My husband and I checked out the Lobster Bar on a beautiful weekday afternoon for some lunch. I first noticed the renovations that have taken place since last summer....new floor plan and open feel to the restaurant. You'll still walk by the actual Adirondack lobster company (where lobsters are stored and sold) out into the Lobster Bar restaurant. The large, open bar still has the central focus of the place but there are a lot more tables (and opportunities) to eat with a view of Newport harbor than there were in the past which is a big plus! The nautical decorations are a nice touch as well, with some photo holes for tourist pictures (stick your head in a lobster for a funny memory picture) which always seem like a good idea after a cocktail! The views from this restaurant are hard to top, especially given the prices which are fairly reasonable in comparison to many other waterfront restaurants in Newport. You'll have a front row seat to check out all of the boats in the harbor, as well as the bridge in the distance. The Landing, its sister restaurant, is right next door, but typically has a longer restaurant and not as spectacular views. For our lunch, we enjoyed the calamari (enormous portion and some of the best we have ever had, RI style of course with peppers and marinara!), the burger (large portion with some tasty seasoned fries), and the lobster taco (good portion of lobster with guacamole and veggies in a tortilla). Next time, I think we will try the fritter appetizers as they have lobster, clams, and scallops which looked delicious at the table next to us! The bathrooms are the one part of the restaurant still in need of some love. But that being said, hard to complain with the view and food you'll get here! Tips: All of the sandwiches/wraps come with chips (a bag of plain Lay's) but you can upgrade to fries, a green salad, or cole slaw for a few dollars. This is one of the only places you'll find that the lobster roll is not served with mayo...the lobster is seasoned with dill and served with lettuce in a buttered role. In my opinion, it's so much better without the mayo and the way a lobster roll should be! Try to snag a table right on the water (it's worth the wait) and you'll get to ogle the various boats traveling in and out of the harbor. If you're lucky enough to get a table for around sunset, you'll be in awe of a classic Newport bridge sunset view! They don't advertise reservations, but I've been here a few times with a large group and we have called a few weeks beforehand to reserve a table with no issue!

A five star view was the highlight. My husband had the lobster platter, fish was over done and hard. Service was slow. My well done steak was burned. They did comp my husbands dinner for the bad fish, but that wasn't the point. Great view....bad food experience.

Stopped in for lunch after doing one of the early sightseeing cruises out of Newport. Great location so which was why we stopped. Unfortunately the location/view was probably the only real positive. Service was totally unremarkable. I guess it comes with being in a touristy spot, but the attitude is clearly one of pump em in and pump and out. No personality at all, everyone was just totally mechanical. As a result, we couldn't wait to finish and go (which I think is what they want). Had the clam chowder to start - not good - just no flavor and somewhat gritty. 3 of us had lobster rolls. Having come off the lobster roll at the Mooring earlier in the week maybe our expectations were too high, but these were just a total disappointment. No flavor at all, just totally unremarkable. One order of fish and chips and one lobster burger. Fish and chips were very greasy, very heavy and flavorless. Burger was just OK and the large piece of lobster on top was rubbery. I would skip it - so many better options. Note that the lobster rolls were $20 as opposed to the $19 at the Mooring and there is absolutely no comparison on quality. Great views at the Mooring as well and the service was far better.

Horrible. Don't even bother. Nice view, but wasted by the bad food. The lobster in our lobster roll ($20) was overcooked and tasteless. Steamers ($24 market price)were ok, probably not worth $24 Recommendation: have a drink and enjoy the view. TIP: If you want a lobster, order from Aquidneck lobster (the lobster wharf in front of the lobster bar) and just order it and eat it at home... And, you can order a 1 1/4 lb lobster and they'll steam It for you for a third of the price ($10.95 mkt price)

They have stepped up their game. Before they would have the lobster trays in front of the restaurant where you would have to walk through a watery mess to get to your table. They have renovated the restaurant to have the feeling of wooden loft beach side lobster shack. It's much better The service at the bar is still iffy. Women bartenders seemed to be more interested in talking and joking amongst themselves and their regulars than they were concerned about serving drinks. Our waiter was very attentive, the food was on point, and the ambiance was great. Lobsters were cooked perfectly, appetizers were delicious and we had an over all great experience. I recommend going for lunch. It's a great spot to eat and watch the boats passing by. It's reasonably priced for the location and quality of food

Terrible don't eat here. Ordered a salad and the chicken was ice cold like it just came out of the freezer. Go somewhere else.

GREAT lobster rolls!!! The husband and I both ordered the Hot Lobster Rolls ($20). Replaced the chips with salad ($2.50). The rolls had plenty of meat! Whole chunks of big, juicy, and buttery lobster! The only thing I wished was different is the size of the rolls, TOO SMALL! If they were only a bit bigger it'd make a hige difference. At first it looks like a lot of meat but it's just pretty much sitting on top of the roll really. I'd say a bit too pricy for that little bit of lobster. Next time I'd prefer a whole lobster, more meat. I ordered a red sangria ($9). It was ok. I'd recommend this place for people who want to buy a bunch of lobters by a bunch and make them at home.

