. I did not drink anything other than water. This quality of food can not be at this price. If you want the best shawarma in town, go to Newroz Market on Nolensville Pike. You can get yourself full with spending $3.99 on a generous sandwich and don't forget this is really the best shawarma in town. There was 3 servers(or I must say cashiers), and they were so slow. These people were very very nice and great attitude but they are not servers except for Lisa. They are probably high school students and they do not know anything about being server. They took the money at the cash register while ordering, brought my food, and they probably took dirty dishes after I left. No communication, nothing asked during the meal. I went to the register area to ask for some bread. There is a concept indecisiveness in this restaurant. If they want to serve like Panera Bread that's fine by me, then do not put a TIP spot on your receipts. Even though there were 3 people and there were only 6-8 tables, I did not deserve to wait 30 minutes on food and never asked for anything. I won't be coming back here for dinner, maybe on lunch to try some other menu items and pickup some Muhammara.

I got the shawermah and my wife got the falafel sandwich. Everything was delicious, including the hummus appetizer! They infuse their ice water with cucumber which sounds weird but it is actually really good. Not too expensive, definitely a great value. Strongly recommended.

I live in Kansas. I have relatives in Florida. I build Cafe Rakka into the travel plan every time, both coming and going. I am stingy with 5-star reviews, but this awesome chef makes everything in-house from scratch, has the best hummus and falafel I have ever had anywhere, and brews a pomegranate-hibiscus tea that is outstanding. Can't say enough good things. I would go broke eating here if I lived within 50 miles of Henderson, TN.

Very fresh! Dishes are very large and can easily feed two. The falafel is excellent and the chicken tikka masala is wonderful. The baklava is ok but nothing to write home about.

Disclaimer: I haven't actually been here! I'm giving this review based on leftovers my wife just brought me back from this place. She brought me back a sampler of hummus, taboule salad and baba ghanoush and a little bit of an entree she had called Chicken on the Sajj. My-oh-my that stuff was delicious. I actually wasn't a big fan of their baba ghanoush, but it wasn't bad. Just don't think I liked their interpretation and style of it. The hummus and taboule was fantastic though. The Chicken on the Sajj was absolutely incredible though. Remember, I'm having this as a little bit of leftovers brought back in a styrofoam container. I'm imagining eating it freshly as it's served to your table will add a few more points to the enjoyment factor and scale. So, the next question is just how long it will take my wife and I to go back together in person and introduce the kids to some delicious Mediterranean cuisine.

In town for business from Salem Oregon. Great hole in the wall! Lamb Yakney was so flavorful! I ordered it spicy and it had a nice kick to it. Started off with Jalapeño Hummus. Had a roasted Jalapeño right in the middle of it. Best hummus I've had. The pomegranate Tea is exceptional. Every item I had was full of flavor and was prepared with fresh ingredients. I wish I had room for dessert. 2 thumbs up!!

Every time I have eaten at Rakka's I leave in a good mood and feeling healthy. The chef is passionate about his food and heritage, and that passion is palpable in every bite. All of the ingredients used at Rakka's are deliberately chosen. Hendersonville is lucky to have such a restaurant in the community. Highly recommend this place for anyone who isn't afraid of flavor.

Rakka is my favorite restaurant in Hendersonville. Everything on the menu is amazing and you can't go wrong. Also ask about the daily specials when you order. One of my favorites is the Moussaka. It's a fairly small staff and everyone is friendly. It's a small building which brings a cozy atmosphere and there's a nice patio out front if it's nice outside. Most of the times I've been, I've been able to find a table right away but there is an occasional wait. Portion sizes are pretty large. We almost always come back with leftovers. You could consider sharing a plate, especially for a light eater. Highly recommend!

So delicious! We live in Los Angeles so we are familiar with good Mediterranean food, and this place was probably one of the BEST mediterranean restaurants I've ever been to. We had the Veggie Platter, and a Salmon dish and they were just exceptional. Both of them. Can't wait to go back next time we're in town!

Ok. So Hendersonville is a drive for most in the Nashville area, but this place is worth it. It's a small little restaurant with great food, amazing sweet tea and service that makes you happy to eat out and tip.

This is possibly my favorite restaurant ever. I wish it wasn't 14 hours away! While on a road trip from New York to Oklahoma, my friend and I were looking for great food. We tend to enjoy Mediterranean food, and the menu looked fabulous so this was where we decided to go while in Nashville. Cafe Rakka was fairly easy to find even on a rainy December night. We arrived around 6pm on a Saturday night after Christmas. It was busy, but there were still a few places left to sit. When you go in, you can sit first, but you'll have to order at the counter. We decided on a hummus bar to start and got it with olives and extra pita. It was delicious. Homemade hummus is the best! I loved the flavor and texture. The olives were good, though I wasn't a fan of the darker ones. For my main dish I ordered the Lamb Briyani. An expensive dish, it was plentiful. There was a good amount of lamb, naan, and rice. The salad with dressing was delicious. It was spicy, but not overly. You could taste each of the flavors distinctly. I ordered a sweet Mediterranean Tea, and it was quite possibly the best tea I've had. Ever. I could taste clove and a number of other spices that made for a perfect chai. The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy. It was the perfect place for a rainy evening, and I enjoyed every bit of the experience. I wish I lived closer because I would go back in a heartbeat. And maybe I would even see some famous people who are reported to frequent this establishment regularly!!

