This place is the best. Indoor and outdoor seating--and plenty of it! The frozen mint lemonade, as you can see by the reviews, is killer. Food is typical coffee food for the most part, though I haven't indulged much past some coffee cake. The only reason that I am only giving it four stars is because it is ridiculously expensive which me no likey very much. But still awesome sauce!

I fell in love with this place. I found this place by chance whiling waiting to be seated at Pearlz Oysters, just across the street. I tried their frozen lemonade with mint and it was so REFRESHING! Kind of resembles a non alcoholic mojito, which is my favorite. It definitely helped quench my thirst in the hot summer weather. Only drawback was that it closes fairly early, at 7PM, for a dessert place.

I know it's human nature to step into a coffee shop looking for something to nourish his/her body when feeling weary. However, if a coffee shop can't figure out what a genuine cup of "Americano" is supposed to taste like, this place won't get my repeated businesses...period! Daddy J. had a very disappointing cup of Americano. Although I'm no longer an avid black coffee drinker because of my ongoing migraine, the Americano here was merely a cup of caffeinated H2O. The iced chai latte was, on the other hand, great for someone who wanted some kind of "pick-me-up" without consuming a entire piece of tiramisu. I was quite enjoying the beverage until I found that there was an enormous amount of ice in the cup! For $4, it was almost criminal to consider this as a "rip-off." I rendered three (3) stars alone for the inviting decors, comfy seating, and sufficient air-conditioning. The baristas may want to take a "coffee-brewing" tour in Chicago to brush up their skills, just saying.

Super cute coffee shop. Their coffee is organic yet not too bitter, and all their baked goods are amazing. The coconut chocolate macaroon is one of the best I've ever had. They also have a craft beer selection that has options for most tastes. The sitting area annex is my favorite thing about this place. There are leather chairs and a big bookshelf, and it just makes you feel so comfy as you read a book and enjoy your coffee. The really only bad thing about this place is its location. Being situated on east bay, it's generally very busy with tourists and far away from the quieter, more local crowds.

Came in recently for a meeting and stayed long enough to try some snacks. Actually, I was ordering my coffee and couldn't help myself from ordering something from the case. I was a half hour early so I figured I'd get some work done on my laptop and jump on a conference call while I waited. I grabbed an iced latte and slice of Raspberry Lemon Cheesecake to share with my intern when she arrived. The thing is, I jumped on the call, fork in hand and decided to give it a taste. Next thing I knew, my intern was waking in to meet me and I had about two bites of cheesecake left... oops. Since I ate all the delicious cheesecake, she ordered a slice of quiche and it was excellent. Plus, I also realized they serve craft beer now as well. I'm officially a fan.

When I walked in, I wasn't blown away by the layout, but I thought we would give is a shot as it was recommended on a Charleston website. I ordered the key lime pie and some iced tea. The key lime was delicious and had walnuts in the graham cracker crust which was brilliant. There's plenty of space to sit and chill, but no public restrooms. Staff is friendly, too. I will compare all key lines lime pies to this going forward.

Frozen Mint Lemonade! That is all you need! Their frozen coffees are also tasty! The perfect place to grab a coffee, lemonade, or smoothie to cool off!

This is a cool little coffee shop with a library/reading room! Lots of sunlight coming through. I wish I tried their bakery items, but we were heading to brunch so just had some espresso over ice. It was good, but not the best I've had. Definitely enjoyed the ambiance and interior design than the drink.

On February 8, 2015 at approximately 1400 hours I, Dante G., responded to the Bakehouse Charleston located at 160 East Bay Street, which is in the city of Charleston, in reference to a snack. Upon arrival, I entered the business through the door located on the A-side of the building. I moved to the counter that is located along the interior C-D Corner. I ordered a Cinnamon Bun Latte and a piece of Key Lime Pie. I consumed them outside at a small sidewalk table. The Key Lime Pie was pretty good. Sadly, I have an unrefined palate. It tasted like every other Key Lime Pie I have ever had. The latte, however, tasted just like a cinnamon bun. Bonus points for me being able to drink it immediately and not having to add an ice cube or what for it to cool down from lava status. I love sitting outside and watching people while I drink coffee. Place gets points for that. End of Report.

What a cool little coffee place on East Bay St. Hip & full of people reading papers or on the Internet. Good coffee & great paste ties of course. I would definitely return here & I am a coffee snob. Another great find

Get the frozen mint lemonade! So refreshing! We tried a variety of their sweets and all were delicious. My favorite was the crackle cookie.

Aaahhhhh!!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!!! Bakehouse! - It's the very best little bakery and coffee shop in all of Charleston. Its usually a once a week stop in for me since I work up the street from it. But the truffle cake balls are out of this world and their red velvet whoopee pies are the best across the land! I bring all of my friends and visitors here so they too can experience the wonderful goodness of Bakehouse.

All I have to say is "smores bar"....if you are in any way remotely a fan of smores, you must get this! It is delicious! The atmosphere of the place is cool as well! Good little find and perfect for a sweet tooth!

My lovely bride and I had cappuccinos in generous ceramic cups on an early Saturday morning. The espresso-based drinks are fantastic. And so are the salted dark-chocolate brownies! It's a pleasantly sunny location with plenty of interesting folks walking along East Bay Street. Highly recommended.

