Wow; where to begin. How about by simply warning people NOT to visit this place. Shocked it has any meritable reviews whatsoever on Yelp. Went with a group from my office for lunch. It took 42 minutes for three sandwiches with potato chips and one salad to arrive. Were they busy? Haha, NO! For my Caprese salad, I specifically asked the waiter about the tomatoes - were they local farm tomatoes or the grocery store hot-house variety. After all, it's a two ingredient salad, so the tomatoes are kind of important - I was assured they were local, and even listened as the waiter went into great detail about how wonderful they were and that he personally snacks on them every chance he gets. Well, okay.... $14 food, tax & tip, a plateful of grocery store hot-house variety tomatoes, and some very low moisture not-so-fresh 'pizza topping mozzarella' later, I know why we were one of only a handful of tables in the place at lunchtime. What is sad to me is that this establishment is located on a bustling street within walking distance from the Market and more importantly, from the cruise ship terminal where every unsuspecting tourist navigates right by. Folks, believe me, Charleston is known for its food. There are reasonably priced options and light plates for lunch if you're saving room for a big fancy dinner. If given the choice, pass this place. I was born and raised in New York/New Jersey, so believe me, nothing about this place is New York, not one stitch of it. It exists mainly because it has been commercialized by tourists and without that commercialization would not still be in business in a town known for cuisine and first-rate customer service.

Cant recommend this place at all because the pizza was terrible. If you are down near this place and want pizza, do yourself a favor and go to Pizzeria Di Giovanni. I couldn't even bring myself to eat the leftovers because the pizza was that bad. And I love pizza! The waiter that seated/served us was very courteous and attentive to our needs so that was this place's only saving grace. If we didn't have such great service i would give this place 1-star because the pizza did not taste good and was extremely greasy.

Service is pretty bad. I came here for happy hour. We were two of 5 people in the whole place and we sat at the bar. They were out of most things we wanted to order, we had to ask for menus and chase staff down to order. The food was ok. We ordered arancini balls, which needed a little more flavor..maybe salt? They were also mushy. The meatballs were room temperature and tasted store bought rather than homemade; the tomato sauce seemed fresh though. My pepperoni slice was soggy and had too much cheese. Be prepared to chase down staff if you want to pay your bill or if you need anything. I recommend this place for a slice after a night of drinking but that's pretty much it.

We ordered the mother's pizza and it was delicious. We received quick lunchtime service on a weekday. The bathroom here was literally the cleanest I have ever seen a a restaurant or bar. We would definitely go back.

Have been there before a couple of times and it was good. Today, the pizza was greasy, doughy, and under cooked. The waitress was nice but didn't even notice that we weren't eating ANY of the food. Won't be going back. There are too many other good pizza places in Charleston!

I really don't understand the two star rating of this place. My wife and I visited here using a Living Social coupon and were very pleased with the meal and experience. We ordered a couple of meatballs as an appetizer and they were delivered promptly. They had very good flavor, nice sauce to cover them with and the only thing I would have changed would be to add more fresh basil leaves to the plate as those really spiked the flavor component when paired with the meatball/sauce. Our pizza (The NYCP special) was very flavorful, hot from the oven and we both appreciated that the bottom of the crust had a very nice crunch that complimented the toppings. We substituted banana peppers for the green peppers without any fuss and our server was exceptionally nice and attentive. Beer and drink selection was above average for a side pizza joint and the only thing I commented on was that the bar staff should have some room temp glasses available when they serve beers such as stouts and coffee/chocolate porters. Pouring these in an ice cold glass does not allow the full flavors of the beer to come through as well as a room temp glass would. The bartender was appreciative of my input and said she would pass it on to the manager. The price paid for a full medium pizza, meatball appetizer and two beers was well within reason for historic Charleston and they even offer delivery. No, it's not one of the high-brow, wood fired, farm-to-fork pizza joints but I think there are more than enough of those to go around in this city. This is just a nice, honest, NY pizza place to get a few slices of good pie with some beer to wash it down. Give it a try.

I love this restaurant. I eat here all the time. They have a wide variety of pizza and all of them are delicious. The staff are super friendly and always make great suggestions on what food to try. I can't say enough about how much I like their pizza. My friends and I head here whenever we craving a good slice. I would definitely recommend giving NYC pizza a try.

We had a Hawaiian pizza and a vegetarian pizza. They were both great! Would definitely come back. Beer took a while to get to us but nonetheless everything was great.

