Most disgusting sushi I have ever eaten. I thought they put chicken fingers in my sushi roll and to add when I received my bill I had to read it about 10 times because I couldn't believe that what I just ate cost 75$. I felt robbed. If I could give less than 1 star I would. Never again. Go to mizu.

Ugh what a disappointment . Below average quality , high prices, unhappy staff AND absurdly small portions Seaweed salad was literally 2 bites. Soup was tasty so I gave one star Avoid

I am a local and decided to try this place when the owner, who was standing on the stairs, beckoned us to come in. The place was empty at lunch time on a summer Saturday, perhaps because tourists were reading yelp reviews on their mobile devices. To make a long story short, this place's low ratings are justified. The food is mediocre, the portions small, and just about everything is overpriced. You'll do better at the food court in the mall.

Not the best sushi I've had, Not the worst sushi I've had. Nothing wowed me, then again nothing fell completely flat either. Take out service was good--they actually forgot to put in our spicy tuna roll, but when I called back they were extremely apologetic and offered 2 free spicy tuna rolls at my next visit. I don't know when my next visit will be as I don't live in Newport but they were really nice in extending the free spicy tuna rolls to my brother and his family since they are the ones who are local. Very nice save Sumo Sushi! Nigiri: Super White Tuna, Tuna and Yellowtail. Nice big pieces of fresh fish. Very fresh, yet kind of bland--perhaps not the best quality. Well-cooked sushi rice. Maki: California rolls, shrimp tempura rolls, salmon rolls These rolls are very small, the menu might say 6 pieces per roll but they're pretty small pieces. Also the shrimp is breaded shrimp, not the nice batter coated as it should be with Tempura. It tasted OK, but just not Tempura. Fresh ingredients. Average taste. If you plan to do the take-out route and have never dined there before or seen their in-house menue, have them FAX the menu to you because their online menu wasn't as complete as their paper take out menu. It's a small sushi bar. About 8 seats at the sushi bar and table seating for about 20-25 and it's cozy close seating I noted. Big sign on the front says BYOB.

Indeed it is a BYOB restaurant. Be warned though.. it's still a $1 per person. Just so you know... and the closest liquor shop (downstairs) takes cash only (which majorly sucks in my opinion). Moderately priced.. I thought the sashimi was decent but the rolls were just not good. The rolls were not gigantic.. the fish in it wasn't totally fresh or tasty. I guess I am kind of a sushi snob so it might be passable for some people. I would go for all sashimi if you can afford it. They did accomodate us and were willing to run 14 different credit cards for our table. So yay to that. They also had a special for a spicy tuna hand roll.. buy one get one free. Only a winter special though.. back page of the menu.

The worst sushi I've ever had. Actually the sushi was ok, but the rolls were terrible. The spider roll had cold and very hard chunks crab. On top of it it was expensive. Totally not worth it. By the way I know sushi being in Japan 7 times. I don't expect same quality in the US, but sumo motivated me to post this review.

I have been living in and out of newport for the last 10 years and when I returned this summer to newport from California the wife and I decided that we were in the mood for sushi. Where do you find authentic JAPANESE sushi on the East Coast....I didn't have a clue. I did remember that Sumo had been around for almost a decade so I gave it a shot...HEY! It had to be good--it has been in business for this long right? ~WRONG!!!!! This place obviously flourishes from its visible location on the very touristy Thames. If this place was anywhere else it would be out of business. I wonder what their repeat patronage is like...I would guess poor. +'s 1. Location -'s 1. The fish is about the turn. Don't serve it! It is obvious that they are not supplied fresh fish enough and that the owner preserves it with salt so that it keeps longer (probably out of necessity out of lack of patronage) 2. The service is sparse and poor. The russian waitress was seldom seen. 3. BYOB=owner is too cheap to pay for a liquor license, or worse, lost it. Sushi without beer is like a burger without a coke! 4. You have water intrusion on the roof. Fix it....wouldn't have noticed with a better wait staff. 5. Ridiculously overpriced for bait quality fish. 6. Parking...pfttt. hope you like to walk. Garbage!

