I love meatballs. I order them everywhere i go bc everyone makes them differently and theres alot that goes into a quality meatball. The meatballs here tastes a little processed but the presentation was awesome. There was cheese stuffed in the middle and the sauce is fresh. Also tried a piece of mushroom pizza. Wouldnt recommend (mushrooms were so so) but the crust is really good. Just the right amount of crispy. Crust was honey wheat and baked perfectly. Ill be back next time im down south. Best part of my night...left the restaurant and my car went missing! (If you find it message me - hmh0160)

Kudos to this place for always being open late and really the only place in this area serving late night food that is REALLY DELICIOUS. Sometimes on late night shifts you go to a place and their entrees don't come out of the kitchen as good as a visit earlier in the day, but not here! My favorite area is the bar area upstairs and patio. The patio doesn't have a view of much but they made it a nice environment to hang out. Also, props to the bartender who served us-excellent job.

Short review: love this place, wonderful bar service and great beer selection. Long review: I'm in town for one night and want to eat at a good place and drink some beer. I type "beer" + "charleston sc" into yelp and up pops mellow mushroom. It's fairly close to where I'm staying so I decide to try it. Sat upstairs at the bar and decided to get the Allagash Black Ale on tap. Delish. Bartender is super-polite and cool. I ordered the "Magical Mystery Tour" pizza which is mushrooms, spinach, jalapenos, cheese and a pesto sauce, along with some tortilla soup. Soup is good, fairly spicy. Pizza is OK, somehow lacking a bit in the taste department. Best part is that the bartender told me the beer I got was one of his favorites. Next on my list to try was the Coastal IPA since it's local. So I ask what else he recommends, and he says the Coastal IPA. So I tried it and it was yummy. I always think when the bartenders have good taste, you're at a good place to drink. I'm not sure of the local liquor laws, but the restaurant has two floors, a dining area downstairs and a bar upstairs, and to drink you had to go upstairs. Because of this it's fairly kid-friendly.

For a chain, I found this place (as well as the other locations in the south I visited) to be pretty darn good and serving up combinations very different from the expected fare. Most memorable for me was the excellent jerk chicken, available on a pizza or in a sandwich.

A fun restaurant. The food is amazing, everyone should try their homemade pretzel appetizers. The service is good, upstairs there is a TV for every direction you turn your head. Anyway the atmosphere is definitely fitting to the restaurant title, very psychedelic. You'll have a great little time here, just hope there aren't obnoxious college kids there when you do go.

I got carry out and all of the food was delicious! I ordered the Magical Mystery Tour and I spilt it with a friend. I don't like mushrooms or jalapeños so we ordered it half without them both. It came with both on all of the pizza. I picked them off and it tasted just fine, but that was still annoying. Next to that, the pizza was well priced and made in a good time. I would go back again, but double check no mushrooms and peppers.

Great pizza! We ordered half buffalo chicken and half kosmic karma. Both were great! Waitress was nice and attentive as well. I had a coupon to use here but was told I couldn't use it because it wasn't my "home location". Oh well!

Having tried and enjoyed the pizza at the Mellow Mushroom in Savannah, GA, my wife and I were pleased to see this place while strolling down King St. in Charleston, SC last week. We enjoyed the food here so much that we came back a second time during our stay. I find the pizza unique to the Mellow Mushroom and not at all like what you'd find in the Northeast. The cheese and toppings were quite good (pepperoni and mushrooms), but the crust is the best part of these pies. An added bonus was a nice selection of draft beers - I had the Revelry Hotel Rendezvous which was a nice surprise. During the second visit I tried a carnie burger (an experimental item with a vegetarian option, that may make it to the regular menu). It was also quite good. So juicy and tasty that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. The staff was friendly and attentive. My only criticism was the lack of cooling in the restaurant itself. With the high heat and humidity it could have definitely been cooler inside.

Pretzels were awesome. They were Out of budlight miller light and PBR. Bottom of large pizza was burnt. Server was nice. Clean atmosphere. But the Burnt $21.00 pizza just ruined the whole experience.

Such a cool place to hang out and eat pizza with friends. The awesome decor distracts you from the somewhat-long wait times between ordering and getting your food. Lunch specials are great. Staff is nice. Restaurant is clean. Request a space upstairs for the best atmosphere. Menu Highlights: - The Boot (a pie for arugula lovers) - Buffalo Chicken Pizza - Bayou Blue (with shrimp!) Great for larger parties. Prices are decent for downtown lunch and dinner. Great place for families, too.

Came here for lunch one day and had a great experience. Jessica was a great waitress and my pizza came out nice and hot. Good lunch specials, would come back.

Pizza was great! Had a 1/2 Buffalo Chicken and 1/2 House Special, both were great, awesome flavor. If you're looking for ultra authentic Brooklyn style pie then you might be put off but that's not what they advertise. Service was a bit slow but polite and attentive, recommend getting a starter if they're busy because the pizza could be a bit long coming, but we'll worth the wait!

Always wanted to go to this restaurant in Kennesaw, GA but didn't get a chance. We went in Charleston and loved it. Found out there is one in Greenville too.

I've come here for the Virginia Tech football viewing parties. Mellow Mushroom is very accommodating for all the Hokie fans. The 2nd floor is reserved and all the TVs feature the game. Mellow Mushroom has great atmospheres but when you add alumni rooting for the same team, it gets even better. They offer a special happy hour for the games like $2 PBR, $3 house liquor and $3 fireball shots. The coolest option is you can bring in a VT cup up to 27oz and fill it with beer for the price of a pint. The food is always good. Pizza is always the way to go. My favorites are buffalo chicken and kosmic karma. I'll have to make it out to Mellow Mushroom on a non-gameday soon!

