The buffet is amazing, and the food is very legit. It's not "touristy" at all, and it's very popular with the Indian community. Their yogurt curry is incredibly rich, and they have a coconut chutney I've not had elsewhere. The staff it's friendly and helpful, and made sure the steamers were full of whatever we wanted to eat. Also, cardamom spiced iced tea. You HAVE to try it!

My favorite Indian food in Charleston. I missed this place for the 2 years i lived in NYC too. The dum aloo is good- the cream sauce is delicious. I wish they still stuffed the potatoes with raisins and spices, but it seems they have now switched to an egg-based stuffing. The palek paneer is great as well. Service is fine.

It was ok. I had the malai kofta, and the sauce was creamy, but not extremely flavorful. It tasted like it might be warmed-over. Also, I asked for medium hot, and there was no heat to the spices at all. My husband got goat vindaloo, India-hot, and he said it tasted more like tandoori seasoning, maybe medium-hot. He did say the goat was perfectly cooked. My kofta was well-made, too, aside from seasoning.

Consistently great Indian food. My girlfriend loves this place as they serve some dishes that remind her of her time in Southern India where the food is a little spicier. The young man waiter is excellent and can answer any question you have about the menu. I love the Mixed Tandoori!! Had it the first time at a Sunday buffet. Go on a Sunday and try lots of things to find your favorite. I have also tried Nirlep, Bollywood, and Bombay. This is far and away my number 1.

I like a Taste of India a lot. Its among the best Indian in the area and their buffet has a great variety, is well priced, and is pretty darn tasty! The owner is very nice too.

So I just moved to Charleston, wanted Indian food. The food here was awesome, but the service sucked open ass. I rarely EVER tip under $5, even at buffets, and especially not when I am expensing it on my corporate credit card. I gave them $3. I ran out of beverage several times, then when I requested a refill, it took FOREVER to get one. Maybe it's because I was dining alone? IDK. Whatever. The variety and quality of food was exemplary, but the subpar service really ruined it for me. Who knows if I'll go back. I'm TOTALLY an easy person to please; just keep my drink full!

*YUMMY* Decided to try this place after reading all the great reviews!.. and WOW! I took my husband and baby girl, ordered two of our favorites, Chicken Madras & Lamb Vindaloo, and along with some tasty bread and were utterly impressed. Very fresh and flavorful, all white meat chicken too, the lamb was soo tender also! I had had the Roti thinking it was like chapati bread, it wasn't, yet still very delicious, hot and moist!... and they were so nice and hospitable with us and especially our baby, they even spoiled her a bit with dessert!

I have eaten at a bunch of Indian restaurants up and down the east coast and this is one of my favorites. The food is consistently great and the staff is friendly. I try to eat here as often as possible. It's true that the atmosphere is nothing to write home about, but the food is so great, who cares?

Typical Americanized Indian restaurant. Went there for the buffet. The selections were good and well prepared but lacked the spice and pizazz of other mid-priced place like this. Would not go back for buffet but may try their other selections. Wait staff was a bit disorganized.

Great food. Came into Charleston for business, and didn't expect to find a good Indian restaurant. Then I saw the reviews for this place, and decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised to see they had Onion Bhaji, which I haven't had since a recent trip to India, and it was very fresh. My usual entree, Chicken Tikka Masala had good flavor, and was delievered hot to my table. My only disappointment was that they didn't have Rasmalai, but hopefully they'll have it the next time I go back.

I love LOVE indian food, and anytime I am anywhere close to Taste of India I make a point to stop in. The food is awesome, and they go out of their way to make an entree Vegan if you want them to which is RARE. That gives them huge props in my book. The chana saag made vegan style is awesome, and the rice that comes with every dish is delicious. The mulligatawny soup is also ace. The only thing keeping them from a 5 star rating is that the service is very VERY slow, every time I've been its taken just to get the check. I don't find the interior to be that bad, a little bit dark but it matches the decor. I've heard the lunch buffet is awesome but I have yet to have it. Check them out!

