This place is fun if you're in the immediate area, with decent food and service. However, my overall suggestion is to go elsewhere if you're really looking for the best seafood in Charleston. Not that this place is bad - it's great if you happen to be nearby - but not really a place I think worth driving to. For one, it's a little difficult to find if you don't know where you're going. The views of the marsh are nice but you also get to see the overpass. The seafood is good but plenty of other places have better. I had a Caesar salad with grilled shrimp, which was fine, the small tiny hushpuppies they give in a basket, and a sweet tea. I've been other times and ordered the fried seafood platter. Meh. Not much else to report. Not a terrible place but I put it middle of road for seafood options in Charleston.

Great food & drinks, nice sized portions at fair prices. Great view and the service is quick. Has a good Low Country feel, our favorite stop when we're in town.

Beautiful Dock seating. Fun food and a good local staff. I always try to go there when the blue crabs are in season. They know how to fry them. The bar is a nice play to hide from traffic and the people are always worth watching. I have heard people call it a tourist trap. I disagree. It is just simple good food. Nothing fancy. I think a lot of peoplr here in Charleston take that for granted. Great on the water spot.

The food was great. We ordered the Fried Green Tomato appetizer and the Chili Lime Salsa was a nice touch. The local Palmetto beer was tasty, a little disappointed that they had no Draft beer, but not a deal breaker for me. I ordered the Seafood Sampler with mussels, shrimp, crab legs, sausage and red potatoes and it was DELICIOUS...... However for $28 I would have expected there to be more food in my bucket, more crab legs would have been great! My boyfriend got the Shrimp and Crab Leg combo with two sides for approximately $21. The meal was overall tasty. It took the server about six minutes to finally greet us even though it was not very busy, and having worked in this business for thirteen years it was a little annoying, but, once he finally came by he was very friendly and took great care of us. The view was unexpected when we arrived and a delightful surprise. I chose this restaurant based on the reviews and the seafood menu options and when we arrived and saw the beautiful water side view we were only too eager to sit outside to enjoy our meal on our last night in Charleston. We even caught a dolphin swimming by. Very nice romantic end to our night to sit by the water and enjoy our beer. Very casual setting but sitting outside during Sun Set was incredible.

We had a fantastic dinner last Friday night at the Crab House on James Island!! The view was gorgeous from the deck, our food was delicious and our waitress, Daisy, was excellent! Mom happened to mention in passing to dad that wanted a taste of his grits and Daisy brought her some. So thoughtful!!

Used to have a lot more on their menu, missing most of the good stuff now, but the service is always great and if you want fried seafood, go there! But they got rid of most of their grilled seafood, including their axing grilled shrimp! I'm sad to say that we don't go there a lot anymore. We used to have family gatherings on my dad's side of the family all the time!

My husband and I were visiting friends and wanted to grab seafood for lunch. We chose this place because of the good reviews. The decor and overall experience is what I would expect from a seafood restaurant. My husband and I both ordered choose your own seafood plates. The common item we both had were scallops. When I cut into it, I immediately smelled ammonia. The smell was strong. I feel like that is something you would smell prior to cooking them. It just didn't sit right with us that they were willing to just serve them to us, hoping that we wouldn't notice or expecting that wouldn't know any better(my assumption). The sides were good. I liked the hush puppies. They were a little sweet. I also had red rice and collards. I love red rice. It's so simple, but just really delicious. It's not a dish that I've seen messed up before. The service was good. I felt that the waitress was attentive and very polite. In all the experience was ok. Will I return? Probably not...There are plenty of seafood restaurants in Charleston.

We wanted some blue crab and our waitress told us "Other people who ordered this have sent it back"... well that's because you're not supposed to boil them to death... in any case, we decided to go with hushpuppies and crabcakes instead. Hushpuppies were pretty decent and the crabcakes a little bready. Overall i wouldn't say it was worth the price...

Slightly overpriced, but still decent food at an awesome location. Whether you sit inside or outside, you have a great view of the river and people boating by. We enjoyed our appetizers here way more than our meal, I think if we go back we may just do a bunch of those instead of entrees. First off, they bring you crab hush puppies which are delicious. They really didn't taste too much like crab, but they were still pretty freaking good. We also went with the fried blue crab claws which are good, but could use a better/more creative dipping sauce than just cheap ranch dressing. And of course a garlic crab...super messy but super delicious, wish I would have gotten 2. Entrees were kinda blah. They brought them out way too early, we had just gotten our appetizers so that didn't help. On top of that, we both got something with shrimp in it, these turned out to be some pretty puny, definitely previously frozen, overcooked little buggers. C'mon, this is suppose to be a decent seafood place. You at least have to do shrimp right!!! Overall, I'd come back and just chow down on a bunch of different apps.

I'm kind of amazed this place has managed to garner anything more than 3 stars. I'll start with the good, which is minimal.. The crab soup was decent, a little sweet but still pretty tasty.....and that's it.. Now the bad... I don't understand how a restaurant labeling itself a crab house can't cook crab. I had a mixed plate that included shrimp, a crab cake and a few snow crab legs. First off I ordered grilled shrimp but got fried and the "local's favorite" crab cake was nearly all filler. Now the crab.. I'm pretty sure the cook dropped into the steamer and forgot about it, but it somehow made it onto my plate. The meat inside was so overcooked, dry and tough that it had shriveled inside the shell into a sort of crab "jerky". I'm not that picky but I've had crab legs at $5 Asian buffet's that were better. Aside from the poor food, the service wasn't the greatest either. My waitress wasn't bad but the hostess wasn't at all welcoming and didn't even show a hint of friendliness. I left without anyone saying a word... no "thank you" or.. "come back again". They seem to just lack the common courtesies that any restaurant should have. Needless to say there is no reason I would ever really want to go to this place again.

I was very impressed. Service was friendly and efficient. The She crab chowder was excellent as an appetizer. I had the Carolina Platter and was very pleased. The only down side was they didn't have beer on tap, but they had a nice selection of local beer. Highly recommend.