Come here, get GREAT PIZZA (and beer), but be careful what "herbs" you get on your PIZZA.. you may become quite mellllloooowwwwww. When things start to move in slow motion... you know you got the special pie.... This place is A-OK, just as the 3-star review indicates. A few helpful hints: Definitely go upstairs, on the outdoor patio (if weather permits), get some craft beer and a Holy Shiitake Pie or Thai Dye! Like many places, the review incorporates MANY things. For example, the Holy Shiitake Pie and Thai Dye are definitely 5-Star items! The craft beer selection is 4 or 4.5 stars and outdoor, upstairs dining is a 4-star item. Unfortunately, I've never had great service here, it's always been just ok, and some of the non-pizza menu items are pretty mediocre (so stick with the pizza). So, I've eaten here MANY times throughout my time in Charleston and it is a great "go to" pizza and beer place. It usually satisfies the diverse tastes of a large group and the upstairs and outdoor patio are a real TREAT! There is an above-average craft beer selection, which is always a big PLUS and some really unique pies! This is their round house. Stick with the PIZZA's. They are cool, unique, creative, inspired and awesome! Be adventurous and try a Crazy, non-traditional PIE.... live on the edge! you won't regret it! (well, you may.... but that's between you and YOUR yelp review).

Awesome pizza although not real ny style for the pizza snob purists but really really good just the same. They sprinkle a little parmesean :cheese on the crust before baking which is a nice touch. We only had a cheese pizza worth bacon on half but their specialty press will be tried on our next visit. The Thai sounded really good. Service was excellent. I also recommend the spinach salad. Feta cheese, dried cherries, green apples and pecans wroth a balsamic dressing was to die for!

  • Brent A.

Greek Salad: 4/5 excellent. Lettuce could have been better but that's what u get when u order iceberg. Would order again 100% Beer: 5/5 great selection. Lagunitas IPA was beer of the month so $3 a pint. Steal. Also the flights 4 5oz beers for $6.50 is a better deal than buying a pint for $6-8 so consider doing the flight as a sneaky way to not only try new beers but do it at a cheaper price than getting a pint. Also all the tv's are around the bar except for a big projection above the kitchen. Nice place to watch sports one of the best in the west Ashley area.

There are 3 levels of seating and one of those is outside! The pizza is always amazing and the servers are great. They are knowledgeable about the food and extremely patient when a 3 year old is trying to order is own food!

Superbly made pizza, friendly service, funny art on the walls which is great:) I hardly ever eat the crust of a pizza but this one was so good - I couldn't stop eating it. I got the holy shiitake pizza with bacon on the suggestion of my waitress and she nailed it!

Brought a few friends here a few days ago and they loved it. We ordered the mighty meaty pizza( I think that's what it was called) that had every meat available on it. The large comes with 8 slices! They have a large selection of craft & domestic beers on draft. You won't be disappointed.

First of all the menu online touted that Mellow Mushroom had gluten free options but when we got there at 7 pm on Sunday night the waitress said they were sold out of all the gluten free pizza crusts. Seriously?!? So we made do, but then the waitress came back and said they had one crust left which they were saving for us. Great. Then the manager came to the table to inform us that the waitress was mistaken and the restaurant had in fact run out of the gluten free crust completely ergo sorry for the confusion. Needless to say I'm getting lost and confused typing this story, let alone reliving it. But three stars for the food we did order (it was alright, but not memorable) and the fact that they comped some of the meal.

I grew up in NJ and am partial to New York style pizza. We were big fans of Andolini's which is now closed. This was good, not great, but the soft doughy crust was delicious. I would give a 3.5 if I could. But not a 4 in my opinion.

  • Liz B.

Hands down one of the best gluten free pizzas I have ever had from a restaurant. I got the Kosmic Karma, gluten free and was instantly in love with the elasticity and chew of the crust, the perfect balance of gooey mozzarella, salty feta plus the tangy mix of ingredients. The pizza was pretty huge for one person and was easily two meals. Pricing was a little steep but honestly being gluten free I have come to expect that in general so I wasn't too shocked that my bill was around $22 plus tip for the pizza and a glass of water. The place was cute and the waitress was attentive and sweet with wicked cool eye make-up.

Have not been here in a long time. Came here last night to celebrate my sisters awards from the coast guard. Ordered the pretzels for an app and man were they delicious! We each ordered 10 inch personal pizzas. I got the buffalo chicken one. It was so so good. Couldn't eat it all in one sitting. Glad I have lunch for today!

LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Every time I get to the South it is a requirement to have Mellow Mushroom. On Monday nights they have a deal that small build-your-own pizzas with one topping are $5. We ended up ordering three and it was perfect.

Great gluten free pizza option in Charleston. Great service. Even the salad dressings were GF. This isn't just gf dough cooked in the same oven, they have separate aprons, gloves, prep area, ingredients, and cooking space. Definitely would recommend for anyone craving GF pizza. $18 each and be prepared to have one (8 slices of thin crust) per person.

  • Petunia Rose H.

Holy crap! What good pizza! The crust is so good, you can eat it by itself. They also have salads and sandwiches that are definitely worth trying. Between 11am and 2pm there is a $7 lunch special! To top it all off..the beer selection is superb:) If you haven't been...go!

I've returned to Mellow Mushroom several times since my first visit and now have had quite a sampling of different pizzas. Plus I've gone to quite a few OTHER places for comparison's sake. Since Mellow Mushroom has come out on top as one of my absolutely favs, I think a bump up to five star is warranted. I do think it might be my go-to place from now on! Plus way back when in December, we got pizzas from Mellow for the Christmas party at work and it was well liked by all, so that gets points too!

Was visiting charleston, sc. The hotel recommended this place due to the gluten free option my friend was looking for. All the pizzas we ordered were amazing. I highly recommend.

