My husband and I went here last night. We both agreed that it was the best steak we ever had! Perfectly done and seasoned ! The mashed potatoes were wonderful as well. Oh and did I measure the service? Well it was marvelous.

My husband and I came here while on vacation and were SO impressed with this restaurant! I had seen this featured on MSN's best steakhouses in January so I made reservations at that time to make sure we could eat here as we would be celebrating my husband's Birthday. When we arrived, we were seated promptly and the first thing out of our waiter's mouth was "I hear you folks are from Seattle!" I was impressed as I had completely forgotten that I had mentioned that while making the reservations. From start to finish, it was a wonderful experience. Big shout out to our waiters, Bruce & Matt for making this a truly memorable night. The food was outstanding and they were so accommodating. I would HIGHLY recommend this place to anybody in the market for an excellent dinner!!! We WILL be back! :)

5 Stars for every facet of the experience! Our server Ciro was the best! Filet was like butter. Crab cakes had a slight orange taste to them and were fantastic!

This is one of my favorite restaurants in town. The chopped salad is a must-have (sometimes I go to the bar just to have a glass of wine and the salad!). They always do well with seafood although I miss the way the former chef cooked the steaks. The chocolate cake is amazing. If I eat a full meal at Oak, I always finish it off with chocolate cake and coffee. The service is always great, as is the management.

I finally had the opportunity to officially try Oak. The restaurant was beautiful and I loved that they kept some of the past history of the building in tact. The atmosphere felt very high-end: the service had that "fancy" feel to it and it would wise to dress up just a bit (the guy in the cargo shorts and flip-flops stuck out like a sore thumb.) I'm not a huge steak eater, so I was pleasantly surprised to find plenty of options for myself. The roasted chicken was good, but the goat-cheese ravioli that came with was phenomenal. All the pasta in made in-house and didn't have a trace of mushiness to it. The rest of my table had different cuts of steaks and a few sides. Everyone enjoyed their meals, but they did think they've had better steaks in Charleston.

The food was ok, but I felt extremely rushed. It seemed like the only thing they were worried about was turning the table. For fine dining and the prices they charge how about some atmosphere!!!! They brought the entrees before we were even done with the appetizers! Not impressed. With so many exceptional restaurants in the area, we won't be back.

Seven of us went for two birthday's during restaurant week. Everything was terrific. The only disappointment was the smoor's dessert.

Ever been to an excellent steakhouse? Think again until you have come here. This quaint and cozy restaurant has everything you can ask for- attentive and friendly staff, amazing food, and wonderful decor. Also, if you drive your car here, valet will park it for free after 6 PM. Definitely a bonus when there's very little parking spots to choose from in Charleston. Our waiter Bradley, was a very knowledgeable waiter that was patient, attentive, and very informative of the things on the menu. He was the best waiter I have had and I hope you have him for your experience! For starters we got the wedge salad and sweet onion bisque. Both dishes were excellent and different than your typical wedge and onion soups. For dinner we got the filet with whipped potatoes, carrots and celery and braised short rib with melt in your mouth most flavorful, boneless piece of meat you could ever imagine. If you're thinking about getting a different entree than the short ribs, rethink it. If you are a filet fan, this will be the most flavorful and tender cooked to perfection any way you like it. For dessert we got cherry and white chocolate bread pudding which was more like a muffin than bread pudding. This was a bit of a disappointment, but nonetheless was tasty. Overall, if you are visiting Charleston this a must to go to. The beautiful decor and warm rooms made the place even better. I will definitely be back!

FABULOUS FOOD! We came here on an anniversary a couple of years ago and I must say this is the best meal we have ever had. The filet mignon wrapped in bacon was to die for. Great staff, and a quaint elegant atmosphere. A little on the pricey side, but for a special occasion absolutely worth it! They took our reservations several months in advance which was nice too.

ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY AMAZING!!!!! I can not say enough about the food and service. If there were more stars The Oak Steakhouse completely deserve it. Herman is by far top shelf and management as well.

Pay for service, location, food, & experience of paying for all good things, in that order. Sides are HUGE. Food is QUALITY. Staff and management are paying very close attention to your experience. Dress is in good taste, not necessarily formal. Enjoy!

Had dinner here on Sunday, and the experience was excellent, as it always is. My husband and I had our regular meal: butchers plate as a starter (the pate was delicious) and dry aged rib eye and 8 ounce filet as the main entrees. Both steaks were wonderful. The wine list is extensive, and the Sunday wine specials are even better! The service is excellent. Jerrod and Herman were very attentive and helpful. We eat at the Oak every time we're in Charleston, and it is always an excellent experience.

Ruth who?? In our home town of Chicago, Ruth's Chris is considered the top-rated steakhouse, but this place blew them away. We were re-visiting Charleston after a 25-year absence, and tried Oak after the wait proved to be too long at the brew pub we tried first. I'm glad we did. The atmosphere was much quieter and low-key, the building is very elegant (a restored 150-year-old bank building with lots of wood, arched windows, and high ceilings), the service was impeccable, and the food was to die for. I wasn't too hungry and had become surfeited on seafood during our visit to Charleston, so I just ordered the Oak C.A.B. (Certified Angus Beef) tenderloin salad, with seared beef tips, shaved red onions, blistered tomatoes, pine nuts, shaved Parmesan cheese, and a roasted garlic vinaigrette dressing over mixed greens. Usually there's not much you can say about a salad, but this was without a doubt the best salad I've ever had. I almost wanted to lick the plate clean! The quality of the steak was what made it. My husband had the center-cut 8-ounce filet mignon, and also pronounced it the best steak he'd ever had. The wine list was pretty extensive; we both had a glass of the 2008 Steele pinot noir. We had just enough room left to split the Oak Steakhouse chocolate cake and some Taylor Fladgate 20-year tawny port. The only negative point was a wobbly table, which our server promised to have looked at as soon as we left (we didn't want to interrupt our meal to have it fixed sooner). What a find! We'll definitely be back the next time we visit Charleston!

Oak is a very nice restaurant, but it was not as good as it was talked up to me. I don't know...maybe in the midst of Charleston's restaurant utopia, my standards were a little too high. The building is extremely charming, with several rooms throughout the restaurant. We were seated on the third floor in a large room. I enjoyed a massive Caesar side salad, which could have been dressed a little more. My entrée was the filet and it was a nice thick cut. It seems that most of the people at my table's steaks were undercooked and some were unable to eat theirs. Being from Texas, I could handle a rare steak and it was still good. All in all, I think Oak is a restaurant that most would enjoy...

Came for restaurant week and got the Caesar salad, 8 oz steak, and chocolate dessert for a great price. The salad was average and the dessert was pretty dry and flavorless, but the steak was stellar - cooked perfectly and served simply. The ambiance was warm and elegant, and the service was very attentive but not invasive. Very nice experience.

We celebrated our 50th Anniversary there. I think it's the most expensive restaurant we've ever been to. Cheapest bottle of wine on the wine list was $75. Anyhow I had their dry aged new york and my wife had a filet. We both ordered the steaks medium cooked. Mine was a little rare, but an awesome cut of meat. However my wife's filet was extremely rare, even thought it was butterflied, so she sent it back and when it came back it was still extremely rare and luke warm, but she ate it anyhow rather than sending it back again. Anyhow, I believe it was the manager that took the filet off our bill, which was fair. All in all, while my wife's filet was a problem, my steak, the béarnaise sauce and the desert were all excellent. I rated this restaurant at four stars, but if it wasn't for my wife's problems with the steak being too rare I would have rated it at five stars.