This place is average at best. We had lunch here, and everything was just OK. Nothing was special or even above average. The raw oysters ($9 half dz) were large and not shucked that well. Lots of broken shell pieces and some grit. They tasted fine, but you certainly can find better. We love fish tacos ($10.79) and figured they would be a good choice. The tacos contained a few bite sized pieces of grilled fish that were completely overpowered by the pickled cucumbers on the taco. I actually thought the flavors went well together, but there was twice as much cucumber as fish. The waffle fries were excellent, but a side salad was fair. Service was fine and drinks fairly priced. Lots of good choices in the area. You can find better.

  • Michael C.

There was a slight wait but the hostess (very polite) suggested immediate seating at a table in the bar area. It was very comfortable. Service was prompt and courteous. No beer on tap but they offered a wide selection of bottled and canned suds. Shrimp & Grits were a tasty variation on this traditional dish. They use a brown gravy that was excellent. Will definitely go back!

Service was excellent! Food not so much. She crab soup had shell in every bite. Hush puppies were hard as rocks!

"There are a few locations in town so make sure you show up at the one where you made your reservation" FJ It might not be a purely authentic SC crab house but food was very good. We had 16 people and got great service, Passed around about a dozen appetizers and all were very good. And we weren't shy about tasting each others dinners and they were all very good as well. Would definitely recommend it.

I'd been here years ago and I remembered it being better. We arrived around 4pm on a Friday and there were only people sitting at the bar. The hostess looked at us like "what are you doing here?" and I asked "Are we too early for dinner?" She looked confused and had to think about it before saying "no." Kind of weird since the place is open from lunch onward. The food wasn't bad, I just recalled it being better (and a lot more crowded...even for 4pm). I'd go back, but it's not a must-eat place when I visit Charleston.

I've got pictures of myself and my family on the dock of this resteraunt from when I was like four years old. I still enjoy wandering down to the little boat dock and landing, looking for manatees in the water and watching the bridge open up for large boats to come through. That said, at some point in the last 6 years my family decided that while the food was alright, we mostly liked the atmosphere and hush puppies. For that reason, recently we've only gone to get appetizers and drinks, which is the perfect plan. We get to hang out, and enjoy the scenery without spending lots of money on a meal thats just alright.

Wow would have liked to have ordered an app and wished the manager wasn't so rude when we attempted to add friends to our group. Not friendly and pretty snotty. And I live here. :( After my beverage order not served... Dont waste your $$ Go to California dreaming. Would not come back if it was free.

  • Doug W.

The food here is average, as is the service. It's at a nice location on the water, and sitting outside is a nice experience. Generally, however, the seafood is overpriced for the quantity received. (Coast is a much better, comparable restaurant in Charleston.) Because from previous experiences I wasn't expecting the food to be great, I was going to just order a sandwich; the sandwiches are reasonably priced. I got the BLT that has a fried green tomato. There was no tang to the tomato, so it was an average sandwich. I asked for the mayonnaise on the side, but it came on the sandwich and on the side. My wife got the "Carolina Platter," which costs $24. It has a few crab legs, a crab cake, and about 6 fried shrimp. Pretty expensive for not a whole lot of food. But if you just want some variety, it's okay. Overall, though, this place is not impressive. It's kind of a novelty type restaurant. It has a good location, but doesn't have great seafood. ~4/6/12

Thank you Crab House for this Southern experience :) Hush puppies and collard greens are now crossed off of my list of things to try and savor! My food was amazing. We came for Restaurant Week and they had a prix fixe menu for $20 each. I thought it was a great deal. Everything was excellent. The shrimp and grits were delicious, as were my crabcakes. The services was friendly and attentive, and I have to say this is the first time I've eaten somewhere where I could look out the window and see dolphins :)

  • Isabelle G.

We enjoyed the BBQ Shrimp and Grits so much that we went back for a second time. Yes, you read correctly; BBQ Shrimp and Grits and they are amazing so stop doubting me and order it, you'll love it! The place is right on the water, the seafood is pretty decent and the entire ambiance is just what you'd want from Charleston.

I've been passing this place on my way to work and home since I moved here in July this year. My wife and I decided to stop in last weekend on a sunday. She had also been wanting to try it out. I ordered a grilled Mahi sandwich, coleslaw and fries. Our waitress Kim was AWESOME! She brought out some crab-puppies and they probably lasted about 2 minutes between my wife and I. The mahi was amazing, the buns were a type of bread I can only seem to get back in Missouri and the ONLY thing I forgot to order on it was a piece of cheese. EXCELLENT food and our bill was around $30 so for us that isn't terribly expensive. My wife ordered fried shrimp and ate all of it, and she usually has to take leftovers home. We will DEFINITELY be coming back :)

    (5)
  • Sarah H.

This place has a very generic Lowcountry menu. We keep coming back every year for a casual evening on the porch during sunset even though we could have a better dinner elsewhere. The half dozen blue crab is the best thing on the menu. Skip dessert, Piggly Wiggly has better pies.

It's an Ok location.. Found our self a table on the deck ...apparently they forgot us they made us sit out there ....and I had to go back to remind them that i am alive...( poorly sericed , probably that day or it was busy but i lost my appetite) Food was OK nothing ordinary I have had better, sorry but that's pretty factual, Oh and the music was very loud like a night club. ... Not going their

Just went here for the first time and had a great experience! I tried bites of three entrees and had one of my own and then were all great! I definitely enjoyed "firefly friday." The punch one was my favorite. I'll be back for sure!

Some of the best sea food I've had. Manager noticed my crab legs had some legs missing and he brought me a new set of legs. I didn't even complain or even have a chance to complain. Very nice staff and nice view of the river too.