This review is mostly based on bar visits with to go orders. The pizza is pretty good but on the pricey side, at least not greasy like the typical delivery places. (Of course it is impossible to find "real pizza" in the U.S; I am talking about the paper thin crust personal pizza that is baked in a wood fired brick oven. A few simple fresh ingredients without crazy crust and outrageous toppings. If you haven't been to Italy or at least Europe you won't know what I am referring to). Ok, I am picky, I grew up in Europe and lived in Italy for a few years. I love the beer selection on tap and am always excited to see German brews such as my beloved Franziskaner.

    (4)
  • N T.

The best gluten-free pizza crust I've had. I had a speciality pizza that was part of their trial pizzas. Too bad they jack their prices so high just because it's gluten-free.

So, apparently Mellow Mushroom is a thing in the South (native Midwesterner and adopted Northeasterner, here)? Whatever -- I love it! Nothing beats delicious pizza with a wide selection of beer. Split a large pizza three ways, and you have a decently-priced meal. What keeps me from rating this place higher is the utterly slow service. Service aside, this place easily hits the 4-star mark. Oh, and the don't expect much from the "rooftop deck" here. It's just an elevated platform lol.

  • Millard Z.

The Mellow Mushroom is a great pizza place in Charleston and should not be missed if you're in the mood for some mellow pizza. The staff was friendly and the food was super. They also had large TV's all around so checking out the Giants W in the World Series made a day of the Citadel, Kiawah Island and checking out the South complete.

Great pizza joint with tasty salads and sandwiches. Tons of craft beer as well as crappy beer. Fun atmosphere with friendly service. Nice patio out back for sunny days. Outstanding wings and good appetizers. Probably my favorite place in Charleston for wings. I tried the red skin potato pie for the first time today and it was possibly the best pizza they make.

We stopped in for lunch yesterday. The murals in the restaurant are way cool, the place seems really laid back. We came during a rush and it seemed chaotic, not relaxing and welcoming at all. Buffalo chicken pizza was okay - the smallest size feels really small since it's cut in 4 pieces. Dough seemed like it was more whole wheat than white. Generously topped with chicken, buffalo sauce seemed different than the usual Franks Red. I had the steak sandwich, expected to get a cheesesteak but instead it was chunks of steak, lettuce, fried onion, mayo and tomato covered in cheese then put under the broiler. I got the half sandwich for 6.99. Again - filing but seemed like a small portion. Overall, we paid more than $20 and felt like we got little to eat.

We hit up Mellow Mushroom twice during our stay in Charleston. It was close to where we were staying & it turned out to be pretty darn good. First time was takeout for our kids...pizza with pepperoni, peppers & onions with garlic-Parmesan pretzels & a couple of cokes. Service was fast & friendly. I saw that they had a nice craft brew selection when I picked up. It also smelled amazing in there...like pizza heaven. Second time was after baking ourselves in the sun on a harbor tour. We arrived sweltering & parched. Service again was friendly & attentive. Kids cokes were bottomless. Beers (Natty Green Elm St & Palmetto Homefront) were chilled. Kids stayed with another exactly-the-same pizza that they demolished. Husband had the Holy Mole Hoagie. I had a Mel's Fattie...a giant chicken enchilada event. I know, I know...choosing Mexican at a pizza joint but both were excellent... loaded with chicken & flavor. Very nicely done. We sat on the 2nd floor this time which has a bar & lots of tvs making it our backup World Cup spot. A good stop on King St.

Good Dinner tonight! Wife and I split a Capri Salad that was perfectly prepared... Room temperature mozzarella, good tomatoes, fresh basil and decent balsamic. Pizza was a good balance. Good crust and sauce with fresh toppings. Beer was awesome. Their bartender was great. My wife had a few different mixed drinks and she loved them. We got out for $60 including tip. Can't beat that on King Street in Charleston.

Driving through Charleston during a road trip, checked out some stores on King St. and walked into this place to grab a quick bite to eat. I'm not a big pizza fan, but I did very much enjoy their food. Had the HOLY SHITAKE MUSHROOM pie .. lol... soooooo yum! Ate the whole thing on my own including the crust. :) They had a nice selection of unique pies to choose from along with the regular pizza items. The atmosphere is fun... Great place to have some pizza and beer on a nice afternoon or to meet up with some friends. Service was ok. The waitress was nice, a little too "mellow" lol... Hostess that seated us didn't smile nor greeted us when we came in until we asked for a table. Maybe it's a find your own seat type of place? Overall...i would come back if I'm in the area... thanks!

Stopped in here while walking King Street to relax and grab some beers. We are new to Charleston, and the bartender gave us a few great recommendations on local brews. Their beer selection here is vast! We didn't get food this time, but I've had Mellow Mushroom pizza before and it is always good. Great location, great beer selection, and great price. We'll be back!

  • Cassandra B.

I joined a large group of friends here for dinner and was pleasantly surprised to see they have vegan cheese and lots of good veggie toppings. I ordered whatever the standard vegetarian pizza was and subbed vegan cheese, which they didn't charge extra for (awesome!). The pizza was good but I'm still snobby after a trip to Italy last year so I'm not really impressed with any pizza I've had since. :) The staff was friendly and it was a great environment for a large group. Charleston isn't known for vegan food so I'd definitely stop back again.

I don't normally review chains, but this place is just so much fun. The decor is always crazy, the pizzas are amazing and the beer selection is phenomenal, there's a good reason there's mellow mushrooms all over the south.

    (4)
  • Drew E.

As far as psychedelic-themed-college-town-founded-turned-widespread-regional-chain-pizza places go, you could do worse. The pizzas are always very good and they've always had a good selection of "specialty pizzas."

  • Travis R.

Always love stopping in a Mellow Mushroom when I come by one. If you've never stopped in it is a must. The crust alone will make you love it. Got the Maui wowie pizza and it was delicious. You can't beat the combos they come up with. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Quick service.