2 Stars means exactly what yelp describes it as "Meh. I've experienced better." We might go back to this sushi spot if in the area, but give it two stars because we've had a lot of sushi in our day and definitely enjoyed top notch sushi from all around. Pros: Spicy Hotate? This is a scallop roll with a spicy special sauce that is really good. I think the owner does a really nice job with the spicy rolls. I like that the rolls don't have too much rice. Service was pretty good - our server was really nice and so was the owner...to us Cons: While the owner was nice to us, he wasn't as nice to our server. It made us feel a little uncomfortable. Surely not all boss/employees will get along, but please don't make it obvious in front of customers.

Labeled as a Korean / Japanese restaurant but Korean items are very limited and very average quality...don't expect any pancheon, or Korean speaking waitors... Mandoo soup was alright but bibimpbap had shredded iceberg lettuce in it...what the, who the...?? Luckily I had brought two bottles of wine and was happy to pay the $2 corkage fee in order to get drunk and lament the lack of authenticity at this place.

    Sushi connoisseurs beware!!! Horrible.

  • Amanda N.

I have been eating at Sumo since Steve opened his doors back in 2002. It is BYOB with a corkage of $1 per person which is pretty rock bottom for Newport. I love being able to bring sake, beer, or sparkles with me and enjoy them with dinner. It is the best sushi in Newport! Must try's include the Crunchy Crab Hand-rolls -- for those of us that are locals we enjoy the buy one get one special he runs on them Sundays--Thursday in the winter. His prices are the most reasonable for Sushi on the island.. I've eaten at every single sushi place on the island and I can say that no one else makes a spicy roll of any kind quite like his. The sake nigiri was amazingly fresh, I had just watched him filet a giant piece of salmon...it tasted amazing.

So my first experience here was last week. It was the day after I had arrived back from my vacation to California. I was craving sushi, probably because I had so much of it while I was in Cali. I get on these weird, gotta eat it kicks, plus I love sushi! Sumo Sushi is down the street from where I work, and I've never been. I know its been there forever, so I figured it would be good. I figured for the price I was about to pay, the rolls would be a good size. But the rolls where small and it was kinda overpriced. The quality didn't seem that great either. The two rolls didn't come close to filling me up. One major disappointment is the "BYOB" policy. I don't really care to bring in my own alcohol. Don't you find that kinda trashy? Maybe it's just me?

I've been local in Newport for about a year, and this is the worst place my wife and I have eaten here. Ordered takeout and I basically had to break down what maki meant to this guy. I said "NO HAND ROLLS" but when I got home, had 7 of these mystery rolls, plus my actual order (which was missing one of the items we actually did order). On top of this, the sushi was below average and was really expensive.

    (1)
  • Chris H.

MMMMmmm... crunchy crab hand rolls... Sumo Sushi was my first real sushi experience, and as is so often the case, I never forgot my first. Anyone who thinks they got less than fresh sushi here must be from the midwest, because it doesn't get any fresher than this place. I will not get sea urchin roe at many restaurants, but I buy it any time I can afford to when I go here, because I can be assured that it will be at the peak of freshness.

BYOB. Enough said. Overall sushi was good and priced great...four of us ate their and it came to $50.

We had dinner at Sumo Sushi on Friday night. I had steamed pork dumplings for an appetizer, miso soup and the unagi-don (eel bowl) as my entree. The dumplings were small and the miso soup was a bit salty for my taste. Overall the meal was average. I found it odd that my eel came as two big slabs rather than the cut and arranged eels strips that I am used to seeing when ordering an eel bowl. I'm not an expert with chop sticks and found the big slabs of eel hard to maneuver/eat. I would definitely come back, but will probably order sushi rather than the eel next time.

