Loved their vegan wrap options and vegan cookie. I also think it's really savvy to brand health/diet food as "energy" food. And it's true! "You may forget what you eat, but your body doesn't" It was extremely hot out when I went, and Black Bean Co had refreshing food, speedy/friendly service, and was a great respite from the heat. I hope to see more Black Bean Co's pop up!

I love the variety on the menu, but sometimes the staff is clueless to the menu items. Which I'm not sure why. I have been in a few times where it is very busy and my order is wrong. And the side items are terrible and small. But otherwise the main food is good, and healthy.

OK, so they would have gotten a much better review except for a couple things. First, the wraps are good, but just that, good. Not great, not excellent, not going back for another one. Second, their idea of a side dish is a condiment cup full of cous cous or yogurt, I eat more yogurt in one bite at home. And now to top it off sides are not even included in the $9-$12 price of the wrap. just poor form BBC. Wraps are tasty though. so 2 stars

I highly recommend Black Bean Co for any veggie-vegans visiting Charleston. Their wraps, salads and sides (the vanilla bean yogurt and granola!) are all customizable and packed with fresh ingredients. Personal herbivore recommendations include the Almost Summer (swap chicken for tofu), Mega Veggie (with tofu added), and the Festival Wrap. This 3-star review is more dedicated to some unfortunate changes to quality compared to earlier Black Bean Co experiences. Two or three years ago when I was in college, when Black Bean was still semi-new, and still located on Spring Street, I ordered wraps via moped delivery at least once weekly. It's hard being hungover AND vegetarian! Back then, I would have given BBCo ALL of the stars (aka 5), as I was always treated to overstuffed, well-assembled, timely and DELICIOUS veggie-vegan wraps. I still order, and will continue to order from BBCo, but not nearly as often as I used to. Black Bean's online delivery system is still useful. I've found that the wraps no longer stay together well, delivery takes much longer (which makes sense as they gain popularity), and they now charge extra for the sides of yogurt and couscous that were once included. BBCo just isn't as great a value as it once was. Positive Notes: I haven't eaten dine-in in quite some time, so it's definitely possible that these issues are isolated to delivery orders. ALSO, they're now open late night on weekends, which my college self would have been ecstatic about! ALSO ALSO, this is still my vote for best hummus in town - that hasn't changed!

The wrap I had was called the Green Beach wrap, off the vegan side of the menu. The place was clean and the staff was friendly. Casual carry out or fine in.

When visiting Charleston I ate lunch at Black Bean. What great menu options. All satisfying in taste and natural for the body. Since I visited during the Lenten season I ate a vegan wrap, which was delicious. Along side my wrap was a generous portion for a Caesar salad. What a great place to come after a bike ride or walk down King Street. Why not give it 5 stars? This place is simply over priced. But the product is worth the $$$

What a great place for a healthy, incredibly tasty meal. I got the black and blue burrito. I chose to add chicken to the greens, black beans, fig dressing, and blue cheese - but I bypassed the rice. Even without it, it was hearty. If I lived in the area, I'd have lunch here often and try many more of their items. Go.

I love the international wrap--all their options are so fresh. Don't even get me started on the fresh homemade yogurt...I usually get 2 4oz servings on the side because 1 is just not enough of this creamy deliciousness! And fast delivery time! So easy to order online. Disappointed that the one in Mt. P closed but it is a treat to order lunch at work DT for delivery. Yum!

My favorite quick-stop in Charleston, very friendly staff and excellent menu. We usually stop there for lunch when visiting the farmers market and other shopping. Have to say though the current $1 surcharge for eggs is a bit much, particularly for the small breakfast wraps...hard to believe prices have gone up by $12 per dozen. Other than that I'd recommend anything on their menu!

  • Vanesa M.

I had the vegan Spinach Love wrap with asian tofu. It was delicious! The tortilla is Cheddar Jalapeño (don't worry it's still vegan), and it gives the wrap an extra kick in your mouth. The tofu was perfect and it all worked together. I recommend this place for vegans and non-vegans! The price didn't bother me as much since I tried this place after living in NYC and driving down from D.C., but I do agree things are overpriced for Charleston, SC.

This place has great wraps and a lot of veggie options. We found it to be a little bizarre that for a wrap place there were no options on the choice of wrap. There was also no plates or silverware for in-house orders, and then (with all the to-go containers) there was no recycling at the location. Very strange for a place that brands itself as a healthy restaurant to not have Eco-friendly pairings.

  • John J.

This place is pretty overpriced for what you get. Their ingredients are fresh and the food really does taste great but I feel like portions could be larger. The wraps are tiny and the side comes in a little plastic single spoonful container. The location is pretty ideal and often filled with tourists. Recomendation: International wrap. It's probably the best thing on the menu. A side note, I think the smoothies here are pre-made and kept in the back because although they are made with real fruit and no artificial ingredients mine was settling and warm when I got it. I think they make them in the morning and keep them in the back.

We were in the city for a tour and wanted something good and quick in the area before we departed. Everything we ordered was delicious and the service was great!