My wife and I went to Oak last Saturday night, we both thought it was excellent, particularly the food. I had the 8 oz filet, medium rare, it was probably one of the best steaks I have ever eaten, it was cooked to perfection. My wife had the crab cakes, and she also said they were the best she had eaten. We have lived in Annapolis, Maryland, so we know what good crab cakes taste like. Truffle fries were also ordered, huge order, were also very good. If you are looking for some very good food, in a very nice atmosphere, I would highly recommend Oak. We had three drinks each, including an after dinner drink, the bill plus the 20% tip that I added was about $190, it is not cheap, but I would definitely go back

Went here twice with the family and some family friends, and both times were very delicious. Our group was seated at the very back of the restaurant on the first floor, right by the kitchen. Apparently dad had requested that we sit here, and it was very interesting seeing the cooks bustling around the kitchen and the lead chef even came up to our table to talk to us. I do not know what the ambiance is like in the rest of the restaurant, but it was pretty cool being back there. Everyone at the table loved their steaks both times I was there. I am more of a seafood person than a steak person so I got fish the first time, and the second time I got a mushroom risotto dish. I know it is probably lame to get risotto at a nice steak restaurant but boy, was it delicious. The mushrooms are great adn the risotto was nice, creamy deliciousness. Highly recommend it if you can resist the temptation of getting a big juicy steak. Good wine, good food, and expensive, though that is to be expected. For a special occasion this is a great place to go.

It's was our anniversary and we were both disappointed with the food. The service was fine but for the price of dinner I could think of other better places to eat. Simply the steaks are overrated. For steaks in the Charleston area go over to Halls Chophouse. Can't beat them around here

Charleston Restaurant Week continues. We decided to try Oak Steakhouse for one of our 3 for $30.00 venues. I don't eat steak, so the chances of us getting to this restaurant have been slim, but my husband does and it seemed like we could kill two birds with one stone. Plus, the restaurant seems to be renown within Charleston. Oak's online menu for Charleston Restaurant Week was deceiving. I thought it might be a typo, which it is, as only three entrees are listed as your options, and nothing else. We still decided to give it a try. During the day I took a peek at their regular dinner menu. I was not surprised that their prices went from $20 - $50 an entrée. Side dishes hover around $8.00; again, not surprising. Having just moved down to the Lowcountry from Boston, there is an "Oak Room" in Massachusetts with similar offerings, masculine, "woody" decor, high end service and food. But much to my surprise this steakhouse offered veal saltimbocca, my absolute favorite dish. I couldn't stop thinking about it all day. Upon our arrival we had someone there to open the door for us and usher us into the restaurant - very nice. We were seated immediately. The restaurant has three levels, and is somewhat narrow in size. I was surprised how small it actually was. We were seated on the second floor, and not at a small two-top table which is one of my pet peeves, but at a spacious table that was very comfortable. Our waiter, Justin and his assistant, Gerard, were terrific right from the start. They were attentive, pleasant, and yet not invasive. I was pleased that the restaurant is more casually elegant than stuffy. Even though we came with the premise of ordering from the 3 for $30.00 menu, the Saltimbocca lured me in. I also order a beet and local goat cheese salad to start. My husband ordered from the Restaurant Week menu and decided upon the potato leek soup, Tuscan rubbed filet and bananas foster bread pudding. Our first course arrived quickly and it was fabulous. My salad had multicolored, very thinly sliced beets, golden raisins, candied pecans and an ample serving of goat cheese, topped with a very light dressing. I wanted to finish the entire thing, but stopped midway through to leave room for my entrée. The potato leek soup was seasoned very lightly and was also very, very good. Justin and Gerard checked in on us from time to time, but again remained at a distance, which was nice. Our entrees arrived... The Tuscan Rubbed Filet was about a 7 oz cut of meat cooked perfectly and sitting atop a mixture of hash browned potatoes and lima beans - an interesting and flavorful combination. My thought-about-all-day Saltimbocca was an abysmal disappointment. At first glance I thought it was overcooked and I was correct. It was served with a piping hot dish of spaghetti with marinara sauce, which was actually quite good. Gerard asked if there was anything that I needed and I asked him if he had any crushed red pepper. He responded, "I don't think we have any, but I will find some!" And he did. It is unlike me not to send something back to the kitchen that is not made correctly, but for some reason, I just didn't want to break up the pace of our meal. I had my husband taste it and he said it was just "ok" and that maybe I should put some of the sauce on it that rested on the plate - still no help. At the same time what appeared to be the manager walked by and decided that turning up Stevie Ray Vaughn in the speaker directly above our table was something that needed to be done. This was a big turnoff as was his impersonal stop by the table on the way down the stairs to see if "Justin was taking care of us". It seemed like a manager drive by more than genuine concern and it did not fit with the service we had been receiving. On a positive note, I ordered a glass of the Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot with dinner which was pricey, but worth the indulgence. The Bananas Foster Bread Pudding, although not something I would order was thoroughly enjoyed by my husband. So my lesson learned is that if you go to a "steak place" you should order steak. I must take time to mention again the over the top service that we received. In all of the years that we've visited Charleston, and now since we've moved here, we have never had the level of service that we had this evening and it should be commended. But, we went there for the reputation of the food and it was way off the mark. I cannot say that we will be back anytime soon.

I had the burger, which is fabulous. If you go there during happy hour (5 to 7) it is only $10. I swapped out the fries for asparagus, in order to try and be a bit healthier. It was delicious and perfect.

Had a pretty lame meal here recently. The waiter didn't offer me a choice of the tantalizing sauces I'd read about on the online menu, although my steak was well prepared. The steak came with a mound of grilled onions that I wish I'd have known about before I ordered french fried onions (at almost $9) as my only side (the waiter said nothing about this when I ordered). I think I will try this company's new restaurant in town, The Macintosh, but I would steer steak people toward Grill 225 or Hall's Chophouse before coming here.

I had a great steak (ribeye) dinner at Oak Steakhouse 2 weeks ago when I was in Charleston. Even though I had specifically requested med-rare, the steak which was being shared with my sister and came sliced, was deliverred to the table a nice shade of "blue". When we called over our server to ask for it to be more cooked, the platter was taken away and returned a few minutes later a beautiful red. The ribeye had wonderful flavor (didn't need any sauce) and was very tender. We also order the lobster "mac n cheese" which didn't have any macaroni, but had orzo rice. A good quantity of lobster meat, that was very tasty. My sister ordered a slice of the carrot layer cake that had a cinnamon cream cheese icing that was delicious. The cake itself was very moist. I took a star away from the restaurant because the hostess tried to seat us on their third floor back area where no one else was seated and looked very cramped. I hate it when restaurants think that it's okay to seat 2 women at the worst table. I refused the table and was shown to a better (more lively) table on their mezzanine level. Service was very attentive. Will probably return and specify when I make a reservation that I wish to be seated on their third floor (front area).

First 5 Star rating in Charleston. Everything was perfect from my wife's Lemon Drop Martini to the salads, bread, amazing Mac & Cheese and the best rib eye steak I have had in a long time. Service was wonderful and the GM Michelle gave us a history lesson on the building. All around fabulous dining experience. Highly recommend.

High point.....hands down the best steak I have ever eaten. The pomme frittes or french fries were awesome too. Low point..... the rolls were aweful. Way too hard. Mine was like a big cruton. But, that part was complementary. Second high point....Top notch service.

Place is a fantastic prime steakhouse. The food reminded me of the same quality one would expect to find at Fleming's or Mastro's. Steaks come out still sizzling just a tad on a hot plate, making those first few bites intense, making the price tag all worth while. I ordered a NY strip (can't go wrong). Also had a great side of whipped potatoes, and a starter salad that was all nothing trying to be too fancy, but of the best, and freshest quality. I was eyeing the filets the couple next to me at the bar were chomping on and they looked outstanding. Wine list of top-tier all the way, and the bar even stocked red bull, which I love because it shows despite the menu having a huge price tag, they are not stuffy, but forward thinking. On to the scene....I went alone on a Saturday night. Wow. Packed house, but not obnoxious like it's counterpart "Hall's Chophouse" across town, which can get so ridiculous the bar can be three deep in the same size space. Also, you can get just as good a steak here without the hassle. There was a TV behind the bar airing college football, and a great, diverse crowd, mostly dominated by the 35-55 crowd. The bartenders had a great attitude, very professional, and totally took care of me. I would highly recommend reservations on a weekend if dining with others. I will frequent this place anytime I am in search of an outstanding prime steak, great cocktails, and great service.

Just moving to Charleston next week so we were in town doing the final walk thru on our new house. Very welcoming place and the waiter was wonderful. We had a charming table for two tucked away in the back so it was nice and romantic. I think booking thru Open Table adds value to the experience. The Manager came over to welcome us, and offered us free desserts. The steak was excellent and cooked perfectly. What a nice welcome to Charleston!