holy crap this place has some bad press. let me try to set this straight. i have lived in newport up until i was 22 and worked on thames street for seven of those years. almost every week i would get take out from sumo, and the sushi has always been fresh and delicious. i would totally avoid sushi go, which is NOT fresh, and you can taste it. a note to all those misguided tourists who went to cali for a week or whatever, and think it's not possible to find authentic sushi on the east coast: that's ridiculous. you totally can. it just isn't on every street corner over here. the seafood is just as fresh on the east coast, and there are plenty of sushi chefs over on this end of the country. at one point i decided to work for sumo sushi. well, big mistake. but i can tell you this: the fish is NOT old. they get frequent, small, deliveries of sea food; some of which is fresh-frozen, but never for very long. you can always see steve cleaning the fish there and prepping everything before every shift. i have also sat down to eat in the restaurant many times. yes, the service can be clueless. the thing is, asians have way different work ethics than most americans, and it's tough to work for them. it's culture clash thing. so the only servers who stick around well, you get the idea, they're desperate (russians with a language barrier, for example). but, the service is never terrible! and i've only had polite, and well-meaning servers there. anyway, i really love this place.. it has a clean, and cozy atmosphere, tastefully and interestingly decorated. steve, the owner, is a -very- serious guy. he doesn't mean to give people attitude, but that's just how he comes off. he's just kind of intense that's all, and will never win any popularity contests. one thing you should know, the BYOB trend in newport is a popular thing. it is REALLY difficult to secure a liquor license for yourself as a cafe or restaurant due to the wait list and pricing of the license. so, many restaurants get the BYOB license instead. it's a way for them to accommodate you! personally, i love BYOB. and for these guys, i think it's a good thing. the liquor store is two doors down from them (around the corner actually) and they sell decent sake and basically anything you would want. there is a DIRT CHEAP corking fee of 1$. other places i've worked have been 5$ on average. i hope some of you will take the bad reviews with a grain of salt, and try this place sometime. like i said, i always bring my family and friends here. it's a fun relaxing place, and everyone always enjoys it. i always come back to this spot, even with places like sea shai just over in middletown. just to recap: coming from someone who worked for them, quit on less than favorable terms, admits that the owner is less than personable and has plenty of other sushi options... i still basically insist on getting my sushi here. why? because it IS good.

We went there for lunch while sight-seeing in the area. I had the sashimi entree, which was great. My wife had a couple of rolls and some tempura (delicious), while the kids had the udon noodles. The only disappointment was the spider roll (soft shell crab), which had too much batter. Overall, I would say the meal was okay for the area.

My experience was so bad at Sumo that i am compelled to create a yelp account just to warn others how bad this place really is. I went there with my gf right before last call for sushi, so being hungry, we ordered alot of food. The first thing that came out was a soft shell crab appetizer, the soft shell crab was frozen, and sumo uses the same sweet sauce drizzled over everything that tastes like maple syrup. I had a bite and left the rest of the food on the plate. the rest of the sushi wasn't much better, we ordered around 20 pieces of nigri between the 2 of us. Being hungry, I ate 3-4 pieces even though you can tell the quality of the fish was highly suspect. My gf told me to stop because it wasn't worth risking food poisoning just because we were hungry and had about $80 worth of uneaten sushi left sitting on the plate. Granted, I have high standards when it comes to sushi, but still, the fact that we were seriously worried about a bad case of food poisoning based solely on the look and taste of the sushi tells you something. Aside from that, the sushi chef was rude, the waitress unfriendly and clueless, and the restaurant smells like old rug. We still laugh about how bad that meal was.

this is likely the best sushi in Newport. Unfortunately, that's not saying too much. Nonetheless, the salmon was some of the best I have ever tasted--nice and melt-in-your-mouth unctuous.

