One of the best breakfast restaurants I've been to. Not a fancy place but varied menu with many homemade dishes. Lunch items available too- we had one breakfast and one lunch. My corn beef hash was a crispy skillet-like dish with potatoes, peppers, onions, and pieces of corned beef. Excellent. Other dish was a chicken quesadilla which was also very tasty. Specials included shrimp and crab dishes which sounded good too. Friendly and helpful service too. Look forward to returning.

Had a great breakfast there! The place is great and the location easy to get too Expect to wait a bit on the weekends... But that's ok!

Sunrise Bistro is a hidden gem, far far away from the hustle and high prices of downtown Charleston. For my breakfasts I had corned beef hash and sampled my boyfriend's 3 meat shrimp and grits. Corned beef hash was probably not as yummy as I had hoped, although quite a treat. In my opinion, there was not enough corned beef and too many onions. 3 meat shrimp and grits was super yum. I loved that they did not go cheap on the gravy. Although it wasn't exactly a gravy, it was more of a southern flavored queso sauce. In either case absolutely delicious.

This is a great place to stop by if you're headed to Angel Oak. The food was delicious and the staff was helpful and made suggestions, which is always welcome.

Yummy breakfast food, very accommodating staff, and they have almond milk!!!

Overall adequate. Exactly the fare you would expect. Reasonably well done. Very heavy handed with salt. Some dishes so salty they are barely edible. Staff a little pokey for the price. Too many tables for building size. Going to restroom is like being a pinball.

Food was great and service was prompt and accommodating (I had a table of picky children!). Agree with other reviewers, has a great, laid-back vibe. The wait was pretty long even though we called ahead and there's only a few chairs outside and it gets hot but otherwise had a great experience. Definitely brunch worthy!

I have eaten here a few times, food Is ok, but the coffee is always cold, or not hot enough. It is kept in containers that just keep it warm. You also have to get your own. Bacon is always greasy does not taste good. They seem to try and rush you out, I guess because it's a small place. I may go back in a year or so, but no rush. Frank G

Great food. Friendly, fast service. I like that they have a self serve coffee bar. You can doctor up your coffee however you like and choose a huge mug or an average sized one. If I had read about this, I would have not thought it would add to the breakfast experience, but it did. We had been up since 3 a.m. by the time we got there for breakfast and it was nice to not have to wait for coffee to come when the waitress was really busy. Overall great place. Try the grits bowl!

Breakfast was fabulous to say the least. You will find everything tasteful here. It was a packed house and I am sure it stays packed. We had a party of 4 and we all loved it, we will return

A great place to grab breakfast and not just due to the lack of viable breakfast options on Johns Island. A varied menu that has something for everyone including kids. A bottomless cup of coffee helps on those nights you burned on both ends. They open at 9am on Sunday and, if you're not there by 9:20, expect a short wait. It's a small restaurant, on a small island, but it is worth it. Enjoy!

Breakfast and lunch only here, but the list of options is long! I love the bagel with lox, but there is plenty on the menu for everyone. The atmosphere is quaint and cheery. You serve your own coffee which personally i like. I only wish there was more seating and an outdoor patio.

This place is legitimately awesome. Real chill atmosphere, great service and delicious food & coffee. I had the lox bagel. Fresh lox, flakey bagel and lots of delicious cream cheese. Also we had the grits bowl!! Straight amazing. Couldn't have asked for more. This a must go.

My wife and I consistently try breakfast and brunch all over Charleston and Mt. Pleasant and Sunrise is as good as it gets. I don't think you can get a better breakfast anywhere in town. On top of that the prices are really fair and Jessica and the staff are an absolute delight. The best bacon in town, the best grits (pepper jack), and house biscuits that are out of this world, what else could you ask for? Some other highlights include breakfast pizza, breakfast burrito, house bagels and open face omelet's. I have been here at least 50 times now and I have never been disappointed and I have also had the best breakfast of my life. You really can't go wrong. I don't get a chance to have lunch here as much as I do breakfast but when I have it has been excellent. Just like everything else it is always fresh and delicious. I especially like the chicken salad and the herb bred. This place is truly a neighborhood gem with a real community feel and really one of the reasons we love the island so much. I wouldn't trade it for the world!

Never had a bad meal here, very tasty breakfast and lunch menu here! Love the breakfast burritos w grits if I was going to pick a favorite. Outdoor seating is available when the tables are full.