Look, the prices are too high. The hummus especially is just priced way above what it should be. But I haven't found anywhere in Nashville or the surrounding area that puts so much flavor into their Mediterranean food. Falafel, fresh and delicious. Chicken dishes, spicy and wonderful. Rice perfectly cooked with a ton of saffron steamed into it. They use the spicy smoked paprika. They use the real seasonings, and they use them boldly. The salad dressing/sauce options have real flavor. The sweet tea had been spiked with cloves or allspice or something nice, which gave it a "chai" flavor that justified the $3 cost. House water has cucumber peel steeping in it. I would eat here all the time if the prices were lower in the evening. I don't remember them being so high before a certain Guy came to town and brought them a bunch of well-deserved attention. There is a real lack of real food in Hendersonville/Madison/Goodlettsville, so it's nice to see them still in business. I guess I'm torn.

The best food I've ever eaten, hands down!! We saw this on DDD, with Guy Fieri and decided to give it a try. Other than hummus, I'd never eaten Mediterranean food, so I asked the waitress to suggest something. She recommended Yakhney Chicken with Basmati rice and a Mediterranean salad with Taztziki. It was scrumptious! As an appetizer, we had Spicy Cilantro Hummus--the best I've ever tasted!!

Had the chichen Tika and it was very good. Humus was better than any I've had. Prices are a little high but you can taste the quality. I'll be back next time I'm in town.

The best Mediterranean food in the Nashville area. I had shawarma but like another reviewer said " made with love" a lot of love. The food was fresh. It tasted like the ingredients were picked from a garden right there and then- the water was refreshing and the pomegranate ice tea was the hit- the place is very small yet cosy. Will definitely go back if I am back in TN-

The best middle eastern food in the Nashville area. I would highly recommend the lamb Korma and the Hummus is incredible

I eat here at least once a week. Today I'm having Chicken in the Sajj, rice, salad and homage pita. Excellent!

Best Mediterranean Food ever !! My husband and I discovered this place about a year ago when we were in the hendersonville area . We got the chicken on the sajj , based on the yelp reviews and yes it was as amazing as fellow yelpers had said it would be ! We also got some hummus and falafel and loved those too ! we also got some rice pudding, again based on yelp reviews and it was just as good ! Thank you yelp for helping me find this gem !! My husband's office is 5 minutes away from cafe rakka and he often gets take outs for dinner (when he's not already had this for lunch that is). He often takes suppliers to this place for lunch and they love it too ! I'd have to say the chicken and hummus are my favorites. My husband loves their lahm-ajeen , the lamb burger ! Do yourself a favor and try this place, you will not be disppointed.

If you are happening through Hendersonville, you probably don't expect to find the best Mediterranean cuisine ever but here it is. Don't miss the hummus appetizer. Everything on the menu is basically fantastic otherwise! We are regulars!

  • Josh M.

The food is very good, but it's over priced for Hendersonville. Especially when you don't have a server, but order your food from a counter. It's a small and cozy atmosphere. We never regret going and eating the food, but we do regret having to pay down Nashville prices in our own back yard.

Guy Fieri, Ricky Scaggs, and The Oakridge Boys couldn't be wrong could they? Nope!!!! The lamb burger was outstanding!!! WOW!!! Not the cheapest place, but excellent!!! I will be back!!!!

Theres not one complaint for this place! I was craving for some good Mediterranean food and this is the place. The pita breads were all warm. The sweet Mediterranean tea is a must. They are even very kid friendly. They gave my son free cookies...can't pronounce or spell the name of it...but because he accidentally dropped a decoration and looked sad. The service was an A+ and because We were new to the place they were very patient and had good recommendations to try. This is a must try!!!

After leaving Sam's Sports Bar & Grill at Blackjack Cove, last night...... I went here for dinner. Their food is made from scratch and with tons and tons of love... No fear of getting food poisoning here. I highly recommend this place for the most amazing food, made with true love..... Cafe Rakka is the bomb...... LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place.....

Food is amazing...I get the Lamb Korma every time. Food can be a little pricey at night but for lunch, DEFINITELY check this place out. Sauces are amazing!! Everything is fresh....