Awesome food and reasonably priced wine. When I moved to Charleston I was worried about finding quality Indian food, but Taste of India has reassured me. The food was all delicious, especially the chicken tikka and the yellow dal. Service isn't great and the interior of the restaurant is dark and lacking, but the food makes you forget about. Apparently they have a lunch buffet, which I will definitely be checking out soon. Oh and they had quite a few bottles of wine for $20.

Recommended by a friend after a long drive into town for work, I decided to give it a try. Very glad I did. I called in my order, and within 15 minutes it was ready and waiting for me. I decided to go with everyone's recommendation of the chicken tikka masala and I was extremely happy! I would have liked more rice with the amount of tikka masala they gave you, but I have absolutely no complaints about the meal! There was plenty of food for two meals. I will definitely be back again the next time I'm in town!

Ambience is good. Service is good but food delivery after order was bit delayed. We ordered Kadai Paneer with a Naan and Roti. Curry tasted really awesome. But the quantity was too little to our surprise. Well visit again though. Prices are reasonable.

Dark and dreary is the atmosphere. Slow service. Was pretty much dead on a Saturday at dinner time. We tried both chicken and veggie dishes both were extremely bland. The "spicy" dish had some heat but zero seasoning or flavor. Even the raita was bland. Won't be back and don't recommend. Hopefully Charleston has better Indian than this to offer.

Found myself craving Indian food on the way home from visiting friends in Walteboro on a Friday afternoon Had never been here. Don't eat Indian often and frankly, last visit to Nirlip had been disappointing. Quickly checked reviews here for both and decided to stop here for takeout. Food was EXCELLENT! Stopped at about 6pm, so they were just gearing up for dinner. Restaurant was clean, staff very welcoming and friendly. Ordered chicken tikka masala, lamb curry and vegetables jalfreezi (sp?). Everything was medium spiced as I asked at least to my taste, sauces were light, and fresh, flavors popped, meat was high quality and tender, overall an excellent meal. I'd like to try the buffet to go at $4.99 a lb sometime.

Absolutely the worst experience I have had at a restaurant. The food was ok. Not great. But not bad for the area. But one of the managers had a bad attitude. He would not accept the yelp deal. Said he needed a printed copy. We were traveling and explained could not print anything. He would not budge. I had to leave my family at the restaurant and drive to a fedex print center to print the coupon. I left there without leaving a tip which I have never done before. Do not eat here. Unless shitty service is what you crave.

Quickly became my favorite. Great buffet but dinner is better. Owner always seems happy to see us. Much better than Nirlip in my opinion,

Just wanted to say, being an Indian, I officially endorse this place above all other couple of Indian restaurants we have around in Charleston. Appreciate the service, especially Sanjay who makes us feel homely, right from yelling from the other side of the hall :-) Highly recommended especially when they have their huge Sunday buffets. Tell them to make it spicy as in for the traditional taste of India. Mango Lassi is a must have!

I really wish I had read Josh S's comments BEFORE going to the Taste of India on Savannah Hwy!!! We basically had the exact same service... The food is ok but the service was absolutely horrible! We spent an hour and didn't receive one drink refill or any service. Finally after an hour we left and took our food home 10 minutes later (yep, over an hour for vegetables and bread)! Like I said, the food is ok at best but the service is absolutely horrible. I have NEVER left a restaurant early until tonight... over an hour is just plain ridiculous.

Not the best food I've had, nirlep is better. Very rude owner and staff. Seated 20 mins before our order was taken. Take your business somewhere where it's appreciated.

Excellent food ! - not greasy at all and for a vegetarian - the right combination of healthy and tasty - my choice for Indian in Charleston - lunch buffet is really good and amazing value for the money

Went on a Monday evening. Dining room was maybe 1/3 full, but it also appeared they were doing a brisk take-out business. I started with the samosas. The pastry was done fairly well; it resembled pie crust in texture and taste. The filling was nice. They put in some spice, instead of just deep-frying potato in pastry. I thought this was nice. I ordered the chicken curry (medium spicy) and garlic naan. The curry was good, but I think I could have gone a little hotter. The rice was cooked well. They used what I think was dry, chopped garlic on the naan and a little too much, at that. It was also a little salty, even for Indian food. I only had water to drink, but refills came fairly frequently. Service was generally prompt. I think the kitchen might have been a little slowed given the quantity of take-out orders. I was going to get a lamb dish, but it's fairly obvious they had recently raised the prices on all of their lamb dishes, given the discrepancy between the menu with which I was presented and that which I read online. I wanted to give 3.5 stars, but I decided to round up.