Love love love this place. They deliver which is great, and have online ordering. Usually takes awhile to get there but the delivery guy is always so nice. Their spicy goddess sauce is out of this world and the yogurt blew my mind. They flavor it themselves and make their own granola. My staple was southwest chicken wrap with a side of goddess sauce and a yogurt. I have recently moved from Charleston and Black Bean is one of the places I miss most!

  • Kimber C.

I've used the delivery a few times and am pretty happy with the healthy option. The yogurt is AMAZING! It's got a taste of honey with granola. It's a great taste with a slight crunch. The couscous is bland. They could easily change this by adding some sort of flavor/ spice to it. The wraps are hit and miss. I've had some that were amazing and some that were just ok. I will continue to order from here. I like the spring fresh, beach burrito, and rosemary chicken wrap. The honey turkey bacon club was good, but a little sweet for me.

I was downtown at Glazed Gourmet and decided to pop in. Had their Beach Burrito (I think that was the name of it). It was pretty good as far as vegan burritos go. Everything tasted fresh and the location is great. Wasn't too thrilled with the pasta salad though-pretty bland and overcooked. I'd go back.

Most reasonably priced coffee downtown. $1 if you bring your own cup. Friendly staff, and great healthy options

My wife and I took a trip to Charleston this summer and we ate at Black Bean Co more than anywhere else. My wife has some dietary restrictions so BBC was really a lifesaver, even for breakfast. It was a healthy alternative to the greasy, heavy meals at other area restaurants and it was affordable too. The menu is so extensive that we were able to try many different wraps and salads. The staff here and at James Island are great. They seem to be invested in the company and are enthusiastic about how unique of a place it is. We hope BBC will expand to the Raleigh area someday. It would be all the rage around here.

The all natural smoothie is what lured me into Black Bean, when I asked about the ingredients their base is Nantucket nectar drinks, that isn't natural. their energy food and drinks are processes. black bean appetizer was horrible. Wrap was your typical wrap nothing special and nothing to brag natural about. very disappointed.

  • Lindsey C.

There's so much to choose from here & I love that they offer vegan & healthier options. They have your basic wraps as well as an array of more "adventurous" combinations. The coffee is also fantastic! I was a bit surprised that a wrap place seemingly promotion health (i.e. wrap categories called "natural energy) didn't offer anything organic, and the only sugar offered with coffee was Splenda or refined white sugar. Didn't seem to fit their model. Otherwise, it's a cute little cafe and great lunch place. The staff was friendly enough, perhaps a bit unprofessional (personal conversations at the counter in between customers) but nothing that would have ruined the experience. Overall, there's nothing here you couldn't make at home, but it sure is nice to have a healthier alternative to all the fast food and junk out there!

Healthy, Healthy, Healthy, Healthy, Healthy. Don't look for the salt shaker. No chips. Just Healthy. Lots of vegetable related energy going on up in here.

I really want to love this place!! Fresh & creative menu with loads of veggie options, right up my alley! My Festival wrap had great flavor, but alas, was awkwardly constructed - half of the ingredients were stone cold & some were warm (huh??). And the shoddy service left me feeling like I should have just made the wrap myself...

I'm a big fan of Black Bean--the concept of healthy energy food, and the commitment to reasonable prices. Our family has occasionally been eating at one or another of their restaurants since they first opened downtown a few years ago. The food has it pluses and minuses--it is generally healthy (although the wraps are made of white flour), but as other reviewers have mentioned the preparation is generally bland. The presentation is too. (Compare the bursting plate you get with a salad/sandwich combo at Five Loaves Cafe on Cannon St., with one of the wraps at BB.) Because the new BB restaurant on Savannah highway is near our home, we've been eating there a bit more frequently in the past month. And there have been some disappointments--specifically the blandness, and the rather small portion sizes for dinner entrees and salads/appetizers. As an example, recently one or another of us has ordered the vegan pad thai, and the portions have been radically downsized (IMHO). Not so the staff--I think there are at least 12 people working dinner service at the restaurant, a fair number of them standing around trying to look busy. They have to make a living too, but interrupting dinner 5 times to ask if everything is OK is a beyond the call of duty. We eat out a fair amount and we patronize Five Loaves and the Glass Onion several times a month. Both offer good food and fair prices, with the GO a bit pricier, but also more creative, exciting (and locally sourced) food. We really want Black Bean to succeed and be a regular stop, but compared to both of the above restaurants, they are falling behind. Keeping this rating at three stars for the generally decent wraps and salads at lunch for the time being.

This place is pretty mediocre. Their soups are pretty good, but the rest of the food on the menu that I've tried just didn't do it for me. It was bland, and the chicken was cubed. Not a fan of cubed meats. It also made my stomach hurt both times after eating it. I've tried about 4-5 different menu items since my friend took me once, and we've had it catered through work. I wouldn't spend my own money here, which is unfortunate because I think Charleston needs all the healthy/organic restaurants it can get.

I went here for dinner the other night looking for something quick and cheap but not fast food. That's pretty much what we got. Much better quality ingredients compared to local fast food sandwich places. I had the Festival wrap with chicken and it was pretty tasty. I had couscous for my side but wasn't a fan. The girl up front switched it out for a side of the Vegan Potato Salad which was surprisingly delicious. I will definitely go back and would recommend it for a quick healthy option which isn't a plentiful option in that area of downtown.

