I grew up going to Dukes out in Orangeburg when we would visit family there. Long before the business expanded to the multiple locations today. This place is a no frills, buffet style, serve yourself kind of place. The best food out there is the kind that starts in local hands, doesn't change a lot over the years and keeps it simple. This is it. Their mustard-based sauce and fall apart BBQ is the stuff of dreams... They now have a few locations closer to Charleston which makes it easy for me to get my fix when I'm in town.

Having married into a BBQ loving family, they have now made it their mission to hit up as many restaurants as possible to find the best. After having found it, and then said restaurant closing, we are on the hunt again. I have to admit, I'm not huge on BBQ, but I did enjoy myself here. Their mac and cheese was TO DIE FOR and they even had table bread (it's plain white bread, don't get too excited!)! I sampled their hash, which is usually a no-go for me, only to find that it was delicious over the rice! I didn't try the desserts, but they looked yummy. The pulled pork was moist and tender, exactly how it should be. I saw a few fried items (fish, maybe?) on the buffet, but they don't have anything like brisket or ribs out, so you'll have to go somewhere else if that's your thing.

Part of the legendary Dukes Family of restaurants that span most of the state, this BBQ joint is good. Solid Mac and Cheese, great fried okra, and a variety of sides that exceed even my expectations. Let's talk Mac and cheese. This may be the best I've ever had. Like ever. Like I'm sorry mom but your stuff isn't as good as this good. Cheesy and creamy. Their were times that I wasn't sure I was eating. Maybe I had ascended Mount Olympus and was consuming the food of gods. Maybe not. This was just what they sent down to us. I would go back just for that mac and cheese alone. The BBQ was good. Fresh and flavourful. Very moist. Not a ton of smoke in it, but still enough to be good pulled pork. I smothered mine in a couple of different sauces. The mild was a tad sweeter than I expected it to be, so I had to dual back a bit to keep it from overpowering. The other sauces were good, but clearly an afterthought to their signature sauce. This is a new go to spot. Plenty of good buffet BBQ goodness.

The BBQ buffet is somewhat of a staple in the carolinas and Dukes does it best. Dukes is more than a restaraunt, it is an institution, a gathering place, a community forum, and a damn good place to eat. The buffet is always well stocked with what you might expect, BBQ of course, rice and hash, all the vegetables, fried chicken, bbq chicken, and a whole host of other southern fried delicacies. The best part is the inclusion of dessert in the buffet, and I can only attest to the banana pudding, its all I have tried, and its amazing. I would have to say though that Dukes BBQ is good, not great, hence the 4 stars. The dining room is not huge and there are onkly a few tables but they are community tables. On any given day you may find yourself in the company of construction workers, police officers, business men, and everything in between. My only suggestion is try not to hurt yourself, like I do everytime.

I was really happy to find that there's a Duke's in Charleston! I've been dining at the Walterboro location for years and was told they're related. Sure enough. I recognized the sauces for sure. Comparisons were inevitable and this wasn't quite as good but pretty close. The fried chicken is good here but not nearly as well executed. The selection isn't quite as good but I will say the banana pudding is better here. I also thought the addition of fried chicken livers was inspired. Most of the sides were a slightly paler version of the Walterboro versions. The yams looked pretty sad. I will be back next time we're around.

This Dukes is owned by the same family that owns the property in Walterboro, and it stacks up nicely to the original, with much of the food tasting just the same as it does there. The buffet is not nearly as grand, however. Still, I was impressed with the fried chicken, pulled pork, sides and desserts. The blackened peas, mac and cheese and fried okra all had the unmistakable homemade flavor that makes me pine for this food when I'm not in the area. My husband says the fried chicken at the Walterboro location is better, but I would have a hard time discerning any difference. And the mac and cheese here is actually better. Yummy, yummy down-home Southern cooking'.

It is $11 all you can eat, that gets it one star! Not bad, not great. Pork was tender and with sauce tasted fine, no flavor on its own. Fried chicken was moist. Collard greens were not very good and mac and cheese was watery. Others have raved about the mac and cheese, maybe it's a new chef but the sides weren't good today. Hush puppies were delicious. If you want okay food for a great price, go. If you are looking for an amazing bbq experience, maybe try somewhere else. For the price, it's good

Really enjoy Dukes. I used to have to drive to Walterboro to get my Dukes fix but now its right in front of my house! How cool is that? They are known for their buffet and I will say you cant miss with what they serve, of course the mac and cheese is amazing!!!!! they have a drive thru to make it convenient. the only drawback I see is the parking lot fills up fast plus if its raining hard the parking lot floods but swimming here for BBQ is worth it!

  • Madalyn S.

Great BBQ and sauce. All the fixings, too. Collards, butter beans, corn, Mac and cheese, French fries, corn fritters, green beans, hash and rice. The list goes on! Only thing they're missing in my opinion is corn bread, but they do have hush puppies and white bread for sandwiches.