FRUIT AND NUT BARZ. Oats, peanut butter, figs, dates, walnuts, cranberries, pumpkin seeds... Super delicious. These go down great with a beer. ;)

Cute little shop around the corner from where we were staying in Charleston. Staff was very friendly. The smoothies we got were delicious as well as the homemade granola bars - they were huge and 2 in a bag, enough for my husband and I to share with our smoothies. Would definitely come back again if we're in Charleston!

It was likely not the owner. We arrived at 8 and the opened about 5 minutes late. No problem. Two runners from Tennessee chatted with us at the clean outside tables. When they opened we moved up to the counter still chatting. The runners order and we were next. We moved up as a young girl got in line behind us. As we were ending the conversation one girl behind the counter glared at my wife and with attitude interrupted the conversation so to get the order and help the girl behind us. We yielded to the young girl and left. Seemed like a nice place. Not so nice staff.

I stopped in for a quick breakfast before our tour and glad that i did. I tried the biscuit sandwich and coffee cake which were good. The place is really cute inside with booth seating and a library to sit as you eat breakfast.

This place needs to take down all their offensive signs. They have ONE bathroom with a sign that read "Customers only. We are watching you". How creepy is that! Then the door next to it reads, "Employees only" and has a life size poster of a Halloween skeleton on it that scared my kids. I hope behind that door isn't a 2nd bathroom that the staff of 3 use for themselves. Another sign read, "thanks for busing your own table". At least that sign was nicer, but all this put me off going back there again. The staff behind the counter were chatting amongst themselves while I, the only customer, stood looking at their menu board and they never said hi or asked if they could help me. They had great coffee, but not a very welcoming atmosphere. Too much competition in coffee houses in that town, won't go back.

Much to the dismay of my personal trainer, I stop here at least once each week for an amazing breakfast. Can't help it; the homemade biscuit with sausage, egg and cheddar cheese is the biggest, fluffiest, flavor-packed start to your day around...that, and I'm snared each time by the awesome smell as I walk past to get to my office directly across the street! They usually offer two varieties of biscuit, plain and sweet potato. I've not tried the sweet potato, but I do see people ordering them while I wait for mine. I might be inclined to order one if they still offered butter and jelly, a nice touch they used to feature. A variety of coffee and tea drinks are available, and pastries as well as a quiche of the day sold by the slice. This little shop is worth a drop in if you're on East Bay Street in the French Quarter. Staff are always courteous and ready to serve you up.

Awesome little coffee shop (although we didn't try their coffee, so I can't comment on that). We both ordered a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit. I got a frozen mint lemonade and my husband had a frozen orange juice. We weren't expecting it, but that was the best breakfast sandwich we've had in a long time. If not ever! My frozen mint lemonade was really refreshing, and was perfect for a hot spring day. I will definitely try to remake that on my own this summer! Worth a stop if you're walking by!

A friend and I stumbled on this place after a workout in the park and have definitely gone back more than once! The ambience is very modern and clean. The tables are definitely great for setting up your laptop for a while (as long as you have a current drink and food) or sitting down for coffee with a friend or small group. Their coffee and baked goods are delicious, and they have a good selection of tasty baked goods and light breakfast options (oatmeal, quiche, muffins, breakfast sandwiches). It can get crowded as it on East Bay, but during the weekday mornings it does not seem so bad. I am definitely curious to sample their more elaborate baked goods-- namely their cakes and other catered goodies-- and they also have a Library that can apparently be reserved for small meetings, which I would be interesting to see about. Definitely a cute place to pop in on your visit or if you're a local during the week.

Nice bakery and coffee shop. They also sell beer which is a plus. Just stopped off for a coffee and a baked snack of a salted brownie. Brownie looked good as did all the other baked treats. There are plenty of places to sit and a side room...though I wasn't a fan of the dude studying and hogging the entire huge table with all his books laid out...who then glared at us when we took a corner of it. Yeah, I'm talking to you buddy...study in your room, not a coffee shop.

Pumpkin for days! Love their seasonal selection of pumpkin goodies - make sure to get the pumpkin bread and cheesecake (you can never have enough pumpkin anything). Even without pumpkin everything, this is a great coffee and bake shop in downtown Charleston. For all of you non milk lovers, it's also one of the few spots that have almond milk.

Love this place! I try to visit at least once every time I visit Charleston. The coffee is great, the food is excellent, the staff is beyond friendly, and the place is always clean and well taken care of. Definitely a recommended must for all those in Charleston.

Quick, cheap, easy, yummy food! Stopped in here on a Saturday morning and didn't have to deal with a line or anything. Staff was friendly and my cinnamon roll and frozen strawberry lemonade both totally hit the spot. Great location, easy to pop in for a cool beverage after taking in the waterfront or shopping in this crazy humidity and heat!

Nice coffeehouse we found on our walk downtown. I ordered the apple pie chai latte. It was very tasty! They had desserts that looked great as well!

We stopped in for a grab-n-go breakfast and coffee to take to the waterfront. Everything was delicious - we had the spinach quiche, broccoli strata, pumpkin cookie and lemon raspberry cheesecake bar. Highly recommend all of it, especially the toasted marshie latte. Great service and warm, welcoming environment, plus delicious food and coffee! I wish we could have stayed a while longer!