I used to LOVE Black Bean. It was always consistently delicious and great staff and customer service (James Island location). However, since they have "expanded" to King Street and other places, not only has the food provided to be less than average, the staff is lazy, never gets orders correct, but they have increased their prices AND no longer offer a side. I have a hard time paying $10 for a wrap that is mainly lettuce these days. I am guessing that ridiculous rent they have to pay for on King Street is catching up to the consumer. Just note Black Bean, sometimes simple is the way to go. Bigger is not always better. Your customers are paying the price for your aggressive, unorganized growth.

Such a wonderful place to eat and enjoy lunch with friends. I loved that it had vegan/vegetarian options since I am vegetarian. Not used to having so many options! I got the Black & Blue Wrap with tofu. Absolutely delicious! The servers were wonderful as well! Definitely would recommend this place!

I thought I would be really craving a salad after days of southern food, but this place reminded me how boring salad can get. Toppings like tofu and avocado were good, but not enough of them, the dressing was slightly off, and to top it off, I hated their coffee. Staff were nice, though! But there's so much good food out there, why bother?

Fresh, favorable, vegan options. I have eaten here twice and both times the food was very good. I like to sit by the window and people watch as I eat. I will make this a regular stop whenever in Charleston.

Really enjoyed this. I was stuck in Charleston and had to go somewhere within walking distance of the market. I walked in and the vegan menu is extensive. I has the Hoisin wrap, vegan chili, and some tea. It ended up being about $15. I ended up getting a cookie on the way out, too. If you are in the area and need some healthy, vegan food that tastes great - this seems like an excellent choice. I also saved the chili for dinner and it was nearly sufficient by itself.

An oasis for vegetarians and vegans in downtown Charleston. The Green Beach Burrito starts the menu, but it's hard to see how the food can get better from there. They know how to go meatless and vegan without compromising taste or leaving you hungry. Also try the vegan chocolate chip cookies with dark chocolate, flax, and coffee. Very tasty.

The food my husband and i each had was good. Chicken wrap for him, salad for me, healthy. Had to go options. But this place is not upscale, so if your looking for that this is not it. Also didn't feel Charleston-like, felt more like a chain but couldn't sort if it was or not. Food was good but we were looking for a place with ambiance.

My wrap was mediocre. The wrap itself was soggy, which is gross. My main complaint is that the staff is lazy. Went in and there were no more than 10 customers, some eating, some ordering etc. With 4 staff members in the front of the house, there were at least 6 boxes that were waiting to be given to customers from the kitchen. The staff just dilly-dallied in the front as our boxes sat up there, waiting to be handed out to either seated patrons or those of us waiting. Finally, one of the "chefs" came out of the kitchen and distributed the boxes. To make things worse, I found a piece of sharp plastic in my wrap. I called and spoke with the manager who competently apologized and offered me a free wrap. I should have told him to fire all of his dumb lazy front house staff. Definitely not coming back.

Yum!! Could even wait to take a pic of my Ginger Palmetto wrap before I ate the whole thing! Salads and wraps galore and all quality and served quickly!

The food is wonderful, when they actually make your food with the correct ingredients. I don't take my food to-go when I visit. I think the staff is a group of pot-heads. I mainly get the same thing and not once has it ever been made the same. Substituting cheeses is almost constant, or they may not even put cheese on it. I asked for yogurt and received potato salad a couple of times. When I asked about the ingredients of their Potato Chowder I was told "Ummmm.... Potatoes...., oh! I think bacon too!" For having the word Vegan plastered on your menu, I figured your knowledge of your ingredients would be of great importance. This restaurant has great food, the consistency is way off. When I'm feeling I want a little excitement in my boring lunch routine I will visit Black Bean. Management needs to get their employees together!

Arrived at 9:40 to grab dinner. THEY CLOSE at 10 PM!! When I got there they had already locked their doors and were cleaning. I knocked on the door and pointed to my watch. They flashed back the "C" symbol and said they were closed and shrugged their shoulders and walked back into the kitchen. I had already spent over 5 minutes trying to find parking downtown and then walking to the entrance. I was with my brother and we had planned on having dinner there. It was really shocking to see how unconcerned they were about customer service. I will NEVER go back to this location again. I emailed the owner, Ellis Grossman, to give him this feedback and he never got back to me. It rains almost every single day in the summer in Chas. If Black Bean is going to shut down because it is raining then they might as well not have a King street location.

The Historic District of Charleston is filled with restaurants, but if you are looking for that simple, clean, veggie filled meal then Black Bean Co just can't be beat. It's not just salads and wraps, it's creative mixtures of food, fresh ingredients and reasonably priced! I wish there was one near me in Orlando.

Downtown and West Ashley locations are both good lunch destinations with friendly staff and a comfortable dine-in experience. Food can be hit or miss, though. The Mega Veggie wrap was dry and bland. The Super Asian wrap, however, is my new favorite thing. The tofu is flavorful and the dressing adds depth and moisture without being overwhelming. Worth going back for again, and again and again. The Green Spring Street is another good choice. I wish the sides got a little more love. The potato salad was uninspired and lacking any real sources of flavor. How about some fennel, chives, garlic, black pepper? Anything to make it more than just mayo and potatoes. Same goes for the couscous -- nothing to write home about. But the negatives are nitpicks, and I can't wait to explore this place's extensive menu more. End verdict: go, eat something good and feel good about it.