Came here last week with a couple coworkers and afterwards we all decided this would not be a repeat lunch place. The service started out pretty good but quickly deteriorated. The food all came out hot and portion sizes were big which was great however I was not a fan of their tomato sauce and the ricotta cheese in the calzone was oddly not hot even though the rest of the calzone was hot. There are much better places to try in Charleston if you are looking for pizza!

Do not go to this place unless you want horrible customer service. It deserves no stars. My parents and I walked by and thought food looked good. We walked in to see if we could eat outside and before we got a word in the bus boy/host told us it was going to be a few minutes in a rude tone. We let that go and waited outside as we had our dog with us. Mind you, the restaurant inside was pretty much empty. He came outside and cleared off a table and told us not to sit. My dad who is a retired disabled veteran ended up sitting at the table he just cleared. The guy came back outside, rolled his eyes and went back inside and told the waitress "I told those idiots 3x not to sit yet". I walked inside, told the waitress how extremely rude that man was and we were leaving because of him! I was so mad I wasn't thinking to speak with a manager so a few minutes later I called and was hung up on! Never ate there, never will! HORRIBLE!!!!!

I had a brief, yet perfect encounter with New York City Pizza. My wife and I were drinking a bottle of wine and smoking a cigar at Charlestowne Tobacco & Wine. We were getting a bit tipsy before our 8:00 dinner reservation and needed something to tide us over for about 90 minutes. I ran across the street, picked up a slice of cheese and sausage, and ran back to finish my cigar and enjoy. The pizza was good, not great (I am a Chicago guy who used to live in NYC), but was exactly what we wanted.

I went with my family over Labor Day weekend and it was horrible. My son and I ordered and after 10 minutes the server came back and said they didn't have the ingredients for our meal. I then ordered something simple.... PIZZA in a pizza place you should expect it to be good.. How wrong I was. I got three toppings and ordered 2 slices. I only got one slice. They threw the toppings on like a lunchable. The worst pizza I ever had. It seemed like they had a pepperoni pizza and threw my mushrooms and sausage and brought it to my table. I loved Charleston it was a great city but wow this pizza was bad. You would be better off getting a frozen pizza from a gas station!!

Excellent food, recommend the Marco Polo salad. Waitstaff is friendly. Only complaint is that the food takes a while, but it is made n house. Pizza comes by the (big) slice or the whole pie. Overall a nice place with a good atmosphere, especially on a Friday.

I am shocked to see this place has lower than 4 star reviews!! We stopped at this restaurant before out flight out of Charleston the other night and everything we had was amazing! Unfortunately, I can not speak for the pizza since we all ordered sandwiches but those were amazing!! The 'upsell' on the fries is well worth the extra $1! We couldn't stop eating them! But more so than the food, the service was beyond impressive! We were greeted right away and told to grab a seat anywhere, our waitress was at our table within a minute asking for drink orders, whenever we were near the bottom of our drink our waitress, or any server, would jump in to refill our drinks! If we are ever in the area, we will definitely be back. Next time for the pizza!

This place was ok. It was a later night after a few drinks when a bartender recommended this place to us for pizza. You can build your own slices, which is cool. I asked for one with chicken, onions, and jalapenos. Wow, they loaded on the toppings, but there was hardly any cheese or sauce, I am talking NONE. I do like a lot of toppings though. But they weren't that good. The chicken was dry and the other toppings just didn't seem fresh. the crust was good though. It would've been better had they included extra marinara or any sauce at that. The pizza was just too dry. Service was average. But is was a pizza place, so I didn't expect much. The red wine was not good, although I do not remember which one I got. This place is good if you are looking for an average late night bite.

Unfortunately, my first time to New York City Pizza is more than likely my last. Because it's located on East Bay in the heart of the city, this means that finding street parking is virtually impossible and of course there's no parking lot available for customers. Luckily the Cumberland Street Garage is closeby but for me this meant having to park on the sixth level or so (the roof) as the first few levels were all reserved spaces and the rest were all basically taken. The restaurant itself was interesting as it was in a nicely renovated old building. While the bar, dining area, and kitchen were all in very close quarters with one another, it all somehow worked. The staff there also seemed pleasant. Because I had ordered a pizza to go, it wasn't until later that I realized that all the trouble I had gone through wasn't worth it. I had ordered a BBQ Chicken Pizza (that included bacon pieces and a heavy dose of Jack Daniels BBQ Sauce). It's too bad that the chicken pieces looked and tasted like cut up Tyson's chicken tenders that had been overcooked while the crust was very bland. The entire pizza tasted like they had cooked it hours earlier that morning and then just rewarmed it. Actually my father and I shared this pizza at lunch in a downtown park and he completely agreed with me about the lackluster quality of the pizza. After having just yesterday tried DeSano Pizza Bakery (94 Stuart Street) for the first time and thoroughly enjoying their pizza and hospitality, the contrast between them and NYCP was like night and day.