3 star food, 5 star views from the deck. I like that the server came over with cold ice water with lemon first before we ordered. We ordered a Bloody Mary and a Sunrise something drink. Both very good, ordered a lobster bar raw platter 8 little necks, 8 oysters and 4 colossal shrimp $62 to start. A little high but it is Newport in the summer ..to be expected. A shrimp po'boy to split ($13.99) asked specifically that it be served after app. Of course, it was served while app platter still was on table . Pet peeve .. The raw platter was good, tasty, fresh and shrimp done just right. Po 'boy was, eh... Next time just drinks and apps . The view from the deck was the highlight, but the interior was exactly what some reviewers said, very summer cheesy camp. Cheap tables and plastic chairs, step up your game folks!! It's a prime location

Great experience. Casual and fun. I got the hot lobster roll, my wife got the traditional one. Both were excellent, the lobster was very fresh. Nice portions. I got a bag of chips with my roll, which wasn't bad but they should include fries (without extra charge) instead if you want them.

  • Jocelyn B.

I am going to say this The place is a prime location for view of the bridge and sunset and harbor. They have beautiful places to sit right on the water. Plastic chairs that kind of sucks So we ordered basic the Blackened Swordfish w pineapple salsa was 25.00 with fries and slaw I don't think it was fresh local sword, it was a super small piece and the salsa? Umm it was green peppers and red peppers and a few pieces of pineapple Gross Burger was 10.00 and supposed to be medium well, it was grilled to dry as a bone and the cheddar was a little skinny piece of junk. I didn't see ppl around us raving over the food. The waitress was friendly but only came over once except for pay time and order time. In the right hands the place would soar. Get a real chef!

I brought a couple colleagues from Japan to Newport to see the sights while on a business trip, so we thought we would try here because of the nice view. Being a native New Englander, I was embarrassed at how bad the food was. First i was confused by the place as it looks like it was half built, so I couldn't tell if they ran out of money building the place or it was intentional. I rate the food low quality and categorize it as bar food. The clam chowder is really bad for a place right in the water in Newport. I don't recommend the place and suggest trying someplace else if you want decent food.

First time back since they reopened after renovation. Whatever were they thinking? It's huge, no atmosphere any more. More like a summer camp dining hall. Was really funky with some charm. Renovations were obviously incomplete and devoid of any character. Stuffies were barely edible. If there was a clam in there you could slap me in the face and push me in the water. Lobster roll dry with no butter. Seriously? Calamari was greasy, so were fish and chips that were breaded not battered. Oh, yeah the view is great. But there's lots of places with good views in newport. And MUCH better food.

  • Jamie W.

I was not impressed nor disappointed with this choice. The place is a lobster market and later on someone decided to add chairs and tables. They have the ideal location, right on the water of course and would be a very hot spot in the summer. Couple things you can do, either sit down and enjoy the menu items prepared featuring lobster or come in pick up your own lobster and take him home. Now for the food, beyond casual but expensive due to location. I had the lobster and avocado salad. It tasted great and the dressing was well balanced. It was very simply, it didn't blow me away but I was disappointed either. The boys had the hot lobster roll with chips and lobster bisque. Came as is nothing more. They were pleased with their choices. It was expensive for what we had

Food was decent. I can't really say it was good unfortunately. I would have expected more than paper cups and plastic baskets considering the cost of food. Also we took our 4 children (one being a 2 year old that shared a meal) and was charged almost $40 in gratuity. We won't be back again and we won't be recommending to friends or family.

We were so disappointed by the food today. We came here a few summers ago and loved it. Decided to come back because of the last visit and because of the amazing view. Unfortunately the view was the only good thing about today's visit. The warm lobster rolls we had today were bland and dry. The lobster meat had no flavor at all. The rolls were toasted and buttered, but still flavorless. We also had the lobster bisque which was filled with big pieces of lobster, but the bisque was too sweet for my liking. The clam chowder was decent. If anything, come here for the view. Oh, the hostess and our server were really friendly and responsive which is always appreciated.

What have they done to my favorite restaurant in Newport. Evidently the drive to turn tables has trumped the very special appeal of this restaurant. What used to be the find of a life time, where you could belly up with locals as well as the social elite and eat the best lobster in a setting not found anywhere in the world. Now it's a dining hall, catering to tourists with zero atmosphere. Lost, is the unique character of this special place. Fair well my friend as we won't meet again.

  • Rick A.

Not fine dining! Paper cups , hard plastic chairs, food comes in plastic basket w/wax paper and atmosphere is very noisy. We had the littleneck clams and lobster fritter appetizers and split a lobster roll. 1beer and a Coke. Total $75 dollars. What a tourist trap!

Expected a lot more from this place based in reviews - gave it a 1 to even out the stars but is actually a 2. Don't get: -The lobster roll- lobster was not tasty, the lettuce was old and the roll was too much. -Cesar Salad- lettuce was old, dressing was gross.. Could have made a better one at home in my kitchen. Get: - Lobster Bisque Recommendation: The shells of the lobster are enough waste being out back into the environment, so I recommend to invest in reusable glassware for all beverages. Overall: will not be coming back, don't waste your time unless your starving or everywhere else is full. The view was nice tho.

The location is amazing, we had a table outside by the water and the view was beautiful ! The food was ok, not great, but ok & expensive. We started with the fried calamari which is served with cherry peppers & tossed in butter.. Sounded good, but in reality was soggy and greasy.. It would have been better if the peppers were fried and it was served without having been drenched in butter first. For dinner my daughter ordered the lobster bar burger and I ordered the grilled salmon. I asked for the salmon to be done medium rare and It was cooked all the way through and dry. The salmon was served with fries and corn and seemed a little over priced.. However , I was impressed with my daughter's burger.. Topped with lobster and goat cheese, all cooked perfectly and on a delicious buttery roll.. Again, at that price the platter should've come with fries instead of a bag of chips. All in all it wasn't a bad experience, but with so many other places to choose from in the area, I probably wouldn't go back on my next trip.. The service was good and we were seated quickly.

