Excellent staff and fine tight menu. Went here with friends during a quick trip to Newport in wintertime. The place was warm and welcoming despite it being a Sunday evening. The wait staff were very friendly. The menu is a single page, as the specials are constructed on apparently a daily basis. The result was a lot of attention to the food. I had an excellent seafood dinner, and my hosts swore by the burgers and pizzas as well. So the place can be casual food or high end food depending on one's mood. The dessert and after-dinner drink selection was excellent as well. Highly recommended.

The owner of the Fifth Element is tending bar at The Mooring while the new building is being fitted out. They have plans to open in March 2010 across Broadway from the Salvation Cafe. Sounds like it's going to be a good place, with prices to cater to the locals, not the tourists. Mark your calendars!

Fifth Element never fails to deliver. At the lower end of Thames, it's hidden away from the tourists. It in no way shape or form resembles the majority of bars on Thames. It's very swank for Newport. And you will see that people of all ages enjoy the atmosphere. The downstairs boasts a high bar with unique lighting and a water fall. Along the back wall there are tables for additional seating and TV's with football/basketball/baseball playing. The bartenders are extremely personable. They aren't college girls and guys just trying to bring the money in. They are professionals and I think that's why a lot of locals make Fifth Element a regular spot. If you want a cool setting away from the tourist traffic then look no further. You won't be disappointed and you won't want to leave. **Girls ask the bartender for a Vagina drink and make the symbol with your middle and index finger. You think it's sounds crazy, but it's delicious. I won't tell you what's in it. See for yourself!

Update July 2012...was persuaded by friends to try The Fifth Element again and I'm glad I did. It's a different restaurant from last Fall. first, the menu is way expanded from before. Many more choices, not too adventurous but appealing nonetheless. My friends and I split the Elements Salad, a burger, fish tacos, mussels, and the pizza of the day...not a bad item among them although the pizza of the day didn't compare well to the other, more flavorful items. Fish tacos were EXCELLENT, and that's a big plus as I miss Rubio's in San Diego. So I'll go back now, what a relief. ************************** Old review from fall 2011 Very cool set-up, spacious and open, with huge windows that seem to bring the street into the restaurant. A very nice change from some of the more 'claustophobic' Newport restaurants. That said, the menu is surprisingly lack-luster. Went with a group of four and had, among us, a pizza (ho-hum), brook trout (bland but with a very bizarre salad with crab, arugula, and strange dressing...I'm a fan of crab but let this one go), and a cod special that our friends RAVED about. So there was a bright spot. Service was just fine. No complaints there. But there was nothing here to recommend or to lure me back.

Great bar, excellent food! Food is very fresh, has very clean flavors and is well executed. Best Guiness pour in Newport!

Great atmosphere and even better drinks! They have a DJ and dance floor as well. Hop on over to salvation across the street either before or after! Great combo. I highly recommend this place!

Food was great and I loved the vibe of the restaurant. The beef shoulder was really good, the bbq salmon was decent (I'm not a huge fan of salmon in general, so this isn't a reflection on them). My date absolutely loved the jalepeno spoonbread. It tended to be a younger crowd at 9pm when we got there, definitely would recommend going back.

The entrees were a little more expensive then I was expecting ($19-30). My girlfriend and I each ordered a drink and the muscles. The muscles were one if the best I've had. We were both not impressed with our waiter. Payed very little attention to us and was not very friendly. Would like to come back to this place with more money to spend and maybe have a few cocktails. I noticed they had a scotch selection as well.

The Fifth Element is one of my favorite restaurants in Newport. I can't wait to go back this summer. We went there at least once a week, if not more, for either dinner and/or drinks and every time we went the people who worked there were friendly, welcoming, and the service was always excellent. The downstairs has a cool bar area with a wall of booths with high top tables that make for great people watching while you enjoy your dinner/drinks. Upstairs are tables for dining. They have delicious pizzas, their steak is actually great (and I usually don't order steak if it's not at a steak joint) and the specials are almost always delicious. It can get packed during happy hour or if the sox are playing someone interesting, but mostly with locals as far as I could tell. I'll see you there this summer.

My husband and I are visiting from Boston, MA and were looking for a place to eat dinner. Originally we walked down to eat at Tuckers, but when we got there, it was no longer in business. Thank God across the street was The Fifth Element. With nothing else around us, we went in. It truly was God who brought us there. The food was AMAZING, and I am a huge food snob (ask my husband). We got the mussels as appetizers and they we SO GOOD! Huge plate filled with them with three pieces of bread that were even better. I ordered the stake and my husband the Mahimahi special. WOW!!! They were both so good! And then came the dessert!!! Just when I didn't think it could get better, we were both blown away by the Toffee Pudding. We ate it in less then 3 minutes. Nothing was to heavy and just tasted so good. Usually I adjust my dish my added salt or pepper, but I didn't even think about adding or changing anything to it. Really, stop your search and go here. It casual, yet romanticy if you don't want to dress all up but still have a nice date or dinner with friends. The bad part of it all??? We live over 80 miles away :( If I ever get pregnant again, my poor husband will be driving 4 hours (2 there and 2 to come back) every night just for the toffee pudding. AMAZING!!!

on the lower end of Thames, this is the place to be seen. (across from the drive up atm) Raging from 21-45, the first floor with hightops, tabletops, bar and open air kitchen; the elements come to life! They have a second floor and a mini lounge that can fit up to 12 people with their own tv and service. food is great, always try the specials! Music is loud and pumping with DJs on particular nights. Bartenders are great, fast, smooth and always exude service. Reservations can be taken which I recommend. It can get packed but always a great time Maybe I'm a little bias here cuz I used to work here but coming from a person behind the scenes, you can take it from me, you have to stop in!