I have mixed feelings about this place especially since their head chef Brett just left the restaurant. The food is always fine, they have an amazing burger and decent cuts of meat. However it is a bit pricey for what it is, grill 225 in Charleston has better steak, again expensive but if you are just going on quality/taste with an unlimited budget that is a better bet. I love the ambiance in this place, its lively and somewhat easy going, which I can appreciate in a more expensive restaurant. I ate here last night and I'm just never wow'd by anything, but its always a good safe bet. We will see what happens with the menu with a new head chef....

Great steaks and great smoked pork - both very tender and perfectly cooked. Fried onions were over salted but nice complement to steak - salads a nice complement to the dinner. Mushrooms OK but not great. Ask to be seated upstairs as it is a good deal more quiet. Service attentive and knowledgeable. Expensive but worth it.

I took my girl friend here on one of our first dates during restaurant week. Despite our young age and appearance as young college kids that were probably strapped for cash the service was extremely attentive and personable. The manager even came over to make sure we were satisfied and being served well she even returned several times through out our meal to check up. Our dinner at Oak was one of the best meals I have ever had in Charleston. We had their restaurant week special of local clams cooked with chicken andouille sausage in a thyme broth, followed by a CAB fillet minion, and topped of at the end with a butter scotch pancotti. Best steak I have had in charleston. Highly recommended will be returning.

The place is gorgeous. The staff made us feel like movie stars and the food was outstanding. Four of us went to blow out a friends retirement. We had a blast and had fun for hours. Between all of us, we ordered just about everything on the menu. The lobster mac and cheese is a must try. The steaks were fantastic and the wine selection is very nice. If you have a special occasion or entertaining, Oak will not disappoint!

Would give 4.5 stars if I could. Went here for "Christmas" dinner because my parents just relocated to Charleston from Atlanta and my brother and I were in to help unpack. And needless to say that the kitchen is not unpacked enough to make a Christmas dinner. The host staff was a little on the awkward side, don't know what that was about. We sat on the third floor which was intimate and quite, with beautiful chandeliers. Perfect atmosphere for an upscale steakhouse. Our waitress was very nice, recommended some nice cocktails for my indecisive mom and was helpful in choosing our entrées later on. Mom tried the Italian 75 (I believe) which is sort of like a martini but with Prosecco. Very, very good. I wish that I had gotten one as well. We had a bottle of Cabernet for the table. I don't remember the name of it, although it was delicious. They brought a basket of bread and some butter out to start. Nothing spectacular, some French bread and onion-y rolls with sweetish butter. For an appetizer, we shared the scallops and the Foie Gras. They were small servings, but left us plenty satisfied as they were both very rich, perfectly prepared, and a good compliment to the very large entrées to come. The Foie Gras came with a sweet potato French bread, which was very good, especially on a mildly cold December evening. On to the entrées. My father ordered the Cajun Blackened Prime New York Strip. It was served with some sautéed onions and a crayfish on top. He said that the crayfish was kind of cold (I'm pretty sure that it was meant to be just a garnish) but the steak was fantastic. My brother had the Bone-In Rib Eye because "all 24 ounces were calling [his] name". This thing was HUGE. I don't know how he could possibly have eaten the entire thing, but he said that it was too good to eat. Mom ate the petite Filet Mignon with the Béarnaise sauce. The Filet was perfectly cooked and seasoned, which made up for the Béarnaise, which was just okay. I ordered the rack of lamb because I am predictable and it is my favorite. It was the only entrée that actually came with sides and was served with some whipped mashed potatoes and pole green beans, as well as an unidentified sauce. The sauce tasted like some kind of glaze (lamb, perhaps?) with currants. It was perfect. I absolutely love love love LOVE lamb. It's my favorite dish, especially when cooked right. So perfect. The mashed potatoes were smooth and velvety and seasoned well, and the green beans were hot but crisp with a yummy buttery sauce. As a table we ordered three additional sides (they're served "family style" which is why they're about $8 each) of roasted mushrooms (which I had none of because I don't care for mushrooms), green beans, and French fried onions. The onions were so good. Think fancy onion rings. The family loved the roasted mushrooms, and as I said earlier, the green beans were fantastic. We ordered dessert (which we NEVER do) because it was our Christmas dinner. We had the crème brûlée and the carrot fig cake. Carrot fig cake was good. Crème brûlée was fantastic. The sugar on top was perfectly caramelized and the custard was creamy and flavorful, just as a crème brûlée should be. I would definitely recommended that you try this restaurant, provided that you are some kind of carnivore.

I had dinner at the Oak Steakhouse, staff was friendly. Valet parking a plus, no charge, tips excepted. Nice young men at the valet. We sat on the third floor which is great if you are not people watchers. I would had rather been on the second floor near the railing, which I think would be the best place to sit. The first floor is very loud but nice. The bar is as you walk in the first floor, and there is window seating which would be a good place to sit. I had the special 60 aged ribeye, which is very good, along with the brussels sprouts with added bacon. Those were great, I would order them again. The mac and cheese has a lot to be desired, would not order it again. I gave it a 4 star with the benefit of a doubt, but in Charleston Compassion to what I have had, it should probably be a 3 star for food and a 4 star for classy.

Terrific experience, Steak Tartare and fried lobster are reasonably priced, unique and delicious. Great service, I travel to Charleston every month or so and always visit oak. If you are lucky enough to sit at the bar, there is no better bartender than Melanie.

This is an absolutely fabulous restaurant! I was at the Oak Steakhouse several years ago for a private business dinner and thought it was great. While in Charleston for a weekend I thought I would try it again. Everything about the meal and the service was wonderful. We got a great recommendation from the waiter on some wine and chose the Coppola Pinot Noir. It was as good as the waiter indicated. My boyfriend and I shared a fabulous foie gras appetizer. For dinner, I opted for ribeye "Pittsburgh style", a steak grilled to perfection with a sugar seared outside and a topping of grilled foie gras. It was out of this world. We had a chocolate dessert that was to die for. This is a great place for a fabulous dinner. It is on the pricey side but definitely worth it.

My wife and I visited charleston for our 10th wedding anniversary. We ate here on a recommendation from a friend of ours. We loved the food and the service was great. Couldn't go 5 stars due to cost, but I definitely knew the cost in advance.

Very upscale and a special place to eat. Staff and service was simply outstanding. Great steakhouse is a historic type setting. We were led upstairs and had some great cuts of beef. Wonderful meal. I would have loved to have had a bottle of wine but it was late and I was still jetlagged. I think I would have enjoyed the experience even more, but I was really hitting the wall. It is very pricey, but like I said, this is fine dining. I would have expected no less. And, I wouldn't hesitate to come here again the next time I'm in Charleston.

Went there with a party of ten people. We were seated on time, and our server was fantastic. Every one of our orders were correct, and the quality of the food was great. I had the 32oz ribeye, and it was cooked to perfection at medium (remember that ribeyes need to be cooked a bit longer). The sides were great, and the wine selection was adequate. We ended up spending about $125/person, but it was well worth it and I would do it again happily. This is one of the few places that I've eaten that made steak better than I make myself (I'm a bit of a steak/grill nerd).

I love the first class service at Oak from the time we entered we were greeted as if they had been expecting us. The server knew we were there to celebrate our anniversary she brought us a special appetizer to get us started. The food at every point was a delicious explosion of flavor from scallops to the melt in your mouth filet not to mention the best creme brulee ever! I came up behind the gentlemen who were ready to serve our table and they were quietly discussing which steak went to which patron, nice touch. I was most impressed by the pleasant staff and the way they communicated with one another. It feels great to have the staff know your name with congratulations throughout the evening from different staff members.

This was an extraordinary restaurant with even better waiting service! My wife and I went there for our honeymoon dinner and was treated with the utmost respect and gratitude. Not only were we given complementary glasses of champaign, but, we were visited by e chefs assistant and then some all because we chose the Oak House for our honeymoon dinner. The steaks were a 10 out of 10 and the wine was just as good! Great atmosphere and great people!