Not an overall fan. They forgot our drink. We went back to get it and they still made about 3 more drinks before starting it. The brownie was pretty good. The beer selection was small but well put together. Was just disappointed with the service. Not even a "sorry about that"

Pumpkin cheesecake to die for. Nice little coffee shop. Great spot for getting done work done or catching up with a friend. Quiet to moderate noise and plenty of seating. Nice staff and a solid cup of coffee.

This place is great. We stumbled across it while wandering around Charleston one cold and rainy day looking for a coffee and a quick snack. The Americano that I got was one of the best I've had in a long time, and reasonably priced. The muffin was pretty good as well-unfortunately, they were out of most of their food items since it was about 3 pm. Oh, and then our 2 year old daughter dumped her mug of hot milk all over everything and the helpful staff came right over to help clean it up without any complaints!! Definitely recommend.

Had the soup here. Delicious! Perfect on a cold day: hot, filling and tasty! Dessert was their famous sweet and salty marshmallow. Only "bad" thing is you just can't have one marshmallow: you want more they are so good!

I remember when this place first opened up as Baked and it was the NY bakery's sister location. And I remember the first time I had one of their sweet & salty cupcakes. Serious foodgasm. And then they transferred owners and a lot of stuff stayed the same but for some reason, I just don't love it as much as I used to. The good: They have free wi-fi and it's a great place to go in with your laptop to get some work done. Chill vibe and great music. Most of what they do is pretty good. The cupcakes, cookies and various sweets I've had have all been decent, though not necessarily amazing (except the sweet & salty). My go-to drink here is their frozen mint lemonade. It's the perfect summertime drink. Sometimes I'll spontaneously walk over from my office just for one of these. The bad: I'm not crazy about their coffee (Black Tap is a better option for serious coffee drinkers). Not much selection of eats and they'd benefit from some more savory options. They used to offer sandwiches that were pretty good at one point but for whatever reason, they stopped doing that. I'll also give them snaps for having a decent (at least for a bakery) beer selection. They have Allagash and that makes me happy.

Thanks to bakehouse free wifi I'm writing this review. I drove into Charleston in a rain storm. I had planned to go on a garden tour but it seems that is not happening. But hey, who doesn't love sitting in a cafe all day? This one is sure doing the trick. There's a steady stream of what seems to mostly be locals. Everyone's having a merry time. They have a few drinks that are unique enough to really catch my eye. Had a peanut butter mocha that was very well balanced and tasty. I also had a little personal chicken pot pie. Yum. I imagine that I'll be here for a while if this storm doesn't let up. But there could be worse fates. And I see a whoopie pie that is calling my name!

We stumbled across this place after dinner when I was in need of a caffeine pick-me-up... and a sweat treat! Based on the line we stood in, this is quite a popular place. I think the best baked goods must be available earlier in the day (the other reviews have me drooling right now). There weren't that many options when we were there, so I opted for a salted caramel marshmallow. If you like homemade marshmallows (or have never tried anything other than the store-bought variety!), do yourself a favor & treat yourself to one of those sugary squares. They offer several specialty lattes here, so be sure to check those out. Friendly staff, despite being busy. Not quite our favorite local coffee shop in Charleston, but definitely towards the top of our list & we'd return on our next visit.

Chill, spacious cafe with rotating selection of freshly baked scones and muffins. Friendly service and strong coffee. Not too hipster (although not being local, I'm not sure if hipsterism is a thing here). Strawberry lemon scone was pleasant. Display cases full of pies and quiches, jars full of hefty cookies and brownies. Craft beer menu as well. Good rest stop if you are in the neighborhood.

This place was pretty good - I had the Salted Brownie and Chocolate Cloud Cookie. The brownie was pretty good- nice chocolate flavor and a bit of saltiness could be tasted throughout the brownie...the texture was definitely perfect. The cookie was also good - not too dry and full of chocolatey flavor. This is a good, easy-going spot to visit for a relaxed evening of desserts. I'm not a coffee drinker but several customers ordered coffee and seemed to like it.

Stop in for the coffee. This place was a little pricier than Starbucks but well worth the extra change. The coffee was tasteful and extremely smooth. Bakehouse has figured it out.

We used to love this place when it was the SC branch of Baked and the name change has scarcely affected it at all. We have been here every day of an all too short stay in Charleston and love it. Pumpkin bread was a treat and they still brew a mean cup of tea!

I am only writing this review on the brownie because that's all I've had. I live in North Carolina and my husband brought home one of their packaged brownies from somewhere and it was the most disgusting thing I have ever eaten. I know a lot of bakeries use salt now in some of their baking and it's supposed to be the new big thing but if that's what they were trying to do with their brownie, they really shouldn't. Either they were doing it on purpose and they failed miserably because it taste like crap or it was an accident which just goes to show they have no quality control. Like I said, the brownie is the most disgusting thing I've ever eaten in my life. It was like a mouth full of salt. I really don't think I would ever try any of their other products. You never have a second chance to make a first impression......too bad.

