Our waitress was terrible. Petite, long blonde hair in a ponytail, could have been anywhere from her late twenties to thirties. She would toss things down on the table and walk away immediately, never asking if we needed anything or how we were doing. We felt like we were a burden. She did get our large order right after coming back once to ask again what I had wanted, which impressed us. Brought my beer and kinda threw it at me. She didn't bother to bring a glass (the beer came in a bottle) and I had to flag her down to ask for a glass. She wasn't professional and we had to ask about specials. Anyway, I could keep going but she was bad. However, the food was good! Good hibachi, they put way too much ginger dressing on our salads but they were nice and crisp, sushi was good but the tempura shrimp in it was a little chewy, really good veggie dumplings and veggie eggrolls!!! Just wish the service was better. Oh and the hostess, it was her first night-college aged brunette- she was very friendly and courteous!

"My son and I ate there on 12/19/12 and had wonderful food and service. Prices are reasonable and portions are more than adequate."

Yikes....YIKES!! I went to tsunami for the half off F&B Monday nights--- not worth it, even 50% off. I ordered the Yaki Udon, and unfortunately received the Udon Soup instead, which had 2 pieces of Tempura shrimp stuck in the soup...totally soaked and soggy. I'm sorry, but that's pretty basic, don't put fried things in water! Plus, the soup was gross, I barely ate 5 bites of it. My boyfriend got the Hibachi with Tofu. The tofu was basically uncooked and the veggies that came with it tasted like they had been run through the dishwasher. I know Charleston's standards for Asian cuisine are ridiculously low, but this place is basically inedible. Needless to say, we left and immediately ran to harris teeter for tums...Sorry, no crazy deal will ever get me back in this dump...Maybe I wasn't drunk enough?? Sounds like that's the only way to enjoy this muck.

The food is not good for the price. This is an expensive sushi restaurant for not so great sushi. I went here once and ordered 10 rolls to split between 3 people, so we tried a lot of their specialty rolls. I left very disappointed about how much money we spent because it was not worth it. The rolls were covered in sauce! They like to drench their rolls in sauce or set their rolls on top of sauce. Moving to Charleston has been difficult because there are no good sushi places! I've been to 10 places and have been disappointed everywhere...

Very tasty sushi, some of the best we have had in the area. Service was a little slow but they were very busy. Be prepared for the "nightclub scene" if you go on a weekend night. Drinks were pricey for what you got but for a downtown establishment, they were not horrible. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.

I don't normally write reviews, but I feel that my experience tonight has garnered a review in its own. I will do many things, other than condemn my waitress's efforts in her attempt to satisfy my party's order (although the majority of which was fulfilled by the manager of Tsunami, who was, in his self, completely incapable of running anything short of a car wash). Acknowledging that Charleston is a town whose claim to fame is based upon fine dining; I am thoroughly impressed that an establishment such as Tsunami has continued to survive. I can attribute the affluence of this sub-par restaurant to one thing, and one thing only; that is dollar Blue Moons (a beer, for you light tongued north-easterners). It is a shame that a venue such as Tsunami has been forced to resort to luring young 20 something-year-olds in order to build a client base. Don't get me wrong; as I express my disappointment with this excuse of a "sushi spot'. I will surely attend Tsunami when I am in the mood to assume the role of a blackout drunk who has given up both his integrity and ability to entertain relatively sociable people. No role of which I plan to take on anytime soon. This critique should be subject to customer review. In response, I ask you, what better source of a restauranteur' can you find other than, what I would hope to be considered, a relatively educated student such as myself. Granted, I have not posted much, if any review of Asian cuisine in the past. If there is one thing I pride myself upon, it is my understanding of good Asian food, This recognition has come from an extensive history in both Asian film (including films directed by Chow Yun-fat) and cuisine alike. This review is, for my audience (and the adventurous parent) who has decided to visit his/her daughter/son for parents weekend in the wonderful city we call charleston. Steer clear of Tsunami and take the more conservative approach, such as O'ku, which is to say, decent, at best. If an establishment cannot serve a group of college students, who is to say they can satisfy your desire for Asian seafood. Admitting that I don't have Johnathan Gold's credentials, I hope that you will acknowledge my ability to catch onto the difference between a worthless and worthwhile meal. However, I have taken an economics class, and I for one can say, with sheer confidence, that the opportunity cost associated with attending Tsunami, is not one that I am willing to pay.

This place gets two star ONLY because when we finally got our sushi, it was good. Not quite good enough for the price, but thats coming from someone not from the area. The service however was completely nonexistent. The staff is friendly, but are the most unattentive and incompotent I have encountered in a long time. They seem to have great drink specials, so it might be a nice place to go for late night drinks. But as a sushi restaurant, it's a failure. Go there to get drunk at night, not for a decent dining experience, at least if your drunk you won't care that the service sucks.