I had THE BEST birthday here back in June! The best service, food was DELISH, and the dining area was romantic--quiet, beautiful and comfortable. Compared to Halls (where we celebrated my bf's birthday), The Oak wins HANDS DOWN! Many people try to decide between the two for special celebrations, and I have to tell you my experience at Halls was a one star and the Oak was just fabulous. We are definitely coming back again...customer service made certain that we would! :-)

Steak was quite good. Sides were not. Expensive. Unfortunately I discovered this is a favorite place of locals. Translation: loud, noisey bar scene. Perhaps if we had dined upstairs, the atmosphere would have been fine. If you are seated downstairs where the bar is, your ears will be ringing by the time you leave. We also were seated at the "chef's table" which is right in front of the cooks. Their mouths were filthy - not something you should expose your patrons to.

Great food, drinks, service and atmosphere! Arrived thinking steaks and was persuaded by the description of the house speciality burger. OMG! Can't wait to go back!

Took an important business contact to dinner here, and it was fantastic! Excellent wine, delicious steak and yummy dessert. The service was top-notch and the manager stopped by to check on our experience. At our urging, she promptly gave us a history lesson on the building and spent many minutes with us. My only "issue" with Oak was that everything was a la carte. I expected an expensive meal, but when everything was ordered separately, the bill soared. If money is no object, then spend it here!

We were at last minute addition to a group on a Saturday night. Not only were they very accommodating with excellent service...I had a fantastic steak with a delicious dessert. First time there but I will return.

Oak is one of those places that is good if someone else is paying. I do think that the food is good but $40+ for a steak is kinda steep. The steaks are usually good although I think they were better when Brett McKee was the chef. I have a slight aversion to expensive steak houses since I think you can generally cook the same thing at home for a fraction of the price. The difference between Oak and major chain places is mostly the quality of the meat. However, you can buy quality meat at a nice butcher shop or Whole Foods and basically get the same steak. Edit: I think it should be known that the manager actually contacted me about my review. I upped my star rating just because of the level of customer service that shows. More places should care what the customer thinks. Major kudos to the management for checking Yelp and actually caring what real customers think.

The 36 ounce ribeye was awesome. Very tender and juicy. Our waiter was great. He will always come back every 10-15 mins to check up on us and see if we need anything. Very nice atmosphere. Would eat there again.

I was impressed with Oak the second I walked in the door. The hostess was super friendly, the bar made amazing mojitos, and our server was fantastic. The steak was one of the best I've ever had - they even gave us free champagne for being there for a special occasion. I'll definitely be back.

Oak has gone downhill in the past few months...I don't know what they are doing accepting product that shouldn't be served...USDA PRIME, maybe, but not the best...And I know...Really needs to get their act together...I think they are going for profit only, and not for the sizzle.. Sides are vvery good, but...my NY wasn't worth the cost...It was maybe the worst PRIME steak I've ever had....If it was PRIME grade...Jury out on that one...

First the hostess tried to seat us at a large booth on the 1st floor right by the bar. I had to tell her that wasn't going to work and asked for another table. She acted a little annoyed, but it was worth asking. She moved us to the 3rd floor corner table by the window. WOW! What a difference. That changed everything. Classic, elegant, upscale. Great atmosphere and great view. I was excited =) The food was simply delicious. This is one of my new favorites in Charleston. If in the mood for a great steak in Chucktown this would be my #1 pick. Recommendations: Filet - Rare plus Cream Spinach Mashed Potatoes Sides are large enough for 2 people to share

Oak has a very nice atmosphere and a very friendly staff. We started with the baked potato soup (delicious!) and the calamari with biscotti. While I enjoyed the calamari, I kept getting the slight aroma and taste of olive oil that had reached the smoky point while cooking. It detracted from the otherwise delicious dish. My date had the NY Strip with the Pittsburgh 'cooking style', cooked to temp on the grill, brushed with sugar, and sauted in a pan. This gave it a very pleasant taste explosion with every bite. Sides? Why bother. The ho-hum baked potato was ~$12. My side of french fried onions was ~7.50 and was a little limp pile of sauted ring onions. I had the 7 oz filet done med rare. I really enjoyed this, but it was smaller than I expected. Tiramisu finished us off; well done and presented extremely well. I expected so much more. Oh well.

Everything was great except the steak, which was very average. Could be because it was Restaurant Week, but that is no excuse. Would try again, but if it was the same, I wouldn't return.

Seriously? You people who have reviewed this with more than a star--do you have tastebuds? Have you been to an actual restaurant? The insanity starts with the "Chef" advertising his "wet aged meat".......woah, hold on there partner. Meat is delivered to restaurants in cryovac bags, basically heavy duty baggies which lock in some nasty blood and other juices straight from the slaughterhouse. Open one up and breath deeply........puke! Stinks like poop. So this guy TOUTS the aging, aka rotting of meat inside the plastic. Yes, makes a lot of sense, no? I suppose he is countering (nonsensically) what is the preferred manner of aging beef--dry air circulated with a fan for several weeks at controlled temperatures. Super good stuff, go to Gallaghers in NY or any other actual steakhouse. Or, even whole foods in many of their stores have special units to dry age beef-------BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH BETTER. I'll spare you the chemistry of the whole deal. Okay, so that out of the way, I went with six people, one mom one dad one date blah blah blah. We were seated for more thatn 15 mintues before a drink order was taken. Wrong crowd for that shit. 33 minutes to first drink--yes, i set the dial on my dive watch because I just saw this train wreck coming. Good thing we had pre-cocktailed, or I would have killed someone. They tried serving us the entrees from the next table, that didn't work out so well, then they couldn't for love or money put a correct plate in front of a correct person, food was wrong, late, cooked incorrectly beyond belief. But we didn't say a word, just prayed for the end. And pricey. Highly reccomended---- or, you could just light candles with several hundred dollar bills and stay home for the night and enjoy some pizza delivery.

So went to Oak the other nite with my wife, first time for both of us. It's restaurant week here in Charleston and so of course it was busy, didn't think they would have been slammed like they were , it was a Tuesday after all. To start I had Brett's meatballs- and ok I get it I see why everyone in this town goes nuts over his meatballs, they are good, I love the idea of melted mozz over top of them.Only in Charleston can he get away with the meatballs, like I said they are good but not tons of flavor and really nobody in this town does Italian, so you cant compare, only to say mine are better.. My wife started off with Butternut Squash soup, it was really good she loved it, I thought it was a little to sweet. Maybe cut back on the brown sugar when roasted the squash main course~ I had their short ribs.. they were ok, nothing special, I would not go back for them. It was served with a sage and Asiago Pollen ta, which was good , creamy like what you want, except I didn't taste nor did I see any sage. The veg was a roasted Shallot , from the pan the ribs were roasted in~~whatever My wife had the Penne a la Vodka, which had a nice spicy tomato sauce, she liked it. I tried it and it was pretty friggen good, for Charleston.. When it comes to Italian food I am picky because I am Italian and I was born and raised in New Jersey so please take that into account. dessert ~~ I had the bread pudding which was dry as hell, I guess they serve it with a scoop of ice cream on top for the reason hoping the ice cream will melt down in so as to add some moisture, but that wasn't the case .Then when I reached the bottom all I could taste was liquor ,I think they drop a shot of rum in the bottom also to add moisture but it just didn't work... way to much... My wife had the mousse which is hard to mess up and mousse is mousse, their is nothing special about it, not even the martini glass it was served in, whatever... Over all I would go back but not for anything we had eaten. service~~ we didn't make a reservation , again thinking it was a Tuesday and a little cold that it wouldn't be that busy, but we were wrong, we were told when we walked in we would have to sit at the bar because their books were filled with reservations, which would have been OK with but once the female bartender realized I wasn't a single guy and I wasn't going to be starring at her breast which were falling out this ridiculous.. I mean for being an upscale restaurant how the hell did the FOH manager allow her to wear that shirt, if you can even call it a shirt... I don't know what it was but I guess she needs the attention, because she surely made sure the 3 guy sitting on the other side of us got anything they wanted when they wanted it, while we sat wondering when she was gunna take our order...

Liked the laid back feel downstairs(at the bar) while waiting for our room upstairs. Food was ok. We all got various cuts of steak which were subpar compared to other "chain" steakhouses. Ruths Chris and Mortons of Chicago are better pieces of meat. The sides at Oak were generous but they were the typical al a carte sides you get at the aforementioned places. Wine list was suffice. The staff was very warm but I probably won't go back. Again, it was ok just not great.