It's too bad the food was horrible because the view was amazing! I ordered the seafood linguine and it was horrible! No taste and the seafood appeared frozen and pre-cooked. Probably a good place for drinks and appetizers

I'm not sure why this place has 4 stars but the food is amazing! I had the best clam chowder out of the several places I ate out at while in downtown Newport. I also had the lobster salad roll (cold) and my parents shared the seafood platter and hot lobster roll. All the dishes were absolutely delicious! And the soup was perfect to keep me warm (coming from the South, the weather in newport in August got a little too cool). I didn't order any brunch drinks since I was driving, but the Bloody Mary's looked awesome! Definitely a spot you wanna eat at while in dt newport!

First time here, the view was excellent, service was good, the cod sandwich was good. My problem was the clam chowder. The menu says creamy New England clam chowder, not even close folks. You can't fool me. I try the clam chowder everywhere I go. This chowder was right out of a Campbell soup can. Very disappointed with that. I probably would only go back for the view and a few drinks.

I stumbled into this place and I am surprised I have not been here before. I am a native Rhode Islanduh and I missed the Lobstah Bah? Well I can't speak to the food but I can say that the view is awesome. It wasn't the warmest day out last Friday but non the less I sat on the outdoor deck and was pleasantly surprised to be shielded from the wind and rain. Very nice with just a hoody. I drank my Stella while watching sail boats bob in the water and birds diving for snacks. It was almost like I wasn't in Newport for a minute. Maybe I wish it was my back deck haha... I strongly suggest visiting if you want a scenic place to have a beer or maybe a 6 pound lobster whichever The Lobster Bar has it all.

My pretty companion got all gussied up in her favorite sundress yesterday, and we took a nice, long walk in the shopping area of Newport. Predictably, we shopped until SHE dropped and finally said, "I need lunch!" Seeing as how the sunshine and heat was plentiful (and the humidity hadn't ruined her hair) I took her to a quaint little place that will fool you at first, and fill you in the end. We got fooled as we stepped up into the first portion, thinking the first raw bar with covered seating was it. And we were going to leave until she grabbed my hand and said, "lets keep walking." She was right, we'd found the best part of the place...the deck in the back. We chose the hot lobster rolls for our waterside lunch, and they didn't disappoint. Filled with copious amounts of lobster, the shellfish delights were served on a nicely toasted roll with an amount of butter that wasn't overwhelming. These rolls rivaled any hot lobster roll served in CT. The deck, although crowded, gave us the chance to sit close and talk intimately, something we'd not done in a day or two. It afforded us the chance to share some things we'd wanted to share over our sojourn to Newport...before she had to run off again to The NYC. I'm going on record as recommending this little lobster joint, as well as our dessert spot, too. I'll be reviewing that one in an upcoming review. When in Newport, shop like crazy and eat here!

The Lobster Bar earns most its stars due to the location. Wander down Bowen's wharf past some of the bigger name restaurants and you will find it right up against the harbor. The front hosts a lobster/seafood market... just walk past to get through to the restaurant. Though it does get busy, there always seem to be a few tables and bar spots open even when the rest of the wharf is packed. Food is fairly "meh" compared to other options around town for the same price. I had a lobster quesadilla here that was fine, but not good enough to finish or order again. I've also had a salad that came out with pretty much all wilted spinach leaves. Bartenders are great. Drinks are average. View is amazing. Certainly not a bad choice for the area, but I don't think the food is worth the money.

Nothing like a whole lobster on your birthday! Great views of the Newport harbor, the lobster bar had a rustic feel with live lobsters in a pool-like tank to view. Hubby had the lobster burger, which he enjoyed. I would have liked other spud options liked baked or mashed potatoes instead of french fries, but all they had were rice (did not go with lobster) or slaw. Slaw did not look appetizing. I left on my plate. Located in pretty Bowen's wharf.

Security guard asked my friend where he got the drink he purchased at the bar. Literally took him to the bar to confirm the purchase with the bartender.

Went to Newport for a short getaway weekend. Stopped by cuz we were hungry. The waitress was very courteous and attentive. We've ordered seafood of course (it's by the ocean) and some cocktail. I ordered a cocktail drink and took one sip but really hated the taste of it so I called the waitress and asked her if I can change to another drink since I really hated the taste. She took it and exchanged to another drink for me it was a plus. Very satisfied with her service. Anyway, the seafood was so fresh that you can still taste the ocean water. Definitely will be back on next short getaway.

If you pick between here or the sister restaurant The Landing right next door, you've done well for yourself, It's essentially the same menu, only The Lobster bar contains the Aquidneck Company under it's roof and a year round raw bar, which is the best thing about the place. Affordable, clean and a great staff make this place a favorite of locals and tourists alike and the view directly on Newport Harbor can't be beat. Go with the lobster rolls, chowders or broiled seafood plates/fisherman's platters without hesitation and enjoy a full on icon of a place that knows New England is famous for its seafood and does it right. Make it the culinary highlight of your visit.

Love this place! Super casual and great food!! We enjoyed the cold lobster salad roll and the hot one-- both are delicious!! Their house lobster bisque was amazing!!! My husband liked the hot roll more, but i prefered the cold one- the fresh dill and conservative use of mayo was perfect.