Among the best Indian in Charleston. Do yourself a favor and get it to go-- the service is even worse than the sad, outdated decor.

Great Indian food; in my opinion the best in town. Service is sometimes on the slow side, but my fiancé and I go regularly and have always enjoyed it!

This place is near my house, and I've been meaning to try it out for a while now. Let me preface by saying that I'm not any sort of expert of Indian cuisine. It's my favorite type of food, and I've eaten at many Indian restaurants in the US, but I have not been to India nor have I been invited for a meal with an Indian family. I'll focus my review on food and service. As most Yelpers know - you can have the best food at the most hole-in-the-wall places. The atmosphere at Taste of India was lacking, but that only added to my excitement that this could be a hidden gem. The food was average. I would compare the food to an average ethnic/chain restaurant in a smaller city - nothing to write home about and nothing original. The flavors of what I had seemed to be very dumbed down and bland - dull and way too sweet. My meal was chicken tikka masala. The chicken was great - perfectly cooked. The sauce, however, seemed to have been heated/reheated many times - making an overpowering tikka masala "reduction." The basmati rice was huge, a sign that it had been sitting in the back for a while - overcooking. They also add a ton of snow peas to their rice which added a lot of flavorless, textureless mush to the rice (think: overcooked Mexican restaurant rice). I was charged $2.95 for a small side of to-go rice that I asked for. Considering there was about five times more sauce than rice served with my meal, I didn't think that asking for a bit of extra rice would warrant the additional charge ... oh well. The service was appalling. There were only two people serving, but not that many guests in the restaurant. I'm very patient and have respect for understaffing because you never know the restaurant's situation that night. This was not the case for me - my waitress (possibly owner) made eye contact with me many times throughout the evening, as if she acknowledged that I was asking for service, but continued doing her non-critical tasks (cleaning up, folding napkins, etc). At one point, I was beginning to think that I was on an episode of What Would You Do about ridiculous service at a restaurant. It was just an awkward situation in general: I knew they knew I was there, and they showed signs that they obviously weren't busy, but yet nothing happened. It completely baffled me. This was a sad review to write, and I rarely write a negative review. I'm a very easily appeased person, but this was a disappointment altogether. I probably won't go back.

The food is okay, a little bit grease for people who want to eat healthy. Just want to tell the owner of the restaurant to update their website. I dont want to call to call to see if they have buffet today or not, so I checked their website. However, all the information on their website is not useful at all.

I have been here about 10 times. They have some real tasty indian food. I like the vegetable samosas, chicken tika masala (medium spice), sag paneer (medium spice), also the breads and naans are good.Nice staff.

I recently visited this location of Taste of India (I believe there is one that opened on Sam Rittenberg Blvd recently) with my friends on a weekday lunch. I was nervous because I'd always gone to Nirlep. Here are the differences in my opinion: Taste of India has better service (more friendly), a nicer atmosphere (looks cleaner/newer), gulab jamun for their lunch buffet, and garlic on their naan for their lunch buffet. BUT, they have less variety for their lunch buffet. I also think that Nirlep does chicken tikki masala a bit better, but that may just be a personal taste preference. Nirlep's chicken tikki masala is a bit creamier, and I like that. I also like that Nirlep has samosas for their lunch buffet, but I hate that Nirlep doesn't have gulab jamun or garlic naan for their lunch buffet! So to conclude, if you're bringing a friend or a date to try Indian food for the first time and you know they're okay with hole in the wall atmospheres, go to Nirlep. They taste better and have more variety. If you're with or ARE someone that will get really put off by a crappy atmosphere and less than amiable service, go to Taste of India. I believe Taste of India is also a tiny bit cheaper for the lunch buffet, but maybe only by $1 if I remember correctly? Hope this helped y'all!