Great local crab restaurant with a variety of options for seafood lovers and those who are not. I loved the she-crab soup. It was the first time I had this type of soup but this restaurant's rivals the best New England clam chowders. I would have it again in a second. I had a small dinner salad (with the house crab ranch dressing which has chunks of crab in it!) as well as a crab cake on the side. Both were excellent. Other food we tried were the crab stuffed mushrooms (a bit to much cheese, but delicious), the chicken parm (tasty and generous portion...bellissimo). The wine was poured generously as well. There are no beers on tap, but they served at least the local brew (Palmetto). I did not ask about others that were available. Our server, Katelyn, was very attentive but also was not too anxious to serve us (we like to enjoy our first cocktail before ordering). She got our special requests perfect and was quick to ask if we needed anything else and if we were enjoying our meal. She asked if we wanted separate checks before we asked. Great job and very pleasant to deal with.

I ate here recently and figured I would post my experience. As you may see from my other posts, I am more of a meat connoisseur than seafood, but still enjoy a nice salmon or fish dinner. The restaurant was nicely decorated and was a very nice location on the water. They started us off with some type of fried crab ball. I didn't think I would like them, as I am not a crab fan, but they were delicious. They had a very sweet taste and were very good. For my meal, I ordered a surf & turf combo, the special salmon with a honey type glaze and a rib eye steak. The flavor of both was very good. It was a little light on the salt, but nothing I couldn't fix quickly. The waffle fries on the side had very good flavor as well. My reasons for the 3 stars and not higher. My food was all slightly warm, not hot as It should have been. My steak was requested med-rare and while half of it was cooked med-rare, the other half was VERY rare. I guess I should have requested medium and I would have been much happier with this. I thought the price was very good for the amount of food. The service was also very friendly and good. I would eat here again while in Town, but would also want to try some others before going back.

I carefully collaborated yelp reviews with distance from hotel and what people were in the mood for. I made sure the kids were ready, and shoved my husband out of his post rugby tournament slump (total exhaustion). We drove (thank you GPS). We arrived. No wait, and waterfront seating. As we perused the menu, I was impressed. Everything was really reasonable, as far as I'm concerned. I ordered the coconut shrimp. My husband had the appetizer BBQ shrimp and grits (I questioned this one cause he played 3 matches today and I knew he was hungry). My 6 year old had the cheese pizza. Waters were had by all. Everything arrived very quickly, which was nice cause the kids were tired and we were too. Our sweet waitress, Julie, kept our waters full while we waited and brought us a basket of hush puppies. Everything arrived. oh.my .gee. It was so good. The grits were fluffy and creamy and lovely. My husband was in love with his shrimp and grits. He said they should offer the BBQ version as an entrée as well as the regular shrimp and grits. My coconut shrimp was really good- 10-12 BIG shrimp fried in coconut and then served with a sweet dipping sauce. I had grits and collards to go with it, which were also awesome. My 6 year old loved her pizza-- my husband and I each had a try and it was really very good. The baby ate some of everything. All in all? Fast, good, food.. decent price... kid friendly... awesome service. Highly recommend. This month they are having a great deal too-- $25 all you can eat snow crab. Pretty awesome if you like crab.

Love this place for a casual dinner with friends. It's family friendly as well. The crab claw appertizer is great...lightly fried with ranch dressing. The mussels in the garlic and butter sauce is amazing. Order extra bread to soak up all the sauce...so yummy! I always go for the Crab Legs...can't go wrong with them. My friends ordered the traditional shrimp and grits with sausage and the barbequed shrimp and grits. Both looked yummy and rich. Great place to go in your flip flops...sit outside on the deck overlooking the water.

Hush puppies = phenomenal! That was probably the best thing of the meal to be honest and its kinda sad. I was hoping for something to blow me away and that was not the case, at all.

Can't believe this place is billed as a crab house because there's not many crab dishes to chose from--- what a disappointment. The food isn't too bad - fresh fish, shrimp, etc. -- basic tourist trap will not repeat.

Good fried shrimp, oysters, and scallops on a Tuesday.

Very touristy, but great view and surprisingly, the best She Crab soup I've had on Charleston.

This place was great. We sat outside on the deck and the view was beautiful. We shared the crab pot (fresh, yum!) and the calamari (good, but pretty standard). We went on a Friday night around 7 and got right in. It server was very attentive and the atmosphere was perfect for our family- including our 3-year-old.

What happened to this place??? The food use to be so wonderful! NOT anymore! My husband and I went there this past weekend. Food was terrible, didn't taste fresh! The seafood tasted like it came out of a deep freezer. Our server was terrible. Very slow, far from professional! We have been eating here for years, but we will not return now. Not for the money!

    (1)
  • Terri D.

Go for the view, not the food. I went for late lunch, maybe dinner is better. My daughter got a mahi filet sandwich (so-so), I had a limp salad, the rest of the food I have forgotten. But boy it is lovely looking at the boats going by on the river - we even saw dolphins.

Stopped for lunch. Not crowded. VG service. Hushpuppies served at table weren't overly greasy. Oyster Po'boy was excellent . SheCrab soup was good but a bit bland. Overall fine but I won't rush back

Cool place. I called in reservations the day of and about 5 hours or so before and they accommodated my date and I just fine. The weather was rainy but I could tell that the seating facing the water would have been a choice spot to have on sunny days. The service was really good. The food was good as well. The Oyster appetizers were fantastic!

I highly recommend the Charleston Crab House. I ordered a Salmon special with crab meat stuffing. It was very very good. The grits and greens that I had for the sides were excellent as well. Service was top notch. I plan to come back to try the shrimp and grits next time.