The view, the view, the view. Don't sit inside, even if it is a bit chilly. Bring a sweater and sit on the patio where you can watch the ships sail in and out of the harbor. Service has always been pleasant and the drinks and cocktails are tasty. The bloody mary and mimosa are generally our favorites for an early afternoon treat, but I also enjoy the red grapefruit vodka and cranberry juice cocktail. The clam fritters are everything you could want in clam-ified fried dough. I WILL say: pass on the mussels. We found them quite bland and were disappointed in the size of the mussels. Also, focaccia is really not the right choice for soaking up broth. It just turns to mush. If you're so inclined, on your way in, select your lobster for flash-steaming and take it home after you've finished your clam-fritter appetizer and cocktail.

I loved this place. There's a restaurant on the water, as well as a market where you can buy fresh lobster and other seafood. You can't beat the view from the deck. You're literally on the water - you can see it below you between the floorboards! I had a delicious bloody mary and the fish and chips. It's not cheap, but the food is great and really fresh. The server was very friendly and attentive. I'd definitely go back next time I'm in the area.

Total rip off and worst lobster place This restaurant is in the back of a lobster company so you would think it's a great place for lobster. Instead it's severely overpriced, with waitstaff that screws up your order. And worse of off, gives you a 2 lb lobster that's smaller than it should. Very disappointed and would never come back again!

    (1)
  • Kyle M.

Got the broiled seafood. Terrible. 2 oz piece of cod was lovely, despite the size. 2 tiny scallops that were overcooked to a bubblegum consistency. 2 shrimp weren't bad, but that was it. The sides were gross- rice was mush, and the slaw was doused with enough sesame oil to make it inedible. The service was slow, but the server was wonderful! The view was spectacular. I'd sit at the bar and have oysters, as they were super fresh and delightful, but I would not return for dinner.

Cute decor, friendly staff but food & drinks were average at best and overpriced. Stay clear of the lobster fritters they were very doughy.

Downtown. Great spot on the water. Almost all seats offer a view of the water. Limited seats on the deck and they dont seat groups of four or more. Lobster roles were disappointing and pricey. There was enough meat but it was dry and lacked flavor. 20$ for that lobster roll. My recommendation..go for simple seafood l. You're paying a premium for the location and view.

Kind of sad for the review I'm about to give but I have no choice. The views here are amazing so my boyfriend and I decided to have a drink and apps and sit outside if available. We asked the hostess and she took us to a table that was stuck in a corner but said we didn't have to take it and could wait for the next available. That was thoughtful of her but then it seemed to have gone downhill from there. We told her we would sit at the bar until a table was ready. We did order drinks and the bartender Loyd was really cool!!! We noticed that people who had just walked in were being seated outside before us. We mentioned it to the hostess and she forgot about us. No big deal, we weren't in a rush. She took us to our table which was a perfect one so I'm glad we waited. I understand it was a bit busy and she forgot but she we were also hungry. We decided to order some 6 oysters and a fried clam plate. The oysters were terrible, small and warm and the clam plate was over fried and not worth the $27 we paid for it. $27???!! craziness I was in shock when the bill came over. The waitress was fine, not overly friendly just ok. It stinks that we experienced this because its a cool spot but not sure I will ever go back. Beautiful views and cool bar area - Food and service not the best.

I am giving The Lobster Bar a one star only for the sunset! We ordered a dozen oysters, they were ok, except a few gritty and some were still attached. As far as the meals, my daughter had stuffed shrimp, very mediocre. My son in law and my self had the lobster roll. The roll was stale and the lobster filling was super boring..bland. And served with packaged potatoe chips?!?! I can get Ms Vickies at the deli at home! My mom got a house salad, SLIMEY. And the Lobster Bisque, cold and bland! This place is definately a tourist trap! Big bucks! Stay away!

As far as I'm aware, these are the only true steamers on any menu in Newport...but correct me if I'm wrong. I implore you to. My girlfriend and I did a pretty extensive search, and all we kept running into were littlenecks. But I digress...these steamers were great. I didn't taste one speck of a grain of sand. At $22.00 for a pound, they were a bit pricey, but what they lack in value the restaurant makes up for in setting and scenery. We also tried the lobster fritters, which were a little light on lobster meat. I guess it helps to feel full after spending $75 on apps and 2 beers!!

This place was AWESOME!!! My boyfriend and I come to Newport every year (check previous reviews), and have never seen this place! it's nestled back on the deck, and normally we don't come to the area it's in, so that's probably why we missed it. Anyways, I was DYING for some lobster bisque, so we looked up the menus of surrounding restaurants on Yelp of course, and came across this place. The location is awesome (right on the water) with an open floor plan so you can feel the ocean breeze while you eat. Everyone was really friendly towards us, especially the bar tenders (and they can make a mean drink, let me tell ya). We had checked the menu out before, and while we were waiting to be seated, so we already knew what we wanted. The soup is a VERY generous portion. So we decided on soup and calamari to share. The food came very quickly, and let me tell you, the lobster bisque was to DIE FOR. Some of the best soup I've had in awhile. The calamari was just ok (The Barking Crab has better calamari and dipping sauces), but the soup takes the cake here. Also the drinks were good (frozen mudslides? HELLO), so we will definitely return. Our waitress was nice and friendly, but as other reviews say, they kind of are slow, but I didn't mind since I was in no rush, hence the one star being taken away. I will definitely return to this restaurant come October when I come back, and I will most definitely be enjoying some lobster bisque again.

Fried lobster claws and avocado lobster salad a must try. Oysters were ok not great. Little necks were very good.

