Halo gets a four star on location and people watching appeal to start. With an outdoor balcony on the second floor overlooking MUSC, it is a haven for people watching anytime of day. Excellent place to meet your caffeine needs whether it is a latte, coffee or just a shot of espresso. Yum on the breakfast sandwich and chocolate chip muffins plentiful on the chips. The staff delivered our food when ready and the decor is just awesome. If you are salivating about Comic-Con, you will love the art here. This is also a great place for Happy Hour. Very cheap food including Queso and salsa and awesome drink prices. If thought this was just a bakery and sandwich shop...Oh no, it is so much more. Come on by.

Great lunch option. Easily within walking distance from MUSC. I like to get The Mayan and a salad that they serve with mandarin oranges. The pickles have their own particular flavor. Seasoned with clove maybe? But delicious. Couscous side was decent. Just wish I had a few more bites. The chocolate chip cookies are good too!

I have never had a turkey bacon Swiss sandwich as good as Halo's Ann Arbor sandwich! As a Michigan native, I had to order it and it blew my expectations out of the water. I also appreciate that they allowed me to slightly customize the sandwich, as not all lunch shops allow that. I love the vibe of the shop and especially enjoyed the crew singing along to Dust In The Wind on the radio.

I saw Halo a couple of weeks ago as we were driving around downtown and made a note to go back and check it out. This week I was able to make it back, and boy was it yummy! Halo is a pretty tiny place located directly across from the MUSC horseshoe on Ashley. We were visiting a friend in the hospital that day and parked in the hospital garage, which is only 2 blocks away. The interior is very cozy and cute. You order at the counter and then they bring you your food at the table. I ordered the Ragin Bull which was roast beef, mozzarella, onions and garlic butter on Texas Toast. You get your choice of side and I went with the potato salad. The side is super tiny, only 3-4 bites, but the sandwich is big and filling so that didn't make much of a difference. My sandwich was great and I really enjoyed the potato salad too. It had a hint of blue cheese or something in it that made it ultra creamy. My friend had The Brickhouse: roast beef, blue cheese, onion and roasted red peppers on 9 grain bread. Her's wasn't as good as mine, but still tasty. I heard the staff talking about the upstairs being turned in to a bar at 4. The cafe closes at 3 and then I guess they reopen with a different menu upstairs. With the prime location of being next to the biggest employer in Charleston I'm sure the place can get hectic and busy at times. We caught it when we were one of the only tables in there.

Overall Halo is a very solid option for lunch if you work on MUSC campus. They offer a variety of sandwiches and sides which are all tasty. Consequently, there is always a rather long line during lunch hours, but they're doing a good job at quickly taking everybody's orders. Upstairs seating (especially outdoors) is nice and a good spot to relax during lunch. Their prices are adequate and you will always pay around $10 for your sandwich with chips. I certainly suggest you ask for extra avocado as this definitely enhances every sandwich but never shows up on my bill! I can personally recommend the Ann Arbor, Raging Bull, and Halo Club sandwiches. They do offer a "Buy 10, get 1 free" card but they don't allow for this for groups which I consider a bit greedy. Overall a very good spot to get lunch on MUSC campus.

Overpriced. Little options. Food was so so (tried a couple sandwiches). Staff is friendly. Location is convenient. Decent happy hour prices. Bottom line is basically that if you work at MUSC its a good drop in spot to get a beer nearby. However, if you have the time then I would most definitely walk to Fuel or The Warehouse instead. Yet, I still find myself over there every week or to do business interviews and such because it is pretty close to work!

Great coffee / lunch / brunch spot convenient to MUSC. It's located right across the main hospital on Ashley. They have a lot of soup, salad, and sandwich options. All of which look delicious. They offer coffee and pastries also- including a pistachio muffin!! I'll update my review some time when I've tried them. I ordered the Santa Ana salad with grilled chicken. The salad was really fresh with mixed greens, strawberries, avocado, cucumber, egg, sliced almonds and dried cranberries. Great favors. I highly recommend it!

