We love the Ashley Inn! My husband and I opted for a B&B for our trip to Charleston and so glad we did. Every single person we met, guests and staff alike, were lovely. We had some travel issues getting there and the sweet girl at the front was kind enough to stay late to check us in and make sure we were comfortable for the night. She took time to give us helpful tips and recommendations for our visit, all of which turned out to be great referrals. The breakfasts were delicious and always served with a smile. The owner, Barry, was present at each breakfast to greet guests and was extremely warm and pleasant. I overheard him give some great recommendations when patrons asked and even threw in some interesting history - he knows his Charleston! The accommodations were clean and adorable and the atmosphere so charming. We can't wait to go back!

We were extremely happy with our stay at the Ashley Inn Bed and Breakfast. Our room was large and comfortable, the caretaker was always available when we needed her, and the food was delicious. They even put out wine and snacks in the afternoon! The location was perfect, and we spent a lot of time just walking around the gorgeous neighborhood and sampling the local food. For the price, we could not have been happier.

I came to Charleston to have a minor surgical procedure, and the Ashley Inn is the most conveniently located hotel near the hospital. I opted for it instead of the Holiday Inn to be able to walk to restaurants while in recovery, and in the hopes that it would be a more 'intimate' and friendly setting. Three employees were very kind to me and helpful, they both deserve 5 stars (Charise and Veronica, the third I cannot recall the name of) - otherwise it was a bit of a lackluster experience. My first few days there the woman who was attending the Inn seemed annoyed by my presence. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being 'judged' somehow. (Single woman traveling alone? visible tattoos? I'm not sure why I was looked at with a sour face every day - I'm a PhD student and a teacher, not a criminal). Being that it was a little pricier than a regular hotel, I think the next time I would opt to just go for a regular hotel. It would be a far better place if Charise and Veronica ran it - they know how to make someone feel at home while traveling - and if they updated the decor a bit. It wasn't charming or 'quaint' - it more seemed like your grandmothers living room decorated from a cheap catalogue. And the food? very meh. Not at all high end dining or much different from any other hotel breakfast buffet. Same goes for the wine hour. It has potential, but not quite worth the price yet. Lastly, I agree with prior reviewers, ancient beds with poking springs! Also, the internet is free but barely works.

Our stay at this B&B was just outstanding. The staff (Jan and LaVern) were just totally wonderful with all the help they provided. You couldn't have asked for a more pleasant place to stay on our first trip into Charleston. The rooms were clean and pleasant. Breakfast was a great surprise on how good it was. We will stay here again. I even bought an Ashley Inn ornament so we could remember our wonderful stay here.

I almost didn't book a room at the Ashley after seeing some of these reviews, but I'm glad I took a chance and stayed here for two nights at the end of summer 2012. For downtown Charleston, I felt like the pricing was competitive, the rooms nice, and the breakfast delicious. The caretaker, Jan, was super nice and very helpful, offering us beach chairs for the beach and suggesting restaurants to eat at. Our room (# 3) was very nice-- not huge, but certainly big enough to be comfortable for two. Our bed was very comfortable with some sort of memory foam mattress on top of the regular mattress. The only thing I would mention is that it is a bit of a haul to the Battery and the neighborhood south of Broad St. We walked it several times, and it was fine and certainly doable, but it wasn't a walk I'd want to do very late at night.

Super disappointed from start to finish. The pictures do not do justice to what this place looks like now. The place was dusty and there was no caretaker on the premises. He was down the street at another property. Very creepy all around. Parking is ludicrous and the beds were unbelieveably uncomfortable. The pull-out sofa hadn't been pulled out in ages and the coil springs were popping through. Oh, and the slanted ceiling above the bed - not charming, really. Ouch.

This is as good as it gets. It was a great experience. With the great location, gournmet breakfast, and sincerly friendly staff you can't go wrong with Ashley Inn. Note: Make sure to bring small vehicle; limited and small spaces. Thank you for a wonderful time, staff at Ashley Inn. J.Torrence

Stayed here for 3 nights April 17-20. The place was a big disappointment. We are experienced travelers, and expect to have a representative available at all times. The innkeeper was only available until 8PM, but even then he was unavailable most of the time as he was attending to a sister property down the street. It would have been nice for him to have been around during happy hour to refill the wine. Fortunately we had no emergencies, but if we did the results would have not been good. The rooms are adequate but some of the furnishings had not been dusted in a long time. The pricing is very competitive, but the lack of quality does not make up for it.

You never know for sure what to expect when you book a reservation to a B&B online sight unseen, but my husband and I were pleasantly surprised. The inn was well appointed, very comfortable, and the staff and owner couldn't have been nicer, more helpful, and were also very knowledgeable about Charleston. The breakfasts were outstanding and there were several really good restaurants within walking distance. Its location is a bit too far to walk to the shopping area, but we didn't mind. The only thing I wasn't too keen on was the tiny bathroom with the sink outside in the main sleeping area (I couldn't blow dry my hair without disrupting my husband), but that was a small thing made up for by being able to walk out of the room onto the porch and internet access. We happened to be the only guests in the inn on Halloween night, so I anxiously waited all night, camera on the night stand, for the legendary ghost to appear. Unfortunately, I fell fast asleep from a busy day of touring the city and visiting the Magnolia Plantation. I highly recommend this inn. Charleston is an amazing city!