Cool, laid back atmosphere. You can check out the fresh catches as well as hundreds of live lobsters and crabs in open-topped tanks provide entertainment. Decent beer selection. Clam sandwich was good, tender pieces of whole clams. Lobster avocado salad featured large chunks of claw but was too rich and creamy as my entree

I found the place through trip advisor and it was one of the rare times when I regret that I relied on this source. The food is overpriced. Really expensive for the quality of experience you get. 12$ for a lobster bisque that they serve in a paper cup?? 26$ for broiled seafood sampler made of 2(!!!) shrimp,2 scallops and a small piece of fish with a handful of rice. Rediculous! The portions are really small! The service is on level of McDonalds! Very inattentive and unprofessional. Simple cleaning of our table before presenting our check or checking on us time to time never happened. The only thing was good is the view. But it is not worth paying the money for dinerlike experience.

A friend recommended that we get lobsters-to-go here. We arrived at lunch time and decided to stay. What a great decision. The tables and plastic chairs were nothing special, but the marina view was nice, and most important, they served up may new favorite lobster roll. Better than the others I had in RI that week and better than the hundreds I had in the Hamptons. And they had steamers! Really great ones. Pricey but delicious.

  • Julia H.

Server was horrible. We asked how a few things were on the menu and he gave us a shoulder shrug as in not that great. The clams were sandy and we ordered 2 bowls of lobster bisque which we never received but had to have taken off the bill. The view and the fish and chips was great though.

Good place for a very casual dinner. We just wanted a couple of lobsters and a drink and this hit the spot. It was a chilly night and the bar is semi-open air, we sat at the bar, surrounded by drunks that were just drinking (and ogling out food) and had a some laughs over dinner. The oyster shooter shouldn't be missed!

  • Mac O.

3.5 stars. Oh, c'mon, party poopers. It's a casual bar, in a fish warehouse, in the resort town of Newport. Why are you expecting fine china or cheap eats? As far back as I can remember, no trip to downtown Newport was complete without a spin through the Aquidneck Lobster Company. Bro and I would stand on tiptoe and peer down into the lobster tanks, incredulous and mesmerized. We'd ogle the gleaming, ice-packed fish while Moms and Pops snapped pics of our chubby pointing fingers. It was a truly fascinating place for two kids from land-locked Dallas. So it's definitely nostalgia that compels me to continue taking spins through Aquidneck Lobster Co. as an adult. This time, tho, I was completely surprised to discover, tucked at the back of the fish house, a brand new bar. So once husband and I cruised the lobster tanks, we bellied up for some local brews and a view of the harbor. The clientele seemed like a mix of tourists and locals -- with the latter outnumbering the former. Folks were enjoying beers and fresh, delicious looking offerings from the raw bar. If we hadn't just eaten lunch, I could have housed a dozen or two oysters myself. All in all, it was a great way to pass a low-key hour or so in a town so amped by visitors Thames Street literally seethes. A nice escape from the typical summer scene.

Bad service and bad food. Will not go back. Too many other good seafood restaurants in the area. Sorry we even went.

Three jumbo shrimp for $10.95? I get that we're on the water and all, and the view is very pretty, but really? Bloody Mary was $9. All in all, I had three shrimp, one cocktail, one beer and I spent $30. Woof.

Me and my fiance were in Newport for the weekend and decided to give this place a try. We checked Yelp and it sounded good. We sat outside on the water during sunset and it was a gorgeous scene. The lobster claws were amazing for appetizers and raw oysters. I ordered the lobsterman platter for $28 and I was disappointed. Everything was fried and small portion on shrimps and lobster, the fish was covered in batter and it was small piece without it. Our bill came out to more than $100 for a burger and pieces of fried seafood!

The service was good and prompt. The food that we all had was also. The place was busy but our food still came out relatively quick. I will go there again.

Took my family from AR to Newport RI to experience the essence of New England. Nothing screams New England like seafood. The Lobster Bar did not disappoint. The oysters are a bit on the small side but were good nonetheless. Get bottled beer over tap, tap is small as well. The lobsters were amazing. Tender and sweet. Not overcooked. Great service, decent prices.

The Lobster Bar may have the best view in downtown Newport. Wander through the stinky fish market all the way to the back and request a seat on the deck on the water. It's beautiful. And the inside of this place is just way too dark, stuffy, and smelly. We ordered a 1&1/2lb lobster, which came with fries and coleslaw and an order of calamari, which could have fed a small army. Everything was great, the service was speedy, and they had a few good beers to choose from.

Food was fresh but zero flavor. Expensive and not good. Worst mussels by far, they stated they were in white broth try water.

The atmosphere is great... it's like a local dive witht the best seafood on the island. Thr clam roll and the hot lobster roll are off the hook!!! Tim the bartender was awesome always there when you need anything!

Right on the water. Wish there were outdoor cocktail tables but you can sit down an eat right on the water. Have only gone for drinks a few times but we just stand along the side outdoors where we can rest our drinks on the railing. Awesome view!

Great seafood platter. We asked for some of it to be grilled since we were sharing, and I don't love fried fish. They were accommodating and got us seared scallops and grilled shrimp. Gorgeous view and breeze.

Great place for seafood...the lobster was delicious and the fish and chips were awesome! Both had great flavor and were thoroughly enjoyed. Otherwise, the slaw was not that great...kind of bland. The Cesar salad was wimpy, with limp lettuce and no zing. We sat outside, which was beautiful since it's right on the water. Our table was way too close to the other tables around us and we sat in plastic chairs. Our server was flaky and unimpressive. I honestly hope she was new, because she sucked. For the price we paid for our food, I would have expected higher quality overall. Again, great seafood but could use improvement in other areas.

I had the hot lobster roll; buttery, warm, savoury, loaded with lobster claws, AMAZING! He had the fried whole belly clams (and I did too); tender, barely battered, they tasted like they had their last meal just seconds before they landed on the table. Oh yeah, we'll be going back really soon.