I would have thought I was on 6th street in Austin when I entered this place. We were seated promptly on the bottom level. It took a few minutes for someone to come check on us even though the place was less than half full. I ordered a meatball hoagie with chips. I was expecting some sort of house made chips but I got a bag of Aunt Vickie's chips. I like them so it wasn't too bad. The sandwich was ok not the best but not the worst I have had. The star for me was the cookie sundae. We got a peanut butter cookie with vanilla ice cream and whipped topping. It was really good and more than enough for three of us to share.

  • Mister W.

The food is way too expensive for the portions. The beers are outrageously overpriced. The wait staff acts like they are too cool for school. And just like every other Mellow Mushroom that I have eaten in Charleston and Summerville this one is also ridiculously slow. I'd rather just go to Gilroy's

    (1)

Very hipster like all the others. I really liked the Edison style lamps they had in the windows. Food was on point as it always is.

  • Colleen J.

Ahhh, Mellow Mushroom, you have become the Hard Rock of pizza, yet with notably superior beer selections. I like Mellow Mushroom. It's reliable and -- simply put, you know what the #$%* you are getting. Their pizza is delish - especially for a chain, and the atmosphere relaxed, as a solid pizza joint should be. This location is convenient after a day of wandering on King Street and the service is just right. It is highly recommended for those times when the mid-day shopping carb craving hits you. It's a real thing.

I work at the Charlotte nc location so I came here to check out the vibe for charleston. It didn't fail! Awesome atmosphere and great bar scene, cool patio outside and a sweet decor as all mellows have. Just had a beer so I can't speak for the menu but the vibe and staff was great!:)

  • Sydney G.

$2 beer of the month during happy hour? Yes please. Service is always top notch, and I love the pizza, especially the crust. Best ever. They also have really good hummus, spinach artichoke dip, and pretzels (get garlic parmesan with the beer cheese!) My favorite pizza is a build-your-own: pepperoni with roma tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. Of their specialty pies, I love the Gourmet White and the Kosmic Karma. So good!

  • Jilna K.

Visited this location on a day when they were understaffed, so it took a long time for our food to come out. Our waitress and the manager were very gracious and comped our pizza, and apologized profusely. Food was good, pizza was piping hot, and they get bonus points for service and being honest! We loved the rooftop seating as well. Nice place for a casual dinner.

    (4)
  • David M.

This visit was not for food but booze ! Got there right at the tail end of happy hour (6:55) so was able to one up before prices stabalized. Happy hour or not, their beer pricing is great and they always have a beer of the month for a whopping 2 dollars. Gotta dig deep. At the end of the night, if you end up fancying the place you'll have already started your initiation into the beer club. 100 beers in a year and you'll get bigger and custom beer mugs for the same price as the simple folks. As I write this I'm still simple but I plan on drinking 97 beers next week so cheers! ...Cool upstairs bar and great vibes.

Interesting pizza choices. If you want some thing a little better then peperoni stop in. They have beer of the month.

Best pizza I have had in a long time!!!! Expensive but well worth it. We had the Holy Shiitake.

    (5)
  • Danielle M.

Delicious pizzas! We had the Holy Shiitake; the flavor of the pizza was very good. I'm a sucker for anything truffle and it did followed through in that category, but we did think that there could have been more mushrooms. My husband and brother in law had the Funky Q chicken; they said that it was good but that it was a little dry. We also shared a Greek salad with their Esperanza dressing. The dressing was very good, it had a nice herb flavoring.

Mellow mushrooms is soooo relaxing, cuz it has the rooftop terras. The pizzas and bruschettas are just so wel made and the cheff puts a ton of detail in making the plate. Everything is fresh!

  • Dorothy R.

I just love the giant mushrooms on the wall right when you walk in the door. The atmosphere and the music compliment the name "mellow mushroom". The pizza is not bad either. I got the red potato skin pizza pie topped with caramelized onions, applewood bacon, and you guesses it, potato skins. One thing that was right up my alley is the fact that this big pizza slice is drizzled with ranch. Anything with ranch is worth trying and has got my vote.

  • Selphyne B.

First had this in Austin, Tx so it was nice to find one here when we moved! This location is consistent to the MellowMushroom chain. So delicious, my favorite is the holy shiitake pie! Their caprese salad is pretty good, and so are their pretzels! Their crust is so generous though, no need to order pretzels with crust like that, but you definitely need to order their beer cheese sauce and side of spicy mustard to dip your crusts in if you find yourself craving the pretzels and still wanting pizza! I love their creative flavors and their ability to have something for just about anyone! Still haven't gotten to try their mushroom soup, but it is on my to do list! Ps: the new Summerville location isn't as good :( so sad!

Good food. Horrible service. We were very ignored by our server over and over again. We were seated and not given menus for at least 5 minutes after being seated. Our food arrived and we had no plates. Then after they brought us plates we didn't have enough. We had to find a server to get more drink refills. We had to get up multiple times to get what we needed from the server. Our food took forever. No one else around us seemed to be having any problems. We have two small children and it was a difficult meal with an incompetent server. I will not be returning to this location. The service at the Summerville Mellow Mushroom is way better.

This was a fun and lively place to get pizza, but the pizza dough was more like bread.

I come to Mellow Mushroom quite a bit because dammit, $2 PBR pints 24/7 are just too good to pass up, and naturally, after a Thursday afternoon of drinking, continuing your drinking is the only logical thing to do. No one likes that person that goes home early because they "have a lot to do at the house." If you do, then why on earth did you come out in the first place? Last night was particularly special though. My friends and I decided to eat here because, well, pizza is good and so is beer, and the CofC freshmen just moved in, so the sights were sure to be top notch. Bring a box of tissues, guys. We got into a fight over whether to get a meat pizza or a veggie one, and since I always have the best ideas, I suggested we do half and half - one mighty meaty and one holy shiitake. My first reaction to the holy shiitake was holy fucking shit. It is basically a mushroom pizza with a greasy base, parmesan cheese, shrooms (not the good kind, sadly), and some fatty garlic sauce that makes you feel the same way you felt as a kid when you first went to Disney World. Now, I don't get high, but I imagine this is how it feels when you do. And the mighty meaty? I don't even remember much of it, but who cares? I don't, so you shouldn't either. Mellow Shrooms gets 4 stars. That's right, even higher than La Pizzeria, mainly because our server wasn't a complete dick, water was free, and PBR was basically free.