The appetizer (mussel or clams) in a spicy sauce was outstanding, however, the main course was not so great. I ordered the burger and the meat was so salty that I barely ate it.

  • Jonathan L.

The atmosphere was eclectic yet cozy. The menu is small but tasty, the open kitchen is an added flare. The drink prices are also affordable. On the weekends they have a DJ and open up for dancing.

Great to see the Fifth reopened after two long years of being closed. New broadway location is larger with a great bar and an open kitchen. Some of the old favorites on the menu as well as some new additions that look great. Bistro steak is fantastic at $20 and sticky toffee pudding is my favorite dessert. Wine list is expanded but most are still in the $30-40 range. Staff is fantastic and Fifth is always a great night out. They are also doing a Sunday brunch with live jazz!

I have now been here twice, once over the summer(craziness) and once in mid April (so much less crowded). My boyfriend and I have come for the brunch and dinner. I had the best bloody Mary with brunch along with great French toast. Dinner was amazing salmon for him and a good salad for me. Spinach balls are a must have!

  • M R.

Went on a Saturday night. Wanted a less touristy place, was not disappointed. Very nice crowd, pleasant ambiance and a bartender that knows his stuff. Also, try the toffee pudding! Spent a couple of hours hanging out at the bar, had a great time. Will definitely go again next time I'm in Newport

The place was very trendy and the prices reasonable, however the rest went down hill. The food was subpar and the service way below that. We waited to put our drink order in, then waited to put our appetizer order in and then waited even more and much longer for them to take our entree order. We were there well over an hour before they even took our entree order. Overall I would not recommend this restaurant for anything more than drink.

We had been to the Fifth Element for dinner and had a very pleasant experience, so we decided to go for a celebration brunch for me finishing the Newport Naval Triathlon earlier in the morning. We ordered drinks, appetizers and our entrees all at the same time. The drinks came out quickly, appetizers came out timely as well. Then we waited an unreasonably long time for our entrees (three sandwiches and an omelette) and were told it would be coming out shortly. We continued to wait then we finally asked for our bill after having been there for about an hour and 15 minutes, still having not received our entrees. Other tables that had arrived after us were being served and we could surely find another restaurant kitchen in Newport that could put a couple of sandwiches and eggs together in under an hour. As we were leaving the waitress told us that it took so long because we ordered appetizers, which didn't make sense as we ordered them at the same time as our entrees. She also claimed that the other parties arrived before us, which wasn't true. So after she called us liars and blamed our food not coming out because we ordered appetizers, we paid for our drinks and appetizers and left, never will go back. Ever.

I haven't spent a lot of time in Newport, but it was clear that really fine food (in the sense of great ingredients, clear flavors, creative combinations and superb taste) was going to be tough to find. Fortunately, I found Fifth Element through Yelp and was not disappointed. I don't give out five stars much, so these four reflect great tastes, really good service, and a comfortable atmosphere. We asked to sit upstairs to get away from the TV downstairs (everyplace seems to have them) and found a quiet, calm space with good music. We ordered an assortment of starters that were delicious -- the mussels were fantastic, the crab cakes among the best I've had, and only the chickpea flour fritters were drab. Our waiter's advice was spot-on, and the beers on tap were great. Price was really reasonable, especially there. We went on a Sunday night, so I imagine it's more crowded at other times. Note that parking in that area is a racket if you don't have a permit. Better to walk if you can, or pay the $10 and stop circling.

I like this place. Its nice but not so nice you feel that you really need to dress well. I had the beef and it was excellent. Even the mashed Potato's came out excellent. Simple things made much better.

We are spending one week in Newport on vacation and we had worst experience at this restaurant. We booked a reservation based on the reviews from yelp and google for 6 adults and one child Monday night. We arrived at 7pm and were seated promptly by the hostess. Restaurant was almost empty except a few customers at the bar. We ordered a few appetizers and drinks. It took a while for the entry to come. I ordered steak filet, asked for medium well done. Steak came rare, and one piece of meat was dropped on the table from the plate by the waitress. She was apologetic and promised to bring a replacement piece which never came. I sent the rare meat back and had to ask twice, when it would come back since everyone else was almost finished eating. Got the bill, mandatory 20% tips were added on the bill, also was charged 7% tax on the tips. When I questioned about the tips and tax on the tips, a manager was called. This is the rudest, most unapologetic man I ever encountered in hospitality industry. During the whole conversation, he never apologized for the uncooked meat, delayed service, could not explain the tax charge ( he just kept repeating : this is the law, state law and federal law ). He also refused to reduce the 20% tip based on bad experience. Will never recommend to anyone and go back. By the way, there is a Hawaiian style restaurant right across the street, much better!!

Service was mysterious, no idea who server, busser or hostess were and visited the table rarely. Food was tolerable. Polenta was gritty and had no flavor. Pricy for the quality. Not impressed or happy.