I had not been here in a very long time and it has gotten even better than i remember. The main dishes are a little expensive but i totally think they are worth it. You have a lot of options to make a really good dining experience. I didn't want to spend a whole lot of money on one dish so i went with the crab cake sandwich and a half pound of peel and eat shrimp. I had more than enough food. The shrimp were huge and had a great flavoring to them. I felt like i could have eaten several pounds but it was very filling. The crab cake sandwich was really good although i would recommend asking for some remoulade sauce to put on it instead of the tartar sauce they provide. the tartar sauce was good still but i like the remoulade better. I have had really bad crab cakes at supposedly awesome restaurants but this was of good size and didn't have that greasy feeling and taste you get from some places. We had the hot wings for an appetizer and i really doubted that a crab house had good wings but these were really good and awesome sized wings at that. Very crispy wings. The hush puppies didnt taste too much like crab but they were light and fluffy and had a great taste to them. I can see myself going back here again. The waitresses were very attentive often times i had two waitresses checking on me making sure we were full on drinks and everything we needed. Service was A+. I spent 55.00 total with two adults and a 4 year old.

This place was awesome!!! My friends and I saw this restaurant on our way to Folly Beach and fell in love!! We didn't want to leave! Our waiter, Neil, was awesome!! The location was beautiful - right next to the river! there were people arriving by boat! How amazing is that?!?!?! And the FOOD!!! Delicious!! We ordered the Oysters McClellan as an appetizer... OMG! Not only were they cooked PERFECTLY, they were HUGE!! My friend and I ordered King Crabs and Snow Crabs while the third ordered the Crab Pot. ALL DELICIOUS!! We went into a crab coma afterwards! We didn't want to leave - just keep eating!! Great atmosphere, great service and even better food!!!

Touristy place as seen on TV literally it was renovated on a home show a few years ago. The food was good but service was slow. There was great views of the water but not from our seat. I would say pass.

First things first... if you are visiting during mosquito season DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT SIT OUTSIDE. We had arrived around 8 pm and wanted to sit outside since, it was a nice night and the water view was great. Within minutes a swarm of mostiqutos started attacking my group. These things were killers... I had multiple bites even through my jeans, and I was swatting them off by the tons from my father. We asked the waitress for insect candles and spray, but it had absolutely no effect on them. Obviously, within 10 minutes after sitting down we moved inside because we could not handle it. Mind you, I am from Miami and am used to getting attacked by mosquitos but I left that night with at least 20 bites on me. Now the staff was super nice, and very apologetic about the mosquitos. They did explain that it had recently rained and due to the current drought situation the mosquitos has become more active. As for the food, it was okay. Nothing amazing, but not bad either. Everyone in my group was satisfied with their plates, but I don't think we'll be rushing back to Charleston to have it again. I think it's a onetime experience type of place.

Went here for dinner while staying for a week on Seabrook Island. This restaurant was far better than any other we went to during the week especially Shrimper's on Kiawah Island and Gilligan's. Our server (I believe her name was Sarah) was outstanding. The food was also equally delicious. If you are in this area avoid the over-priced, pretentious restaurants on the resort islands and head here. My 5 year old also loved the view of the water and draw bridge.

    (4)
  • Joe N.

Nice casual dining experience right on the water. Sit outside to watch the drawbridge and the boats go by. The food is very good, reasonably priced and the servings are generous. It feels a bit touristy but that didn't detract from the dining experience at all. The service is fine and the food came in a timely manner. Overall, this is a good choice for an inexpensive, casual meal.

  • Henning S.

Sorry guys but you must have been in another restaurant. Food was not fresh, barely warm, the best was the side dish and it's quite expensive over all. Def no recommendation, get a good 2 pizzas for that money!!!

Now that's seafood baby! Sit outside and enjoy some sunshine. The friendly waiters will make you feel right at home, even if your vocabulary doesn't normally include the word, "y'all."

I came here for dinner on the 4th of July so it was super crowded but luckily it was just the two of us as our other friends don't eat seafood. I have heard this spot is considered a tourist trap but it had the seafood that I wanted so I didn't care. The wait was about 20 minutes for us since we had only 2 people but it was over an hour long for larger parties. The host is located at the entrance of the restaurant but you have to stand outside and wait because there is no inside waiting area. The inside of the restaurant has two floors including a bar area on the first floor. Luckily, we got seated on the second floor because the first floor seemed pretty hectic. We started off with the sauteed mussels and the bacon wrapped stuffed shrimp. The mussels came in a garlic butter and wine sauce that was really flavorful. Good portion size of mussels with some bread on the side so totally worth it. The bacon wrapped shrimp only had 4 pieces and costed just as much as the mussels. The shrimp tasted great but a little pricey for the amount you get. They each were about a little less than $10. For our main entrees, we decided to split a half dozen raw oysters and the crab house crabpot. The raw oysters were still a little sandy but tasted fine and were nicely sized. As for the crabpot, it came with Alaskan Snow Crab, King Crab, shrimp, sausage, corn, and potatoes. It cost a little over $30 but there was quite a lot of food as we were easily able to split it. The crabpot tasted good and I enjoyed the variety of ingredients that came with it. Overall, the restaurant exceeded my expectations because of it being a tourist trap. Food was good and the service was fine which definitely satisfied my seafood craving!

Just dropped $307 for a group of 8. We celebrated my brother's and new sister in law wedding with a dinner before their cruise tomorrow. Apps: 6 cups of She Crab soup and a basket of hush puppies....delicious!!!!! 1. I had grilled trio with collards. Perfect! 2 & 3. Son and daughter had snow crab legs. Excellent!!! 4. Brother had Captain's Platter. He loved it! 5. New Sister in law had king and snow crab legs. Excellent!!! 6. Wife had shrimp and grits. Loved it! 7. Grandma had low country boil. Loved it!!!! 8. Aunt had flounder. Delish!!! Service was excellent!!!!! View was perfect!!!!

    (5)
  • Brenda V.

Place is fantastic! My husband ordered the fried whole flounder, served with "smashed potatoes' and cole slaw. He said it was amazing. I ordered the grilled trio (mahi mahi, scallops & shrimp), served with Lima beans (who serves Lima beans???) and red Charleston rice. I ate the scallops and fish which were fantastic. Once I took the sausage out of the rice, it was very good. My husband ate my shrimp. Our seat was right beside the window with a view of the river where we watched Dolphins and the draw bridge go up a couple times. Would come back again.