This place broke my little vegan heart. My husband and I were visiting Charleston and I researched restaurants before going. We were leaving early Sunday morning, so I was looking for a breakfast place that opened early but also had coffee and vegan options. I thought this place would be perfect! And then we walked in. The counter lady was surly. There was only one other customer inside and I think he was homeless. (Not a big deal, just wasn't expecting that.) I ordered a vegan tofu scramble wrap. The table we selected was filthy with crusted on food remnants. And then the worst part of the entire ordeal happened. My food came. It had not one, but TWO hairs on it. One small hair right on top of the wrap and one longer one tucked into the wrap a little. I tried to tell myself the hair must have fallen off my shirt, but that wouldn't have explained the one tucked into the wrap. Anyway, after I thorougly inspected the rest of my food (I should have just thrown it away, but I was hungry and I hate to waste money!) and deemed it hair-free, I had a hard time even choking down a few bites. It was awful. Weird spongy meatless patty with more weird ill-seasoned tofu and a handful of black beans and salsa inside the smallest flour tortilla I've ever seen served as a meal. Vegan food doesn't have to be awful. Really. (I had a great meal the night before at another local restaurant that went out of their way to make me a delicious, hair-free entree!) Anyway, you can bet I will never return here and will advise everyone I know to do the same. We visit Charleston a good bit and I was really excited to find a vegan-friendly restaurant, but this place is just gross.

We got to the black bean at 12:30 pm. Breakfast was only served until 11 am. My daughter has to eat gluten free and they were very happy to make her an ommlet. The rest of the family enjoyed our fresh and delicious wraps, salads, soup and smoothie. Great place. Friendly people and great atmosphere.

One of the best menus I have ever seen. First, the curry couscous with cranberries is incredible. Best couscous i have ever had. Second, the chicken roadside gyro is amazing. It's served with mango salsa, mixed greens, feta, and homemade tzaziki sauce...wham bam!! Elizabeth is the most awesome FOH!

More accurately I would give this place a 3.5 Went for Sunday brunch and had the duck confit biscuits and gravy with seasoned potatoes peppers and onions. 4.5/5 delicious. Had their espresso which was decent. Overall, I would come again, the biscuits, man...the biscuits.

Sadly, my friends and family love Black Bean. The service has always been quick and very friendly. The food has always been delish and a wonderful alternative to other fast food options. It wasn't until my card was charged multiple times (I did not authorize one of the charges) did I get to experience the poor business ethics that were being practiced. I tried to work with the management team to get the issue resolved. Finally, after a month I was in contact with the owner who also led me down to a dead end. I offered to meet, talk, whatever was needed to resolve the problem. All communication was via email and landed me right back where I began. Thankfully, my bank took care of the issue in 10 minutes where after a month the ownership got me nowhere. This poor business practice saddens me since the food and staff are so wonderful.

Though this place is tailored more toward delivery and catering it is still a very clean, caring and refreshing dining option. The space is tiny but you are always greeted with a smile. The gyro and couscous is amazing!!!! If you are a vegetarian and prefer organic meat and produce, this is the place for you. It is a little out of the way on Spring Street but worth the exercise to get there.

I just ordered a cobb salad with chicken to go. Got home and there's no chicken! I definitely paid for it. Basically lettuce variety with some turkey bacon for way too much money. No bueno. Check your order!

The sandwich was fresh and tasted great. The person at the counter was very helpful and patient as I was having trouble deciding. She recommend the yogurt and boy was that good. I actually went back to get a second portion of the yougurt :D If I ever visit Charleston again, I'll go out of my way for the yogurt.

Today I tried BBC for the first time as it seems to be a favorite among certain people I know and I love the concept behind BBC. Due to a sudden downpour downtown I also decided to have them deliver to my office and their arrival was on the money. Sadly, this probably the highlight of my experience as I called to ask about the menu and options before placing my order online and the woman I spoke to seemed relatively clueless even when I attempted to clarify what we were discussing--I walked away from this with the impression they primarily use their guacamole as a spread on wraps for some odd reason. This led to me changing my mind with regards to what I ordered. As for the food, it didn't really speak to me. The Hummus had this odd sweet tinge to it that I could not place and it did not fit and it was oddly bland. The Chicken salad wrap that I had was also missing something that I simply could not put my finger on. I think it was also a blandness issue. As someone who was semi-vegetarian (fish, dairy, and eggs with no red meat, pork, chicken, or any other animal protein) most of my life, I am extremely disappointed. There are better vegetarian or semi-vegetarian options available. Best part of this entire experience: not only do they deliver there was no delivery charge within the city and their website is relatively user friendly although it does not include their entire menu. -This review is based solely on my delivery experience and doesn't include a review of the physical location.

Eat in or take out, this is a great place for a tasty, fresh, healthy lunch. Their yogurt is out of this world. The wraps are huge. I can only eat half of one (of course this might be because I eat the yogurt first).