I'll admit to planning dinner here based about 90% on the name alone (one of my favorite movies) and 10% on the Yelp reviews. no multipass needed here! while Jean Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg is not here to demand a case with four stones in it as your entry fee, the food, drinks, and atmosphere are excellent. considering that two meals of mine that day consisted of some sort of meat/egg/cheese sandwich, I switched things up with a salad. okay, it had pancetta and goat cheese, but still, it was quite the salad. the creamy tomato soup helped warm my stomach on a chilly New England night. I sampled the quinoa pumpkin pancakes that Caroline ordered - they were similar to latkes but not as greasy. the dranks here - potent! my dark and stormy could start a fire. but it was well-mixed! prices are fair and service was fast and friendly. the trendy-casual scene was welcoming and warm, in contrast to the weather outside. freeze those knees, my chickadees!

We had dinner here on a Saturday night and they were oddly quiet. And we couldn't totally figure out why. The service was prompt and efficient, if a little bland. The menu has lots to offer and the interior is fresh and modern. The biggest issue I had was that when our food came out, mostly cooked fish dishes, most of them were warm at best. But everything was tasty! No bad, we'd go back.

There are a plethora of restaurants in newport, ri so I took to yelp and open table to pick a place. We decided to go off the beaten path but not too far off and check out this place. The space is huge and decorated with a bit of an Asian motif. Our reservation was on the earlier side so only about a handful of patrons were enjoying the bar area. We were seated in the main dining area. To start we ordered the roasted oysters. Four large oysters were part if the appetizer. The sauce had a nice flavor of garlic. Our main dish was the grilled bistro filet. Four perfectly cooked slices of meat along with mashed potatoes and some greens were presented to us. Service was great. food very good. Decor average. No dessert but if we ever go back, maybe. If downtown newport is too crazy, consider driving a few blocks away to try this place.

Dined here last evening on the first night of our anniversary weekend. Food was excellent, service was questionable! We felt like we were an inconvenience to the server, she had little personality, never even told us the specials, in fact we didn't even know there were specials until we overheard her telling the table next to us as we were preparing to leave. Just a shoddy representation for us on our first and probably last visit....unfortunate too because the food really was excellent! Service is key folks, no matter how good the food may be.

There are few times in life when a meal is superbly crafted in every possible respect. This was not one of those times, but the mussels were really good and the gin and tonic was superb. One if the best I've ever had. Wonderful ambience too, with open windows on the passing scene and a great soul music soundtrack. Wonderful evening!

This is the second time I have dined at The Fifth Element. The first time there was fantastic live Jazz. That was a Sunday evening. There was no music on Friday, but the food was great. There is something on the menu for everyone. We ordered the mussels both times. They are delicious. The staff were very helpful but not hovering. We will go back again.

I didn't get a chance to frequent The Fifth Element much over the summer, as the bar side is usually rather busy on the weekends (and even some weeknights). So it was a pleasure to be reminded last night of what a great place this is. One side of the restaurant is dedicated to table service, while the other half offers a large bar, several high top tables, couches, and a few large booths. I very much enjoy the ambiance here... rustic charm, yet clean and modern... even when the bar is packed this place feels open. Especially in the summer when they open up the front windows. I love that the kitchen is open facing the bar.. I enjoy watching them do their thing. They have a pretty solid cocktail and martini menu... The cucumber martini here is one of my favorite drinks in town. Everything I have ordered off the food menu (which changes seasonally) has been delicious. I did notice that menu was much longer on this visit than any previous ones. Last night my boyfriend and I shared the spinach balls... they were delicious little balls of savory goodness. I usually can not be swayed from ordering the steamed mussels here... the tomato broth has the perfect amount of spiciness and even the grilled bread is on point. Brunch here is wonderful as well, and they usually have a live jazz band in house. They even have a yummy selection of hot toddys. My favorite times to go here are early evenings and Sunday Brunch. However, if you are looking for more of a nightlife scene, definitely check this place out after 8:00. Many nights they even have a DJ or band in house. Usually a great looking crowd.

Disclaimer: We had initially come here for dinner, but after seeing the menu, we only got drinks. I have wanted to try this for a while, as Broadway is my new obsession. We came in, all pretty hungry. The decor is funky and artsy, new age. It has big colored lantern balls that illuminate the dining room, or you can sit in a bar area. We chose the bar so we could be by the window. They certainly pay attention to detail, with a cool waterfall behind the bar, and a really neat fire to cook in, but also adds some great aesthetic decor. There also were small vases with single plants in them, which I really appreciate. They had a great lounge area with cozy couches, that looked like a great spot for a SATC reunion. They also had a large projector, which i imagine is for sports games. The menu did look very appealing, we just were looking for certain staples that they did not have. I do want to come back and try the food, but with this menu, you need to be ready to "Explore" (ie, liver mousse), or to "Settle" (burger or pizza).

hostess Amy discriminates against service dogs. Even though it is black and white illegal to do so : ada.gov/qasrvc.htm This place should lose its liquor license for Discriminating against a cancer support dog while causing liver disease with booze and tap water served as drinking water. Here is a list of carcinogens from the govt allowed in the tap: oehha.ca.gov/prop65/prop… Restaurants, especially ones of this "quality" should be reverse osmosis filtering the water and ice they serve the community. But they don't. Its not even regulated by rhode island health. I can taste the chlorine. At least add a lime... geez

Visited this restaurant at 7pm on a Thursday in July. There were two other tables out of about ten occupied.while the drinks are great, the food is delicious, the wait staff was accommodating and nice, the contemporary decor and music don't fit well with the brown paper table tops and extremely casual clientele. I would visit this restaurant again based on its food quality however I would choose sandals and shorts instead of an attempt at a romantic dinner with my husband.