Halo gets three stars for their great blueberry muffins and Thai salad. However, the lines are long and most of the food is pretty mediocre. Unless you have oodles of time to wait for your order after the rest of the entire MUSC campus orders food, don't bother.

Food was ok. Service was below average. I asked for cheddar instead of swiss on my sandwich, girl seemed like she could care less, it ended up coming with swiss. She also did not smile or seem friendly at all. I smiled at her a couple times and just got a stare back. Ordered hot chocolate, and got what I can only describe as tepid milk, possibly tepid whip cream. Sandwich was ok.

Overpriced. Not meant for MUSC students. Good salads. Sandwiches are OK. Home made cookies and brownies. Limited outdoor seating.

Love the food! I go to MUSC and it is a nice place to meet up to study or just relax.

I have a friend at MUSC that recommended this place - he was exactly right! I had the Monterrey which is a turkey and Swiss with avocado slices served with a pesto sauce on whole wheat toast. It was delicious. That pesto was to die for! They also had a help-yourself pickle bucket which just makes me happy :) Pretty cheap for Charleston and great food! Well worth a trip.

The food was great, and actually unexpected. I had a breakfast burrito, which was accompanied with some homemade potato wedges. It wasn't dry, and had a lot of flavor, and REAL eggs which always is a plus! However the coffee side of 'Halo' was pretty awful. I first got a iced vanilla latte, which was really watered down and even with an extra shot didn't have much of a kick. Then I decided to try just the regular coffee, and that wasn't any better. It was a dark roast, but didn't have much flavor, and also seemed watered down. So if your looking for a good breakfast/lunch quick sandwich I suggest 'Halo', but there are much better coffee shop in Charleston!

I work at MUSC so this is a convenient little spot to hit for lunch. Good food, quick service, and lots of seating. I will go back to try more of their menu :)

I asked the manager to give my girlfriend and I two sandwiches that he recommended. We ended up with a fried green tomato blt and a roast beef sandwich on Texas toast. Both came with a picked okra and were absolutely amazing. The upstairs is a really cool bar with a perfect beer selection -- anywhere that has Founders' All Day IPA is doing something right. Everything was great from the atmosphere to the food. We will definitely go back again.

The food here is good. However, they no longer deliver. That makes them not an option for us. :-(

I just stopped in here for a quick bite. I was excited to see mini pies and bite size pies. I got a bite size peanut butter pie. It was excellent. I would have loved to get the bigger size. I also got an iced coffee and it was very refreshing. Very cute decor. All around cute place!

