First the waitress dropped our drinks, it took a very long time to get our food, the main course with salad was one leaf of lettuce, the bill was wrong. DO NOT GO THERE!

Not awesome. I went on a Tuesday night, the server was charming but not very timely considering the empty dining room, they were out of half of the beers on tap, and when I settled for a local porter, what I got was a flat macro light lager. The ribs were probably tender within a couple days of being cooked, but by the time they got to my plate they were dry and re-smothered with what I assume was sysco BBQ sauce. Ultimately sad. But the server made the experience tolerable

This is one of the few places open in Custer for lunch between 2 and 5. The food is really bad. I would not suggest you eat here. My daughter got the ribs and spit them out. I tried a bit and it was very mealy and weird flavor. I had the grilled chicken salad and the chicken was a leather rawhide. My moms burger was a frozen patty heated through, microwave maybe. Very disappointing meal. Im sure it's a fun bar at night.

Great atmosphere but lousy service and poor food presentation. The buffalo was okay but the sides were very commercial, nothing special at all. The staff made you feel uncomfortable to ask for anything. I have no plans on returning, the only meal that was good out of the four of us was the buffalo prime roast.

AVOID THIS PLACE! Worst dinner I had since a long time! They claim to have 100 types of beers, but on the beer list were only about 20 pretty standard ones and they did not even had all of them. Food took forever, I was honestly about to leave. Wings were okay, burger bun had a weird taste to it. Only the pattie was somehow edible. Came with about 5 fries, plus some crumbly ones and one(!) withered leaf of lettuce. After complaining, got more, fresh fries that were okay. Only positive: they took the burger off the cheque, and waitress was quite friendly.

$15 for a handful of popcorn shrimp, a dollop of (instant?) mashed potatoes, and salad from a bag consisting of iceberg lettuce and a few carrot shreds. Our server was nice, but much of the staff seemed grumpy. They advertise 100 beers but don't have a beer menu, though you can sample their ~15 beers on tap. I wanted a sample and sat at the bar for 10 minutes while my server ran around getting drinks and serving other tables, and 3 other staff in the bar area ignored me. And I was the only one at the bar, and there were fewer than 10 tables occupied in the whole place. My husband's burger was fine, as were the kids' chicken strips and fries.

my boyfriend and i were here once during our trip. we got a suggestion from the motel worker and got a 10%discount coupon. ordered buffalo burger with sweet potato fries. it was really good taste! my boyfriend asked BBQ sauce to bring for him and it was made by their own cooker. we've never eaten this damn good sauce entire of our life!!!!! trust me guys, if you will be there, go ask them about the BBQ sauce! it's free serve. :) but couldn't buy it because they don't sell it.

Horrible ... Food, service, atmosphere, etc. You name it! Custer has many more options.

My wife and I visited the Dark Horse in July 2014. While I agree with the comments posted previously about the look of the place, our overall experience was positive. The Dark Horse needs to be taken for what it is, where it is. Bear with me for a moment. In our travels though Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota we found that every establishment (store, campground, or restaurant) was experiencing staffing problems. There are just not enough workers available in these sparsely populated areas to fill all the positions needed. Temporary foreign workers are needed to fill the gaps. So, we found language problems, training shortcomings, and yes, poorer service just about everywhere compared to establishments in bigger towns or back at home. So, it is understandable that many of the reviewers knocked down their service ratings. However, given the challenges of running a restaurant under such circumstances, the service was just fine. We sat at the bar. The bartender and manager, Max, was friendly and attentive. We watched him being patient with a newly hired worker from Belarus, explaining to him how to help out at the bar. We struck up a good conversation with Max--the kind of bartender banter that makes you feel welcome. Our draft beers were fine. No issues with glassware as mentioned in previous reviews. Our bison burgers were tasty and cooked just fine. The fires were well cooked, too, not limp and greasy as you find when the fryer's oil is past it's time. After having a beer, the bourbon pecan pie was too sweet for my taste, but those with a sweet tooth would be happy with it, I expect. Overall review--a good, reasonably priced bar/restaurant menu, a great selection of draft and bottled beers, and a bartender who will trade jokes and stories and make you want to come back. Get past the décor, sit at the bar, and joke with Max. If you tell him a good joke, he may even knock 10 percent off you bill.

Ownership is obviously confused. They don't know if they want to be a nightclub or a nice restaurant. The food was terrible and we were bombarded by a nonstop pounding techno beat.

A caveat - We came here during Sturgis bike week. Our server was from a former soviet block country who barley spoke English and obviously was hired on as bike week surge hire. She did not know the menu, did not ask how I wanted my steak cooked, did not know what sides were offered as the choices. When the food came, she laid down the wrong orders in front of each of the four of us. She only brought two of the three waters we asked for and the orders did not arrive according to the special requests that were asked for. The side of mayo learned how not to be seen Only one of the four meals ordered had any seasoning which was the pepper steak and it was over-seasoned. The buffalo filet was very thinly sliced and closer to medium than medium-rare. Will we be back? Yeah, but not during bike week. A local friend of ours said this is the best place in town so if we happen to be in town other than bike week then maybe we will darken the doorway with our presence.

Gross, the food tasted terrible, and was really greasy. The beer glasses tasted like fish bowls... Never go here.