Got the munches while roaming around Charleston. Looking for a cold beer and a snack. We ordered the Meatball Appetizer and a small pizza. I don't remember what the pizza was called, but it had yummy pesto and sundried tomatoes. Nom, Nom, Nom. The crust was delicious too. Service was quick and friendly. First experience with the Mellow Mushroom but we will return.

looooove me some mellow mushroom. you cant go wrong with any of their pizzas and i also really like the esperanza salad dressing which i use on their greek salads but also to dip my pizza crust in. they have great specialty pies but their basic cheese is also delish. good beer selection at this location and a nice back porch area to soak up some sun. friendly bartenders and a relaxed vibe. wish these would come up north!

Loved sitting upstairs by the window. Kids loved the food. Kids loved the pretzels. Pizzas are big. Took lots with us. Great vibe.

Yum. Mellow has the best pizza. Their crust is incredible and they have lots of funky pizzas to try. Lots of beer on tap if that's your thing. The decor is pretty legit in all of their locations. I dig the rooftop downtown. Great service too.

Enlightened spinach salad is a must-try. I love it with grilled chicken added. Parmesan pretzels are delicious!! They do not taste like a traditional pretzel...they are made with pizza dough. Lots of room for dining. My husband and I tried to sit upstairs in the outdoor area. We were quick to move when we were surrounded by chain smokers. If you do not like smoke, do not sit outside here.

The is our go to place for a yummy lunch while in Charleston. This time we tried the Thai die pizza - and it was very yummy!! The flavor was amazing, as well as their crust. Would definitely recommend.

Always of fan of Mellow Mushroom. This time we enjoyed the Philosopher's Pie and the Funky Q. Chicken. Both were delicious for lunch just before heading home. Great selection of beer at this location, if that is your thing.

I remember it being better when I was in college, but this place still wasn't bad. I ordered a small pepperoni-bacon-pineapple (eclectic, I know, but it's delicious) and while the toppings slid off the crust a bit too easily, it was cheesy and delicious. My girlfriend was especially happy that they had lactose free options (she's got a severe lactose intolerance) and got the vegan cheese with pepperoni and pineapple (take that, vegetarians!). All in all, a positive experience, and I'll still be stopping at MM every time I get a chance (mostly because then my girlfriend will agree to pizza).

Great service from Molly, and really good pizza. We were here visiting while on Vacation and felt like having a pizza. We had previously been in Savannah, and saw a family that was really disappointed that the Mellow Mushroom there was closed. We decided it must be good to have such a following. We got the Mighty Meaty. The pepperoni and other toppings were quite tasty. I could have done without the crumbled hamburger/sausage that was on top- too crispy fired while cooking that I think it was sausage but wasn't really sure. Would definitely come back here if in town.

$2 well vodka extra strong cocktails + 2nd best gluten free pizza I've ever had + open patio terrace + hot waitress with killer quads = a super great meal. It's not something available to me with the gluten free crust, but I love the concept of a build-your-own slice instead of just cheese or pepperoni.

We hit Charleston on a Thursday evening after flying all day and were famished. Our cottage was about three blocks off King Street and as we were out strolling we stumbled onto some great pizza. We ate upstairs in the bar area and the college atmosphere took me back! The House Special, 16 inch, was massive and excellent veggies, ham, bacon, sausage, the works. We were only able to finish half of this massive pizza, the rest is waiting for a midnight snack. Great Pizza, great service, great place.

This place is slightly overrated by most. The food is overpriced & not excellent. Their new thing is the glutton free which you can only get in a medium size for $20. That's 12inches. That's $1.66/inch! So if you just want do a gluten free pizza yourself in a small size your out of luck. Our last venture there we had horrible service. We were also told we could not sit upstairs but yet minutes after we sat down they sent several people up there. They didn't even tell us the specials for the night. If you want pizza or pizza pub type food go somewhere else. I believe I will try the Avondale location though, I've heard it was better.

Went here with my husband at the suggestion of an old friend, an ex-Pat from New York who moved down to Charleston a few years ago. She had suggested it because of my husband and I needing gluten-free options. She and her boyfriend ordered some smaller pizzas while me and my husband ordered one of the gluten-free ones. We also ordered soups - he got a mushroom soup and I got the tortilla soup. The tortilla soup was a little spicy for me, but super delicious. He finished his entire bowl of mushroom soup without a complaint! He's really picky when it comes to anything gluten-free, especially pizza, so he wasn't ridiculously enthused about the pizza we ate. I'm not as picky, so I thought it was really good! The crust had a different texture, but that's to be expected. We ate it later that night back at the hotel, and it was just as good the second time around and cold! It seemed a little expensive, hence the four stars. The atmosphere was funky and laid-back, and it was really crowded! Our waitress was also informative and attentive.

We stopped here to watch a basketball game while in Charleston. The bar upstairs had plenty of TVs, but we had to ask a couple of different times to get them to put on the game we wanted. The pepperoni pizza was very good. Not a huge fan of the Parmesan cheese they dusted on the crust. We were there for over two hours and the staff was very friendly.

We were walking and walking and walking and stumbled onto the Mellow Mushroom. Their pies are yummy and the beer was ice cold. It just so happens that we were seated upstairs and the breeze blowing through the windows and the basketball game on TV made for an enjoyable lunch. We had "the Boot" pizza with prosciutto, asiago, and mozzarella and "the Credible Hulk" with garlic, basil, cilantro, and avacado. Both were dynamite. Service was good, and we thought the beer flight was a great bargain. Loved the Harpoon Raspberry and the Golden Monkey beers. Stop in and enjoy.