Wholly cow I am about to bust! Three kids are comatose right now. Food was great, but wanted more pork skins and would have had ro wait. Either way it was a great visit!

went last week and it was ...ok, but when we went back this week, it was not good at all. Fried chicken was almost empty, checked back 4 times throughout my meal, I know they saw me and said nothing, also several other things kept running out. Even the deserts. No banana pudding. The place was dirty. All things considered, I doubt that I will go back anytime soon. I left the "all you can eat buffet" still hungry.

Yum! I have had BBQ from all over the south and I was so impressed by dukes! Friendly staff and the food was amazing not to mention they give you a ton of food! Great place!

  • Manuel D.

I was hoping for a far wider variety of BBQ meats but all they had was smoked pork shoulder and fried fish. Wheres the ribs, steak chops, chicken????? Other than the meat dilemma the sides where good. The corn bread was like eating corn cake! Worst ever!

  • R J.

Great pulled pork...not drowning in sauce, but moist and simple. You can taste the pork, not a bunch of sauce. Sides are great...fried chicken is simply seasoned but terrific. Sides are all traditional, like limas, blackeyes, yams, mac and cheese, fried okra, rice and hash, red rice, etc.

The food tasted old and like it had been sitting out for a while. The Mac and cheese was watery and the corn fritters were cold and bland. Fried chicken greasy, salty and not tasty. Banana pudding however was out of sight. I felt I probably could've done better at Golden Corral and Golden Corral is cheap crap. Priced reasonably but I don't get the hype. These people who rated it four stars are out of their mind. Charleston has so much great food but you won't find it here....

Buddy and I ate dinner there and I've got to say I was not impressed. I've eaten buffet BBQ that's amazing and this was not it, I'm afraid. The pulled pork is fine, but everything else reminded me of college buffet food. Price is good. Folks were friendly.

Dukes is awesome! They offer a stacked buffet of grandma-esque southern food that is delicious! Everything I tried was awesome and very fresh. Nothing looked like it had been sitting out all day and the variety was great! BBQ was moist, smoky, and delicious! Beats out Bessinger's buffet which was the reigning BBQ buffet for me! Staff was super friendly and made me feel right at home. They even have loaf bread on all the tables just like any Sunday BBQ you'll ever hit in the South. Building is unassuming but trust me, you won't be sorry!

So glad Dukes opened up on JI. Too bad I don't live there anymore, because JI has gotten so expensive. That's another story though. Anyway, this pretty much follows all the other Dukes I've been to in consistency and taste. They have alot of great food to offer on the buffet, including corn nuggets, mac and cheese (real cheese!), fried chicken, pulled pork, okra, stewed veggies, green beans, fat back, etc... My wife loves corn nuggets, so I guess I do to. Space is a bit cramped, as it's in an old Capt D's, but only has half the dinning area, and coming and going can get awkward, due to the amount of people and lack of space. The people are very nice though and greet you with a smile. Worth a stop by fo shizzle.

If you like home cooking this is the place. $11 for all you can eat and everything tasted good. best items were collards, stewed tomatoes, bbq hash, hush puppies, spicy sauce on pulled pork, hush puppies, banana pudding, sweet tea, hush puppies. Man this was good. Great job Dukes!

    (5)
  • David R.

Good home cooking buffet-style. They have the best fried chicken next to Mom's. Good sides and a variety of sauces. I recommend the collards as a must have side. They have a good variety of dessert items, but the banana pudding will make you go back for seconds.

Best barbecue in Charleston. This is not saying as much as it might have been just ten years ago(I'm looking at you, "Mr. B's"), but Dukes has good pulled pork with a variety of trimmings at an affordable price. The pork is usually succulent, the hash is always the right consistency, and the South Carolina yellow mustard sauce is a strong point. The stewed tomatoes are sweet, but not too sweet; quite tasty although they are begging for some okra to accompany them. The banana pudding is rich and sweet; you can actually feel your cholesterol rising as you eat it-which is exactly the kind of sensation good banana pudding should instill. Loaves of Sunbeam white bread on the table give the place an authentic, hands-on, make-your-own-sandwhich feel. Can't beat the location. Drive-thru is super convenient. The dining room is always full of good ole' boys, which I guess is a good thing in a similar way that a Chinese restaurant full of Chinese people is a good thing. The Duke of Charleston BBQ is DUKE'S

Finally, a BBQ place that gets it. Since opening, Dukes has gotten only better. Buffett style Including real honest to goodness BBQ HASH.! Sides include southern mainstays, collards, Cole slaw, potato salad, stewed tomatoes, all good. Haven't tried the desserts yet, just never seemed to have space. Oh yeah, the pork is awesome and although not a big mustard sauce fan Dukes is making me a believer. What some real Q and comfort food sides, this is the place!! All U can eat $10 bucks

    (5)
  • Martin E.

While a buffet is nice, and $12 including a drink is a decent price...the food wasn't great. Pork and fried chicken were the only meats with lackluster fried sides and canned veggies. I was not impressed and won't be back.

The negative reviews must have been posted by a Yankee! Dukes is awesome. I'm glad that I no longer have to travel to Walterboro to get some! Anyone can have a bad day. Maybe you should give it another try!