The Dark Horse is located around the back from Cattleman's and up a flight of stairs on the main strip in Custer. It's a great place to go for a brew. Huge beer selection, maybe 20 varieties on tap and another 50 or so in bottles. The interior is dimly lit, with sturdy furniture-- lots of 4x4 wood posts coated with glossy paint -- creating an ambiance like a collegetown watering hole. Families may not feel comfortable here. Service was fine. Waiter handled our questions and special orders with aplomb. Food was okay but not great. Might be partly my mistake for not ordering their famous buffalo meat. I got a steak sandwich instead, because that was what I had a taste for. The nightly specials are bargains but the rest of the menu runs a little pricey.

Not a bad place to stop and get something to eat. It was different from what we though it was going to be. there service was fast and friendly, the food was good as well, The beer battered mozzarella sticks are yummy and the ribs were pretty good too. I would say this has got to be the best place to eat in this town. The name of the place dark horse, they should think about changing somethings inside the place like the purple walls.?

The elk steak and beer were great. However our appetizer came out cold and had obviously been sitting under the heat lamp for quite a while because the lettuce garnish was wilted and brown. The appetizer came out with the meal so was hard to enjoy. Also, I am allergic to wheat and told the server several times to make sure there was no bread on the plate. My meal came out with a french roll sitting directly on top of the steak. If we return to the area, we will definitely try another place to eat!

These guys must wash their beer glasses in the mop bucket smell of the glasses over powered the aroma of the beer

We came here because it was one of the only places open when we got to Custer at 10 pm. This place was pretty much how I imagined. The food was ok. Not the best, not the worst. The service was fine--our waitress was very nice. The beer list is pretty good though--this would be a great place to come for just a drink.

Stopped here for dinner on our recent visit to Custer Park. Place was almost empty at 7pm. Maybe 2 other people there. Bartender was friendly, but had very little knowledge of the taps. His supervisor though was kind of unfriendly towards the bartender, which made us uncomfortable. Food was terrible. Yes, it is possible to screw up a burger. It was so salty it was almost inedible. Prices were also pretty high; appetizers especially. Not planning to return to this one.

We arrived at about 5:30 pm for an early dinner after a hard day of sight seeing and were pleasantly surprised. They had a $10.00 Bacon Wraped Filet and a great selection of draft beer, which, since we got there before 6:00 pm, was only $2.00 a pint!! The steak was very good, service was friendly, and the beer great! You can't beat this place especially at those prices.

We asked for recommendations from the woman at our hotel, and she suggested here. I'm quite glad she did! It's pricey - 2 entrees, 1 soda, 2 beers, & tip came out to just over $42. However, the food was delicious. I had the buffalo brisket, and it was cooked to perfection. They were even willing to swap out the coleslaw (ick!) that came with the meal for a green salad, no extra charge. And they have diet mountain dew. A non cola diet soda at a restaurant? Practically unheard of where I'm from. It's great. I don't know why the previous reviewer (also from Sunnyvale, how odd) was complaining about the English skills of the employees. We - and, seemingly, everyone else - had no problems understanding the employees.

well, what can I say. The brew selection was pretty good and if it's in a bottle, the probability of it going wrong is slim to none. The buffalo steak with actually quite good. The kids had the buffalo burger and enjoyed that as well. The backed potato was great....The mash potato seemed to be not fresh but almost from an instant box. The deserts which sounded great, were not. The Chocoloate Chocolate cake tasted like it came from the local grocery store. Same for the lemon meringue pie. The Bourban Pecan pie we thought would have been great, but my wife, who loves a good pecan pie, did not even finish it.

Dark Horse Steak and Brew is like a mirage of water in a dry, dry desert, except it is a great restaurant in a strip of old townie ice cream shacks and cutesie grocery stores. On a road trip with some of my friends, we escaped the storm in the National Park and took respite at Dark Horse Steak and Brew. Maybe it was the bitter cold, the windy mountain roads and sleeting rain, but I was very impressed by the beer selection, wait staff and the FOOD. I got my go to food: chicken strips. They were perfecto. Next time I am in Custer National Forest, which is also beautiful, I will be taking a little break-ski at Dark Horse Steak and Brew.

Ribs and chicken were good. Had Elk Steak on the menu if you're game. Prices are a little high. Service was questionable.

This restaurant was awful. We were told to go there for the steaks. First of all the decor is hideous. The staff can hardly speak english and the food was really bad. We never got re-fills on our drinks the entire time. The steak was not cooked correctly, the roll was raw and so was the baked potato. Try another place instead and skip this one!

I know people say this all the time, but I wish it was possible to put zero, or negative stars. My husband and I took a trip out to the Black Hills, had a fabulous time, what a beautiful area. One night we were looking for someplace to have a nice dinner and rather than go to the Cattleman's out on the main highway, we spotted the little saloon down the side street called the Dark Horse Steak & Brew. We should have walked out the minute we walked in, why we didn't I'll never know. The decor was pretty chessy and normally that wouldn't be enough to chase us away, but we should have followed our instinct and turned around before the door had time to close behind us. My husband was attempting to make small talk with the host, who didn't understand a word we were saying. The server was just as bad. When my husband asked about the beer selection they guy, again who could barely form a sentence, didn't know anything about the extensive beer list that they advertised both inside and outside. Every time we had to interact with them it was a nightmare. The food was so-so, not great, but we did manage to get some of it down. Overall it was a pretty dismal experience, I would not recommend this place to anyone.