I have been to other mellow mushrooms before but I went here for the first time during restaurant week. The only reason this place gets a high rating is because of the food. When we arrived the upstairs was bust becaise of a football game so we had to sit on the first floor. Well it took a very long time to recieve our food (the tables who ordered after us got their food way before us). And we rarely saw our waitress. Other than the long wait the food was delicious! I love Mellow Mushroom so everyone should try it but go to another location in Charleston.

The Mellow Mushroom is my favorite pizza place ever in life! I am from LA, and have visited Charleston several times.. Each time I go, a meal at Mellow Mushroom is a MUST! The Philosopher's Pie is my weakness! Steak, mushrooms, artichokes, feta?! Mellow Mushroom knows how to please my taste buds, and my tummy!! ORDER THIS PIZZA! The atmosphere is very lively, yet relaxed! A great place to go to just grab a beer and chill with friends, while enjoying a most delicious meal! :)

While visiting family, we were in Charleston to celebrate our cousin graduating from CoC. Our family ordered carry-out from Mellow Mushroom, and it was definitely one of the unique pies I ever ate! I'm not to sure on what was ordered (we had close to 10 pies), I'm sure we at least had the Kosmic Karma. It was definitely my favorite of the night. I hope on a return trip to the East Coast, we get the chance to eat there again! Hopefully, dine-in so that the pizza is piping hot. It was a little cold by the time it was brought back to the beach house.

This place is FANTASTIC! I've never had a bad experience here. It is a very low key, chill, restaurant. The servers are fantastic always give you honest advice on what's on the menu. I especially had a good experience when I ordered delivery when it arrived he explained that they didn't have regular salad to go containers and had to put mine in two little ones but that he didn't rip me off. When I opened my order they had included paper plates, cutlery, and two cookies! (Which were SO delicious). I've ordered from them before and have never had that happen before! I hope they never have the right size salad containers! Amazing place, definitely recommended it when your in Charleston on historical King St.

The pizza was well made, it's obviously not a 'drunk food' pizza place. Unfortunately the crust especially was just not quite to our taste. It was a little on the soggy side and seemed like some kind of whole wheat type crust. I think this might be a delicious pizza for some.. I just don't think it was a good fit for us.

Great place for Pizza and beers. They have a very large selection of beers. If you have kids you might want to stay in the dinning area on the first floor the bar is upstairs

Went here with friends just last night; a Fridat at 7pm or so, and didn't have any wait time for a booth. When we first walked into the restaurant, that delicious crust smell just washed over us and settled in our chest, making us feel...mellow. It's a warm, happy place. We sat on the main floor (not upstairs) and I liked the trippy Star-Trek-on-acid decor. I had no idea this was even a chain until I came here to give a review. The noise level was tolerable, and the laid-back vibe fit the casual food. And I'm sure the guys appreciated all the cute waitresses in t-shirts and tiny shorts. We ordered a pitcher of the summer ale they had on special, which satisfied everyone's varied beer preferences. We got the pizza bites as an appetizer, with the three different beer-based dipping sauces, and they were all good (although my husband didn't like the Porter-based one, I found them all tasty). A buddy ordered the spinach salad, which looked fresh, and I ordered the mixed salad, which was also fresh and very tasty (despite being just your basic salad). I didn't specify a dressing, and neither did my friend, but they each came out with a dressing that looked appropriate for what they were. Mine was some kind of creamy ranch, which was delicious and tasted homemade; his looked like it was a creamy thousand island or possibly a smokey bacon ranch (I forgot to ask him). The service was prompt until I asked for a To Go box and we needed our check (what is it about Charleston that makes servers suddenly go slower at the end of a diner's experience? Are y'all weird about asking that your food and service actually be compensated?). That was the only glitch in the service, though. We ordered one of the specials, I think it was called The Holy Mushroom, and it was delicious, with caramelized onions, mushrooms, and a spirited swirl of aioli sauce. The other pizza we ordered was the one with spinach, mushrooms, and jalapenos. I didn't like that one as much (the jalapenos seemed out-of-place to me) but the others liked it ok. However, both pizzas were outstanding in their crust, sauce, and cheese. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking for the gourmet pizza experience!

I had never been to this restaurant before as we do not go downtown much. We didn't have to wait for a table at all. Considering the location it definitely had the college atmosphere but that was to be expected. A half order of pretzels was a fantastic appetizer. Their pizza is very good also. I love the dough consistency as it is thicker with a bready consistency. Very filling! Definitely will go back! :-)

Pretty good times at this pizza joint. Good pizza considering in was in downtown Charleston close to the college. We all had 10 inch pizzas and we all ordered all different. I had the Philosopher's pizza and and small order of the Rocket salad. Both were great. Nice restaurant with some off the wall psychodelic paintings. Hope those weren't MAGIC MUSHROOMS in the pizza (it was PORTOBELLO). I'd give it a 5 stars, but the waiter and wait-staff seem to mimic the "MELLOW or MAGIC" mushroom style. Uhhhh? What was that your ordered? Ohh yeah...that one... Good times and good food for a pretty decent price. Lots of college folks here too...nice!

The food is good but be prepared for bad service. The staff is mostly college students who don't care about giving good service. They can be very rude. I was there this past weekend and asked for help and was scolded for it. Very bad service. If you can go to the one in Summerville for a better experience.