Let me begin by saying this is for the new location on King St. I have had many good meals at both the JI and Spring St locations, but the meal I had on Sunday was horrible. We called to order dinner and decided on delivery, which we were told would take 1 to 1.5hrs. 2 hrs go by and we finally call to see what the deal is, the girl on the phone says they are slammed but our order is out for delivery and she is sorry (she was very nice about it). When the food finally arrived, it was both cold and soggy and was by far the worst meal Ive ever had from Black Bean. So, 3 stars for the ridiculous wait and mediocre food. Still, like I said before, Ive had a lot of good meals at their other locations so Im hoping this was a one time deal that can be attributed to that being a new location. Both the girl on the phone and the delivery guy were very apologetic, they just need to sort out the issues in the kitchen.

I'm writing this review and am so torn- the menu looks amazing, but everything else beyond that falls short! The customer service was so slow, and the order taker was very unkempt and disorganized (also taking phone calls with a line of 10 to the door). The counter also has full view of the kitchen and wash area with mops and buckets... all of which made my stomach turn from the get go. I ordered 2 things with a special request on each (I'm vegetarian so one was to remove the meat)... pretty standard, she had been the one to recommend what would be good with the substitute. A long while later they brought me my to go order which was $19 for a cold wrap and a small side salad- oh well I was happy about the fresh ingredients and brought it all the way to my destination. When I opened the order, the ingredient I had paid extra for on the salad was missing, so I decide to try the wrap- after eating a bite I looked closely at a a chunk of chicken sticking out! Ugh, this was beyond frustrating to pay so much for 2 items, one of which I could not eat. I trekked all the way back to tell them I was over it and just wanted my money back. I left hungry but was appreciative they were willing to refund my card. The suggestion I have for this place is you've got a really great concept going, but you got lazy with hiring young kids that are all scrubby with nappy hair over my food- and the cleanliness and long waits are so unappealing... there's so much more you could do to make this a successful restaurant- I applaud the effort.

While the food may be good, I'll never find out. Quite possibly the worst customer service experience I've ever had. We placed a lunch order from the hospital. It took them two hours to bring our order and they happened to forget to bring mine entirely. After another hour, they called back to say my card had been declined (never mind the fact that I had been waiting for three hours for my food and maybe it should have been gratis?) after saying that other co workers cards were declined earlier despite all of us having money in our accounts. When we asked to speak to a manager, suddenly my card began working. I told them to cancel the order, but the charge is currently still on my account.

Drive-thru health food. Yes, please. They also offer dine-in, outdoor seating, to go, delivery and catering. It's not the most exciting menu in Charleston, but for a drive-thru (Savannah Hwy, next to IHOP)? Impressive. They serve bfast until 11, then their regular menu of salads, wraps and gyros. $6- 10. Lots of bev options, including smoothies. I once had to wait 4 minutes at the drive-thru, and they apologized "for the wait" and gave me a chocolate chip cookie. Love.

first review : Pretty darn good. And they deliver! The sides are inconsistant but the wraps are good. They use some sort of cubed up deli meat as their protiens and at first it can be a little off putting if you're expecting fresher meat but I have grown to like it. The dif kinds of tofu are what I normally go for anyway and they are great. Follow up- gross gross gross everything has changed

Black Bean Co is the best. I try to eat vegetarian when I can, and as always this can be a challenge when attempting to pick up something in a hurry. Fast food options are pretty much out of the question, and Black Bean Co always saves the day. The burritos are sooo good, and ready in minutes! The one downtown even delivers if you don't have time to run over and pick it up. If you want to compare it to Dell'z, as some other Yelpers have, I have to say that it is much faster and has better hours. I've waited 20 minutes before for a wrap from Dell'z, and felt a little awkward sitting there with a few other people in the cramped tiny dining/waiting area... or um, nook I guess? Dell'z does not deliver and I think prices are about the same. So, it's just a matter of how quick you want your food I suppose!

Outstanding Service , delicious fresh salads and super healthy wraps . Great pick me up after a long day of shopping. The Manager was super friendly and the prices were extremely reasonable for fresh healthy food

Food, good. Service, horrible. Love the West Ashley location, probably won't be back to King Street.

Popped into Black Bean for both breakfast and lunch during a weekend getaway. We went to the King Street location. Lunch was delicious; we both got veggie wraps. Breakfast was meh, we ordered homemade oatmeal. Plenty of flavor but super gummy. Fruit salad sub-par. Friendly staff and a good amount of seating make this place a good resting spot, especially for people like me who are mostly vegetarian.

Fast casual. That's what it is, but it's better than that. Good, healthy, but hearty? A little Asheville a stone throw away from some of the most aristocratic place in the country? Check this out.

Ordered the black & blue wrap and the beet salad over the phone, the guy who took my order was efficient but still very nice and offered good suggestions. Both items are fresh and Delicious with a capital D!!!

I actually visted the one on Folly Road, but there wasn't an option to review that one so I chose the next best thing :) This place is great for both healthy/non-healthy eaters alike. So many delicious options to choose from, it was really hard but I ended up with a Pesto Chicken flatbread (that I actually had them make into a wrap). It was very filling and less than $10! They also served water with cucumber and lime in it and it was very refreshing. I am from MD and would love to have a place like that around here, maybe I can open a franchise! I would love it!!