    (5)
  • Mike M.

Yes another 5 star review. love this place, been coming here on and off for over 15 years. My mother in law loved the flounder cooked in a paper bag. The seafood is really fresh and really do love the slaw!!!! Yes the restrooms are clean, that alone gives this place a star. The servers have always been nice and professional. My goodness get the hush puppies!! So good, as is the crab dip. My favorite is the fried shrimp and my wifes is the crab legs. Sure it is a bit pricey but every now and then it is worth it, plus you dont have to drive to Folly and look for parking, that is a big plus!

  • Rachel K.

I have been coming here every year since I was six years old. It is family tradition! And this really is a great place to bring the kids, the in-laws, the grandparents--everyone. As soon as you're seated, they bring you a giant heap of crab hush puppies. The recipe has changed over the years, but they're always phenomenal. We choose to sit outside because you get a lovely view of the river and all of the boats that go by! Side Story: One of the groups next to us on the patio had fallen into the river nearby after their boat had sprung a leak! The restaurant actually brought out heaters for them to sit by so they could dry off and stay warm. How's that for service? All of the employees are friendly and attentive, as expected. I usually order the Shrimp Scampi (to die for) but I went with the Crab Cake Platter this time around and was not as impressed as I expected to be. They were a little dry. Still, this place is one of my absolute favorites. The only unfortunate part of the experience here is the massive wait. Everything else is marvelous!

Sometimes you just gotta get that crab leg fix. One night, it dawned on me that I haven't had crab legs in almost 2 years, and since I drive by the crab shack multiple times daily, so the next move was obvious. I do have to say, when I first got there, I thought I was having an acid flashback. The huge sign over the front door is upside down! I stood there in the rain for a minute or two trying to figure out if what I was seeing was real, but it sure as shit is! Back to the point. The service was fantastic. The hostess greeted me with a warm welcome, and despite the lingering confusion I was feeling from my experience out front, she was patient while I was trying to decide if I wanted to sit at the bar, take a table, or go home and reevaluate the decisions I made in my youth. I took the table and my waitress kept the friendly service flowing. A book was my date that night, and I figured that with the high volume that this place accompanies, I would have a decent wait. Wrong. The crab legs came out twice as fast as I expected. They were pretty good, so I decided to give dessert a try... Hell yes. Three words: salted caramel cheesecake. And it was the shiz. You must try it when you visit.

Been here many times. Ok place, food is good, people are nice. The best thing is the view of the river. Just go to get your fix of good seafood. Far from the tourist traps. Nice place to relax and take the family. Prices are good. Try it, you'll like it. Frank G

The atmosphere is delightful as it sits right on the river with indoor and outdoor seating. The server was attentive and very friendly. Our food was delivered at a comfortable pace, we waited for nothing but we were not rushed. The hush puppies were a bit greasy but still crunchy and delicious. My she crab soup was flavorful, creamy, with plenty of crabmeat. The serving size was nice for the cost. Our entree of shrimp and grits was larger than I expected but used small shrimp. The grits were very creamy and the gravy was flavorful. The meal was very nice and we were too full for dessert!

Other than Shem Creek you are not going to get these types of views anywhere else unless you own a house on the water! The food is your typical American fare and is neither bad or great. My reasoning for the three stars is although the service is friendly it was very slow during the lunch hour on our visit. It was cool though just tying the boat up and grabbing some lunch. The boat dock is very small and probably 4 boats max (tied up outboard of each other). The prices are a little high but I guess you expect that with a prime location.

Grits was a 5, everything else a 4. The beer batter on the shrimp, oysters, and flounder was very tasty. Lowcountry boil was also good, seasoning wasn't too spicy. Good service and good seafood with a GREAT view.

We vacation in Sunset Beach, NC but took a day trip to Charleston (beautiful, wonderful place btw). We decided on Crab House and had a very sweet server named Thomas (I think :/). The only real complaint I had was when it started to rain a little we moved inside just to be safe and went from their very nice deck/patio to an awkward corner of the restaurant with no view whatsoever..it looked like the table shouldn't have even been there. I ordered the grilled seafood trio which consisted of mahi-mahi, scallops, shrimp, Charleston red rice and lima beans. The mahi was cooked well but could've used more flavor, whatever they put on the scallops was delicious, shrimp was great as well and the red rice was better than I expected too. I could do without the lima beans lol. I ordered a margarita which was a little small but still good. My family seemed to enjoy everything they ordered. They brought out a slice of key lime pie for my birthday which was yummy as well. All in all, I had good seafood and that's a successful meal to me.

This is what I was looking for when I wanted fresh seafood in Charleston. We had a big seafood boil, she-crab soup, and raw oysters. It was all fantastic. The boil was full of tons of seafood and the veggies to go with it- shrimp, crab legs, mussels, sausage, corn on the cob, etc. It was all perfectly done and it was a TON of food. The 2 of us barely finished it. The rest of our group seemed happy with their meals as well. Reading these reviews, I'm sort of intrigued by the crab hush puppies as I don't remember any being served to our table. If we lived in the area I'd definitely go again! A classier place but you don't have to worry about feeling overdressed.

I think the prime reason for you to choose this place rather than the restaurant in downtown is the location. Spectacular bridge & boat view could make your food tastes even better. Sometimes you can even see Dolphins. Low country style seafood with sausage is always good. The fried scallop is the other must try dish. Quality of snow crab changes with season. If you come in winter or spring then the crabs may not be your choice.

Rare to think about giving some place 5 stars but this was a no question about it moment. The drinks were great on a hot summer evening, the atmosphere was perfect, the food was stellar and the service (thanks to "Big Mac"-Mackenzi) was lightning fast!!! Just had to think about my next beer and it appeared in front of me. The specials we spot on, rice was totally amazing and couldn't of picked a more perfect place for our quick zip through Charleston. Next time through we will definitely be back!