Was visiting Hendersonville, TN for a wedding and wanted to scope out the local food. Found Cafe Rakka on Yelp and had a great experience. Had dinner with 2 friends and ordered a bunch of items to share. Order at the front counter, grab a table outside, and enjoy the fresh air while you sip on homemade ice tea, munch on pitas with hummus and babaganouj and falafel, and finish with dessert (baklava!). Portions are large but we obviously killed all of it (everyone else had to-go containers except for us). The service was stellar. Our waitress was really friendly and quick. Thumbs up!

Another new place to try! New to me at any rate :) Again, we were looking for a different place to eat and decided on Cafe Rakka. We ordered a couple of different dishes and a babaganush to start. Everything was very tasty. We had lunch portions and more than enough food! The pomegranate and red iced teas were tasty! Definitely would try it again :)

We went there because of the Triple D episode on the Food Network. The food was good, but it is very overpriced. The place is very tiny and there's not a lot of tables.

I've had dreams about the Falafel sandwich. The ingredients are very fresh and the staff are very friendly, even to vegetarians.

Dinner and service were top notch as always. Decided to have dessert too. THE RICE PUDDING! OMG THE RICE PUDDING! Cardamom, rose, pistachio and something else I can't identify. It's absolutely delicious.

Needed a break from biscuits and gravy while visiting Nashville so we went here. Outstanding. I had the lamb and it was fantastic. Kind of pricey, but the portions were huge. My parents who had never had Mediterranean food really enjoyed it as well. My only complaint is the way they ring you up. You go to a counter to place your order and pay, but then they bring the food to you. The problem is.... how do you tip before you are served? Seems backward. Luckily the service lived up to my tip. Great place.

What a taste exploration! I ordered the Spicy Tandoori Chicken With Cheese and it was scrumptious. Every bite was a new flavor with hints to Indian, Greek, and Mexican cuisine (the quesadilla-esque presentation of the Tandoori). I tasted the creamy melted cheese, the next bite tasted like curry, then fresh cilantro, onion and I think I detected a little lemon. Then I reached for my husband's plate and tasted saffron blended with cucumber, jasmine, and the yogurt sauce served with my dish. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! I highly recommend this place. My tip is to make sure you check the hours as we were there a little before 3 and they were getting ready to close down for a couple hours before dinner. Next time I will try the Turkish Coffee you guys are suggesting!

  • Bridgette C.

This was some of the best Mediterranean food I've had in a long time. Such an unassuming little gem in Hendersonville, off the main drag, and boy was I shocked. It's so small and cozy inside, like being in someone's house. The service was stellar. Their falafel sandwich was to-die-for good. HUGE, first of all, with delicious falafel and tons of veggies. They make their own cucumber water and it is just so darn refreshing! And their Turkish coffee...oh man the turkish coffee was just perfection. Strong, just a tad bit sweet, this stuff will keep you up and happy all day. I also tried their hummus. They do sampler plates for $2.99, and its the perfect compliment to any lunch offering. Just enough without being too much, and so creamy and flavorful. They have a lot of different flavor offerings and I am looking forward to trying all of them. It is very small in here and I could see it being crowded easily and quickly so I'd recommend coming here on off hours. But its worth it, I promise.

My friend led me to this Mediterranean oasis in Hendersonville after class one evening. This place smacked me in the face with delicious! So, so fabulous! Everything I had was wonderful. The spicy cilantro hummus is incredible and the shrimp were phenomenal. Nom! Nom! Nom! :)

Probably one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. It's delicious, and you don't feel gross after eating it. The dining room is to small... so sometimes it feels crowded, but the food.makes.you forget it. Try the cucumber water, and the hummus and pita. It's SO good! You will be glad you didn't pass this place by!

This is a must if you are in the Nashville area. You will love this food! Featured on Food Network "Diners, Drive-in's and Dives," you may have seen the review. Wonderful use of spices. Hummus and falafel are delicious. Great spicy vegetable rice dish. Good service, friendly staff... met the Chef, who knows how to make food taste really good. Small restaurant but don't hesitate, you will be impressed and the wait isn't long. Highly recommend!

Delicious! Haven't had Mediterranean food in a long time, and went to this place on a whim. The hummus was delicious, and I don't normally like hummus. I had the Chicken Tikka Masala, and I loved every bite! My boyfriend had a lamb chop dish and was also highly pleased. It is a small low-key restaurant in a unexpected place, but totally worth the trip!

  • Sebastian M.