Decent atmosphere and drink prices. We came for the sushi special Wednesday night and were disappointed with the amount of time it was taking for our food to come out. We politely asked to speak with someone and the manager, John, came over to explain that they had trouble with some personnel and had quickly become swamped back in the kitchen. He graciously offered to comp all 3 meals at the table and apologized sincerely. He saved the reputation of the place in my eyes. When the food did arrive, it was delicious - best sushi I've had during my short time in Charleston. We will come back, no doubt about it! Try it out if you're in the area and looking for some quality rolls and good deals.

I'm going to second one of the other reviews of Tsunami. The sushi is not the freshest or the best I've ever had, but it is tasty and reasonably priced. Our service was fast and polite. And it was a very good location for us as we were staying just down the street. However, it was VERY loud inside this restaurant. And I'm pretty sure it turns into an enormous pickup joint after about 9 pm. So come early if you aren't into the party scene.

I went here for a friends birthday. They had great drink specials for blue moon. I would go back again! I can't comment on the sushi, but the atmosphere and drink specials were great!

Always went on Monday nights for 1/2 off for F&B night...our table service was always awesome but don't even bother going to the bar on Monday nights (can't speak on other nights)...the bartenders are horrible. Stood at the bar for TWELVE MINUTES waiting for 2 beers (and the bar wasn't 2 deep or very busy). The girl seemed more concerned with taking shots and the guy just blatantly ignored us. Other than that Tsunami is great!

Came here on a thursday night with a few people from the college of charleston since I was visiting for the weekend. I heard this place is normally a sushi bar or something of the like so my stars only represent the nightlife portion of the establishment. When I came here and saw this place I was a bit astonished because there were actually quite a bit of people in the place. It had a live DJ, a dedicated dance floor right in the middle of the action which kind of bottlenecked the back of the place where the tables were a pretty decent music selection. I must say the girls down here are beautiful by the way. The bar was alright, not much selection but that makes sense since this place is normally a sushi place. All in all not a bad place to start or end the night (depending on if this place is a pick up spot), when I come down here again I will probably be skipping this establishment at night, may come to grab some food though and see what that's like.

Sunday night before July 4th my guy and I were visiting Charleston. We wanted sushi. It was not crowed ed on a Sunday night. The crowd was def. young. I enjoyed the sushi very much, Priced very well. The bathroom was a bit messy but after a few bottles of flavored sake, I didn't mind. Our server was great!

We went there on my b-day and it was so good! We tried the my my mai sushi and loved it! We had the fried rice as well, and it was oh so good too. The atmosphere was really awsome!

Review of bar only. Small selection of Asian beers including Tiger, Sapparo, and Kirrin plus their light counterparts, and also sake and a full bar. The bartenders there were nice and there were two big screens over the bar showing espn and the NBA playoffs. The sushi looked ok, but didn't try it.

The sushi here is a bargain, especially compared to other places. We went here on a Sunday night at 5:30, getting both the happy hour specials and the 25% off for college students. The $9 three sushi happy hour deal is a steal - we ordered a second round. The Charleston sushi is a bit different, but delicious when dipped in soy sauce (some purists say you shouldn't, but with the Charleston, it elevates it to a new level of tastiness). The tuna and salmon rolls were good, although not overly flavorful. The California rolls had a stronger cucumber taste than I am used to - maybe cucumbers from the South just have more flavor? Our waiter was great, with helpful recommendations and even moved us away from a particularly loud table with a minimum of fuss. After pigging out, our total was about $28 - not bad for 8 rolls of sushi! All in all, a worthwhile visit. Although its maybe not the place to go if you are only in Charleston for a few days, it is definitely a good place to visit if you want some lighter fare.

Terrible service. I sat at the sushi bar and the gal who seated me only came by to take my order once and she didn't even give me a place setting or any soy sauce...I had to fend for myself. Instead of waiting around for her to come back, I just ordered from the sushi master and he seemed irritated that I didn't go through her instead. A group of about 8 people came to the restaurant area in the back and also didn't get seated. They decided to leave after 5 minutes since nobody helped them out. It's better to go here for a quick predrink at the bar.

  • M J.

The sushi here is average and not as fresh as one would hope. The first tip-off should have been that there is no japanese on the sushi menu. The second should have been that the waitress did not understand me when I asked for Nigori sake. I ordered all my favorites: Uni, Ika, Hotate, Amaebi, Hamachi and Toro. The Uni was artificially colored and off, the Ika was not fresh, the Hotate tasted slightly spoiled as did the Amaebi. The Hamachi and Toro were so-so. On the other hand, if you are looking to meet beautiful local women on a Monday, this is your place.