I love the Mellow Mushroom. I've been to the ones in Atlanta, Mobile, Denver and Asheville and had great experiences. For that reason I was pretty disappointed yesterday when we went to the Charleston location and it came up sub-par. Our waiter was a really nice guy so I feel bad talking trash but jeez....talk about lazy. There was only one other table there for lunch and he took FOREVER to do anything. He brought me my iced tea...I asked for sweetener, then he took the other table's order before bringing it! He knew I wanted sweetener before I could enjoy my iced tea and that I was waiting but somehow it wasn't urgent. So I sat and stared at the tea for 5 minutes before he got around to it. Upon returnig from the bathroom, I saw that our order was on the kitchen counter ready to be served but our waiter was only the phone so long I had to personally inform him that it was ready. I cringed in my seat as the food grew colder. The food was very far below what I've come to expect from the Mellow Mushroom in quality and everyone at my table agreed. The dishes were prepared as if someone was following a mere ingredient list with no care or attention to how it might taste or even appear. I ordered a Portabello Mushroom Rueben which sounded delicious. The ingredients were OK but jeez....So skimpy! There was so little sauerkraut I had to pull the sandwich apart to see if it was really there. The dressing was the same...Hardly present. The mushrooms tasted decent but were not nearly enough to compensate for the overall lack of care. Not a $10 sandwich at all. One of my friends ordered a steak sandwich and said "Very disappointed", another asked for Bleau Cheese crumbles on his salad and was charged for them although they did not come with them and he was too soft to mention it and walked away frustrated. I love the Mellow Mushroom generally but this location has got to stop hiring lack luster hippies and start taking the eating experience more seriously. I don;t think I'll be back here.

The only thing negative I ever have to say about this place is purely because of their success--and it's that you ALWAYS have to wait for a table. ALWAYS. But who doesn't love some Mellow Mushroom? My all-time favorite is the Kosmic Karma. YUMMY. Pesto and tomato sauce swirled with sundried tomatoes and mixed veggies. So freaking delicious! Also--so many beers to choose from--I never realized it when I was in college and ate at the Boone NC location all the time (because I only drank the cheap beer by the pitcher with a group haha)... they have a HUGE selection! Make sure to ask for their beer list and their "special beers" which won't be on the list--they are seasonal or they got a single keg to try out. Worth asking!

The food is really really good and the smell only compliments it. To top it off there is a great beer club, an upstairs and downstairs and one of the coolest bathroom's in Charleston. Very oriental themed bathroom and very casual relaxed themed restaurant. This is a great group stop or a couple just wanting a little good Italian food.

What a pleasant surprise for a national chain! On a Friday night it was crowded but we were seated immediately. The selection of beer was pretty impressive and the service was quick and friendly. We had a Caprese salad that was excellent. Our pizza was really good as well - they have a huge selection of toppings as well as pre-configured specialty pies. We had the "Kosmic Karma" which was loaded with pesto goodness. The price was a little high for chain pizza, but I felt it was well worth it. The only cons are that it is on King Street, so you will most likely have to park in a garage or lot, and it does serve a college crowd so there are a lot of young adults (not a problem for me, but I can see how it might be a turn-off to some).

To me this is a must stop in Charleston SC. Where I am from we didn't have Mellow Mushroom so even though it is a chain, it still tastes like a delicacy. For my money this is the best pizza that I have ever had. I have been to other Mellow Mushrooms and this one in particular stands out. I cant say enough good things about this place! Plus $5.00 small pizzas on Mellow Mondays is unbeatable! I wish someone would change the picture that shows up on yelp though. It is a pizza place so there should be a pic of pizza. I could make a pinup calander for 12 months of the year with all the sexy pictures of pizza I have taken at this Mellow Mushroom!

This was the least busy mushroom that I've been to. We ordered carrying, which was ready promptly, while having a beer at the bar. Likes the upstairs bar. Bartender up there was able to recommend a beer to my Mom which she really liked. As always, they have an impressive selection of beers on tap and in bottles.

I am a big fan of the Mellow Mushroom chain and I think its because each one has its own flare. This is one of my favorite mellow mushrooms, and I think its because of the excellent service they have. I not only got some of my favorite pizza, but the waiters are excellent. They are some of the most laid back people I have ever met, but they definitely get the job done. We were actually able to spend time talking to them about other things than just the delicious pizza we were going to eat. The atmosphere is also excellent ranging from the menu to the decor in the building. They have set up a great environment to have a fun time while you enjoy pizza and drinks with your friends.

Got tired of mess hall food so we decided to hit the town for some real food! We came across the Mellow Mushroom .Very mushroom inspired restaurant lol!! There were 4 of us and we all wanted to try different pizzas so we got 2 pizzas with and split each with a different type. We picked Mighty Meat, Kosmic Karma, Funky Q Chicken, and the Philosopher. All were excellent. Each one very flavorful! The crust was great and it wasn't greasy. The interior is very open and mushroom inspired. Cool place to hangout and eat pizza. They have a large selection of beers as well!!.

After being in Charleston for three weeks, I was dying for some pizza. My instructor suggested The Mellow Mushroom. I broke out my map and headed over. The wait staff was super nice and the pizza was awesome! If you like real homemade pizza and not the mass produced stuff this place is good.

Wow - I just love this place. My husband and I were in Charleston on a road trip, and we had eaten at a couple of local restaurants. We had been out all day, sightseeing and exploring the area, and just wanted to pick up something tasty to eat back at our campsite. We decided to hit MM and order our pizza, and grab a couple of beers at the bar while we waited. Well, they absolutely did not disappoint. We were greeted promptly, and the staff was super friendly. We ordered our pizza, decided to try some soft pretzels too, and the guy said he'd bring our order up to us at the bar. Nice! So we headed to the bar - tons of beers on tap, which was great. There were two seats at the bar, but they weren't next to each other. We stood there for a minute debating whether to try to move them and ask people to scoot a little bit, or just sit at a table, when an employee must have noticed our predicament and came right over and asked four guys seated at the bar if they could all slide down one seat, so we could sit together. WHAT?! I have never been in a place where an employee took such initiative to do something so awesome for the customers. I definitely wanted to sit there all night and drink beers, especially with the friendly and helpful bartender. Our pizza came out about 15 minutes later, so we finished up and left. It must have been happy hour or something because our beers were $2-3 each, I am not from Charleston but I doubt if this is what they cost all the time. And the pizza and pretzels were DELICIOUS, even after the drive to the campsite and sitting there for a bit while we got ourselves situated. It was still good for breakfast the next morning. (All the comforts of home, including room temp pizza for breakfast!) I love the Mellow Mushroom and would go there everyday if they were anywhere near Manhattan.