Super fun place! Came here on a Saturday night and there was a band playing. They have big windows that are usually open, giving the place a nice, airy, open feel. Windows get closed around 10p (noise ordinance I'm assuming). They have some interesting drinks here; I got something reminiscent of an Arnold Palmer, but the alcoholic version (iced tea vodka + lemonade?) DELICIOUS! My Boo and I were staying at a B&B off the beaten path and was really glad we did, otherwise we prob wouldn't have explored Broadway at all. Nice to be away from the crowds of Thames St.

My best friend didn't want an ordinary bridal shower, she wanted more of a cocktail party and I couldn't have imagined a better place than The Fifth Element. The owners, Frank and Brad, went above and beyond on every account to make sure everything was perfect. The sangria was fabulous, the food delicious and the overall ambiance second to none. Their rustic, shabby chic decor is awesome and the huge sliding glass doors added additional charm to our party. I highly recommend them for any type of private function, dinner or just an ice cold beer. Thanks guys!!

Never actually ate here but I've heard great things about it, this is a "night-out" type of review. Went with a bunch of my girlfriends for drinks and definitely want to go back. The design inside is not typical Newport. The bar and dance floor are sectioned off from one another so if you just want to sit and chill by the bar you can do so. The DJ was great the night we went and played a lot of our favorites. The drinks are also moderately priced and strong for how much you pay for. Go with a good crew!

My wife and I ate here on Saturday night. It was surprisedly calm and we were seated immediately without prior reservations. We sat in the bar area, which was a nice atmosphere. Our waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and drink selection. My wife had a salad to start, it was fresh and tasty and delivered promptly. I had the Kibbeh; I wasn't impressed as it left something to be desired. For the main course, my wife had the corn quinoa cakes and I had the seared salmon. My wife's cakes were a little crispy on the bottom from being cooked a little too long. The cake itself was a weird texture of corn and a quinoa paste. This paste like texture actually made it difficult to eat because it got stuck in every crevice of her mouth. My salmon was cooked perfectly. However, the jalapeno bread with corn was overpowered by the taste of tomato juice. This is probably taste specific, as I don't care too much for overpowering tomato flavor, so I only at the fish. All in all the staff and atmosphere is great, but with all the truly delicious restaurants in town, we won't be going back as the food at the 5th Element was mediocre at best.

They had a live band when I went and I enjoyed it. The musicians were very skillful and engaged with the audience. It is a good place to meet new middle age people or meet up with friends and have a few cocktails. The food was good. The bartender handled the flow of customers well and ensured everyone was served in a timely manner.

The Fifth Element offers a modern, continental cuisine that is very appropriately priced and great tasting. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and is located on Broadway Ave, not right downtown on Thames or America's Cup with the rest of the tourist traps like The Red Parrot. The Fifth has a well rounded menu that is sure to satisfy most everyones cravings when dining out for any given occasion.

Last weekend, I visited The Fifth Element with a group of friends to kick off a bachelorette party. We were thrilled to find a place that was able to accommodate our large reservation at the last minute, and in such a perfect location near our hotel and all the Newport nightlife! The atmosphere of this place was also really cool - kind of trendy but not stuffy like many places in Newport can be. We all ordered off of the appetizer and pizza menus as opposed to the entrees. I will say the entree menu was a bit disappointing. But the food most certainly was not. I was able to sample a few different things: the Margherita pizza, which was delicious with its perfectly crispy thin crust, the Element Salad with goat cheese, asparagus and pancetta (YUM! I cleaned my plate of this one!) and the Mussels, which I made a very valiant effort to polish off and unfortunately failed. The mussels were in a spicy tomato broth with spicy sausage mixed in, and they were some of the best mussels I've ever had. I would go back just for those! We were also thrilled with the promptness with which we were seated, our drinks and food was delivered, and the great and friendly service that was provided to us at Fifth Element. Not to mention that we got 2 free toffee puddings for dessert for the bachelorette party, which had I not eaten so many mussels I'm sure I would have enjoyed MUCH more as I heard they were divine. I will most likely be back to The Fifth Element for another night in Newport in the future!

Walked in and right away, it was BEAUTIFUL. The decor is modern, but artsy at the same time - upcycled is a good word. Anyways, the food: Let me start off with the burger, which my roommate got and it not only LOOKED good, but it was the best burger she ever had ( I agree). I had the lamb kebob, which I substituted the olives and radishes with romaine hearts. I made a lamb kebob salad with it and a wrap. Every bite was like heaven. It was perfect. Another one of us had the mussels. I'll take her word that it was delicious (I'm not a shellfish fan). I don't usually give five stars, but I think The Fifth Element really deserves it. The food is great, decor is great. Nothing else to really say. Stop by on Broadway.

I really want to like this restaurant more but the food is just simply underwhelming. The service is excellent and everything from the facade to the light fixtures create an awesome atmosphere. The menu is exciting , the presentation is beautiful, but the lack of seasoning makes all eight menu items I have tried bland and ordinary at best. I'll return for cocktails but will not visit the menu again.

Newport is chockablock with gastropubs and watering holes, and The Fifth Element offers everything one would need for a satisfying time on the Newport town. Our margarita's were absolutely delicious and the bartenders definitely know what they are doing. The menu boasts some interesting dishes as well as crowd pleasing standards. It's difficult to find 'fried mushrooms' on any menu, let alone fried oyster mushrooms! YUM! Our only suggestion would be to broil the spinach balls (how about naming them Spinach Rounds?) an extra 5 minutes in the brick oven to give them a crisp on the outside, to ratchet up the contrast of crispy on outside, soft on inside flavor. Everything we ordered, from the cucumber martini to the manhattan and wines were incredible. Looking forward to coming back here soon!