Very good sushi, doesn't blow you away, but it still yummy. The "best sushi roll ever" and the crab crunch are very good. Tuna Tartare is NOT GOOD. We love most all tuna tartare, but this one is horrible. Tempura is good unless you order it for take out, then it's cold and probably with average veggies.

HALF PRICE MONDAYS!!!!!! That's the only time I go, haha. You have to work at the market and bring your pay stub to get the discount though, but seriously, half price sushi? That's like my heaven. So every Monday night, this is where you find me. I have eaten a lotta lotta lotta sushi and this is definitely the best and my favorite from my adventures. (Plus, the Boy has friends here so free things are in order almost every time.) The Dude Where's My Crunch? (it's been renamed now but I can't remember it) and GMC rolls are my addiction. The Boy swears by The Best Sushi Roll ever. They also offer fried oyster rolls (How Charleston, I know) which are surprisingly good. The wait on Mondays is horrendous. Try to sit at the sushi bar so you'll get seated faster. During basketball/football season they project the games onto one of the walls so if you're a sports addict like the Boy and I, it's a definite plus. It's always all college students and that's obvious. We always see tons of people we know. But like I said, I've only been there on half price Mondays. EDIT:// I've found new addictions like crab salad and Red Dragon rolls. Also, I had one really terrible experience that I wanted to report even though generally the service is fine. Nothing special but not horrible. (Exactly what you should expect from college kids catering to college kids.) But one night my boss, me, and three other girls I work with went over there and were told there was like 20 min wait. Not bad. Like I said, the Boy has friends there so I went over to say hey to one of the sushi chefs who asked where I was sitting so he could bring me food. When I mentioned we hadn't sat down yet, he was like "I got you." and went and found the waitress for the sushi bar and, I assume, asked her if she minded if we sat there. He then waved us over to sit down. (And of course I thanked him a million times for going out of his way.) So we sit down and the waitress takes like 15 mins, literally, to come over. Cool, whatever, we just kinda randomly sat down anyways so we get it. Once she finally comes over she makes a snide comment about if we'd "just waited like everyone else" and continues with these comments all night, just kinda throwing them in with a smile on her face. It was the rudest that anyone has ever been to me. I understand it was a slight inconvenience for her, however, she could've said no and also, if she'd been nice, she would've gotten a kick-ass tip from five girls ordering nothing but sushi.

Great sushi place! I don't think I've ever had a bad dining experience here. The selection of rolls is phenomenal and they always taste so fresh! The crispy crab wontons are freaking amazing!! I'd go to Tsunami just for those. I've been here before with my significant other and also a group of friends and we've all left very satisfied. The wait staff is great and the atmosphere is nice. This place used to get pretty rowdy on Friday and Saturday day nights, but I hear that they are under new management now and it doesn't get that way anymore. On a side note, they used to have this awesome fish tank right when you walked in, they don't have it anymore so that kinda sucks.

Comments from our dinner party: "Sushi was meh. $15 bottle of wine was worth it." "We ordered 3 plates of crab rangoon. So good." "We had so much food and it really wasn't expensive at all."

$2.50 wells, $2 blue moons and a brand new staff who doesn't seem to know much about the menu...ok sushi but plenty of space to sit all night and catch up w company... I just feel bad for our waiter, he wasn't trained well at all. Too new for such a large party -

First off, let me say, best sushi in town. Always fresh, always on point. Now let me get to the good stuff. Ive been coming here for four years and theyve had food and bev night on mondays, but now its open to everyone! Half off pretty much their entire menu. So sushi, hibachi, tataki, you name it, half prics. So like I said, I've been coming here a while and I've always loved the food, but it wasnt until recently they took my experience from a four star to a five star. We started sitting at the sushi bar (that has new super comfy lounge seats) and met one of the sushi guys named Glenn. After chatting us up and getting to know us he found out my husband is going to Korea for a year and he pretty much has been taking care of us since. So not only is he giving us great service but encouraging us to try new things and broadening our sushi knowledge. My husband really didnt want to eat here anymore, not being a huge sushi fan, and now every monday until he leaves, we are here chowing down because of Glenn. So the customer service here is just amazing. I'd give it 10 stars! Tsunami and especially Glenn took our dining experience to the next level. I recommend them to anyone searching for a staff thats friendly and knowledgeable and food that is out of this world.

I couldn't be more disappointed at the food service and food in downtown charleston - if I could give zero stars... That'd be my review. This is my second visit and I've been here 2.5 hrs (with 6 friends). There are 4 empty tables and the entire sushi bar seating is empty. I've been waiting for my order: miso soup and veggie spring rolls. So... Q: will I be returning? - A: big, fat, "No!!" Instead drive 20 more minutes and look up Zen Asian fusion or lee lee's kitchen.