My choice for sushi in newport. Sumo sushi is located on upper thames above the Newport T-Shirt place. Service is kind of slow since they are understaffed. The owner is always there everyday, Steve is so great and I love his secret sauces and specially made rolls Here are my faves: -Sumo's famous Crunchy Crab Hand Roll (in the winter months, they are buy 1 get 1 free) -Red Sox Roll (Shrimp tempura maki layered with tuna, tobiko, and their special sauce) -Andy Roll (Fried Yellow Tail and Flying Fish Roe towering over an Avocado and Cucumber roll splashed with special sauce.) -Bento Box lunches (little morsels of goodness, only available during the winter months) The special rolls are very large (about 8-10 pieces) and even the maki rolls are thicker than most restaurants. They do also serve Korean and Japanese foods if you are not into sushi. It also has a BYOB service and there is a liquor store one store front over! If you don't want to wait an hour at Brick Alley for a table, walk a few steps more to Sumo Sushi for a different Newport experience.

This place is terrible. Honestly, I do not know how anyone who has ever had 'real' sushi can rate this at over one star. Tiny sushi rolls, low quality product, poor service, and overpriced. Not to mention that the place is too cheap to obtain a liquor licence, but charges patrons to bring their OWN alcohol. And they didn't even mention the BYOB charge, instead trying to hide it in the bill, in hope that patron won't notice. Do NOT try this restaurant.

I must give warning regarding this restaurant. My husband and I have lived in Newport for quite sometime and 100% avoid this place. We tried it when first moving here; I became very ill for a couple days after eating here. This is not a clean or reliable sushi place to eat. The fish is not fresh, the sushi is un-inventive, and the service is terrible. If you would like to try sushi, this is not the place to go; I would hate for someone to decide they don't like sushi because they've become ill over it! If you have experience with sushi and have developed a more discerning palate; omg, please don't go here; you'll be insulted. Awful.

I spend most of my weekends in Newport and I like this place. As others have said, I have dinned at better and more expensive sushi places but I always enjoyed my experience here.

I went here with 6 girls for dinner and the only thing I liked about this place was it was BYOB. It was a quiet Friday night when we went. The waitresses were all very nice and attentive but I would not recommend this place for sushi. I ordered sake sashimi, spicy tuna roll and another one that I don't even remember. The rolls are poorly made and much smaller than what a maki should be. Also, the maki rolls that are pictured on the menu isn't true when you actually order the rolls.

This is the best sushi in Newport. The place is small and has a great relaxed but nice atomosphere. Located right on upper Thames, it is easy find and next to other restaurants, bars, and shopping. Steve Lee, the owner, is a fantastic sushi chef and great person. Always welcoming my girlfriend and I with a huge smile and often a hug. We were regulars while living in Newport and make sure to stop in whenever we are back on the east coast. Steve is the only sushi chef there. You know you're getting good sushi when the chef is the owner. He often gives a free spicy crab handroll when you order a bunch of food or have a quick convo with him. He has a few special/signature rolls including the Red Sox roll and the Andy Roll. Both are delicious. The quality of fish is amazing - in particular salmon and his rolls are meticulous. Service is always good even when busy. BYOB! This is great, because usually when you go out for sushi you'll end up spending as much or more on wine/beer/sake than you do on your meal - not at Sumo. Bring your own wine and they'll give you a bucket and ice and uncork it for you. Its only about $2 per person. If you're going to Newport or live in RI and are looking for sushi, Sumo Sushi is where to go!

Love the sushi and the crunchy handrolls....Has been a while last time I was there but they still had my bottle of sushi with my name on it...my daughter loves the place too...perfect for a summer evening after a nice and relaxing walk through Thames st....

I didn't really get the greatest service at Sumo Sushi. It seemed as though they were not expecting an early springtime rush so they were understaffed. It happens. Although I sat longer than I wanted the food was good. The best part is the fact that this is a BYOB restaurant right on Thames Street. It makes for a less expensive night in a beautiful, expensive town. I'll go back.

Thanks to Matt L for finding this fine BYOB restaurant. See my YELP list for other fine BYOB restaurants from all over New England.