Best steak I've ever had in my life. Melts in your mouth. Wonderful sides big enough to share. Laid back but elegant atmosphere. Valet parking is very convenient when eating downtown. Have eaten there on multiple occasions and had equally wonderful experiences. Definitely a splurge but the steak is worth it.

OAK is fabulous! It is a New York Italian style steakhouse situated in a 1850's three-story historic building off Broad Street. The ambiance is... well, "old Charleston" meshed with New York. "Powerful and Elegant". Very Upscale. Be forewarned... it's very pricey- $$$$$. Chef Brett McKee has done a wonderful job! On every occasion I have been there, he has personally stopped by the table to give recommendations or to make sure that everything is "up to par". A very nice touch that I wish more restaurants with would pay attention to. I've been to OAK many times- from dinner and drinks with a date, a few private parties, and some nice dinners out with "the girls"- each time the wine was great, the food was "to die for", and the service was quick, attentive (but not in that annoying overbearing way) & knowledgeable. Everything is a La Carte. My recommendations: Start with the Tuna Tartare as an appetizer; for the main course the NY Strip, pittsburged rare, with the Foie Gras Truffle Butter sauce and Asparagus with Hollandaise sauce as the side. Wine: the Turley "Dusi Vineyard," Paso Robles '03 is wonderful!! They used to have Salsa dancing on Friday nights- I wish they would bring that back!!! I go to dance clubs about once a quarter (getting groped by strange drunk men isn't really my thing, but dancing is...) OAK provided a step away from that... in the right direction. Last I checked (which was months ago) they had done away with it and had no plans to bring it back. :( They also had a great One Year Anniversary party in January '06. Maybe they'll have a Two Year party next year!!

For all the great food I had in Charleston, this is the only steak house that I have tried. I visit Charleston several times a year and prefer finding good low country fare, but when the group wants steak, steak it is. Given that this is a high-end steakhouse, the menu is what you would expect to see. The food quality is top notch (try the iceberg wedge with the bacon that explodes in your mouth!) and the ambiance retains the historical charm of the building and Charleston. One nice advantage of the building are the levels it offers. If you want more privacy ask to be seated upstairs.

Oak has a very Unique menu for a typical steakhouse. Service is wonderful and very knowledgeable. They even have a children's menu and a vegetarian/vegan menu. They are VERY accomodating in every way possible so don't hesitate to ask.. Now if only they had a GLUTEN FREE menu! *Go for the lobster mac and cheese! It is to LIVE for!*

My husband and I moved to Charleston from New Orleans less than 6 months ago. Being in New Orleans for 3 years, we were surrounded by top rated restaurants. We had heard good things about Oak and when given the opportunity to go out for the night (we have a newborn and haven't gotten out much) we made a reservation and looked forward to having a "date night" and a great meal. We got the great meal. The apps, salads and steaks were all very good. HOWEVER, we literally were interrupted AT LEAST 2 dozen times, not just by our waiter but by every staff member at Oak. It got to the point where my husband was actually going to say something b/c we were so annoyed. I understand good service. I was in the industry for a couple of years. This was overkill to say the least. I don't think we will be going back to Oak in the near future which is a shame. The restored building lends a nice ambience, the food was good but alone time we did not get. Also, apparently on Sundays they have half off bottles of wine. Our waiter never told us that upon handing us the menus. We overheard another waiter telling the table next to us. At that point we had already each ordered a glass of wine. Bottom line, if you are looking for a nice place with good food and don't mind excessive interruptions, try Oak. If you'd rather spend $300 on a meal and be able to talk to your spouse or friends, enjoy a meal and not feel completely intruded upon, try one of the other many great restaurants in the Charleston area.....

Frequented by South of Broaders and visitors alike as one of Charleston's most premier steakhouses, Oak has impeccable service, an impressive wine list and a solid menu mostly centered around beef and seafood. While definitely on the expensive side, Oak's 8 oz. Filet ($41) and 14 oz. New York Strip ($53) are great options if you are seeking a go-big-or-go-home steak dinner out. Their Oak Burger w. fontina cheese and grilled onions on a brioche bun is pretty amazing, served with a side of truffle fries for $18. If you are not a meat-eater, the menu has plenty of seafood options as well as salads to choose from. What I love most about Oak are their family-style sides to share with the table, all priced at around $7-10, such as their Bacon Mac & Cheese, Roasted Three Cheese Cauliflower and my favorite Brussels Sprouts w. shallots and bacon. If you are looking to spurge on a meal out and are craving red meat, Oak is a great option when dining as a couple or with a group. Must-order items: Oak burger 8 oz. Filet Bacon Mac & Cheese side Brussels Sprouts side

A friend and I were visiting Charleston and while walking the old town we came across the Oak Steakhouse. I do not eat steak but i did have there fish and it was really really good. They ordered the steak and said it was well prepared and tasted great; it had a large side of fries! The server was very knowledgable and friendly and educated us on prep of there wet/dry steaks and also made great recommendations. Great meal and place to visit while in town.

Wow. What an exciting adventure. The inside of the restaurant is huge yet feels intimate. The view from the balcony is simply amazing. It is very clean inside and kept nice and cool despite the humidity outside. I'm very happy to have had this dining experience. I started with a salad that had Gorgonzola cheese and it was delish. I had a peach cocktail made with rum that was worth driving back for!! My hanger steak was very well-prepared and the side of mushrooms and Mac and Cheese were equally yummy. Our waiter was attentive but not overbearing. We really enjoyed our experience. The price was a bit more than I feel like it should be, but it is all about the location! If you're looking for a great steak, THIS is the place to check out if you find yourself in Charleston, SC. Happy eating.

Ok look I know this one of the Best steakhouses in town. It's one the reasons why I went. I finally came and was super disappointed. Don't get me wrong it's wasn't necessarily the place. The service was awesome. It was the food. I am not complaining because of the price because I'm cheap. I am not cheap BUT the prices they charge are not worth the QUALITY of the food. I was told by the waiter what I ordered was one of the best steaks on the menu. My steak was Marbled with fat as it was a Ribeye however.. It was a 16oz steak. What I got was a 8oz steak since the rest was FAT! Then I picked at a my steak and put the fat aside. When they boxed up my food they mixed all that fat I cut off in my food so it was mixed in my cream spinach leftovers. I unfortunately will not be back. I am super disappointed.

I should say I'm not a huge steakhouse person myself, but we went to dinner here on a Friday night for a bachelorette party and had a great time. We were a party of 12 and had dinner reservations, but when we got there our table was not ready due to the prior party taking longer than expected. At first it seemed like it would only be a short wait, but it ended up being kind of a long one. To make up for it, we were invited inside to the bar where they gave us a free bottle of bubbly - very nice customer service! They also took several group photos of us, which was nice. Once our table was finally ready, we were brought upstairs and seated in a private room/area that we had to ourselves. Our waiter was excellent. He knew the menu well, made great recommendations, and was personable. One weird thing that happened was we were given some side dishes we didn't order -- when we asked we were told they were a "gift," which is very nice, however we were missing some of the side dishes that we DID order and wish we had been told they were out of whatever it was we had ordered and didn't get. The food was very good, though I don't have too much knowledge of good meats since I'm not a huge meat eater. Waiting for our food took a little longer than anticipated, but there were 12 of us after all and I'm sure people had things cooked different ways and they wanted to bring everything out at once. All in all, we had a good time here and they did a great job accommodating us, we just got out of there a little later than we had expected.

While the food may be great, don't expect to eat it, even with a reservation. I have dined there several times, last Friday had a fabulous time with 3 local friends, dined at bar for happy hour. Imagine my horror when I bragged to 4 business guests from out of town how we could enjoy the bar scene at a premier steakhouse. On Monday I requested a booth in the bar for Thursday, gave my name and phone only to show up and to be told the table was spoken for, two weeks prior to my reservation and I was out of luck. They offered us a table on the 3 rd floor. I asked to speak to a manager but told no. The hostess were both snippy. We had drinks at the bar while I secured reservations at Halls. The guests loved it but I am still horrified at the treatment I received.