This is hands-down the best bakery and coffee shop in the French Quarter. Owner Tracy, manager Jennifer, and their friendly and hard-working staff are delightful to be around. They have eye-catching, fresh-baked creative cakes, biscotti, quiches, biscuits, croissants, muffins, and cookies (must ask for the "Monster" cookie which is seasonal). They have every kind of espresso or coffee you can imagine, as well as craft beer. On top of having an inviting atmosphere with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and wi-fi service, they are right along a cobblestone road with gorgeous views of the Old Exchange Building and the Charleston harbor. I am a local, and choose Bakehouse when I am in the French Quarter to meet friends and out-of-town guests to show off the BEST of what Charleston has to offer. A must!

3.5* Local bakery/coffee shop with good coffee and decent selection of baked goods.Their pistachio whoopie pie is delicious. The downside is that the afternoon sun is really bright though and there are no shades to block the sun from the tables.

Amazing service from totally friendly staff and a lovely selection of seasonal specials, including a frozen mint lemonade that blew my mind. A special shout out to the ladies behind the counter that found and kept safe the keys that two out-of-towners foolishly dropped in the booth as those kids enjoyed said lemonades. Our greatest thanks, you guys are the best.

The Bakehouse was a mid-day stop to get us out of the summer sun. This café is perfectly casual and comes well-stocked with coffee drinks, beers and baked goods. I also couldn't resist their little brownie square with coarse salt by the counter. It was delicious and went perfectly with my iced tea. I loved it here and their AC was cranking because I left the place quite cooled down. It's a great spot to catch up with friends or read up on your latest novel. Minus one star for only have a single restroom.

I went to Baked just this morning to sample their goodies. I purchased 1. A Chocolate Cupcake with White Frosting, 2. A Jumbo biscuit, 3. A Creme de Menthe brownie 4. A Hazelnut Shortbread raspberry torte bar First I will say I went wanting croissants and they did not have any!! But I wanted everything they had on display! They do an amazing job with presentation. 1. The Chocolate cupcake left something to be desired. The cake was good, moist and crumbly. Though not quite as chocolaty as it could have been. The Icing, I am not sure I can even call it icing. It was just marshmallow fluff. I do not think they added any powdered sugar or Crisco. 2. The Jumbo biscuit- Not exactly what I was expecting, but it was good for what it was. I make homemade biscuits from scratch, so that is what I think off when I buy a biscuit. This one was different in that it seemed to be a cornbread type biscuit. The consistency was good, and again the size was HUGE. 3. Creme de Menthe brownie- Yummy. It was exactly what I thought it would be. 4. The hazelnut crust had a good shortbready consistency and complemented the raspberry filling well. I've got some pictures to put up shortly! The staff was a bit stand offish, but worked quickly to put my order together. The overall price was just more than $10.00, which for 4 items seems really pricey. I hope I can make it back here for lunch and a slice of that amazing looking chocolate cake.

For months I've been hearing about the sweet and salty brownies from Baked. My girlfriend who lives in Brooklyn raved about them. On my last visit, we tried to get to the Red Hook location before it closed, but to no avail. So the elusive "best brownie ever" has remained a mystery. Until I stumbled across Baked in Charleston, that is. I immediately recognized the logo from the postcard my friend sent me raving about said brownies. Could it be? A Brooklyn-based bake shop has expanded to Charleston of all places? I pinged my friend and stepped inside and after seeing the signs for Stumptown Coffee (from my hometown of Portland, OR no less!) and a jar full of none other than those sweet and salty brownies, I knew it was true. Baked has migrated south. The brownie was worthy of the hype. Dense, rich dark chocolate intermixed with just the right amount of sea salt, it was truly a treat. We also went for the chocolate cupcake with salted caramel frosting, which was also well balanced in the sweet and salty department. The cupcakes were only $1.75 each, which was a shock, because I come from the land of $3 cuppies. There's free WiFi, a space adjacent to the bake shop for lounging and a selection of sandwiches, drinks and of course, Stumptown Coffee. Lucky, lucky Charleston has been bestowed a wonderful spot.

How does a bakery not have orange juice? Not like they were out of it, like they never sell it. The choco-banana muffin I had was like every other chocolate with banana muffin I've ever had except the staff is so incredibly slow that it took me 15 minutes for me to get it. There were 2 people in front of me, so we're talking 5 minutes per person to get a coffee and pastry. I know you're too hip to move with any sense of urgency with your newsboy cap and plaid shirt, but let's get a move on. If Ben Gibbard wanted a muffin I bet he'd have it in 5 seconds. One plus is that by the time I got my muffin I had actually grown a beard so I was definitely more hip.

I love the atmosphere at Bake House Charleston. I get the Salty Brownie and Chocolate Krackle Cookie EVERY visit (at least once or twice a week) and I LOVE IT. The staff is amazing and is a true example of southern hospitality. Everyone should check out Bake House everytime they visit Charleston and/or are on East Bay Street!

I'm a fan of the coffee and the brownies but today's experience was not the best. The young lady working the counter thought it was more important to catch up with a friend, who was a paying customer I'll grant her, than continue helping the other customers waiting in line. If she wanted to do this she could have at least gotten her coworker out of the back to help as opposed to waiting till he just happened to show up and help 3 customers while she continued her important conversation. I'll try to forget this experience next time I get a mid afternoon brownie craving.