OMFGYEAH!!! I ordered the Yahkney Chicken and spicy cilantro hummus. The hummus came out first and I have tasted my fair share hummus and I have to say this is some of the finest, the olive oil is top notch and the freshness from the cilantro just set it off!... then the entrée... a chicken soup with a flavor punch you wouldn't believe, it looks and smells like an Indian Masala but with a Mediterranean flavor... I have to stop now so I can finish eating... oh and try the chai tea, totally worth it

Hello, finally made it back again after moving away The cravings are endless. Thank you Chef Rakka for making the birthdays of my Mom and Dad special even though you were busy. What can I say? Shrimp dish my favorite ever did not disappoint as well as everything the family enjoyed. Then back before we had to go to the airport for the most delicious lamb burger ever! We enjoyed every minute especially that you had time to visit before we left. The kids adored the rice pudding. I know I cannot get you to move and do not blame you but we are counting days until we can come back and visit again. Cookbook maybe? Please?

We went because we saw Cafe Rakka on Triple-D, and I'm really glad we went. We shared the Baba Ghanoush and it was amazing. My daughter is a vegetarian, and she loved the veggie platter. My wife was disappointed that the Kabob Halebi wasn't available, but her Spinach and Meat was pretty good. I had the Shawermah on the Sajj (spicy) and thought it was great. I liked the red tea, but the Mediterranean unsweetened tea was even better. We got there early to beat the crowds, but the place was still only half-full when we left. We will be going back.

One of my favorite places! Great food and friendly staff. It's not always quick service, but definitely worth it if you have the time to wait a little extra for a delicious meal! Thank you!

Wow... just wow! I tried Cafe Rakka this weekend after seeing it featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and I am so glad I did. Mediterranean food and Indian food are favorites of mine and I have tried some really good dishes over the years at various restaurants all over the US, but Cafe Rakka offers something really different. It merges Indian and Mediterranean, two cuisines I would not expect to come together. I ordered the Yahkney chicken and it changed my life. So delicious! And the Middle Eastern iced tea was one of the most unique tea's I've ever had. It exceeded every expectation. Go try this place... NOW!

Decided to give this place a shot after seeing them on an episode of DD&D. My husband and I went for lunch and ordered the hummus bar w/ roasted eggplant and olives...YUM! We also decided to give the cheese platter (house made cheese) a try since it was one of the items featured on DD&D too was AWESOME. The two of us made a meal out of these dishes...portions are generous and the above came with fresh pita bread for dipping. The place is small, so get there early, or be prepared to wait. They do have a nice patio for warmer weather which adds additional seating. Overall, I was impressed and will be back! Thanks for featuring on your show, Guy!

Best Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food I've had in the Nashville area. It's about a 15 minute drive up from Nashville but the food makes it worth it. We had a couple of lunch menu items (Chicken On The Sajj and Shawermah On The Sajj along with Falafel and Baba Ghanoush)--all the food was very well prepared, assertively flavored, and carefully presented. . Oh and we ordered some Baklava as well--superb! Potentially good tip: after we ordered, a man of (presumably) Middle Eastern extraction came in, walked straight to the counter and asked (in a thick accent) if they had the lamb burger. They did and he ordered it without hesitation. So, that's on the list for us next time!

Stumbled on this one when looking through Yelp while I was out. The food is STELLAR. I had the lamb burger made spicy and it was incredible. The service was terrible. I ordered at the counter and took my seat. A server brought my drink. Another server dropped off my food. No one else approached the table during my entire meal. I finally went to the counter for a drink refill and a to go box. GREAT food. I will be back, but my opt for to go next time

Last time I went I had the Lamb chops and I was not disappointed. And the hummas, I could not stop eating it, even when all the bread was gone... I was using my finger to scoop it up and finish it. The best hummus anywhere. Go here, you will not be sorry.

Upfront Confesstion time: I heard about this place because I'm a triple D fan (Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives for the newbs) and when I happened to be in the area I had to stop in. I nearly missed this place as I was expecting a more flamboyant sign, but I caught sight of it right before I needed to turn (isn't that always the case?). This place is small, cut in half during the winter as it is impossible to sit outside (BRRR), and the dining room can sit maybe 25-30 people? However, it is a charming atmosphere and the people who work here are super nice. I also must admit, I'm unaccustomed to mediterranean (and the like) cuisine so my taste buds aren't used to the kinds of flavors they have here, but what I had was delicious. I didn't want to go too crazy with my menu choice (Chicken Tika Mosala) as I am a supremely picky eater and am very influenced by texture almost as much as taste. This dish was hotter than I expected and left my mouth tingling and quite warm, but it was good. There was enough food for two people, so I suppose the $20 cost (w/tax) was worth it, but if I were coming here on my own I would definitely not want to pay that much; however, the food IS made right when you order it and it's all fresh. The basmati rice was a good palette cleanser in between my bites of spicy chicken, so thank goodness for that! Unknowingly, I sat in the exact same spot that Guy Fieri sat in...which was also right in front of the signed poster of him hanging on the wall, hah. As I said before, I'm no expert in mediterranean food, but this place is supremely delicious and if you happen to be in the Hendersonville area, I'd recommend stopping in.