Let me start by saying the sushi is phenomenal. There is a huge selection of rolls to choose from, and all the ones I've had have been great. Happy hour prices are great with a slew of 1/2 price apps and rolls. The reason this place only gets 4 stars from me is the fact that their bathroom is a disaster. Every time I've been I've been grossed out. This is a pretty nice restaurant, and keeping the bathroom clean shouldn't be that big of a task.

I have read several reviews and it seems like this place has not gotten the best reviews, but I went with a friend this past Wednesday and the food and service was great! We both ordered the All you can eat sushi, and the rolls we both got were delicious. I also got a glass of wine since glasses were half off for happy hour and it went nicely with the sushi. Our waitress was very observant and she checked in and made sure we had everything we needed. I feel like Wednesday is a good night to go, and I hope to go back sometime soon.

The service was slow, and the food was okay. I had a veggie roll with avocado, mango and cucumber. The avocado was brown, which was not very appetizing. Other than that the sushi was good. When I told the waitress about the brown avocado, she just said "oh, okay." The seat of our booth was also all torn up.

Last month me and my boyfriend went to Tsunami-I ordered the asparagus roll and my boyfriend had the Chicken Katsu dinner. On the description of the sushi it listed the asparagus roll had masago garnished over the sushi. I was clueless about what masago was I figured because it was an "asparagus roll" it was vegetarian..come to find out masago was caviar-not a big fan. I politely tell the waitress I didn't know masago was caviar and I asked her if I can get it remade. I told her I was willing to pay for the first roll. The waitress walks over to the sushi chef and asked him to remake my order and loudly goes "how do you not know what it is? It's on the menu!". I was sitting right across from him. Me and other people heard him say this and needless to say I was livid. It wasnt what he said, it was how he said it. I told the waitress I heard him and if its that big of a deal to just cancel the order. She brought it out anyways. Her service was excellent and how she handled the situation was great. When I left I told the manager about what happened, quickly went to address the situation, and was willing to comp my next meal there. I'm not a big fan of complaining but I'm not gonna get disrespected at an establishment where I'm paying for their service either! I never took up on that offer. I decided to give Tsunami another shot since I was a regular and they had amazing sushi. They had $3 martinis for their happy hour--I recommend the flirtini and the cheesecake martini :) I ordered the asparagus roll (again, without the masago-god forbid..) and pot stickers. The waitress was very friendly, service was decent. As I said before, I was a regular at Tsunami. When that sushi chef incident happened I was ready to post a super negative review on here. I'm glad I went back yesterday. Their food is good as always, prices/portions are fair, and the atmosphere is upbeat. Ill continue being a customer here. I seriously do think the sushi chef they had that night needed an attitude adjustment though.

Sushi was good, service was alright. Everything is heavily discounted, a nice surprise for my husband and I, but it definitely brought in a very specific crowd. Basically if you enjoy college kids who act like they just discovered 311 for the first time and pound $2 beer specials- than this is the place for you.

    (3)
  • Kathy C.

Umm.. Not the best sushi or hibachi and the place tries too hard to be 'cool'. The sushi was only 'so so' and the hibachi was drowned in oil. The salad with house ginger dressing was the best part! The music is loud and it was difficult to get a feel for what 'vibe' they were trying to create.. This was our first time in Charleston, and being from NYC, we should have known to rely on trusty Yelp but alas we decided to chance it. Never again will we stray from Yelp!

I went with 2 friends during restaurant week and once the hostess seated us it took probably 10 minutes for our server to come over (they were not busy at all). She was apologetic and very nice but she was still pretty slow getting our drinks throughout dinner and she never told us there were happy hour specials. We were given their regular menu, restaurant week menu and Tuesday night all you can eat sushi menu - it was too much to choose from! All you can eat sushi is a good deal if you can eat a lot! We did the restaurant week specials and got a mix to share - the rainbow and crab crunch rolls (both were fresh and very good), chicken/shrimp/steak hibachi (this was good but the steak was overcooked - they did not ask how we wanted it cooked), veggie spring rolls (delish), chocolate lava cake (decadent) and fried cheesecake (tasted like fair food - I would suggest the lava cake over this one). Overall, it was good but not the best. There are many other sushi/hibachi places that are better.

Was not very impressed by our hostess. My sister and I walked in and noticed that there were plenty of open tables. However, we were told that there was a 15 min wait because the waiters were really busy. Not a problem. We went and sat at the bar where we were ignored for 10 min until the hostess came back and seated us in one of the empty seats we passed on our way to the bar. As my sister and I were waiting for service....two groups of four came into the establishment and were seated immediately...not ok. The only reason I gave two stars is because the drinks and appetizers we ordered were good, but that does not make up for my experience. Will not be returning.