My girlfriend took me here because she had a wonderful experience when the store was affiliated with Baked. Although Bakehouse no longer carries certain recipes, we settled on something different with the Peanut Butter Cheesecake Bar. Holy crap. It's little tough to eat because the chocolate layer is hard as a rock when served cold, so cutting pieces can cause the bar to fall apart if you use too much force trying to pierce the chocolate layer. Structural issues aside, it's essential three components: a hard milk chocolate layer, the peanut butter cheesecake filling, and the cookie on the bottom. Any of these components individually were unbalanced by themselves. Maybe too rich, too peanut-buttery (yeah, there is such a thing), or whatever, but together, they really form a perfect bit of desert goodness.

This will be a two part review, if I decide to go back and I find time to. Didn't get a very good impression of this place on my visit.I showed up around 10:30 or 11 on Valentine's Day, figuring they would have something Valentine's Day related, preferrably a cupcake. Didn't think that was too far fetched of an idea. Waited in line for 5 or so minutes, only to find out they didn't have anything like I wanted. I asked how long it would be until the cupcakes would be ready and I got, "I guess when they are ready. Probably around 1 or so." I said thank you and exited stage right. I figured the guy at the register could have been nicer, but he had just dealt with some rude people in front of me. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, and give it 2 stars.

  • Frank S.

Decent coffee house, OK food selection for the price its OK although I requested a cup of fresh decaf as the pot was visibly low, though they put a fresh bag of beans above the pot guess they forgot to push the "go button" as after a good 5 mins I asked about my coffee, Oh she said, pushed the go button & immediately pours my cup which was essentially the dregs of what was in bottom of pot old nasty coffee.. When I pointed this out she informed me no it's a "Fresh batch I just hit the button" so if you want a regular fresh coffee may want to try someplace else..

I am a huge fan of the boys behind Baked. I have been to their shop in Red Hook and i own both of their cookbooks. While in the Charleston area in the summertime, i was so excited to try their other location. Upon entering the bakeshop and glancing in the coolers, something did not look right. I was talking to one of the shop girls and she told me that the owners had sold the shop, but insisted that the recipes and the ingredients used were the same, me thinks not. First i had the marshmallow which i must admit was good, and reminded me of the ones that they sell in Brooklyn. However once biting into the dry cake their was quite a taste difference. Also the buttercream they typically decorate their cupcakes with is smooth and silky, the ones used at Bakehouse was definitely a frosting. I am glad that they have since changed their name to Bakehouse Charleston, because they are not BAKED.

Wonderful food, I had the strata, pumpkin muffin and salted brownie. All good plus strong coffee.

The cinnamon roll warmed is a real treat almost a brioche like dough. The chocolate crinkle cookies were also very delicious moist with a great chocolate flavor.

I used to live in Charleston and discovered this place after reading about it in Oprah's magazine. The bakery decor is simply amazing and one of the kind. It's a mix of retro and modern decor. This place gets 5 stars primarily because of the Salty Sweet Cake. If you love chocolate...this is the most amazing cake ever. The cake is a dark chocolate cake w/ chocolate ganache and fleur de sal...together, it is a perfect harmony of flavors! You won't find this cake anywhere else or anything close to it in the city. The only downfall about this place is that the cake isn't always available and that you don't get free refills on the coffee.

Charleston is a town where history is in the houses and the stones. It leaps out at you, smiling sometimes, sometimes grabbing you by the heart. It's a place I'll visit in the future. I don't know how we managed to time our overnight visit so that we arrived on the exact 150th anniversary of the bombardment of Fort Sumter and the beginning of the Civil War. Just happened that way, without planning, which kind of describes my life. I remember aiming for a quiet moment in early 2008 to drive my rental car around the Arc de Triomphe. Early arvo, I thought, it will be about as empty as it gets during daylight hours. Of course, that happened to be just a few seconds before the Olympic flame for the Beijing games passed through, and there were about a million protestors and gendarmes and helicopters and tourists... Charleston was full of tourists for the anniversary. People dressed in period costume, people with cameras, sometimes all three in the same frame. We stopped at a bakery to pick up a bunch of salty brownies for Discoverylover and the struggle to find a parking space within walking distance reminded me of the Arc de Triomphe episode a bit. Anyway, we eventually found a a spot that was legal, dropped a quarter in, and looked into the bakery. Big jars of goodies: muffins, cookies and yup, saltwater brownies. A young man asked me what my desire was, and I looked him square in the eye, and said in my Australian accent, "I have travelled here from the year 1957 to buy a dozen of these brownies." This is technically correct, but still he gasped, said, "What?" and gave me the sweet pleasure of repeating my line. I then fumbled with the coinage when paying him, holding out a palm of change to let him select the correct amount. US currency is always difficult for an Aussie, with those nickels and dimes the wrong way around. Speaking of sweet pleasure, FutureCat and I sampled one of the dozen, and dear glory, but it was good! If there are more than a few crumbs left in the box tomorrow, Discoverylover, it will be a miracle!

Get the Monster Cookie!! Peanut butter, chocolate chips, oatmeal, and m &ms in a wonderful balance. Great walking around snack. The red velvet hot chocolate was quite sweet but a great pairing with the cookie on a chilly afternoon. The staff is really nice and helpful.