It's been said a million times, but Cafe Rakka is a place that really and truly cares about each dish they put out into the world. Quality control is on point and the ingredients are always fresh and worth paying a little extra. My personal favorite is the baklava, which is just the right balance of syrup and filo; it is sweet but not goopy, just the way I like it. Their hummus is absolutely great as well.

  • Zee M.

I, too, was compelled to come here because of Guy Fieri. My brother, too, had seen the episode, but as a repeat. Regardless, it got us to try and ENJOY the Baba Ghanoush and a lamb dish that I can't find on the menu (it was one of the ones that didn't sound like an Indian dish, so the name escapes me), since the menu page on their site still says "new menu coming soon." Both were spectacular - I figured we were in for a treat when I saw the layout of the BG alone...topped with pomegranate bit-lets. BTW, the slight hint of cucumber in the water was great. We didn't end up trying the Turkish Coffee, but next time...next time... Not so difficult to get to; we made it difficult by taking a wrong turn. But worth a trip if you're in and around Nashville. Cozy, inviting, and stocked full of a lot of products that I wish I'd had the money for. It is officially on future To-Do lists, so I have to go back! BTW, if you haven't tried Baba Ghanoush, think of it as Hummus with eggplant instead of chickpeas. It you haven't tried Hummus...well, I just don't understand.

In Nashville area, watched "Triple D" on television and decided to check this restaurant out. Wow!! the food is delicious, a little pricey, but it really is worth every penny you pay. Presentation of the dishes are like a "work of art" beautiful to look at, almost too beautiful to eat, but once you taste the food, man oh man, you will be craving for more!! I am hooked!!

My parents live in Nashville, so when I went down to visit this was one of a few places that I was dying to try out. I was not disappointed. One reason why I wanted to try Cafe Rakka was because I had seen it on the Food Network, on Triple D. When I went into the place, it was cozy and very friendly. I asked for a specific item on the menu that Guy had tried on Triple D, and while the item I had asked for was only offered on the dinner menu (I was there at lunchtime), the kitchen was willing to make an exception considering that I had come so far (from Canada) to try their food. I was very impressed by that gesture of great customer service. The food was amazing. I had the salad with the homemade cheese and it was everything I hoped it would be and then some. The entree was just as good, and even my Dad who usually isn't a big fan of Mediterranean food enjoyed eating there as well. I had a very pleasant dining experience at Cafe Rakka and would recommend it to anyone. I plan to dine there again the next time I come down to visit the folks.

A Syrian Restaurant? In Hendersonville no less? I should probably give it four stars just for being a little bit of culture in Hendersonville, but I found it just to bland and medium to do so. It had been over a year since I was last here. I figured that now that the Guy Fieri buzz had dimmed a bit, it would be good to go back and see it it was any better than I remembered it. We shared a platter of humus, felafel, tehina, baba ganoush, and salad along with their cheese plate thingy. I found them all to be very mainstream bland, with nothing that set any of them apart from any other middle eastern restaurant I have been to. In fact, the humus tasted basically the same as the Sabra brand stuff I pick up at Kroger. As we are vegetarians, I may be being unfair, I've heard people rave about its lamb, but for me -It was just OK.

I have been coming here since 2009... before the Triple D (Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives) craze haha. And although I like to try new things, I am scared to get anything else besides the hummus plate with eggplant and tabbouleh followed by the tandoori chicken with cheese and onions. Filled with flavor that never ends, spiciness, and delicious cheese to smooth everything out, it is my go-to dish. I'm sure that everything else is just as wonderful! The yogurt sauce and the house water with cucumber are refreshing and helps with the spiciness of the food. It's all about balance! I've never had bad service! It's a tad pricey for a student/young person's budget, so I go there with my parents haha or as a treat. I'm even going there today! It is probably my favorite restaurant in Hendersonville.

Excellent food and service. While they don't officially take reservations, we did call ahead to let them know we were a party of 9. The restaurant only seats about 30 so that's a lot of people. Started the meal off with the hummus bar, cheese platter and both were excellent. The chef sent a complimentary taste of Falafal, too. I enjoyed the pomegranate tea, however, a few in our party thought it was a little too spicy. Entree's were wonderful. I had the Vegetarian Platter and highly recommend the Tabouli and the Baba Ganoush. My son had the Filet Mignon Kabobs grilled on the Salt Block (as shown on Diner's Drive-in's and Dives) and he said the taste was amazing and melt in your mouth. My daughter had the same and she had never eaten Mediterrean food before and enjoyed everything. Son-in-law had the beef and lamb and said it as also delicious. Dessert- the Chocolate baklava was good-I will try the regular baklava another time. Rice pudding also looked wonderful.