Chicken katsu: not bad, kind of like American fried chicken with a very sweet teriyaki dipping sauce Rolls: I had the pink dragon, nemo and tempura. Quite amateur. Ingredients were sort of fresh. Udon: Huuuge bowl

Good, fresh and creative rolls. Nice variety of drinks. Service was efficient and accommodating, especially since my friend spilled three drinks and we both made a mess with the soy sauce. Spicy tuna sashimi was amazing- like ahi poke withe spicy mayo. The half baked roll was DOPE. Using baked salmon instead of rice to roll a spicy tuna roll- ingenious! Jalapeño poppers were ok, they were super spicy and I couldn't talk for about 5-7minutes After eating one. I wasn't a fan of the seafood dynamite- it was 80% crab stick and drenched in spicy mayo. I'd like to see more things wrapped in cucumber or anything but rice. But overall I was very happy! Final thought- The menu is a little difficult to navigate- some are on the paper menu, some on the formal menu. Weird.

Ok we stopped here with one of my wife's friends so that they could sit eat and talk with minimal noise. It worked well for our intent. Atmosphere was nice, not great but comfortable. Matched the prices they charged. The sushi we had was great and well presented, really liked the Krispy Wasabi roll. All in all the food was better then the atmosphere, waiting staff was a bit inattentive, but we really only had to wait for the Third beer which was only $2. So all in all I would go there again. Very reasonably priced with better than expected food. They could get rid of the TVs or put something Asian on TV... NHL playoffs doesn't fit the theme of this place. 3 stars for atmosphere 4 + for food..

They deals upon deals. Very good prices during happy hours. Regular price is pretty standard. Under $10 a roll of sushi. Ive had a handful of asian food while in charleston and im happy to say this place is the only one not ridden with a ton of sodium. I understand americans in the east coast love their salty asian food but most places made my tongue curl... If im in charleston and crave some japanese food. I'll come here. Service was good too!

Stay away from this place if you want authentic Japanese food. I'm in town for a girls weekend and we decided to stop here last minute for dinner. We should've followed our gut when we asked if there were hibachi tables and the guy told us "We make the hibachi orders in the back". They have a decent sushi menu and we enjoyed the specialty rolls we ordered: The Duffy, Nemo and Heartbreaker(has a kick). As for the hibachi entrees, they were a complete miss. I ordered the chicken and shrimp entree. The pieces of chicken were sweet and a bit dry and looked like something you would get from the mall food court. Definitely not fresh and looked reheated. The shrimp was rubbery and obviously heated in the microwave. The sautéed veggies were very salty. The "hibachi rice" was NOT what we expected and a complete letdown. It was essentially a scoop of brown rice in a bowl. All of our entrees came with a heaping serving of white sauce probably because they were expecting us to drown our food in it to take away the nasty taste. Our server was fine and checked in on us as needed. This is obviously a college spot and while it's fine for sushi, if you are looking for an authentic hibachi spot, steer clear. If you don't care and just want to feed your Asian food craving with no regard to quality, then go right ahead!

I really enjoyed the sushi here! it was delicious. high quality sushi. The ginger salad was really good too. They were short ok waiters so it was kind of crazy and a longer wait for your food. But other than that I recommend this place to get some yummy sushi. My fave is the G.M.C !!

So I met some friends from out of town here. They'd heard about it from college friends. I wasn't thrilled with the choice, but they were visiting, so I sucked it up and drove downtown. I have to admit the service and food was 10x better than I remembered from years ago. It's not super fresh sushi or the best I've ever had, but it was tasty and reasonably priced. Just don't expect to have a conversation. This place is even louder than most sports bars.

This place has fallen off the deep end since the last time I've been here. This restaurant needs to retrain all their workers in customer service. Although we didn't have a bad experience, our waiter was definitely not at his best. Food was good. Everything else was mediocre.

  • Alexia C.

Went here last night for the all you can eat sushi. It was pretty good. Had some normal sushi choice but after reading the menu for the all you can eat selections, I realized that it was just different variations of crab, shrimp and spicy tuna. The rolls where good but not to many differences. For the price tho i would definitely go again. They also had ?$2.50 ying ling which was pretty good. I liked the feel of the restaurant.