Without a doubt my favorite sushi around (that includes Providence & Boston). Everything is very fresh & the owner is super friendly. I recommend the Andy roll & the crunchy crab hand roll. Yes it's BYOB, but the owner will actually let you leave your wine/saki for next time if you don't finish it. Or you can buy 2 bottles & leave one behind with your name on it. They really try to do everything they can to work around it. Also, as the other poster stated, it's Newport. NO ONE has parking. It's a pain but it's the way it is.

  • Twiggy B.

Went during off season and ordered 4 different rolls. Tuna was NOT fresh, and I'm always leery of places that pour lots of sauces over rolls. Maybe better in high season but definitely not great sushi.

    (1)
  • Clark A.

I like this place. I don't understand the negative reviews. One guy even complained about the parking and the byob policy. This is NEWPORT. The owner has ZERO control over the parking availability or pricing of the parking. He doesn't get to park his own car for free, either. As for the byob policy, liquor licenses for restaurants are very tightly controlled here, in limited supply, and extremely expensive. There's a liquor store in the same building where you can get your favorite beverage. His not having a full bar is not that big of a deal, guys. The food is always fresh. Yes, I've had better - and paid a lot more for it, too. The owner, Steve, is a very personable guy and cares a lot for the quality of his product. Personally, and this is from a guy who's had sushi all over the world made by Japanese, Chinese and Koreans, I think this is hands down the best sushi in Newport. Have I had better elsewhere? Yes, but not on Aquidneck Island. Negatives? The waitstaff. Try as he might, he can't get decent help there. If he had better waitstaff he'd get five stars. Tips? Get to know the guy behind the sushi bar. He's the owner. He's a fun guy.

I went here knowing it wasn't Japanese sushi - I should have known better. Sometimes you can get good sushi even if the chef/owner is not Japanese. Unfortunately that is not the case here. Don't get me wrong, it's not terrible - it's just not really that good. I've seen several reviews where people love this place. Can't really imagine why - it's nothing special, certainly below average. I've been eating sushi for many, many years. I've had good, bad, and middling sushi - for the area, I really expected better. For those who want to know - head up to Portland, ME and go the Benkay - now THAT's good sushi for a smaller NE city. By the way - the 'famous' spicy crab hand roll is utter crap. No flavor - just a giant load of hot sauce mixed in with imitation crab. Service - not good either - and the place wasn't even close to being busy. If I want tea at a sushi place, I generally expect green tea - they have black chinese tea here - not a bad tea, but just one more nail.....won't be back.

I am shocked that this place isn't out of business. I came to to-go the saddest avocado cucumber roll of my life. ALMOST NO AVOCADO and cucumber. The got literally 6 of the tiniest peices and I got charged $5 something. Almost a dollar for each little round. It was TINY, I TELL YOU. I was starving and needed a filling bite. This was a mistake. I should have read the reviews. The owner guy seems to be the main sushi chef. The worst word I heard when I got to this restaurant is "geh-sseki" which means "son of a bitch" in Korean. The guy was yelling at the waiter. He said "geh-sseki" about 4 or 5 times for the 7 minutes I was there to the waiter. The waiter seemed new and confused. The place had like... 3 customers... which isn't hard to keep up with. But it wasn't just the waitor who was confused. When my roll was made and packed, the owner and a woman running the cashier were confused as to who had ordered the avocado cucumber roll. It was pretty obvious that I was the only take out, as I was standing right in front of the cashier booth... and there were 3 customers dining.. like who else? Lolol. All-in-all, shitty food, shitty price, shitty service, shitty ambiance. This place should shut down. It's sketchy. The owner guy seems crummy. Also, the waiter should quit. They were cursing a lot at him and that's verbal abuse. Just because you say it in a different language, doesn't mean hurtful words are okay.