My wife and I went to Cafe Rakka on Saturday evening. We went early hoping to avoid a wait we weren't disappointed we ordered and we're seated immediately. We started with hot red tea and hummus. The tea was delicious and can be ordered hot or cold, the hummus was the best I ever had and they have a hummus bar available with several different kinds. I ordered the lamb korma. It was delicious I would give my meal alone 5 stars. My wife had the rib eye kabobs. They were delicious also, whoops, hope she doesn't read this. She had to trim a lot of gristle and fat so only 2 thirds of her meat to be eaten. Food was great but the service was lacking after ordering water we had to ask for it twice more before we got it and I had to ask for a refill twice and we had to ask for the to go boxes twice. Unacceptable. We will go back because I have a friend in Connecticut who wants to try it. He saw it featured on a program on the Food Channel

Oh my goodness, this place is so good. I went for a rushed lunch and ordered the falafel appetizer and a salad. The falafel is homemade and is parsley green and juicy on the inside with a crisp crust on the outside, making the falafel both fresh and not greasy. The owner makes his own cheese and his own yogurt dip, both of which are incredible (I couldn't help but try, even though I'm trying to give up dairy!). I cannot wait to go back when I have time to relax on the patio, and I'm kicking myself now that I didn't pick up the Groupon they had a couple of weeks ago!

sorry, rakka. the food was good, it wasn't exceptional. well, i take that back. the hummus and the tabouleh were next level... but the amount of bread they give you to try to eat them is boderline insulting. at two bucks for a re-up, it got pricey quick for our group of five. next was our ordering. we placed our order, and it took about 45 minutes to receive our food. i don't have a problem waiting for food for that long, but this isn't that place. everything was good, but not 45 minutes good. service was slow, but all right. everything took to long about this visit. the ride there (which they get a pass on, it's me that lives far from from the place), the amount of time between refills, the amount of time to get our food, the amount of time it took to get the bill. i wish i could give the place 2.5 stars, and i can't justify rounding up. eric b

Living near Hendersonville makes it easy to visit Cafe Rakka regularly. I agree that the place is tiny, as it was when it was the original September's Cafe. I also have had very slow or inconsistent service, though it was always cheerfully performed. For us, the pros outweigh the cons by virtue of excellent food. We really enjoy the food, and wish the menu were more extensive. Their "special" Chicken Tikka Masala is to die for, and comes with rice, salad, and a couple of slices of pita bread. We usually order the hummus sampler, most recently with jalapeno and cilantro, and split that and the entree. The cucumber lemon water is very refreshing on a hot day, and the pomegranate tea is quite tasty. If you're in the Hendersonville area and enjoy Mediterranean food, try Cafe Rakka..

What a nice change. We had a late lunch here, today. It's a cozy place with refreshing orange and turquoise decor & a nice outdoor patio. The smell of the place was instantly appealing. He & I split the Baba Ghanoush appetizer. It was creamy & very smokey with a nice sweetness when a pomegranate seed got in the mix. My entree was the Chicken on the Sajj. Great flavor on the chicken...SUPER-fresh saffron rice. We ordered Baklava & Rice Pudding. The Baklava was unlike any I've ever had. Instead of phyllo, filling, phyllo, filling...it was layers of phyllo wrapped around a very dense pistachio paste. It's heavily dusted with cinnamon. The Rice Pudding was a lovely experience! It's served in a beautiful little bowl with a miniature spoon. The taste was like Christmas in a cup! It was cool & creamy, flavored with nutmeg & clove with a dusting of pistachios on top. I would not hesitate to order just the Pudding with a cup of coffee. We will go back and I will order the lamb & pomegranate tea. The service was really good, too.

Had Lunch this week around 2.00pm, they were out of lamb...a pity but we were late. No Baba Ghanoush either. We had Shrimp Jalfrezi and Chicken "something orange". I guess we expected more of an ethnic experience and what we got was a "west coast cafe in the middle of no where experience". The food bore no similarities to any Middle Eastern or Indian food I've had on this or any other continent. BUT it was fresh and tasty. A portion of rice and salad was served with the shrimp/chicken. The shrimp were lightly coated in the "jalfrezi" sauce and the chuckie was similarly orange coated. There was a selection of teas and my turkish coffee was brought to the table in it's Ibrik which I liked. The service was excellent, all very young but attentive/informed and perky. A good addition to Hendersonville ('nuff said). A nice well run little business but not cooked to our taste.

Went on Wednesday night after we saw it on Diners and Dives...It was sooooo good and you get a lot for the money...order sparingly unless you have extra room in the fridge...

AMAZING! There are really no other words to describe it. My taste buds lit up! I had the cheese platter and the lamb soup stew thing. Absolutely delightful. My mouth is just watering just thinking about it. A must go to for sure.