Food: The menu was a bit small but everything we tried was really good. The bartender recommended the burger and it was delicious! Atmosphere: The atmosphere was fun and different for Newport. We noticed a large party being seated when we were leaving which is always a good thing to remember for future needs. This would be a great place to host your next special event!

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about The Fifth Element. I hosted a 30th wedding anniversary for my parents and Frank went completely above and beyond to make sure all details were ready for the party. The space is absolutely gorgeous and fits right into the eclecticism of Broadway. We had the entire bar area available for our party and there was plenty of seating for our guests. The food, which was DELICIOUS, was brought out steadily throughout the party and available on a wooden suspended island in the center of the bar area. The large front windows are able to be swung open which makes for an incredible indoor/outdoor experience which is completely singular to the Fifth Element. The menu available for the party was plentiful and we had a range of food for both the meat eaters and the vegetarian guests. The drinks were generous and the wait staff/bartenders were so attentive and friendly. Frank was my point of contact throughout the entire event and treated this party like it was his main priority. He helped me select menu items and made recommendations about use of space for floral arrangements etc. I arrived early to set up and Frank was there making sure everything was perfect. The cupcakes had been dropped off earlier in the day and when he opened them to check on them the frosting was messed up. He took the cupcakes back to the bakery and had them fixed before I even arrived. All in all, the night was completely magical and I could NOT have imagined a better place/better people to work with. As a born and raised Newporter, I've had lots of experience with restaurants in the Newport area and The Fifth Element is without a doubt the most professional, warm, fun restaurant Newport has to offer.

Wow....what a fabulous pizza last Friday! Pesto, pine nuts on a crispy, just right pizza....chased with ice cold Blue Moon. Not to mention that excellent people watching on Broadway. Thanks 5E!!

I thought the food was A-OK but the atmosphere of the place was great! The music was Honky Tonk (a band that did some funk and country combo) and it was FUN. It started around 10 pm on Saturday. My friend ordered oysters and enjoyed it- I had a pasta that came with pancetta but I asked them to take that out and add some of the kale that it came with or some extra vegetables (since it was an option with the sides) because I'm vegetarian. I don't think it had extra kale and it definitely didn't have any other vegetables, so I was a bit annoyed. I also had to add some salt and pepper to the pasta dish. But I know the pancetta probably was going to add that saltiness that I was missing. I suggest people do go to this spot for the fun and some other food items.

Best pasta dish in town. Just had the Fresh Tagliatelle. Been craving a good Italian dish and this did not disappoint. The bartender, Jay is handsome and charming. What a dining experience! I'll be back for sure.

This place had a nice interior - very trendy and had a great vibe. I wish I could give it a higher rating, but that was food was just OK. My boyfriend and I had the filet and it was very good just nothing special and from reading the reviews I was expecting more. The menu was also very standard and nothing really jumped out at us as having to try. I left my meal feeling not disappointed, but underwhelmed.

Omg I going to be drunk when I stand up. When in a party of 12 food arrives in a timely manner and has great flavor. The entire party is happy and the restraint has great parking. Thx for a great night!!

I was excited to be trying out this place when my friend had mentioned it prior to my trip up to Newport. The place can get crowded on weekends, so I would suggest making a reservation. The interior is quite "trendy" and since it is a lounge as well as a restaurant, it can get kind of loud. I shared 2 appetizers with my group (spinach balls and fried oyster mushrooms), which were both pretty good. For my main, I had the spatzle dish, which was also fairly good. However, the food didn't knock my socks off or anything. The one thing I didn't enjoy too much was their dessert: creme brulee. Our table of 5 wanted to get 2 to share, but they only had one left. Once it arrived, it was kind of obvious that the creme brulee had been pre-prepared (as in, the caramelized top had been created earlier on in the evening) and as a result, the dish lacked that crunchiness that creme brulees ought to have. Overall, the food was okay but kind of overpriced. Also, I would've liked to have seen Korben Dallas and Ruby Rhod memorabilia, though I'm only half kidding about this.

Ate here after Jazz Festival. Half the tables were open, we didn't have a reservation, hostess didn't want to seat us at a 2 - top because the next reservation was due in 70 minutes. We promised to eat fast. Server didn't take our order for 20 minutes. We had mussels appetizer; good. Had basic pizza; took 25 minutes to be served, it was burned and skimpy on cheese. Lousy food.

I went to the element to see a band that a friends husband was in. The place was packed but it was still really comfortable. I ordered a drink and it come fairly quickly. My friend and I also got the spinach balls, the oyster mushrooms, the kale salad, a burger and fries, and the Guinness cake. The food was good. I just started eating neat again as the burger was AMAZING. The mushrooms were also delicious. Not too spicy at all and really lightly fried. The kale salad wasn't at all what I expected, but good. The spinach balls were good but I think I had built them up a bit with all the reviews and my friends saying they were so good. I liked everything else better. I would go back. It was fun. Not my favorite place in town. Oh-it also took the server FOREVER to take our order. It may have been that it was clear that we were "with the band"but it was probably 30-45 minutes. It isn't my favorite place in town but like I said, I would go back, especially to listen to music.