I hate to be a hater. Check my reviews. But I always leave BBC thinking "I could have made that better, cheaper." My last experience there was a very underwhelming pricey cup of Tom Yum ('inspired'..we'll call it) soup. I left hungry. BBC doesn't need my love, they're doing just fine and have plenty of fans. I'm just not feeling it.

I know so many people adore this place (any of the locations) but frankly, I'm a little underwhelmed. We gave it a fair shot, honest. Multiple visits to the (old ) downtown (on Spring St, not the new location on King) and to the James Island BBC. The food gets marks for being fresh, and some of it is supposedly from local farmers, and there are multiple vegerarian/vegan options (plus I like the clocks on the wall at JI). Otherwise, it would be a solid 2 in my book, or rather to my taste buds. I found the preparations to be uniformly lacking in seasonings, spices, and herbs. Everything we've tried (except the Bell's beer we got in bottles) has been really bland. Vegetarian doesn't mean boring. The food that comes from my kitchen is alive with flavor. As folks who are pretty much pescitarian, we were initially excited that a vegetarian friendly restaurant was maybe 5 minutes from our home. However, to be honest, we regularly bypass it now to seek out chefs who also use fresh foods, but aren't afraid to enhance with seasonings, herbs, and spices. It makes all the difference for this reviewer's palate. PS Last time we ate there was earlier this year. If things have drastically changed, message me, and we'll try it again. If it's changed, I'll update my review.

Great healthy food, lots of veggie/vegan options... You walk away pretty stuffed for less than 10 bucks, in my book - that's a win!!

BLACK BEAN CO. . .WAKE UP. I don' t know what has happened to you, but you're no longer the same Black Bean Co. I fell in love with. I've ordered from you TWICE (once downtown and once on JI) in the last three weeks, thinking that the first disaster was a fluke. . .now I realize, I was wrong. My wrap arrived from the downtown location a barely filled mess. The turkey was kind of. . .slimy and the veggies (what little greens it came with) were wilty. I was JUST about to eat when I opened my couscous container and a FRUIT FLY flew out of it. So disgusted, that I couldn't eat. But surely. . .surely. . .this was just an off day. Everyone has them right? Hmmm. . .well, if so, I just *happened* to hit the James Island BBC on a Sunday morning to have breakfast with my father. I ordered vegan pancakes, he ordered the Tuscan Wrap. I couldn't freaking believe what they brought out to our table. I had one lopsided pancake the size of a small child's hand with an even smaller (we're talking QUARTER SIZED) pancake-like-crumb flopped on top of it. The filling of my father's wrap was so meager, that his breakfast consisted mainly of mouthfuls of dry wrap occasionally interrupted by some egg. His side of turkey bacon came out in CRUMBLES in a dressing cup. Seriously. It was so horrible, yet so hilarious, we didn't know what to do. The coffee, thankfully, was still delicious and prevented an all out assault. I am so bummed out about this. I don't know if the owners and management are spreading themselves to thin or if they're trying to save money or if the staff isn't feeling invested or what. But there are PROBLEMS there. The food and service is vastly different from the four or five star rating I would've given it based on its original performance. I really want to see Black Bean succeed and I do hope that it's management sees some of these reviews and makes the necessary adjustments to keep it's loyal customers returning and to make new ones. I would had to see it go away. I'll give it one more try between now and a few weeks from now. . but if it hasn't improved, I don't know if I'll be able to stomach the disappointment. UPDATE: And there you have it, folks. The end of a love affair. I LOVED Black Bean Company when they first opened on Spring Street; I was delirious with joy when they opened on James Island. I do not know or understand the how or why of this once great restaurant's demise, but in my visits subsequent to this review, I've been terribly disappointed. The once attentive, competent staff appears to no longer care about ANYTHING (presentation, taste or service) and the food has gone downhill. I would absolutely NOT CARE about portion sizes. . .if the food were as good as it used to be. I was ok with paying premium prices for premium ingredients. But now, I'm paying premium prices for bottom of the barrel ingredients in miniscule portions. Ugh. It's just. . .so sad. I had high hopes for this concept.

I had heard great things about Black Bean so I decided to order a healthy lunch online from their new King Street location. My order arrived within an hour and the online order form was user-friendly. I ordered a salad and added chicken. Either the lettuce was old or it was bruised from packing so many ingredients into the container. I appreciated the size of the salad but it was all smushed. The chicken was also very salty and I am usually am one to over-salt. The salty chicken + feta + olives + soy dressing was too sodium laden for me to handle so I threw the salad out after about 5 bites. I want to like Black Bean so I will try again. Maybe these were just kinks from opening a new location.