It wasn't my choice to come here, rather it was my roommate's as we were celebrating her birthday. Our server... I don't even remember her name but she sucked. I am a server so I understand being agitated when you're busy and you have several tables asking you to return poorly made drinks; however, our server was not busy and had an attitude the entire night. I normally tip 25-30% but I barely left her 15% because she was so careless. We went on this new half-off sushi night and I was happy to see my one favorite thing at Tsunami's was on the menu--- that being the Heartbreaker roll. On previous occasions, I would only order this roll and for excellent reason. It's supposed to be this flavorful blend of tastes that just work together in your mouth. When brought to me this night, it tasted as if the rice had been watered down, the spicy tuna had been watered down- everything was lacking tuna and I couldn't even bear to dip it into the poorly made ponzu sauce as I usually do at most restaurants. I don't think I'll be coming back to the downtown location. The only pleasant thing about this place was the fact I got to sit right next to the dirty fish tank.

Joey our waitress was so awesome and super friendly! She always made sure we were taken care of. Plus, the chicken hibachi was so yummy and you got what you paid for!

Located on East Bay, I was partial to Asian food so as to not deviate too far from the ethnic" food I have locally...this place did not disappoint. But neither did it "wow". I had the salmon hibachi, $16. Grilled and perfectly seasoned fillets of salmon, special dipping sauce, sauteed zucchini, carrots and onions. And a bowl of "fried" rice. I was expecting other ingredients to which I am accustomed when I see reference made to "fried rice". The portion was hearty and I had to pack about half of it for a midnight snack. The accompanying house salad was tasty with a wonderful ginger dressing. I was the only one sitting in my section near the window facing East Bay, and wondered if people hang up their hats early in this town on Sundays. The air conditioning was noisily vibrating and competing with the sounds of P!NK belting the explicit version of "Perfect". Unfortunately, Tsunami Charleston was a little "less" than that.

I have been eating at Tsunami for many years but recently had a few bad experiences, particularly with to-go orders. In the past when I dine-in, the sushi has been very fresh, but I was very disappointed when I opened my to-go box at home to find watered down ingredients and fish that clearly had not been kept at the temperature it should be. The overall order was very skimpy and not what I am used to experiencing in the restaurant. The lettuce in my house salad had brown spots and after one bite I had to throw it away because there was no avoiding the bad lettuce. To top all of this off, there was a little piece of aluminum foil wrapped into my sushi roll.

Went with my girlfriend on new years eve and had all you can eat sushi. Sushi is amazing, many rolls to choose from. great price as well.

TERRIBLE service. We didnt have silverware and had to ask a couple different servers until we finally got some. Also, everyone in our group was served except for one. They weren't served until 20 minutes later when everyone else had already finished. The issue wasn't addressed until it was brought it up to the waiter. Not coming back.

I would complain about service but there wasn't any. Took 10 min to see waiter. He obviously hated his career path because it took him 20 minutes to take our food order. We didn't order, just asked for check for awful drinks and left. If you are going, sit at sushi bar. Much better service. We would have probably spent well over $100 but this ahole waiter got a dollar.

Who knew Charleston knew how to party on a Thursday night? This review is for the nightlife and sushi bar at Tsunami. Let's start off with the sushi. I didn't expect much since I was in Charleston (known for southern/comfort food). But Chef Masa knows what he's doing. I greeted the sushi chef and ordered omakase style, even though there isn't omakase on the menu. It was late, I was tipsy, so I just asked for something crazy. My two plates of sushi came out crazy all right, crazy good! Chef Masa brought out a Tuna Tartare, a Flamin' Filet, and a roll that had cucumber in place of rice. The food was amazing and the presentation was top notch. Sushi and shots down, I was ready to dance. On to the party. DJ Phamtastik and the MC, Terry H., can throw it down. I was amazed at the amount of people out on a Thursday, I guess $1 Blue Moons help. But the real entertainment was the crowd jamming to the DJ's wicked mixes. With Monster Drinks in hand, DJ Phamtastik spins old school hip-hop, mash-ups, electronic, and whatever mood the crowd is in. Tsunami was one of my favorite stops during my visit to Charleston and I can't wait to go back to see what Chef Masa has to slice up!

Service sucks. Definitely better options as far as sushi goes. I seriously stared at my drink for 15 minutes at the corner of the bar, then I went to just get it after watching out server neglect it for 15 minutes, I was told I could not have the drink that I ordered and had to wait for the server to bring it.....nothing better than a warm martini and mediocre sushi. Dancing is fun there with a good group.

My husband and I ate here on our honeymoon. Compared to the prices of sushi back home, it is extremely well priced. Their "loaded" rolls were on average $8-9 each vs the $14-19 rolls here in Knoxville. The fish was fresh and I liked the atmosphere. My favorite thing we ordered was the Sea Biscuit appetizer. I still think about it! They also had great happy hour specials. We will definitely eat here again when we are back in town.