WOW WOW WOW. This place. Okay, I came here during a "Charleston Food Tour" that my awesome friend organized for my bachelorette party. This was our first stop, and we had appetizers and drinks, so this review is for service, atmosphere, appetizers and drinks. The couple next to me, dressed to the nines, was obviously celebrating an anniversary as they murmured to each other with a bottle of champagne perfectly served and placed in a silver chiller on the white linen table cloth. I walked in wearing a T-rex hat and a hot pink bachelorette sash, sundrenched from a day at the beach, three drinks in and hungry as hell. Our server didn't bat an eye. I wish I could remember his name. From the hostess to the server to the food runner to the amazing manager that stopped by our table and chatted for a full ten minutes - the service was impeccable. I couldn't imagine a better experience. We were welcomed, embraced and taken care of to the full extent. We order a LOT of drinks - prosecco, full wine bottles, craft cocktails and beers. We ordered the majority of the small plates menu and split it 87 different ways (which our server nailed with no mistakes at all) between 6 girls. The food blew my mind. I can't wait until the day I return to actually order steaks at this steakhouse! We had steak tartare, charcuterie plates with cheese parings, shrimp cocktail and oysters Rockefeller. I could have died happy after all that - everything was delicious, amazing, perfect. I'm scheming right now on how I can get back there - this will forever be my first stop in Charleston. I'm coming for you Oak Steakhouse! Please just take my money.

If I'm stuttering over how awesome your bread is, you're doing something amazing. We walked in and were hitting the tail end of happy hours - there was one seat available and JR C., being the gentleman he is, let me have it and we waited for some spots to open up. I am glad we stuck around - delicious wine selection, fantastic bar tender - we had been grazing prior to arriving so stuck with a plate of tartar and some fries. The tartar was exceptional and honestly, I am just not into truffled anything but these fries everyone...guys...I guess maybe I have never had truffle fries does properly? Anyway, the service all around was fantastic, from the hostesses, to the bartender, to the two managers who checked on us. Bravo, Oak - we will be back when we have a bit more money!

I'mma be succinct on this one. My family has done Christmas Eve at a good steakhouse since my grandmother stopped cooking. Gives me about 17 years of experience on such. The breakdown, pros and cons alike: *Reservations confirmed by them for a specific server and table . . . but no dice, upon our arrival. *Strange - and tacky- décor. Why are monkeys and ostriches painted on the walls? *Love me some filet so when mine was not as requested (thankfully, under), the manager promptly arrived to ask if I'd like a replacement and charmingly suggested I keep my original in case I wanted to do something with it at home - or had a dog who'd been very good and deserved a Christmas treat. That tickled me. *Fan- f*ing-tastic truffle fries. Skinny, perfectly seasoned, delicious. Mom won with her order of steak frites. *Excellent mushrooms. *Lackluster service. Our server wasn't up on his bourbons (for dad) or his menu descriptions about a few things. And annoyingly used exhausted clichés like "you can cut that steak with a fork!" . . . that weren't true. *Don't get the crab cakes. *Definitely overpriced for a) what we had (and we don't play with our good dinners, so you cheapskates definitely want to skip this place) and b) what we are used to and have come to expect for an excellent "steak house" dinner. So, two stars or three is a toss up for me (ha, I rhymed there) - not horrific, not great, not . . .a place I will go again.

Stumbled in here without a reservation and a party of 5 around 9:30 on a Saturday night. We were basically sat right away and had one our best meals in Charleston. The food was incredible, the service impeccable, ambiance very comfortable and not stuffy. Finding a steakhouse that offers as many things as Oak is rare, finding a steakhouse that isn't pretentious also quite rare. Oak Steakhouse is definitely worth going to when in town. If you like asparagus and mashed potatoes make sure you get them to accompany your steak. Thank you for such a great night.

I went to this place with a few friends and sat at the bar. Here is the breakdown: Champagne: perfectly crisp, slight dryness. Huge fan! Raw Oysters: I could've eaten 2 dozen Oysters Rockefeller: delicious! There were hints of cheddar and bacon. Foie Gras: My first time every tasting (and I did so with much hesitation, but a friend ordered it). I understand the fuss over it. I'm not sure I'd order it again. Scallops: slight acidity that was beautifully matched with the cauliflower puree and perfectly cooked Brussels sprouts and carrots. The vibe was cozy at the bar. The place is 3 stories, but I have yet to venture up. I'd be willing to come back and try the steak. Service: The bartender was sweet, and the staff were very friendly, greeting customers that have been there before with a smile and conversation. It just felt like a family. The owner showing up was another special treat. He seems like a really good guy to work for.

Took my dad here for Father's Day and had a 6'o clock reservation. Place was not crowded and loud like Halls, which I loved. We started off with some salad and shrimp, it was very good & fresh. We each had a steak also, it was hands down the best steak I've ever had! Tender and juicy, so delicious!! We got some sides of Mac n cheese (amazing), truffle fries, and asparagus which were all good as well. Only problem was a mix up with my fathers steak... he ordered a ny strip and got a filet. However, Oak was quick to fix it and also give us complimentary dessert for the mistake! Wow! The service was sort of slow but the waiters were polite and refilled drinks often. Overall, the food was fantastic but the service was a tad slow. But it was well worth the price and we had a great time!

It's hard to beat Oak! If you're looking for a great steak then this is your place. Got here a few minutes early and had drinks at the bar! Great atmosphere and service! Had the local salad which was fantastic and the onion rings! Off to a great start on all counts! Ordered 6 steaks all perfectly done and the linguine bolognese which will fill you up. Service was perfect just like the food. You cannot go wrong here! Do the Oak!

Four of us ate here as part of restaurant week. The restaurant is in a building built in the 1800's and is very lovely. There are three floors (so I suggest indicating when you make your reservation if you can't climb stairs). Since it was restaurant week we ordered from a set menu. However the 8 oz filet that I ordered is on the regular menu. It arrived perfectly cooked and had excellent flavor. Accompanying the filet was the Oak's homemade steak sauce which was tasty (although the steak did not need it). I had the option of toping my steak with shrimp, scallops, lobster etc but chose to skip those since the filet was good enough without a topping. We started the mean with an onion bisque which was creamy and delicious. Dessert was bread pudding with cherries. If one orders from the regular menu then all the sides are are a la carte, but large enough to share with the table.

If I could choose 6 stars, I would! The best steakhouse I have ever been to. And I have been to many in New York. Great Bacon Mac & Cheese, Steak was perfect! Must Dine Here! Great Service, Great Food, What Else could you want.

My girlfriends and I came here one night last week for restaurant week and it was just okay. The atmosphere was very interesting. Kinda stiff and the only thing that entertained me was the monkey that was painted on the wall. Anywho.... Our waiter was nice as can be. And the food was great but nothing special. We started the the tomato bisque which was decent. Then on to the steak. Everyone told me oak has the best steak ever but I thought it was alright nothing to rave about! I've cooked better steak at home. And then the dessert was a chocolate cheesecake! To dark for me! All and all it was an "okay" night!

Hey you! Yeah you, reading this review. Do you like amazing steak? I mean, like, really really really ridiculously good steak? Then you need to find $41 and come to this restaurant. My wife and I came here while visiting my in-laws. While fairly pricy, it was absolutely worth every penny. Our server, Gregory (a USMC vet), was very attentive and knowledgable. My wife got the special, which was swordfish, and she loved it. We also got the truffle pommes frites (fancy french fries) and the bacon macaroni and cheese. Both were delicious. I got the 8 oz filet mignon and it might be the best steak I've ever had. We also received a complimentary chocolate cake with peanut brittle which was naturally amazing. Free valet service (tip your valet!) and a smiling hostess with coat check were both very nice services as well.

My girlfriend and I came here for our three year anniversary and could not have had a better experience. They catered to my allergy needs, our dishes came out with spotless timing, and the food was absolutely outstanding. Our server has been working here for ten years and was so pleasant and helpful! On top of that, they wrote "happy anniversary" on our desert plate and brought me to tears!!! Absolutely wonderful!