Whenever I am in Charleston, I like to go to the Charleston Crab House. The wait time is never too long (Our party of five only took 10 minutes to be seated indoors), and the restaurant has a gorgeous view of the waters and marshland around the area. The wait staff are always friendly, and the food is delicious! I always order a cup of their She Crab Soup, which is perhaps my favorite starter on their menu. It has an amazing, creamy taste to it. I then had the Charleston Shrimp and Grits, which also had some sausage in it, and a nice brown gravy. It was very good. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, along with the grits and sausage. This is the second time I have been to the Charleston Crab House, and it will not be my last! I will keep going back for their great food, and atmosphere!

After reading all the reviews my family and decided to eat and it was absolutely outstanding our server Grace was awesome and attentive the food was possibly the best sea food I have ever eaten in 39 years. If you are in Charleston and eat sea food make sure you check this place out five stars all the way

Get here a little after 6 pm before the crowd comes and you can get a really good seat by the window. I would highly recommend the crab house crabpot if you want a little bit of everything including fresh snow crab, shrimp mussels, and sausages all nicely coated in a garlic butter sauce. I prefer the snow crab meat because Blue crab meat is tougher. Free hushpuppies on every table. ^^

Stopped in for lunch after a morning meeting down the street, we'd never been and it was a beautiful day, so why not?! We were seated immediately, chose the outside patio and our drink orders were taken. Once they returned, we were brought deliciously sweet and golden brown hush puppies, they were smaller than norm but so good! I had the crab cake lunch, with waffle fries and coleslaw. The crab cake was cooked just right and full of flavor. The fries were a little on the greasy side, so I didn't really eat them. Coleslaw was sweet and crunchy, a good side. My husband had the popcorn shrimp lunch and said it's some of thr best popcorn shrimp he's ever had. I had to taste one and it wasn't just fried in batter, but also seasoned quite well. Same sides, so no difference there. Overall it was a great experience. I'd like to go back for dinner on the water one evening. The location is great to watch the water traffic go by. It's neat how people can dock and eat! I need a boat!

Atmosphere: typical seafood joint but the water makes It gorgeous. Sit on the patio! Inside the windows are foggy and it's not the best view. It's also kinda cramped. Food: Hush puppies were good. Crab legs were very good. Corn on the cob was not seasoned or buttered. The mixed drinks I got were a little sour & not that good. The calamari was slightly over cooked and chewy. Service: The two ladies we had were very good. Friendly, down to earth, & attentive. Conclusion: Good crab, good patio view, worth trying, but didn't blow me away.

Charleston Crab House is an ok place to for seafood. It's no where near the tourist trap of a certain restaurant downton that may start with a Hy and end with a man's, but it's definitely not the best seafood in town either. The staff is always pretty friendly and quick at all the locations. Our favorite location is the James Island store because we can get there by boat. Nothing better than enjoying our beautiful Charleston waters. After a long day on the river or even just an afternoon boat ride we like to pull up to the dock and sit on the back deck. The food is ok. They state that everything is local, but I just dont' know if I'm so sure about that. Sometimes the fried seafood platters can be a little greasy. I've definitely had better fried shrimp. The calamari lacks any good flavor or seasoning, pretty bland. I do however really love the bacon wrapped shrimp. Large shrimp layered with a crab stuffing, wrapped in bacon, then fried...yum! At $9 a pop for about 4 shrimp it can get a little pricey. Overall an ok place to go to grab a quick bite, but not top choice for seafood in Charleston. Happy Hour prices only apply when sitting in the bar.

Had the Baja Shrimp Salad. Nice flavors and fresh greens. Dressing was served on the side. House margarita was acceptable. Crying, screaming Toddlers at two neighboring tables detracted from ambiance. Water views are lovely although we failed to spot a manatee or dolphin. Waiter was lovely and staff was friendly. Glad we went but probably won't return since there are just too many wonderful restaurants in Charleston and surrounding area.

A lot of variety on the menu. The fried shrimp, crab cakes and seared tuna are my favorites, not to mention the hush puppies. Also the bar has recently been renovated and is spacious. Also the outside seating has a wonderful waterfront view and you can dock your boat.

Went to Charleston Crab House recently and it was very good. Have eaten at this place multiple times over the years for lunch and dinner. I think it's either hit or miss honestly. However the past few times have been excellent and the service was good. You cannot beat the view and atmosphere.

This is a step above a Red Lobster.....but barely. We had to stay at a hotel outside of the historic district and wanted some seafood so we ended up here. It was packed, but we were able to snag a seat yourself table in the lounge area. Service was super spotty and inconsistent. I was the only one drinking wine, but I ended up ordering a bottle as the wait for refills was loooooong. We never got the free hush puppies until we asked if they had any. Ooops. Ten minutes later they arrived at our table. On bite for each diner and that ended the pup mania. The grease had literally soaked in about a 1/4 of an inch into the fritter. If this is your signature freebie (like Red Lobster's cheddar biscuits) than you better do it right. Besides this is THE part of the country where these fried corn meal balls should be mastered by all cooks. The wings for an appetizer were decent with little zing from the supposed spicy buffalo glaze. The fried oysters were doused with so much sauce, the poor things lost all their crunch factor. Oysters are soft and gooey as it is, add a soggy batter to the mix, and you have a failed dish. The entrees were ok. The seared tuna slices were fanned out on a large plate -an incredibly generous serving though the reviews were mixed. One friend said she thought the fish didn't taste too fresh. NOT a good thing for a crab house just miles from the ocean. My crab leg/ shrimp combo was ok, but this dish was not a good gauge in determining a kitchen's strengths. The collard greens were great, but the other diners' waffle fries went basically untouched. Do yourself a favor and drive the extra miles to dine in the historic district. This was not a memorable culinary experience, just a waste of money.