After my order today I felt compelled to write a review, which I have never done. Unfortunately, this isn't a favorable one. I have given this King street location many chances in hopes that they will get their act together, only to be let down every time. Nine times out of ten I order from this location when I need something delivered (this is their ONLY advantage over Dellz). Today, a 4:00 order didn't arrive until 5:30. When I called at 5:15, the girl who answered the phone was rude. I'm pretty sure she is the one I have dealt with before, and she is always rude. No smiles, unapologetic when the order was forgotten to put in....which makes everything worse. I don't seem to have issues when I go to the James island location, which is why I keep going back. Their food isn't terrible, it's semi-healthy and there are many options. However, the consistent poor customer service is more than enough reason for me to put this restaurant on my "ban list." Such a shame....

You want great healthy food? Go to Black Bean. You want lousy service, mistakes in your order, and generally to deal with incompetent clueless people? Go to Black Bean.

Its been some months since my trip down to Dixie (I'm corny, I know) but Black Bean Co was some of the best food I had there, without a doubt. Kept it simple with one of the many veggie burrito options, and it was so light and fresh and tasty that it made me want to go back. The young lady we placed our orders through was also quite pleasant, though she didn't tell me my burrito would have as much rice as it did, but as stated before it was really good. No offense, but I didn't think I could find such a place down in Charleston, but here it is - not far from the college area, a bit in the hood, and oh so good.

I've always loved this place for a quick sandwich or salad on the health food dessert that is James Island, but I never went totally gaga over the menu. However, today I stopped in for breakfast, and everything changed. Not only is their coffee excellent but the vegan oatmeal tastes like apple cobbler. It's incredible. The service was also wonderful.

Always in search of healthy, good tasting food while traveling for work. Charleston has abundant restaurant options but this is one of my favorites and stands out because the prices are really reasonable. I had the southwest chicken wrap tonight... It was delicious.

WAS really looking forward to an experience here. But we arrived at 9:30pm on Sat., close at 10:00, and were barely greeted with a smile. I asked to make sure they were open till 10 and proceeded to order while she spun her necklace around as my friend decided what to order. Couldn't believe our food arrived in to-go containers. We asked about eating in and she said, "well...we are open for a few more minutes". It was 9:40. Not welcoming or accommodating. Too bad. Thank goodness the food is good because the service was not.

We've been here twice for dinner, both times ordering food and a smoothie. The first time, we got our food, and had to ask again for the smoothie, which came out about five minutes later. Went again tonight, again ordered food and a smoothie. They brought out our food, and we had to remind them of the smoothie. Ten minutes later we asked another employee, who whined that the morning crew hadn't prepped the smoothies doe them. Finished our food, and still no smoothie. Throught the meal we could hear the blender being used, just not for us. After finishing all of our food, we went to the register to ask for a refund on the smoothie that apparently nobody wanted to bother making. The two girls behind the counter rolled their eyes, told us they had a new blender that they didn't know how to use, took the receipt and just walked off. Another employee had to come up, demand our receipt, and eventually gave us a refund for the food they had never made for us. Her body language made it quite obvious that we were being a horrible inconvenience, though she did manage to spit out a very insincere "sorry." The food is very good, if the staff feels like rewarding you with your order. It's not quite good enough to make up for the staff's offensive rudeness. The decor is just tacky as hell, with five flat screens playing non-stop infomercials and ads for other local businesses.

The food was good but if the service is bad, it ruins everything. Our waitress was rude, she didn't care to clean our table when we sat down, and I had to walk almost to the kitchen to pay my bill (I am sure she wouldn't have noticed if I would've walked out). She even gave me the wrong bill and showed me attitude when I wanted the correct bill. Probably not going there again..

My new favorite place to order from for a quick, tasty, good-for-you dinner. You can order on-line! Pay with a credit card! They deliver! (They even once found, without extensive up-to-the-minute real time directions, our very hard to find apartment! That has never happened before. Ever.) And everything that I have tried off of the menu has been delicious. I'm particularly fond of the strawberry fields salad and also love the baja wrap with chicken (so does, I discovered, my dog, who last night seized the opportunity to steal half of it when I looked away for one brief, sad, second). Last time something we ordered came with a delicious little side of yogurt topped with pistachios and dried fruit. That was yummy, too. Never been to the store front, so can't speak to the dining-in experience. But as a to go joint, definitely a winner.

I liked this place a lot. There are a lot of healthy choices and a nice variety of options that you don't find most other places. My friends and I got breakfast foods and were very happy with our entrees and sides. I wish I lived closer, because I would definitely come here regularly.

Very good food. Reasonably priced. Tiny restaurant, however, with just a few tables. Better for take outs unless you have a 2 person party (which we did not, we were 4). Their side salads were very tasty as well. Worth returning to!