FROM A LOCAL: We tried to give them a shot! Ended up walking out because they wouldn't let us order chicken fingers. That's right...chicken fingers! We ordered drinks and appetizers, then ordered a large pizza. My daughter wanted chicken fingers from the kids menu but ohhhhhh no she was older than 12."it's company policy you have to be under 12" Ok we will have a hot dog off the regular menu.... We don't have that tonight! They still wouldn't let us get the chicken fingers!?!? Really??? they are chicken fingers! So instead of letting us get a 5 dollar order of chicken fingers with our meals (mind you, we were ok with the no under 12 until they didn't have the other option available) spoke to the manager (pretty sure he was still able to order chicken fingers) he still wouldn't let us order them. So we walked out of the restaurant, our dinner order was already being prepared so they lost not only LOCAL customers but the food they had to throw in the trash. On a side note they were EMPTY in the heart of the historic district in the number one travel destination in the U.S. That should tell you everything you need to know. That and the 2.5 stars they are rated on Yelp! SOUTHEND BREWERY was great! Accommodating and brought us a dessert on them!

I had a fantastic experience at New York City Pizza! The atmosphere was awesome, the amount of food we got was excellent for the price, and the service was wonderful! The Philly cheese steak was delicious! My friend had left her wallet at another store and our waiter was extremely accommodating. Another thing that stuck with me was that other waiters made sure we were doing well. They appeared to work together and it made for a very positive experience! I'm not from Charleston and it made me feel very welcome! I definitely recommend!

Pizza was enjoyable. Sweet sauce, so if ya don't like that, this isn't for you. Tasted fresh, and was served in a timely manner. However, the manager on duty, Andrew, was extremely unprofessional. He loudly yelled, "I'm sick of this shit" where customers could hear it, and was having what should have been a private conversation about an employee leaving early with another employee on the main floor. Our server, Ashley, was a doll. Super attentive and sweet. Overall, the food is fine, but that manager needs some training. Or a hug.

They deserve no stars. Went there with 5 people, no one around at entrance so, we sat down, young man came over said there is a waiting list. Told him there was no one at the door when we entered, and I did not see any people waiting. Gave him my name, he asked for my phone number, asked why, he said this is how we contact you when table is ready. I said no, and that we we're just outside the door, 4 ft away. He looked at me like I was crazy, and said this is how we do it. Said he cannot guarantee a table!! Why should I give a number, so he can text useless info to me or search for my address for more useless info, no thanks. I never have been asked this in any establishment that I have gone into. On their 6th day of being officially opened, I was running an errand on East Bay and I decided to stop by for a to-go order. I'm one of the most sympathetic people when it comes to food and bev woes. It takes a lot for me to not tip at least 20% and I still get the occasional "in the weeds" nightmare from my several years of being a server and bartender. That's all to say that I knew they had just opened so I was prepared going in. Were they a well-oiled machine completely on the ball? Nope and I would've been completely dumbstruck if they were. That comes with time and what they lacked in general attentiveness they more than made up for in friendliness. The two guys that were working when I went were super nice despite being run ragged. I was wanting to get a salad for lunch but I figured since this was my first visit, I should forego that and test out the pizza. I went with one of their daily specials which included a slice of pizza with two toppings (I chose pepperoni and black olives), a side salad and a soda for $7.95. I also threw in an order of Arancini (fried rice balls) that were super tasty but I would've preferred a more crispy breading. The pizza is pretty good, solid but not amazing. It kind of reminds me of Sbarro pizza but slightly better. Ugh, the side salad. No bueno. It consisted of lettuce, a few shredded carrots and tomato. I don't do raw tomatoes so I was left with lettuce and an Italian dressing I didn't really care for. I hate to compare but in this case, for around the same price, D'Allesandro's does the same type of deal and their side salad is crazy. It comes with mozzarella, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, peppers, black olives, cucumbers and possibly some other stuff I'm forgetting. I'm not saying NYC Pizza has to go all out but what's a girl gotta do to get a little onion and cuc on her salad?

The pizza here is out of this world! I always enjoy it and have never had any issues here. My family is from Hilton Head Island and I was glad the day they opened one of these up here! It's reasonably priced too and the orders usually come out pretty quickly.