I was totally unaware of the Brooklyn Baked's hype when my boyfriend and I stopped in to acquire him a hot bevvie to go as we continued our afternoon wandering around downtown Charleston. We waited in line 8 people long for 15 minutes, but had I wanted to purchase a baked good, I'm sure the wait would have been well worth it--everything in the counters and cases were drool-worthy. My boyfriend was pleased to find that they had loose-leaf tea but slightly disappointed in their meager selection (and that the barista incorrectly advised him that their keemun would be close enough to an English breakfast, of which they were out). Had we wanted to linger, Baked would have been a delightful spot to do so. Next time we have reason to be in town, I plan to return when in the mood for sweets.

I've never had a bad experience at Baked. To address the issue some people have with slow service, it's a small place, so you sort of have to expect that they'll have just a couple of people working at once, and the service might be slower than a corporate place with lots of employees. People have become way too obsessed with "I want it and I want it NOW." That said, I've never been when there was a crowd. But you'll get the same type of service with any small place (such as Kudu). As far as the food goes, I think it's fabulous. I've never tasted their cupcakes or wedding cakes (there are much better local specialty places for those types of things), but I have tried the Pumpkin Whoopie Pie, Chocolate-Raspberry Macaron, Red Velvet Whoopie Pie, Chocolate Chip Cloud Cookies, Homemade Marshmallows, and their very best concoction: the Sweet and Salty Brownie. To die for. The coffee's great too. And I don't find it to be anymore "hipster" than any of the other coffee shops or bakeries in town. Give me a break. If you're going to hang out at one of these places, you have to expect that. Especially with the hipster attitude all over this city. All around, Baked is a very nice place to visit, and a great place to spend a little relaxed time with friends over coffee and sweets.

Love this place! Very hipster and chill vibe. The cupcakes are really good. The chocolate caramel with salt is my favorite. Didn't love the red velvet but you can't do everything right can you? Random side note, their tshirts are really cool and reasonably priced. Staff was friendly, especially their head chef. She's super nice! Will be back again soon!

I stopped here the other day when it was quite cold outside and got some tea. The tea seems a little overpriced considering it is mostly hot water ($2). My husband ordered a hot chocolate - the small was $3. They tasted good, but I am not sure they were worth how much we were charged. The place was busy and we had to share a table with someone working on his laptop. The place is nice inside. You do have to bus your own table, which is fine, but makes me wonder why there is an option to tip if you are doing the majority of the work.

My husband and I only spent 2 mornings in Charleston but we tried out 3 bakeries altogether (I happen to love breakfast food). Bakehouse was our favorite of the 3 (Whisk and Normandy Farms were the other two). There was plenty of seating which I liked. We split coffee, coffee cake, and a egg and sausage biscuit. The egg sandwich was my husband's favorite and I loved the coffee cake. Both were delicious and huge portion sizes!

Over the course of a 3-day visit to Charleston we visited Baked three times. It was that good. The scones were huge and delicious and inventive. The muffins were equally as good, and the desserts were perfect. They even make their own marshmallows (including chocolate and vanilla). And yes, I tried one. They also make a variety of coffee drinks (all with high-end Stumptown) and have a large listing of teas. Enjoy Baked!

We made a pit stop at Baked prior to embarking on the drive back to Atlanta. While we intended to purchase healthy, robust multigrain breads [or something similar], as per usual, we wound up with sugar dusted muffins and fat brownies. It's not exactly a bread shop although I did pick up a slice of chocolate apricot bread. Service was iffy; we definitely didn't feel welcome and we certainly felt rushed. After a couple of awkward exchanges with the cashier, we decided to just limit our purchases to the following: + Sweet and salty brownie: it does what it says on the tin. It's sweet. It's salty. It's yummy. A perfect blend of rich chocolate, homemade caramel, and bursts of salty goodness. Stayed moist for the entirety of our journey and overnight. A definite winner. + Original deep dark brownie: Classic brownie with rich flavor. Also very moist, textured like chocolate bread pudding. Very good. + Ginger blueberry cranberry muffin: yep, that's what it was. + Chocolate Apricot bread: it sounded really awesome, if a little unusual, but tasted like a pot brownie. And let's face it, despite how much people want to rave about their recipes, pot brownies taste like shit. You convince yourself to take another bite and another, in the hopes of catching a little lift, but yeah, it's not good. Then I wondered if that's where the shop's name came from and I concocted a whole scenario about the owners and them coming in second at the Joint Rolling Championships. The brownies were so well executed, I can easily overlook the chocolate bread and none too hospitable service. 3.5

Bakehouse that has very small selection of bake goods. I opened door for delivery person that brought trays with cakes and scones. That just assured me that no much baking is going on here. Coffee ok in to go cup long line on ONE bathroom which was not clean at all. Staff make you feel like they have to rush for some reason and no one smile at you. Disappointed with the place.

great nutella hot cocoa, fantastic salty cocoa, and wonderful peppermint rose herbal tea. This was a great place to stumble on when it was SO cold outside!! Watch out for the tea bags they aren't sealed and we didn'y know we couldn't stir it. Our bag emptied out into our cup but they were nice enough to make us a fresh one after explaining the bags were only folded not sealed closed. I wish I had more time to sit and enjoy the atmosphere and I will definately be back for some treats next time!!

Apple bacon cheddar scone. It was awesome, as was the peach crumble muffin. Vanilla lattes were great, too. Bathrooms were clean and the staff were very nice. Definitely a great coffee shop in Charleston.