We have been coming to this place forever, but before it had a bar/restaurant. We affectionately called this place the "Lobster Zoo". Great idea to put in a bar/restaurant. Great deck outback to sit and eat/drink. Lovely when the sun is out. Fantastic drinks, clam chowder, and lobster bisque.

Had the most amazing lobster bisque and calamari, together with a gorgeous sunset view. Definitely worth visiting!

$25 for about a half pint of fishy tasting whole belly Ipswich clams and fries is very, very, very steep. There are no words for fishy seafood when you're located on the same pier as a seafood market. Pretty views though.

Very embarrassed . Tried this place with out of town guests. Spent $20 each for lobster rolls. Bun was not grilled and lobster filling was tasteless. Had to pay $2.50 more for fries. Don't waste your time or money. If you want a good lobster roll for less money go almost anywhere else on Aquidneck Island- The Mooring, Atlantic Grille, First Beach, Brick Alley Pub, even Panera! Service was friendly and good and setting is nice if you are seated on the deck. Agree with others that lobster prices are way out of line for this setting. Fried food that others had looked greasy.

The food was amazing. The view was like looking at heaven. Our server wrapped us in a lap blanket, she must have ESP, she brought us everything we needed, before we could ask. She offered us so many wonderful things to see and do on the island and we thank her for her humor and laughter, she made us feel like we had been friends forever. On our next trip to Newport, our first stop will be The Lobster Bar to visit Wendy, and have one of her fabulous hot lobster rolls. Thank you again Wendy, for making Newport our favorite vacation of all time.

Solid new seafood joint - might even rival the old Christies. Here on the first night of full service and they're doing great. I'm impressed and will definitely be back. Great clam fritters, great lobster bisque, great lobster. Could probably use to serve food on regular plates/bowls instead of paper but otherwise highly recommended.

The lobster roll was amazing. I had the Caesar salad with the lobster on top. There was tons of lobster on top. We also had the broiled seafood platter, it was as good. There is a great view, your Right on the water. You can eat outside our inside. Enjoy!

This place was fantastic! Born and raised in Newport I was excited to try this new restaurant when visiting my parents for a weekend. They did not disappoint. Service: Originally we were told it was going to be an hour and a half wait for 4 but they sat us within 45 minutes on the deck. The waitress was attentive and sweet, keeping us informed of when things would be coming out and getting drinks quickly. The bottles of wine were quite cheap for a restaurant in Newport. Food: The seafood was all so fresh and delicious and I thought the prices were quite reasonable for what you were getting. Everything is served in plastic or metal dishes so if that's not your thing you should head to a different spot for dinner. Atmosphere: The restaurant itself is a fish market/wharf. The attire is casual and you will be sat either inside or out (we luckily snagged an outside table). You can't beat the sunset view of the harbor and bridge! Overall you should check this place out for a relaxing dinner after a day at the beach!

Had the lobster roll. The bun was bigger than the standard hot dog bun and they gave a generous portion of lobster. It was really tasty. As for decor, not much to it. Our drinks came in plastic disposable cups. I felt like we were at a take out place.

Step 1: Lobster comes off boat. Step 2: Lobster goes in lobster roll. Step 3: Lobster roll goes in your mouth. The end. If you want delicious, fresh seafood, I can't think of anywhere you're more likely to get it than the back of a fish market. We sat on the deck overlooking the water - it was freezing, but they offered us fleece blankets to warm us up. We decided soup would be more efficient and shared a New England clam chowder and lobster bisque. Both were delicious, perfectly portioned, and reasonably priced. Then: the lobster rolls. These are serious, serious lobster rolls. Giant rolls - like hotdog buns on steroids. Lightly grilled bread. Huge chunks of lobster, including whole claws. Lightly dressed, not too much mayo. And oh-so-delicious. You'll get a pickle and a bag of chips to go with 'em, but don't even bother. Your mouth has more important things to do!

Amazing views! And entertaining watching the fish in the water. I couldn't believe how great the food was. I was expecting a fish fry restaurant, so I was thrilled with the great selection to choose from.

We went there for dinner on a weekday this summer and the place was packed. Our request for an outdoor seating took 20 minutes and it was nice to have dinner by the water, watching sunset. Just wish that they included the option of serving salad/fries etc along with the sandwiches, than just serving potato chips. That said, I'd go there again and again!

  • Sheila T.

Alas, our third trip to the Lobster Bar was just like the other 2. First, great location and a good drink. Second, the food is mediocre. Pricey. I will never get over a bag of potato chips to go with a Clam Plate Market Price. Have to pay to upgrade to french fries. So, I changed my order to fish and chips to get fries. It was greasy and the fish was undercooked. Each time we bring out of town guests and are embarrased by the food. There are so many great restaurants in Newport they should be doing a better job. After all, seasoned, well established restauranteurs own this place with a couple other of their other restaurants close by! It should all be great to go with the location and the pricing. Good service helps..

This place is new this year and wow what a gem. It has a gritty, true seafood market feel...no really, you can buy your fresh seafood here, so you know you're getting only the best. I always ask to be seated outside because the views are amazing, also they give you lap blankets if you get chilly, which I love because I'm always cold! I always order the hot lobster roll because it is my favorite in newport...big bun, tons of big chunks of lobster, and warm butter. I recommend upgrading to the fries, they're very yummy and great consistency. For apps, their caesar is delicious and the crab and artichoke dip is ridiculous. They give you a good amount of it and my friend and I polished it off. If you're looking for a casual atmosphere, attentive service, and great food this is the place! Make sure to take a pic with their lobster outside, very fun!

