The Barbados Room was a disappointment to say the least. It was very hot and still in the dining room, and the food was marginal at best. Our server was not terrible, but offered nothing remarkable, or exceptional. The crab cakes were mushy and full of mayonnaise, and the salad lacked flavor. This place is outdated and in serious need of a make-over!

Sunday afternoon, stopped in for drinks, and a snack. Bartender was wonderful. Been there over 20 years. Manager gave me sample of really nice Tequila. The order came late, so they discounted it. Spoke to a very nice supervisor from Iran, could have talked with him for hours. Nice place, quite, nice outdoor seating. If you want to relax with no pressures, this is the pace. The prices are also very reasonable. Frank G

My first visit since the mills house was bought out by Wyndham. I read the Barbados Room had been up fitted and the menu was changed. I enjoyed my lunch visit. The curry chicken salad was delicious and the visual presentation was lovely. I will return to try other things on the menu.

This place has so much potential, but the couple of times I've been here I never walk away impressed. The restaurant and outdoor patio are beautiful, they have great drink, and the food is just alright. My last visit here, I got a the she crab soup (delicious and priced reasonably) and the sweet bay salad. What I got on my plate was a small stack of lettuce that looked good, tasted good, but definitely wasn't worth the $11 I paid since I left hungry. Plus the service is always bad!!! My soup came out before my drink, which I had to ask for, and the salad took way to long in the kitchen. As much as I want this place to be a go to whenever I'm in town, I don't think I'll ever come back here. There are too many other great places in Charleston, that if you were to come here you would be wasting your time.

the hostess is so rude, and the hours for breakfast are weird. Wouldn't go here.

Our tour guide, who is a lifelong resident, recommended this for a lunch spot and we were thrilled. The outdoor dining area was inviting and clean. The wait staff were professional and friendly. The lunch menu had quite a few tempting items. We enjoyed the she crab soup with sherry on top. The shrimp and grits were a little pricy but had a nice flavor and was a good sized portion. The curry chicken salad was artfully arranged. It was delicious and refreshing. I wish I had room to try the turkey and brie. We will definitely be back on our next trip.

This is a cool bar in the historic Mills House Hotel. 3.5 stars. We've stopped in a number of times late night after a dinner or a play and enjoyed it. No beer on tap and the service has been so-so each time we've been there, so I couldn't give it 4 stars. Still worth a stop in and we'll probably be back since it's a great late night stop in for us.

Worst service ever....unprofessional staff and management. Lack of training in the industry is apparent.

Charlestonians Beware!!! This is not your Holiday Inn ran Mills House and Barbados Room any longer. I literally just returned from the worst gouging of my life at the Mother's Day brunch. Don't be fooled, this isn't the same weekly Sunday brunch that made Mills House the not so secret best Sunday brunch location in a crowded group of competition. This is Wyndham extracting every single dollar they can out of those who enjoy an upscale, gourmet buffet style meal. The Details: I'll start with the reservation. I called before Easter as I know in the past, getting a seating at the first (formerly 11:30 and now 11:00) seating time can be difficult. I was told then to wait until after Easter as they couldn't handle/take my reservation. This was an imminent sign of things to come both with the reservation and with the entire experience. I called back at the end of April to ensure that I got a table and literally felt as if I was calling tech support at Dell, etc. I have worked for multi-national companies for years so I feel fairly adept at speaking to those who English is not their first nor primary language. This gentlemen was the worst experience I've ever had. To spite the incredible language barrier, I was able to secure a 6 person table at 11. At this point, I was asked for a credit card to secure the reservation. Red flag number 2. While I have no problem giving a credit card to a restaurant such as Grill 225 due to the steaks they are removing from their aging cellar, this shocked me. It was explained that because they had staffed up and prepared extra food for a tour bus load sized group and they no showed some time back, they could no longer accept reservations without something to hold it against. One of the last 2-3 times (and post Wyndham) we were there, a massive group of tourist (complete with name badges) had piled in and ruined the experience for us. My first thought was to stop allowing large groups (15+) to come in for the brunch. Problem solved....but I digress. I haven't been to the Sunday brunch since August '13 despite living in Charleston. During that time, I know they performed construction and renovation on the Barbados Room area and the restaurant was nearly completely closed during that time. The Food: Once I entered the food corridor I saw some wonderful improvements! Instead of one lady manning two omelet stations, there were two younger and energetic cooks manning three omelet stations! Joy! I always start with a fresh, made to order omelet at MH! At this stage my only disappointment was seeing there was no shrimp gravy to make shrimp and grits. In the past, that was a highlight seeing how some Charleston restaurants would charge the same price for a plate of S&G as Mills House Sunday brunch cost all together! Ok ok, I sound picky already and I'm only half way through the line! Carving station with prime rib, salmon fillets, numerous sides, etc. The same as it always was in my mind. Shrimp on ice (tail only instead of total peel & eat, I considered this a win for my cleanliness), small crab claws ( a new addition, win), additional cheeses, and a supple vegetable/salad table. I will summarize the food as this: both myself and anyone else at the table had not a single bad thing to say about any of the food. It was all wonderful. The deserts were very very hit and miss and that was a letdown (especially the omission of the best Key Lime in Charleston!). The end of meal debacle: Being as I've been going to the Mills House for brunch since it was $16.95 per person, I've swallowed and understood the price increases over the years. I still knew I was getting amazing food that any one entree made worth the price even as it had climbed to $29.95 per person. Then the biggest slap in the face of all hit the table. $384.21 for 6 people. As my jaw lay on the floor, my quick math said holy s$%@, that's $60+ pp without tip! At this point we were committed and paid the check. The mediocre service was rewarded with the server automatically filling in my CC receipt to an 18% gratuity!!! Never have I ever had a server write in the gratuity like this! On my way out, someone who appeared to be a manager was standing with the two hostesses. I proceeded to politely, discretely, and inquisitively ask if this was now the normal price of the brunch buffet as we had not been in several months. I was told this was the "special" holiday price (they meant gouging) for the brunch buffet. He went on to break my heart by saying they will no longer offer the brunch weekly and only on Holidays (read again, when they can gouge). Remember how I said the food was good overall? NONE of it nor combined was it worth $150 for my wife and I. My heart is broken and I squarely place the blame on the Wyndham organization. Any hotel chain that owns the likes oof HOJO, Days Inn, Super 8, and Ramada has NO BUSINESS owning a storied and elegant hotel such as the Mills House!