We came here because all the other restaurants we were thinking of going to were booked, and it was the best thing that could have happened to us. Bar staff was friendly, seated at reservation time. The restaurant is beautiful, lots of historical Charleston charm. We we're were seated on 3rd floor, which was interesting with the bird theme. We ordered the foie gras appetizer and it was insanely good (I've been to France and I like this more), the peach really balanced the salty, nutty taste of the foie gras. The 14oz NY steak was big enough for two to split, if you get a side. Bacon Mac&cheese was our choice and it was very good. The tiramisu was the perfect way to end the night, really a good quality and we'll done dessert. My husband rarely eats more than one bite and he asked if we could order one to go tomorrow. The staff and manager (Herman?) were really great and made our anniversary very memorable. We will be back, possibly tomorrow... for lunch.

Service, management, decor, and atmosphere were very good. However, I was disappointed in the quality of the food. I felt it was average and the pricing was way out of line. Caesar salad, special tomato and cheese salad, mushroom side, french fry side, and asparagus side were all just okay. The $50 dollar rib eye steak was over done. Trigger fish was too salty.

Best steakhouse in town. Love the atmosphere. We sit at the bar often and have gotten to know the bar staff fairly well. They always remember us and are friendly. The burger is supposed to be one of the best in town but I have not tried yet...plan to though. I personally like Oak better than Hall's because it's not packed and loud like Hall's is all the time. More romantic and historic setting than Hall's. (Not dissing Hall's at all. Just pointing out some differences) I always order the shrimp prawns and they are HUGE. Certainly can fill you up. Their Oyster Rock is AMAZING as well and you can order them individually as well which is pretty cool. Great place for a nice classic upscale steakhouse meal.

Let me preface by saying that I am fully aware one has to pay a premium price for a good cut of meat in Charleston. While this is unfortunate and often disappointing for a guy from the Southwest where delicious steaks fall from the trees, that is just the way it is. Oak is a solid two to three star restaurant; and under absolutely no circumstances would it rate any more than three, given the current menu prices. For me, it simply misses the mark. I have been to Oak several times over the past few years. Although the restaurant is clean, well decorated, and understated-ly fancy, the food leaves something to be desired. Their claim to fame is the dry aged beef, and while it has a slightly different flavor than your fresh cut beef from the butcher, most diners will probably not be able to tell the difference...until you get the bill. At that point you will most certainly know the difference. A typical meal for four will run you half of an average mortgage payment, and while you will leave satisfied, I don't think it is worth the premium price. There are so many other options in Charleston for equally delicious food at much more reasonable prices; one being the other well known steak house on King street which is a much better choice. Having been to many many high end steak houses across the United States, Oak is not doing anything new or innovative with its menu. The obligatory lobster mac and cheese side dish is there, as well as many other staples a la Morton's/Perry's/Capital Grille. For Oak, the service and preparation are what you would expect but the bang for the buck just isn't there...and with a restaurant of this perceived caliber, that is simply a deal-breaker for me.

My fiancé and I decided to try Oak Steakhouse while in Charleston for the 1st time. Neither of us are really steak fans but we tried it anyways. BEST decision ever! We ordered the boneless rib eye and NY strip. Due to the temperature of the steaks the chef took longer to cook them but he was courteous enough to give us complimentary bacon jam crostini. DELICIOUS! I wanted a jar to take home. Also, a few minutes later the General Manager surprised us with a shrimp cocktail. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and the cocktail sauce had just the right amount of spice. The main course arrived a little while later but it was well worth the wait (and money). The meat was tender, temperature was dead on, and super moist. The steaks were very flavorful. No other steakhouse compares to this perfection on a plate. We also had truffle pomme frites which were also amazing. Our waiter was great. He never let our drinks go empty. I lost count of how many times he refilled our tea. He was very attentive throughout the entire service. Basically, this was the best steak dinner we have ever had and I can't wait to go back.

The food was AMAZING! The ambiance was great as well (minus the overly loud losers next to us!). Even though they are a steakhouse; they had very tasty non need options. I had the crab cakes; sooooo delicious. They were seasoned perfectly and there was more crab than filler. It was well worth the price. Our waiter was extremely courteous, knowledgeable, and attentive. We defiantly will return.

Delicious! Had the 8 oz filet. It was amazing! Cooked perfectly, cut like butter. Seasoning was delicious. Got the roasted mushrooms for a side- holy geez! So good! My mom got the steak and truffled pomme frites- wow! I kept eating hers! I ordered pumpkin bread pudding for dessert and it was heavenly. The server was wonderful. Very knowledgeable about food. Little on the pricey side, but definitely worth it. Next time I'm looking for something a little fancy I will be back here!

One of the best steaks I've ever had--the sides are great too (we had mac-n-cheese and brussel sprouts). There's nothing too innovative or off-the-wall, it's just a really great steakhouse. Easier to find parking around Broad St after 5 than on Upper/Middle King too!

27 years of bliss so me and my super hot wife went to Oak Steakhouse for the big day. I Yelped it of course and used the open table feature to make a reservation. Worked like a champ! We were early but they were ready for us and brought us to our table. Eric was our waiter. He was very knowledgeable but Heather and I had already pretty much made up our mind before we got there. She got a good glass of wine and I got a great local brew. For starters we got 6 of the Oysters Rockefeller. We thought they were fantastic. Oysters were not overcooked in them and the cheese was to die for. No spinach, but guess what. Did not matter. Maybe we should leave that out all the time. As a side we got the Truffle Frites. OMG, they were to die for! We just got back from France and I am a truffle freak and these were fantastic with a generous portion of truffle. Another smashing success. Our primary course was the Lobster Pasta and I ordered a Dry Aged New York Strip. I do not know that I have ever had that. Eric talked me into it. It was an anniversary so splurge. 12 Ounces of perfection. Buttery, almost cheesy taste to it. Melted in my mouth. My wife tried it as well(we shared) and thought it was heavenly. Her Lobster pasta was packed with lobster and really tasted fantastic with the fresh house made pasta. We were stuffed but were delighted to eat the complimentary desert they brought us. Picture will be posted. That with an Espresso made for a perfect ending to a perfect meal. Thanks Oak for the best dining Experience in America that we have experienced. You can spend as much as you want at the Oak. Our check was well under $200 even with 20%+ tip and we got more than we needed. I think that is a great deal for such quality service and product. For a special night I do not know how this could be topped.

Oak is situated in a beautiful historic building located on broad street by the provost dungeon. We arrived at Oak on the evening of Tuesday 12/23/2014. The atmosphere very nice in the restaurant. The wait staff was outstanding. Unfortunately there is NOTHING even remotely positive to say with regards to the food. While the prices of the food may seem high to some people, we did not have any problem with it. The steaks are priced between $45 to $58 dollars and come al la carte, which wasn't an issue its is because those prices and the al la carte theme is similar to RUTH CHRIS STEAKHOUSE. The similarities between OAK and RUTH CHRIS STEAKHOUSE END THERE. When our steaks were delivered to the table mine was cooler than normal - it's wasn't warm at all. My wife's steak was supposed to be cooked medium rare but it was charded / burnt in several places. The steaks taste no better than ones you would buy at a medium end Grocery store - (not Harris teeter or public - maybe bilo). This place had gone straight down hill since Bret left a few years ago. We can't wait until Ruth Chris opens next year in downtown charleston - hopefully it will put Oak Restaurant OUT OF BUSINESS BECAUSE THE STEAKS ABSOLUTELY SUCK. The wait staff was excellent - hopefully they will go to work at RUTH CHRIS when Oak goes out of business We are not the type of people to cause a scene at a restaurant. We prefer to pay our bill and leave our waiter a 30% tip. We vote with our feet and just don't come back. DO Yourself a favor and go ANYWHERE BESIDES OAK - hell I would choose Five Guys Burgers over them. By the way, we didn't bother eating pour whole steaks - we got them boxed up and went back and Ordered 2 pizzas from Dominos.

We took my sister and her husband,we had the cheese plate and scallops for starters. The scallops were absolutely phenomenal! My sister had the crab cakes which were the best any of us had ever eaten. My husband and my brother-in-law both had fantastic steaks- cooked medium rare and so flavorful and juicy! I had the seafood of the day, a grouper fillet, which was good, but a little dry. We finished by all sharing the chocolate cheesecake and the carrot cake- both were perfect portions and were decadent ends to the night. We will most definitely go back!!