It's o.k., but really, just o.k. I have eaten here at least twice and each time the sushi has been a little less than thrilling. The temperature, texture, and complexity of the rolls are lacking. I would like to give it 2.5. The atmosphere looks enticing and they have a great fish tank, however, this is a little uncomfortable when you are eating fish. However, my BIGGEST issue with this place is the overwhelming amount of different music feeds happening simultaneously. They have electronic music playing in the front, a TV with sports in the bar, and different music pumping into the back of the restaurant. All of which can be heard at the same time in the main dining area. It is just uncomfortable to the senses. A little pricey as well. The Tsunami in Mt. Pleasant is very good, this one misses the mark a little.

Not my favorite sushi, but it's reasonably priced and not bad. Got the My My Mai roll, which was way too fishy. How can something taste dried out and drenched in mayo at the same time? I did like the cream cheese crab wontons, which were tasty and you can't beat $1 blue moons on Thursday nights.

The restaurant's name says it all- Tsunami aka natural disaster. This was the first time visiting Charleston for my boyfriend and I and we were excited to enduldge in some exotic food. We were drawn inside after seeing a sign out front for $2 Yuenglings. Mistake number one. Any restaurant that is advertising cheap specials like that should belong on a college campus, not alongside high classy restaurants. We fell for the trap and figured we would still give it a chance. After putting our names down for another restaurant that had over an hr wait, this seemed like a good alternative with absolutely no wait and plus; I had to use the restroom, ain't nobody got time for that. The storm of a night proceeded as follows: 1) no one greeted us at the door 2) It was incredibly dark with loud music (felt more like a club) 3) After placing an order for appetizers and a meal, we questioned whether we should just get up and leave 4) being the nice guests that we are, we talked ourselves into staying and giving it a chance still 5) my boyfriend came back from the bathroom utterly disgusted 6) our meals finally arrived but o wait, where are our napkins and utensils? We had to ask our waitress to bring us them and ask where our appetizers went. She apologized for the wait and said it was due to a private party and that the kitchen was backed up. This was quite funny because we could count on one hand the amount of tables that were occupied. Overall this was an absolute let down and we will never be returning or recommending it to anyone. I hope management reads these reviews to improve their operations and staff. The food quality was so poor, a house of drunken fraternity brothers could whip up a better meal at 2am than the chewy chicken on our plates.

This place is not worth going to. Do not waste your time. Bathroom : mens/ woman's. Both were overflowing and no one ever fixed them. After being told. Service is Horrible all around. It took 35 mins to get a drink. Apps came out late drinks still hadn't arrived. Waitress said bar was busy. I looked over and there were 4 ppl at the bar. Friend of mine ordered a ginger ale . Apparently they don't have ginger ale so just mix coke and sprite and try to pass that as ginger ale. If that's how they handle a simple soft drink order and bathroom situation I would hate to know what they do while handling raw fish. I ordered a fried dish and to know surprise it was also horrible. How do you kill a fried dish?

Used to live in Charleston for several years and I always enjoyed half price Mondays and as I am sure they have changed some things like everywhere in Chucktown the food is always fresh and the service is friendly. Its hard being in a southern town to give you an upscale lounge feel of the big city but with a hole in the wall bar atmosphere this place does a great job of it and the food is good as well!!

Was here with friends on a Friday night - towards the middle of the evening when we actually met up with them after hitting a few other places. Although it wasn't that busy, at all (our group was over half the joint that night), it was a great place to hang out. Decent bottles of sake for 8, Stellas for 2 - great place to have a few drinks. Sushi bar is open late, great if you need a later night snack.

Japanese in Charleston. I think this will probably be the best you can find out here. Small rolls, they were dry and expensive. No more Japanese food anymore in Charleston for me. Looks like your typical Kabuki's with the bar and non-Japanese sushi chefs. I've had wayyyyyyyy better.

They should rename this place to "Transformer" - Tsunami is disguised as a hip sushi place that really just wants to be another dive bar/club for the local college. We had 3 different rolls and each plate had 6 rolls which is smaller then we were used to but the price was also smaller. The sushi itself wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing either. It wasn't the arrangement per se just that the fish didn't taste as fresh or possibly as good a quality as we had experienced before. Around 8:30 they had someone checking IDs, the service went completely in the tank and they started removing tables in favor of more standing room for the bar. The overall decor is on par with most sushi places, with some trendy set ups, but if fell flat on its face when we went. We aren't college kids but we aren't elderly either but once 9PM hit the entire place filled with college aged kids and they weren't ordering sushi. If you want a nice place to get a drink and check out the 20 year olds, this might be a fit but if you want good sushi or even a relaxing dinner, this is definitely not the place.