  • Robert J.

Great View. Service was ok. We ordered some clams as an appetizer. Had to send them back because they were sandy. The waitress said they usually are sandy and if we want clams without sand to order littleneck clams! Haha. That is hilarious. So we did. They were better. Still not that great. No sand though! Lobster Bisque tasted like butter with a little lobster flavoring. Not much of a wine selection. But the lobster was great! That was really the only saving grace for them. With all the other restaurants around I wouldn't go again.

Prices are a little high but omg the K1 oyster shooter is yumm yumm! The steamed little neck app is to die for! Ask for Benny the bar tender, he's the best!

Have a John Daly. The food was good, but not great. Since this was our first lobster roll we got one hot and one cold. They were both good but neither knocked my socks off. And for the price ($19 each), I expected more. The cucumber salad with the shrimp cocktail added was delicious. And so were the John Daly's!

Well, I guess I'm going to make my review for The Lobster Bar as easy to decipher as possible. Because sometimes folks like me just want a quick take and make an informed decision where to eat. So here goes: PROS: Authentic - If you're visiting from the midwest, for example, the rustic front entrance, fish tanks and nautical bar gives that 'Fisherman's Wharf ' kind of ambiance. However, if you're from this area as we are, it's not going to exactly enthrall you. Been there, seen that. Views - No question, the restaurant has phenomenal views of the harbor and boat traffic sometimes only 100 yards from your table. Clearly, this is a selling point. Waitstaff - OK, friendly and competent. But don't expect personal insights into daily specials or menu options. We saw mostly college kids working the tables. Few adult waiters. Customers - My sense was that the place was full of mainly tourists. Quick table turnovers. I didn't see many presumed locals at the bar or tables engaged in conversation with the bartender or waitstaff. If the locals don't go there very much, that usually says something ... CONS: Oh yeah, the food. I will give it just a 'very average' rating. While the restaurant will hook you in for the views and authentic ambience, the food will leave you pretty disappointed. Let's face it, clam chowder is always a draw at these places. So, you'd think they'd nail it, right? Wrong. Our collective bowls of chowder were creamy but offset with a really heavy dose of salt added. Hmmm. I can't say where the actual clams were, but I only tasted tiny nuggets of something... The next big draw is typically Lobster Rolls, right? Well, these had meat that was very cold, giving the impression that they were recently frozen and came out of the kitchen walk-in. Not fresh. How could that be if the restaurant trades in fresh lobster and located practically in Newport harbor? My dinner companions had different dishes, but the collective opinion was that everything tasted a bit manufactured and bland, probably assuming that the tourists, the restaurant's prime customer, wouldn't know the difference. My last comment is that for what you get, the Lobster Bar was surprisingly expensive... BOTTON LINE: If you seek great views and wish to experience the bustling Newport harbor, then the Lobster Bar is your ticket. An expensive one none the less. I would also say that the restaurant is probably a good choice for out-of-town non finicky eaters. However, if you are looking for a genuinely enjoyable seafood experience - that will be truly memorable - then I would pass this venue by and search out some of the other Newport restaurant offerings. Hey, I told you this final review would be short ... !

This bar/restaurant is at the end of the Aquidneck Lobster Company, where the fish come in all day long. We ate here for lunch and the food was wonderful. We had the lobster and shrimp crepe with a gorgonzola cream sauce over it. It was full of lobster and shrimp and a bit of sauce over it, but not overpowering. Others had a hamburg and the scallops. I think it was a little pricey for lunch, but was absolutely delicious. The service was great and we sat on the deck over the water. Absolutely perfect.

Decided to try The Lobster Bar based on the Yelp rating/reviews. It was a Thursday evening around 6:30 pm, busy but not crowded. My friend and I were seated immediately but it took the waitress about 10 minutes before coming to our table. My friend ordered a cup of the Lobster Bisque "bar" style where they added chunks of lobster and the grilled shrimp appetizer for her dinner. I ordered the lobster roll with fries and the house salad with blue cheese dressing (which oddly, they were out of so I settled for the ceasar dressing on the side). My salad and my friend's bisque were served first. The salad was nothing to rave about - standard mixed field greens, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and marinated artichokes served in a wooden bowl ($8) and my friend's bisque came served in a paper take-out container. For $12, I commented to her that I would at least expect it to be served in a real bowl. She said the bisque was delicious and they generously added chunks of lobster. Our meals arrived before we finished our starters. My friend enjoyed the grilled shrimp which was served atop a red slaw which she thoroughly enjoyed. My lobster roll was served on a warm, buttered roll generously filled with claw and tail meat, light mayo and dill, which my friend did not prefer but it didn't bother me. Our overall tab, without drinks totaled $54 without tip. We would definitely return but given the variety of restaurants that surround this one, we probably wouldn't wait very long if there were a wait. Worth a try!

I guess that there are two places to review here, the bar and the restaurant. The crowd was lively and the drinks were good. I had a dark & stormy and a corona rita. The bar is actually on the pier, look between your feet, between the boards and you can see the water.

Delicious!!! The clam chowder was excellent, as was my salmon entree. The wine selection was impressive, and moderately priced. Wait staff was attentive, and service was very quick. Location overlooking the water was beautiful.

Spent a night in Newport and didn't want something too fancy or too expensive. I thought the service felt like a fast food restaurant. Beautiful view of the harbor out on the back deck. Had the hot lobster roll which wasn't what I expected it to be at all. NO TASTE and the lettuce tasted and looked like cooked spinach. A bit too pricey for the service, atmosphere, and food. Might go back.....but probably not. (Exact same menu at the restaurant next door - The Landing).