We drove over to do some back-to-school shopping for my daughter and my wife wanted to stop in and grab some of the sweet and salty brownies. The atmosphere was pretty cool, but the display was surprisingly small. I got one of the big oatmeal cookies, which tasted good, but was a bit dry and crumbly. My daughter got the homemade marshmallows and seemed to enjoy it, but I couldn't taste anything.

Baked is solid. Good coffee--sourcing Stumptown, which is pretty amazing all the way out here. I was not disappointed in any of the baked goods we tried. The atmosphere is nice, a good place to hang for a bit and read the paper. I don't get it about Charleston, there are not as many coffee-centric coffee houses as I might have expected. There might be ones I missed but until then Baked became my go-to spot.

Walked in today hoping to try one of their cupcakes that one of my neighbor raves about. They looked beautiful so I ordered three, Vanilla with Chocolate Icing, Peanut Butter Chocolate and the Sweet and Salty Chocolate. Beware! They look great but they tasted old. The frosting was perfect but when you got to the cake portion instead of it being fluffy and moist it was dry and crumbly. Be sure to ask if they are baked same day, or you'll be sorry. The barista offered to tell the pastry chef, but did say that they were to be thrown out at the end of the day. If I would return it would only be for the coffee, but not the pastries. Really disappointed. I will say the decor is amazing, it is definitely a place to hang out and relax on their comfy booths.

The ginger-molasses cookie was great here, it had a soft and chewy center and great flavor. I also got a snickerdoodle, which was good but not as great as the ginger-molasses cookie. They don't really have a large selection of food, but all of it looked pretty good. They had your typical assortment of drinks that you find at a cafe, and their coffee is good. The service was good, although it seemed like it would be slow if it was busy. The inside was very well setup and they have an extra room to sit in besides the main one in the cafe.

Baked is good at baking brownies. And Cakes. And little dessert squares with pecans in them. They're also good at pulling off weird flavor combinations that sound just a little scary, like sweet and salty brownies and red hot red velvet cake. On baked goods alone I would have given Baked five stars. Unfortunately they're also shameless merchandisers, they've got a whole wall of cookbooks, t-shirts and mugs that dominates the middle of the store and detracts from the atmosphere of the place. Outside of that, the staff are unfailingly friendly and helpful and even made a pot of coffee for me when I came in 15 minutes before closing time. The coffee is nothing to write home about but the specialty drinks are better. All in all it's a decent place to grab an after dinner treat, but the vibe doesn't lend itself to hanging out and sipping on a cup of coffee - imagine sitting down to drink coffee in Urban Outfitters and you'll know what I'm talking about

Exceptional baked goods. I tried the Savory Breakfast Pocket and my friends had a blueberry muffin and a mixed berry scone. The muffin and scone were crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside the breakfast pocket was wonderfully savory. The staff were delightful and gave us a complementary cupcake for our birthday celebration. The shop also includes a variety of cards, tshirts and gifts. Overall rating? Fantastic!

great baked goods, little shy on the service front. one girl was nice, the other let me drive the entire transaction, as if I were the one working there. I don't think she said one word the whole time. nice.

When you stick to what you know, there are often times glorious results. Baked knocks it out of the park with - you guessed it - their baked goods. From bacon, jalepeno,& maple glazed scones to their great muffins of every variety. Still waiting to try the "Brookie" (a cookie / brownie combo) but that will come soon enough. Now if they stopped there, they would be 5 stars in my book. But it's where they try their hand at coffee that I have to take away a star. Have not had ANY good experiences with their coffee drinks at all unfortunately. I know that if I want the best baked goods in Downtown Charleston, this is the place to go. I just have to hit up somewhere else if I want a coffee drink to go with it.

All I have to say is Cupcake has some serious competition in the cupcake department. Fluffy and yummy on the inside, just crisp on the top, with an appropriately sized dollop of icing. Starbucks has nothing to worry about in the chai latte department.

More spacious than the Brooklyn store, but with a lot less options. Weirdly the goods are plastic wrapped, I guess because they ship them from Brooklyn but still, it took a bit of the fresh feel out of the experience for me. Still, they gave me free muffins with my T-shirt purchase, the coffee was the best I had in Charleston, and I love their brownies!

I just got one thing here, the sweet and salty chocolate cupcake. I found I didnt like how much salt was on top, it was UBER intense, but once I scraped some of it off it was delicious. Really light, melt in your mouth buttercreme and the cupcake itself was moist with caramel inside. The filling wasnt too overwhelming, just tasty.

No wonder Baked is so yummy, they are a Brooklyn-based bakery! It's all starting to make sense now. Being from up north, I know what a good cupcake is and you won't find one at Cupcake on King St. Glad I found a great little spot with NYC-flare for delicious treats! Great location and cozy spot to hang out. A must see if you are in town!

Salty brownie is a classic. Brings the old caramel popcorn balls back to mind. Salty sweet is a good thing! I also tried the rosemary apricot tart and was a great alternative if your looking for something not ultra sweet. My friend had a cup cake that she refused to share but stated that it was fluffy and moist. The cappuccinos are served in European style cups so the froth is wide spread and wonderful. A perfect snack place after walking downtown.

Nice little coffee shop. I was in desperate need of a cold drink, so my man and I stopped in for an ice coffee. We ended up splitting an almond scone. It was pretty good; not the best I've ever had. If it were not so hot outside, I would have tried a slice of cake or a cupcake. Otherwise, nothing too special, but fills the need for a nice cool coffee shop.