I'll start by saying most of the bad reviews for this place are oddly accurate. My whole experience here can be summarized with one question: Where are the hidden cameras and cast of Bar Rescue? Terrible service- The staff needs some serious training on meal coursing, dining etiquette and the basics or working in hospitality and the food industry. No host to greet us at the door nor was there a sign telling us to seat ourselves. Our waitress did not even introduce herself let alone provide us some guidance on the menu and specials. She did not provide us proper utensils until the food had already came out. The sushi I ordered came 10 mins after the main course. Why is it called the Sushi Starter? Low Quality Food- The Sushi was alright. Nothing spectacular but it was probably the only halfway decent part about my experience here. The Hibachi was disgusting. I could have done a better job cooking the veggies on a hot plate in my dorm room while in college. I don't think I could even call the protein that came with the veggies chicken. Again, college dorm room food could be better. I am not a picky eater but I did not eat 1/3 of the food on my plate. Asked for the check and got out as fast as possible before I caught some food borne illness. Cleanliness and Atmosphere- I guess there is probably a reason why the place is so dimly lit with loud music. It's so you cant see what is making the floor sticky or hear the soles of your shoes peel off of the floor. The decor in this place needs some updates as it appears it is trying way to hard to be cool. Open black painted ceiling showing all of the air ducts and cob webs. Lighting and decor on the walls could be found in the discount/broken section of IKEA. If it is supposed to be a dive, let it be a dive and advertise as such. The bathroom was the worst part! I have seen subway station bathrooms in better shape. Broken tiles, leaking pipes, graffiti on the walls and a sopping wet slippery floor. Safe to say I will never be returning to this restaurant or any other Tsunami Restaurant in the area. How is this place still in business and next to some very nice places nearby? I hope to see a new name or "under new management" sign out front the next time I visit. Either that or I see it on an episode of Bar Rescue. DO NOT EAT HERE!

Awesome specials, needless to say the sushi isn't fresh... And the service just down right sucks. There's only one good server bless her heart.. Short cute little blonde girl. Korean girl I've had her twice.... She's awful.

Tsunami has a great AYCE event each Wednesday night for $15.99. You are limited to a list of eligible rolls, however there are many premium rolls available. I've been several times for the AYCE. The first two times I was blown away by the thickness of the cuts of fish. However, on the last time, the pieces of fish were much thinner. I'm not sure if this is a cost savings move or a different chef. Regardless, if the cut is thin, it is AYCE so just order more. The taste is still great and I hope to be back soon. Try the Pink Dragon....love it! If the cuts of fish return to what I was used to on my first 2 visits, then my rating will move to 5 stars.

1/2 of Sushi on Wednesdays was awesome! Sushi was great. Service was okay, friendly. Had the Heartbreaker roll, Mango roll, and Last Sushi Roll along with some nigiri. Everything tasted fresh, loved it.

Definitely a college place. We were walking along The Bay looking for some seafood that wasn't outrageously priced (saved that for another night) and found Tsunmai on a Thursday, during their awesome happy hour. All you can eat (sushi and rolls) for $15. Drinks are strong and decently priced as well. Loud place with a bar.

Wandered in to this place reluctantly since we did not see anyone in eating. Found out most were in the back. Food is good and they ran a drink special the night we were there. On down side it was very loud with music blaring. Think this is more of a bar than restaurant.

Came here on a not too busy early Friday evening for some sushi noms. The place was more than half empty, but we waited 20 minutes to be seated. Ok... Our waitress takes another 5+ minutes to even appear, sets down drinks at the table next to us, says "Hi, I'll be with you in a few" over her shoulder, and then walks away. She finally arrives to take our drink order and walks away in the middle with no explanation, and returns after a few minutes to get the rest of the order. She brings our drinks, takes food orders, and then disappears again. We had no utensils, thus, no napkins, and having been raised properly, I know to put my napkin on my lap as soon as my drink arrives. My manners were being tested by my patience. Fine, we'll get the hostess to find us some utensils and chopsticks. We FINALLY get our food. When the disappearing waitress comes by to check on us, I remind her that I still didn't get my eel sauce with my sushi. Plus, we never had soy sauce on our table, we mentioned that to whomever it was that dropped off our food. She says she'll bring it right out. Nope. No one ever brought the eel sauce or the soy sauce. We had to steal the soy sauce from the table next to us before it got bussed - which didn't happen until after we left despite that table leaving a full half hour before us.... Gross. The food was good, so the place gets more than one star, but then again, we were starving, so cardboard with wasabi would have been appetizing. Maybe being from a place that's go-go-go all the time (DC), I'm used to prompt service, but regardless of origin, there is no excuse for NON service, nor for leaving a table dirty for such an extended period of time, especially when there was a crowd of people waiting to be seated as we left.

We went in the other day to have a couple of bevvies after having dinner elsewhere. This is a great little bar that features live music. The service was pretty good. My friends who live in the area said the sushi is very good, so next time, we'll definitely give that a try.