There's no pizza like NY pizza but this one is pretty good. The wait is terrible, thankfully we didn't have to. I saw a girl after me waiting for thirty minutes, which is mindboggling when I think about it. I had a hawaiaan. & everyone else was more enraptured with the beer, something I'm unable to recommend. A must try for next time. On to the pizza! Loooooooved the crunch in the crush and the freshness of the fruit. I almost wanted to ask if I could buy their pineapple. . . Just the pineapple. I'm really happy this place was recommended to us, definitely worth the venture.

I have been to Mellow Mushrooms in other cities and this one seems to be a more upscale one compared to the others that I have been to. I ordered the jerk chicken pizza, and while it was a little spicier than I am normally used to, it was still very good. The drink specials were pretty good as well. I believe I had four drinks while I was there, and combining those with my food order, the bill came out to $25, which is reasonable.

I was visiting Charleston from Miami and needed to grab something quick before a tour. The staff was really nice, and our waiter was great as far as making sure we were helped quickly. I was pleasantly surprised with our pizzas, as was everyone else in my group. I've visited the Mellow Mushroom in Atlanta, Ga, and have always thought it was just okay, but the pizza here was particularly good. I had the Gourmet White, which was awesome, very flavorful, if you are into whites. And the boys had the Funky Q Chicken and they loved it. Now, I did have their margarita that I was not exactly a fan of but the pizza totally made up for it. The ambiance was interesting... If you were to sit upstairs it was slightly louder, more fun, kind of trendy. The bar is located upstairs, along with an outside terrace. They have TVs in order to watch any sporting events. Downstairs it was a bit more relaxed, a little quieter, better for the family and kids. Overall very casual and relaxed.

Been to one of these before.. in Boone, NC, I believe. I remember it tasting really yummy, but it is all in the pizza you choose. I don't recall what pizza we choose this time, but they weren't the right ones. Service was ok. Definitely a busy place.

This was my first visit and I don't have one where I live, so I'm just going to have to review based on the first impression. The menu was extensive, the quality of food was solid, and the quantity helped justifty the prices a bit. The decor is cliche but cute. My family shared a 14" House Special pizza. It had everything but the kitchen sink, was really tasty and made me want to try less busy varieties so I could appreciate the ingredients fully. Everyone agreed the crust was great - definitely not a throwaway (I never throw crust away, but sometimes they can be too dry or crunchy). I would consider it a good bet for families and groups who need a diverse menu (within the pizza genre).

NORMALLY, I really enjoy this chain restaurant. However, this past Thanksgiving weekend, 6 of us trooped to the King Street location for lunch. 3 OF THE 6 OF US WERE ILL!!!! I had no idea this chain even EXISTED until I came to Charleston, and now I desperately wish they were in New York. There's just something about the pizza here that is so good - amazing, slightly bizarre combinations and a perfect combination of doughy-crispy crust. My sister and I both proclaimed we weren't that hungry and then promptly ate more pizza than we'd ever done in our lives. Amazing drinks list as well (although you Americans really need to figure out what good cider is). And, above all us, friendly and helpful service. I'll be searching out a Mellow Mushroom any time I'm in the right part of the country now!

this is one of my favorite pizza chain.....always consistent in every town. The service was good, waitress stated today was her first. Spinach salad was fresh and plenty and pizza hot and fresh, excellent crust. Only draw was the place is very noisy especially upstairs and I was concern about the underage drinking. The table next to us were drinking a pitcher of long island iced tea (friends of the waitress) and they were definitely not of age

This place definitely deserves four stars. I've eaten at the Charleston location off and on since it opened a few years ago. Most recently, a large group of out-of-town friends and I met there since we figured it would be vegetarian friendly. It didn't let us down. Some of our group had a fresh pizza, which they raved about. I had a sandwich which was fine, but the pasta salad was incredible. The pretzels are also well worth a try. The only negatives are the noise levels and crowds. Just don't try and sit upstairs in the bar if you want to hear anyone at your table.

  • Ind R.

Here to ruin the party... I am not a regular at Mellow Mushroom, so maybe my lackluster experiences are the result of bad luck? I have received abominable service EVERY time that I've gone to Mellow Mushroom. And, I can usually deal with slow service, but the acoustics make it impossible to carry on a conversation in the meantime. And the decor? Hippie out of a can? I know that Mellow Mushroom started out as a funky hip establishment, but each franchise spawned has a little less character than the previous. However, I cannot argue with the extent of the menu. If you are picky about your toppings, or beer, Mellow Mushroom has what you need. Bad news for vegans: I've heard that some dairy-free ingredients at the Asheville location are not dairy-free in Charleston.

Yum! I love to go out to the Mellow Mushroom. Everything I've had here is good. Calzones, pizza, subs, and of course beer. The Mellow Mushroom is well-known for their "100 Beers Club" - you join up for $5 and they give you a booklet to keep track of all the different beers you drink there. Once you reach "fufty", you get a ballcap. When you hit 100, though, you get a shirt and a personalized mug they keep behind the bar for you. For ever after, when you order a beer at the Mushroom you get it served in the mug (20 oz for the price of 16!). Most importantly, once you reach 100 they put your name on a plaque up on the wall, along with how many days it took you to get there (well over 500 and counting for me - I don't work downtown anymore). This place has a very fun atmosphere; it's always a party at the Mellow Mushroom. Great for families and kids during normal dinner hours, though. FYI - a girl I know had sex in the walk-in freezer there one time while out to dinner with some friends. Whoa

Killer tempeh hoagie. I mean really, really, really great. The tofu hoagie was good, but the tempeh was awesome. Hummus was also excellent.. More of a review to come after I've eaten more of their food!