If this were a chain restaurant I'd give it a couple more stars, but when you shell out $130 (on restaurant week at that) you expect something impressive. Didn't happen. My sweet onion bisque was essentially puréed milk and onions with a dash of sugar. I would not say the soup was cold, but it sue wasn't hot. I had the braised rib meat. While the sauce held out the meat was good enough I guess, but the last half was so dry it was squeaky. No lie, I had to sip some water to swallow the meat. Not good. My wife's salad was nothing to speak of. Her filet was nothing to rave about. Not sure what the fuss was about.

Wonderful steak...best ribeye I've had (sorry Bob). Wandered in Friday night... ate at the bar and had great service ..ended up ordering the ribeye and it was the most flavorful, tender, delicious steak . Only thing is serve the bread warm.

I had very high expectations prior to going to Oak, but I was kind of disappointed with the outcome. Pros: Service was outstanding. They were really accommodating to my friend who had a food allergy. The spicy strawberry margarita was tasty, but SUPER spicy, Ye Be Warned. S'mores dessert was delish. Kind of strange, but also really good. Bibb "wedge" was good, although not in a wedge. Pork shank was delish. Highly recommend that. Cons: Vidalia onion bisque- Ok, I understand that vidalia onions are super sweet, but this is crazy. Had one spoonful and was not interested in finishing it. I ordered my filet Medium, and was super disappointed when it came out presliced, especially since it was lukewarm by the time it got to the table. I get that it is supposed to be cool in the center, but it should come straight off the grill, and this did not. It was emphasized by my friend's pork shank coming out still steaming for a good 5 minutes after they set it down. It also didn't have as much flavor as I would've liked, but I guess I'm just spoiled by Halls Chophouse. Idk, maybe they were overwhelmed because of restaurant week, but for the price point I was just super disappointed.

The filet is the best i have had in the past year. Amazingly tender and medium rare perfectly. It was a bed of average mashed potatoes but the carrot tidbits were nice. The truffle fries are terrific and we ordered seconds of those bad boys. Chocolate cake is better than the brulee which is good but not great. Lovely ambiance. Come by. It's nice.

We were really excited to try this place for restaurant week. We were not impressed. Restaurants can either take restaurant week as an opportunity to find new loyal customers and try to knock your socks off, or they can treat you like a second-class citizen. Oak definitely fell into the latter category. Atmosphere: Probably the best part of the meal. Dark and romantic. Not too loud. Service: We weren't blown away. I noticed they would whisper to one another about us being here for restaurant week. Maybe nothing to it, but it didn't set a good tone. Food: For the (full) price, we would expect something amazing. We were very disappointed. They brought out pretzel rolls initially. They were over-the-top salty. I guess this was intentional but it was almost unbearable to our palates. The wife liked her salad, but nothing special. I got the onion soup with lump crab and it was, well, onion-y with just a pinch of lump crab. It was ok. The filet is where we were most disappointed (at a freaking steakhouse!!). They were pre-cut (probably to portion us down to "restaurant weekers"). They were slightly overcooked and because they were cut up they were cold before we had a chance to bite in. The side of spinach might have been soaked in oil and that's about it. Boring. The highlight of the meal was the mashed potatoes, but that's not saying much. Overall: Glad we just went for restaurant week rather than paying full price. We will definitely not be going back- even at a discount. We feel that if you are going to spend top dollar on a meal, it should be spectacular. There are a lot better restaurants out there at that price.

My girlfriend and I ate at Oak a couple of weeks ago while passing through Charleston on a road trip. We both love going to steak houses, this was not the only one on our trip, and had read up on it before going. We actually made a reservation for the wrong oak steakhouse in Texas, on open table, but the hostess was very pleasant and said it had happened often. Since it was later at night she was able to seat us and our waiter told us about their farm to table policy when he greeted us. The pleasant service ended there for the night. Our waiter started by bringing my girlfriend the wrong drink. He also never came to ask if we needed another drink and never gave us bread, which is my girlfriends favorite thing to eat at steak houses. We had to ask a bus boy for bread after our appetizers came out and eventually someone appearing to be a manager or owner came over to us and asked if we needed more drinks or water when she was checking on all of the guests. We also overheard the women next to us ask our waiter if pecans were an ingredient in one of the sauces her companion ordered, do to allergies, he told her it was a secret. She eventually tried the sauce and it did in fact have pecans. After using her epipen she had words with the waiter who was unapologetic and told her he didn't think she would try it, as he walked away. The food itself was very good. I had oysters on the half shell as my appetizer and the 35 day dry bone in rib eye as my main course, with bearnaise on the side. For sides we shared the succotash and bacon mac n cheese which were good. The broad and stormy drink I ordered was delicious but my girlfriends french martini was sub par (according to her). The bread, which were herb rolls, were pretty good but nothing special compared to other steak houses. While the food was good it seemed we got the end of the night scraps, perhaps a drawback of farm to table and getting there at a late time. My oysters were on the small side and they gave me a couple of extra to make up for it. My steak was FULL of fat. Not marbled, but full of fat. More fat than a $20 steak, let alone an $85 steak, should have. My girlfriends bibb salad was also noticeably smaller than those around us and looked more like a garnish than a salad. All in all I would say the food might be as good as the critics say, however the service we were given dropped my rating of oak from a high 4 to a 2.

Was very impressive from start to finish. I had the Ribeye Prime, cooked a perfect medium temperature. Aspargus was nice with the hollandaise sauce. I had the bordelaise sauce for the steak, which was very rich and sampled the bernaise. Both nice, in their own way. Sadly, no gluten-free deserts but after that steak and a quick trip to Jeni's splendid ice cream, I was set rather well.

I have taken my wife here a few times for special occasions. Every time great food and great service! They take pride in the name Oak Steak House. This time when we went it was to celebrate our anniversary. The steak was so tender and moist. My wife also had lobster tail. She said it was the best that she has ever had. When they brought out our desert each plate had happy anniversary written in chocolate next to the dessert. We will definitely be going back!

My husband and I went to Oak Steakhouse at the recommendation of a friend who lives in the Charleston area. In making the reservation for our dinner we indicated it was our anniversary and our first visit to the restaurant. The staff was sooo awesome and accommodating. We had requested a table by the window and they provided just what we asked. To our delight we were surprised with complimentary glass of champagne in celebration of our anniversary. Our meal was delivered with exemplary precision when we completed each course. My husband had to have their specialty $65 steak and said it was good but would not have it again. I'm not a steak person so I'd never try it. I was psyched to have fried lobster but was surprised to learn that the enter lobster was fried. O am used to a butterfly of the lobster shell outside the shell and deep fried. They tried to give me what I wanted but the tail was fried inside the shell which is a pain to fight with. All in all the lobster tail was a little on the small side but I liked that they tried. The quietness of the dining area was welcomed. We could have conversation and hear each other speak. There was background music but not overwhelming at all. Our waiter was delightful and great to speak with. His attentiveness was enough and he was very deliberate in attending to us. The entire staff did a great job and left us impressed.

We live in Mt. P. This was the first time we have been to Oak. We brought friends that have been to many quality steak houses and we all agree, Oak is amazing! Love the atmosphere and the NY Strip was tender and well seasoned. The service timing was perfect from beginning to end. We were on the third floor which was great because the first and second floors seemed a bit loud. Overall, an excellent dining experience.

To my knowledge there are three steak houses in Downtown Charleston. This is one and our second time here. Good. Definitely good. Our server was a bit tentative but earnest and effective. We did not have to wait at any point. My rib eye was delicious and a good generous cut. My daughter had chicken breasts that, she said, were as good as she'd had. The Calamari was very good. We skipped desert but really everything was delicious. I'll have to say that it did not snap like Hall's Chop House and the décor was a bit ordinary but we were in no way disappointed. Let me say this; I think the bar for steak houses is a lot lower in the southeast than in the northeast. The Oak Steakhouse would be pretty ordinary in New Jersey. Great in South Carolina. Culture is everything. At the end of the day, I am going to have to rank this number three in Charleston but good for sure.