Pleasantly surprised with the entree!!! I got the broiled sampler and my husband got the fried sampler. Everything was moist, cooked to perfection and very tasty. The slaw and mashed were also very tasty. I truly wasn't expecting it to be nearly this good. We were disappointed with the mussels app, the roll and the complimentary hush puppies (weird that they were sweet and served early). My drink was excellent. My husband was disappointed that they didn't have a single beer on tap. Really cool that you can pull your boat up to the dock. Bathrooms desperately need to be renovated. We would go back any time anyone wanted to, but not sure it's going to hit our list any time soon.

Love the hush puppies with honey butter! Our group of seven had the blackened chicken with Alfredo sauce, spicy and creamy. Then we had fried flounder with the red beans and rice, very good. Lastly the Captain's platter with shrimp, oysters and fried flounder, side of greens and red rice. The collard greens were on the salty side but the fish and seafood was seasoned and cooked well. Overall a delish meal! Nice for our crowd with kids.

We have passed this place numerous times and my husband had gone here as a kid growing up, but it took us a couple months to actually venture here for dinner. I don't know what we were waiting for!!!! We got an indoor table with an incredible view of the water. Our server came and was bright and cheery and we ordered a local craft beer and glass of wine. We started with the ahi tuna and it was delicious! We moved on to the entrees and the hubs had the Carolina Platter and I had one of the steam pots with the sausage, two kinds of crab legs, potatoes, corn, and shrimp/mussels. I even got a bib to wear so I could dig in and get dirty! It was fantastic. I haven't had such great, fresh, yummy seafood in years. After we polished off our entire entrees, we moved on to dessert. I had the chocolate cheesecake and he had the key lime pie. Both were phenomenal. I can't wait to get back to Charleston just to eat here!!!! And it's kid-family friendly, so we will be bringing the little tot back!

This out of the way crab house is worth the visit simply for the AMAZING crab hush puppies and fantastic view. The wait is usually 20-30 minutes during peak hours, but the bar is open and serves good drinks quick, so it is easy to pass the time there. Check out one of their signature drinks; you don't be disappointed (or sober). Our server was a little less attentive than I would have liked, and the portions were a tad small for the money(although we still needed a to-go box), but the food was so good I really didn't care. I had the seafood boil and wanted to eat my finger tips when I was done to make sure I got every bit of flavor off of them. My date had the seafood trio with mashed potatoes and it was delicious. The hush puppies rocked my socks off. One final thought that I don't think I've mentioned: Hush puppies = pure perfection

This is a mixed bag review they have some really STRONG points and some low points. 1- The place is really hard to find, man if we didn't have GPS we would've never gone 2- The bar is super loud, so loud that it's hard to hear yourself think, the music is GOD AWFUL, and we couldn't wait to be seated 3-It was raining cats and dogs when we went for dinner so unfortunately we were unable to sit outside, which really looks like where it's at 4-There was 5 of us for dinner a) Mom got the grilled scallops and coleslaw she wasn't overjoyed w/ that selection B- b) Dad and his friend ordered the whole fried Flounder (head, tail, and bones) with 2 sides priced at $18.99 they both raved about this, said it was the BEST fish they've ever had A+ c) Dad's friends wife ordered the mahi mahi with frenchfries- she didn't look like she liked hers much at all-C grade d) I ordered the Carolina Platter with grilled instead of fried shrimp, Collard greens (which were amazing and not canned) and grits (amazing as well). The crabcake was blah for me, but the rest of the dish was a seafood lover's dream-solid B+ when accounting for sides 5- The give you fried free hush puppies to start which tasted like funnel cake, delicious! 6) THE BEST PART-every bottle of wine they have on their menu is under $28!!!! I ordered a glass of wine priced at $8 then realized the bottle was $22 WHAT A DEAL!!! We ordered the bottle and all had a glass!

I don't know where to begin. Food and atmosphere are great! BUT! We arrived around 7pm with the sun still up and the heat still pretty high. We had a party of 3 and were seated pretty much at a wooden rail with stools right in the sun. The hostess never gave us an option or asked if we would be comfortable sitting there or at a table in the shade or under an umbrella. We were reluctant at first but decided not to make a big fuss and sat. We were never given a drink menu or told if any specials were available. Our waitress Hannah was awful. She didn't take any of our empty glasses when we ordered new ones, she repeatedly interrupted us mid conversation without an 'excuse me', no manners what so ever and left us hanging for awhile. We were ready to order more drinks and more food but were so put off by her that we decided to get our check and leave. We were so disappointed because we never get to see one another and wanted to soak up the view and have drinks and conversation. Thanks to Hannah, that didn't happen. Took our business else where. This place gets a rating of 4 stars for prices and atmosphere but one star for service.

The views are beautiful, but the seafood is less than desirable. The sea scallops were very small amd chewy. The mahi was decent, but again a little overcooked. Expensive for the quality of food!

Horrible. Absolutely horrible. 2ND time I've been there and both times I'm quite positive I would have gotten better dishes at red lobster. What a shame. This time I spent 29 dollars on their "world famous" steampot. This bought me (1)Tiny king crab cluster (1) Snow crab cluster both overcooked til they were rubber and I couldn't even crack them to get the meat out. (6) rather small shrimp (6) mussels (1) nibblet ear of corn and (1) little potato cut in half. Everything was very bland and everything is so over cooked it's rubbery mush. Service was good but the food is awful. Tourist trap!

If you want a place that is not organized and unprofessional this is the spot for you!!! We were seated at 7:00 and walked out at 8:30 with no food!! Waited that long then complained and manager came and said "oh waited 20 mins"?? Um no we waited an hour and half. Came from bluffton sc for Mother's Day. What a waste! There are many other places in Charleston that are way better!!!