Worst food I have ever eaten. The service and ambience is really bad. Food tastes nothing like Indian food. Added to that, the food is pretty expensive for an Indian restaurant. Don't visit this place.

  • Nay B.

Food was good, not amazing but the service was awful! Two of us shared an app, a veggie entree and naan. By their attitude, the entire wait staff (3) was seriously bothered by the fact we shared one entree and only drank water. We were ignored and basically laughed at when we said we were done and wanted our check. The young girl was even audacious enough to ask if we wanted two checks (we didn't) then laugh. I wouldn't want to support a business that's so rude.

I've tried the few Indian restaurants in area, and this was definitely the best. The first time I went in and got take out, I was a bit put off. But, I went recently for the lunch buffet and had a pretty nice experience. The food was really tasty. My grandpa couldn't stop raving about how tender the chicken was. Service was minimal but it was a buffet, so no complaints there. The restaurant itself is pretty small but wasn't unpleasant.

Decent lunch spot, I am satisfied with the quality and variety among the buffet. Always leave full when I come here :)

Malai Kofta. Win. This place is great. Inconsistent at times but if you like Indian then this is what you want. Their buffet can be pretty awesome as well. Especially for the price. We drive 35 minutes once every couple weeks to get our fix. If they were in MtP we'd be there every other day (gotta moderate, ya know?)

Loved the buffet alot of food varieties. We went on sunday and it was a full house. Clean and inviting. Friendly staff

Was our waiter loaded with Lithium or some other psychotropic agent? Don't know but he sure was spaced out and had a flat affect. Food was tasty but not worth the wait quite frankly. There is another just across the HWY and they have servers who actually move their facial muscles a bit. Food is of equal quality. Service is faster out of the kitchen.

  • K J.

Dinner was delicious. All of our entrees were awesome. Samosas were great! I gave four stars because of some uneven seasoning on pakoras. Otherwise, our entire meal was on point. We ordered different levels of spice and they all came as ordered. Our son's was ordered mild and was full of flavor without too much heat. The service was courteous, friendly, and efficient.

  • AJ G.

The food and personal service here is always very good but seldomly to they get the order right. I always place to-go orders to keep the smell of indian food from saturating my clothes but its either the speed at which they write down my order or how quickly they get me off the phone that's responsible for inaccuracy. The lunch buffet is a good value and the food is always fresh.

  • Amy Yvonne H.

Service was not very good at all but food was ok. I will try this place again because you never know if maybe just what you ate wasn't good but what we did have was not that flavorful & felt very unhealthy from so much grease and such. The server didn't speak good English & all the tables were annoyingly wobbly. For the price, I don't think it was worth it. I will give it one more shot though. My recommendation is look around for somewhere else first.

Taste of India is really good, but the Indian restaurant on King St. in Charleston was better... or maybe I wasn't so snobby when I was 17.

Very good first time experience. Went here for the weekend lunch buffet. Good selection, especially the tandoori mixed grill, which included full white-meat chicken chunks...a nice healthy option! Also, the chili chicken was incredible!

I had Taste of Indian food at a wedding this past weekend and my boyfriend and I think it is the best Indian food we have ever had. Coming from Chicago, and it being an Indian wedding, we heard from many of the Indians that it was one of the best they ever had. I was even more amazed that it was catered at the beach, so the fact it was buffet style and the best we ever had, I cant imagine what the food at the restaurant tastes like. We had several appetizers, Chicken tikka masala, and a lamb rogan josh, and very yummy gulub jamaan. We highly recommend it!

Food was good. the service was friendly but really slow. There was only one waiter for about seven tables.

Definately enjoyed the authentic indian food. The resturant itself could use some work.

  • Amanda A.

Pretty fair, overall. Atmosphere not great, but nice and quiet. Food is good, but lacking the strong, Indian flavors we were looking for. Seemed dumbed down or Americanized.