The food was great, no question about it. Fresh, healthy ingredients, different choices than you would get at, say, a Greek place though similar flavors. The only thing I have to say that's negative, and why I didn't give them 5 stars, was the service. It was so slow! The wait staff seemed disorganized and started freaking out when it started getting busy. Not many tables, but if you get there before 5:30 (we went on a Friday) you'll be fine.

Totally worth the out of the way drive on our trip thru TN. Apparently Guy has been there due to the stencil spraypainted on the wall. I had the shawerma, the Mrs had some sort of thing that looked like a middle eastern mexican pizza. Both were amazing. Service was good and had we not come right before them closing for dinner service, we would have stayed for dessert. Will stop there again the next time through the state.

This little restaurant is the hidden jewel of Nashville and Sumner County. They have the freshest, most delicious food in town. Their appetizers are wonderful - hummus, falafel and tabbouleh - the best anywhere. The grilled Eggplant and Cheese pita is my favorite along with their Rakka Mediterranean Salad. Don't leave without trying their Rice Pudding with chopped pistachios and their delicious Red Tea - so healing. The chef is a 5th generation cheese and yogurt maker. Everything is made fresh daily including their pita bread. Many of their secret recipes are generations old. His wife Linda is a Hendersonville local. They make a great team. Everything is clean, fresh, and the food presentation is beautiful. It's great for both vegetarians and meat eaters. You have to check out this Hendersonville hot spot - Cafe Rakka most definitely rocks!!

I'm from New Orleans, and came here with my girlfriend's family. Easily top three best Mediterranean places I've tried. Great portion sizes for the price!

Good food. It is definitely different, so if you go and have no idea what to expect, like I did, keep your mind open when ordering something you've never heard of. Their baklava is amazing and they literally have the best salmon I've ever had...and that is NOT an overstatement. Pretty cool atmosphere too...I love small local places!!

Cafe Rakka is the best new restaurant in Hendersonville in a long time! We love Middle Eastern food, and this restaurant is superb. The food is very fresh, with everything made to order on the premises. They even have an herb garden in the back of the restaurant for their fresh herbs! Everything on the menu we have had is excellent, from the hummus bar and ahrayess appetizers to the chicken and beef on the sajj and shish tawook. My husband is addicted to their red tea (made from flowers found in the Syrian desert and imported to the U.S.). I would eat here every day if I could!

On a whim, my husband and I went to dinner at Cafe Rakka Friday night. We're fans of Mediterranean food and culture, having honeymooned in Turkey and really just finding excuses to try new things. We'd seen Cafe Rakka on, of course, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and expected good things from what we saw - and the food didn't disappoint! On the whole, the food was delicious - the baba ghanoush was very smoky, and the pomegranate seeds a nice touch. The hummus was great, and the falafel was like a "delicious Turkish hushpuppy" according to my husband. He had the beef cooked on the sajj and it was very good - reminiscent of a dish we used to have at a too-soon-closed establishment in Brentwood, Genie's Persian Palace. It's unfortunate they don't serve alcohol, but the cucumber water was a nice touch for the meal. I wish I could just rank the food - it was more than good and unique, but it was quite a haul to sample fare I can find "just-as-good-but-maybe-without-a-sajj-and-pomegranate-seeds" of around the corner. The reason for the three stars is due in large part to the service. Our waitress had clearly just started or was having trouble for some other reason - because she wasn't even sure whether the restaurant served alcohol and had to ask. Later, I overheard a co-worker rudely snap at her "You! Come!" which was a little off-putting. Having worked in fast-paced, high-stress environments I understand the need for bold communication at times, but charitable words should always rule the day in the presence of customers. Additionally, the vibe was weird among all the employees - I was under the impression Cafe Rakka was more of a family-operated establishment, and I recognized the chef from the Guy Fieri show, but the staff was young (to the tune of "when is your Mom coming to pick you up?" young), gossipy and loud - not to mention inattentive. I was also stunned they were out of chai - how do you run out of chai?- and a tad miffed there wasn't a suggestion made to recover the "beverage dollars" I was clearly so ready to part with! Combine these observations with the relative haul it is from West Nashville, and we won't be back. We forsook some of the best similar food in Nashville to branch out to Cafe Rakka: Anatolia Turkish Restaurant, less than half a mile from our house. While elements of Cafe Rakka's food surpassed Anatolia's, they weren't enough to tip the scales of overall value (I don't think I mentioned that it was $40 for an appetizer, two entrees and water!), location and friendliness of staff. I invite those in Hendersonville to travel on down to Nashville and try Anatolia on White Bridge Road ( yelp.com/biz/anatolia-tu… ) or Kalamata's on Hillsboro ( yelp.com/biz/kalamatas-n… ). Both places are similarly styled to Cafe Rakka, but skip the whole high school kid vibe - and they're a lot less than $40 for a similar order. Sure, these weren't on Food Network, but they are time tested and will probably survive Cafe Rakka.