My family and I recently had an amazing experience with the Fifth Element hosting my sister's baby shower this month. I had a few problems while brainstorming for restaurants for her baby shower. It had to be a specific day and date (a Saturday) as my sister was traveling from out of state, and a day party (brunch). Many restaurants in the area didn't have availability for Saturday parties, and all of them only offered brunch on Sundays. Then, I remembered I had great experiences eating dinner at the Fifth Element, so I gave them a call. I got in contact with Brad, one of the owners of the restaurant, and he was incredibly accommodating with my needs through phone calls and e-mails right up until the day of the party. Together, we were able to set up a special time for the party when the restaurant wasn't open, so we had the whole place to ourselves for a few hours. Our party was able to have a special brunch menu, and they gladly accepted our suggestions for food. We were able to add dishes such as a great cut of salmon that they smoked in house three days prior, and two types of crepes: both sweet (banana & honey) and savory (ham & gruyere cheese). They were incredibly diligent with providing a great custom menu while keeping your designated price point in mind. The party was really great. We were able to set up tables and decorations with no problems an hour before the party started, and everyone that helped us out were incredibly efficient and friendly. I was able to play a special playlist off my iPod for the party and we also had a small photo slideshow running in the background of my sister and brother in law on the smart tvs on the bar side. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was perfect. We had many of our friends and family let us know after the party that they loved the restaurant. I am so happy that we went here for my sister's baby shower, and for sure, if we have another private party the Fifth Element will be on top of our list. Until then, I will continue to get dinner here and support this great restaurant.

Eight friends and I were barhopping on a Saturday night in Newport. Actually, we were barhopping both Friday and Saturday night, but the 5th looked dead on Friday night (we were disappointed). We got to the 5th around 9ish on Saturday and it was already pretty busy. A live band was coming in at 10. We stood around for a bit with our drinks and saw a table that looked to be opening up. The hostess was very helpful with securing the table for us, as it was one of the few areas that could accommodate us. The bartenders and wait staff were very pleasant. I started with a beer, and moved on to a couple (4-5) espresso martinis to start the drinks flowing and give me a pick-me-up for the rest of the night. Their espresso martinis were really good in comparison to others I have tried in the past. I wish I had the chance to try the food. The pizza looked AWESOME.

Earth...Water...Wind...Fire...Spinach Balls Yup. That's the Fifth Element. Beyond the wacky new age-meets-modernist interior complete with a giant orange Buddha and minimalist semi-industrial booths is a kitchen that holds within it the magical touch to create Newport's best artisanal pizzas and the famed Spinach Balls. The spinach balls are simply that: round balls of spinach bound together by some sort of agent, whether its bread, tempered egg or mild cheese, we may never know because the flavor of sautéed spinach permeates every chomp. When dipped in the savory brown sauce (something like a vinaigrette) that adorns the plate, these food bites are so delicious that even the pickiest kid would probably enjoy the green asteroids of awesome. The pizza crust at Fifth Element embodies everything that any flatbread pizza crust aspires to. It's just bready enough to provide substance and lift, grilled just enough so you're confident that you're not consuming raw dough, and tasty enough that if given the opportunity, you'd probably welcome a round of it as a bready appetizer. The pizza specials are always inventive - ranging from hard smoked salmon enveloped in succulent béchamel cream to asparagus and spring onion with a blend of white cheese. These daily specials are creative enough to tempt you to come back every night in a single week just to see what the new offering is.

The atmosphere was very nice. There was live music on Sunday brunch. The brunch menu was limited. The portion was small. The bacon and mussel were decent. Service is friendly but very slow. I ordered the omelette which is very disappointing. Appetizers is probably the way to go if you come here for brunch.

Went on a Saturday evening and the place was Packed! The food is good, but nothing amazing. Also it is way overpriced. I feel like this place is trying too hard to be hip, so they have eclectic decor and random ingredients on the menu like "grana" and "frisee" to try and prove it. Not impressed.

Had a relatively trippy night here with dad - dinner at the bar. At first I was really uncomfortable because they were trying to hard to make us feel comfortable and then I felt BAD for not being the way they were trying to make me feel... UGH ALL THESE FEELINGS. Kidding - it was great! I boozer it up (sorta). Bartender was VERY professional - it was weird. I'm not used to that! Still, pretty good. And for all you sports fans out there: not a bad place to watch whatever game you want. Multiple flatscreens and then another EIGHT FT TV! I'm hardly that enthusiastic - I could care leas about sports. But last night when those hockey players starting punching the $hit out of each other (and this went on for awhile) I just couldn't take my eyes off their brown and white opposing jerseys (go bruins - duh). Wanna know why? Because they're SEXY. There. I said it. I had four blue moons... Or, was it four blue moons and a Narragansett? I don't even like Narragansett beer that much - ESP not on draft - well this particular flavor was too hoppy and dark. Sike on the whole not liking Narragansett thing, I met the owner once at a liquor store (I discount liquor warehouse in Warwick) and he was super dope! He gave me a free draft glass that said NARRAGANSET. They have other flavors. There's some wheat like or hefeweisen (arg spellin) variant that of course is delish. But back to the bar! The fifth element. So yeah! We tried it. Dad got spinach balls (interesting but too spinachy and there's bread in it) and orange shrimp (too sweet!) and I had the Atlantic salmon (good with a mouthful of grape). I eat salmon as much as possible to try and stave off depression. The food was just ok. The cooks were HOT. The atmosphere was celebratory, warm, dark cozy and sorta christmasy. The place is divided into two and no one seemed to want to sit at the sit down table area which has the cool laughing buddha (fun fact: the laughing Buddha is the chinese's interpretive depiction of the Buddha Maitreya. Maitreya is the next coming Buddha of the future. We have to incarnate for countless eons to see him. Buddha Shakyamuni was the famous dude who chilled with Jesus 2500 years(?) ago - astonishingly, Bce. Thats before the COMMON ERA, not Christ. Bitch) whooo anyways - btw unlike Shakyamuni buddha, Maitreya will not teach BOTH sutra and Tantra - only sutra. Which is still cool! But we gotta wait for the 11th buddha to get back to that... Anyways it's weird that no one was sitting in this area, and maybe just maybe that might have something to do with the fact that it's 10pm on a Tuesday night. Sigh - new York..... Ahh! Anyways good selection of beer, decent menu - above average bar food for sure. I'll give it that. Good place to throw a party I imagine. Oh! And another point on the decor... It's ahhh, kinda Pier 1 Imports-y.