I used to love this place when it was known as Baked. Lots of great little goodies. Alas, the last time I was in Charleston I got a sandwich on bread so stale I spit it out and tossed the rest of it. Dry, stale bread is just not acceptable. Ever.

After reading all the rave reviews about Baked, I was a bit disappointed. The barista did not pay attention to the pour as she was multitasking giving me change while preparing my latte, and so my drink was bitter. the blueberry muffin was just ok. Quite a disappointing experience. I will stick with Kudu.

Salty brownie tasted nothing of salt and was too sweet. Counter service was mediocre and very un-friendly...so not on par for Charleston. Wouldn't go there again. Too many other yummy places in Charleston to eat with nice staff eager to be of service.

While in Charleston today (8-5-10) I must say that I'm not sure what all of the fuss is about. The shop, while clean was unimpressive and the atmosphere was quite boring. Understanding that this isn't all that important when it comes to taste and quality, I have to say that the desserts we ordered were down right awful. My son of 16, who is in the habit of eating quite a bit and never one to turn something away, had the red velvet cake and it was in his opinion "tasteless and dry." I had their "most sought after" strawberry shortcake and after one bite threw it away. I guess we should have ordered a brownie and cupcake. Sorry Baked, not for us.

Back in Charleston over New Year's weekend and Bakehouse has definitely become one of my favorite places in town. Excellent coffee and lattes and incredible baked goods. Peanut Butter Cheesecake was fantastic as was the Maple Pecan bar. Went back for breakfast of homemade granola and fruit parfait and tried the peppermint mocha which was also excellent. The library room here can get crowded but is unique in Charleston and a great place to hang out and check email on the free wifi.

Delicious chai lattes, I love their quiche & whoopie pies too! The staff here is always friendly...sure, service may be slow during the busiest times of day, but at what small cafe/bakery is this not the case? I honestly don't mind waiting as long as my food & drink is tasty, and it always is.

My fiance and I were planning a wedding on Kiawah Island about 45 minutes outside of Charleston. We wanted cupcakes, but did not know where to start. As Chicagoans we see cupcake shops all throughout our city. We were unfamiliar with the "cupcake scene" in Charleston and relied on a Google search to direct us to Bakehouse Charleston (formerly Baked) on E Bay Street. It has since become one of our favorite places! At our tasting we were greeted warmly by Tracey and a selection of four cupcakes, coffee and water for our palates. Tracey was so organized and friendly. She asked us questions about our wedding and wrote down our feedback. She helped us select three distinct cupcakes for our wedding. The tasting cupcakes were fantastic, even at 9 am. On the day of our wedding, Bakehouse Charleston delivered all 110 cupcakes (vanilla bean, salted chocolate and red velvet) to our wedding venue over 45 minutes away. Even with the travel, each cupcake was meticulously designed and perfect. They were the centerpiece of our wedding reception and a favorite of our guests. Many of our guests were from outside the Charleston area. So many remarked that the cupcakes were the highlight of the evening, and several inquired about whether they could have the cupcakes shipped. We were so impressed with everything, especially the size, design and taste of the cupcakes. We could not have worked with a better group of people. If you're looking for a perfect venue to read a book and eat a cupcake visit their shop! If you're looking for the perfect cupcake for your venue visit their shop! I cannot write enough good things about Baked - perfect service, perfect taste! Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Great iced coffee, the atmosphere is sub par, the service was uncomfortable and the baristas were not very attentive as we only received two of the three items we ordered. Not sure about all the "hipster" reviews, definitely not a hipster spot. They may be a great bakery, I couldn't say but as far as the "coffee shop" is concerned, I was not overly impressed.

Just visited this coffee and bakery shop. Prices are great. $4 for a delicious green tea and a scone. You could never do that at Starbucks. I was delighted that the scone was large but didn't taste heavy, like so many scones do. This one was fluffy and light but full flavored delicious. I'll be back to try some of the cupcakes and brownies.

we just moved back to charleston from new york, and i randomly saw on the baked website that they recently opened a charleston location. so of course (in missing my levain cookies) i had to try out their new location. brownies were exceptional as always and my boyfriend raved about their pecan pie. coffee was just ok. another bonus, the decor is great as well!

Yum! So much to try, so little time! I was torn between the gorgeous little cupcakes, the root beer chocolate cake...opted for the less sinful but still decadent "whoopee pie"...definately a must-stop for any Charleston visit!

I wasn't aware that Baked in Brooklyn had opened a second shop, in Charleston of all places, until I stumbled upon it while in the city for the day. We were on our way out of town so only had time to grab a quick coffee (adequate) and a sweet and salty brownie (delicious) to go. The real highlight of our visit, for me, was the individually sold homemade flavored marshmallows. I snatched a peppermint marshmallow to bring home. Once at home I submerged it in my hot chocolate, and it was divine. I should have bought more than the one. The decor was lovely. I could spend an entire afternoon reading and sipping coffee in their "library". I must mention though, that the staff was a bit prickly. Our visit took place on the Saturday after Christmas and perhaps the holiday spirit was a thing of the past for these two particular girls. They could have been a tad more friendly. I will be back, despite.