Needed a solid breakfast for a day of bike riding around downtown charleston and this place was worth the short drive out to johns island. Had a breakfast burrito with bacon, eggs, cheese, potatoes, peppers and onions. The flavor was insane! Easily one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. The staff was friendly and the restaurant itself was very casual and cozy. There is an xpress version downtown, which I imagine has the same delicious food but I wanted to try the original

Best place for breakfast on John's Island, but that's not saying too much since it's really the only place for breakfast on John's Island. Service is hit or miss, this morning it was a huge miss. Wait staff can be disorganized and this really shows when they're busy. Different servers take drink orders, meal order, run food, etc. They use tiny blocks with numbers on them instead of numbering tables forcing the food runners to check every table to see where to drop off food. Usually the manager can bring everything together, but when he's not attentive the service deteriorates drastically. Can get crowded on weekends and floor set-up can feel rather congested. You pay a cashier up front instead of your server(s) taking the bill and this results in a mess up front with people sitting at high-tops, others waiting for a table, others waiting for to-go orders, and people trying to pay. The coffee is good although self-serve. Food is really good and somewhat creative for breakfast. However service can be below average at times.

OUTSTANDING little gem. this is one of the best restaurants in the area. Casual, pleasant interior. Great service, fabulous food. We eat here at least once a week and have never been disappointed. Breads, appetizers, entrees are all perfect. Our congratulations to the management and chefs for a truly great establishment.

It was cool night, and I was drinking wine and whiskey on Seabrook as the ocean breeze carried my troubles away. I woke up hungover, my stomach demanding two eggs, toast, and sausage. Who knows why. So we went to Sunrise Bistro. The place is super casual, but has a large and varied menu. (By the way, you serve yourself coffee here - I don't drink the crap, but they had a bunch of flavors and my companion tells me that hers was good). I ordered two eggs and toast with sausage. The kind of sausage patty I used to eat growing up. Not locally organically pasture-raised, not infused with fennel seeds and artisinally-harvested fruit. Just a freaking breakfast sausage patty. Nice thick slice of toast too. My companion ordered the open-faced omelette special, which had all kinds of cheese and salsa on it, as well as avocado and french fries (I know!). We were hesitant at first, but it was really tasty and unique and easily went down our gullets. Service was good, and all the staff were very friendly. I'll surely return.

What an truly great local community dive of a breakfast and lunch cafe/diner. First, their homemade bread with enriched rosemary and olive oil is just "wow". The open face omelette idea is great because it distributes everything so well. The staff is super uber friendly. It is a little out OG F the way but so worth it.

In honor of becoming a new member of the Elite squad, I figured I needed to write a LONG overdue review. Oh Sunrise Bistro, how much I love thee... My friend lives in Johns Island so she knew about this gem of an eatery. She suggested we go to Sunrise Bistro after a nearby 5K event as she'd tried it before and always enjoyed it. I've since eaten at Sunrise a total of 3 times? Not sure but certainly not enough. Any run event that we do in the general area, WILL be followed up with a stop at Sunrise Bistro for breakfast, that I can promise. Quick rundown of what I've had (sadly only breakfast but hope to rectify that one day!) - JB's Ultimate Burrito w/ sausage and pepperjack grits. I love breakfast burritos and this one was REALLY good. First time trying the pepperjack grits and from bite one knew we had a winner and I'd order them again. Dang good grits! Bacon, egg and cheese everything bagel sandwich. I was afraid of a bagel sandwich because if the bagel isn't executed well, it'd be a fail. FANTASTIC and repeated this tasty combo the last time I ate there (along with a side of those grits!). I've sampled my friends' shrimp and grits, grits bowl and corned beef hash - all super tasty! I love their coffee table. Had their southern pecan pie coffee last visit and I'm glad I only got a half a mug the first time, because it allowed me to get a second cup! My friend wanted a second cup because it was so good but had no room. I love the look and feel of the place which, besides the fantastic food, is another reason I'm bound and determined to try their lunch and dinner menu. **disclaimer - I really think I've eaten other things from Sunrise (biscuits & gravy? house potatoes?) but since I'm not positive, I'll maybe add to this review down the road.

One of the best gems in Johns Island... While I love all the food here and have never had a bad meal the many times I have eaten here, I need to make mention of their chicken n waffles. It's not on the menu and is only offered as a special every so often, but it is the best I have ever had! Definitely give it a try if you can. They even made my wife a mimosa on one occasion even though it wasn't on the menu. Can't argue that... We will be returning.... a Lot!

Really delicious stop on the way to the beach. Delicious fish basket and the hummus sandwich is great, too. The service is friendly and it was packed. I'd go there again.

Wonderful! We stopped here for a late lunch after a visit to the Tea Plantation and the Angel Oak tree. What a great place! Relaxed and comfortable, but completely professional. I had the grilled cheese (it comes with tomato and basil--yumm!) and lemon chicken soup that was just perfect. Great choice!