I get excited when I see NY Style pizza places pop up..but I was a little disappointed with this place. Perhaps they're still working out the kinks because they've only been open for ten days, so take my review into consideration. Either way, you can't improve your business without a little constructive criticism. First thing I noticed was the decor. It was was warm and inviting and very clean. Our server, Matt was super nice and very accommodating. The menu had a good variety of items...but the pizzas (which the name suggests should be their main attraction) were all located on the back..as if they were a last resort in case you didn't find anything else before that. The specialty pizzas aren't sold by the slice but you can add toppings at $0.50 each. We weren't prepared to spend $20 for a whole pie that we haven't even tried, so we ordered by the slice. I got a plain cheese to test the pillar of the menu ($2.50/slice). I mean if you start off bad, anything else you add won't make it any better. My husband ordered a pepperoni, and my son ordered the kids chicken fingers w/chips(which were $6.95..pretty pricey for a kid). Pizza wasn't even an option on the kids menu. :/ and also ordered the fried Zukes. The food came rather quickly! Zukes were crispy and flavorful. The chicken fingers were super thin (I assumed they just cut up the chicken meant for chicken parmigiana) and bland, and the pizza was meh. Definitely NOT a New York pizza. It was about the thickness of a Chuck E Cheese Pizza. The sauce wasn't too impressive either. Almost like plain tomato sauce from a can. It needs improvement. Maybe more fresh herbs..more oregano?? Anything. I feel bad for this review bc the staff was super nice. But if you can't find room for improvement, your business will fail. I hope this helps. Good luck!

When we finally got the attention of the wait staff, they were quite friendly. Despite this, service was pretty slow. It took awhile to get our drinks served. Then it took awhile for our two pizzas: plain cheese and their white pizza. Left feeling underwhelmed, but it was cheaper for our family of six for lunch versus the other restaurants in the same area.

Not the best pizza in Charleston, surprising because this is actually a chain which has managed to make it elsewhere. Veggies were fresh, but the cheese was skimpy, the dough was really tough and it was basically flavorless. Also expensive-$43 for two pies. Bummer for them because they spent a lot of $$$ on renovations.

For months I didn't try this restaurant due to its reviews. Finally, my husband and I decided to give it a try. What a pleasant surprise! We were greeted with a warm welcome. We had our drinks within a few minutes. Our server was very knowledgeable, and very friendly! We split an eggplant parm sub and some Bbq pizza. As New Yorkers, we know pizza will never be as good as it is in our home state. However, this sure satisfied any cravings we had. It came out within a reasonable amount of time and tasted great! We moved to downtown Charleston a few years ago, and are always looking for new places to eat. They treat their locals great here! We will for sure be back again!

I see that a review that I posted several months ago was removed to the NOT recommended reading part of the OVERALL ratings of this place I strongly suggest that you take time to read ALL the posts regarding this place as I see that my GF was not the only person threatened and harassed by "Andrew" the manager of this Pizza joint .. Not sure how this type of BEHAVIOR is NOT relative to a restaurants rating and overall dining experience. Anymore than I can believe that ANY business places someone like this in charge. WOW!! This manager Andrew is a loose cannon ..rude and agressive coward ...and I am not surprised to see other comment about this.. "WE" ACTUALLY HAD TO CALL THE POLICE. Just THINK how many people have had this type of experience and NOT taken the time to write about it here? BTw....did I mention that my girlfriend is handicapped and only wanted to sit INSIDE at a table with here 12 pound service dog... BUT..ANDREW..(you F'n cowardly piece of trash) told her that "people like her" needed to sit outside....??? And ..the next day when she stopped in to ask your name. You chased her down the street and started sceraming insults and got so agressive that she was FORCED to push you away from her... WHO screams at a handicpped person that if they "apologize" to you you might let them "have a slice of pizza" BEWARE.......

I grew up in an Italian family that owned pizzerias up north. I worked in pizza joints through high school. I know pizza. I love pizza. I am addicted to it. And during the last decade I have lived in Charleston I have suffered through poor to mediocre pizzeria experiences time and again. Not anymore. This place has it. It is, without qualification, the best pizza I have ever had in this town. Yes the ambiance is fun and festive. Yes the staff and management are very friendly. But this review is really about the pizza. And I loved it. Its on the short list of places in town you can actually get a quality, thick and crunchy Sicilian style pizza.

Very surprised at the low reviews here. I've been to NYCP three times now and think it's one of the top couple pizza spots in town. Everyone I've been with has agreed, so I'm a little suspicious of some of these reviews.