Had a bad experience with this place but decided to give it another try which ended up being a terrible experience. I am not sure how this restaurant is still open. I would give this place zero stars if yelp would allow. Ok customer service but horrible food. I ordered a 6 piece sushi dinner. For credibility, I lived in Japan for the last four years so I know my sushi. To start the Miso soup was full of salt and seemed like it was pre-made, frozen then thawed in a crackpot to be served. The sushi was revolting, I only ate half before paying the check and walking out. I could tell just from the smell of the fish that it was not even close to being fresh. I will not be returning. Update-2 HOURS LATER, pretty sick

I've always liked Sumo Sushi. I have never had a bad meal there. So here is a note for anyone that lives in the area: there are more out of town reviewers who post low reviews of "popular" areas of Rhode Island like Newport. Pay attention to the locals. You will probably get reviews that are based on more than one or two visits and are not from annoyed tourists who expect their regional restaurants.) Our order: 2 cups Green Tea (they were large, I am not a fan of green tea {I find it has a noxious taste,} but this tea was delicate and the typical musty taste I avoid wasn't prominent,) 1 Japanese Orange Soda with mandarin orange pulp (was mild and subtle, very nice, try it. The pulp made the drink look like a glass art piece.) 5 Steamed Pork Gyoza (had thin wrappers and were mild but tasty, not my style {I like thick Chinese dumplings,} but good if you like gyoza, I didn't care for the salty sesame sauce that was served on the side so I only used it twice,) Sumo Sushi Sunomono (you have to try this, on the menu it's described as a "fried yellowtail and salmon roll in vinegar sauce" which does it no justice. Panko lightly clung to the rice outside of these rolls and the vinegar sauce is hard to describe but delicious, not too tart or tangy. The rolls were served with black tobiko on top of them and on a bed of marinated seaweed that we both liked,) Bulgogi (I liked it but wasn't expecting it to be almost devoid of sauce. The beef which wasn't the best cut was sliced relatively thin and was definitely marinated in the Barbecue sauce. It had carrots, green onions and mushrooms in it but it was mostly the beef. It was delicious and C liked it enough to share a bit with me,) Spicy Tekka Inside Out Roll - 6 pieces (This was a small but delicious roll with a very sweet/tart sauce on it that C enjoyed immensely. The sauce struck a wonderful contrast with the Gari {pickled ginger}, I recommend this,) Unagi Inside Out Roll - 6 pieces (Put Unagi in anything and I'll eat it. These were also small rolls but delicious.) came to about $50 One of the pleasures of eating sushi in a Japanese Restaurant (and this is mainly one even though a few Korean dishes are also served here,) is the presentation. The chef is careful with his food here and you can see him behind the sushi bar. He called out to C to tell him that his soda was delicious after C was told that the Plum soda wasn't available. We came at lunch time on a Sunday afternoon also so it was only us in the small dining room, (which I LOVED!) We sat at a table for two looking out over Thames Street and enjoyed our food in an unhurried way. Our server was a young man who seemed to need help identifying the food we ordered so maybe he was new. That's not unusual since the college kids have returned and many of the summer help has either gone back to school or returned to the countries they came from. I didn't find it to be a problem. I only wished I'd asked if they had any black tea instead of assuming that asking for the house tea would be black. My mistake, no biggie. Newport was packed with the Boat Show attendees. I was surprised that no one came in to Sumo Sushi. It's a small restaurant in a building that has other businesses in it that also look out towards Thames Street. It's BYOB but I never take advantage of that in any restaurant. The chef was friendly and bid us good day as we left. And we left not a bite of food on any of our plates. Sumo Sushi's quality has not gone down in the time it's been there (1998) and it's clean always. This is not the first time I've been here but like a true Rhode Islander I don't like to cross the bridge often nor come into Newport when it's seething with tourists. I am glad this place is here. Take a chance on it I don't think you'll be disappointed.