Service was great, atmosphere, casual. We had the Crab open faced omelette, and it was delicious. The pepper jack cheese grits are creamy, but they are spicy, and the pepper taste was so overbearing, you couldn't taste the cheese or grits. The herb bread that was paired with the omelette was ok, but I didn't personally think it paired well with the meal. The coffe bar was awesome. Nice touch.

Great spot. No frills just good food at a great value. I had the western omelet and it was as good as a western omelet gets. I love how they made it "opened faced" to maximize the ingredients. I would recommend to anyone and will definitely visit again.

Went there for brunch and had the grits bowl and a begal. It was delicious. Enjoyed our meal so much went back another day for lunch and was not disappointed. Their begals are made fresh and you can taste the difference. For lunch I had a warm kale salad and it was very fresh and delicious.

Sunrise Bistro is the tiny breakfast joint that my fiance's family stops at every year while they're in Kiawah. If it were up to me, this place would get a three. I must give fair notice that I was coerced into raising my review because others absolutely love this joint. I had an omelet. They serve all of their omelets "open-face," apparently. I'm not quite sure why. They must have some aversion to spatulas or something. Anyway, it was good. There were no complaints with the omelet, aside from the fact that it comes with toast and nothing else. I admit to lamenting the lack of breakfast side. The coffee was good, as was the service. Everyone was extremely friendly. We were offered to-go cups for our coffee, which I thought was a very nice touch. All in all, this is a place that I thought was reasonably tasty but my fiance thinks is fantastic. Four it is. I know where my bread is buttered.

Try the Grits Bowl! It comes with sausage, bacon, ham, eggs, cheese, onions, peppers, tomato over grits. Super good! I added some hot sauce for effect.

Just a fantastic find while my family and I were bumbling around John's Island. The grits, seafood, and even roast beef sandwich with fries were delicious and came out quickly. The staff couldn't have been nicer with our infant. Avoid the tourist traps of Kiawah, Sullivan's Island, or Isle of Palms and get a delicious meal full of Low Country charm and casual atmosphere. I can't say enough good about this place - we'll definitely be back on our next trip to the area.

Really great find! We ate here after seeing the Angle Oak Tree and the Charleston Tea Plantation. Amazing food! We had the Greek salad and the Caesar salad -both came w homemade bread/croutons. The chicken quesadilla was fantastic! It had a sweetness to it - which our server said was a a secret recipe. The guys all enjoyed their Big Steak burritos. Oh and homemade cookies!

I got the JI French toast. I ordered this because I had a sweet tooth and it definitely wasn't sweet. There was barely any powdered sugar and the toast was burnt. My wife ordered grits, eggs, and bacon and was satisfied with hers! Server didn't check back up on us until we were ready to pay so I couldn't complain sooner. They took my meal off bill because I only had like two bites. We wouldn't go back.

Quaint restaurant, doesn't look like much from the outside but the food is awesome! Well priced menu and a variety of brunch favorites. Would definitely come back again. [Breakfast burrito and biscuit and gravy were ordered]

I have driven by this place so many times and haven't even thought twice about it. The facade doesn't help their case. It looks kind of tired. Despite my misgivings, a friend recommended it so I decided to give it a try. I was really impressed. I have now tried the breakfast and lunch and both were very good. The breakfast was unremarkable, but I ordered food that was hard to screw up, so I'll have to be more adventurous for my next breakfast. The lunch is was sold me. I took another reviewers suggestion and tried the Cajun Shrimp sandwich. It was excellent. The service was just fine. Looking forward to eating here again!

Great little place for a simple sandwich or breakfast. We enjoyed their curried shrimp sandwich on herbed bread. It was very large and I took half home. I thought their lunch menu was a bit more creative than their breakfast menu. Breakfast portions were generous, although the french toast came as JUST french toast on the plate. A few strawberries, mint leaf or sliced banana for garnish would have added to the plate. Our lunch waiter gave great service. He was extremely personable and did a great job! Unfortunately, our breakfast servers were a bit disinterested. Didn't seem to care much about us. Bad day? Disappointing, as we also had come to Sunrise Bistro after reading good reviews on Yelp. I applaud the job Jessica, the owner is doing. She's the glue that holds it all together! We liked the casualness of this place. Sunrise Bistro is clean, simple and has good food.

A real treasure. We stopped for lunch on the way into town from Seabrook island. Don't let the outside deter you...the food is awesome. I had a cup of the soup of the day which was crab and lobster bisque. It was amazing and I couldn't keep my husband out of it. We were disappointed that they were closed on Mondays..hoping for one more try on the way home. We will be back next time through...