One of my readers suggested that we try Halo, a restaurant on Ashley Avenue across from MUSC. My readers haven't steered me wrong yet, so we decided to give it a go. Parking can be a little challenging for this restaurant, but the parking gods were smiling on us and we found a metered spot a few streets down from the restaurant. The restaurant is set up in a loveable, old, two-story old home. Both levels have outside seating which was glorious on the day we went. Upon entering the restaurant the ordering process was a bit confusing. Folks that appeared to be regulars walked right up to the register and started placing their orders. There is not a "sandwich board" or menu posted but there was a basket of paper menus by the front door. We picked up a few and started to peruse their creative menu. On the way to ordering we ogled the glass covered "jewel box" of fresh made pastries. I could see one of these treats was going to be in my immediate future. My husband went up to check out the upstairs seating while I stood in line to order. Although it wasn't very busy (we got to lunch very late), the ordering process took awhile. There was one cashier who is very helpful, but because there were a lot of options, i.e. breads, side dishes, etc. each customer was asked and given all of these options, which took some time. There could probably more efficient way of doing this that I believe would help to drive traffic and sales. After placing our order I headed up to the great outdoor table that my husband had found. Once you place your order you're given a small plastic number that stands on your table. Your food is then delivered to your table. We waited for lunch and watched the world go by....... If I had one complaint it would be that our lunch took a long time. For a not-so busy restaurant it took almost 20 minutes for our lunch to arrive. BUT... when it did arrive it was well worth the wait. The menu consists of the baked goods that we first saw, 3 soups, 8 salads and 24 sandwiches. Their breakfast menu (7:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.), looks very interesting and we can't wait to go back and try it. During our wait we munched on the blueberry scone that we'd ordered. I have worked with a very large bakery café chain in the past and I thought I knew scones. This was the most un-scone-like scone that I've ever eaten. It was moist, light, and airy and the blueberries tasted like they were picked that morning. I'd go back to Halo just for that! I ordered the Quesadilla Salad with Chicken. I thought the item sounded interesting. I really didn't know where the chicken was going - on the salad or in the quesadilla, and found out that it comes in the quesadilla. A large, hot quesadilla was served atop a pile of greens and fresh accompaniments - diced tomato, carrots, banana peppers, and black bean and corn salsa. All were very fresh. Although the mixed cheese and pretzel roll advertised with the salad did not make the trip upstairs to our table, I would not have known they were missing until I reread the menu this morning. The salad was very good, but I didn't care for eating out of a plastic clam shell with plastic silverware as if we had taken the item to go. Despite these few pet peeves, the salad was a winner. When we go back for lunch I'll be trying the sandwich selections. My husband's "Brickhouse" sandwich came out cut in half and stacked at least 4-5" high. The side dish was the pasta salad of the day, which was as he put it, "Not their specialty." He didn't seem to mind, since the sandwich was terrific. Served on a nice, fresh Ciabatta roll (they were out of multigrain bread that the sandwich is usually served on), thinly sliced roast beef was topped with a heaping serving of crumbled bleu cheese, roasted red peppers, red onion and pesto. All I kept hearing was "You ordered the wrong thing, this is great!" Upon leaving one of the employees (a manager perhaps?), asked how everything was and said that he was pleased that we enjoyed everything and invited us back. And back for a visit we shall go.

Had a very tasty sandwich here today. A traditional BLT. Loads of bacon toasted bread and fresh veggies. However, I made a mistake and ordered the broccoli salad in lieu of kettle chips. Way to much pepper and I believe vinegar put in this salad. I'm pretty sure the salad should be sweet. Even the raisins in it did not help. I trashed it. Unfortunately there were no pistachio muffins today. Which is good, probably would have tried to eat them all. They are heavenly! I've eaten here before and will eat here again. Parking will be and issue if your are not used to maneuvering downtown but for those who work at MUSC like me it's just a quick walk across the street!

Great salads and sandwiches, locally roasted coffee, tempting sweets, and more seating than I ever expected (I'll definitely come to study just because there's so much space upstairs and the porch is beautiful) I also appreciated that I had fresh and healthy side options to go along with my sandwich, though chips are available too. The menu of over 30 salads and sandwiches was a touch overwhelming, their website lists some of the favorites, but there are many more available....I ended up just telling the young woman behind the counter what I was craving and she relayed to me what was close to that - granted I came before the lunch rush, so my indecisiveness wasn't a holdup, but I guarantee you'll need a second to decide on what you're ordering. Average sandwich runs about $7-$10, Salads are less, but adding a meat brings it to about that same. Pretty reasonable and average. A sandwich and my side of potato salad definitely filled me up. Great atmosphere, very clean, and I enjoyed my lunch! I'll be back. I definitely agree about challenging parking, I'm guessing 95% of their business comes from MUSC people just walking across the street. I biked, but think twice about driving.

This is a great option if you're in walking distance. For those of us downtown but not at MUSC it's a bit of a hidden gem! They had plenty to chose from and ordering and finding seats around 1 PM on a weekday was easy and quick. Our sandwiches came right up and both were good. I like that there are two floors of seating and it's very quick for those of us on a lunch break. I'd like to go back and try the outdoor seating option as that's an extra treat for those of us stuffed inside an office all day. Really had zero complaints. I noticed the pastries but didn't stop to peruse. Though as someone with a sweet tooth having those available always gets extra points!!!