After eating sushi at multiple places on the island, and being highly disappointed with most, I went in with pretty low expectations. To my surprise, it was absolutely wonderful! We went at an odd hour, so the place was pretty much empty. We started the meal off with some vegetable tempura. It's probably one of the best ways to get your veggies in for the day ;). Like most places, the vegetable tempura contains zucchini, carrots, and an onion ring. We then ordered 3 giant rolls, which comes with 11 pieces each. They were all absolutely amazing and beautifully made. The chef/owner came over and talked story with us. You can tell he is very proud of every product he puts out on the table. Though he wasn't the one that originally waited on us, he checked in often and made sure we had everything we need and happy with our decisions. When we were finished, we still had plenty left over. I had packaged the rest of the rolls and chef insisted that he organized it better to make it look pretty haha. He did exactly that. He made leftovers pretty. Great experience, great grindz, and all at a great price. Appetizer and 3 giant rolls came to just under $45.

Probably my least favorite sushi place to date. We have only been in about 200 of them. We were hungry and ate anyway. The sushi isn't terrible but about like the sushi you might buy at a super market or the airport in say...Fargo, ND. OK if that is what you expect. If you want something good, there must be someplace else in Newport. At least I hope so.

Sumo Sushi is an amazing place to go!! The Caterpillar roll was to die for. You can't go wrong with the Spider roll either. My friends and I shared the fried ice cream (really good) and the Ginger ice cream (the perfect spice). Nothing beat the amazing customer service and plum tea!

As an underrated sushi bar, it was a surprisingly good experience while I was staying in the town of Newport. The sushi is refreshing and the envuronment is peaceful and quiet, which is something I really like. A feature that is unique to this restaurant is that it has a BYOB feature which they charge you a flat fee I believe should you choose to use this option. In addition, the owner I believe is of korean descent so he incorporated a portion of korean cuisine with the menu. I would come eat here again!

This place was one of the most vile dining experiences I have ever had. It makes me want to be sick even thinking about it and I feel like a sucker for paying for their crappy food. The miso was inedible salty crap. The waiter seemed out of it and confused and brought out our beverages last. The tempura was disgusting and greasy. I couldn't shake the feeling I was ingesting gross bacteria. I barely touched any of my avocado roll (hard to mess up) but still tasteless. My boyfriend's mixed vegetable roll was no better and was sliced unevenly and inexpertly. The whole experience was sloppy, gross and expensive- not to mention The WORST sushi I've encountered. Avoid at all costs and don't let this Dump keep ripping people off just because of the advantage of location.

My best friend and I went to Sumo for a nice night out on our vacation in Newport and I have to say it was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had. First of all, we were the first--and only--people in the restaurant (we arrived around 5pm on a Wednesday). So you'd expect great service from the numerous chefs and waiters lounging around the dining room, right? Wrong. They ignored us for the most part, only coming over to bring us our food. They seemed far more fascinated by the TV sitting over the sushi bar. The food was just NOT up to par, the nori was chewy, and our maki rolls were sloppily made. The quality of the fish was also less than expected. I've been to my fair share of sushi bars and restaurants, and when I see rolls priced the way they're priced at Sumo, I expect great quality. However, I felt like I was eating mall food court sushi. Our Newport Roll looked nothing like the one in the picture here on Yelp. To top it all off, we ordered green tea ice cream (which cost roughly $4). It was simply a tiny scoop (ONE!) that was placed on a plate with a cherry on top. It was quite clear that this ice cream was pre-scooped onto the bowl hours, probably DAYS ago, because it was badly freezer-burnt and looked melted. We were only able to have 2-3 bites each before it was all gone--and trust me, freezer burnt green tea ice cream isn't tasty. We were the only people there throughout our entire meal; they certainly had time to scoop ONE scoop of fresh ice cream for us. Totally dissatisfied. I honestly feel bad for whoever gave Sumo Sushi good reviews--either these people haven't tasted decent sushi before, or they're good friends of the restaurant owners and want to put in a good word. You'd be better off at a fast food joint.

Worst sushi in the world, period!!! Waiter was totally incompetent. Owner/ sushi chef continually yelling at waiter. Made for the worst dining experience i've ever had. Also, tempura shrimp tasted old, overcooked. Supermarket sushi is gourmet to this crap!!!