For a hotel bar it's not bad. Too bad this was too much of a work trip to enjoy that a bit more. It's a full bar, but bottles only. So, no beer on draft. Excuse me??? I know I have faced some tougher trials in my life, but this was definitely a bigger disappointment than I was ready to deal with when it came up. Luckily the bartender was a pro and fixed me a martini stat before the tears started rolling. For a restaurant, I didn't fully experience it as I needed a quick breakfast before work. That quick breakfast turned into a 20-30 minute wait for fruit and cottage cheese. Maybe no one ever orders it and they had to run to the store. I enjoyed this on the patio. Oh yes, the patio, the interior is nice and spacious, but you'd be a fool to choose it over the patio unless it's completely sweltering. It's absolutely lovely. They were bordering on two and a half stars, but the patio truly is tremendous with the fountain. It's fun to feel fancy and sip a martini next to the fountain and enjoy the night breeze. Next time I'll probably just pre-funk at the other bars in Charleston and hang out with my nightcap on that fab patio for a bit before bed.

Disclaimer: I did not try any of the food. Okay, here is the story. It was my honeymoon. Our flight had been cancelled the day before and we were stuck overnight in Rosemont, Illinois. I know right? Finally make it to Charleston, sans luggage which was somewhere in New York (???). I, at this point, am a complete wreck, all I want to do is curl up in bed with the new hubby, but SURPRISE! our room wasn't ready. What else is there to do but hit the bar? SO we walk in to the cool, British Colonial style bar. There are big palm shaped fans swirling lazily overhead. Comfy looking animal print chairs, and a deliciously long bar. The bartender took one look at us, and decided we needed a new best friend for the day. We had the place mostly to ourselves. So I sipped on French 75s while my hubby hit the whiskey and Palmetto Amber. The bartender (I really wish I could remember his name) told us stories to make the time pass and lighten our mood. By the time our room was ready and our luggage had arrived, we were delightfully drunk and in much better spirits. Southern hospitality won us over. We went back after an amazing dinner and enjoyed a couple more cocktails in the courtyard. It was fragrant with blooming flowers and hushed with the fountain. People came and went. We took in every moment of it. It was a pretty great first honeymoon day.

We had dinner here during Restaurant Week, and were not impressed, despite the restaurant being in the charming Mills House hotel. My swordfish came out grossly overcooked, although when the kitchen recooked it, it came out very moist and well seasoned. Unfortunately, our simple 3-course dinner for two took a full 2 hours to endure, despite the restaurant not being busy. What's more, every time the server came to our table, she gave me a "friendly" touch on the shoulder, which I let slide a couple times, but finally I had to say firmly please do not touch the customers, it's not appropriate, especially every time you come by.

We went to the Barbadoes Room for lunch the other day, and you can definitely find much better on the Charleston dining scene. The food was okay ... I found some pieces of shell in my she-crab soup, which was rather unappetizing. The monte cristo sandwich was pretty good; I especially liked their raspberry dipping sauce, which had a lot of flavor to it. My iced tea was served to me with a hair in it (ew!) and the coffee tasted burnt. Our servers were pretty friendly. Note that I said servers, plural. There were two women waiting on us the entire time, and neither ever seemed to know what the other was doing, which meant that we would have to answer the same questions twice over. At one point, one of my dining companions asked one of the servers what type of sauce was served on one of the dishes (she's lactose intolerant and needed something that isn't cream-based), to which the girl responded, "I honestly have no clue." Well that was helpful. A moment later (I suppose after realizing how lame her reply sounded), she added on, "I think it's kind of like a tartar sauce." All in all, definitely more money than it's worth. You can do much better.

I read in Frommers that this was the "best Sunday brunch" in Charleston. Well, I hope not! Or they are in trouble. The restaurant is located in the Mills House Hotel. The food selection was limited for $25 per person. No crab cakes as advertised. The food was ok but nothing great--I should have expected that from a buffet. The service was very poor. And we were seated by the kitchen so waiters and waitresses were going past us and knocking the table constantly. This was probably the second worst food experience we had in Charleston during our 4 day stay and we definitely would not return. I would not recommend and would caution that there are better deals and better ways to spend $60 on food for one meal in Charleston.

I have no idea what the food is like here, but this is a shout-out to Josh the Bartender. I had just flown in on a red-eye and needed a beer and a water. Josh the friendly and talented bartender had me try his entry for the Tanqueray GQ competition involving cilantro, champagne and a splash of grapefruit. DELICIOUS and incredibly refreshing. Thanks Josh, I hope you won!