IN LOVE. Super rustic, awesome staff, great mudslides, and an ever better view! To all those people hatin' on the paper plates, get over yourselves. It's a rustic bar IN a lobster co, not a fine dining establishment. Enjoy the atmosphere and the super fresh seafood. :)

It's been a while since I posted a review on Yelp...time to do some catch-up! Visited Newport for a short (read: 1 night), anniversary based vacation with my wife. For our special dinner, we decided to focus on fun and the wonderful views. Also, our late stage planning of this weekend getaway meant that options were somewhat limited (tip: Don't wait until Friday to book a weekend reservation during summer in Newport)...Heard that The Landing met our criteria and they had reservations available, but when we got threre...we deemed it a little too much fun. Right next door though is The Lobster Bar, which is a little further out on the pier and a little quieter than our original offering. I also read that they don't take advanced reservations, so perhaps we can squeeze into a table on the outdoor deck. If you read up on the place, you will find it has been a fish market for forever, but more recently converted a portion of the property to a restaurant. So you'll walk in past a very fishy smelling market area before making it to bar / seating. Fine by me as I know that everything will be fresh and tasty. Hostess said we would have to wait 20 minutes (no problem!) and we were seated in less than 10 for a Saturday evening (awesome!) Seated on a small deck overlooking the harbor and able to watch the sunset and the outdoor breezes. We ordered clam fritters to start. Would rate them OK. Two nice pieces of clam in each fritter...Not a big fritter guy myself anyway, but had no issues enjoying them. We ordered the 'Lobster Bar Raw Bar' platter...$94, but we had a full chilled lobster, 8 jumbo shrimp, 16 oysters (Bluepoints and locals), and 8 clams...So impressive, I had to snap a picture and send to friends and family (who were jealous!) In order to stay through the end of the sunset, we ordered a slice of key lime pie which ended the meal perfectly. Service was friendly and snappy. Never waiting for anything and not paced too quickly to rush us out either. Very happy with the impromptu switch here and would come back in a heartbeat. If you're looking for a fun, casual spot for fresh seafood and a gorgeous view of the harbor, you can't go wrong here...

Although this restaurant has spectacular views of Newport harbor from its outside tables, the food and drinks are not worthy. Surprisingly the fish that we had was not very fresh, the portion was very small, and the chef showed no creativity in the cooking.Even the French fries were soggy. They also do not know how to make a proper martini. If they wish to compete in the Newport restaurant scene they should pay a lot more attention to what they serve their customers.

Love the view and glad to have another waterfront spot for drinks here in town but the crowd can get a little douchey in the summer. Haven't tried the food yet but have heard mixed reviews. Stick with an ice cold bottled Landshark and snag a spot outside for a good time!

Spent a beautiful weekend in Newport, Rhode Island last week with my wife. We went for a two hour sailing excursion on The Aquidneck, a two masted schooner taking in the beautiful weather and sights around Narragansett Bay. At the end of the tour, one of the crew members, Sebastian, told us that if we had any questions as to where to go for lunch, just ask him. Well, with our hunger kicking in after all that sea air, I asked him where we could go to get a good meal. He recommended The Lobster Bar right at the end of the pier and told us to order the lobster rolls. Even though it was packed, we were seated after a short 15 minute wait at a table next to the water with a beautiful view of the yachts and sailboats. Following Sebastian's advice, we ordered the hot lobster rolls. When our server, Gretchen brought them over ten to fifteen minutes later, I thought we died and went to lobster heaven! The rolls were bursting with lobster meat from the tails to the claws. Fantastic flavor! I have somewhat of a healthy appetite, but at one point I was wondering if I could finish the entire roll. All this for $19.99! Definitely well worth it between the top-notch service, the ambiance and especially the food! Next time we go to Newport, The Lobster Bar will be on our itinerary!

This is old school Newport. Don't come here if you want decor don't come here for French service. You come here after a day at the beach with sand and salt in your hair. Pound back some beers and steamers and call it a wrap.

Primo views and a good vibe. This summer, The Lobster Bar has been one of my go-to's when I want a gorgeous view to accompany my alcoholic beverage. Compared to many of the other spots on the harbor that can't open on a rainy day, this place has floor to ceiling windows that allow you the view without the wet factor. The staff is friendly and I've always had a good time!

  • constance p.

Plastic cups for wine and paper cups for water are gross. Also had paper plates. Have these people never heard of environmental responsibility? Food was decent but was overshadowed by the irresponsibility. When I asked my server about it she told me the kitchen was not big enough to do dishes. Maybe the owners should take a trip to New York and see how hundreds of restaurants wash dishes in far less space.

  • AllyMay N.

Service was great. My $6 clam chowder was delicious but only about 1/2 a cup in a to- go paper cup. Also my $25 meal which consisted of my "white mexican shrimp" was presented to me on a paper/ plastic tray! Very very very disappointed for the price!!! Get some glass plates!!! I'm sticking to the landing!!!

Worst clam chowder I've had in 30 years. It tasted like it was from an 89 cent can from the grocery store. The prices (for beer and soup) were disgustingly high. Although the outdoor seating was beautiful, it was empty upon our visit yet because we only ordered beer and soup, we were not 'allowed' to sit outside. I will certainly not be returning to this restaurant.

    (1)
  • Kellysue H.

Way over priced and not very good food. If I do try it again I would just sit at the raw bar and try that. The service was good though as well as the view.