Hm. I can't really decide what I think about this place. On one hand, its extremely easy and convenient to order from here, and it's pretty quick. However, I can't help but compare this place to Dellz and have to say that it doesn't really come close. The food here is often underseasoned and looks better on paper than it actually is. That being said, I don't dislike it enough to not order from there when I need a place to deliver to me (no delivery fees!) at work, or to occasionally stop by on my way home from work despite the fact that nothing on their menu has "wow"ed me so far. ----------------------- UPDATE! (02/25/2011) OKOKOK. Black Bean Co., I'm ready to confess. I have slowly but surely fallen in love with you. At first I thought you were kind of lame, but now your cheap and delicious Gyros and Vegan wraps (especially the Spinach Love and Green Beach Burrito) have begun to win me over. Thanks to the fact that this place is one of the few places that delivers healthy food (and DOESNT require a $15-20 order minimum), I have given in and am now kind of really into it. To anyone not impressed with Black Bean Co, don't worry. I felt the same way at first. However, there is a pretty good chance it will grow on you like it did with me. ---------------------- Update, part 2 (9/7/2013) Welp, I find myself here again, renegotiating with myself on what I will from now lovingly refer to as the Black Bean Emotional War of the 21st Century. I am out of the loving semi-obsession I had with Black Bean after I stopped working jobs that required ordering take-out for dinner and far before they started opening locations all over the place. Now I can't help but roll my eyes a little bit every time I walk past Black Bean Co because honestly, I am not sure that I think it's worth the hype. I can totally just make myself an identical wrap at home for a portion of the cost! I am flip flopping so much that not only is it very likely that Black Bean is my frenemy that I am currently on the outs with, but that it probably just deserves a smack-in-the-middle, meh review rating. No more of this review updating madness, I promise!

I really want to like this place because I'm a vegetarian and love restaurants with lots of veggie options. Kudos to this place for putting an emphasis on healthy food full of fresh veggies. The staff is friendly and the restaurant is clean with a good variety on the menu. However, I've been here 3 times, every time expecting a better experience, and every time I'm disappointed with bland, dry food, and a meager portion size all for a fairly expensive lunch bill. If you want an awesome wrap for the same price, venture over to Dellz in downtown.

I wish this company would expand to the DMV! I went here twice during a 3 day vacation and it was REALLY REALLY good and filling. I got the Southwestern wrap with tofu and both times it was really good. The first time the wrap was made with a tomato basil wrap which really set it off. The second time I had the exact same wrap, but this time they used a spinach wrap, which wasn't quite as good as the tomato basil. But this fact will certainly not stop me from visiting again in the future.

We were really looking forward to our visit to Black Bean, but it was not what we expected. Hoping that the healthy vibrant menu would reflect the staff, we were disillusioned to say the least. Here is what happened: We were served by an unenthusiastic girl who took our simple order of one strawberry/banana smoothie, and one mango smoothie. Simple right?? (please take note at that stage there were 3 staff, and only 2 other customers who had already been served in the place) We waited 10 minutes for the first smoothie to appear. It was raspberry...not strawberry like I ordered, but I didn't want to kick up a fuss. It was such a weird texture no straw could could be used as it was like glue. The other smoothie never came. When my boyfriend went to ask about it, he was given no apologies.....they had no idea what flavor. The guy walked away and brought some mangoes back, and then said "well this will take a while for the mango one if you want to wait, or you can just have one of these strawberry ones already made in the fridge?" As we were wanting to get out of there, he took the strawberry one (which was average)...and we left....never to return. Learn some customer service, and don't leave people waiting so long. It's really not that hard to smile, or make a smoothie.

The food was fresh and tasty--but the best was the gyros sandwich with seitan (I believe). The yogurt sauce for that was perfect!

My family and I are trying to eat healthier. We took a shot at this place tonight. It was so bad that I had to leave a comment somewhere where the owners would possibly read it. There is no where to contact anyone from their website. Wonder why??? My husband ordered a grilled chicken wrap and instead cold cuts were in it. The maui tacos had I think an ounce of fish but, the condiments were so over powering that we could not enjoy the beautiful fish. The rice and beans were literally steamed and put on a plate and had not even salt and pepper or any kind of dressing. The taco shells are not homemade. The tea was commercial tea and not fresh brewed tea and the turkey club wrap also had cold cuts and not real turkey which the menu says it has. Overall very disappointing. the place was clean and the counterperson was accommodating I think they just wanted us out of there. This place has potential the owners should take more pride in their product and it could be successful. On top of that we paid 55$ for this. Local products I don't think so...very doubtful with the product being given out.

This is my favorite place to eat on James Island. Fresh, fast and a tasty menu (I've tasted most of it all) make this place all that it is. The employees are friendly and engaging, always determined to make sure their food exceeds expectations.

New location on Folly Road. Excellent taste and fast friendly advice. Lots of choices and they will work with you on your own combination. I had Green Beach Burrito and the ingredients were fresh which enhanced the taste. So much better than a burger or chicken slider. I chose the yoghurt side which was delicious and was obviously not off the shelf. I also liked how they promote the local community in their store, ads of local events, local artist displayed, etc. And I like their T-shirts with the catchy slogan. I will go back. Note that the entire concept pushes them way above the fast food track and therefore doesn't deem itself an alternative to fast food, but rather a matter of a healthy choice.

I love this place. The food is wonderful and fresh. My personal favorite is the international wrap and the yogurt parfait side. I have never had a bad meal. You will pay a bit more, but you know that you are getting healthier options, that are super tasty and local when ever possible. I love that there is a drive through. Now you know you can have healthy items on the run.

I tried Black Bean Co., for the first time, a few weeks ago. I've eaten there at least once a week ever since. It's my new favorite wrap place in Charleston. The International wrap is my favorite. The yogurt with the home made granola is amazing--I usually pay extra for the larger size cause I just can't get enough. And, to top off the great food, they deliver!