A second choice for brunch, but no longer a second choice! Risotto well prepared, delicious and not skimpy Bloody Caesar, tasty coffee, but the part that killed me was the French toast. Not soggy, not doughy, a crisp and flavourful cinnamon treat. Definitely getting it next time! With jazz playing in the bar, this is a definite for those asking for a contemporary brunch without the Newport fluff.

I hosted a surprise 30th birthday party here for my boyfriend last weekend. The Fifth Element made it super easy and stress free to plan this event, and everyone had a blast! It was a casual get together of about 25 people, and there was no fee to host the gathering, which I thought was awesome. They reserved the area in the front of the bar for us, which has large street-facing windows and a lot of open space for mingling. A local band called The Ubiquitones started playing around 9:30/10:00, which was great because we love live music. I ordered a bunch of appetizers and pizzas, and all of the food was tasty and reasonably priced. The server was great and kept the drinks coming (the Fifth makes a great cocktail). I recommend the Fifth Element martini myself. Overall I would definitely recommend The Fifth Element if you are looking to host an event or party, they were very easy to work with and have a fun atmosphere. It's also a great spot in general for dinner or the bar scene, as you won't get the unruly college crowd and it has live music and great drinks.

We went there for the first time tonight and i was not very impressed. A very small menu that did have some creative stuff on it but not anything that made me go WOW. My wife had a chicken stew and the selection of chicken used was the wind and thigh. Not very high quality and it was reflected in the taste. The room decor was very hip and that me it kinda of out of place in Newport, RI but it did show some creativity. I think this would be the place I would go for a drink and that's about it. I suggest going across Broadway and check on the Norey;s or the Salvation Cafe.

My favorite place in Newport hands down!!! The owners, Frank and Brad and the executive chef, Chris, are so welcoming, serve amazing food and provide an awesome atmosphere! They only want to serve the highest quality of ingredients from local distributors, have a great wine/cocktail list and a super friendly staff/bartenders. The atmosphere and decor are chic and comfortable, and they frequently have live music. Whether you want a delicious brunch, yummy dinner, a private event or just drinks-this is THE place. I've enjoyed everything I've ordered for my many brunches, lunches and dinners at the Fifth. My fav's on the menu are the spinach balls, pizza of the moment (changes daily), the steak and homemade thick cut bacon!

Overall great experience. It was a little pricey though. My hamburger although delicious was about $14. I was in a t-shirt and some cords, if your don't give a poop that's great, but other wise wear a collared shirt and tuck that thing in. I will be coming back :)

This place is okkkkayyy- it doesn't know if it wants to be a fine dining restaurant or a bar. The two stars is for the open window seating. The food is upscale, overpriced bar food. There is one burger on the menu, and no BBQ sauce. The burger comes on sour dough bread WTF?!?

What a great find for a place to eat in Newport. We wandered in after having our interest piqued at the name (we're both Fifth Element movie fans) and were not disappointed. The atmosphere as everyone commented is really nice layout. Just as we sat at the bar the Sunday jazz band started playing, the windows were all open letting the great weather in, and they had a good array of beer on tap to quench our thirst. The bartender was friendly, the music was great - would the food hold up? He had a roasted chicken sandwich that was served with an aioli not too mayonnaise-y, and a nicely done side of french fries. I had the burger, but it wan't just any ole' burger: this thing was seasoned *perfectly*, cooked just as perfectly, served on a ciabatta roll, and had a beautifully thick piece of cheese and some prosciutto. Really great burger! It was a great experience, and we'll be back the next time we're in Newport. I am hoping to make it back to hear that great jazz band.

My sister hosted my baby shower at the Fifth Element this past weekend. The food was fantastic! We were served iced tea and a raspberry lime drink and started with various dips & cruditee including baba ghanoush, crab dip, quinoa salad, cheeses, nuts & dried fruit, and white bean dip served with various dipping vegetables and toasted bread. This was followed by a chopped salad and a variety of pizza including white pizza with mushrooms, pepperoni pizza with not your average pepperoni and a veggie pizza. Everyone raved about how good the food is, including my vegan cousin who was accomodated with her needs. The staff was very personable and helpful and accomodating. I haven't been to the Fifth Element since they re-opened on Broadway three years ago and I had only gone for the bar when they were on Thames. I'm now wondering why I haven't been! The success of the shower has made me want to go to their restaurant on a regular night.