The food here is great! The menu is rather limited, but offers great selections. They have some of the best hummus I've ever had! As far as entrees go, the Tandoori Chicken is my favorite. The place is small and it takes a little longer to get your food compared to other restaurants. But everything is made fresh, in house, so it is definitely worth the wait!

I grew up eating Middle Eastern food. My father was born in the Middle East and was an accomplished cook. I learned to cook by watching him in the kitchen. When I go to a "Middle Eastern Restaurant," I typically do so with a mix of hope and trepidation. Will this be another variant of the over-glorified Gyro shop, or will it offer tastes to rival or even surpass those from my memories of home? If you look at food from Greece, to the Middle East, to India, to Thailand, you find a spectrum of mixed cuisines and similar dishes. With Greek stuffed grape leaves similar to Lebanese "Mechshe." From Greek Tzatziki to Middle Eastern Laban to Indian Raita, you find foods that span cultures and geographic boundaries -- with each region adding its own flair to the dishes. Cafe Rakka is a rare culinary home to this world-spanning cuisine. In a small cafe, you find a doorway into half a world of culinary traditions. Be prepared to experience new and strange flavors. Smokey Aleppo Pepper; flowery, aromatic cardamom; complex allspice; aromatic Saigon cinnamon, and other spices come together to surprise and enchant you. The menu spans Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Indian Cuisines, with Chef Rakka adding his own special flair. You may think that such a menu is odd, but all of these cultures share rich traditions of spice-laden, flavorful foods, and Chef Rakka executes them wonderfully. We came to Cafe Rakka with a party of eight, so we were able to sample a variety of dishes. We started out with appetizers -- babaganoush, hummus, tabbouleh, and the homemade cheese platter. Everything was excellent. The babaganoush was smokey with nice chunks of eggplant, as opposed to the often completely pureed version. Score one -- my dad never used a food processor, he mashed his babaganoush with a fork. Chunky is goooood! The Hummus was also excellent with a nice touch of whole roasted garlic, toasted pine nuts, and (gasp!) pomegranate seeds. Awesome. I would have never thought of the pomegranate seeds, but they worked nicely. The cheese plate is a classic farmer's cheese and is a wonderfully complimented by mixed greens and kalamata olives. Finally, the tabbouleh was well-prepared with a proper mix of parsley to couscous and other ingredients. It was served with lemon slices that helped, but I prefer my tabbouleh with more lemon and garlic overall. It was very good, I am just, in this case, heavier-handed with the garlic than Chef Rakka. As we waited for our entrees, I cleared my palate with sips of lemon-cucumber water. A surprising refreshing beverage. Our entrees arrived and the waitress set before me the best Chicken Korma I have ever had in my life. The plate was set with a nice serving of basmati rice, a salad with a yogurt dressing, and a bowl of creamy chicken korma topped with toasted nuts. I just dipped my spoon into the sauce and snagged some of the roasted nuts and tried my first taste. Amazing! The blend of spices, the nuts, the heat (I ordered spicy), and the creamy sauce was heavenly. I cannot begin to tell you about the experience. I have eaten in excellent Indian restaurants in New York, London, and all over the U.S., but this Chicken Korma topped them all. The chicken was perfectly cooked. The sauce was a wonderful blend of flavors created by the chef's attention to detail, right down to the single, delicious whole dried fig added to sweeten the pot. I also tried the Filet Mignon skewers, cooked on a Himalayan salt block. This was really a nice dish. It was served with beautifully roasted vegetables that had just an edge of char -- Perfect. The meat was not as tender as you might expect, but the flavor was wonderful. Not overly salty at all for having been cooked on a salt block. Finally, we wrapped up with Turkish Coffee, Mamoul, and Baklava. The Turkish coffee was strong and rich with cardamom. My mother would have LOVED it. The Mamoul (not baked in-house) was not what I call Mamoul, but it was very good nonetheless. The Baklava was rich with Saigon cinnamon, so much so that if you are not used to this spice, long-absent in the U.S., you will wonder what creates the wonderful aromatic flavor -- its the REAL cinnamon flavor most of us grew up without thanks to the Vietnam War. After dinner I spoke with Chef Rakka and he turned out to be outgoing, friendly and a wonderful person. We compared family histories and talked about food. I am Jewish and not sure what his beliefs are, but we are brothers in our appreciation of food, spices, and a lovingly prepared meal. All in all, I have to give Chef Rakka five stars and encourage everyone to support this very special culinary artist. A rare find.

The service is slow and bad. She took our order and then went to two other tables and took their orders before turning ours in. I also think it is a bit overpriced for Hendersonville TN