Manager needs to be fired and the incompetent "server" also!! Made the mistake of stopping here on the 4th of July with my family and the place is just an outright JOKE!! Being that it was the 4th, we were told that there would be a 45 min wait for our party of 5. So we patiently sat at a table outside. Since there was plenty of available tables outside, we asked if we could eat there. We were told they did not have enough staff on and were too busy. We finally got our table 45 min later. I noticed that the place was not really busy inside. We asked the server what would be the quickest way to eat and run. We wanted two large pies. He said it would be 30 min since they were "busy". HE, suggested we order by the slice since it would be quicker. We did. I had to ask for the beer I ordered a few times again. The server rudely told me just a few minutes. I walked up to the bar and paid for a beer right then and there in less than a minute. 5 minutes later I saw him walking by, we were there 15 min at the table already, I told him I got my own beer. 40 min later, we asked for our slices. He then started with an attitude saying they were busy and understaffed, a common theme as table by table started complaining. At 50 min, we asked for our food to be boxed so we could leave. We were told it was not ready yet. We asked how much longer? At that point, it got ugly. The server said he could not say, that he had already told us it was going to be a wait. The same server who told us we could get heat and serve slices in just a few minutes. We asked for our check, and then the "manager", an ungroomed man in shorts started screaming at us saying we were going to wait for the food, we could have it to go, but were going to pay. We told him we would love to pay and have our food to go, so please give it to us... He then started getting in our faces saying it was not ready, that we were on camera, and that he was calling the cops since we were "walking out". At that point, my 5 year old niece started crying, the "manager" was screaming, confrontational, and borderline violent. He made no attempt to resolve the problem. He just kept saying "NO NEGOTIATIONS! I'm calling the cops on you!" At that point, after trying to reason with this rude loudmouth, who actually made my niece afraid, I showed him how a REAL New Yorker responds at this phony NY pizza joint. I started screaming back at him at the top of my lungs!! Then I got in his face! And wouldn't you know it, he put his tail right between his legs. I told him I WAS NOT PAYING FOR A DAMN THING!! I grabbed my family and left, he came out for 2 seconds to try and follow us and get a few last words in. I immediately told him to back off and not threaten my family or I would lay him out. He ran right back in. Customers were leaving in droves at this point. Just an all around joke. Whoever owns this place, you need to clean house with this incompetent, rude, borderline wannabe violent manager and weak staff. Sorry I cannot comment on any food and it had to be about this joke of a staff

Table of 9 at 2pm in the afternoon and the place was dead. All of our orders came twenty minutes apart. The zucchini sticks took an extra 20 minutes. The pizza was just okay. One meatball on the spaghetti. At least the server was nice but it was all unbelievably slow. Would not do this again, the food was not worth it.

By far the worst pizza I have ever had. We order two pies with 4 starving people and had about a pie and a half left. I would have sent it back if not for everyone else. The grandmas pie is not a grandma pie. The sauce is terrible, straight out of a can. Gives REAL New York City a bad name. We showed up towards the end of the evening, but came across an apparent pizza shortage. Fairly disappointed with the service, considering they wanted an extensive amount of praise for an exclusive commodity for pizza joint.

Service was great but the food was disgusting. My wife and i barley ate any of our food.

As a regular pizza joint, I would say maybe rate higher... but for a specifically New York style pizza joint, I'm thinking more like 1.5-stars at most (adding .5 for ambience because of the nice interior decor). No flavor in anything. The slice was TINY for a Large, it looks like it was cut from no bigger than a 16" pie. This restaurant's pizza is closer to Cici's than Sbarro's, and I put Sbarro's smack dab in the middle of my NY-style pizza scale. Literally around the corner is Giovanni's, where we've only gone three times, but there was marked difference even if only by memory. I would rather go to Giovanni for the huge slice and the NY-style texture and flavor, since they're so close to each other. Andolini's (which I'm not even a huge fan of), Sbarro's (mall pizza), and Sabatino's (also downtown) are all picks I place over New York City Pizza, but are in different spots around town. (My family and I are from NY/NJ, and this pizza does NOT take me there.)

Stopped in just walking down the street. So glad we did. Service was excellent and very friendly. Started with Italian fries. Totally crispy and sprinkled with Parmesan. The deep dish pizza was terrific. I liked the sauce as it was not sweet or thick, reminded me of a home made spaghetti sauce. The kind of pizza you dream of when you want a late night snack. Chicken philly on the grilled baguette and creamy cheese was cooked to perfection. Very happy overall and will return.

Terrible, cardboard pizza. Wouldn't ever order again. Had a pepperoni and a cheese pizza & both were a pretty sad excuse for pizza. Not even close to New York pizza!