Mediocre at best. The location and atmosphere are wonderful. Unfortunately, this restaurant falls short on all other fronts. Upon walking in, a large Dunkin Donuts cup was on display at the hostess booth. The hostess then offered to seat us away from an older drunk man who was passed out on the table during dinner hours. My friend and I both ordered one of their specialty drinks. Mine was overly sweet and his was watery. Certainly not a good mixture on either drink. The food menu is limited, and not appetizing. The burger was average. I will not be returning as there are much better options in the Newport area.

This was the starting place for my sister-in-law's bachelorette party last month - and we couldn't have picked a better place for the occasion. It was a gorgeous Newport evening and the front windows were all opened up. The atmosphere is very fun and energetic and the waitstaff all seemed to be smiling and in a good mood while we were there. They have a great menu with options that could please just about anyone - we had a couple of vegetarians in the group who were very happy with the amount of choices they had. The prices are reasonable, especially when compared to other Newport establishments. Location is great for going out after too - although it is a little bit of a distance if you plan to walk to Thames St area. Parking was challenging but not impossible in the area (the restaurant does not have a lot or valet). We all enjoyed our meal and drinks at 5th Element.

This may be one of my new faves in Newport. 1st of all, Im totally diggin' the new design. Very industrial. Very awesome. I havent had the food yet at the new location, but Ive heard great things. The bartenders and staff are cool, the drinks are cold, and the music is great. On the weekends, they bring in a DJ and push all the tables to the side. Dance Party! I also love this place cause I can WALK home.... which is always a plus. :) The only thing I would change, is the seating in the lounge area. being 6' tall, sitting on those tiny little stool things is award and uncomfortable. And forget it if Ive had a drink or 2. I would never be able to balance on those things. Maybe a few chairs would be a nice addition? K? Thanks in advance. *oh! Also, the windows are awesome. You dont feel like your missing the sunshine if your here, cause its beaming in through the glass. Great people watching on Broadway too!

The food was pretty good: -Mussels were fresh and served in a nice broth with a kick of spice. -Bresaola pizza was nicely thin, crispy and chewy, with good sauce. -Burger was average -Spicy fish taco was very fresh and flaky, but needed a tad of salt. With the salt, it was very good. They were very generous with their wine pours, depending on what you ordered. Pretty good staff.

Definitely one of the top five places to eat in Newport. The ambience is great menu is small but food is awesome. Service is also very good. They were on an excellent location on thames street a few years back but moved to broadway but doesn't matter the quality and service is so good people made it to broadway. Tourist should explore this hidden charm.

The Fifth Element oozes the coziness of a small beachside town yet feels thoroughly cosmopolitan. I dig it. This is a spot I want to return to during a Newport winter. Or a thunderstorm. A welcome reprieve from the Newport beach bars. Fantastic menu including salads, gourmet pizzas and seafood. Or just come through for a cocktail-- order the espresso martini minus the Bailey's. So delicious, yet absolutely potent.

I've only been in Newport for about 3 months and had a friend suggest this restaurant. What a great recommendation! This is the best food I've had in Newport- in a city inundated with overpriced tourist traps serving subpar food, this restaurant stands out! I had the chicken schnitzel and after 3 years of living in Germany, I absolutely enjoyed this dish. The drinks were great and reasonably priced as well. Finally, the service was friendly, pleasant, and fast. We went here for my mother's BDay while she was in town and had a perfect dining experience. Haven't tried out the bar side for Monday Night Football, but if it's half as good as the restaurant portion, it should prove to be great!

Trendy place to grab dinner, we came in with no reservations and were able to share a high-top table in the bar area. Service was quick, great service, and I always like being able to see the kitchen. This was a while ago so I don't quite remember what I ordered, but the portions were quite generous and my friends enjoyed their beer and wine

First impressions are everything... While the restaurant layout is easily 4.5 stars, waiting over 10 minutes after being seated for a server to stop by is unacceptable. The food we had was very good but not spectacular - very nice chicken, mushroom, and pesto "pizza of the moment". The margherita pizza and my wife's salad were both good. The restaurant layout is fantastic, with sliding full length windows that open completely to the outside. Happening bar scene if that's your thing and a great location on Broadway. If I get to try again, I'll update the review - but for now 3 stars is all I can justify with the poor service we received and the good, but not spectacular, food. Definitely worth a try though...

We stopped in to have a beer and watch the end of the Patriots game, and ended up staying for dinner. The bartender was a lot of fun. We enjoyed sitting at the bar and watching the game. The edamame usually comes with scicy sauce but I chose to have them salted. Really great. Seafood chowder had saffron, not cream based. Excellent. For dinner we shared a pizza. Lots of locals eat here and suggested the pizza. Good choice. This is a realy great place that I'd love to have in my own neighborhood.

The Fifth Element is a fine place to go grab some basic food on Broadway. It's big enough to seat us when Salvation is full up. The bar gets a trendy pack of 30 and 40 something Newporters in the evening, but the dining room still stays comfortable for well behaved kids. The ambiance is a little funky but kind of a mash up of pseudo-Eastern decor with industrial fixtures. Depending on your tastes, it will seem cool or contrived. The food is done well from a fairly basic menu. They do simple things like salads, burgers, and fries very well. Perhaps not the most imaginative menu. However, the service was top notch. Our server was extremely attentive and made sure to accommodated our special requests. We'll be back to the Fifth Element, but might not go far out of our way to get there.