Beautiful place, beautiful view, and the best flounder ever! Plus the ahi was even delicious ! Everything was so perfect! The hush puppies were almost sweet! Hubs wanted to put powder sugar on his, but that's just the red neck coming through. The staff were so friendly and helpful to us and then again to each other. A lot of good people working in here to make this an awesome place to dine!

Tried this place out due to the reviews and wanted to have a nice dinner by the water before heading back home. The Seminoles were playing and I kind of wanted to sit inside and watch the game because there were no TV's outside but the wife insisted that we sit outside which turned out to be a great idea. Weather was perfect. Megan was an awesome server which was really the reason this place got a 4 star. She was very pretty, attentive and extremely quick and checked up on us quite frequently even when it got pretty busy, oh did I also she was pretty? Haha Food was okay in my opinion nothing special. As an appetizer we went with the blue crab claws... Pretty pricey for the amount of food you get($8.95). I got the seafood boil and my wife had the low country boil. I was still pretty hungry so I decided to get a soft crab sandwich which was pretty good on the claw parts of the crab but when I bit into the middle thats when the yellow gushy stuff came flowing out.... Blahhhh had to wash that down with my beer! They also did not have draft beers either just bottles but it was no biggie since Megan brought out a fresh chilled glass each time. Overall the service we had was great and the atmosphere was awesome wish we had more time to sit around and drink. Food was mediocre and prices were high. We might be back but probably just for drinks and to hang out on the deck.

Sitting on the water. With friends, family or date night. Oysters McClellanville were so yummy..next time i am getting 12 not 6 :) and holy crab cakes batman. I am particular about my crab cakes....well with hardly any filler or breading...these are the best crab cakes since i worked for Louis Osteen!!! Always been one of our "places" and probably always will be. Very patient staff and friendly. Thanks Mr.Keener....we will see ya soon!

  • Pete T.

The view is great but the food leaves a lot to be desired. The cook was too heavy handed on everything from the ceasar salad dressing to the seasoning on the rubbery scallops. Even the popular hush puppies were sub-par, as they were dripping with grease. It was Captain D's or Long John Silver quality with a $25+ a plate price. That being said, the service was polite and prompt, the decor was nice and the restrooms were clean.

Service from Lauren was great, but food is poor. We were in Charleston for the weekend and gave this restaurant two chances. Apps are over priced, king crab legs for $38 were horrible. We also visited Follybeach crab shack which far surpasses this anyday.

Stayed on James Island during our visit to Charleston in May 2012; we wanted to try a spot nearby that was local and near the water. Charleston Crab House definitely delivers in terms of its location; we had a lovely spot outside and even saw dolphins swimming - great entertainment for adults and children! Food was tasty but I wouldn't say memorable; we received complimentary crab hush puppies (delish!) and I ordered a soft-shell crab sandwich (a little too much bread but good flavor overall) and my sweetie ordered a snapper sandwich; unfortunately, his particular snapper filet was a very tough part of the fish which made it inedible. Luckily the staff was very apologetic and did not charge us for his order. This place seems to be popping with locals and tourists; food isn't anything too spectacular but it's all about location, location, location for Charleston Crab House. We would definitely return just to snag a seat outside and enjoy the view of the water. Food = 3 stars Service = 5 stars (gotta love that southern hospitality!) Location = 5+ stars

Average food alert! The same hush puppies you'd find anywhere. I ordered a fried shrimp basket and upon consumption, immediately regretted it. (I could feel the heartburn as I walked out to the parking lot.) A slight server miscommunication also got me an opened can of thai-spiced wheat beer instead of the IPA I was really interested in. Cool nautical decor though. I'll give it another shot next time I'm in town, but I'm not over the moon on Charleston Crab House.

The complimentary hushpuppies were adorable and fried to perfection! Good view on the dock, wish the bridge was a bit farther, but that's not their fault. The staff were exceptionally friendly. We had crab bisque and the crab pot, both were excellent. The waffle fries were great. Why 4 stars? I didn't like the collard green.

This was our first visit to this location and we loved the food! The Shecrab soup was the best I've had! We will defiantly be back. Service was not the best. If they worked on their Customer service, even just a smile out of our waitress and I would of given 5 stars.

    (4)
  • Barbara L.

The flounder sandwich and mahi-mahi were great. The sides (waffle fries, salad) were nothing special. Cute sort of "throwback" atmosphere and the kids enjoyed the views of the water (dolphins!) and nearby bridge. Worth stopping if you're in the area.

Good seafood, but nothing spectacular. Good sized portions, but nothing overboard. Soft shell crab was the best thing we had (among eight people) and scallops were pretty good, as well. Popular, crowded local place with good service and friendly staff. It's really a pretty good place to eat, but we have had better seafood on Charleston and Folly Beach.

My family ate here for lunch on June 24. We ate at this location because of the limited parking in Historic Charleston where the other location is. We ordered calamari for an appetizer, the shrimp steamer and chilled peel and eat shrimp with a house salad as our entrees. We also ordered a side of collard greens. The calamari tasted like fried chicken livers to me... the marinara sauce was good, but the thai sauce wasn't as good. My husband said the shrimp steamer was delicious and it actually had flavor, the potatoes lacked flavor, but the sausage and shrimp were tasty. The peel and eat shrimp were really good and the cocktail sauce was very tasty! The collards were seasoned well and didn't seem to be out of a can. They serve hushpuppies as a complimentary appetizer and they were good, but needed a dipping sauce/butter/ketchup, etc. We arrived about 1 PM and the place was full, but had no wait time. Our waitress was friendly and allowed us time to look over the menu. She was attentive throughout the meal. If we vacationed in Charleston again, we would eat at Charleston's Crab House again.

The food was decent, the view of the water is wonderful - we saw some dolphins! My server (Elizabeth) was the sweetest and so helpful, and the manager (Baxter) was also awesome. The service could have been faster but you never really know if that's the floor or the kitchen causing it. I liked the she crab soup but everything else was just okay. I would go back and give it another shot trying something other than the raw oysters though.
